Timeout Wellness Centre is a dream come true for Karen EASE your stresses and anxieties through a wide range of activities and complementary therapies now available in Lincoln thanks to a city businesswoman.

Karen Cook has long been a passionate advocate of using holistic therapies to ease mental health issues.

That is why she has been operating a Timeout wellness programme in a variety of formats for more than 12 years.

Now her dream of her beliefs becoming mainstream has been realised and the therapies and treatments at the Timeout Wellness Centre on Lincoln’s Steep Hill are available to more people than ever before.

“It has been my passion and something I’ve really believed in for a long time,” said Karen.

“We have been working on Timeout in the community, here in Lincoln and in various guises since 2009, but this is the first time I’ve felt that it’s got legs – it’s the first time I feel it will be what I’ve always wanted it to be.”

Mental health awareness has been rising recently, which is why Karen has been able to secure funding from the National Lottery for projects over the years, but her ambition has been for all types of complementary therapies - from massage, meditation and reflexology to art and music sessions – to be recognised as beneficial to mental health.

“The pandemic has changed all our lives in different ways and has made us more aware of the importance of self care and how creativity can have a really positive impact.”

Karen is also the owner of Le Sanctuaire Spa retreat and the premises are now dedicated to Timeout clients every Monday for a range of clinical and complementary therapies including acupuncture, therapeutic massages, reflexology, reiki healing and ear candling.

These services will be provided by experienced practitioner Jackie Betts at subsidised rates thanks to funding from the BIG Lottery and all are accessible by self-referral.

“Timeout is a social enterprise, so anything we make will go straight back into increasing what we offer people,” said Karen.

The centre’s Creative Services are designed to let people express their creativity and positive thoughts and users can work with other participants if they want to.

There are Therapeutic Art Sessions which will look at the colours that engender happiness and positivity as well exploring design, painting and drawing.

Karen has joined forces with The Pot Shop a couple of buildings up Steep Hill so pottery sessions can be held on Le Sanctuaire’s covered terrace overlooking the city and led by Victoria MacDonald.

There will also be Creative Writing Sessions and Music Therapy with the latter being led by Jez O’Kane, who has a wealth of experience helping young people with their mental health.

“We’ve got a really great team together and a good core to start giving people the benefits of Timeout Wellness Centre. They just need to make an appointment to find out how we can help.”

Editor’s Comments

We’re taking a break - it’s not you, it’s us MY alternative headline to this column was going to be Pull Up To The Bumper Baby, but the Business Spouse wasn’t keen on the B-word when describing this edition.

Nor was she very impressed with my suggestions of mega, humongous or ginormous, but there’s no getting away from the fact that our summer issue is a whopper.

Pre-pandemic we would have been producing another monster around this time - the Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide.

Like many summer staples - the Lincolnshire Show, Steampunk, 1940s weekend - it’s going to be at least 2022 before we see another HL full edition.

As Lincoln BIG chief executive Sarah Loftus said: “We want to come back bigger and better than ever in 2022.”

Uncertainty is still affecting people’s confidence, but like BIG and Visit Lincoln we’re far from giving up on Summer 2021.

That’s why this edition includes a mini Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide.

Despite the virus-risky crowd-pulling events being off the agenda there is still plenty to do and enjoy in and around the city this summer.

And let’s face it we always have aces up our sleeve in our fabulous heritage.

With much appreciated support from VL we have been able to bring events and activities together to show that Lincoln is still a great place to live, work, study and visit.

THERE are a couple of other reasons we’ve pulled out all the stops with this edition - the first is we just had so much to pack in, including pieces from our new intern Rebecca Hardy who recently became an official part of the team - thanks to the University of Lincoln.

Rebecca will be helping us with our new environmental focus,which we are also inviting readers to be part of by completing a Climate Change in Lincoln survey - see page 51.

The other reason is actually an ulterior motive we’re planning to take a break over the summer and we wanted to leave you with an amazing magazine with a fantastic shelf life so you don’t forget us - as if!

We won’t be taking the summer off - far from it, but we will be making a few changes to the Indie to refresh the magazine and bring you some new services.

She is 21 in 2021 and has developed organically over those years to meet the needs of the community we serve.

Like many businesses in lockdown we’ve had time to look at what we do and how we do it.

Organic development doesn’t really cut it any more in our rapidly changing world, so we’ve got a plan and through grant aid we’ve received - mainly from City of Lincoln Council we’ll be able to put that plan into action over the next few months.

We’ll be staying in touch in person and through social media, but in September this voice of the community will be louder than ever.

City cycling boost Grand Prix is back

CYCLING returns to Lincoln this autumn with more pedal power for the city than ever.

British Cycling has confirmed the 2021 HSBC UK | National Road Championships will be held in the city and for the first time in the event’s history the national champions’ jerseys will be presented for the road race, time trial and circuit in the same week.

Taking place from October 14-17, 2021 the event will begin with the time trials on Thursday, followed by the circuit races on Friday and the road races on Sunday.

The Lincoln Grand Prix was initially planned to be the opening round of this year’s HSBC UK | National Road Series, however due to Covid-19 restrictions the event was postponed.

Following British Cycling’s decision to postpone the competition the organisation has worked with Lincoln Grand Prix organiser Dan Ellmore to bring the national championships back to the city for the first time since 2015.

“We are incredibly pleased to bring the National Road Race Championships back to Lincoln on the historic Michaelgate cobbles,” said Dan. “The event brought over £1m in economic benefit to Lincoln when held in 2015 without the inclusion of the circuit championships so we hope to not only bring some fantastic racing to Lincoln in October but also a much welcome boost to the local economy” Following its inception in 1956, the Lincoln Grand Prix and its iconic Michaelgate climb have brought a host of the world’s best teams and riders to the city, with past winners of the race including Malcolm Elliott, Keith Reynolds, Russell Downing and Lizzie Deignan.

British Cycling CEO, Brian Facer, added: “Lincoln is one of the true spiritual homes of British cycling and we are thrilled to be returning to the city for what promises to be a momentous four days of racing. Bringing the three championship races together in the space of a week will be a unique and exciting challenge for riders, and a proud new chapter in the race’s storied history.

“The pandemic has presented enormous challenges for road racing, and I want to pay tribute to organiser Dan Ellmore, City of Lincoln Council and our team at British Cycling who have all worked around the clock to bring the event together at short notice.”

Cllr Bob Bushell, Portfolio Holder for Remarkable Place at the city council, said: “As a Council we are proud to be supporting this event and happy to see the return of the National Championships to the city.

“Lincoln prides itself in being a destination for cycling enthusiasts and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to the city for this event in October.”

Scammers exploit pandemic crisis CON artists are exploiting people under pressure due to the pandemic, evidence gathered by Citizens Advice has revealed.

As the charity gears up for its annual Scam Awareness Fortnight (June 14-27), it believes it is more important than ever to protect people from fraud and bogus schemes.

“At a time when people have been living in isolation and therefore may not have their normal support networks around them, have maybe lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet, its very easy to be drawn into potential scams that may be making promises

of cash prizes, luxury holidays or simply telling you there has been an issue with your bank account,” said Daisy Hammond, Finance and Administration Manager with Citizens Advice Lincoln & District.

There are some simple steps people can take to protect themselves: ● Don’t be rushed into making any decisions. Take your time; ● Never give money or personal details, like passwords or bank; details, to anyone you don’t know. If someone presses for these, it’s most likely a scam; ● Before you buy anything, check the company or website, read reviews, search for details on Companies House and look at their terms and conditions; ● Pay by debit or credit card. This gives you extra protection; ● Be suspicious - scammers appear like a trusted business or government official, have a professional website and say all the right things. Take time to work out if this is a real organisation. Ask for ID or contact the organisation on a number you know and trust; ● Make sure your antivirus software is up to date; ● Keep your online accounts secure. Use a strong password for email accounts; ● If you’re not sure get advice from a trusted source.

Daisy added: “Scammers are using this opportunity to take advantage of people’s increased vulnerability. It really is vital that everyone is aware of these scams and what to do in the event that you find yourself victim to them. If you require support please do get in touch with our Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808223 1133 and please do report all scams to Action Fraud so we can stop these scammers, together."

For a Good Cause

Thea puts in the miles for Macmillan THEA Jones spent her seventh birthday fundraising for Macmillan to thank the nurses caring for her marathon-running father after he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer.

The Lincoln schoolgirl decided to run a mile every day in the 20 days leading up to her birthday and has already raised more than £550 for Macmillan.

Her dad, Mike Jones, 40, was training for an ultra marathon when he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in October 2020 after a lump the size of a golf ball appeared on his neck. Surgeons removed a significant tumour from his throat before he underwent six weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

From the moment he was diagnosed Mike was supported by two Macmillan nurses, Katie and Wendy, at Lincoln County Hospital.

This support inspired Thea to fundraise for the charity.

Mike said: “Katie was in the room with me when I got my diagnosis. She was really good as I had so many questions. The doctor went about it in a very matter of fact way. I appreciated that she didn’t sugar coat anything but Katie stepped in and gave us the news in a different, softer way, contextualising what the doctor had said. She was very caring. She was there for me and the whole family.”

Mike struggled with the change in lifestyle, having previously been very active, running marathons and travelling the world as a military photographer. So when his daughter Thea decided she wanted to take up the mantle and set herself a running challenge for Macmillan it meant the world to him.

He said: “We are a running family. We used to go out as a family and do a park run together every weekend so Thea is a good little runner. I wasn’t sure at first if she’d stick with it but she absolutely smashed it. I’m so proud of her.”

Thea said: “My daddy had cancer and Macmillan was helping him so I decided to run for Macmillan. I wanted to have a challenge!”

Throughout his treatment Thea and her eight-year-old sister Erin have kept his spirits up by leaving him ‘I love you daddy’ notes “After I’d had my diagnosis, my wife Becky and I sat down with them and explained it in a matter of fact way. We were honest with them as we wanted them to feel free to ask questions. We gave them each a notebook to take to bed and encouraged them to write down anything that was on their mind. Some of the letters they left us were heart-breaking and others made us laugh so much.

They were never scared of the word cancer.”

While his daughters and wife Becky helped him to stay strong at home, Macmillan volunteer Andy was his rock during

chemotherapy sessions at the hospital. “He would come round and chat to us while we were having chemotherapy. He told me about his own cancer experience. I used to dread going down to the chemotherapy suite, but it became quite cathartic in the end. He had a really big impact on me.”

LIVES to the rescue at power station

A LIFESAVING charity has received a £1,200 donation from Cottam Power Station after it responded to a work incident.

LIVES’ Community Emergency Medicine Service (CEMS) went to Cottam after a 999 call.

The money will be used to fund sector-leading new defibrillators, that will be carried by the army of LIVES Emergency Responders. These can ensure that a patient in cardiac arrest has a greatly improved chance of survival.

The charity needs £1.4 million every year for its lifesaving work explained Rachel Hay, Community Fundraising Manager : “This support means we can continue to be there when the next 999 call is made and help someone else having their worst day.”

News from Lincoln UTC

Female students engineer their own successes LINCOLN UTC is celebrating International Women in Engineering Day on June 23 by highlighting the success of female students.

Data from the Women’s Engineering Society highlights that only 12.37% of engineers in the UK are women, and just 25.4% of girls aged 16-18 would consider a career in engineering compared to 51.9% of boys. Despite this, female UTC graduates have bucked the trend with their success in securing prestigious engineering apprenticeships and higher education courses over the past few years.

Year 13 students Georgina Smith (above right) and Eloise Winterflood (bottom left) have both recently completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering at the UTC. During her final year Georgina undertook an industrial placement with local component manufacturer and laser processing specialist Micrometric.

Georgina said: “Considering the challenging circumstances of the past year I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to gain industry experience. My placement allowed me to build a long-term relationship with Micrometric, gain an in-depth understanding of the company, and evidence the practical application of my engineering skills.

“In September I will start a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lincoln, and Micrometric have offered me a part-time job alongside my degree.”

Eloise was recently offered full sponsorship from Clyde Marine Training to complete an Engineering Officer Cadetship within the Merchant Navy.

Eloise said: “After studying engineering for four years at Lincoln UTC I am thrilled to have secured the next step of my career in industry. During my training I will spend time on shore and at sea, travelling and working on a multitude of ships with an established Merchant Navy company.

“I am proud to be challenging the traditional narrative with my career path in engineering and I hope that in future more girls will do the same.”

UTC student Shannon Barnes completed her studies in 2019 and secured a job with the Lincolnshire based engineering company Wefco as a Project Engineer. She recently achieved her Level 4 HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

Shannon said: “At the UTC I had the opportunity to complete work experience every year. In comparison to my peers at ‘ordinary’ schools I spent double the hours in the real world, developing vital skills and exploring potential career paths. One of my placements was at Wefco, and I secured my apprenticeship as a direct consequence.”

UTC Principal John Morrison said: “By reflecting on the incredible achievements of our female students we hope to inspire the next generation of girls to consider a career in engineering.

“Our curriculum provides a platform for students to progress into any sector within the industry.

We look forward to accepting our largest intake of girls yet in September 2021.”

Volunteer with Lincoln Samaritans SUICIDE prevention charity The Samaritans is looking for support volunteers at its Lincoln branch.

Every day, Samaritans volunteers respond to around 10,000 calls for help, but not everyone working with the charity gives emotional support to callers.

There are many other ways people can help according to recruitment lead Terry.

“As with most charities, this past year has been tough on our branch - we've been unable to fundraise or recruit as usual. The inability to recruit has had a major effect on us, each year we have a turn-over of around 20 volunteers, our leaving rate has remained the same but obviously we've been unable to replenish leaving us in a depleted state,” said Terry.

“We're able to recruit again now, and luckily we have a huge number of potential listeners on our waiting list but we're in desperate need of support staff. I'm sure there are people out there who would like to offer their time to our cause but do not feel the role of a listener is for them. For those people we have a wealth of opportunities, such as administration, fundraisers, property maintenance.”

In the nine months since the restrictions began (23 March – 20 December 2020), nationally they provided emotional support over 1,700,000 times to people struggling to cope, via phone and email.

One in five of the calls were from people who were specifically concerned about coronavirus – although, our volunteers suggest that coronavirus has affected every one of our callers in some way, even if it isn’t their main concern. For callers concerned about coronavirus, worries about isolation, mental ill-health and family have been the most common concerns.

Since the pandemic began, people’s concerns about coronavirus have been mostly related to the knock-on effects of the social distancing restrictions, including economic and mental health worries.

The charity has also seen a change in the way people use its services during this time - in the nine months since social distancing restrictions began, it answered nearly 400,000 emails – a 32% increase compared to the same period last year.

FIRST it was hit by floods in November 2019 and up until recently the pandemic lockdowns prevented Bransby Horses opening to the public - now the charity is looking forward to a summer of fun and fundraising.

The Independent got the low-down on the latest news from the horse’s mouth – actually the donkeys’ mouths - as Nipper (top) and Marlene have been keeping their large fluffy ears to the ground.

They will be giving readers regular updates about life at the facility just north of Lincoln as well as sharing insights about the residents.

For example did you know that donkeys are not the hardy equines many people think?

Unlike horses, their coats are not waterproof and wet ground makes them susceptible to a condition known as seedy toe, which can lead to infections. They also hide their pain well, so by the time they are showing distress it could be too late to effectively treat their ailment Bransby makes daily health checks.

Our well-cared for donkey duo are among over 300 equines, 60 staff and scores of volunteers who welcomed visitors back to Bransby when Coronavirus restrictions eased on April 12.

The site and award-winning visitor centre may have been closed to the public but the work of looking after the horses, donkeys and mules continued at Bransby as well as at the Barlings site where more horses and ponies are homed.

Jo Snell, the charity’s CEO, said: “I would like to take a moment to thank everyone in the Bransby family for their support, adaptability and resilience over the last 12 months. Our supporters and teams have been fantastic and we simply couldn’t have continued with our vital rescue and welfare work during the pandemic without them.”

The team has also implemented safe and effective ways to resume onsite services and activities, certified ‘We’re Good to Go’ by Visit Britain, which include meeting four-legged friends along miles of picturesque walkways and a new play park catering for children of all ages, with a dedicated toddler area, new slides, swings and climbing frames.

A Click and Collect service will be offered at the café and gift shop so food can be pre-ordered and a bargain or two bagged - all helping to ensure the charity’s rescue and welfare work continues.

Nipper and Marlene believe Bransby is the perfect place to bring the family, take your daily exercise or grab a coffee with friends.

News from Polarn O Pyret

PO.P expands after lockdown success POPULAR children’s clothing brand Polarn O Pyret is proof that it has not all been doom and gloom for business during the pandemic restrictions.

Originally founded in 1976 in Sweden the eco-friendly, sustainable label has its UK and Ireland headquarters in Lincoln and has doubled the size of its marketing team over the last year.

In the last month the operation based at The Lawn has added two new hires and is currently in the process of recruiting another Digital Marketing Executive.

It’s been a busy and successful year for Polarn O. Pyret UK or PO.P (the name means Buddy and the Little One in Swedish) beating its sales target by 60% despite Covid-19 lockdowns closing non-essential retailers.

Mats Nilsson and his wife Jo (pictured top left) have been running the PO.P franchise in England and Ireland since 2006 - all because of a top that Mats’ mother gave their newborn son.

“I kept choosing that same top, again and again. The stripes stayed bright wash after wash and it remained so smart compared to his other clothing. What’s more, I loved the way it fitted properly, however I held him. The quality of the garment was really very special. ” explained Jo. “We bought PO.P clothes for our kids whenever we visited Sweden. One day, I was sitting at the playground thinking about why I liked them so much. I looked at my kids as they played and saw how their clothes fitted them better and gave them such great freedom of movement. It had something to do with the cut, especially the shoulders and sleeves. “ The colours were brighter and the prints more appealing.

And no matter how often I washed them, they kept their shape and didn’t fade. I spoke with Mats, who had grown up wearing the clothes. We were confident that British parents would love the quality too.”

Mats left his management consultant career to ‘bring this Swedish national treasure to the UK’ and the couple have quietly enjoyed successfully operating flagship stores dedicated solely to the brand, as well as concessions in leading department stores.

The pandemic created the opportunity to further grow online sales via their own well-established websites, as well as with the online offerings with the UK’s largest clothing retailer, Next, and family favourite John Lewis.

“When the pandemic hit, there was so much uncertainty for the retail sector, said Mats.

“However, the increased strength of our marketing team allowed us to create a clear digital strategy and we grew more successfully than we planned in such turbulent times, meaning the team now needs to expand even further. Of course, a lot of our success is down to the quality and popularity of the Polarn O. Pyret brand.”

Head of Marketing Luisa Cacioppo-Smallwood, added: “Like so many other businesses, we have been presented with some really tough challenges in the last year, but our growth in online sales has been hugely exciting. There is a common myth that there is the concept of common law husband and wife when an unmarried couple live together for a period of time. There is no such concept of this in law, and therefore the rights a married couple are entitled to are not the same as cohabiting rights.

People who live together are known as cohabitees. Under the current law cohabiting rights are limited regardless of how long people have lived together.

If you are cohabiting and your relationship ends or one of you dies, you will find there are very different laws in relation to property, pensions and inheritance for married couples/civil partners and those who are not.

If you are a cohabitee and you have children, if you decide to separate or one of you dies, legal provisions are put in place for children under the age of 18 or dependents but, as a parent, you have no legal protection. This means that one parent could find themselves with little or no financial provision.

How can I claim cohabiting rights?

Cohabitation Agreements can be put together, prior to moving in with someone or whilst living with someone. They provide both parties cohabiting rights and ensure that in the event of a relationship breakdown both parties are protected.

A Cohabitation Agreement will cover issues such as: • What happens to any joint assets/property in the event of a relationship breakdown; • How will bills, mortgage, and debts be split and sorted in the event of a relationship breakdown.

What to do next about cohabiting rights?

For the time being, the government has not provided a statutory resolution to the problems resulting in the breakdown of unmarried couples.

A positive way forward, however, for anyone in an unmarried relationship or about to enter into one, would be to consider entering into a formal Cohabitation Agreement through solicitors.

This provides both parties with the financial security they can both rely on during their relationship and in the event of a breakdown.

Making a Will The law of intestacy covers what happens to an estate when someone dies without a Will – it applies very differently to married couples (or those in a civil partnership) to cohabiting couples’ rights - they have no rights.

If one person dies then the other partner is not entitled to anything as a result of being in a relationship and cohabiting. In marriage a range of legal entitlements arise for one partner if the other dies.

Making a will is an imporant step in un unmarried couple planning their financial future together.

New Waddington fire engine marks upgrade completion THE last of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s new fire appliances has been delivered to its new home – Waddington fire station.

A total of 33 new Scania appliances have been delivered to fire stations across the county over 18 months, prompting enquiries from other fire services in the UK interested in the specification and build of the Lincolnshire bespoke appliances.

The Waddington crew’s (pictured blow) new vehicle and equipment marked the end of the £8m roll out in the county.

Cllr Lindsey Cawrey, Executive Councillor for Emergency Services at the county council attended the handover with Chief Fire Officer Mark Baxter (pictured above).

“This is a big investment by the county council as the fire service is a priority for us. This new equipment not only keeps our communities safer, but also keeps our firefighters safer. I’m delighted that our fire crews in Lincolnshire will be some of the best equipped in the UK. This may be the last appliance to be delivered, but our commitment to investing in our fire service continues.”

The appliances feature the latest equipment for firefighting, rescues and car extrication, with many having state-of-the-art Coldcut Cobra units. These ultra-high-pressure cutting extinguishers allow fires to be tackled from the outside of buildings.

CFO Baxter added: “This equipment enables us to be more effective in fighting fires, with the situation more quickly controlled. That leads to a drastic reduction in water damage to homes. This project started with us asking firefighters what features they wanted to see in new appliances to do their jobs effectively, and this was at the forefront of the whole design and build. Firefighters across the county give so much to their jobs and their communities, it’s only right we keep them as wellprotected as possible.”

City-wide art project gives young a voice THE words of children and young people frustrated by being locked down, isolated and unheard, will be unleashed across the city from July 10 to 4 September 4 This summer, Zest Theatre will bring 100 vibrant artworks on flags, posters, banners, and billboards all over the city.

The city-wide installation, Refresh Lincoln, is set to reclaim the city centre for young people, placing their voices at the heart of Lincoln’s re-opening and recovery following a year of being in and out of lockdown.

“In response to changing restrictions and our young people feeling disconnected and left behind, Zest is investing back into its home city of Lincoln to provide hope and advice for the future – direct from its young people through colourful artworks around the city,” said producer Catherine Fowles.

Throughout March, Zest Theatre supported by Lincoln BIG and other agencies, led 35 free remote workshops with 800 young people aged 10 – 19 in schools across Lincoln. Zest created a space for young people to reflect on the last year and they had so much to say, that more than 600 quotes were collected about any and everything – from daily life to the universe.

“Refresh Lincoln will share these quotes – the questions, advice, and hopes of Lincoln’s children and young people, amplifying the voice of a generation and bringing colour and conversation to the place they call home,” added Catherine.

“Refresh Lincoln has been an incredible opportunity to push our creative boundaries, bring Zest’s work back home to Lincoln, and engage young people in the delivery of new work – not just as participants, but as budding professionals – allowing them to grow in their individual practice and explore the opportunities they might create for Lincoln in future. Their input and wisdom is clear, and we can’t wait to share it with the city this summer.”

Artistic Director Toby Ealden explained the ethos of the project: “The last 12 months have taken their toll on Young People. They are facing a mental health crisis and we knew that Zest needed to respond. The closure of Lincoln Drill Hall left a huge dent in our city’s cultural provision, and we feel the responsibility to provide some solutions by investing into our local community and enriching the lives of children and young people across the city in this time of crisis. We believe Refresh Lincoln will be just what we all need at the end of a long year of restrictions and uncertainty – creating a city centre that is full of colour and hope.”

Fire Safety in the Home Week June 14-20

Make sure your smoke alarms are working ALARMS save lives and in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide (CO) incident they can provide precious time to escape.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is highlighting the importance of installing alarms as part of Home Safety Week, June 14-20.

The week encourages people to assess the needs of their homes and ensure they have adequate alarms for their needs. For those most vulnerable groups Fire and Rescue Services can assist with specific advice for the individual and, if required, fit smoke detection and some fire and rescue services may be able to install CO detection too.

In 18% of home fires in the UK smoke alarms fail to activate. The most common reason (50%) was because the fire was outside the alarm's range.

Householders should install alarms to ensure the whole home is covered. Smoke alarms should be installed in the rooms used most as this is where a fire is most likely to start.

Fitting a smoke alarm on every floor of a home should be recognised as a minimum standard (in a circulation space such as a hall or landing).

The council also recommends smoke alarms are fitted in every room in the house which is regularly inhabited (i.e. bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms) based upon the fire risk to the occupants.

Sealed battery compartment alarms are the fire service’s preferred option to prevent tampering or removal of the battery and the NFCC recommend an optical multi sensor smoke alarm with a ten year life span. Another good precaution is to fit heat detectors in the kitchen.

Where possible, these alarms should be inter-linked so that all will

actuate within the property irrespective of the fire location.

All smoke alarms (including hard wired) should be replaced after ten years, or by the ‘replace by’ date indicated on the base or earlier if found to be defective.

CO is a highly poisonous gas, which you cannot see, taste or smell and fire chiefs recommend that any room with a fuel burning appliance such as an open fire, wood burning stove or gas appliance such as a boiler or cooker should also have a working CO alarm fitted.

The council is campaigning for consistent legislation for the fitting of detection in the UK. All homes in the UK should be equally protected by adeqaute detection regardless of tenure or location in the UK. James Bywater, NFCC Lead for Home Detection said: " NFCC want people to think about the risks in their homes and ensure they take action to prevent incidents and ensure they have the right detection in the right places to be alert if an incident happens.

“This might mean installing more smoke alarms in your home, particularly in the rooms used most, and carbon monoxide alarms in all rooms with a fuel burning appliance.

Home detection technology has advanced and products with sealed batteries or interlinked systems are available and as part of your home safety plan might give you and your family precious time to escape."

White goods register REGISTERING white goods appliances is a great way to protect your home, according to Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue.

In the event that the manufacturer identifies an issue that needs repairing or a product recall, owners will be contacted as quickly as possible. In many cases the product can be repaired in your home.

It can be difficult to trace customers if they have not registered their appliances - it can be done easily online at www.registermyappliance.org.uk.

All you need is the brand, model, serial number and rough purchase date.

Serial numbers can be found on the safety plate which usually found inside the door, for dishwashers, tumble dryers and washing machines; inside the main compartment for fridges and on the underside or back of smaller items.

The appliances do not have to be brand new as homeowners can register appliances up to 12 years old.

After working in the fashion industry for over two decades as a designer and a stylist Santa decided to expand into the world of interiors a few years ago, Now she is working her magic in uphill Lincoln helping local businesses with their window displays and shop floor interiors and layouts.

Santa’s knowledge, expertise and creativity is now in demand as local businesses plan strong recovery from the pandemic restrictions.

When Santa creates a new window display; helps redesign a shop floor or organises styling for live shoots, the end result must translate into attracting more clientele as well as looking beautiful and inviting.

“I make myself familiar with the business, its owner and its background before I start work. Then, when I walk into it, I’ll have a good idea what works and what doesn’t, what needs to be improved and what can simply be moved around for better effect. The aim is to deliver that ‘wow’ factor.”

Santa is still involved in the fashion industry, but loves being able to combine it with her interior projects.

“I absolutely love what I do and I’m very privileged and proud to be asked and to be able to work on projects around Lincoln. It’s my home at the end of the day, and if I can help local people and businesses and know that I have made a difference, that’s when I’m happiest too,” she said.

You might have seen Santa running around town with her tool box and a step ladder. She is a very hands on stylist.

“The job isn’t just about putting pretty stuff in place. There are many more steps before you get to the right end result.

Lots of planning, creating the scene, sourcing props and other items, plus many projects come with some painting to do, drilling, hammering, fixing loose fittings, designing the new or recycling the old.

“If it needs to be done, it will be done. I focus on every detail, no matter how small. I’m such a perfectionist.”

“I do take photos while working as it helps me to see before and after results but I rarely get round to putting things on social media afterwards, as I have already started another project.

“It’s ironic I know but I spend all day helping a business to promote itself to the public and then don’t do enough of that with my own business,” says Santa.

How has it been affected by Covid-19 restrictions Tourism was the first to be hit and the hardest to be hit by covid.

The pandemic has had a devastating impact on tourism globally and locally. The visitor economy is built around social experiences and the movement of people, so the restrictions hurt the tourism, hospitality and leisure businesses far greater than any other sector.

As a business, it affected all our planned consumer marketing for obvious reasons.

The pandemic also affected the way we offer business support. It used to be reserved for paying partners, but we took an early decision to make it freely available for everyone; so any business that needed help, advice, and peer support could join our community. Some days we had no idea what we could say to make the situation better, but we shared as much information as we could so business owners could make informed decisions. It felt like the right thing to do and now new businesses are joining as DMO partners, so it’s having a positive commercial impact too.

Lessons learned?

Over the last 12 months I have learnt not to be afraid to ask for help.

I’ve said ‘I’m phoning to ask your advice – have you got a moment to talk please’ more times this year than I can remember and truly incredible things have happened as a result.

I think Visit Lincoln is more connected now with city, county, regional, national and trade partners than we have ever been. We’ll be squeezing every drop out of these relationships to support recovery over the next few years.

Any goosebump moments (good and hair-raising)?

Oh yes, working in the tourism and hospitality sector during a global pandemic has given me many hair-raising moments. We dug deep as a team so we could support businesses while also chasing recovery opportunities and investment so the sector could be stronger coming out of covid than it was going into it.

A real goosebump moment was learning that our pitch into the Lincoln Town Deal to digitise the visitor economy and High Street had been welcomed by national Government.

On a personal level being asked to lead the team two weeks before covid hit, and then navigating the impact it had not only on the sector as a whole, but for Visit Lincoln as a business was a challenge; but it’s made me stronger, more pragmatic and forced me to expand my skill set in ways I would never have considered before.

How do you deal with negativity?

For me, understanding where the negativity comes from is a key factor in how I deal with it. If it’s constructive and I can learn from it that’s fine. I often openly ask for feedback (and expect to receive some kind of negativity) to make sure I’ve considered every angle.

What external factors would most help your organisation?

Tourism is worth £2.4billion to Greater Lincolnshire, it’s an economic powerhouse locally and nationally and we need Government to stand up and support its long-term recovery post covid.

How do you see your role in driving Lincoln forward?

We will be launching a Greater Lincolnshire Destination Management Organisation (DMO) called Destination Lincolnshire in a phased approach over the next year.

Visit Lincoln DMO is 10 years old and we have seen a growing demand for our services.

We want to continue growing our business support and DMO community so that businesses have the means to recover and become more resilient.

Another ambition is to digitise the visitor economy and High Street, so experiences are more accessible and commercial post covid We have been invited to work with local authorities on the Town Deals across Lincolnshire, which could see millions of pounds invested in Lincoln, Boston, Skegness and Mablethorpe. The positive impact this will have on tourism will be significant, and it will complement the investment we have seen at Lincoln Castle, Lincoln Cathedral and the Cornhill Quarter to name a few.

We are also working on recovery consumer marketing plans and a bookable product which will put money straight into a business’ bank account. Although there will be a lot of pent-up demand, we need to be careful and responsible with how we market Lincolnshire post covid. We’re very lucky that our natural environment has a city, countryside and coastal offer, but we want to focus on attracting visitors who respect our county, want to stay a little longer and spend more money on top quality experiences.

SOCIALLY distanced fun in the sun has been at the heart of Lincoln BIG’s plans for summer in the city.

While it cannot promise the latter, the Business Improvement Group has been working to ensure there’s plenty for residents and visitors to do and see in Lincoln despite the absence of major events such as Steampunk, the Lincolnshire Show and the 1940s Weekend due to Covid-19.

BIG’s wardens have been ensuring the city is clean and is signed with safety advice and there will be free hanging baskets in existing brackets and on lamp posts with more street decorations to come.

“We’ll be coming back with the crowd-pulling events bigger and better than ever in 2022, but there’s still plenty to look forward to this summer,” said Chief Executive Sarah Loftus (see our listings pages).

Top of the attractions is the Lincoln Imp Trail, which will launch on July 3 with 31 hand-decorated life-size versions of Lincoln Cathedral’s grotesque carving dotted around the city.

Running until September 8 the trail will have Imp Hubs in the Waterside Shopping Centre and Visitor Information Centre in Castle Square.

Time for tea!

The Principal Tipple

SMOKED SWALEDALE PDO

THE Swaledale Cheese Company can trace its artisan cheesemaking back to the 11th century.

The Cistercian monks are believed to have created the original recipe using ewe’s milk and then passed on the cheese-making techniques to local farmers.

During the 20th century the art of cheesemaking declined in Swaledale and by 1980, there was only one farm producing cheese. When the Longstaff farm stopped producing cheese, Mrs Marjorie Longstaff passed on the original process to the founders of Swaledale Cheese Company. Head leads decades of change Keeper of the Garton Archive at Lincoln Christ’s Hospital Peter Harrod continues to explore its pictorial past.

THIS charming photograph is one of the earliest we have in the treasured collection in the archives at Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School.

It was taken towards the end of the 19th century, and shows the begowned Headmaster of Lincoln Grammar School, the Rev Canon William Weekes Fowler with the boarders at the school.

The photo was taken in the 1890s outside the School House on Upper Lindum Street, which had been the headmaster’s house since 1862, and would remain so until 1907 when the school moved to its new site on Wragby Road.

The boys’ uniform is worthy of note and in particular the Eton collars and the traditional school caps. The boy in the centre seems to be proudly showing off his watch chain, and I wonder what status that would have accorded him? Could he have been the Captain of the School House perhaps?

At that time the school was divided into the Lower School occupying the Greyfriars building which had been the school’s premises for some 300 years, and the Upper School which was housed in a new building opened for the grammar school in 1885 in close proximity to the School House on Upper Lindum Street.

It was not until 1901 that the two sections of the school were reunited largely because neither school was strong enough numerically or economically to survive alone. By the end of the 19th century, there were approximately 130 boys in the upper school, and 60 in the lower school.

Educated at Rugby School, Headmaster Fowler was a distinguished scholar, having gained his BA (Oxon) in 1873 and his MA in 1875, and his first teaching appointment was at Repton School in 1873.

He became a deacon in 1874, and a priest in 1875 and was 42

appointed to Lincoln Grammar School in 1880 where he remained until 1900 when he left to take up a living in Oxfordshire.

Perhaps unusually for the headmaster of a grammar school Canon Fowler developed an interest in coleoptera (beetles) during his time at Repton and became an eminent and well-respected entomologist.

The Wikipedia entry on Fowler reports that his expertise led to the publication of the first volume of The Coleoptera of the British Islands and to his appointment as Secretary of the Royal Entomological Society, a post which he held for 10 years before becoming its President in 1901. He also wrote several books and more than 150 articles for various entomological journals.

Headmaster Fowler, affectionately known by his pupils as ‘Daddy’, presided over many changes during his 20-year tenure. The December 1891 edition of The Lincolnian looked back over the previous 10 years since 1880, the year Fowler was appointed. It recalled that many old boys who had recently left would remember the rooms in the ‘Grey Friars’, and especially the old classrooms in the cloisters which, although very interesting from an archaeological point of view, were “miserably inadequate” for teaching purposes, being dark, draughty and badly ventilated. The number of boys, too, was very small, Fowler having been left only 33 boys by his predecessor.

Canon Fowler was at the helm during a period of upheaval in the long and complex history of Lincoln School following 300 years of relative stability at Greyfriars. He was instrumental in bringing the Lower (Middle) School and the Upper School together and paving the way for the move to the new Watkins building on Upper Lindum Street, now occupied by the Minster School.

Edible England theme perfect fit for Lincolnshire’s history THE Society for Lincolnshire History & Archaeology (SLHA) is planning two events to support the 2021 Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days in September.

The national theme this year is Edible England – very appropriate to the history of Lincolnshire. An on-line exhibition, Food and Farming in Lincolnshire, will run from September 10-24 using a selection of images from the past.

“Through a series of wonderful archive images from the John Wilson Collection, visitors to the on-line display will be able to discover the rich diversity of the story of food and farming in Lincolnshire,” said Society Secretary Kathy Holland.

“From traditional farming methods to the development of new machinery, Lincolnshire has made a huge contribution to the

production of foods of all kinds for Lincolnshire, the nation and beyond.

Harvest is an important event in the food calendar and many of its traditions still take place today. An online talk will be presented by Maureen Sutton called Bygone Harvests - Superstitions, Traditions and Rituals. Places for the talk on Wednesday, September 15 must be booked through Eventbrite, admission is free but donations are invited.

Where did Aaron live?

OVER the centuries many tales and legends have surrounded the life of Aaron of Lincoln, often called Aaron le Riche, or even Aaron the Great.

Whereas his business activities across the country, administered with the help of his sons and business partners, have been documented to a certain extent, his private life is largely unknown.

When Joseph Jacobs the Jewish historian looked into the origins of the Jewish community in medieval Lincoln in the 1890s, he visited the city to view the physical remains of that period, particularly the twelfth-century building near the top of Steep Hill, now called the Norman House. He was told of a ‘tradition’, understood to be less than 50 years old at the time, that it was Aaron’s house.

The history of numbers 46-47 Steep Hill has subsequently been investigated as part of The Survey of Lincoln’s wider research of houses on Steep Hill, the Strait and the top of the High Street. As Sir Francis Hill pointed out in Medieval Lincoln in 1948, there is no record of Aaron living there. In the period c.1227/28, much new work was undertaken on the Castle defences, and it could be reasonably assumed that Aaron’s house was then hindering the works and had to be demolished. A similar situation arose with buildings near the Castle gateway in 1809, when the Judges’ Lodgings were erected.

possibly with houses on it, extending in each direction from a point opposite the Castle gateway, near the current Judges’ Lodgings, as far as the Castle ditch, and south to the city wall.

This was a substantial property holding, worth 40s. or 60s. per annum. Aaron’s house, situated on this site and valued at 6s. per annum, must have been a substantial property, taking up three average-sized plots.

One puzzle is why Aaron should have given up his house? This might have been part of a business deal, or the fact that he was spending most of his time in a magnificent house in Lothbury, in the City of London, rented from the Earl of Gloucester.

On Aaron’s death Henry II, in urgent need of funds, confiscated the whole of his assets.

Another question that has arisen concerns Jewish settlement in uphill Lincoln generally. Were there any other Jewish-occupied houses in this part of the city? Although there was a relatively large Jewish community in the city in the mid-thirteenth century, there seems to have been a reluctance on their part to take houses in the Bail. One Jewish resident was Judas de Ballio, who held an unidentified property in the Bail area for many years, until he was hanged alongside 17 other members of the local Jewish community in the ‘Little St Hugh’ case of 1255. This was an expression of medieval antisemitism as they were convicted for their supposed involvement in the murder of nine-year-old Hugh.

In the case of Aaron, although it is now known, more or less, where he lived, just outside the eastern entrance to the Castle, the wrong attribution involving the Norman House continues to survive in some histories of the area.

Lives Less Ordinary

Joyce Leyshon

Joyce finds the life she loves and the love of her life Joyce Leyshon (left) will be a familiar face to many people having spent over six decades working behind and running bars. she’s had her share of headlines over the years not least for being Britiain’s oldest barmaid.

The 98-year-old great grandma only stopped working at The Crown on Lincoln’s Baggholme road aged 92 and loved every minute of pub life, but faced her share of hardship and heartache before finding happiness in hospitality.

MUM Nelly Robson was determined her eldest daughter was going to follow her into nursing, but Joyce had other ideas.

“I gave it a try, but it wasn’t for me. I went for another unform not the one she had in mind for me.”

Dad Leonard was in the army and Joyce had been born at Sobraon Barracks on Burton Road - the home of the Lincolnshire Regiment.

However, Joyce wanted to join the Wrens, because the Navy is Britain’s ‘Senior Service’ - the oldest of the Armed Forces having being founded by Henry VIII (if you ever wondered why those old cigarettes had a sailing ship emblem).

She was selected after training in 1941 and was sent to the Royal Naval Hospital Chatham at Gillingham, Kent, (now the Medway Maritime NHS Hospital) where she was the wardroom attendant for the Commanding Officer, Sir Randolph Stewart Gresham Nicholson.

“He thought I was too young to be in the Wrens and that I shouldn’t be so far away from home.”

Sir Randolph’s concerns meant Joyce spent less than a year a Chatham before she was posted to the HMS Royal Arthur, another hospital based at the Old Butlins holiday camp at Ingoldmells, near Skegness. Again she was a wardroom attendant this time for the base’s dentist Mr Dimmock.

Her former CO did not really keep Joyce out of harm’s way as in 1942 a lowflying German bomber killed four men and wrecked dozens of chalets.

The success of the D-Day landings in 1944 was celebrated by personnel at the base but it looked like cash-strapped Joyce was not going to be able to join in until

her boss intervened.

“He asked if I was going to celebrate and I told him that I wasn’t going anywhere because I didn’t have any money. He gave me £5, which was a huge amount in those days, so me and a friend went to The Ship Hotel in Skegness.”

Len Howell was also serving at HMS Royal Arthur and Joyce married the roving Londoner on February 24, 1945.

“We were married for a week before he went off to the Far East and I didn’t see him for two years. “ When Len returned in 1947 Joyce immediately fell pregnant with son Tony and the family tried to settle down to a normal life. Len worked for Lincolnshire Roadcar but Joyce knew the marriage was on shaky ground.

“I never knew where he was or who he was with and then he joined up again and went out to Australia. I didn’t see him again until Tony was 35.”

Joyce found work at Jacksons Laundry to support her son, but had a bad reaction to the chemicals used.

“I couldn’t work there anymore so I applied

to the Green Dragon for a job as a barmaid.

As soon as I was behind that bar I knew I could do this for rest of my life. I loved it. I loved the atmosphere and the socialising. It’s just what I was meant to do.”

She was head-hunted by the landlord of the Duke of Wellington on Broadgate, Tom Blanchard.

“He came to see me and asked if I would like to work for him and at that time the Duke of Wellington was the best pub in Lincoln, so I thought I would give it a go.”

With it’s own venue upstairs and proximity to the Drill Hall, which attracted national acts the ‘Wellie’ was a buzzing establishment.

“I remember Freddie and the Dreamers were playing at the Drill Hall and Freddie (Garrity) came in. I couldn’t get a taxi after my shift, so he gave me a lift home and was the perfect gentleman.”

Cpl Ken Leyshon was a regular at the Duke and had his eye on the bubbly barmaid.

“He said he wanted to take me for a meal, so I agreed to go. When he dropped me off he said he wouldn’t leave unless I agreed to marry him. I really didn’t want to get married again and I thought he was messing about, so I said yes just so he’d leave.

“He was serious and we were married six weeks later on December 23, 1966. He turned out to be the love of my life.”

The couple moved into married quarters and started a life together that took them all over the world, but never very far away from a bar for Joyce to take charge of.

Ken and Joyce Leyshon had a whirlwind romance.

Late March.

Weather very strange, freezing and sunny by turns. By the end of the month we have dug one bed. It is between four and five feet wide and nigh on 20 feet long and is ready for some good muck.

It is very, very breezy. We foolishly erect a poly tunnel and realise, possibly too late, that this is a ‘windy site’. Getting the cover on was testing and as the wind billowed the sides of the tunnel, we watched with increasing alarm and a sinister premonition of doom.

After a wild weekend we discover the wind has almost destroyed the poly tunnel. It has actually broken the frame on one corner. We have removed the cover and are despondently deciding what to do.

Early April Weather calmer. We pull ourselves together and retrieve two thirds of the poly tunnel, move the frame to a more sheltered site and erect. Getting a ten foot cover snugly over a six foot frame is interesting. This time we anchor the frame and the cover to the ground very ferociously.

I have collected many bags of horse manure, which cover about four square feet of ground.

This is to help my crop of potatoes. I put the first earlies in but no one else seems to be planting anything and I feel foolishly naive.

GARDEN DESIGN, LANDSCAPING & TREE CARE

Mid April.

Back at home in the greenhouse, tomatoes, cucamelon, sweet corn, leeks and kohl rabi are all sprouting wildly. I put in some climbing French beans, which do come up but get almost instantly eaten by a slug. Am reminded again of my inexperience with vegetables.

Late April Start digging out another bed at the allotment, this time for flowers. I am growing dahlias and other flowers for cutting.

Mapping out fight against food poverty

The Scheme, funded by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs ran from October 2020 to the end of March 2021 and overall, we were able to support 61 applications from organisations – mainly food banks - in the county across all districts, with the highest number of applications being from Lincoln City, East Lindsey and West Lindsey.

Nearly £250,000 was distributed across these projects.

Interestingly for us, an increasing range of groups saw the need to help with food poverty, extending the roles of foodbanks, community larders and affordable cafes.

As the pandemic progressed more churches in the county took on food bank functions as they could see a need among parishioners.

Schools too, adopted a ‘food help’ role,

recognising that if their children were short of food, invariably their parents would be too. Housing associations took on a similar role for their tenants.

The LFP has been able to develop an interactive map of all 69 of these groups operating as food banks within Greater Lincolnshire.

It is constantly being updated and identifies the nearest source of social food to you.

With the Emergency Support funding, we also were able to support over 300 individuals referred to us as having problems accessing food, again across all districts, and we were able to allocate over £105,000 of funds to these people.

Part of the work required the production of a ‘Social Food Infrastructure Plan’ for the county and this will be used to shape further provision for food poverty in Lincolnshire as well as the development of community growing projects, which will reconnect people with food.

It is good to be able to create a legacy framework as a result of this funding.

VEG-oUT helps families cook with confidence

INSPIRED by the community spirit during lockdown, Gemma Whitelock, owner of VEG-OUT Lincoln decided to support Lincoln Food Bank, writes rEBECCA HArdy.

Gemma began producing plant-based food boxes, which have since been rebranded as ‘Store Cupboard Recipe Boxes’ to help local families.

“As a business we wanted to do our bit. After raising money to donate allergy friendly plant-based meal options to the food bank, we became aware of there being a gap,” explained Gemma.

“Food bank parcels are fabulous and they really are an invaluable support for those who need them. With my background in education, it made the lightbulb moment happen… what if there was a hybrid recipe-food bank box?”

Gemma started to provide the ingredients to make nutritionally balanced meals, with simple instructions that were easy to follow “We wanted to allow families to see the value and versatility of the

ingredients such as kidney beans and chickpeas, that they would often not know what to do with and return to the food bank.”

VEG-OUT Lincoln will continue to focus on supporting the local community throughout 2021.

“We were aiming to provide kindness through food but also the support, guidance, kitchen confidence and the improved selfesteem and satisfaction that comes with creating something nutritious,” said Gemma.

“We have been fortunate enough to receive grant funding to allow us to continue the project further. Our partnership with Mint Lane Cafe has been invaluable to get us started and allowed families to have a central Lincoln collection point for the first few months of the project,” explained Gemma.

“We have plans already in place to support the work by Abbey Access Training by supplying the ‘Store Cupboard Recipe Boxes’ for their healthy eating course with local families throughout June.

We are also currently firming up plans with a couple of local primary schools to enable us to provide boxes for their most in need families throughout the final term of the academic year.”

News from the Veterinary Hospital

VH branches out to Skellingthorpe THE Veterinary Hospital opened its new practice this year in the old doctor’s surgery in Skellingthorpe.

The new site offers more vet and nurse consultations Monday to Friday, prescription collection and another fully equipped theatre for minor and routine surgery. The extra space also allowed the VH team to have and design a designated room for euthanasias - The Snug (pictured below).

As the hospital continues to expand and increase its client base, offering another site allows more availability at Newport for emergencies and urgent cases.

“Lockdown has seen an increase in the number of pets people have bought and adopted and this has had a knock-on effect on the need

for neutering and vaccinations so the new branch can easily cope with that extra demand,” said VH practice manager Katy Hockham.

Since opening at the start of the year, the Veterinary Hospital team has been busy getting to know the Skellingthorpe community. This has seen an extra vet consulting in the mornings to extend consultation times. They are encouraging routine operations at the 32 Lincoln Road surgery as there can sometimes be a two-three week waiting time to book in at Newport. The new surgery also offers a much quieter atmosphere for the more nervous patients too.

“Skellingthorpe has been designed to have the same feel and look of Newport but on a smaller scale. The team who run the new site were existing staff at VH, so they are already well embedded in the VH standards and procedures.

“This means that clients can move from one site to another and still see familiar faces. Being an independent practice, the VH team know that seeing the same vet, nurse or receptionist is one of the key reasons that clients want to stay with VH. “Did you know that you can always specify what vet you would like to see at VH so your pet gets continuity of care?”

Let nature help us heal the planet THERE’S something very satisfying about planting a tree.

Firming the roots into the soil and knowing that the tiny sapling could live for tens, possibly hundreds of years.

In the tree’s lifetime, it will be a home to a host of different wildlife; provide shade, shelter and sanctuary; and lock away large amounts of carbon.

Trees are beautiful, majestic and almost magical in their impact on our lives and the planet. They can capture carbon, clean water, freshen air, reduce the impacts of flooding, protect soils from erosion and enhance our wellbeing.

If you follow the news, you’ll have heard about upcoming tree planting schemes, the Government’s planting targets and Prince Charles’ call to plant a tree to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

More trees and woodlands are certainly needed. In one of the least wooded countries in Europe, Lincolnshire is one of the least wooded counties. We could and should plant more. Trees do have a role to play in helping to deliver nature’s recovery and tackle the climate crisis. However, delve a little deeper and the picture isn’t quite so clear.

Tree planting is not the magic bullet for cutting CO2 emissions and even if we hit the ambitious targets for new woodland, this would only offset a fraction of our current and future emissions.

Efforts to dramatically reduce fossil fuel use should remain our top priority and there are some circumstances where tree planting is just not appropriate.

We need to recognise the value of other habitats in tackling the climate crisis. Woodlands are not the only habitat that lock away carbon.

undisturbed by arable agriculture and tidal saltmarshes that buffer against coastal erosion, also lock away carbon. Peat bogs can store more carbon than any other habitat on land. But when damaged, instead of storing carbon, these habitats release it.

As we strive to plant more trees, we need to ensure that we learn from the mistakes of the past. In the 1980s, upland peat bogs were drained and planted with row after row of non-native conifer trees.

As a result, huge amounts of carbon were released into the atmosphere. Now there is a risk that other important habitats will meet the same fate.

We also need to recognise that it takes more than planting trees to create a woodland.

Natural woodland ecosystems are dynamic environments which develop over hundreds of years. They contain complex networks and relationships, above ground and within the soils, between a huge array of species. Simply planting trees does not create the diverse native woodlands we need to combat the dual climate and nature emergencies.

Natural regeneration is when the trees themselves produce new seedlings and the woodland establishes without the need to plant expensive saplings. It isn’t the answer for every situation but it is more cost effective and trees established by regeneration are more likely to be better adapted to local climatic and environmental conditions. By embracing these natural processes, new woodlands can be created and existing ones expanded and the results are woodlands with a more natural species and structural composition.

The climate and ecological crises that we face are closely linked and we have to tackle them both. We need to protect and enhance our existing wild habitats, the meadows, wetlands and bogs. And we must allocate the space for nature’s recovery. Liquorice Park

Summer in the city park

Liquorice Park volunteers taking a well-earned break.

Word And IMAGEs dAHLIA LEE WE have just returned home from a bracing walk around Liquorice Park where we stomped along the paths and through the copses dodging frequent persistent showers.

Despite returning home rather windswept and a little soggy, we are feeling uplifted and inspired. That is not unusual after a walk in our lovely local greenspace, but today was a little different as we have experienced a small but poignant pop up art installation created by Fine Art students from the University of Lincoln.

They chose the park as a perfect backdrop for their magical creations, green tree sprites were to be found hidden in the ivy, miniature mossy gardens hung in glass orbs and colourful swirling portal paintings glowed between the trees (bottom picture).

It is such a pleasure to see this wonderful community space being used as a creative venue, and watching others exploring and sharing our enjoyment. Because, although the park is a haven for wildlife, and above all else we are striving to protect and promote the flourishing biodiversity, we also aim to encourage a diverse audience of visitors and volunteers, as the park is here for people too.

New visitors are often amazed by this pleasant space with its lush greenery, playful topiary, quirky sculpture and relaxed atmosphere. Local residents claim a real attachment to the park as they have grown so fond of it, and to us and many others it is quite simply an extension of our own gardens.

Despite the cold spring, dry April and wet May punctured with gales and hailstorms, nature has soldiered on bravely, if a little tardily, with its usual tremendous blossom filled vigour. It has been a pleasure to explore and witness the seasons turn, 50

Bailgate Independent | Summer 2021

watching the leaves unfurling, the sap rising, the early spring blooms giving way to the first summer flowers.

The volunteers, who really are the life blood of this park, have returned with a greater force than ever and a fabulous bunch of interesting people, of all ages, from all walks of life who share a passion for gardening, nature and the environment.

The beautifully maintained paths have never meandered so far, exploring enticing new routes through the bramble patches, whilst the wilder areas are being conserved and protected by new dry hedging and planting.

The recently cleared spaces around the trees have sprouted up with unexpected abundance in a surprising mix of self-seeded cultivated and wild flowers. The community herb garden is springing to life with the new beds, plants and seating, and the reroofed compost area has been very busy collecting precious rain water ready to sustain the planting through the dryer periods.

The birds have been diligently tending their nests and fledglings, and the bees, bugs and butterflies are just getting into their stride.

The flower beds have bounced up with a splendid riot of sumptuous colour in a heady mix of garden plants and wild flowers -all tremendous food sources for our precious pollinators. As the blossom and tulips step back a new wave of summer plants are now taking centre stage and will flower through to the autumn.

It really is worth taking a pause to admire all that is happening on the park this summer.

Climate Change in Lincoln Survey

Have your say on city’s action for climate change LINCOLN’S ambition to be a carbon neutral city by 2030 can be achieved if people work together.

That’s the view of Kate Bell (pictured) who is tasked with encouraging local people and communities to take action - both as the City of Lincoln’s Climate Change Manager and a member of the Lincoln Climate Commission, which is made up of organisations and businesses working together to make positive choices on energy, climate, carbon and weather.

But how much do people know about Climate Change? Where do they get their information from? How has it affected their local area and do they know what steps they could take to help their city become carbon neutral?

All these questions – and a few more – are part of a fact-finding survey Kate has put together with the Commission which they would like as many city residents as possible to complete before June 30.

To achieve zero carbon by 2030 city-wide emissions will need to reduce by 11 per cent every year.

The city council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 after it became apparent the issue was important to residents and voters.

“The city council declared the Climate Emergency because in recent elections they had been asked about climate change more and more. It was clear that this was something people were increasingly very concerned about,” said Kate.

The council accepted the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2018 findings that: ‘the world’s leading climate scientists warned that humanity has only 12 years left in which to cap temperature rises at 1.5oC or face a higher risk of drought, floods and heatwaves’.

The council recognised that: “Urgent action to combat the climate and emergencies is essential to protect future wellbeing of all citizens in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, nationally and internationally.”

Kate added: “It was overwhelmingly supported - the council would not have gone ahead with declaring a Climate Emergency without that feedback, but there also has to be action from residents, communities and businesses for Lincoln to become carbon neutral.

“We’ve seen the desire is there, so the council and the commission need to make sure we’re providing all the help we can for people to do their bit.

“The survey will help us do that. It is a comprehensive review of what people understand by climate change and how it is already affecting them.”

LAS show packed with artistic flair ART lovers are being treated to a second exhibition showcasing the skills and techniques of the county’s creatives.

The Lincolnshire Artists’ Society’s ‘Vista’ will contain a diverse selection of numerous recent works and gives the large cohort of new members an opportunity to show work with the society for the second time.

The portaits are all handmade by Eilish in glass: “This collection has included the likes of many of the greats from Bowie, to Freddie Mercury to Frida Kahlo, all of whom are a great inspiration to myself as an artist.”

Tilly Wilks

Talented Tilly has a passion for print WHEN it comes to young talent sometimes the artist themselves know best.

In the case of Tilly Wilks it is knowing how to combine work and leisure so her art remains her passion.

“I came out of school with an even spread of results across subjects, so choosing a direction for my higher education wasn’t easy. As a kid I loved tinkering with bikes and science experiments - the more hands on the better.

“But with interior and graphic designers as parents, I also appreciated the arts, with beautiful posters, patterns and prints warming the house. Ultimately I chose to study engineering, which nicely combines both. Following my undergraduate degree I started an internship at Johnson & Johnson during the pandemic, where I design hip implants.

“After the relentless exam cycles during my studies, in my internship I’m able to log-off at 5pm. During the long lockdown weeknights, I’m able to pour my spare time into printmaking.

I instantly fell in love with the multi-step nature of the process.

“In many ways, both engineering and printmaking are just translation - taking a concept and translating it into a physical or visual product, which I find fascinating. The planning of the positive and negatives in the design appeals to my logical background, but the organic nature of carving is entirely guided by feel and touch - something that I’ve never had a chance to explore before.

“Working remotely from Lincoln during this tough year has nurtured a deep appreciate for the place in which I was raised and every time I roll the Cathedral, Castle and Red Arrows prints I feel a real sense of comfort. I hope that others feel the same.

“I’m immensely grateful to do my print making alongside a job that I love - the pressure of using my art to fund my life has been removed, which I find best for my creativity. Consequently printmaking is a real passion project, which hopefully comes through in all of my pieces, and customer experience.”

Mel’s cityscape commission A COUPLE celebrating a special wedding anniversary approached city artist Mel Langton to create a special work.

“The couple really wanted a large, bespoke art piece that would reflect their love of Lincoln and their family, and so came about the idea of a unique and colourful personalised Lincoln city scene that they could display in their home,” said Mel. The 1.5m wide piece features special details the couple had requested, including tiny custom portraits of family members and even a nod to the NHS with the blue-lit cathedral and the RAF Red Arrows’ smoke.”

“The final design is almost like a personalised Where’s Wally of things that their family can enjoy trying to spot,” said Mel. “Having recently painted the City Trail Imp for this summer’s Lincoln Imp Trail I’m no stranger to drawing recognisable local landmarks.

“I am mostly commissioned to create special portraits and original artwork, so it was a real delight to be asked to create such a fun and colourful piece that combines the two within the theme of our beautiful city.”

Step back in time at Metheringham Airfield METHERINGHAM Airfield Visitor Centre will be opening its doors to the public again later this month.

The small museum is dedicated to the men and women who served in and supported 106 Squadron, Royal Air Force Bomber Command from 1943 until the end of the Second World War. The centre is a 20-minute drive from Lincoln near the village of Martin and following refurbishment in the winter months, it is opening its doors again on weekends and bank holidays from Saturday June 26.

The museum was founded in 1994 by local farmer Peter Scoley, who wanted to ensure the stories of RAF Metheringham and 106 Squadron could be told to future generations.

Based in buildings that were once part of the airfield’s communal site, the museum has been improved and expanded over the years.

“The museum’s wide range of exhibits give visitors a real sense of what it was like to live and work at RAF Metheringham during the war,” said Mark Farrow one of the dedicated volunteers who run the centre.

“Brand new for 2021 is the Commonwealth of Comrades exhibition, which tells the story of the men and women who came from across the globe to serve at the airfield.

“Visitors can experience each Lancaster bomber crew position, learn about the equipment each crew member used and the training they had to do. Another new feature is the Ditching Display, which features the museum’s rare World War 2 aircraft dinghy and a range of artefacts relating to ditching in the sea.”

The museum is also home to Dakota KG651, a veteran transport aircraft that saw service during the Second World War. “Representing similar aircraft from the US 52nd Troop Carrier Wing that carried wounded servicemen through RAF Metheringham on their journeys back to the United States, KG651 is being faithfully restored to its former glory,’ explained Mark.

“Visitors can board the aircraft and feel what it would have been like to have flown as a passenger on a Dakota, as well as sitting up front and getting a pilot’s eye view.”

The centre will be open 11am and 5pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays until the end of October.

Go plastic free in Lincoln this summer PLASTIC Free Lincoln is urging city residents to make a change this July to combat polymer pollution, writes REBECCA HARdy. The Plastic Free July campaign is a global movement encouraging people worldwide to cut down on their plastic use for a month.

This year the city’s group is supporting residents and businesses to lower their single-use plastic consumption by sharing information across social media. (See also page 51).

“We are planning to give our community top tips on reducing plastic and making more sustainable shopping choices,” said Louise Brown, co-leader of Plastic Free Lincoln.

“Everyone can get involved in Plastic Free July and it’s up to individuals, schools, businesses and community groups how they get involved.”

Along with sharing information, Plastic Free Lincoln will be running a series of workshops to celebrate local plastic-free heroes with more information on dates and speakers yet to be finalised across their social media channels.

The group aims to support residents and local businesses throughout July, by offering advice and guidance on ways to reduce plastic and lead a greener lifestyle.

“We love a Plastic Pledge and we recommend that a good start is to look at what single-use plastics you use regularly. Then, make your Plastic Pledge by simply picking 3 single-use plastic things that you can swap for a non-plastic thing,” explained Louise.

Suggestions for how residents can achieve this include swapping your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one, buying soap bars rather than liquid soap in plastic bottles or making sure you take your reusable coffee cup with you when you leave the house.

For Lincoln businesses, it is possible to achieve the status of Plastic-Free Champion by making a plastic free pledge and getting in touch with Plastic Free Lincoln who present champions with an award – which is completely free of plastic of course!

Mental health a priority for new mayor COUNCILLOR Jackie Kirk has become the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lincoln and has become the city’s 814th First Citizen.

The city council’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place at The Chapter House, Lincoln Cathedral a year later than planned, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The outgoing Mayor, Cllr Sue Burke is the first Mayor of Lincoln to serve for a term of more than one year, since Charles Thomas Parker was Mayor of Lincoln from 19151919, during the First World War. Cllr Kirk served as Deputy Mayor for two years: “I’m both honoured and excited to represent the

spiritual inspiration for Caroline PIANIST and composer Caroline Leighton has recently published two new pieces of spiritually inspired music.

The county-based musician has twice lived with orders of nuns – her latest retreat was four months living with Carmelite nuns in Norfolk discerning religious life before moving back to Lincolnshire.

Mary In The Garden is an anthem for twopart voices and piano with The Christ Child is a Christmas SATB with piano for published by Encore for which Caroline wrote the words and music.

This was the conclusion of many years of contemplation on a spiritual path for Caroline who has also spent time with the Poor Clares in Arundel, West Sussex.

“The sisters live in a rural community of 23 nuns, who live, work, laugh and pray according to the form of life drawn up by St Clare of Assisi in 1253,” explained Caroline.

“Chanting plays a huge role in their lives, and this deeply meditative music is providing a moment of solace for listeners across the globe, amid the challenges the world continues to face during the pandemic.”

The Poor Clares’ spiritual album, Light for the World, took the No.1 spot in both the Classical Artist Album Chart and Classical Specialist Album Chart after its release last October.

Caroline has been achieving her own successes since early in her career having been twice awarded Classical Pianist of the Year whilst at Leeds College of Music where she specialised in performance and Lieder (German songs from the 19th C), accompanying acclaimed sopranos Barbara Bonney, Lynne Dawson and the leading soloists of Opera North.

In her final year she guested on BBC Radio 3 to discuss Dr. Fanny Waterman's influence on piano teaching and the Leeds Piano Competition. Caroline's choral music has been performed across the UK, with recent highlights including Ave Verum Corpus at Westminster Abbey.

She has worked with distinguished musicians Adrian Partington, whose Youth Choir at Gloucester Cathedral first performed her Evensong Canticles in 2015, and has accompanied choral workshops for Nigel Perrin, David Lawrence and Alexander L'estrange.

On All Souls Day, 2019, Caroline worked with composer and conductor Matthew Coleridge in a 'Come and Sing' workshop and performance of his Requiem. Movements of Caroline's

Claire is new High Sheriff

CLAIRE Birch of Doddington Hall (pictured) has been appointed new High Sheriff of Lincolnshire for the next year.

The role goes back to the 12th century and is the oldest royal appointment still in existence. High Sheriffs support the judiciary, emergency services and crime prevention, and in recent times the role has expanded into encouraging, supporting and thanking the voluntary sector, especially those organisations working with people at risk of offending and the victims of crime.

Tax cost of crypto-currencies dAVId NICHOLSON, dIRECTOR, dExTER ANd SHARPE (LINCOLN) LTd IT is scarcely possible to read the financial pages of the newspapers without seeing a new story on crypto-currencies.

There is now a bewildering array of coins.

Bitcoin was the first to make a splash but there are now 65 listed on Coinbase. Just a couple of weeks ago there was a report of a Goldman Sachs executive retiring after making millions from an investment in dogecoin (reportedly founded as “a joke”).

Fuelling the rise in dogecoin were the social media posts of Tesla founder Elon Musk.

We have been here before, with the price of Bitcoin spiking on the back of a pronouncement that Tesla would start to take payment for their cars in the coin.

This was followed just a couple of weeks later by an equally vertiginous fall in the price after he announced that he had changed his mind. He recognised the environmental cost of a coin that is “mined” by using the vast amounts of processing power necessary to solve the algorithm behind the coin. Coming at the same time as a Chinese government crackdown on cryptocurrencies it fell by 30% in a day.

despite the twists and turns in the major cryptocurrencies, undoubtedly some people have made significant gains. The secrecy surrounding these currencies does not mean that such gains escape the taxman even if it makes them harder to track.

Early guidance from HMRC recognised the policy that the proceeds of cryptoassets could be characterised as gambling and hence tax-free.

It is no surprise that their position has changed, and HMRC now has a manual devoted to guidance for their staff on the taxation of cryptocurrency gains.

Unless you are trading (for instance, mining the currency) cryptoassets are broadly taxed on the same basis as shares, with assets of the same class being pooled; purchases and sales are added to the pool and the gain on disposals taxed based on the average cost within the pool. Sounds simple in theory but there are complications within the rules that identify certain sales with specific purchases (e.g. same day acquisitions and disposals).

However, do not think that tax is the only hazard of cryptocurrencies. Spare a thought for James Howells who mistakenly threw away a hard drive containing the keys for 7,500 Bitcoin. Still valid, but inaccessible without the keys those coins are, at today’s price, worth around £200 million!

Great to be back working in Bailgate after lockdown TIM BRAdFORd, MANAGING dIRECTOR, BANKS LONG & CO. IF you have been wandering around the Bailgate area in the last few weeks, I hope you might have noticed that a new logo has appeared outside our office.

The updated logo, which took considerable work to develop and I’m very proud of, incorporates a circle made up of four colours, each of which represents one of our new divisions. The team, however, have quickly given it the nickname of ‘The beach ball’, so a new look but still no delusions of grandeur here.

The Banks Long team, now at nearly 40 people, is very proud to be part of the Bailgate community. Some of you will remember that, for many years, our office was opposite the train station on St. Mary’s Street.

I still remember an incident, several years before we helped the Co-op develop the Cornhill Quarter, that swayed our decision to move to the Bailgate.

A senior executive from a very high-end retail brand came up on the train from London to meet us, with the prospect of opening a store in Lincoln.

After arriving two hours early, she wandered around the Sincil Street and St Mary’s Street area and, so unimpressed by her surroundings, cancelled the meeting.

I believe this particular incident reflected more on her than it did on the area, but how I wish I could bring her back for another look, we now get big brands calling us and asking if

they can move to the Cornhill Quarter, what a turnaround.

It’s a privilege to work in the historical surroundings of the Bailgate, though, as I’m sure many of you can attest, you can quickly forget that you work in the shadow of a castle designed by William the Conqueror; drive to the office through a Roman arch or have a beer after work in the shadow of a 900-year-old cathedral. Returning after lockdown has helped us appreciate the Bailgate even more.

I believe that the Bailgate is one of the most unique and impressive areas of any city in the UK. It never fails to impress guests.

Having said that, following the considerable work on the Cornhill Quarter, it doesn’t matter anymore if visitors arrive by train or come directly to the Bailgate, they are always amazed by Lincoln and what it has to offer.

We are very proud to be playing a small part in the transformation of this great City and expanding as a business as we do so. In fact, one of our constant issues now is finding enough surveyors to join our team. Owned and run by husband-and-wife Karl and Anne Marie Hanson, both of whom have other jobs, the Bowl Full is open on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Having only recently re-opened with the easing of lockdown, we are looking forward to having people back dining inside the restaurant.

“The nights are about the buzz and the atmosphere, seeing people enjoying the effort you have put into the food and the service. It may take a little while to fully get back to normal but fingers crossed it’s not that far away!”

Lockdown however, led to a need to adapt with a focus on online sales and ‘doorstep’ deliveries. Rob explained: “Whilst we were quick to develop and promote our online sales, it is great to be able to receive customers again in the shop. It is certainly the best way to promote, experience and even sample our array of wines on offer. It allows us to spend more time with those looking to draw on our wine knowledge.

Taking time to look back on the last year, Jamie said: “It has been a challenging period for our business, perhaps ironically, lockdown did give rise to people looking to improve their homes.

Spending more time at home provided people with the chance to do something they might not have had time to do, such as consider a new kitchen, which led to a good level of enquiries and projects.

“On the other hand, supply issues in

terms of materials and having to work in a Covid secure way has been problematic to say the least. Coming out of lockdown has somewhat seen an easing of the situation and our designers and fitters are happy to be back to some sense of normality. “ I have really appreciated the support and guidance I have received from Streets not just on the accounting side from Partner Chris Hubbard, but as importantly, the personal financial planning I have received from Sam Tindale. All at Streets have supported me with accessing assistance from the Covid support measures introduced by the Chancellor.”

FOSSDYKE House in Saxilby has a rich, interesting history that has seen the 19th century building come full circle through remodelling and renovations Current owners Martin and Mel Holliday bought the house in 1994 after it had been through a modernist post-war refurbishment and began restoring the home to its former glory Working on their home led the Hollidays to discover that in the 1800s Saxilby’s Malt House and a small brewery could be found in the grounds of Fossdyke House, which is thought to have been built originally for the brewmaster – however he never moved in choosing to rent it out instead.

It was used as the medical practice and home of Dr Horace Rainbird (pictured) and featured large bay windows and outside toilets towards the rear of the house, which was normal for the period.

Dr Horace was succeeded in the practice by his son, Dr Percival, and all the Rainbird children had their lessons at home, so a tutor’s house was also situated at the back of the main house with a room upstairs for teaching.

The home was maintained in this style until the first half of the 20th century.

“There was a fire just before World War Two, which led to the maltings being bulldozed as all of the men went off to war, which meant it was never used after that,” explained Mel. Dr Maiden and his family moved into Fossdyke House in the 1950s (top picture) and chose to have Lincoln-born architect, Sam Scorer design them a modern home.

The result was a stripped-back, minimalist look, with the bay windows being replaced with large, flat windows with aluminium frames - second from top picture taken during the 1969 works.

“They removed all of the period windows out and made it very 1960s,” said Mel. “The doctor’s offices were above the kitchen and had a balcony that looked down which was very modern in the sixties. The design was very open plan, with flat doors and tiny skirting boards.”

When the Hollidays bought the property they decided to renovate the original features of the house before the 1960s makeover and remove additions such as the balcony over the kitchen.

“When we bought it, it had been empty for probably about five or six years. It was really tired and really rundown.

“What’s strange is we’ve taken it back to almost the same state as it was before the 1960s. We’ve almost brought it back to where it was, especially with the bay windows.”

The Hollidays also located the headquarters of their business, Chiselwood on the site with a workshop and design offices that pay homage to the original maltings.

“Martin was able to take some details from old photographs to see what the bay windows originally looked like and took inspiration to restore them.

“They would have had a window tax in years gone by, so they had lots of blocked up windows in buildings.”

Luxury Eco Living

New green homes top of the tree FAMILY holidays inspired Martin and Mel Holliday to design and develop six new eco-homes in Saxilby, writes REBECCA HARDy. “Each year we used to go to Center Parcs and when we started seeing the treehouses, that was the inspiration to create the design with the wooden cladding and the upside-down living, so that you felt as though you were actually living in the trees.

“The eco part has developed as we’ve spoken to clients while working on their homes, many of which were passive homes or had eco elements in them. When we started to design our eco-homes, we felt that while designing homes for the future, the environmental elements were very important.,” explained Mel. Each aspect of the homes focuses on how environmentally and economically friendly they can be, which has brought up many considerations for the couple during the design process.

“There’s a garden area over the garage, which is a balcony, so you can see the canal. We felt this view would be perfect for the living area, rather than the bedrooms on the lower levels,” said Mel. “You won’t have to worry about keeping it warm or keeping it cool because there will be circulated air all the time, there’s airsource pumps so it is heated in the most economical way.”

Along with the considerations of the running of the house, such as the heating and water systems, Martin and Mel also thought carefully about what appliances to use in the design of kitchen spaces – something right up their street as the owners of Chiselwood Ltd. The Chiselwood designers planned in ample storage and ecofriendly appliances including an innovative down-draft extractor and hob system from BORA and fridge, freezer, microwave combination and an oven from Sub-Zero & Wolf.

“Sub-Zero appliances have separate compressors, for both the fridge and freezer, which are located right at the top of the appliance, so you can access the compressors really easily. This also means that if you opened the fridge for 10 minutes, it wouldn’t impact on the freezer and vice versa,” explains Mel. “The design is very streamlined and the appliances benefit from advanced technology that maintains a temperature and filters the air, with the idea being that the food then lasts longer.”

The eco-homes also benefit from heat recovery systems, underfloor heating and are heavily insulated to ensure the temperature is consistent throughout the seasons.

Change in the weather climate was also considered when designing the homes.

“The houses actually have sunken gardens and permeable drives, so that if there is heavy rainfall, this will divert the water away from the houses while keeping the plants moist. We also have gone for low lighting, so that there won’t be light pollution.”

In line with green techniques, it has also been important to source environmentally friendly materials which includes recycled products and sustainable timber as well as ‘future proofing’ the houses and ensuring they were quite low maintenance for their new residents.

“For example, maybe not everybody will have an electric car now, but in five years’ time, most people will, so the power points are in the garage ready for electric cars.”
