Lincoln Cathedral connected ‘The doors are always open... A lot of what we are doing this year is to get people to understand that it is a space for them.’

For example the Changing Spaces facilities at the new visitor centre are for people with severe disabilities and provide amenities uphill that mirror those provided at the city’s bus station. “Because it’s quite difficult not to see the cathedral on the landscape of Lincoln, it is a powerful backdrop for everything from the football stadium to the Red Arrows flying over, so it is really important for us to play our part in the life of the city - it is about us all flourishing together.”

LINCOLN Cathedral is a space for everyone to use and enjoy. That’s the message from the Acting Dean of Lincoln, The Venerable Mark Steadman (pictured right) ahead of a year packed with significant events for the minster and city. They include the culmination of the Cathedral Connected Project, which received £12.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards a varied programme of work to enhance the visitor experience – a new state-of-the-art visitor centre will open in July. New environmentally friendly exterior lighting with programmed coloured sequences has been widely welcomed and is set to herald events and occasions throughout 2020. The first Flower Festival since 2012 will start on July 30 with over 130 displays representing everything from the Industrial Revolution to Harry Potter and the cathedral community will also be joining the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower and the 800th anniversary of the death of St Hugh. The cathedral will also take part in Lincoln’s major art attraction, the Imp Trail, based on its infamous demon in a classic tale of good versus evil. “It’s about coming into the building, it’s about celebration and that’s at the core of what we do,” said Mark, the Archdeacon of Stow, who believes the cathedral has an important role to play in the wider Lincoln community while underpinning its religious foundations. “My job is to lead the life of the cathedral along side my clergy and other colleagues, which is a huge privilege. ‘The building was started in 1072 and we have been here ever since and still used for the original purpose for which it was built and that is to host a daily pattern of worship and prayer. “We have over 30 services every week and from that springs everything else we do hospitality, welcome, education, heritage events. “The doors are always open from early in the morning to early in the evening and a lot of what we are doing this year is to underline that…to get people to understand, that it is for them and it is a space that everyone can come in to enjoy. “Our challenge is to organise events that encourage more people to come into the building.” The Cathedral Connected project addresses that challenge as does its work with multiple partners including both universities, City of Lincoln Council, Lincoln BIG and Visit Lincoln.

Lincoln BIG Events The Imp Trail was unveiled by Lincoln BIG chief Sarah Loftus.

It’s time to get out and about with Lincoln BIG Spring has sprung and it’s time to get ready for a packed programme of events to enjoy in the weeks ahead. There’s an amazing mix of exciting happenings on the horizon and Lincoln BIG is leading the way with some super treats up its sleeve. That means the Business Improvement Group can share some tempting hints, but some plans are still evolving and need to be kept under wraps. The Street Food Festival returns on April 1 on the city’s High Street and Cornhill, where there will be plenty to tempt the taste buds. April 19 is an unmissable date if you love the iconic Mini. The Lincoln BIG Mini Day, with around 200 vehicles, which park-up on the city’s Brayford Waterfront, features a fantastic collection, including standard and highly customised cars. Talking of looking good – no-one is going to want to miss this year’s Lincoln Fashion Week, which is taking place from May 23 to 29. Nothing stays the same in the world of fashion, and Lincoln BIG’s production will also be throwing some stylish changes. We’re really excited at the prospect of this event – which grows ever more popular year-on-year - but we are still busy behind the scenes pulling together a Fantabulous Festival for Fashionistas of all ages! As Hello Lincoln went to press, we were devising a crazy catwalk, talking about an event where dogs (yes, that’s right!) get to strut their stuff, and another fashion session involving cars. June 7 will see Lincoln BIG welcome a super attraction for fans of two-wheeled transport, the annual Bike Fest, which takes place on the city’s Brayford Waterfront. Get the date in your diary! July 4 signals the arrival of our star attraction of the year, when Lincoln BIG unveils its fantastic Lincoln IMP Trail to the public. We can’t wait to see our trail of about 30 full-sized, colourfully painted and characterful sculptures in position. We are determined it will be our best trail ever. Everything is progressing well, with Imp sponsors in place, artists giving each sculpture its own identity and individual sponsors thinking about where they will take theirs on tour. If you love listening to street music as you are shopping or relaxing in the city, the same day (July 4) the Lincoln BIG Busking Festival will also be taking place in Uphill Lincoln.

Award Winning Afternoon Tea. Served daily.

by Whitney Jones THE Lincoln Festival of Creativity will return to the city for the fourth consecutive year, bringing together the University of Lincoln, local businesses and the wider community. The two-week-long event, will be held from May 26 – June 5 including the weekend and celebrates emerging talent from the University, giving students a chance to exhibit their work in more than 20 art college shows including 2D and 3D design, digital and traditional media, photography, film, music, fashion and performance arts. Gyles Lingwood, College of Arts Director of Education at the University of Lincoln and co-founder of the festival has watched the festival grow in popularity since its inaugural showcase in 2017 – last year was attended by over 3,500 visitors. “We’re expecting the festival to bring in 5,000 people this year which is really exciting,” said Gyles. He added the events not only benefits students from the university but also allows local businesses to take part in workshops to help develop innovative ideas. The one-day workshop, ‘Creativity Reimagined’, aims to open-up business owners’ minds to the power of creativity, help them overcome hurdles and develop their innovative ideas to grow their businesses. The first week falls in half-term and is a great place for families to visit to get their imagination racing. Young people can take part in the events with its annual competition, Lincolnshire Young Designer of the Year 2020. It celebrates the creativity and innovation of rising talent of secondary school children and sixth formers. “We say, enter your best piece of coursework from either GCSEs or A-Levels and we will judge it and put it alongside our degree work.” “It’s a Lincoln city festival, not just a university event. The ambition of this festival is to get local business or even the local economy to see the university as a place of inspiration,” said Gyles.

Welcome to the heart of Lincolnshire Nestling south of Lincoln lies North Kesteven, the Heart of Lincolnshire. Surrounded with beautiful, unspoilt countryside NK is a place brimming with history, heritage and great places to visit, whatever your age and budget.

Fascinating history of RAF Cranwell, the first military air academy in the world. Grade II listed Navigation House thought to be the only one of its kind left in existence. A restored working watermill in a picturesque setting by the River Slea.

Lincoln Book Festival reveals top novelists, historians and journalists in this year’s line-up of literary stars. Author, journalist and broadcaster Will Self (above), food critic, writer and presenter William Sitwell (below), and best-selling historian and novelist Alison Weir are among the high profile guest speakers confirmed in the line-up for Lincoln Book Festival 2020. Lincoln’s annual literary festival returns this year with a new springtime spot in the calendar, moving from its previous September dates to take place from 11-16 May. Highlights include an appearance by Will Self (Wednesday 13 May, Lincoln Drill Hall) who will be talking about his writing career and his brutally honest new memoir, Will (Viking, 2019). A funny, candid memoir about his own drug addiction in the 1980s, The Spectator called it “a masterpiece of black humour”. Lincoln Book Festival 2020 opens (Monday 11 May, The Collection) with a focus on food as William Sitwell of MasterChef fame discusses his much anticipated new book The Restaurant: A History of Eating Out (Simon & Schuster, 2020). Genres jump dramatically to explore a post-apocalyptic crime thriller with novelist Hanna Jameson (Tuesday 12 May, The Collection). Her new novel, The Last (Viking, 2019), was a Waterstones Thriller of the Month praised by The Telegraph as “Compulsively readable”. The festival returns to its roots for a celebration of the best new history writing (Saturday 16 May, The Collection) with medieval historians Alison Weir and David Carpenter. Alison Weir is one of the UK’s best-selling historians having sold more than three million books worldwide. Her Six Tudor Queens series of novels about the wives of Henry VIII has been lauded by The Times as “likely to become a landmark in historical fiction”. The fifth book in the series, Katheryn Howard: The Tainted Queen, is released on 14 May 2020 (Headline Review). On the same evening David Carpenter, Professor of Medieval History at King’s College London, will be talking about his new book on the rise to power of Henry III in the time of Magna Carta.

Lincoln Performing Arts Centre Entertainment Spoilt for choice at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre Lincoln Performing Arts Centre’s new season of events is packed-full of top-notch comedy, literary classics, world music, classical concerts, contemporary theatre, ballet and family entertainment. Here’s a handful of the highlights from Artistic Director Craig Morrow. LPAC has become a haven for emerging comedians, breaking onto the mainstream circuit. Harry Baker – previously performed in Lincoln as one half of the double act Harry and Chris in the Roundabout at POP OUT Festival – returns on Friday, March 27 with his soloshow Harry Baker: I Am 10,000. The mathematician-turned-World-Slam-Champion is 10,000 days old; celebrating numbers, words and life itself. Harry’s love of language and logic are woven into a fast-paced, side-splitting and cranium-cranking stand-up comedy gig. If you’re seeking a gothic masterpiece of tempestuous passions and dark secrets, then look no further than Blackeyed Theatre’s production of Jane Eyre (pictured), coming to

Lincoln for two nights on Thursday and Friday, April 2-3. Blackeyed Theatre, one of the UK’s leading touring theatre companies, have built a strong reputation for touring well-known classic texts – plays that people really want to see – and bringing these stories to life on the stage in a way that still surprises, provokes and inspires. There’s also plenty of excuses for a trip to the theatre with the kids. Fans of Fireman Sam, Noddy, Shimmer & Shine and more will love Milkshake Live! Milkshake Monkey’s Musical, featuring all of your favourite TV characters alongside two Milkshake! presenters, coming to Lincoln on Friday, May 29. For slightly older children (and, let’s face it, grown-ups too) Horrible Histories are touring a brand new stage show Horrible Histories: The Worst of Barmy Britain on Sunday , May 24. Their previous show received much acclaim, including feedback from Lincoln audiences, “They said poo! Five times – and then some more! It was brilliant!” Felicity, age 5 ¾.

New Theatre Royal Lincoln

Welcome to the Jungle (Book)

Pantomimes aren’t just for Christmas! The New Theatre Royal Lincoln promises an Easter Pantomime adventure for all the family when The Jungle Book runs from Monday-Sunday April 13 – 19. Back by popular demand, Chris Johnson (CBBC’s Yonko) will star as the Monkey King and Kaa, and will also be credited for writing the script.

Chris is no stranger to the New Theatre Royal after appearing in every Christmas and Easter pantomime since Cinderella in 2017, becoming a true Lincoln audience favourite. Chris is looking forward to returning to Lincoln: “I’m delighted to re-join the wonderful ‘NTR Presents’ team once again for what’s guaranteed to be a swinging time in the jungle. Lincoln holds a very special place in my heart so getting to write and perform another show here is an absolute joy!” Chris will be joined by Michelle Morris as Shere Khan. Best known for her TV appearances in The Knock, Doctor Who, and Endeavour, Michelle has an endless list of theatre credits spanning over two decades, including The Wicked Witch in last year’s Easter pantomime, The Wizard of Oz, and Fairy Stardust in New Theatre Royal’s latest Christmas pantomime, Robin Hood. Packed with high energy dance routines, popular songs, and a witty script, this family-favourite story continues New Theatre Royal’s tradition of presenting Easter pantomimes. The theatre’s Artistic Director, Natalie Hayes-Cowley, will produce and direct the show: “This will be our seventh in-house pantomime since we took over the theatre in 2016 and our Easter pantomimes are becoming increasingly popular among our patrons. “Unlike other venues, we don’t receive any external

funding. This makes our in-house productions, including our pantomimes, incredibly important because we are able to attain a larger proportion of the tickets sales, opposed to other visiting shows where we only see about 15% of the ticket sales. This can then be reinvested back into the theatre to help keep our doors open. “And I really can’t wait for everyone to see The Jungle Book, it’s going to be another brilliant show.”

Mayflower 2020

Discover 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth UK to Plymouth Massachusetts. Although the ship set sail on the south coast, it was in the East Midlands area of England that people formed their ideas, with one of the leading Separatists, William Brewster, coming from Scrooby in North Nottinghamshire. A group of Separatists were also thought to have worshipped in secret at Gainsborough Old Hall (above) – now regarded as one of the bestpreserved medieval manor houses in Britain – with the permission of its sympathetic owner, merchant William Hickman. Their preacher, John Smyth, was a strong influence on the Mayflower Pilgrims, and is generally considered to have later been a founder of the Baptist churches. Sunday 12 April 2pm

Mayflower 2020

The Hall is now a much-loved visitor attraction within the town open seven days a week. Times vary throughout the year. Please check www.gainsborougholdhall.com before visiting. A new exhibition is also due to open this spring which tells the story of the Gainsborough Separatists who fled to Amsterdam in 1608 in search of religious freedom. To mark this historic date there will also be a special event on Sunday, May 10 at the Old Hall. Visitors can enjoy a day full of activities and performances, music and fun for all ages including a reduced rate of £2.50 admission to the Hall. There will also be a chance to see the Hall’s new exhibition as well as the schools exhibition which has a Mayflower theme. Gainsborough’s United Reformed Church (below left) also stands as a memorial to John Robinson, pastor of the Mayflower Pilgrims. He was one of the leaders in

the planning of the voyage to America. Inside the church, you can visit the Mayflower Room, which is an impressive and informative display of the local history of the area’s Separatist ancestors, who played an important role during the historic voyage. A packed programme of events has also been planned for the year including special exhibitions, talks and tours. ‘I think that there is still a lot of stereotyping in society relating to the type of person that can pursue a STEM career’ - Kelsie

The college environment is completely inclusive and that’s why I love studying here. “At the minute I want to become a doctor, but in the past I’ve thought about becoming an astronomer, a forensic scientist, even going into space as an astronaut. “I think that there is still a lot of stereotyping in society relating to the type of person that can pursue a STEM career and I completely disagree with it. my career path and I hope that more girls will continue to do the same.” Lincoln UTC is currently accepting applications for its September 2020 intake in year 10 and year 12. An Open Event will be held at the UTC on Saturday, May 2 from 10am-2pm. Visit www.lincolnutc.co.uk for more information, to book a personal tour or apply online.

Learning & Culture

Data published in 2019 by the Department of Education highlighted that school girls in England are substantially less likely to consider taking STEM subjects at A Level in comparison to boys. Despite this both genders named STEM subjects as leading to the highest paid jobs. Lincoln UTC plays a fundamental role in encouraging girls in the local area to challenge this stereotype by providing the opportunity for 14-18 year olds to study a specialist curriculum based around science, technology, engineering and maths. In 2019 there was a 50% increase in the number of girls that joined the UTC to study as part of its Ofsted ‘outstanding’ sixth form. Year 13 leavers were also very successful in securing the next steps of their career, as 100% of the female engineers progressed into advanced apprenticeships at wellknown firms including Siemens and Wefco. Overall 31% of the current UTC student population is female. This figure has been rising year on year and the college are predicted to accept their largest intake of girls yet in September 2020. Learning & Culture

Celebrating creativity at Lincoln Minster School

“Pupil’s cultural and social experience is extended by art, visits to galleries and exhibitions.” The Art Department places emphasis on promoting and marketing artwork and Sixth Form students are encouraged to actively curate their own art exhibitions. This gives them a hands-on experience of working in the modern art world. One parent of a Year 12 student commented: “I am delighted that I chose to send my daughter here as the nature, depth and quality of the work she is undertaking far exceeds that of her previous school.” The Art Department has achieved considerable success in helping students secure places at their chosen universities to study Art related courses such as Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Fashion, and Photography. We encourage students to take risks and go beyond the A Level curriculum, so that they can nurture and explore their unique, artistic talents. Our university success rate is testament to the individual attention each teacher devotes to every student – with 98% achieving their first choice university or insurance offer. email communications@lincolnminsterschool.co..uk www.lincolnminsterschool.co.uk, T: 01522 551300.

Learning & Culture

Here at Lincoln Minster School, we celebrate individuality. Our approach towards education encourages true artistic freedom, preparing pupils for a limitless and global education for life, writes Head Master Mark Wallace. This is evident in our extensive co-curricular offer in academics, sport and across the arts – the universal language bringing people together. We provide a true education for life for our pupils, utilising opportunities across the world to consistently inspire creativity. The International High School Arts Festival in Japan is an event for secondary school pupils between 15-18 years of age, to showcase their artistic talent on an international level. Our annual involvement in the competition has seen great success so far, with our pupils achieving first place in 2019 and a finalist this year. Winning pupils can to travel to Tokyo, all expenses paid, to see their artwork displayed in the National Art Centre along with pieces from our runners-up. This reccurring achievement is a reflection of the high standard of teaching and education provided throughout the school, specifically within the Art Department. Recognised by ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate), inspectors as an impressive, dynamic department within the school, they reported:
