Safety first forces rethink of summer in the city CITY leaders have cancelled most of Lincoln’s summer events putting safety first as lockdown restrictions ease in the Covid19 pandemic.

As reported in last month’s Indie, Lincoln BIG chief executive Sarah Loftus had been willing to leave cancelling events until the very last minute while still being in line with government guidelines However, the Business Improvement Group has been working behind the scenes with partner organisations to form an after lockdown strategy (Lincoln Recovery Action Plan Covid-19) and had to concede putting safety first means events such as the much-anticipated Lincoln IMP Trail have been shelved until 2021.

“Lincoln BIG has also taken the decision to cancel the Bailgate Busking Festival, Lincoln by the Sea (the Beach), 1940s Weekend and the Morris Dancing Festival.

These decisions have been difficult to make but we are taking the safety of our residents and visitors seriously,” said Sarah.

“We will, however, be launching ‘IMP on

the Shelf ’ for Christmas for residents, businesses and visitors to enjoy.

“We have taken the decision to postpone the trail until 2021 to ensure that we meet the government’s guidelines for social distancing and not cluttering the High Street “Businesses and sponsors have also said that the IMP Trail means so much to the city that Lincoln BIG should wait to maximise its benefits for next year.”

Dates have not yet been set for 2021, but the IMP Trail will run over a significant period including the summer holidays. All 30 main Trail Imps and five Community Imps will be on display together with the Education Trail Imps, decorated by schools across the county.

The full IMP Trail leaflet will also be available with a children’s competition. A new interactive app will also be launched bringing new features and engagement opportunities. Souvenirs, merchandise and an auction catalogue will be available too. A farewell event will take place mid-

September with the auction on Lincolnshire Day, October 1, 2021 raising funds for charity partner, St Barnabas.

Trail sponsors will be given the opportunity to take their ‘Imp on Tour’ and with ‘Imp on the Shelf ’ Lincoln BIG aims to retain interest in the Trail prior to its launch. More information will come available over the next few months.

“The new plans will make the Lincoln IMP Trail bigger, better and more fun,” added Sarah.

“It will bring people back into the city and put a smile on people’s faces when it is safe to do so. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to our sponsors and Lincoln BIG levy payers and many feel it is the right thing to do. “ Decisions for events from mid September will be reviewed month on month in line with Government guidelines.

I promise not to use this column as some sort of cancer blog, but when you’ve got the Big C in the middle of the other Big C it concentrates the mind on the important things in life - like who your friends are.

I’m sure lockdown has been revealing in a huge variety of ways for us all.

There will have been some pleasant surprises and a few nasty shocks. Both will have a bearing on how we emerge and move on from lockdown.

We will need friends we can trust working together to put Lincoln back on the upward trajectory it had established before anyone had even heard of Covid-19.

Putting the city on the path to become one of the UK’s best places to live, work and visit had already taken a huge effort without the shadow of a pandemic hanging over us.

And, let’s be honest, the process hadn’t been without its back-biting, underhand dealing, rampant egos and even

betrayals.

There is no place for any of those shennigans if the new normal is going to become just that.

We need to be asking what we can do for Lincoln and not what can Lincoln do for us.

KEEPING IT BRIEF Walk the walls LINCOLN Castle has reopened its Medieval Wall Walk.

Visitors must pre-book tickets online via www.lincolncastle.com to enjoy some spectacular views of the city.

Laura Ince, site manager, explained the move marked the second phase of the castle’s reopening.

“We’ve had just under 10,000 visitors since opening, with no more than 100 visitors in the grounds at any one time, who have been enjoying our vast green open space, so reopening the wall walk and our café (for takeaway only) is really the next step.

“We’ve put a number of social distancing measures in place for the wall walk – so it will be one way, only allowing a certain number of visitors at any time, and a marked out queuing area.

Visitors will also have to enter and exit by the same area, so it can be marshalled.

Wheelchair access to the East section of the wall will remain available but will be limited to two wheelchair users at any one time.

New cycle route WORK has started on a new 1,500 metre stretch of cycle path from Bracebridge Heath to Branston.

The 1.5km cycle route will connect the A15 Sleaford Road near Bracebridge Heath to Lincoln Road (B1188) near Branston.

In total 7.5km of cycle path will run alongside Lincoln Eastern Bypass, with county-based Minster Group and national materials company Tarmac having completed 30% of the route to date.

The remaining sections are scheduled to be completed in autumn alongside the £120m bypass.

Trips to the tip NEW arrangements for county waste recycling centres have been introduced to allow safe and efficient use of the sites.

Users will need to book through https://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/clickandtip before visiting sites and need to take proof of residency in the county – entry will be refused without.

Mondays and Tuesdays will be for black-bagged general waste, scrap metal and electricals with tips closed on Wednesday/Thursday.

Cardboard, paper wood scrap metal, electricals and garden waste (no soil/rubble) can be dropped off on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays – the wrong waste type cannot be unloaded.

County tips saw more than 2,000 cars queueing to drop off waste on the first day of reopening on May 18.

Student land army needed BUSINESS leaders are calling on students to help bring in the harvest by volunteering at British farms during the COVID-19 pandemic this summer.

The UK is rapidly approaching peak summer harvest season and 80,000 seasonal workers are needed so the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership is urging sixth-formers and students at universities and colleges across the county to create a Student Land Army during their summer break.

“The food sector in Greater Lincolnshire employs 56,000 people, produces a quarter of the country’s vegetables and is nationally important in keeping our nation fed,” said Sarah Louise Fairburn, Chair of the Food Board at the LEP and a Director at Fairburns Eggs.

Stay safe while litter-picking

By ReBecca HaRdy LINCOLN residents are being urged to help keep their city litterfree by environmental champions.

Ryan Lovett (pictured), who runs CLEAN (Clean Lincoln Everywhere and Now) has reminded people to put safety first if they use relaxed lockdown restrictions to help clear rubbish from city streets and green spaces.

“If you’re able to get out for exercise and have either litter pick equipment or substantial gloves, take a shopping bag and sensibly choose the litter which can safely be collected and deposited in your bin at home,” said Ryan, a member of North Hykeham Town Council.

In 2018, Ryan started CLEAN to tackle litter in and around Lincoln when he faced obstacles to clearing rubbish such as lack of access to equipment, but now PPE can become part of the problem With the support of North Kesteven District Council he used this experience to set up a free loan of litter pick equipment for anybody wanting to keep the environment tidy.

Lockdown has also had some positive environmental impacts in the Lincoln area — according to Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust more nesting birds and even adders have been spotted in the city, along with a pair of otters in Brayford Pool.

Jade Oliver, Communications Officer at Lincs Wildlife Trust, has said it is important to dispose of litter correctly to protect our

thriving wildlife.

“Things like disposable gloves are made from plastic which is not biodegradable, meaning it will stay in the environment for hundreds of years. This can be a choking hazard for small mammals.

“We are not saying that PPE shouldn’t be used, as it is important to protect ourselves but use the litter bins to discard of them and where not provided, take your litter home with you.”

Although groups like CLEAN are unable to continue with their group litter picks at the moment, Ryan is continuing to collect litter when he can and would like to see how other people are keeping Lincoln tidy.

Phased action plan for Lincoln after lockdown A FLEXIBLE three-phase action plan for easing lockdown restrictions in Lincoln recognises it could be well into 2021 before the city is fully open for business.

The Lincoln Recovery Action Plan Covid-19 has been produced by BIG and City of Lincoln Council, in conjunction with Lincolnshire Police, University of Lincoln, retailers and Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce.

The report recognises the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;devastating impactâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Covid-19 has had on the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy, which is driven by retail and tourism and suggests a phased approach to easing restrictions, which is versatile enough to allow for some lockdown rules to be reintroduced if needed.

Phase One is currently underway and has the key message of Safety First, while Phase Two looks at a timescale from July 4 to December 2020 aiming to encourage people back to a Covid secure Lincoln. Phase Three looks at January 2021 and beyond and planning events to bring tourists back to the city.

The collective aims of the plan are: l Ensure the city is made safe and feels welcoming to people/residents/employees. l Develop a programme (events & activities) to bring people back into the city in a safe and controlled manner, or deliver them virtually to keep Lincoln in peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mind. l Adopt the destination brand into consumer facing COVID19 marketing and communications, building on the investment and engagement thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already been made. lManage a sensitive marketing campaign which encourages people back into the city (aligned with Government guidelines) or join virtual events. l Promote key messages that include â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;shop local, buy localâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; so the Lincoln business community is supported. l Offer tailored support to Lincoln businesses so they are prepared for the changing habits and expectations that shoppers, visitors, employees and consumers will have post COVID-19.

Video game an icebreaker for students

PIRATE ships, giant parrots, duelling university professors and dancing students - the University of Lincoln’s city centre campus has been reimagined in a new and unique video game.

University on Lincoln Island features a fictional pirate island, but with familiar buildings, landmarks and people for visitors to meet.

The game is the brainchild of Dr Chris Headleand, Director of Teaching and Learning at the School of Computer Science.

What started off as a personal project while on paternity leave is now ready for public launch.

Dr Headleand has reimagined the campus to give gamers and new visitors an immersive experience with all the university buildings exactly to scale and in the correct locations, but everything has a fantasy pirate twist. Gamers travel around the island, meeting people and completing quests.

Dr Headleand hopes the game will help current and prospective students to visit and learn about the University of Lincoln from the comfort of their living rooms.

He said: ““At the moment, we are all having to self-isolate and stay at home, but for many of us the Brayford Campus feels like a part of our home and we miss being there. Many prospective students will also have hoped to visit the campus before coming here for their studies, but with the current government advice they are unable to do that.

“Through this game they can at least take a tour, get a sense of where everything is, and meet some of the people they’ll be learning from and alongside.”

The game features more than 100 non-player characters (NPCs) based on real-life University of Lincoln staff and students. From students and support staff to professors and Deputy Vice Chancellors to give useful advice, deliver study tips, and provide information about themselves, the campus and the city of Lincoln, all based on their own personal opinions and experiences.

“60 of our current Lincoln students have created their own NPC who will tell you about their experiences as a student here,” Dr Headleand added.

“I hope that by engaging with this game, students could feel less anxious about moving to Lincoln and joining our community.”

Girls run away charity success

Law firm’s senior partner retires ANDREW Payne (pictured) has retired as Senior Partner of Sills & Betteridge LLP and is succeed by Stephen Wilson.

Originally from Lincoln returned to the city in 1976 upon graduation from Leeds University and the Guildford College of Law. He completed his articles with another local firm, joining Sills & Betteridge in 1978, then a small practice on Silver Street with ten staff.

Andrew became a partner in 1979 and on the retirement of Roger Wallis in 2006 he took the role of Senior Partner. The firm is now a regional practice with 15 offices in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Northamptonshire and a staff of over 300 people. Andrew will continue to act as a consultant.

“My career with Sills & Betteridge, spanning over 42 years, has been both incredibly interesting and rewarding. I am very proud to have been part of the firm’s growth and to have led the firm as Senior Partner for the last 14 years.

SISTERS Rosalind and Emmeline Tunstall have raised almost £700 by running 35km during Mental Health Awareness Week.

Rosalind (aged 6) and Emmeline (aged 4) ran alongside their parents, Jaime and Claire, in aid of local mental health services for children and young people by running 5k a day for seven days in May. Jaime said: “Mental health is very close to our hearts, and when we heard that Mental Health Awareness Week was coming up, we all decided we would like to fundraise locally.

“Both myself and Claire have been furloughed and we’re trying our best with home schooling and creating routines, but it is tough. Lockdown has been a hard challenge for everyone; our girls are desperate to go to school and see their friends.”

The £677 raised will go Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s (LPFT) charity. The money will be donated through the Trust’s charity, which enhances services and facilities not otherwise funded by the NHS.

Remember the nuture of nature WoRds and PictuRe: RacHeL sHaW, LincoLnsHiRe WiLdLife tRust THE nearest green space to me is the epitome of the everyday.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little bit scrappy and overgrown; a short cut to somewhere else, not a place that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d make a special trip to visit.

But in the absence of being able to visit special places, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve paid more attention. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve slowed down, observed and noticed more.

On my first morning working from home, instead of my morning drive, I walked there. In late March, the ground was muddy and slippery. I remember feeling that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d made a mistake to attempt the downhill path in such conditions. I was sure I was going to fall. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t and I kept returning.

As the sun came out and the mud dried, this became the place where I watched spring unfurl.

It was here where I heard my first chiffchaff of 2020, calling out a strident â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;chiff-chaffchiff-chaff â&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where I saw my first bat of the year flit between the trees. Where I nettle-stung my knee photographing a lone cuckooflower and watched a bee with ragged wings feed on the nectar of the green alkanet.

As the weeks went by I watched the tight buds of hawthorn open and release their scent of spring.

Tentatively at first, then they bloomed and the trees turned white like billowing clouds. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the place where the unremarkable became remarkable.

These fragments of wild in the urban landscape are easy to dismiss but my physical and mental health has benefitted from free access to this natural health service. I know Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not the only one that has benefitted. At the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust we have received more messages than ever from people noticing and enjoying the wildlife around them.

As lockdown eases, I hope we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget these experiences and interactions with our nearby nature. Nature shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t only exist in places that we get in the car to go and visit. There should be, not just green spaces, but nature-rich wild places near where we live so that everyone, everywhere, can enjoy nature on the doorstep.

Beth creates a bus buzz THERE’S a cheery new look to Lincoln Area DialaRide’s buses thanks to the artistic talents of one of its volunteers.

The charity bought some new vehicles, but had to wait for Covid-19 restrictions to be lifted before it could have new logos applied.

“This was an ideal opportunity to redesign the livery,” said deputy manager Penny Hardman.

“DialaRide has been serving the community for over 30 years and feels very strongly about sourcing things from the local area and supporting local talent.

“The new buses were purchased from Marks Transport, the logos were applied by Allen Signs and the livery was redesigned by Bethan Liente (pictured) a local tattoo artist and graphic designer.”

Bethan, who operates at the Iron and Pin Tattoo studio, is well-known for her striking tattoos, but is also a regular volunteer for Lincoln Area DialaRide.

“This latest design overhaul is her latest contribution.The clean, clear and modern livery is in keeping with the more modern office space at Lincoln Central Car Park that we moved into in January.”

Lincoln Area DialaRide currently has a limited service as many of its volunteers are self-isolating, but registered users with appointments can call, leave their name and phone number and the charity will get back and see what can be arranged.

TESCO is to open a new convenience store on the ground floor of the One The Brayford development in Lincoln.

The supermarket chain has taken a ten year lease on the property – which is just situated on the north side of the Brayford, underneath the residential development and neighbouring the Double Tree Hilton.

News of Tesco's arrival is likely to be welcomed by the University of Lincoln and all local residents, it's situated by the centre of the campus which services 15,000 students, said Dominik Jackson from J&J Developments (above left).

The opening of the new store will create multiple jobs in the centre of our city with local contractors managing the fit-out.”

Recovery will stem from key skills OVER the last couple of months, the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of STEM-related practical skills, in all their forms (science, technology, engineering and maths).

The pandemic has propelled scientists into the spotlight as they expertly guide the government in formulating policy.

Technology, as used in Zoom calls and Google Classroom, has enabled business life and education to continue during lockdown.

Engineers from all over the country have used their ingenuity to repurpose equipment to meet NHS PPE requirements, and the mathematical modelling of the all-important ‘R number’ has been key to devising a safe path back to a ‘new normal’ way of living.

STEM practitioners in all four areas have kept our country going and are a perfect example of how a specialist education in science, technology, engineering and maths can lead to incredible things.

Gillian Keegan MP, Minister for Skills, says that University Technical Colleges will be at the centre of building these skills following Covid-19: “UTCs are well positioned to support the skills needs of local economies, placing employers at the heart of designing their specialist curriculum in STEM subjects such as

engineering and digital technologies.

There are over 500 employers involved across 48 UTCs, including JCB, Network Rail, Toyota, Siemens and the Royal Navy, helping to create 30,000 opportunities for young people to train as the engineers, technicians and scientists of the future.

Summer Beers with Ferry Ales Brewery

GIVEN the current run of beautiful weather people are often looking for a cold crisp beer, writes John Cussons, managing director of Ferry Ales Brewery.

I thought I’d use two of our most popular summer beers to explain what makes a good lager such a refreshing drink.

What makes lager different from ale? There are some differences in the way we brew them, don’t worry I won’t bore you, like yeast and fermentation temperature but the single biggest difference is that to make a proper lager you need to “lay the beer down” and store it cold or lager it.

This cold storage for weeks or even months provides a very crisp clean taste which is why it is so refreshing.

Our Lincoln Lager is a pilsner style lager and is made in the proper way including conditioning it cold (around 2 degrees) for three weeks before bottling. But to show that you don’t have to go for a lager to get that crisp taste our Golden Fleece (which is an ale) is a Kolsch style ale. This means its brewed like an ale but then stored cold just like a lager and so again you get the crisp clean taste which we all love on a hot summers day.

Schools help feed the vulnerable

By Prof nigel curry, co-chair, Lincoln food Partnerhip WITH necessary isolation access to food is a critical issue in the Coronavirus pandemic.

Schools and children’s groups are making a real difference to feeding the vulnerable in the County.

At Washingborough Academy with only a few children to feed at school instead of standing down the kitchens hot meals are being delivered to all children normally receiving free school meals.

It doesn’t stop there: all people in the community over 70 are now offered the same service. Demand grew nearly threefold in the first week.

Delivery is by volunteers, left on the doorstep between 12.15pm and 1pm to ensure the meals stay hot. One elderly recipient had not seen anyone for two weeks and gave thanks through her window.

Another 87-year-old had been to the school himself in 1937 and said the school action made him proud.

St George’s C of E Community Primary School in Gainsborough (pictured) has designed a ‘Grab n Go’ food station at the school gates, feeding both the school and the local community.

In Wragby, Children Eat Free (ChEF) volunteers normally feed any child in the community in the school holidays. They have now expanded their weekly 90 lunch holiday delivery into an ‘until further notice’ community meals on wheels’ service.

Distributing more than 200 meals to rising numbers of vulnerable and self-isolating adult residents, as well as children, volunteers deliver homemade hot meals to the doorstep. Much of this food is supplied by local people, organisations and businesses.

The Lincoln Food Partnership is committed to doing as much as it can to make sure that everyone in the community is properly fed, particularly when the pandemic is over, where the needs remain.

Partners provide food through adversity for over 65s HOME cooked meals are being provided for the over 65s in Lincoln and South Lincolnshire through a partnership between Salted Orange Food Co and Age UK Lincoln & South Lincolnshire.

The charity and catering company launched the Food Through Adversity programme when it became clear amid early lockdown stockpiling that service users would struggle to buy supplied.

The partners provide 21 nutritious meals for £20 with a 12-week menu available.

“As many older, vulnerable people struggle to buy supplies due to stockpiling and Coronavirus, we vow to tackle the issue head on with help from their project partner, Salted Orange Food Company and an army 20

of volunteer community heroes,” said charity spokesman Melanie Meik “The weekly deliveries available for up to 12 weeks ensure that those who need it have access to three meals a day, seven days a week without the worry and stress and often logistical challenges of supermarket shopping.”

Lincs Show will go on...online ORGANISERS of the Lincolnshire Show have announced this year’s event will be hosted online and feature the usual attractions and exhibitors on a virtual platform.

Taking place on June 24, the same date the event was originally planned for, the Lincolnshire Show Online will include educational and agricultural content, cookery demonstrations, entertainment, online shopping, exciting exhibitors and much more.

The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society made the difficult decision to cancel the traditional show earlier this year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but now promises to make the 136th show go ahead in a way that the Lincolnshire Showground has never done before.

Jayne Southall, CEO of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society at the Showground, said: “Although we were absolutely devastated to cancel the traditional Show this year, we are so excited to launch the Lincolnshire Show Online and venture into the virtual world, a first for the Lincolnshire Show. We have been busy behind the scenes planning for a while now, and we can’t wait to reveal more over the coming weeks.”

The annual show has been running for 135 years and welcomes more than 60,000 visitors, 6,000 students and 600 trade stands each year and has only had to cancel a handful of times in the Lincolnshire

Agricultural Society’s 150 year history – during both World Wars and the more recent foot and mouth outbreak in 2001.

Help for male victims of domestic abuse

nicHoLa sKayMan, Head of doMestic aBuse, RingRose LaW THE overwhelming perception of a domestic abuse victim in the UK is a woman.

However, Ringrose Law also assist male victims of domestic abuse each week. It is important to acknowledge that domestic abuse does happen to both male and female victims.

ManKind Initiative is a charity that helps men escape domestic abuse.Statistics reported from the charity show that in 2018/19, 576,000 men (2.5% men) and 1.2 million (4.8% women) were victims of partner abuse in 2018/19 equating to a ratio of two female victims to every one male victim.

Statistics also showed that in 2018/19 – 16 men (80 women) were killed at the hands of their current or ex-partner.

These are shocking and somewhat surprising statistics.

A stigma Men often feel that there is a stigma attached to speaking out against a violent partner and feel weak. In 2017/18, they were nearly three times less likely to tell anyone than a female victim (49% of men fail to tell anyone as opposed to 19% women).

It is important for any victim of domestic abuse to remember that abusive behaviour in whatever form should not be tolerated and constitutes a criminal offence.

Domestic Abuse and CoviD-19 Calls to a national domestic abuse helpline rose by 49% and killings doubled weeks after lockdown.

We want to make victims aware that our services are still available to provide support where possible and in turn we will be available to assist with necessary applications.

Liz Lucas - gardener for all seasons DURING the lockdown many of us spent time in our gardens and I am sure we are all thankful that we have one to spend time in.

How sad I feel for those people without access to an outdoor space. I think if the lockdown has done anything positive it has given many of us time to appreciate nature.

I have had some wonderful birds visiting my feeding station. Two suave doves have become fairly tame and sit and wait for me to get the seeds out. Blue tits are nesting in the box on the side of the shed and we had a black cap eating from the seed tray one day!

I have noticed so many insects. Have there always been this many? Hover flies are madly eating up the aphids, bees are visiting every single flower that is open and butterflies are definitely more prevalent. I have left a few dandelions to flower and have planted up an area of wildflowers to help the insects along.

I had a grubby little lawn, beneath the rotary washing line. It did badly, full of weed and the soil seemed poor. Beside it, we decided to make a raised vegetable bed, so I dug up the lawn and used the turves upside down in the bottom of the raised bed because it takes a huge amount of soil.

This left the ex lawn rather soil depleted and into this I sowed a packet of wild meadow seeds. I’ve never been successful with this before so I did not have particularly high hopes. Usually, just throwing wild flower seeds onto soil results in either nothing or very little in the way of meadow.

However, the seeds are coming. I sowed in rows so that I could differentiate between the wild flowers and weeds and now (almost May, as I am writing this) there are little rows of green shoots coming up. I am delighted.

Some of the ground will have to be made over to vegetables as I have too many, but they will, hopefully be surrounded by wild plants, attracting lots of pollinating insects.

I well recall the moment when our first black and white TV set arrived in our own home on Ruskin Avenue in about 1955, and the joy of being able to watch programmes such as Robin Hood in our own â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;front roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, starring Richard Greene as the immaculately dressed clean-cut outlaw.

We had previously been entertained by listening to programmes such as Dick Barton Special Agent, Life with the Lyons, Hancockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Half Hour, Take it from Here, Journey into Space and other programmes on the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;wirelessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Our neighbour Mrs Jackson, who lived close by on Cottingham Drive, was one of the first in our neighbourhood to own a small set, and we were lucky enough to be invited to her house to watch The Coronation and the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Matthewsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cup Final in 1953.

Lincoln School acquired its first â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;goggle box in September.. The moment was captured in the March 1960 edition of The Lincolnian in the section â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;From the Headmasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Headmaster Patrick Martin (pictured above showing new boys around the School) appeared to have a relatively open mind about the new gadget: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Television is, in itself, neither good nor bad, it is the use made of it by human beings which decides,â&#x20AC;? he wrote.

Perhaps the same might be said of the more contemporary technological innovations such as the Internet and the social media.

During school hours the set was available to any Master who decided that the programmes for

schools would be of use. Mr Martin had no doubt that television would remain an important influence on peoplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives. In admitting that he had owned a set for eight years, Mr Martin confessed that he watched it for an average of four hours a week, and pronounced that was certainly enough for the boys too.

The Headmaster found BBC programmes in social science and geography were particularly helpful as teaching aids, and he had no doubt that, in time, programmes would rival the high standards reached by the sound broadcasts to schools.

Senior boys should be encouraged to watch programmes such as Panorama and The Brains Trust; Facts and Figures and Press Conference.

Mr Martin also admitted that, occasionally, a great play or novel was produced on television in a stimulating manner.

However, he thought that for schoolboys in particular it would be far more beneficial to read the novel and, if possible, to see the play performed in a theatre. He was less enthusiastic about the value of television as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;of purely entertainment valueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Mr Martin ended his homily on a more cautiously positive note. He admitted that growing boys should not be deterred from opening the windows offered by the best programmes. However they should also learn which windows were grimy and smeared, opening onto a view which was not worth seeing.

Venues limit impact of lockdown limbo NEW guidelines on easing the coronavirus restrictions will not bring comfort to arts and culture venues - or their audiences.

Designated as higher risk businesses under Step Three of the government’s plan it will be July 4 before reopening is even considered. Sites will then either have to hold events behind closed doors or pass the stringent tests to be declared Covid-19 Secure, which would have a huge impact on takings and financial viability.

Lincoln’s arts venues have been active in filling the cultural gap and planning for reopening, but need the public’s support for online events and to find out what audiences want after lockdown.

Name the comedian who might say ‘I wonder if I can set up a comedy club… in a refugee camp… in Palestine?’

Of course, it’s Mark Thomas( above centre), who tells this story with Faisal Abu Alhayjaa and Alaa Shehada, two performers, actors and now aspiring comics from the Jenin Club.

It has also commissioned a series of short works, Lincolnshire In Lockdown, which can be seen on its website.

The Blue Room is also encouraging new work with its Monologue Fest 2020 - an invite to everyone to submit an original fiveminute soliloquy.

“They can be about lock-down, they can be about the end of lock-down, they can be about something near and dear to your heart.

They can be about anything. Be creative.

Have a go,” urged Artistic Director Stephen Gillard.

Lincoln Performing Arts Centre has continued to produce its Creative Lockdown Newsletter packed full of activities for all ages and including Lil’ PACs online andArtistic Director Craig Morrow’s pick of the online culture offerings coming up.

“The sheer number of productions that have been sat upon in various companies' archives is astonishing, although clearly some of the recordings were never intended to be viewed by the public but the pandemic has made organisations reconsider these assets.,” said Craig, “One thing is for sure, artists are getting better at thinking about how events might be filmed or re-worked for online consumption and we can expect an increase in work especially made for the medium - not quite theatre, not quite film but something special nonetheless. Certainly, we've started to commission work for later in the year so we'll keep you informed as these new artforms become available.”

LPAC’s website also features a national survey, which Craig and his team are urging people to complete so that venues can plan for the future when doors reopen.

“We have no past experience to draw upon for a situation like this – so we really need to hear your thoughts on the current situation and how you feel about attending events again at some point.”

students bring audience and artists together virtually THE Space Between Us is a new virtual gallery to display the work of students from the University of Lincoln’s Fine Art BA course.

Due to COVID-19 the exhibition featuring 35 artists has been moved online, creating a new website https://thespacebetweenusart.wixsite.com/degreeshow.

“The aims of this exhibition are to celebrate the achievements of third year Fine Art students as they present their developed professional practice to a wider audience,” explained artist and marketing team member Eleanor Ball, “Using the exhibition as a springboard for the graduates’ careers, the show reaches out to a variety of industries to display the wide range of creativity these artists can bring to their future careers.

“Of course, accomplishing these aims with our artists self-isolating across the country presented a new set of challenges that were not foreseen. One of our main challenges was to limit the space between the artists and their audience, providing connectivity to the artwork and a relationship with the public.”

The artists worked with degree show programme leaders, Dr Steve Fossey and Dr Steve Klee, to overcome the connectivity issue and produced the impressive online exhibition working from their own homes.

“Early on in planning we noted that the circumstances that limited a physical degree show taking place was also our unique selling point. We used this physical space between us as a space to celebrate our unity despite the circumstance,” said Eleanor.

Innovations included Artist Takeover Days hosted on the exhibition’s Instagram page (@thespacebetweenus2020) showing participants using their new domestic space to create ambitious exhibition work.

Eleanor and fellow artist and marketing team member Emma Brice hosted Access Days after the exhibition launched providing a live tour of the exhibition and inviting audience discussions of the work.

“These and other marketing events provided a space for the artists and the audience to connect virtually and increase their understanding of how the works have been created under lockdown. As a result of highlighting these aspects of creating work, our social media following was highly successful and resulted support from a variety of other media outlets..

“While many of us in lockdown crave outdoor excitement and contact, its curating digitally ambitious solutions like this exhibition that makes the in-door home space just as exciting and inclusive. “ The exhibition is curated into a variety of thematic rooms and Eleanor believes creating the online degree show has given all the artists extra tools to take their work forward.

“This exhibition reached over 300 people on its opening night, which is far more than would have fitted into our university gallery space. With artist profiles, social media links and contact information the exhibition has opened its doors to the public, inviting discussion on the artworks and curation for this ongoing online event.”

Wealth of talent DISCOVER the wealth of creative talent the county has to offer through Virtual Connections 2020.

Due to be staged at the Usher Gallery the Lincolnshire Artists’ Society show has moved online and features work by more than 70 members.

Inviting viewers to peruse the site LAS chairman Phil Bowman said: “It has been said too many times these last few weeks that we are living in ‘extraordinary times’. But we as artists are blessed with gifts and skills that allow us to travel to distant lands and create unseen worlds without even leaving our own homes. I hope the powers that be will reflect on how important a part the arts have played in combating the seclusion forced on us by this pandemic. Not just within this happy band of creatives, but in communities throughout the UK and beyond.”

Wild at art RACHEL Rogers’ earliest memories are of creating her own illustrations to accompany her favourite stories.

She is a member of the Lincolnshire Artists’ Society with work featured in its current online exhibition – see opposite page.

“I love to paint the wildest, most romantic places I can find, capturing nature at it’s most beautiful and dramatic. Whether it’s the roaring waves and towering cliffs of the Southwest coastline, and it’s crowded, jewel coloured rock pools, or the diverse, sometimes overlooked, scenery around the Wash, fenlands, and the Lincolnshire Wolds.”

Rachel gained a 2:1 (Hons) degree in Illustration from the University of Wales in the early 1990s, but took a few years away from art.

“My love affair with art was rekindled and I haven’t put down my paintbrush since,” said Rachel, whose creativity has not been curbed by the coronavirus restrictions.

“Normally, I am lucky enough to be able to travel regularly to some of the most stunning parts of the UK with my trusty sketchbook, but during the lockdown I have been making the most of the wonderful scenery closer to home, and have recently begun a series of paintings of the Bluestone Heath Road.

“This is a prehistoric route which runs through some of the prettiest parts of the Lincolnshire Wolds. It has always fascinated me - it is incredibly atmospheric and a really rich source of inspiration for me at the moment, and as I live near Horncastle, luckily for me, it’s right on my doorstep.

“My work is semi abstract, I have no interest in capturing details, but more the feel of a place and what excites me about it.

Sometimes inspiration can come from something quite mundane. I jot things down quickly in my sketchbook, then when I return home, I create my finished pieces from a mixture of memory, sketches, and a little imagination.

“Colour plays a huge part in my work, I love building up different layers, then scraping back through to reveal the layers beneath. I use a mixture of different media, including watercolour, gouache, inks, pastels, charcoal, and anything else that might be needed to bring a painting to life.”

Strongman on the pull to help LINCOLN strongman Dave Johnson will pull a 27-tonne lorry 25 metres in aid of suicide prevention charity the Bearded Fishermen.

The feat will mark a decade of challenges that Dave has completed in aid of different charities.

On Saturday, July 25, Dave will be pulling the Flying Hire truck 25 metres from one of the company’s compounds in North Scarle and will be joined by Ashton Reid from Gainsborough who is a World’s Strongest Man competitor – he will also be taking on the challenge separately.

In line with the latest Government guidance the public will not be allowed to attend the event, but the challenge will be live streamed on Facebook.

Dave first began participating in strongman challenges in 2010 in memory of his friend Mark Browne, who passed away in 2012 after a battle with cancer. Since then he has taken on a new challenge each year involving car deadlifts and bus and lorry pulls.

“A friend of mine knows the Bearded Fishermen and he has found their services to be vital. When I heard them on the radio appealing for funds during the crisis, it got me thinking about how I could help,” said Dave.

“During the crisis, and even before it, I feel that mental health hasn’t been highlighted as much as it should have been and the work that the Bearded Fishermen do to support people who suffer from mental health problems is so important.

Get the HappyApp A NEW app will be released this month to help people with mental health issues.

Lincoln’s early intervention hub Timeout Wellness Centre has recently secured additional funding from the Big Lottery fund to adapt to Covid-19 Timeout is a lottery funded project sponsored by Le Sanctuaire Spa Ltd whose owner Karen Cook is an advocate of using holistic therapies such as massage, meditation, yoga and reflexology to boost mental wellbeing.

Timeout-Creative Minds – been a successful outreach project since 2018, which have been developed to be accessible especially to vulnerable and sheltered people.

“We are now offering the ‘HappyApp’ – this will be available for our service users to download. Timeout is now working with specialists to offer a range of various creative ideas and gives people the opportunity to discuss and link with others to enable people to still feel part of the community,” said Karen.

Life lessons learned in lockdown

By MeL HoLLiday - nLP PRactitioneR I FEEL like I have been in a time warp over the past few months.

Initially the first few weeks were busy. I still had things to do in the office, getting my head around the process looking after the team, the clients and suppliers as the lockdown happened so quickly.

A routine felt sensible, keeping the hours of getting up and working as usual.

However the weather being glorious meant the routine began to slip and the sunny garden beckoned. As there was less to do in the office daily, I started finding jobs both in and outside to fill the day.

Every morning started as a relatively normal day in the office, but by late morning I found myself thinking about the outdoors and wanting to be out.

I also began to notice the days felt less frantic. Some days I didn’t notice what time it was, I suddenly realised I was hungry and had missed lunch in my new found ventures. We as a family, were in isolation as we had a keyworker waiting to go back to work. Leaving the house was not an option. I was thankful I had a garden.

When going into schools to teach young people how to manage their stress, I include the practice of being outside and “being in the present”.

It is something many of us including children find difficult to do. To absorb yourself in the moment and focus on what is happening around you has become harder with technology and distractions.

In school we practice in a quiet space, preferably outside (or indoors with a window open if the weather is not good) looking around and noticing what we can see, focusing on something we have not noticed before. Concentrating on the things we can hear. What can we smell? We then sit or lie and close our eyes, then turn our focus to the sense of what we can hear, smell, can we feel the wind on our face?

Do we notice a difference with eyes closed to open? These are all techniques 36

incorporated into the module.

As weeks go by, I am questioning whether I do this enough? I realise how the change in routine allows me to enjoy the space I have. The birdsong seems louder as there is no traffic. I notice new species of bird and insect I haven’t spotted before in the garden. I am finding I am becoming more “in the present”, practicing what I have preached.

I am enjoying not clock watching so much. Noticing nature, as spring is now moving into summer. The air is so clear, the sky is so blue. The flowers as they begin to bloom seem more vibrant. I am wondering, I am imagining this or is it that I am more aware of my senses? It has made me curious how quickly my habits

and behaviour has changed.

This has been a emotionally turbulent time for the world. There are so many uncertainties we have had to work through.

We have had to change our behaviour and habits to keep everyone around us safe. I am sure we have felt the anxiety levels increase, but many people have found daily walks or hours of exercise has calmed them.

We have recently ventured out into nearby fields with our dog Geoffrey who has really missed his long walks. The joy on his face as he bounded around lifted us and made us laugh. Noticing how green the space had become over the weeks from the wellied muddy experience in March, gave me heart that nature is moving us forward.

I am thankful I have had the opportunity to explore a change in pace in life, to notice nature and its positive healing. Its vibrancy, sound and smell. Like my vegetables that I am slowly nurturing, I will have to be patient and adapt to my new normal, my care and attention to my plants will hopefully reward me with summer salad and vegetables.

As we begin to move out from lockdown holding onto my new found awareness may be difficult as the daily routine will be returning.

However, I need to be a role model moving forward and I know this insight will ensure I find a bit of time and space to be “in the present“ and not forget how Mother Nature gives me the support I need.

It is now emerging business behaviour during lockdown is likely to impact the road to recovery.

Business leaders were quick to respond to the introduction of lockdown and had a fairly universal approach to those early necessessities, but managing lockdown has been more wide ranging.

Actions taken by businesses to manage staff, support customers and deal with the challenges presented by Covid-19 are likely to affect more than the bottom line.

The majority of businesses have experienced a significant drop in turnover and for some there has been, hopefully only temporary, a loss of all revenue.

When looking to operate again one of the key challenges will be re-engaging with customers.

Herein lies the rub and the big question...do customers want to re-engage with you?

Have they gone or are thinking of going elsewhere?

How you have managed customer relationships and communication with them will have a significant impact on how they re-engage post lockdown.

Businesses that have endeavoured to keep in touch will fare better than those that haven’t. This might be thought of as your reputation value. Out of sight is out of mind with customers feeling less connected and at risk of seeking alternative providers and supply.

It might not have been easy to continue to trade, but those that have are better placed for retaining customers, even gaining new ones.

Innovations from restaurants offering takeaways and garden centres offering home deliveries through to developing an ecommerce provision, more favourable payment terms or just providing advice and support have been well received by customers.

Perhaps the greatest positive impact on customers has been how businesses have responded to and contributed to the challenges faced by Covid-19.

Examples of this range from fundraising to help frontline workers and switching to making PPE to developing new digital or technology applications to help with the situation – these are all

being well received not just by business stakeholders but the also the wider community.

Survival invariably has and will depend on the availability of funding and being able to manage costs for what seems to be an indeterminable period of time.

For most, balancing the books has involved a mix of looking after the livelihoods of employees and as well as safeguarding the life of the business, a move which has certainly hit the bottom line.

This is recognised not just by employees but also customers alike, with those businesses earning more kudos and respect putting the situation over and above profit.

In a world that is so well connected companies could find how they have behaved scrutinised.

Social media coverage is hard to manage, with news and opinion spreading widely and quickly.

Perhaps one of the key influences has been how employers have treated and supported their employees.

Those that have gone the extra mile to support their staff seem to have weathered the storm better than those who have not.

Whether it is financial support, changes to working patterns, the provision of equipment to enable working from home, or just simply keeping in touch, all impact on the loyalty and resilience of your staff and also the viewpoints and perception of your customers.

There are more challenges ahead as we transition through lockdown to recovery.

Business leaders and their teams need to consider the wider implications of their actions on their business as they respond to the difficulties and opportunities presented by what is being described as the ‘new normal’.

OPERATION Galileo - Lincolnshire Police’s fight against hare coursing - has proved effective with the second lowest incident figures on record.

There were 1048 incidents of hare coursing reported to us across the county between September 2019 and March 2020.

For the same period during 2018 to 2019 we received 873 reports, 1365 reports for 2017 to 2018 and 1965 for 2016 to 2017.

Chief Inspector Phil Vickers, who leads rural crime for the force, said: “ The last 12 months have been challenging times for our farming and rural communities – economic uncertainty, flooding and feeding the nation under lock-down.

“During this time, offenders have sought to continue their activities in fields across Lincolnshire, with hare coursers travelling significant distances to trespass, cause damage and intimidate local people.

“Our approach under Operation Galileo last season was to focus on Prevention – stopping the offences from happening, making use of tactics that really impact on offenders.

“We have been able to seize dogs and have them forfeited at court – this continues to be the sanction that has greatest impact and makes Lincolnshire an unattractive place for offenders to visit. We are working with partners to secure a change in the law, that give Courts the powers they need to appropriately deal with hare coursing.

“A total of 1048 incidents, from September 2019 to March 2020, is the second lowest on record, but every incident is one too many and we will continue to adapt our working – the only acceptable level is zero.

“I’m hugely grateful for the support we have had from partners in the NFU, CLA and other local organisations – We have encouraged local communities to report suspicious behaviour at the earliest opportunity, and it is that information that has been key to us getting ahead of offenders.

“We have made use of technology – drones and farmers are routinely passing locations to our Control Room and giving the “What3 Words” location – that has helped us put our officers in the right place, and is a good example of us all changing our practices to prevent crime.

“Lincolnshire Police has led and coordinated the Top 12 Hare Coursing forces across the country with Op Galileo – we have shown that we can achieve more, and we are looking forward to doing even more in 2020/21.
