Imps could still lead city’s summer celebrations Continued from page 1.

“We don’t want people to feel that there’s going to be nothing a very little happening in Lincoln this summer.

“We have to heed Government advice and follow the restrictions, but I’m willing to take it right to the wire before we have to cancel anything else.”

The Lincoln Imp Trail designed to get residents and visitors walking all over the city is still scheduled to be launched on July 4, albeit in a reduced format as the mini versions in schools could not be finished due to closures.

“With the Imp Trail I’ve decided Lincoln is going to have two bites of the cherry. We’re going to postpone the full trail until next year, but we are going to give people a flavour.

“The large statues have been completed by the artists and they’re really fabulous, so let’s get them out there.”

There’s also still time for the public to design their own Imp if they visit

“We’ve organised free of charge for levy payers to give them a few ideas on how to improve their situations now and after lockdown.”

I OWE Dave Gladwin of Gedlers £100.

That’s not strictly true - I have the money in my keeping and my mentioning it is not just to assure him publicly that I haven’t forgotten, but also to illustrate how genuinely some people react to a good cause.

I saw Dave in The Strugglers and mentioned our Art Matters campaign (on hold, but not forgotten) running to introduce live theatre, dance, comedy, music and any other art form to people who would not usually engage with it.

This magazine intends to pay to make such an introduction possible by buying tickets, transport or any other way we could usefully contribute.

Dave gave me £100 for the campaign there and then no strings attached, I was blown away by his generosity.

The recipients of his largesse have been chosen, but obviously getting them to any venue is not possible right now.

Watch this space...we can tell you they are volunteers for a local charity who have had a rough time this year.

We’ve seen many fabulous reactions to perturbing circumstances we’re all in and we’re proud to cover many of those efforts in the following pages.

You’d know there’s a ‘however’ on its way even if the headline did not give it away.

From irresponsible drivers who are making the quieter roads their own private race tracks to the con artists taking advantage of people’s fears and the fact vulnerablity has increased due to social distancing there are some absolute b.....ds out there.

My husband intervened when an elderly man with a walking stick was verbally abused by a youth on a bike near Newport Arch.

A new threat about the old gent getting Covid-19 had been added to the abuse arsenal along with all the swearing.

I have to add corporate cynicism to despicable list.

We were approached by an organisation we don’t usually deal with that was planning to do something to raise funds for the NHS. They asked if we would be interested in covering the event.

We gave our usual response... we would if we could but we always give priority to supporting the people who support us.

The attitude changed and I was told the event would not go ahead if we did not give it publicity. No great loss I thought, but it did make me sad.

What stopped me being quite so despondent about the incident was thinking about Dave Gladwin.

CHOIR IN FINE VOICE FOR NHS LINCOLN Cathedral Choir has recorded a video of Somewhere over the Rainbow in tribute to the NHS, carers and frontline staff serving the country.

THEATRE AWARD WINNER THE winner of the 2020 Lincoln Civic Award is the New Theatre Royal.

Custodians Natalie and Mike Hayes-Cowley said they were thrilled with the Trustees’ choice especially as the theatre has had to close its doors during the crisis.

The presentation of the award, at The Guildhall on April 20 was postponed, but will be rearranged in the near future.

student nurses join frontline battle NEARLY 100 student nurses are joining the frontline NHS Lincolnshire teams to help fight back against the coronavirus pandemic.

The final year student nurses from the University of Lincoln joined all three Lincolnshire healthcare providers at the end of April. They will play important roles in supporting acute hospitals, community services, and mental health and learning disability services. This cohort of nurses will boost the Lincolnshire workforce, following a national call for nurses in-training to step up and serve in the fight against coronavirus.

Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) is expecting to have 17 student nurses. Two student nurses will work on community hospital wards, two in urgent treatment centres and the remaining students will be spread across the county in the community teams.

Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) will benefit from 20 student nurses, working countywide in both

inpatient and community-based mental health and learning disability services.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) workforce will be strengthened by a team of nearly 60 student nurses, who will join its frontline staff to work in Lincoln County Hospital, Boston Pilgrim Hospital and Grantham Hospital.

Anita Lewin, Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals and Quality, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are enormously grateful to the students who are joining Lincolnshire NHS as it faces an unprecedented challenge. It is by no means an easy way to start their career.

“Students will be working alongside our dedicated staff in Lincolnshire hospitals, community, mental health and learning disability services, putting their muchneeded skills into practice to support us in keeping our services going throughout the pandemic. They will combine their final stages of nursing training with paid NHS roles, and we are indebted to colleagues at

the University of Lincoln for their support in helping us to achieve this.

“On behalf of all Lincolnshire healthcare providers, I want to say thank you to the new generation of NHS staff who are stepping up to help us at this challenging time”.

Dr Kate Grafton, Head of School of Health & Social Care at the university, added: “We’re incredibly proud of our nursing students who are supporting the NHS workforce in our region in the fight against coronavirus.

UTC student Jonty Horn delivers his homemade face shields to St Barnabas Hospice.

UTC engineers solutions for NHS LINOLN UTC encourages students to apply their learning to real life contexts and experiences.

By looking at the bigger picture, 16-year-old Jonty Horn has used his knowledge to respond to the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for frontline NHS staff by using 3D printing to manufacture face shields in his own home.

Jonty has studied a STEM based curriculum of GCSEs at the UTC for the past two years, and the current nationwide shortage of PPE prompted the Year 11 student to put his engineering skills into practise by finding a solution to the problem. Over the past month he has donated hundreds of face shields to various local health organisations free of charge.

In the current Covid-19 crisis, engineers are saving lives every single day. Innovation is the bread and butter of an engineer and by coming up with new ideas and finding better ways to operate, engineers at all levels are contributing to the fight against the virus.

The Head of Engineering at Lincoln UTC, Miles Fielding, has also been collaborating with engineering staff from other local secondary schools to produce valves for CPAP devices used to treat Covid-19 patients at Lincoln County Hospital.

Experts have worked out that CPAP (sleep apnoea treatment) devices can be used for oxygen therapy on non-critical Covid19 patients, preventing the need for an invasive ventilator.

Patients have been shown to make a remarkable turnaround and full recovery as a result of this treatment.

Mr Fielding responded to requests from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and has been using 3D printing equipment from the UTC to print small batches of valves that allow the oxygen supply to enter the circuit of the CPAP device.

WIN A COPY OF NEW BOOK WALKING around Lincoln’s cobbled streets is a pleasure many city residents are having to forego, but a new book should prove to be a lockdown tonic.

“It is no understatement to say that Lincoln’s story is told in its buildings.

This is at its most obvious in the cathedral quarter, where the city’s Norman Castle and medieval Bishop’s Palace jostle for space alongside historic hostelries,” explained Daniel.

“Looming over everything is the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral.

This part of Lincoln is approached by way of the famous Steep Hill, which is lined with houses that date back to the medieval era, like the Jews House.

“However, beyond this area, the city features many other buildings from almost every era throughout history, with Roman remains, ruins of a mediaeval monastery, Tudor, Stuart and Georgian houses, and many fascinating buildings from the Victorian age and the 20th century up to the present day, including Lincoln’s infamous Victorian prison and the Theatre Royal that has entertained the people of Lincoln for over 200 years.

“Each has its own story, and many have a hidden history behind the façade.”

Daniel describes himself as a lifelong student of history, criminology, folklore, the out-of-place and the paranormal in Britain, He has previously written full studies of the supernatural and paranormal in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Somerset and Bristol.

“I was born in Lincoln, although I live in Skellingthorpe. I work for local government in the city and walk past the castle and cathedral virtually every day. I’m also doing another book for Amberley, Paranormal Lincolnshire, which explores the city’s folklore and ghost stories etc. I’m also a Freeman of the City of Lincoln.”

scammers still active in crisis FRAUDSTERS are taking advantage of the response to coronavirus by duping the public into handing over personal information including financial details.

Matt Drury, Principal Investigator from the Lincolnshire County Council’s counter fraud team warned: “We know that scammers have tailored their activity in light of the coronavirus outbreak and are playing on people’s fears and financial concerns. We are seeing more ‘phishing attacks’ where bank account details or sign-in information is stolen.

“This is carried out through encouraging the recipient to visit fake websites promising tax refunds and even a recent attempt encouraging parents to claim refunds for school meal payments. We’re now seeing scams where people are being told they have been fined for leaving the house. This is designed to obtain personal or financial details.”

Lincolnshire’s Trading Standards team is also warning about people offering miracle cures or vaccines for coronavirus – these do not exist.

Bogus healthcare workers are claiming to be offering ‘home-testing’ for coronavirus – these kits are not currently available to buy.

Cllr Alex Maughan, the council’s Counter-Fraud Champion said: “Please be extra vigilant when you see claims about coronavirus, or if you see others sharing information which may be false. The best way to check is with the official government and council advice.”

Trading Standards is also urging careful use of social media, after one Lincoln woman was nearly drawn into a scam.

Paula was contacted by one of her friends on Facebook messenger asking her to take payment for something because they did not have PayPal. The friend’s account had been hacked and the request a con trick: “The money dropped into my PayPal account and then the mood of her messages altered. I just sensed something wasn’t right when she started demanding that I transferred the money straight away,” said Paula, who reported the incident.

Remembering Rob smith

BY LIz LuCAs ROB Smith, well-known Lincoln musician actor and hypnotherapist, sadly passed away on March 1, 2020, after four years of living with cancer. He was 61.

Rob began his long career as a musician in 1978 with The Cigarettes. His strong song writing abilities and his innate musical sense saw the band go from strength to strength, culminating in a session for John Peel, on the radio. They released a single entitled ‘Can’t Sleep At Night’ and an EP. This was hugely influential for many young, would-be musicians in Lincoln. Hardly any bands from the city had made it this far. We were all gunning for them and very proud that they were putting Lincoln on the musical map.

The Cigarettes built up an almost mythical status amongst the young musical generation in the city and still have a strong following forty years later (an early incarnation of the band is pictured right with Rob far right).

Rob continued to write and perform, latterly with his lovely wife, Jane, and released an album of quite stunningly lyrical and poignant songs just over a year ago.

Never one to stand still, Rob went on to study massage and acupressure, working from home and healing hundreds of people throughout the city with poorly backs, necks and shoulders. He had a terrific understanding of the working of the body and sorted me out more than once. Latterly he went into hypnotherapy and psychotherapy with equal success.

In the early 90s Rob joined The Lincoln Shakespeare Company for their summer show of Romeo and Juliet, playing Romeo’s father.

He went on to act and direct with the company until their demise, being a stickler for correct understanding of Shakespeare’s words and meanings. If we needed to know what we were talking about it was Rob we turned to.

His finest performance was Richard lll, but he also turned out some wonderful roles as Bolingbroke in Richard ll, Oberon, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Malvolio in Twelfth Night.

Using his experience, Rob wrote several small plays, getting people together to read and record them. He was a thoughtful writer with a strong sense of line and form. The sessions were always fun with much laughter and probably more wine than was necessary, but deeply enjoyable.

Rob was a good man, thoughtful for others, generous in his work, fantastic with technology and with a wisdom grown from a life of strong and sometimes quite wild living.

He lived his life to the absolute full, sharing it with Jane, his wife of 23 years and their son Max. He reformed The Cigarettes recently and played to a huge, sticky crowd at The Jolly Brewer. Everyone was there; Rob was not well but pulled out all the stops and gave a stellar performance.

We all miss him and he will be remembered in this city for many years to come.

Get the bug for garden wildlife WORds ANd PICtuRE: RAChEL shAW, LINCOLNshIRE WILdLIFE tRust A GLEAM of metallic blue catches my eye.

What looks like a small piece of shiny metal is perched on a geranium leaf in my garden.

I crouch down to get a closer look.

It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move but it is living. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a

shieldbug.

I reach for my phone and snap a few shots.

Shieldbugs are easy to photograph. They sometimes clamber about the leaves but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t scurry away when you get close. This one is a species that I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen before.

It looks exotic, almost too fancy to be a UK species. Unlike the more frequently seen leaf-coloured green shieldbug, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not trying to blend in with its surroundings.

With a small head and broad shoulders that taper to a shield-shaped body, shieldbugs look like beetles. But they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beetles, they are â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;true bugsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Bug is loose term for any creepie-crawlie but it also has a strict meaning for entomologists (those who study insects).

Their more formal name is Hemiptera.

From the Greek for half (hemi) and wing (pteron); when you look closely at a shieldbug you can see why. Half of the wing is hardened and coloured, but at the end of the body the other half of the wing can be seen. This is membranous like the wing of a fly.

Another distinguishing feature of true

bugs are their mouth parts.

They have a long structure like a sharpened straw that is folded underneath the body. When they feed, they unfold the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;strawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, pierce it into a stem or leaf and drink the sap.

Generally they are harmless sap-drinkers but this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always the case as I discovered with my metallic shieldbug.

Consulting the excellent britishbugs.org.uk website, I identified my new bug as a blue shieldbug. And heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not trying to be camouflaged as a leaf but as his prey. The blue shieldbug doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drink sap, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a predator. His favoured prey are leaf beetles that also have a metallic iridescence.

True blue photo fundraiser for NHS charities MONEY is being raised for an NHS mental health charity through the sale of canvas prints of Lincoln Cathedral bathed in blue in tribute to key workers during the COVID-19 response.

Andrew Scott, Information Governance Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT), is raising money for the organisation’s charity, which enhances services and facilities not funded by the NHS. The charity supports the funding and provision of equipment and services which make a difference to service user care of the

local mental health and learning disability trust.

“I wanted to help support the Trust during these difficult times, but couldn’t put myself forward to help on the front line as my wife and eldest daughter are vulnerable due to chronic asthma,” said Andrew.

“I decided the next best thing would be to raise funds to help frontline staff wherever possible. I teamed up with a friend, Karl Abbott from PinPoint Media in Lincoln, to create charity canvases we could sell and donate profits to NHS trusts.

“We started initially taking email orders, but the response was so great we had to set up a webpage to process them all. We’ve sold around 400 so far and donated over £2,000 to local NHS charities, and this figure is still on the rise.”

Philip Jackson, LPFT’s NonExecutive Director and Chair of the Trust’s Charitable Funds committee aaded: “The prints capture such a poignant moment of support for Lincolnshire’s NHS staff, and the money raised in their sales will provide support to our staff and patients during a time in

Bunny-Proof Your Home Rabbits need space to run around and explore so it’s important to protect belongings. Cover all wires with plastic sleeves or flex tubing, or lift them 3-4 feet out of reach of your rabbit.

Skirting boards gnawed should be covered with plastic guards, 2x4s or furring strips. It may be easier to block off areas since rabbits like to chew the undersides of beds, items on bookshelves, house plants, and more. Basically, your rabbit will try to chew everything in reach.

Provide Fresh Hay A rabbit’s diet should mainly consist of fresh hay, which should be provided at all times. Baby rabbits can be given alfalfa mixed in, and adult rabbits should be fed timothy hay, grass hay, or oat hay.

Using a large hay feeder is helpful because it keeps large amounts of hay dry, clean, and accessible.

Other dietary needs Supplement hay with fresh vegetables, fiber-rich pellets (in limited quantities for adult rabbits), and fresh water daily.

Set Up a Litter Box Rabbits have a natural inclination to poop and pee in one area so set up a medium-sized cat litter box or shallow storage bin near their food and water. Put a thin layer of rabbit-safe, recycled newspaper pellet litter at the bottom of the litter box. Do not use clay/clumping cat litter or wood shavings, as they are not safe for rabbits. Put hay on top of the litter as they like to eat hay and poop at the same time, so this will encourage good litter box habits.

Lockdown pet care CORONAVIRUS and the subsequent lockdown have been stressful for us all, but for those of us with pets there is constant access to stress relief, writes vet Elizaberth Elders of the Veterinary Hospital, Lincoln.

Pets providing unconditional love, a clinically proven reduction in blood pressure, and (for dog owners) no excuse to mope and avoid exercise.

However, as a nation of pet lovers we need to remember their needs as well. Many pets will embrace the sudden change of routine, but for others it may prove stressful just like it is for us.

Entertainment For many dogs, the change of routine will can be very strange.

The exercise restrictions of lock-down may mean some dogs are dropping from three walks daily to only one, or are being walked by people who wouldn’t normally take them.

Ensure this a positive experience by taking a treat pouch with you and rewarding your dog when they are calm and walking nicely. If they are giddy and overly jumpy this could be due to the change of routine - do not punish this behaviour, but reward the good behaviour.

Give your pet mental stimulation by on training every day. At The Veterinary Hospital we’ve been using those piles of toilet rolls as jumps for our dogs and even rabbits to tackle. Otherwise revise those things they already know, like sit and stay, and try working on new tricks in a positive way.

Cats may also need support with the changes to routine – especially if there are young children in the house. Always make sure your cat has a space of its own, where it will never be disturbed.Vets have anecdotally reported an increase in stressrelated cystitis now owners are home more, so try to keep to routines where possible and monitor your cat for signs of stress.

Preparing for After Lockdown One of the concerns about lockdown is an increase in separation anxiety when it ends.

Pets experience distress when separated from their owner, leading to howling, barking and often destructive behaviour. If your pet gets used to you being home all the time then when you go back to work they may feel scared, unsettled and bored.

Make sure that your pet has time away from you every day with mental stimulation to entertain them. Interactive treat toys are easily available now, and can help to make your pet work for their food and use their brain. Scattering their food in the garden so they have to hunt it out is another option.

After Lockdown Consider having a neighbour, family member or dog-walker visit for a couple of hours when you go back to work. Leave those interactive toys stuffed with food to entertain them, if they can be left safely (do not leave them with choking hazards like rawhide or bone chews).

For elderly dogs who need little and often exercise it might be worth considering hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture or k-laser treatment to help build up their muscle.

Gougère - a delicious way to use whatever’s in the fridge GOUGÈRE is a savoury choux pastry served as an open pie and ideal for using up fridge ends.

This month’s recipe is from Valerie Hope, owner of the Wig and Mitre.

Valerie may have a culinary team at the pub/restaurant on Lincoln’s Steep Hill, but she is a dab hand in the kitchen herself and still loves to cook for her family.

Choux Pastry: 7.5 fl oz water 3 oz butter 3.75 oz plain flour 3 eggs (medium) 3 oz grated cheese (cheddar, gruyere, whatever you have) Method: Sift flour Place water and butter in a saucepan and bring to the boil, when bubbling add the flour and stir vigorously until smooth (about 3 seconds). Cool mixture for about 5 minutes, beat eggs with a fork and beat into the flour mixture, slowly ensuring the mixture keeps its shape (you may not need all the beaten egg). Beat for about three minutes until the mixture looks glossy, add the cheese.

The filling - it is better to make this first The gougere can be cooked with a variety of fillings: Chicken with mushrooms and asparagus Seafood with fennel Chicken livers and bacon

Ratatouille is also an option.

You make an appropriate sauce and add whatever you like to eat or need to use up.

I used left over chicken with mushrooms and asparagus, the two latter ingredients are a marriage made in heaven.

Valerie’s filling 1 oz butter 1 tablespoon flour 5 fl oz milk 1 shallot finely chopped 5 fl oz chicken stock (or water with a stock cube in it) 4 oz mushrooms finely sliced 4 – 6 asparagus stems cut into small pieces 8 oz left over chicken cut into small pieces Chopped parsley mixed with 3 oz grated cheese

the pastry, spoon the filling into the middle of the dish and top with the grated cheese and parsley, bake for ten minutes at 400 and a further twenty/twenty five minutes at 425, (times may vary according to your oven), the pastry will rise up around the edges and become crisp.

Serve on its own or with a tossed green salad.

Method: place butter in a saucepan, add shallot and sweat until soft, add flour and make a roux, cook for one minute, add the milk and the stock then add the mushrooms and cook for a couple of minutes, season to taste, add the chicken and the asparagus.

A growing interest in food

By Prof Nigel Curry, Co-Chair, Lincoln Food Partnerhip IN these uncertain times, I’m drawn to my book ‘The Wartime Garden’ – full of practical hints about back garden vegetable growing and the contribution it made to the health (and spirit) of the nation in the Second World War.

In the Lincoln Food Partnership, we’ve seen a resurgence in such local food growing, even before Coronavirus. Right in the centre of Lincoln I recently visited an ‘ordinary’ back garden that is making its residents all but self-sufficient.

With staggered planting, sheltered corners and a greenhouse, fruit trees, salads, herbs, beans, peppers, tomatoes, onions, carrots, marrows, courgettes, rhubarb, and soft fruit, provide an organic harvest nearly year round.

With bottling (chutneys, jams, relishes, pickles and piccalilli) and freezing, this saves about £1,500 a year, to say nothing of the fresh air and exercise! And food waste – peelings, cores, roots etc. - goes into the composter to return to the soil – good for the environment and the pocket.

Round the corner, we have a local park.

Here a community group does a similar thing. At 4.5 acres, this is a scale up from a garden, but it has a particular advantage you can learn how to grow from those in the know – and grow in confidence, too.

Looking round the City, you will find small food growing projects are now quite common – often in Church curtilages for example. And most have web or Facebook sites for advice, if face to face is not advised for a while.

Up a scale again, the Lincolnshire Organic Growers Association is a group – from small gardeners to small holders – promoting organic horticulture through

learning and mutual support. Their Facebook site also lets you join in remotely.

Planting out back garden vegetables in these times, and at this time of year, is worth serious thought. There is a lot of information online about how to do it, you can buy seeds online, and it is an instructive project for the whole family. And of course, with patience, it provides a source of food.

New foodbank for Welton area LINCOLN Community Larder has opened a new outreach site in Welton to provide basic nutritious food for an increasing number of people in rural areas in need during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Operating out of St Mary’s Church, Welton, each Thursday afternoon, 1.30 -3pm, this new site is a community effort, run by volunteers from local churches in the Welton area.

The Rev Paul Levins (pictured) is behind the initiative: “Prompted by the current crisis, the churches of the Welton area felt called to help local people struggling to put food on the table. We recognised that for some people it’s just too difficult or expensive to travel into Lincoln to access a food bank, so we wanted to provide a local service for our rural communities.

“We provide an emergency three-day food parcel to people with a Larder voucher obtained from organisations such as the Benefits Office, Citizens Advice, CAP (Christians Against Poverty), and locally through Church leaders and the Parish Council Offices. Full details of how to obtain a voucher can, however, be found on the Lincoln Community Larder website.”

Paul continued, “We opened for the first time on Maundy Thursday and managed to meet the needs of our first clients.

Chiselwood to the rescue with PPE for LIVES FIRST Responder charity LIVES had to stop attending emergencies for a few days due to lack of PPE (personal protective equipment).

Frontline staff get scrubs from university THE University of Lincoln is providing its expertise and facilities to produce scrubs for frontline workers.

In partnership with For The Love Of Scrubs - a nationwide project started by nurse Ashleigh Lindsell from Pilgrim Hospital in Boston - the University is increasing its contribution to help frontline workers in the fight against Covid-19.

The university’s School of Engineering is now also producing 700 safety visors each week. The visors are being provided to frontline workers including GPs, pharmacists, care workers and supermarket employees.

The university donated £50,000 to get the 3D printing project underway, and since then more than £60,000 has been raised from more than 1,500 supporters through JustGiving.

The first visors have been met with thanks from NHS staff on social media, with tweets such as: “Message from doctors on the frontline - Thank you Lincoln Uni @unilincoln for the PPE.Very much appreciated. @ULHT_News”.

Fiona Robertson, a garment technician within the School of Design has opened the pattern cutting and manufacturing studios at the University of Lincoln to make scrubs with a team of volunteers.

Fiona said: “I heard about the project and thought we have all this

space and equipment at the university that could be used to produce scrubs. It’s a large space, so we can observe social distancing while we work, and it’s good for us to be doing something positive during this difficult time too.

“If we all do what we can, then we will move through this situation faster. We have the facilities and staff to be able to help, therefore we help – no question.”

The team of volunteers began cutting out the scrubs pattern for other volunteer sewers in Lincolnshire who may not have the space or equipment to do so. The University of Lincoln team is now sewing and producing as many scrubs as possible to help healthcare staff.

For The Love Of Scrubs quickly attracted national support with more than 20,000 people now volunteering their help to produce scrubs for hospital workers.

Liz Lucas - gardener for all seasons WE have been talking about simplifying the garden over the past two months but I rather think that with the current situation there will be many of you getting out into the garden much more and finding that you like it.

It is calming, absorbing and rewarding because we are nurturing things into life. We are a sociable, nurturing and creative species. As we cannot do the sociable bit at the moment, which is difficult for everyone (but will not be for ever), we must turn to the nurturing and the creative sides.

To help you on the gardening front I have started a Facebook page entitled Tips From An Ordinary Garden. It offers hints, ideas, dispels myths and explains how to do things with plants. It is based on my many years of gardening experience and the many, many mistakes I have made over those years, particularly with seeds.

From the unavailability of vegetable seeds I can only assume you are all giving growing your own veg a go. Good for you.

Growing seeds can be tricky to start with so here are a few tips: l Don’t sow all the packet at once, in one pot. They will come up too thickly and collapse through overcrowding. Sow thinly, just a few seeds, perhaps in rows in a tray or outside in a shallow trench. l Seeds have a store of food in them so do not need feeding for some time. l When they come up they get their first leaves, which are quite different from their later leaves. When the second and third lot of leaves arrive, you need to think about repotting if they are indoors. l Repotting means gently removing the seedlings from their current home to a new, clean pot on their own (clean pots are essential, wash them before use). This will give them fresh soil and so more food. All of this takes up a fair amount of space so be prepared.

THE photograph above shows the Tithe Barn, owned by the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln Cathedral.

Dating back to the 15th century, the impressive building is situated below the present Vicarsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Court in Lincoln, and above the Christâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital Girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; High School (LHS) building.

Sir Francis Hill, Chairman of Governors of LHS, and eminent local historian, wrote about the building in the Summer 1948 edition of the school magazine. He informed us that Oliver Sutton, Bishop of Lincoln in the 13th Century, ordered a court to be built in which the vicars of the Cathedral might live together.

By 1309 a hall, kitchen and several rooms had been built apparently for the senior vicars, because in 1328 additional quarters were ordered for the junior vicars. However it is likely that it was more than 100 years later that the building known as the Tithe Barn was completed.

The same edition of the LHS magazine noted that the summer term of 1948 began on April 15 and that the Tithe Barn had been used for the school lunches for the first time.

School lunches had of course been available before, but more space was needed, and the change also coincided with the 1944 Education Actâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s initiative to provide free school meals for children.

The Act made it an entitlement for pupils to receive a free school meal, although five years later a small charge of tuppence haâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;penny was introduced, which was gradually increased until legislation in 1980 removed the requirement of

LEAs to provide a meal for every pupil.

The Tithe Barn dining hall was formally opened by the Bishop of Lincoln appropriately enough at a luncheon party on June 7, 1948. A special preterm staff meeting had been called to discuss the implications of the new facility, Headmistress Miss Cleave wrote in the school magazine that readers would hardly conceive how much organisation a school lunch hour required. True to form, she also took the opportunity to remind parents â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;Śto make a concerted attempt to improve their childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manners, particularly at table.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Pointing out that the children would now eat in gracious surroundings, she issued the warning that a higher standard of behaviour was being set, and that many children fell lamentably far below it.

The late Mary Lucas, nĂŠe West, who was a pupil at the time, had a somewhat different view of the event. Seemingly unaware of the privilege of dining in the splendid historic surroundings, she and many others found it irksome to have to climb up Greestone Stairs to eat school lunch, especially in bad weather.

She also recalled that Miss Cleaveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign to improve table manners had started long before, when eagle-eyed staff heading each table would reproach the pupils on a daily basis for their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;roughâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; manners and speech.

Miss Cleave used part of her Upper School Speech Day address to ask her audience to imagine, historical associations apart, how many schools would have so fine a refectory.

The historic building currently forms part of Lincoln University Technical College.

B r i t a i n ’s g o t c re at i ve talent university moves festival online WITH digital technologies transforming the way we live our lives, Britain’s creative industries are the heart of the country’s global success and economy.

These industries influence how the rest of the world sees us. From Harry Potter to Grand Theft Auto, Adele and Burberry - our innovation and individuality makes Britain a creative economic powerhouse.

Generating more than £100bn a year to the UK economy and employing more than 3.2 million people (or nearly 10% of all UK jobs), the creative industries are vitally important to the financial success of the country (source: thecreativeindustries.co.uk) That’s according to Gyles Lingwood (pictured), co-founder of the Lincoln Festival of Creativity, which showcases emerging talent from the University of Lincoln and aims to inspire the local community.

As Director of Education at the university’s College of Arts, Gyles has worked for the University for the last 16 years, after a successful creative career in London’s advertising and design industry.

In 2017 the first Lincoln Festival of Creativity was launched to pull together the wide-ranging disciplines of the end of year degree show exhibitions and performances across the College of Arts. The festival has grown to over 3,500 visitors last year.

The inaugural festival featured Sir John Hegarty who gave a talk titled ‘Sitting on a beanbag doesn’t make you creative’ and held a signing of his latest book ‘Hegarty on Creativity: There Are No Rules’.

and actor Robert Webb who shared the lessons he had learned throughout his career.

The festival is not just a University event that benefits the students, but also the wider community and local businesses.

“The festival is the University throwing open its doors and saying ‘come and see what we do’. The festival is all about getting involved, exploring the many different aspects of creativity and being inspired,” said Gyles.

This year, due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Lincoln Festival of Creativity will not be taking place in the traditional, physical way.

“Instead, in the true spirit of creativity and problem solving, the organisers are developing online versions of their original plans to celebrate, share and explore creativity across a wide range of disciplines including 2D and 3D design, digital and traditional media, photography, film, music, fine art, fashion and performance arts. All exhibitions are free and open to everyone.”

The Lincoln Festival of Creativity 2020 website (www.lincolnfestivalofcreativity.co.uk) will launch on Monday, June 1 showcasing the creative work taking place across the University of Lincoln, city, region and beyond throughout June and July (extending the Festival period).

Global recognition for photographer LINCOLN-based photographer Tom Martin has been Highly Commended in a global awards ceremony.

His striking shot titled Ex Child Soldier with his Cows, South Sudan was praised by judges in the World Food Programme Food for Life category of Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2020.

“This is a stunning image,” said Caroline Kenyon, Founder/Director of the global awards, which are run from Market Rasen.

“The world is in the grip of Covid19 and normal life, whatever that may be, has stopped for all of us. But photos such as these remind us of the ways and cultural habits that mean so much to us and bind us together.”

The lockdown did not mar the celebrations as these were held on line at the end of April with winners announced by musician and famous cheesemaker Alex James of Blur.

the healing power of art ART as therapy is a subject close to Lincoln illustrator Helen Dearnley’s heart who has run workshops for people with mental health issues and their carers.

She hopes to run more workshops in and around Lincoln once the Covid-19 lockdown is over.

Helen grew up in the 1980s in Lincolnshire and graduated in 2008 BA (hons) Fine Art & Illustration having returned to university as a mature student.

She was inspired to become an artist due to Norwegian band A-ha’s popular and successful 1986 music video Take On Me. “The blackbird became my artist’s signature, which stems from the Beatles track, and the lyrics ‘Take these broken wings and learn to fly’.”

Helen became a carer in 2013 when her son developed mental health issues and her career as a comic and graphic novel illustrator was adversely affected.

“I became an unpaid carer for my son, who suffers from mental health issues and I developed the workshops to combine my expertise as an artist and illustrator with experience as a carer to support us both and for me to continue to practice.

“I developed my own zine entitled Ms Blackbird’s Home For Peculiar People, following on from my own experiences as a carer, and this was included in the Laydeez Do Comics Awards Weekend at the Freeword Centre in London back in March 2019, along with a review session with Una Comics, whose On Sanity project is about her role as a carer for her mother.”

With stong belief that artists and carers should be paid a proper salary Helen was interviewed by BBC Politics last December at 10 Decimal Place on Burton Road ahead of the General Election on this issue.

In 2017 Helen was invited to take part in Maryanne Hobbs’ Art Is Everywhere show at Feren’s Art Gallery in Hull and has previously exhibited in Norway, London, Italy, Nottingham, St. Louis, Berlin as well as Lincoln.

She continues to practice as an illustrator, specialising in comics and zines – her comic Taped From MTV was made in collaboration with U.S. funk duo Chromeo (pictured), but she is also returning to her fine art practice with her new sound art piece Lost Dreams.

Female artists support women’s refuge virtual exhibition A group of female furniture artists from across the country are using COVID-19 as a catalyst to create inspiring wall art for people who have fled from domestic abuse.

Gallery owner Sarah Lamballe (pictured). met Lucy from EDAN Lincs, a domestic abuse service charity a week before lockdown.

“When Lucy spoke to me about her desire to brighten up the rooms in the newly decorated refuges, I instantly thought of my talented friends in the online painting community. I felt so lucky to be part of such an inspiring, supportive group of women and felt sure they’d want to help by creating artwork.”

Sarah contacted Sam Clark, founder of the Facebook group The Female Furniture Painters Club who instantly recognised the project was the perfect fit for the women she mentors “Many of the women in my group have creative gifts that extend beyond refinishing and upcycling furniture to painting canvases and fine art. And we ALL recognise how important creativity is for our own mental health, so the Creative Freedom project is a perfect fit to give us focus, structure and positivity with a

collective purpose at a time when it is most needed.” Sam added.

Sarah, Sam and Lucy launched the project on April 3 via a live stream into the group and within days over 30 women from all over the UK have pledged support. They have all been allocated a space to create a piece for - a bedroom, communal space or hallway in the charity’s refuges.

The deadline for digital imagery is May 8 when Sarah will work with her niece Beki Doig, a Lincolnshire photographer and videographer furloughed from her job, gifting her own time to create a virtual exhibition that will premiere on YouTube.

At a later date, a real-world exhibition will be hosted by Sarah’s Bricktree Gallery in Caistor.

Lucy said “We know how difficult this time will be for anyone living in a domestic abuse situation and there is predicted to be a much greater need for help and support from charities like EDAN Lincs due to the pandemic.”

EdanLincs hopes that some pieces may even be auctioned to raise funds for the charity to support more people to flee abuse and find a safe haven to start again. https://EDANlincs.org.uk/

the arts respond creatively to crisis

BY ChRIs KIRKWOOd CEO LINCOLN dRILL hALL THE entertainment and arts sector nationally has like many others, been hugely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions placed through social distancing and isolation.

On March 16 the moment the Prime Minister announced that people should stay away from theatres our team at Lincoln Drill Hall had to work in a very different way.

Instead of promoting the spring and summer season, we were plunged into a process of contacting around 50 artists to let them know that we were either going to have to move or unfortunately cancel their performance with us.

We also had to contact around 2,000 individual customers to arrange refunds or movement of around 10,000 tickets purchased. Like many businesses we had to get our heads around what furlough would mean.

Currently 90% of our staff is furloughed and Lincoln Drill Hall is completely closed.

However, that doesn’t mean that the sector isn’t being creative.

That’s the beauty of art and culture. It’s flexible and can respond to challenges in such positive ways. There’s so much art and performance out there. Our Fishtank Youth Theatre leaders are setting members weekly challenges through their Facebook page.

Our friends at LPAC are doing the same for their youth theatre and still presenting their weekly L’il Pacs sessions for toddlers on line.

Our partners at Jamie Marcus Productions have taken rehearsals for their summer show West Side Story on line, with weekly live rehearsals taking place. We’re also part of Lincolnshire One Venues, a group of nine arts centre across the county. Together we’re delivering Connecting Communities, a three-year programme of community focussed work. The team are on Facebook, live every day setting more creative things for people to do.

We’ve also been involved in a small way in the increasing amount of live streaming of shows taking place on line. In 2016-17 we cocommissioned and helped to open a tour of Getting Better Slowly,

by Adam Pownall who at that time was our Programme Manager.

Adam’s personal story of dealing with Guillain Barre Syndrome was screened live on line a couple of weeks ago. We were also able to signpost audiences to an on line stream of Hansel and Gretel, due to be performed here at the end of March.

Like everyone, we wait with baited breath for news of when we might be able to re-open. We’re staying positive, confident that we can get back up and running quickly. Our autumn programme is just as vibrant as audiences have come to expect from your Lincoln Drill Hall. In the meantime, head online and there’s a world of arts and entertainment being created for you to enjoy.

They are regularly updating the programme and shows currently announced are: Frankenstein - available to May 8 Directed by Academy Award® winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), this powerful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel explores ideas of nature versus nurture and was notable for the inspired conceit of stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating between the role of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature between each performance. This split casting is followed through in the online streaming, with Miller as the creature from 1 May. At the end of April it released a box set of eight Shakespeare’s from the RSC and Shakespeare’s Globe’s archive, along with their own filmed version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream adapted by Russell T. Davies and a special adaptation of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet Romeo & Juliet, filmed on location in Hungary. Cancer carers determined to stay in touch during crisis

By Lousie Irving Macmillian Volunteer Coordinator AT Macmillan, we want to help everyone living with cancer to live life as fully as they can.

There are around 28,000 people with cancer in Lincolnshire and this is set to double by 2030. We understand the many ways in which a cancer diagnosis can affect life and thousands of people living with cancer across Lincolnshire depend on our support every day.

Lincolnshire’s Macmillan Direct Volunteer Service, made up of seven local schemes, has been up and running for aroundsix years and hasn’t stopped for a pandemic. The service started in response to our Macmillan professionals, such as nurses and support workers, telling us there wasn’t enough support for people with cancer in the local community.

As you know, Lincolnshire is a rural county with lots of countryside – meaning that people can often live far away from family, friends and services. When you have cancer, feeling isolated can be scary. So, when people with cancer told us they needed Sally Wilkinson emotional support closer to home, we listened.

Lead Volunteer Our dedicated volunteers are used to being the friendly face that walks through the front door and having a chat to someone over a cup of tea and a biscuit, Macmillan volunteers can make a person with cancer’s day a little brighter. Now they are faced with new challenges – supporting people from far away.

Ordinarily, our volunteers help with tasks like food shopping, tidying, dropping off prescriptions or taking someone to visit a loved one’s grave. Or setting up a support stand in the local library that’s stocked with high-quality cancer resources like booklets about treatment and side-effects.

Now unable to visit people face to face because of coronavirus, Macmillan volunteers are offering vital emotional support over the telephone or video to make sure they are still there for people when they need to talk.

Since retiring Sally Wilkinson has been the Lead Volunteer for a Macmillan Home service for the past five years. She leads five other volunteers, takes referrals, assesses people that have been referred and then matches them up with a volunteer.

Sally explained:“The team of volunteers that I lead are very kind and experienced, some even have a cancer experience themselves. As well as the regular support at home, we sometimes do group days out. We did a big gardening session once, where all our volunteers and the people they support came together to clear an overgrown garden – everyone loved it and it gave a sense of accomplishment.

“We’re now offering a telephone support service only, because of the coronavirus.

The volunteers are struggling with not being able to offer support face to face. A lot of the people we support are lonely.

I’ve always enjoyed popping over to see them, I really miss that. It’s hard when you talk to someone on the phone and they’re feeling isolated.

“Recently, we’ve been asked a lot about financial support and how to apply for welfare benefits. We can direct people to the financial guidance on the Macmillan Support Line to apply for one-off Macmillan grants or to local organisations to apply for benefits.

“It’s a really worrying time for a lot of people with cancer and we’re supporting them any way we can.”

Support fund for care providers A FUND has been set up to support care providers coping with the Covid-19 outbreak.

With growing suspected or confirmed cases of the virus Lincolnshire County Council has stepped in to help support care homes, home care providers, nursing homes and those providing supported living.

Under the scheme, care providers can apply for funding to cover l additional costs they incur to include: l workforce including staff overtime and travel to work any necessary agency or temporary staffing costs l recruitment and training l additional personal protective equipment (PPE) Any other reasonable costs will be considered.

The council has written to care providers with details of how to apply for funding support.

ambucopter returns to the night sky in May DOCTORS working for the air ambulance service had been called back to the NHS over recent weeks to support hospitals in coping with the Coronavirus pandemic.

Along with some crew members self-isolating, it meant that the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance had to scale back night missions and projected it would not be able to fly at all, at night, through May. However, some of the crew members, including doctors, are now able to fulfil some shifts with us which means the service will be able to provide around 30 percent night-time cover through May. LNAA CEO, Karen Jobling said: “It was absolutely right that some of our doctors returned to support the NHS in coping with the Coronavirus where needed and we are so proud of these members of the LNAA team.

“We’re delighted that some of these clinicians are now able to come back to us and provide front-line, pre-hospital critical care that helps to saves lives across Lincs & Notts. We, like everyone else,

Taking wellbeing step in right direction LINCOLN Performing Arts Centre is asking local people to take part in a creative arts project based on the NHS 5 Steps to Wellbeing.

Over a six-week period from Friday May 1, participants are encouraged to document themselves undertaking cultural and creative activities, and to submit these short videos as part of a mass-participatory community project that nurtures wellbeing.

This material will be collated to form a series of episodes and final artwork that combine to form a wellness guide that keeps our bodies and minds active, healthy and strong, together.

The inspiration for this project has come from the NHS Five Steps to Wellbeing: connecting with others; being physically active; learning new skills; giving to others; being present in the moment.

Wellness Compass project producer Dawn Richmond-Gordon says:“In a time when our appreciation for the NHS is at the forefront of our minds, it seems very fitting that we recognise the NHS’s longstanding and sound guidance for wellbeing, not only during this difficult time, but always.”

To give potential participants some inspiration the LPAC team will be sharing tips and footage of examples of how they are using culture and creativity to nurture their wellbeing, but these videos are just to get the ball rolling.

“At its heart Wellness Compass is a project for the community, by the community,” says Craig Morrow, Artistic Director, “Our purpose is to promote wellbeing through arts and culture and although it seems as though access might be limited at the moment, really creativity resides in all of us and always has done.

It is in this spirit that we invite people to participate in an investigation to seek out creativity in the everyday, and to share it with each other as a means to nurturing wellness.”

Dawn agrees: “What we are really interested in is the approach to creativity of our community members. We want to hear your stories, see your creative adventures and learn from your advice.”

Time to take a deep breath... how to ease anxiety during crisis

BY MEL hOLLIdAY NLP PRACtItIONER THERE are many apps and conversations circulating on how breathing techniques calm us. Does this really work and why?

Our brains and nervous system rely on information sent to us, via our environment and information we have stored in our brains based on memory.

Using this information, we can react to situations, without even being conscious of our actions. Imagine you are walking down the street and are confronted by a lion.

The next steps will be out of your control, you will see and probably turn and run.

This is called flight and fight. The brain immediately connects the lion as danger and signals from the nervous system turns off anything you no longer need to do in the moment ie digest, it then turns everything on to enable you to run: increase breathing, heart rate, senses all heighten. Once the danger is past the brain switches back to normal.

The brain monitors the oxygen levels to work out whether we are in flight and fight. In todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifestyle our bodies are often in heightened stress levels for many reasons, the Coronavirus and its impact will be increasing everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stress levels, as we are all experiencing a new danger not felt before.

If the brain is monitoring oxygen levels when we are stressed, it makes sense that it also can do the opposite. By using controlled breathing techniques, we can encourage the brain to calm and take us out of flight and flight and into rest and digest.

There are many versions of breathing techniques several which have been around for hundreds of years, practiced by many as a daily practice. Some may be called pranayama, Buteyko or athletic breath, however they have a similar basis.

Having practiced this for a few years, I have found it helpful to get my mind calm when delivering a presentation or difficult conversation. I have found it fantastic to watch young people in schools when I have delivered the six modules, as they rest and calm after being energetic at the start of the lesson. I have also found it very beneficial for myself and others whilst adapting to our new daily way of life at present.

When you are ready, focus on your breathing. Work out where you breath is.

Can you take a deeper breath getting the air in your lungs and moving down into your stomach. Practice will allow for deeper breath.

The technique is simple.

Take a deep breath in, then expel though the nose. Now start counting, breathing in for the count of four, hold the breath for the count of four, breath out for four and hold breath for four. Repeat initially for 46 rounds. This practice can be practiced daily or when things feel overwhelming.

First find a quiet place, preferably outdoors where you will be undisturbed for 10 minutes. Sit or lie comfortable with cushions and a blanket if that helps. If you are safe to do so, close your eyes and breath slowly and normally through the nose: in and out. (if the nose is blocked, the mouth is fine, however as you get to practice

The best time for me is beginning and end of the day in bed. The practice of breathing out can be extended to the count of six or eight once you are comfortable and good practice is for 10-15 minutes. A piece of favourite music or a timer means you will not have to count, just concentrate on the breath.

appeal to cover £1m drop in hospice funds A CHARITY facing a loss of £1m in funding has launched an appeal to cover a shortfall caused by the coronavirus outbereak St Barnabas Hospice fears it could lose £1,000,000 over the three months, which is the equivalent of 20 weeks of care within their specialist Inpatient Unit on Nettleham Road, Lincoln.

Since the outbreak began, the Hospice has seen a huge drop in fundraising income that pays for most of their care. Their charity shops are temporarily closed, and many fundraising activities and events have been cancelled.

Chris Wheway, Chief Executive of St Barnabas Hospice, said: “We want to reassure the public that we are still here, caring in the community. Our clinical team is as dedicated as ever to continue delivering our outstanding care and support to those who need us.

Our nurses, doctors and healthcare staff are working on the frontline to deliver round-the-clock care through this pandemic, much like their NHS colleagues.

“Over the coming months, we know we will be asked to care for many more vulnerable people facing the end of their lives We are also preparing to support our NHS partners as the pressure mounts over the coming weeks.

“Our staff have adapted enormously, with the majority of nonclinical staff working from home. Our Nursing teams have changed their working patterns to ensure we can keep as many of our beds open as possible and our Community teams are adapting hourly to patient and family requests to deliver the best care possible for patients at home. The Wellbeing and Bereavement Support Services we offer are continuing through telephone or video call to ensure no one is alone in these challenging times. We couldn’t ask for more and I am extremely proud of my colleagues for their flexibility through this.

“People in our local communities must do all that is needed to look after themselves and their loved ones. The safety and security of their families comes first, always. My request to the public is simply that if they support the goals we share for local people, and can spare the money, please make a donation today.

How do you stay at home when you have no home?

WHILE much of the country is locked-down and social distancing, the Nomad Centre in Lincoln continues to provide emergency accommodation to those without a permanent home.

The centre is part of Lincolnshire YMCA is the only facility of its kind in the county and Covid-19 has brought a host of new safeguarding risks.

Emergency accommodation involves the movement of people as residents move on and new ones arrive and lockdown began the Nomad Centre has been completely full.

People who have never accessed the service before now need it a result of losing their jobs or homes because of COVID. The Nomad Centre has helped 18 people to find new homes since virus restrictions started with support from the YMCA Hostels and Lincoln Council’s Rough Sleeping Team. This has taken the total to 69 since opening its doors in early December.

Through thorough risk assessments,YMCA Lincolnshire across all of its accommodation housing over 170 people in the city - has introduced a range of safety measures to keep residents and employees as safe as possible while still delivering crucial services.

Sarah Turner, the Director of Housing said: “Staff and residents have all adapted better than anyone could have expected.

“This is a challenging time for us all, but by working together and supporting each other we will maintain a safe and positive environment. The emotional resilience of some of the people we serve continues to amaze and inspire me.

“While most of us look to friends and family during this time for support and help, for some people this just isn’t an option.”

The pandemic makes public support for the project more important than ever.

Crisis impacts on divorce settlements COUPLES contemplating divorce, in the middle of divorce proceedings or dissolving a civil partnership could be affected by the current turbulent financial situation.

Paul Cooper of Ringrose Law (below) looks at the potential impact on settlements of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

PRE-SEPARATION Many parties may be wondering whether now is a good time to secure a favourable financial settlement whilst the value of their assets may have decreased.

Deciding what to do for the best will depend on various factors.

Situations where enforced close proximity could spill over into domestic issues or some other form of emotional abuse seek urgent help on what interim arrangements will ensure everyone stays safe.

Here are some things to think about.

If you think it would help to have a written agreement, you can do this yourselves or via an accredited Mediator.

PART WAY THROUGH A DIVORCE OR NEGOTIATING A FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT ?The starting point in financial negotiations is to evaluate what is the marital pot. You may well have shared financial information by exchanging “Form E’s” accompanied by bank statements, tax returns and so on. You may already have agreed a joint net asset figure on which a settlement can be based.

If you have not reached an agreement, one solution might be to cease further negotiations and maintain the status quo or agree an interim holding arrangement.

Alternatively, it might be possible to agree certain aspects such as dividing capital but leaving the income / maintenance related aspects open.

Whether this is advisable depends on the nature of the capital assets. If, for example, you have contemplated a settlement where one of you would retain, say shares, and the other cash in lieu, this will probably not currently result in a fair settlement.

Wealth Managers advise not putting all your eggs on one basket and the same philosophy applies to a divorce settlement.

WHAT ABOUT PENSIONS? COVID 19’s impact on the market highlights the importance of obtaining expert advice when it comes to sorting out pension assets on divorce. Many couples have a number of pension assets between them. Understanding the different types of scheme and how their values might be affected by stock market fluctuations is crucial.

Some “define benefits” pensions such as public sector or final salary schemes guarantee a certain level of income on retirement. Usually this is based on years of service and the final salary of the pension member. Conversely, the capital value and therefore income for

private “money purchase” pensions are linked directly to the performance of the investments. Even if at the given date the fund value or cash equivalent of the two types of pensions arrangements are the same, the value of the underlying benefits and the reliability of the income stream may differ considerably.

Pension Sharing Orders, which determine how Pension assets are divided between the parties, have to be expressed as a percentage of the fund being divided, rather than a monetary figure, so the amount paid to the recipients pension fund can differ quite significantly in value to what was originally intended.

If you are close to retirement age and were planning to draw down on the pension part of the settlement in the near future, hoping the proposed share would produce a certain level of income, you may need to consider thinking again. Consider a ‘nominal’ maintenance order to hedge against anticipated income not meeting your needs.

BONUS AND DEFERRED CONSIDERATION In addition to base salary, there is often a performance related bonus comprising both cash and other incentives. Wherever possible and particularly when bonuses are not guaranteed, it is better to try and aim for a more even distribution of base salary.

Where maintenance is being paid, either to a spouse or child, there is always the safety net of being able to apply to the Court for a variation if there is a material change of circumstances.

DIVORCE SETTLEMENT NO LONGER SEEMS FAIR? Generally, the capital components of a divorce settlement cannot be varied expect in these circumstances. Income (maintenance) components can be varied.

When an unforeseen event invalids the fundamental assumption on which the original Order was based, sometime after the Order is made, the Court does have the power to re-open the settlement.

Whether the impact of COVID-19 will be viewed as an unforeseen

event remains to be seen. However, the Court will look at how quickly you took action if you feel you fall into this category.

HONOURING MAINTENANCE COMMITMENTS IN LOCKDOWN If the assumption upon which the Maintenance Order was based changes materially, the Court will always consider a variation.

Wherever possible, talk to the other party, explain the situation and see if you can agree a compromise with a written record of what you have agreed.

More pain for property developers stEVIE hEAFFORd, dIRECtOR, WRIGht VIGAR ChARtEd ACCOuNtANts IT remains to be seen what impact Covid-19 and the lockdown procedures will have on the housing market going forward but certainly many property developers will be feeling the pinch.

It may be that, at least in the shorter term, they will find new properties harder to sell and may even be forced to change their trading model such that properties are let rather than sold.

This may only a be temporary measure until the market picks back up to provide a welcome income in the intervening period, but it can have important ramifications from a tax perspective.

VAT Recovery VAT on inputs on the construction of new residential properties can be recovered in full based on the developer’s intended use for the property. If the first grant of a major interest in the property is intended to be a zero-rated disposal (as a sale of the freehold or grant of a long leasehold would be) the input VAT can be fully recovered.

If, instead of a sale, the developer decides to hold the property for letting, this is an exempt supply and a partial exemption calculation would be needed. This could lead to a clawback of some of the VAT already recovered.

There are ways to avoid this issue, for example, by a sale of the property to an associated company but care is needed before taking such a step.

Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) To add to the pain, high value rental properties owned within companies are potentially subject to the ATED regime.

This currently catches properties which are worth more than £500,000 (based on value as at April 1, 2017 or purchase price if later) and, if caught, the annual charge ranges from £3,700 up to £236,250 (across six bands).

For the year ended March 31, 2021 both the ATED return and any tax due must be dealt with by April 30, 2020 otherwise penalties will be imposed.

There are a number of exemptions from the charge which can benefit both property developers and those operating letting businesses. Whilst this is good news, the exemption has to be claimed via submission of a “nil return”.

With effect from April 2018, ATED returns must be submitted online and this involves a registration process which can be time consuming.

ATED values are soon to be rebased to April 1, 2022 values and it will be interesting to see the impact of both Brexit and Covid19 in this regard.

Highlighted below are some of the issues that families, individuals and professionals might face when supporting those that lack capacity during the Coronavirus pandemic and what action they could take: Statutory Wills: During this uncertain time, there has been an increase in people making a Will. It is just as important for someone who has lost capacity to make a Will too, and I can assist you to apply for a Statutory Will (a Will approved by the Court of Protection). A Deputy (appointed by the Court) or an Attorney (appointed by the individual) can make this type of application.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs): Now is a time when more people than ever will be considering the need to plan for the future. What happens if you or a loved one gets coronavirus?

Who will manage the finances or make decisions about lifesustaining treatment? If you want this to be a family member or friend, rather than a doctor who doesn’t know you, now is the time to consider getting an LPA in place.

Business LPAs: Similarly, if you have a business, you may wish to also consider a business LPA to ensure someone is in place to continue running the business if you were unable to do so

temporarily. This will protect the operation, enabling the business to continue and the staff to be paid. No matter what happens, you will be leaving a legacy for the generations to come, and a business LPA will enable you to do this.

Deputyship Order: If someone has fallen very ill and lost capacity, there may be the need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. Normal Deputyship applications take between six to 12 months and the current situation will increase that delay. However, urgent Deputyship applications can be made for health and care decisions. To avoid this option (which is more time consuming and costly than an LPA), make an LPA today.

Booking essential as tips reopen A TRIP to the tip could soon be possible again, but Lincolnshire County Council has warned household recycling centres will be managed in a different way.

Social distancing measures will be in place for the public and staff and the amount of people and cars going on site at any one time will be controlled.

Residents must book a time slot, which will be released shortly, and will be only able to go on site if they have a confirmed booking.

Initially only garden waste and wood will be accepted before other types of waste are introduced.

No vans, pickups or trailers will be allowed on site and users must be able to unload and carry your waste to the containers.

If you are a disabled driver/blue badge holder, please bring someone with you to unload your waste. Due to social distancing rules, staff will not be able to assist in unloading from your car or putting it into the containers.

Sites will be regularly cleaned and disinfected.

ID and proof of an address in the county will be needed (driving licence).

Eddy Poll, executive councillor for waste and recycling said: “I know it’s been frustrating having the sites closed for almost six weeks and we know many residents have excess waste to dispose of.

“We’re introducing a new booking system so we can safely manage the numbers of people into and out of the sites,

quantities and operate within the government’s social distancing guidelines.

“Many residents have been in touch about their garden waste, so with this in mind, we will be open for green waste and wood first.

Again, I know many residents will have other waste to dispose of and we are working hard to see how we can accept these in a safe manner.

“We are grateful for your patience, and by working together we can safely restore this much needed service.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

Getting back to business

BY JAMEs PINChBECK, MARKEtING PARtNER AT the time of writing we are in week five of lockdown with just under three weeks to go to the end of the second official period.

The last month or so has been focused on taking steps to manage business in a state of lockdown. For most, the impact has been a significant reduction, if not a total loss of revenue The exception appears to be those that have been able to adapt or offer services or products online.

In these unprecedented times it is unlikely that many business leaders have experience of dealing with such a situation. Economic downturns, recessions and even the financial crisis, which was more than ten years ago, may help people to manage the situation, but we are still aeons away from learning the lessons the current crisis is teaching us.

We have turned to the government for leadership, intervention and support to look after our health and wellbeing and also economic prosperity and individual livelihoods.

It has introduced measures and financial support to safeguard people’s jobs as well as the businesses and organisations they work for. Schemes such as the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), the Self Employed Income Support Scheme, the Coronavirus Business Interruption Scheme and others have been rolled out quickly to attempt to meet the shortfalls in business and personal finance the pandemic has created.

The last few weeks have undoubtedly seen most businesses focused on a mix of looking at possible ways of continuing some form of business activity, through getting to grips with various measures of support available to them.

The challenges for the Boss The launch of the claims process for the CJRS and the receipt of payments for furloughed workers will no doubt be appreciated by employers and should help to protect jobs.

We are now reaching a stage where we need to consider how businesses might transition from lockdown to a sense of normality, or what some are calling the new norm. It is unlikely we will see a wholesale return to work for the entire working population.. It is more likely to be an easing of the lockdown and a transition based on controlling the risk to avoid further outbreaks or a second wave of the virus.

All indications suggest that some form of distancing measures are likely to be in place for some time until a vaccine or proven treatments are widely available. It is vital to consider at what stage and in what form businesses may start to come out of lockdown.

Regardless of the timescale, we will all have to consider both the short term and longer-term impact in trying to recapture some normality. We will need to consider myriad factors here, including the workforce, finances, supply chains, customers and any remaining restrictions relating to operations imposed around managing COVID-19.

Getting employees back to work More than 70% of the UK’s workforce is currently furloughed and many have been away from work for much longer than annual leave, so will need to re-adjust to work and get back up to speed.

The impact of COVID-19 on the business and its operation will need to be considered.

If an organisation has managed its staff through a combination of both furlough and reduced working hours it may need to look at the potentially negative consequence on staff morale. This can be exacerbated if returning employers are phased back as opposed to brought back all at once.

There will be the financial impact of employees transferring from furlough rates, back to their full pay, but working practices required to deal with the situation may have led to employees’ roles changing. They may need to reskill or change roles, or face losing their jobs as roles become redundant.

These changes may also trigger feelings of unrest and review among some workers, so even if they have returned they could be looking at exploring other avenues.
