JOURNEY TO THE SEED Alejandra Aguado

The work of Amadeo Azar seems to develop as a kind of travel towards the seed. An intimate adventure exploring the depths of his interest in the forms of Modernity, guided by the almost romantic enchantment with which he dives into his working process as an artist, a painter. From this apparently incompatible combination of theme and method emerges a body of work at the same time forceful and delicate, in which the Constructivist esthetic, the anonymous, pragmatic, absolute and expansive shapes of modernity unfold into self-reflexive images loaded with intent and intimacy, where history becomes the representation of a dystopian fiction.

Azar’s preferred media is watercolor, and his point of departure is, usually, reproduction. This means for him not only a realistic rendering of works of art or architecture —those which constructed the idea of Modernity during the first half of the XX Century, from Kazimir Malevich’s paintings and Naum Gabo’s sculptures to World Fairs’ pavilions and workmen’s clubs— but an exercise in creating from scratch, in re-producing new images based on interventions on existing, well known ones, in order to reincarnate the spirit and form of Modernists projects, their statements and teleologies.

We encounter recognizable works which belong to the history of international architecture and art, although framed with slanted edges or in polygonal shapes, or deconstructed in multiple fragments, their forms bursting, being overlapped by invisible structures made of gold or luminescent ink. Color planes, shapes which exist independent of any exact reference, imagined monuments have become part of Azar’s vocabulary. The challenge here is to retrace the the steps of Konstantin Melnicov, Francisco Salamone, Vladimir Tatlin, Raúl Loza or Gyula Kosice, melting European and Argentinean avant-garde moments as if one, soaking up not only the forms those early XX Century artists imagined but also their creative methods.

There is a dual operation at work, the desire to recreate a historical piece, on one hand, and to reinterpret geometric abstraction on the other. This dual intent is characteristic of the works Azar has made

in recent years, accomplishing a strange association of scale and mood, a peculiar combination of figuration and abstraction, the coexistence of diverse temporalities. We see in these works something that once was, as well as the path to something that is a viable artistic road today.

Document and revisitation of the past cohabit with the angular shapes —still compelling today— that Azar overlaps on them as a way to refer to the ideas about the future which were at the core of those early Modernist artistic projects, which longed to make the future present.

His refined drawings are sometimes interrupted by a strident note given by gold leafing or saturated colors against deep, somber backgrounds.

They are rendered in watercolor; the use of this fast, translucent, hazy medium which Azar masters with great subtlety and precision is key to suggest the idea of a romanticized past —an idea that the avant-gardists of early Modernism would have rejected—. A similar mood is invoked by the use of monochromatic palettes and the fact that depicted buildings are presented out of context, in a state of stillness, as if freed from the decay that time imposes on them, becoming classical landscapes, recognizable as what was once proposed as a paradigm and today has the weight of the historical and eternal.

If by following the path of abstraction opened up by the historical avantgarde movements of the first decades of the XX century, the Modern artist searched for pure invention and therefore for pure truth (Arte ConcretoInvención, Argentina’s native avant-garde movement, manifested itself to be against any imitative, figurative art through their motto: “No searching, no finding: inventing”), then Amadeo Azar’s work resumes the road towards illusion and reference through them. Even his most abstract works, such as his paintings based on Argentina’s Madí artist Raúl Lozza, or on Naum Gabo’s sculptures, his “Rayonist” photographs, or his color planes painted in watercolor are always images of images, representations of abstraction. They are never about movement, volume or color in space, but rather exquisite radiograms which make visible something for the viewer to consider. In these studies Azar penetrates into the intimacy of those early artworks and into their process of

invention in order to re-present them in their materiality, and why not, their spirituality, their historical being.

Phantasmagorical, Azar’s watercolor paintings —some of them photographed and printed on the same watercolor paper as the painted images— make their luminescence appear eternal. In them abstraction has become a reflexion of itself, its own illusion. With a degree of discomfiture, Azar’s works ask if abstraction —that trophy won by the early avant-garde movements— can ever regain its pure and nonrepresentational nature, can ever cease to refer to a past time and place, if it can ever reconsider that its legacy has populated the world with objects and images which now Azar reproduces in the form of mirages.

Azar’s work does not lack disenchantment. Some of his earlier pieces contain phrases such as “necesito algo en qué creer” (“I need something to believe in”), “monopolio”, “time to pretend”, words that foreground the dis-articulation and emptying of the Modernist discourse which unfolded as the XX Century progressed. These early watercolors present us with scenes of adolescent languor and oscillate between vandalism and apathy, desperation and impertinence. They are staged in urban and suburban settings, they are images at the same time violent and melancholic, as if a brutal crime had been committed inside an Edward Hopper painting. Accidents, robberies, loneliness, torture or submission depict a society that has arrived at a dead end, at the threshold of a situation where there is nothing to loose and nothing to believe in.

Nevertheless we may suspect that those early portraits of an era of profound social and political disenchantment were the starting point for revisiting the art production of a time considered to have failed in attaining its goals, yet that this same act of re-visitation allowed Azar to start imagining, once again.

Azar, a South American artist of the XXI Century, carries on his research into historical artworks from a space and time far removed from the social and cultural spirit of reconstruction which generated the Modernist moment. This is precisely the reason why his work —through

his choice of processes, materials and tools— foregrounds the way in which information about Modernity was consumed and re-appropriated in the periphery: through postcards, books, documentaries; departing from the copy, from the copy of the copy and from local reinterpretation.

Reproduction, the new original, which was used for apprehending those objects and histories from afar, constitutes for Azar the natural method to study the past and a fertile ground for research.

Azar brings back to the history of painting the history of those avantgarde moments that sought to become independent from it. Focusing on this imaginary, his painting find ways to rediscover itself, as he utilizes his investigations on form as a process of reflexion, both on avant-garde moments as well as on his own work. The representational aspect of his paintings has not interfered with his ability for invention, to state it in the terms proposed by Concreto-Invención’s manifesto. While he looks back, Amadeo Azar’s project moves forward triggering new resonances and subtleties. It is a voyage backwards and into small details, as the one narrated by Alejo Carpentier in “Journey to the Seed”, which will continue until this universe penetrates into all of Amadeo Azar’s pores and blows new life into him. If Modernity aimed at redefining the collective sensibility, Azar’s works renew our current sensibility towards Modernity. Through the personal, meticulous, intimate treatment Azar gives to this project, once deemed to be objective and pure, he pays homage to it, retracing its steps with much of his own delicacy.

EL VIAJE A LA SEMILLA Alejandra Aguado

La obra de Amadeo Azar parece ir desarrollándose como un viaje a la semilla.

Como una aventura infinita e íntima hacia lo profundo de su interés por las formas de la modernidad guiada por el encantamiento casi romántico con el que se entrega a su trabajo de artista, fundamentalmente de pintor.

De esta combinación aparentemente incompatible de tema y método -aquí convive la imagen de la voluntad creadora y universal con el intimismo de un artista puntilloso que se regocija en el trabajo de taller-, resulta una obra a la vez delicada y contundente en el que la estética constructivista, las formas anónimas y prácticas, absolutas y expansivas de la modernidad, se despliegan en imágenes auto-reflexivas, cargadas de ánimo y de gran intimidad, donde la historia se vuelve por momentos la representación de una ficción distópica.

El medio privilegiado de Azar es la acuarela y su punto de partida, incluso cuando ensaya otras técnicas, es la reproducción. Ésta no sólo se da, sin embargo, como copia naturalista de las obras artísticas o arquitectónicas que él decide pintar en monocromos -aquéllas que construyeron la idea de modernidad en la primera mitad del siglo XX, desde pinturas de Kazimir Malevich y esculturas de Naum Gabo a pabellones de ferias internacionales y clubes de obreros-, sino también como el ejercicio de crear, de cero y otra vez, de re-producir, imágenes nuevas o intervenciones en las imágenes conocidas que encarnen por sí mismas el espíritu y las formas de los proyectos modernos, sus postulados o puntos de llegada. Así, sus trabajos nos enfrentan por un lado con obras reconocibles de la historia de la arquitectura y del arte internacional pero éstas pueden presentarse también en nuevos marcos recortados y poligonales, ser deconstruidas en múltiples fragmentos, sus formas estallan, recobrando dinamismo, o dibujos lineales describen sobre ellas estructuras invisibles. Plenos de color, formas independientes de toda referencia exacta, incluso monumentos inventados son parte de su enciclopédico catálogo. Aparentemente, el desafío aquí consiste en transitar el camino de la figuración a la abstracción en la propia obra, como si, fruto de la dedicación de Azar a su tema y a sus propios medios -su voluntad de estudiar lo ajeno mientras intenta también llevar a la acuarela o al papel, por ejemplo, siempre un poco más allá-, se haya vuelto natural en él su apropiación de la vanguardia, en especial de las ideas del arte concreto

y de la abstracción geométrica. Su estudio minucioso de las obras que conforman su mundo de interés -creaciones de los arquitectos Konstantin Melnikov o Francisco Salamone, de artistas como Vladimir Tatlin, Raúl Lozza o Gyula Kosice, entre otros- parece haberle transfundido no sólo la capacidad para retratar fielmente sus trabajos sino también el método de la búsqueda inventiva, que lo lleva a producir formas nuevas así como a visualizar geometrías ocultas en formas ya existentes.

Esta doble operación -la de, por un lado, recrear para el espectador la obra histórica y, por el otro, la de reinterpretar la abstracción geométrica en el mismo trabajo- es la que ha definido la obra de Azar de los últimos años, logrando en cada pieza una extraña asociación de escalas y de ánimos, esa peculiar combinación entre abstracción y figuración y una convivencia entre distintas temporalidades: vemos en ellas la imagen de algo que fue en tándem con formas nuevas que se presentan como un camino artístico posible hoy.

En sus piezas, el documento y la mirada al pasado confluyen con la potencia que todavía conservan las imágenes abstractas angulosas y de corte preciso que Azar dibuja o recorta sobre las primeras para sugerir progreso científico, la idea de futuro y de lo elevado, tan elementales en la fundamentación de estas propuestas que buscaban hacer del futuro, presente. Sin embargo, más allá de que estos finísimos dibujos conservan algo de su estridencia original a través del uso del dorado o de colores saturados que contrastan con las paletas más sombrías de la imagen de fondo, por lo general resuelta en acuarela, el uso de este medio veloz, difuso y transparente que Azar maneja con delicadeza y virtuosismo, es clave para sugerir lo pasado y lo romántico -algo que las mismas vanguardias hubieran repudiado-. Lo mismo inspira la utilización del mono tono y el hecho de que las obras, los monumentos o los edificios representados se vean descontextualizados y permanezcan así como formulaciones libres del deterioro que ha traído el tiempo, volviéndose vistas clásicas, reconocibles como aquello que se propuso como modelo y tiene hoy el valor de lo histórico y eterno.

Si a partir del camino abierto por la abstracción en los primeros años del siglo XX, el artista moderno intensificó su búsqueda por obras que signifiquen la pura invención y, por ende, la pura verdad (el Arte Concreto-Invención se

declaraba contra un arte imitativo de las formas de la realidad promulgando “Ni buscar ni encontrar: inventar”), el trabajo de Azar retoma, a través de ellas, el camino de la ilusión y la referencialidad. Incluso en sus piezas más abstractas, en sus pinturas de obras de Raúl Lozza, de esculturas de Naum Gabo, en sus fotografías rayonistas, en sus plenos de acuarela, sus obras son imágenes de imágenes, representación de la abstracción. En ninguno de los casos se presenta estrictamente el movimiento, el volumen o el color irrumpiendo en el espacio, sino que estas imágenes se proponen como radiografías exquisitas que traen a la vista algo para su reconocimiento. Con estos estudios, Azar penetra en la intimidad de una obra y en su proceso de invención para representarla en toda su materialidad y, por qué no, en su espiritualidad, en su ser histórico. Fantasmales, las pinturas logradas -algunas incluso fotocopiadas o fotografiadas e impresas sobre el mismo tipo de papel sobre el que él pinta- eternizan su luminosidad. La abstracción se ha vuelto en ellas, más que nunca, reflejo de sí misma, su propia ilusión.

Es así como, no sin turbación, su trabajo cuestiona si la abstracción, esta síntesis plástica que fue la batalla ganada de la vanguardia, podrá alguna vez recuperar su naturaleza pura y no-representacional, dejar de referir a un espacio-tiempo pasado, ser consciencia de una propuesta anterior que no hubiera permitido que sus formas hayan pasado a poblar el mundo como objetos que ahora Azar reproduce como espejismos.

La obra de Azar no está libre de desencanto. Incluso en varios de sus trabajos pueden leerse frases como “necesito algo en qué creer”, “monopolio”, “time to pretend”, que ponen en primer plano la desarticulación y el vaciado que sufrió el discurso moderno avanzando el siglo. Sus primeras acuarelas, trabajos de hace poco más de diez años, presentan incluso escenas de languidez e indiferencia adolescente y otras que oscilan entre el vandalismo y la abulia, la desesperación y la desfachatez. Suceden en escenarios de interiores o exteriores suburbanos y son imágenes violentas pero melancólicas -como si un crimen irrumpiera en el fondo de un cuadro de Edward Hopperdonde robos, accidentes, tortura, abuso, soledad o sumisión, retratan a una sociedad en su punto muerto, en aquel umbral en el que no se tiene nada que perder ni nada en qué creer. Sin embargo, podemos sospechar que este retrato de la era del desencanto social y político fue el puntapié que le

permitió enfocarse en el origen de este proyecto que en estas pinturas se da por fracasado y que aparecía en ellas como fondo, hasta encontrar en él los recursos que le permitieran imaginar otra vez.

Este avance hacia lo histórico, por otro lado, para un pintor sudamericano y del siglo XXI, parece estar destinado a realizarse desde la periferia: desde un lugar lejano espacial y temporalmente del origen de estos proyectos de reconstrucción social y cultural. Probablemente por eso mismo su trabajo pone tan de manifiesto a través de sus herramientas y sus medios, de su propio lenguaje, la manera en que indefectiblemente se consumió la información en torno a la modernidad: desde el libro, la postal, el documental; a partir de la copia, de la copia de la copia y de la reinterpretación local. La reproducción, el nuevo original desde el que se aprenden estos objetos e historias, pasó a ser para Azar el método natural para el estudio del pasado y fértil campo de investigación. En su obra, incluso, y gracias a esta circunstancia, el arte que se había cantado no-artificial y que se volvió en el tiempo realidad simbólica, estrictamente mediada, ensaya liberarse de los principios que le impuso su propio manifiesto y emanciparse de ellos como pura evocación.

Azar reintegra la historia de esa vanguardia que promulgó la utilización de materiales nuevos -aquellos que construirían el mundo moderno- y que buscó incluso independizarse de la tradición artística, a la historia de la pintura.

Una pintura que encuentra, concentrándose en este imaginario, nuevas e infinitas maneras de redescubrirse a partir de un desarrollo envolvente que utiliza su propia aventura formal como proceso de reflexión, tanto de la vanguardia como del propio trabajo. Su propuesta “imitativa” no ha restringido su capacidad de invención y de progreso, por decirlo en términos de manifiesto. Mientras mira hacia atrás, el proyecto de Azar avanza en profundidad disparando nuevas resonancias y sutilezas. Es una especie de viaje en retroceso y hacia el detalle hasta que este universo, como narra Alejo Carpentier en “El viaje a la semilla”, le entre por todos los poros y le insufle nueva vida. Si la modernidad pretendía redefinir la sensibilidad colectiva, la obra de Azar renueva nuestra sensibilidad hacia ella. En el tratamiento personal, íntimo y minucioso que da a este proyecto que se cantó concreto y puro, lo homenajea andando sobre sus propios pasos con silencio y más de su propia delicadeza.

Obtained her MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Arts, London. She has held curatorial positions at Tate, London and Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires. She is currently Co-Director of Movil, a nonprofit art space in Buenos Aires and advisor to an important private collection.

Her writings include Land, Art: A Cultural Ecology Handbook (RSA, London); Ana Gallardo, Works 1999-2009 (Alberto SendrĂłs, Buenos Aires) and Jorge Macchi: Music Stands Still (SMAK, Ghent), as well as articles published in Flash Art and Untitled magazines.
