MAINE-ANJOU Headquarters

M. BLAKE NELSON EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Happy New Year! I hope that you and your crew have had a blessed holiday season. There are many things that we have to look forward to in 2024, starting with the Cattlemen’s Congress, National Western and Fort Worth Stock Shows. Participation will be extremely high and the anticipation for these events has everyone ready for the New Year! Although this is a very busy time, I always try to find some time for reflection and looking ahead to the new year. 2023 has been exciting for the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) with record setting sales, shows and participation. As breeders, you are the driving force in this surge that we are experiencing. I am very thankful for the members and staff that I get to work with every day, I feel that we have some of the best in the business. We have always had good cattle, but the quantity of quality, useful cattle has grown greater every year that I have been working with you. The industry is taking note and we must continue on this journey. As we look to the future, a couple of key goals that our staff would like to focus on for 2024. First, increase industry acceptability and improve perception of Maine-Anjou.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 10

Commercial Buyer Perception - our cattle often get pigeon-holed as “only” club calves and that gives the buyers a chance to discount us at market. Todays MaineAnjou cattle are right for the beef industry and we have to educate and show how our genetics can perform in the feedlot and on the rail. We encourage you to be mindful of how you market Maine-Anjou and we will attempt educating the sale outlets on what the Modern Maine-Anjou is and can do. The feedlot operators love our cattle and they do extremely well on the rail, but the points in between are where we have to improve our name. We can do this! Adopt Technology - we as a breed must do better utilizing the tools that are available for cattlemen today. DNA and Genomics is one place that we can grow and have more information available, to not only utilize for selection in our herds, but also for potential buyers (They expect this information and in order to gain market share we need to provide it). We have reasonably priced genomic tests that are available and if you have any questions on how to implement this in your herd, please visit with Rylee or Josh. We recommend young herd sires, donors, and high use herd bulls as great places to start. So, I say to you as breeders, great work and please stay the course, I feel that we are on the correct path. With the use of progressive genetics, leveraging science and genomics, and ramping up your local marketing,

these are solid ingredients needed to reach our destination. Traveling throughout the country there are so many people that are recognizing the Modern Maine-Anjou and what it can bring to the industry. January is a busy month for Maine-Anjou! We hope you will consider joining us at one of the three AMAA events held this month. First on the list will be Oklahoma City, Okla., Cattlemen’s Congress, January 4th-7th and the Bright Lights Sale. Next up we head to Denver, Colo., for the National Western, January 11-13, and the Power In the Pens Sale. We round out the month at the Fort Worth Stock Show on January 28th. For more information on all these events, please check out pages 26, 27 and 44, our Facebook page or the maine-anjou.org website. As always, if we can assist you in anyway please let us know. Thank you for a great year at AMAA and we hope to see you down the road! Take care, Blake MAINE-ANJOU - Power without Sacrifice!

JOSHUA CRIBBS

DIRECTOR OF PROMOTION & BREED ADVANCEMENT

It’s that time of year; time for the holidays and family. In some parts of the country, it’s also the end of fall calving and time to shift toward getting ready for the arrival of spring babies. During this time of year, unless you have winter grazing planted, you’re more than likely going through a stage of forage that is less than ideal. Whether your cattle are mid-gestation or coming into the start of peak lactation, it’s important to have available the nutrients needed to maximize production. It’s important to note, mineral isn’t seasonal - it’s needed all 365 days of the year. There is a need for extra supplementation, especially when most of the diet for running cows is lower quality forage. The correct protein and mineral supplementation can help cattle to better utilize available feed resources and aid in digestion. Aided digestion in turn allows for larger available nutrient levels that can be allocated to condition headed into calving and then lactation. Most producers become more conscious of calving difficulty, as the season nears. While we don’t intentionally reduce calories JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 12

during this time, we certainly don’t push cows before calving. When it comes to cow nutrition, the 60 days prior to calving is the most crucial for applying enough reserve to benefit body condition that will inevitability impact breeding season. One of the biggest contributors of anestrus, during the breeding season, is the combination of cattle being in lactation along with not having enough condition to bring on estrus. Postpartum interval, in days, is directly correlated to body condition scores, according to an article released by the University of Nebraska. Below is the table found within that article. Table 1 - Effect of Body Condition Score (BCS) at parturition on Postpartum Interval (PPI) BCS PPI, days 3 88.5 4 69.7 5 59.4 6 51.7 7 30.6 Adapted from Houghton et al., 1990

It’s imperative that we are always focused on the cow in production, as well as the stage she is in. As we head to the end of this year and the beginning of the next, I certainly want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are looking forward to the Bright Lights and Power in the Pens Sales and the quality that is always represented within the pages of the catalogs for both events. As always, if we can be of any service, please feel free to reach out! It’s Powerful. It’s Progressive. It’s Modern Maine-Anjou!

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events UPDATED MEMBERSHIP FEES

The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Board of Directors held its spring meeting in April. Discussion was held regarding rising costs and how it has affected the day-to-day operations. The AMAA has managed to keep registration rates the same for nearly ten years. Rather than increasing registration fees, the motion was made to increase the adult membership rates to $150. Those that paid 2023 dues prior to July 1, 2023 will be assessed a $50 service fee. AMAA staff has started the billing process. Please return the payment within 30 days of the invoice date. Any account renewed or applied for after July 1, 2023 will pay the new adult membership rate. Starting January 1, 2024 all adult memberships/dues will be $150. The board also motioned to raise the junior memberships from $25 to $50 starting January 1, 2024. 2024 Adult dues have increased from $100 to $150 (includes magazine) 2024 Junior dues have increased from $25 to $50 (Magazine can be ordered for an additional $40) Note: Dues must be paid to register, transfer, sell or show cattle. By increasing these fees, the AMAA will be able to continue offering the same quality service the membership is used to receiving while also mitigating the rising operating costs the AMAA has faced. MAPP ENROLLMENT DEADLINE Herd reporting (MAPP) inventories were due December 15, 2023. EPDs will not be provided unless inventories are completed. Please check your account to ensure that your enrollment has been completed and 2024 dues are paid. You will log into your online account and click on “MAPP Inventory” on the left side tool bar. You will then click the tab that says “Assessment Age”. Select the “2024” tab to the left of each animal that will be bred to calve in 2024. You will not see any foundation or pedigreed animals from other associations on this listing. Any Maine-Anjou , MaineTainer or Maine Angus females that were born prior to March 1, 2023 will be listed under the “Optional Females” tab. Animals to be sold in a sale for 2024 will not need to be enrolled. Please do not dispose of these animals unless you have sold them without papers. It is recommended that you pay 2024 dues when submitting your inventories. INVOICE AND STATMENT HISTORY: Log into your Digital Beef Account. Under the profile information are tabs that run right to left across the screen, click on “Account”. You may view your current and past invoices JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 28

by selecting “Show Invoice History”. The information listed under invoice history are notes when work is held for payment, held for testing and when work was mailed. If you click “Download Work Detail” in red on the right side of the screen, it will provide your current fees charged. DETAILED STATEMENT: A Detailed Statement can be created with a date range. This is a good tool to use for tax purposes. DONOR INVENTORY: When cows are flushed from your herd, you may log the dates and count of inventory for each Donor. • From the left side tool bar select “Breeding” and then click on “Embryo Inventory”. • Add new Embryo • Enter the registration numbers of the dam and sire of the donor flushed. • Enter Flush Date • Click on “Find these” • Enter quantity, Tank and Canister and then click “Save Inventory”.

• When selling your inventory click on “Breeding”. • Select “Embryo Transfer”. • Click on Embryo Inventory in red. • Click on the Blue Link that says “Record Sale”. • Enter in how many embryos sold. • Enter the buyer member number and date sold. • Transfer embryos to buyer. INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION AND PERFORMANCE DATA: If work is submitted for weaning and yearling, but not completed, AMAA will delete the entry within three business days and it will need to be added once the data can be provided. AMAA will also delete registrations that have incomplete fields such as blank dams, sires, birthdates, names, tattoos or not owners of the dam that is entered within two weeks. The exception would be entries for registration that are pending due to testing. Please be aware that once a registration has been entered and the “Validate” button is selected, it goes to the registrar to be completed, invoiced and closed. AMAA will make an attempt to contact you prior to deleting the entry via email.

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events

NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou. org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program. MEMBERSHIP ACCOUNTS It is the AMAA policy to only share account information with those authorized on an active account, no matter the age of the account holder. The account holder must provide written permission to add a person(s) to their account to transfer and register on their behalf. Anyone that is not authorized on an account will not be provided passwords or invoice information no matter the age or relation to the account holder. The account holder is the only one that can call or e-mail the AMAA directly to remove or add any person(s) to/from their account. Any authorized person on the account can register, transfer, obtain or change passwords once they are on the account. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET

calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Rylee at rylee@ amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner. REGISTRATIONS: The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers

or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. Block purchases must be pre-paid for prior to registering. If you are interested in purchasing a block, please contact us at 816-431-9950 Ext. 2. FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees. ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events

RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number. Once the animal has been tested the registration will be completed at the regular rate based on the animals age at the time the test is completed. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks. MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: Digital Beef will automatically convert cow/ heifer registrations to Maine-Angus if they qualify. All Maine-Angus bulls applied for will be reviewed by the registrar prior to converting to MaineAngus. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 30

have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show. MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine-Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test. • A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test. MAINE ANGUS COLOR REQUIREMENTS: • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. • Starting Jan. 1, 2019 all animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers.

OTHER AMAA UPDATES: Please make sure to update any change in address, phone numbers or e-mails with the AMAA by e-mailing us at maine@amaapc.com, or by logging into your online account. MAINE-ANJOU CATTLE FOR SALE: Looking for cattle to purchase or consign? Do not forget to check out our consignment sale list located at the top of the Digital Beef Cattle search screen called “Maine-Anjou Cattle for Sale”. Active breeders may use this tool at any time to consign animals as long as you have a login for Digital Beef. NATIONAL SHOWS Anyone showing in a junior or open class at the national level must be an active member with the AMAA or American Maine-Anjou Junior Association (AJMAA). Junior members exhibiting at these shows must be the sole owner of the animal they are showing. DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or nonregistered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. To submit a sample through the association, please follow the DNA request

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events

instructions on our website, maine-anjou. org, under the Genetics/Testing tab. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable. DNA REMINDERS Winter Sale Season is approaching and extended test times are expected. Please be aware that the Geneseek lab turnaround time is approximately 3-4 weeks on defect testing. Turnaround times are longer for multiple tests on one sample. Please be prepared when preparing for spring sales and shows that testing will take longer than normal. We would encourage you to start ordering the testing you need as soon as possible. For assistance with ordering please email Rylee at rylee@amaapc.com. • NEW All samples turned in on a hair card will be charged an additional $5 per sample starting January 1, 2022. • NEW The Panel #3 has dropped to $95 and this is the most inclusive test offered through AMAA. With this test you will receive 100 thousand DNA markers which includes parentage as well as genomics. The panel also includes several defect tests including TH and PHA. This is the recommended choice for those wishing to improve their herd. • AMAA will accept blood cards, tissue sampling units (TSU), semen straws or hair cards. • All bulls born after January 1, 2014 must be TH and PHA free by test or pedigree in order to register. If a bull is found to be a carrier, he

can register as a foundation or performance bull only, but all progeny will have to test free of that defect in order to register. Foundation bulls will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring. • All A.I. sires regardless of breed and/or commercial, must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering any progeny. • All donor dams must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering their ET calves. If a donor is dead before a sample was procured, you must DNA, TH and PHA test all ET calves in order to register them. NEOGEN UPDATED PROCEDURES The Neogen DNA lab has implemented new procedures regarding on hold orders. Samples must now be submitted to the lab within 30 days from the time of the order. Orders that are not received within 30 days will be deleted from their system. Samples that are received after the 30 days will experience delays in testing due to order recreation. It is recommended not to order the DNA testing until you have a sample procured and ready to submit. For DNA questions please contact Rylee Barber at Rylee@amaapc.com. NONPAID ACCOUNTS: Any unpaid accounts 30 days past due will

receive a finance charge. Please make sure to pay for your registration work at the time of entry to avoid possible finance charges. Any unpaid work will be deleted if not paid within 90 days. SELLERS: All sellers must have dues paid in order to transfer animals. The seller must sign in to authorize the sale of the animal(s). The buyer’s name, address and date of sale must be filled out. Please make sure that the date of sale is true and correct to avoid registration errors for the buyer in the future. To avoid higher transfer fees it is recommended that the seller send the transfer with payment as soon as possible. If you are not sure if your dues have been paid, please contact us prior to sending in transfers.

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events

AMAA ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES Annual dues must be paid by Dec. 31, 2023. You must be an active member of the AMAA to register and transfer cattle.

ADULT MEMBERSHIP: $150 JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP: $25 The adult membership dues include a subscription to the Voice. Enclose an additional $40 to get the Voice first class.

UPDATED MEMBERSHIP FEES

By increasing these fees, the AMAA will be able to continue offering the same quality service the membership is used to receiving while also mitigating the rising operating costs the AMAA has faced. Membership renewal notices will be mailed starting in October.

**NOTE - Junior & Adult dues must be current to exhibit at any of the five national shows American Royal, North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE), Cattlemen’s Congress, National Western Stock Show & Fort Worth**

2024 MAPP OPEN ENROLLMENT

Herd reporting (MAPP) inventories were due December 15, 2023. EPDs will not be provided unless inventories are completed. Please check your account to ensure that your enrollment has been completed and 2024 dues are paid.

O’HARA LAND & CATTLE INDUCTED INTO THE AMERICAN MAINE-ANJOU ASSOCIATION HERITAGE ROAD HALL OF FAME Congratulations to Mike O’Hara, O’Hara Land & Cattle as the newest inductee to the prestigious, American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Heritage Road Hall of Fame. If you have ever found yourself in Fort Benton, Montana, you know it’s a picturesque western landscape, with valleys that lead to flat plains of farm ground and cattle range as far as the eye can see. In the very far north central corner of the state, nearly to Canada, is the home of the O’Hara family. In 1971, Mike O’Hara, cattleman and agriculturist, was in search of a breed to change

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 44

the projection of the program and further establish the O’Hara Land and Cattle brand. It was then that he turned to Maine-Anjou and began utilizing these genetics as he saw great value in the breed’s future and a huge opportunity to utilize Maine-Anjou genetics in a crossbred setting, especially with British influenced cattle. The O’Hara’s have since created a strong and unique brand, focusing on the production of foundation females and performance-oriented bulls with an emphasis on the characteristics it takes for cattle to run

and be productive in the sometimes harsh Montana ranching conditions. Mike has been a strong supporter of Maine-Anjou and the AMAA for more than 50 years, participating in numerous association sponsored research projects, as well as serving diligently as a American Maine-Anjou Association Board of Director with a strong focus on Breed Improvement and moving Maine-Anjou in the right direction. Congratulations to Mike and the O’Hara family on this distinguished honor!

Hi everyone! My name is Kendra Folkerts, and I am currently serving the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) as a Region 2 Director. I grew up in Southwest Minnesota on my family’s operation, Eastview Maines. My dad, mom, siblings, and I all work together and run around 120 Maine and Maine-influenced cows. I am so thankful that my parents and siblings understand and support my position on the junior board. I attend South Dakota State University where I am currently double majoring in Dairy Manufacturing and Ag Communications. I am employed at the Davis Dairy Plant on campus where we make the famous SDSU Ice Cream and cheese. Back in July, the MAINE conference was held in Fort Collins, Colo. We listened to a presentation by Temple Grandin, went to Blind Badger Ranch, and even got to go white water rafting! MAINE is definitely a highlight of the summer, so be on the look out for information about MAINE 2024, which is soon to come! With major season wrapping up, it’s time to switch gears towards junior national! I think it’s safe to say that the junior national is the best week of the summer, and if you ask my family, the best week of the whole year. The theme for this year is “Keepin’ It Reel”, and on behalf of my fellow junior board members, we can’t wait!

The past year and a half that I have been on the board has truly been the best experience! I have gotten to go to tons of cool places and meet amazing people. The other junior board members have become some of my closest friends, and I am so thankful that I am able to serve such a great association with them right by my side. Being part of the “Maine Family” has always been my favorite part of being on the board. I hope to leave an impact on the juniors by reminding them that at the end of the day, their Maine family will always be there! Make sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming deadlines and announcements regarding the online sale, junior national, and MAINE Event! I hope to see you at future Maine-Anjou events! Happy New Year!

THE

IMPORTANCE

OF MINERAL SUPPLEMENTATION by Dr. Jon DeClerck, Technical Consultant Purina Animal Nutrition

In today’s competitive environment, standing still is the same as moving backwards. Producers spend countless hours, researching pedigrees and evaluating mating decisions, with the understanding that building better cattle is a continuous process. Nutrition plays a critical role in this pursuit of progression, by helping cattle express their maximum genetic potential. In my tenure as a consultant, I’ve noticed that vitamins and minerals are often overlooked, as many producers either don’t provide supplementation or cut corners with a cheap/ inefficient product. With the cost of raising elite cattle continuing to rise, what is a few more sellable calves’ worth to your bottom line? Introduction: How do Minerals Affect Production I often hear complaints concerning the price of a high-quality mineral program. But considering that vitamins and minerals are a precursor to animal performance, it is far more expensive not to have a program at all. Minerals facilitate nearly every process JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 48

or reaction occurring in the body, so it is not surprising proper supplementation commonly leads to a 2:1 return on investment via improved conception rates, health, and animal gain. 1. Reproduction: Deficiencies in vitamins and minerals can lead to irregular estrus cycles, lower conception rates, early embryonic death, and increased calving intervals. I’ve been fortunate to worked with elite producers and embryo transfer clinicians/companies alike, who have observed that feeding an elevated chelated trace mineral pack (especially copper and zinc) can lead to profound effects on transfer day. 2. Fetal Programing: With infant health in mind, prenatal vitamins (that also have minerals) is among the first recommendation a doctor makes… and cattle are no different. Newborn calf health is directly influenced by the nutritional status of their mothers (“passive immunity”). Proper supplementation not only improves calf vigor but ensures fetal development.

A recent study conducted by North Dakota State University found mineral supplementation of gestating cows had a favorable impact on a fetus’ placenta, blood vessels, organs, muscle tissue, and gene expression, leading to better nutrient absorption, and healthier, heavier muscled calves that weaned off with a 40-pound advantage. 3. Immune Function: Perhaps a silver lining of covid is we all learned of the importance of zinc in reducing sickness and bolstering immune response to viruses. In addition, vitamins A, D, and E, as well as selenium and copper, promote immune competency, reducing the susceptibility to diseases and promoting health and ultimate animal gain. 4. Performance/Growth: Not only does mineral supplementation improve growth rates via fetal programing and immune function, but it also increases feed intake and digestion leading to higher feed efficiency, weight gain, and muscle mass.

Why Mineral Needs to be Supplemented Year Round Even the best forages (grass/hay) are deficient in many of the 13 minerals essential to production success. For instance, zinc and copper are deficient in nearly all forages, while phosphorus levels are typically insufficient 10 months out of the year. Phosphorus is often referred to as the master mineral as it is combined with glucose to make “ATP”, which is a fuel source for cells in the body. Meaning phosphorus is required for all cattle to walk, graze, breathe or simply stay alive. Additionally, each species of grass has a different composition of minerals, which changes as the plant matures. Like humans, cattle have different preferences for certain forages, and each native pasture features numerous different types of grasses/plants, and naturally not all cattle will eat the same distribution. Meaning the only way to guarantee a cow is receiving the appropriate level of vitamins and minerals is by feeding a high-quality mineral supplement. Choosing a Mineral Program When choosing a mineral program, don’t

solely focus on the guaranteed analysis on the product label. In many cases, more is not necessarily better. Minerals are interrelated and frequently compete against one another for absorption. Take for instance, grass tetany which we know is caused by a lack of magnesium absorption. Even though lush green grasses often have proficient levels of magnesium, its absorption is commonly blocked by elevated concentrations of potassium and nitrogen. Thus, the proper balance (or ratio’s) of minerals is often more important than the total concentration of any single mineral. Additionally, not all sources of minerals are digested equally. Oxides are virtually unavailable to the animal, chlorides and sulfates are absorbed better, while hydroxy and organics/chelated minerals are usually the best. To save on cost, many manufactures use oxide formulations, which significantly diminishes animal performance. Minerals are vital to enhancing performance at every level in the production cycle which underscores the need for consistent daily intake. Meaning that simply having a mineral supplement in a feeder isn’t enough,

cattle must eat the supplement to bolster performance. For producers confronting intake issues, a proven remedy has been the use of mineral tubs. As the enhanced taste and palatability of the molasses base tub result in consistent cattle consumption. Conclusion The adoption of advanced reproductive technologies has fueled rapid genetic progression and fierce competition. Given the time and resources that are required to produce elite genetics, providing a highquality year-round mineral supplement is an absolute must. In many instances investing a couple more cents per cow a day, can lead to thousands of dollars. There is no magic bullet that can combat all the various challenges that arise in the diverse environments across the country but consider mineral as your “ounce of prevention”. Think of a vitamin/mineral supplement not only as a way of delivering nutrition, but as a tool that can proactively address costly health and production issues.

Dr. Jon DeClerck is a Technical Consultant for Purina Animal Nutrition and resides in College Station, Texas. He grew up on a cattle operation in Illinois and attended Texas A&M for his bachelor’s degree and completed his graduate education at Texas Tech University. Prior to Purina, Jon was the Judging Coach at Iowa State and Texas Tech Universities and is the first individual in history to judge on a National Champion Livestock Judging Team at all 3 levels of competition (4-H, Junior College, and Senior College), and to also coach a National Champion Livestock Judging Team at the University level.
