M. BLAKE NELSON EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Greetings, I hope that your spring is off to a good start. Bull sales and shows are in full swing now, and I know many of you are busy with spring calving. January was an excellent month for Maine-Anjou, with very successful sales at Oklahoma City and Denver and fantastic shows at the Cattlemen’s Congress, National Western, and Fort Worth Stock Shows. The interest in sales over the last few months has been excellent. At these sales, we are seeing some new faces and former breeders circling back to see what the Modern Maine-Anjou has to offer. As no surprise, you see that the animal’s quality and presentation are at the top of the list for most buyers, and then we see pedigree, performance, and data come in to set the market value of that animal for that day. I have also witnessed some breeders frustrated with a continued struggle to get the desired prices for their cattle. If you are one of these breeders, it may be time to note what has worked and, more importantly, what has not. Albert Einstein said it best with his definition of Insanity: “Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.” To progress, you must change the part of your program/marketing that needs to be fixed. That needed change is the introduction
of new genetics, better nutrition, or more intense marketing to hit on some pillars of a program. As breeders, we think about all these things, and some operations vary in what they emphasize or focus on when creating the next generation at their farm. This topic will forever be debatable, but Josh and I have spent much time studying and debating what the cattlemen who are interested in and buying Maine-Anjou genetics want. Unsurprisingly, we see phenotype as the first sort for most, then we see the paperwork come into play. We know that Maine-Anjou can more quickly enhance the physical attributes of an animal than any breed. Still, to get as much value for our seed stock as possible, we have to supply the predictability and facts that will enhance the value no matter what our customer desires. You often see Josh and me begging for data to be turned in on your herds so that we can build better genetic predictors through EPDs. The current genetics within our breed are as good as any breed when it comes to maximizing the cattle’s appearance and hoof performance. Still, as a breed, we need to strengthen our genetic estimates to appeal to a wider variety of cattlemen and increase the value of our product. Look at this from a marketing aspect; it is not any different than you going to buy a new one ton dually and you can get the base model that will probably get the job done, or you can get the King Ranch package that supplies convenience, comfort, and performance enhancements that you are willing to pay the extra for. In the seedstock cattle business, that is the base model (phenotype) and the enhanced package (Physical Presentation, High accuracy DNA EPDs, large amounts of data collected on offspring, outstanding individual weights
and scan data, etc...). I am going with this because we all need to put ourselves in the customer’s shoes. If we are the consumers, we can all get the best value. Cattlemen are now different and are okay with paying extra for their wants. You, the Maine breeders, have done a great job improving the breed’s physical attributes and creating market value. Now, let’s keep a common-sense approach and take the next step to increase the price ceiling for our animals. Last but not least, we have also seen the importance of promotion: Step 1, Presentation - A quality picture of the animal in good condition/weight and decent clip job are huge actions that must be priorities. Step 2, Advertising - Getting the word out that you are marketing a product has never been more affordable due to social media and technology. Step 3, Call for action - whether it is in your ad or you are talking to potential customers, do what it takes; if you don’t sell them a calf, somebody will. To this point, this year has proven that Maine -Anjou is back in the conversation within the industry. We must all do our part to deliver the goods and show them why they should utilize Maine in their programs. My dad used to say, “A blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and again.” It rings true in the bull-selling business. Bull buyers seek predictability, and they don’t just ask for it; they demand it. It’s easy to capture a buyer, but retaining them is an ongoing battle. Predictable, sustainable cattle are the only sure-fire way to keep them coming back. As quickly as January came and went, this Spring will be the same, and so onward goes this year’s bull selling season. I ended January at Nagel’s Annual Production Sale, where commercial clientele alongside purebred breeders demanded performing, High Maine genetics that held on to moderate calving ease. Maine-Anjou is a power breed. Nobody does muscle better than us with a black hide color. Muscle means money because it means red meat yield. I’m sure I will echo Blake’s words, but I can’t thank those breeders, bidders, and buyers enough for the impressive month of January we had as a breed. I look forward to the upcoming weeks of production sales that lie ahead and the month of April as Abbie and I welcome the fourth and final child to our family! A FAMILY AFFAIR A family operation that spans over 100 years, it is no surprise that Dexter and Maddix Small would follow in the footsteps of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Located in beautiful Southeast Kansas in the little town of Neodesha is MAD Cattle Company (MCC). MCC is a partnership between brothers MARCH/APRIL 2024 14
Maddix and Dexter Small and their parents, 2S Land & Cattle, Randy and Nicole Small. Currently, through the combined efforts of three generations, the Small Family runs around 350 spring-calving cows and 60 fall-calving cows. Their cow base is comprised of 340 commercial cows and 70 registered Limousin, Maine-Anjou, and Angus cows. An integral part of their
operation, Nicole’s parents, Lee & Marilyn Kidd, also have a commercial cow/calf operation. Until a few years ago, they ran several hundred stocker feeder steers. Due to the recent drought plaguing their area, they have stepped away from the stocker cattle to allow their family’s cow/calf operation to grow instead of disperse.
MAINE-ANJOU, THE RIGHT DIRECTION Growing up, Nicole was involved with the Limousin breed and thought it only natural that Dexter would follow in her footsteps. However, a suggestion to try Maine-Anjou from another 4-H mom shifted their trajectory. After a conversation with Dexter and Dale Wealand, Dexter was hooked on Maine-Anjou, purchasing his first Maine bull and female—certainly not his last. Another Maine-Anjou purchase in 2014 led to encouragement to participate and attend the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show that summer. That year, it was hosted in Springfield, Ill. Nicole recalls thinking it would be difficult for the boys to get away with the wheat harvest, but through the seller’s help, a neighbor willing to haul their heifer, and grandparents who have never said no, the boys headed to Springfield. Dexter has not missed a junior national since, with Maddix only sitting out one in 2020 due to health issues. Both Dexter and Maddix have referred to the MaineAnjou breed as a family. “I have attended other junior nationals, and they just do not have the same feel and don’t seem as oriented as the AJMAA is to make the next generation of breeders. I tell everyone that I have family all across the country, and most of them come from the Maine-Anjou breed,” says Maddix. BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION Throughout the years, the boys have continued building their herd and promoting their operation. In 2019, after years of purchasing Angus genetics from the Mill Brae ranch, the boys’ grandpa Lee purchased a group of Angus cows out of their dispersal. His intent was to buy the cows and start raising his own Angus bulls to use in their program. While Dexter and Maddix both appreciate the Angus breed, they were raised in a true commercial setting and deeply appreciate heterosis and its benefits to the commercial cowman. In 2022, Dexter attended the Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale in Oklahoma City, Okla., intending to buy a bull for his grandpa’s Angus cows. That year, they purchased BKMT Just a Dream, a ¾ Garth son, to put on Grandpa’s Angus, and just like Dexter thought it would, it worked better than they

expected. When the calves hit the ground, Grandpa Lee told Dexter they were special. Dexter was at school at the time, so he relied heavily on the rest of the family to send him updates on the new progeny. It became evident early on that three of the four bull calves stood out, and the notion of pen bulls at the Cattlemen’s Congress entered the Chat – even if Dad and Mom were reluctant to this idea. The calves had barely been weaned, but Dexter and Maddix were committed to bringing them into the barn and getting them ready for the big city lights. “I really didn’t think they would get them broke to lead, let alone get them ready to show,” said Nicole. While Dexter was away at college, Maddix persisted, and the bulls broke much easier than everyone thought they would. They got the bulls on feed and continued their efforts, mentioning that dad Randy had to grind a lot of extra feed and even found a neighbor willing to supply them with some silage to give them a little more nutritional advantage. Having never exhibited a pen before, the Smalls relied heavily on their Maine-Anjou family to help lead the way. Specifically, Dexter’s fellow American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) board member, Larahmy Blakley, was an integral part of the process. Through snap chats and face times, Maddix kept Dexter informed of the bull’s progress while he was at college. Bright Lights, Big City The hard work at home was done, and it was time to head to the City. With Dexter judging for West Texas A&M and unable to attend Cattlemen’s Congress, that would only leave Nicole and Maddix. Nicole tasked Dexter with finding a crew, and of course, he leaned on his Maine-Anjou and Be A Champ Camp Family to fill the call. The pen was ready, the help was lined up, and they were headed west. Each member of the family had a different goal for their project. “My goal as a mother was not to get drug across the fairgrounds, and I wanted to look like we and our group of teenagers had it all together, fake it till we make it,” said Nicole. “I wanted to make sure the bulls looked the part of a pen-of-three and exceed Dexter’s expectations, since he was seven hours away at college and trusted me with helping get this done,” says Maddix. “My honest hope for Congress was just to have a pen of bulls that truly showed what our program could accomplish. I wanted to show everyone that we aren’t just a couple of juniors stuck in the showring, but that we are here to stick it out as Maine-Anjou breeders,” said Dexter. they would want to take another one. Sorry, Randy. At the end of the day, the fruits of their labors were rewarded, and MAD Cattle Co. was named the Reserve Grand Champion MaineTainer Pen-of-Three bulls at the 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress. A feat many strive for and, in just their first year of exhibiting, were able to secure. Maine-Anjou, the Bright Future Family and goals have allowed Dexter and Maddix to excel in the Maine-Anjou
arena. Dexter has served on the AJMAA junior board where he was fortunate to make lifelong friends and Maddix intends to run for the board this summer. As they move forward in their endeavors, those two things will remain the grassroots of their program. The boys hope to continue to produce the most productive cattle possible but ultimately to produce Maine-Anjou cattle that work well in various production scenarios. As they build their genetic base, their goals for multi-trait selection, bull production,
and breed promotion will be considered. The Cattlemen’s Congress was their first example of how they plan to replicate genetics in their herd. With recent bull purchases and two fullblood females, the Small’s hope to generate fullblood and purebred cattle that will make the ideal terminal cross on their Angus based cows. One thing for certain, two things for sure, the Smalls are part of the Maine-Anjou family for the long haul, and we’re sure glad they’re here.

MEMBERSHIP SERVICES & MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION Memberships/Dues run from January to December of each year. 2024 Adult dues are $150 (includes magazine). 2024 Junior dues are $50 (Magazine can be ordered for an additional $40) Note: Dues must be paid to register, transfer, sell or show cattle. MAPP ENROLLMENT DEADLINE Any MAPP members that did not complete their MAPP inventories by December have been removed from the program. A $50 reactivation and MAPP fee(s) must be paid to re-enter the program. INVOICE AND STATMENT HISTORY: Log into your Digital Beef Account. Under the profile information are tabs that run right to left across the screen, click on “Account”. You may view your current and past invoices by selecting “Show Invoice History”. The information listed under invoice history are notes when work is held for payment, held for testing and when work was mailed. If you click “Download Work Detail” in red on the right side of the screen, it will provide your current fees charged. DETAILED STATEMENT: A Detailed Statement can be created with a date range. This is a good tool to use for tax purposes. DONOR INVENTORY: When cows are flushed from your herd, you may log the dates and count of inventory for each Donor. • From the left side tool bar select “Breeding” and then click on “Embryo Inventory”. • Add new Embryo • Enter the registration numbers of the dam and sire of the donor flushed. • Enter Flush Date MARCH/APRIL 2024 34
• Click on “Find these” • Enter quantity, Tank and Canister and then click “Save Inventory”. • When selling your inventory click on “Breeding”. • Select “Embryo Transfer”. • Click on Embryo Inventory in red. • Click on the Blue Link that says “Record Sale”. • Enter in how many embryos sold. • Enter the buyer member number and date sold. • Transfer embryos to buyer.
INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION AND PERFORMANCE DATA: If work is submitted for weaning and yearling, but not completed, AMAA will delete the entry within three business days and it will need to be added once the data can be provided. AMAA will also delete registrations that have incomplete fields such as blank dams, sires, birthdates, names, tattoos or not owners of the dam that is entered within two weeks. The exception would be entries for registration that are pending due to testing. Please be aware that once a registration has been entered and the “Validate” button is selected, it goes to the registrar to be completed, invoiced and closed. AMAA will make an attempt to contact you prior to deleting the entry via email. NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou. org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.
MEMBERSHIP ACCOUNTS It is the AMAA policy to only share account information with those authorized on an active account, no matter the age of the account holder. The account holder must provide written permission to add a person(s) to their account to transfer and register on their behalf. Anyone that is not authorized on an account will not be provided passwords or invoice information no matter the age or relation to the account holder. The account holder is the only one that can call or e-mail the AMAA directly to remove or add any person(s) to/from their account. Any authorized person on the account can register, transfer, obtain or change passwords once they are on the account. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Rylee at rylee@ amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. Block purchases must be pre-paid for prior to registering. FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered
at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.
ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed
by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number. Once the animal has been tested the registration will be completed at the regular rate based on the animals age at the time the test is completed. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks. MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: Digital Beef will automatically convert cow/ heifer registrations to Maine-Angus if they qualify. All Maine-Angus bulls applied for will be reviewed by the registrar prior to converting to MaineAngus. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show. MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine-Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8

registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test. • A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test.

MAINE ANGUS COLOR REQUIREMENTS: • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. • Starting Jan. 1, 2019 all animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers.
DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or nonregistered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. To submit a sample through the association, please follow the DNA request instructions on our website, maine-anjou. org, under the Genetics/Testing tab. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab.

MAINE-ANJOU CATTLE FOR SALE: Looking for cattle to purchase or consign? Do not forget to check out our consignment sale list located at the top of the Digital Beef Cattle search screen called “Maine-Anjou Cattle for Sale”. Active breeders may use this tool at any time to consign animals as long as you have a login for Digital Beef. NATIONAL SHOWS Anyone showing in a junior or open class at the national level must be an active member with the AMAA or American Maine-Anjou Junior Association (AJMAA). Junior members exhibiting at these shows must be the sole owner of the animal they are showing.
Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable. DNA REMINDERS Winter Sale Season is approaching and extended test times are expected. Please be aware that the Geneseek lab turnaround time is approximately 3-4 weeks on defect testing. Turnaround times are longer for multiple tests on one sample. Please be prepared when preparing for spring sales and shows that testing will take longer than normal. We would encourage you to start ordering the testing you need as soon as possible. For assistance with ordering please email Rylee at rylee@amaapc.com. • NEW All samples turned in on a hair card will be charged an additional $5 per sample starting January 1, 2022. • NEW The Panel #3 has dropped to $95 and this is the most inclusive test offered through AMAA. With this test you will receive 100 thousand DNA markers which includes parentage as well as genomics. The panel also includes several defect tests including TH and PHA. This is the recommended choice for those wishing to improve their herd. • AMAA will accept blood cards, tissue sampling units (TSU), semen straws or hair cards. • All bulls born after January 1, 2014 must be TH and PHA free by test or pedigree in order to register. If a bull is found to be a carrier, he can register as a foundation or performance bull only, but all progeny will have to test free of that defect in order to register. Foundation bulls will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring. • All A.I. sires regardless of breed and/or

commercial, must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering any progeny. • All donor dams must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering their ET calves. If a donor is dead before a sample was procured, you must DNA, TH and PHA test all ET calves in order to register them. NEOGEN UPDATED PROCEDURES The Neogen DNA lab has implemented new procedures regarding on hold orders. Samples must now be submitted to the lab within 30 days from the time of the order. Orders that are not received within 30 days will be deleted from their system. Samples that are received after the 30 days will experience delays in testing due to order recreation. It is recommended not to order the DNA testing until you have a sample procured and ready to submit. For DNA questions please contact Rylee Barber at

AMAA ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES Annual dues must be paid by Dec. 31, 2023. You must be an active member of the AMAA to register and transfer cattle.
ADULT MEMBERSHIP: $150 JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP: $25 The adult membership dues include a subscription to the Voice. Enclose an additional $40 to get the Voice first class.

The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Board of Directors held its spring meeting in April. Discussion was held regarding rising costs and how it has affected the day-to-day operations. The AMAA has managed to keep registration rates the same for nearly ten years. Rather than increasing registration fees, the motion was made to increase the adult membership rates to $150. Those that paid 2023 dues prior to July 1, 2023 will be assessed a $50 service fee. AMAA staff has started the billing process. Please return the payment within 30 days of the invoice date. Any account renewed or applied for after July 1, 2023 will pay the new adult membership rate. Starting January 1, 2024 all adult memberships/dues will be $150. The board also motioned to raise the junior memberships from $25 to $50 starting January 1, 2024. By increasing these fees, the AMAA will be able to continue offering the same quality service the membership is used to receiving while also mitigating the rising operating costs the AMAA has faced. Membership renewal notices will be mailed starting in October.

Hello, everyone. My name is Maelee Dean, and I am your American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) Region 1 Director. I have had the privilege of serving on the junior board for the past year and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I live in the small town of Vienna, Georgia, where I am currently a high school junior. From being born and raised on a row-crop operation, I have found my passion in production agriculture. Although my roots don’t run deep in the Maine-Anjou breed, I have developed a deep admiration for MaineAnjou cattle. For the past six years, I have shown MaineAnjou cattle at the state and national level, and I can genuinely say I have found my people. After attending my first Junior Nationals in 2021, I jumped into the junior activities head first, leading me to join the junior board. I am looking forward to the many adventures with my time as a Maine-Anjou director and can’t wait for a jam-packed summer. The summer’s first excitement will be Keep’ it real in Springfield, Missouri, for the 2024 Juniors Nationals. Yet before the fun and excitement of junior nationals begins, we have another thrilling event. On March 6th, prepare to join us for our online fundraising event hosted through Show Circuit. We will be offering items from livestock equipment, rare semen, new apparel, goodie baskets, and so much more. All proceeds will help benefit our
unforgettable time at Junior Nationals. My next favorite summer event is the Maine-Anjou Industry Networking Event or MAINE Event. Juniors, this is an opportunity you do not want to miss! The Maine event is for you if you enjoy having the time of your life, meeting lifelong friends, and growing your leadership skills. This year, we will host three jam-packed days of exciting fun and adventures in Dallas, TX. While in Dallas, be prepared to tour places like Priefert, Frito Lay, Buck Cattle Co., and much more. Mark your calendars and join us this July 23-26. This will undoubtedly be the highlight of your summer.
