M. BLAKE NELSON EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Greetings, This summer is moving by fast! The National Junior Heifer Show was a tremendous event due to the hard work of Lindsey, Rylee and all the team. The show provided a great experience for many junior members and their families that attended. This event is one of the major highlights for the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) each year by supplying an educational opportunity for our future leaders and showcasing some of the best cattle that Maine-Anjou has to offer. After leaving this event I feel both motivated and very blessed by the members that have and are investing in our breed, thank you! Just this past week I was able to go and look over the set of Maine-Anjou bulls that a group of progressive breeders have placed on the test at Rosebud Bull Development (RBD) in Rosebud, Ark. This is a tremendous set of bulls that have been fed in large grass traps, they will be at least 18-months old and will be for sale this fall. There will be another opportunity to feed bulls at RBD coming up this fall, if you have any interest or questions, please let me know. Watch for more highlights in the October Voice magazine.

There are many other opportunities to be involved in AMAA activities. This fall our national show will be held in conjunction with the American Royal, in Kansas City, Mo. We will host the national membership meeting and cattle shows on October 2021. This will be a great event and we look forward to seeing you there. Some other activities that it is time to start planning for are the Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the Power in the Pens Sale in Denver, Colo. These sales have historically featured some of the very best herdsire prospects and females that our breeders have to offer. The sales are held in conjunction with the Cattlemen’s Congress and the National Western Stock Show in the Yards. This is an excellent opportunity to market your program to a large, national audience or to find that next impact-full bull or female. The new EPDs have been formulated by Angus Genetics, Inc., AGI and will be available on Digital Beef very soon. Please recognize there may be some changes on your animals EPDs, but the percentile ranking should be very close to before,
even if the numerical change is substantial. Take a look and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at your convenience. Just prior to junior national a group of cattle died in southwest Kansas due to severe heat stress. Not only had I just been in that region the week prior, but I also saw mates to those cattle on a dedicated trip to look at Maine-Anjou influenced beef on dairy. The day I went through, I drove into a massive summer storm that spanned southwest Kansas into a large majority of Oklahoma. In talking with Dr. Tera Barnhardt, the consulting vet for those yards, she told me it was the first measurable precipitation in 270 days. That storm helped to keep temperatures cool for a few days, but then a sudden spike in temperature caused cattle that weren’t acclimated yet the inability to handle the ensuing heat day-after-day, and so we witnessed massive loss. In the days that followed, there was a large amount of misinformation and conspiracy – from comments about how this was intentional to affect supply chain and drive prices, to the comments of inhumane animal husbandry and saying the cattle were packed too tight in their pens. What’s most interesting in current times, and I am guilty of it at times too, is how many people AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2022 8
source their information from social media. What’s even more notable is that very rarely is the information coming from those directly involved in the agriculture industry. In fact, most of the comments are opinion pieces and/or from people that want to discredit modern agriculture. A few years back I served as part of a panel in Sacramento, Calif., for the NCBA on modern farming practices. A large part of the discussion focused on alternative sources of protein that would be viable replacements for modern livestock. This was just prior to the ‘Impossible Beef” craze that surfaced a few years back. As we, in the beef industry know, the Impossible Burger was just that … impossible to eat! During that conference and panel, a large attack was made on what non-agriculturists call “Factory Farms” and their disdain for such operations and the impact they have on modern society and the environment. Those of us that work in the Ag industry every day know that what they label as a factory farm, we call a multigenerational family farm. Often scrutiny over modern agriculture is coming from those who have no true understanding of what takes place daily. What has and continues to become more evident is that we must be a stronger voice in sharing and telling our story. We know the impact Agriculture has on youth and their development. This was showcased for all to see at the junior national. We witnessed firsthand how it helps youth to mature and develop skills that will last a lifetime. Let’s not forget to
mention the mentorship and friendships they will rely on as they grow into adulthood. Now, more than ever, we are not selling a product or a breed but a program - and all of us that are involved at the Association level wholeheartedly believe in the product we are selling. We believe we have the best Junior program, and that starts with you as breeders and your commitment to MaineAnjou cattle. Furthermore, we are looking to build and evolve the strength of Maine-Anjou with a feeding challenge for both juniors and adults. This will allow the breed to aid in telling the story of beef production, as well as allow us to impact membership growth though the feeding sector. We certainly face trying times with severe drought, a cattle cycle ahead of us, and constant scrutiny by those who don’t understand the commitment, practices, and beliefs we have in modern day beef production, but without question we can lay effort to those things we can control and that’s telling our story. A small group of dedicated, intelligent individuals focused on a common goal can effect change. I’m proud to say I’m a part of the MaineAnjou breed, and more importantly the Beef Industry. As we look to the fall, hopefully cooler temperatures, and calf selling season, be on the lookout for information on the feeding challenge. Cody loved the junior national, spending time with family, friends and Maine-Anjou cattle, but more importantly he loved working with his animals and getting them prepared to the highest level. A true talent, Cody worked hard at home and reaped those rewards at the show. In his young show career, he enjoyed competing in team fitting and showmanship and mentoring younger junior members and took great pride in exhibiting bred-and-owned cattle in national shows across the country. This memorial is given to deserving youth who embody the same characteristics that Cody had. A love for fitting and clipping, but also exhibiting and showing. The 2022 National Junior Heifer Show will go down as one of the s’most fun junior nationals of the summer. We camped, we s’mored and had the most fun in Kentucky! A highlight each summer for those younger exhibitors and attendees is the Little’s activities, hosted by the Miller Family. This summer was no different as lil' Campers from all over the US participated in the afternoon activities. This year marks the 6th year that a little’s activity was held in the afternoon and it has certainly come a long way since its humble beginning and a few coloring pages. A tremendous Thank You goes out to the Miller Family, Randy, Sheila, Kaylee & Kaleb. Without their dedication we would probably still be using the same coloring pages. INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION AND PERFORMANCE DATA: If work is submitted for weaning and yearling, but not completed, AMAA will delete the entry within three business days and it will need to be added once the data can be provided. AMAA will also delete registrations that have incomplete fields such as blank dams, sires, birthdates, names, tattoos or not owners of the dam that is entered within two weeks. The exception would be entries for registration that are pending due to testing. Please be aware that once a registration has been entered and the “Validate” button is selected, it goes to the registrar to be completed, invoiced and closed. AMAA will make an attempt to contact you prior to deleting the entry via email. VOICE & AJMAA INVOICES: Billing for e-mail blasts, sire catalogs and Voice ads are now billed under your Digital Beef account. If you pay by check please include the invoice number and make checks out to American Maine-Anjou Association. If you have a credit card on file please let us know if you want us to charge these fees to your card on file. Please make sure to pay your invoice within 60 days to avoid late fees. We hope that this will help our breeders maintain their invoice history in one location and make it easier for our breeders to pay online or by check. NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou. org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program. MEMBERSHIP ACCOUNTS It is the AMAA policy to only share account information with those authorized on an active AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2022 60
account, no matter the age of the account holder. The account holder must provide written permission to add a person(s) to their account to transfer and register on their behalf. Anyone that is not authorized on an account will not be provided passwords or invoice information no matter the age or relation to the account holder. The account holder is the only one that can call or e-mail the AMAA directly to remove or add any person(s) to/from their account. Any authorized person on the account can register, transfer, obtain or change passwords once they are on the account. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below.
Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Rylee at rylee@ amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in
advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner. REGISTRATIONS: The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. Block purchases must be pre-paid for prior to registering. MAPP ENROLLMENT All AMAA MAPP members that did not return their inventories by December 15, 2022 have been invoiced and payment is due upon receipt. Please make sure to mail payment as soon as possible to avoid late fees. Any MAPP members delinquent on MAPP fees will be removed July 1, 2022 and will have to pay a $50 fee plus

the MAPP fees to re-enter the program. Open enrollment for 2023 is scheduled for September 1, 2022.
FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees. ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person.
Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.
DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or nonregistered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. To submit a sample through the association, please follow the DNA request instructions on our website, maine-anjou. org, under the Genetics/Testing tab. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.
BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number. Once the animal has been tested the registration will be completed at the regular rate based on the animals age at the time the test is completed. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks. MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: Digital Beef will automatically convert cow/ heifer registrations to Maine-Angus if they qualify. All Maine-Angus bulls applied for will be reviewed by the registrar prior to converting to MaineAngus. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show. MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine-Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2022 61

Hello! My name is Emma Preston, and I will be serving as your 2022-2023 American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) Board President. I live on a small family farm in Illinois where we have a cow calf and row crop operation. This upcoming year I will be a sophomore at Iowa State University majoring in Agricultural Business with a focus in finance and marketing. This past junior national was held in Louisville, Ky., where we had a great turnout of exhibitors. The youth participation was outstanding and we are already excited to see what Grand Island, Neb., has in store for us next year. This coming month we are hosting our MAINE Event in Stillwater,
Okla., where we will have fun activities and learning opportunities available to the youth of the AJMAA. We are very excited to be able to connect with the young individuals in our MaineAnjou community and get to learn more about what makes this breed so special. If you were unable to attend this year’s MAINE Event, I highly recommend trying to attend in future years. It is a great opportunity to meet new people within the Maine-Anjou breed and make connections from all over the states. I am looking forward to serving as the AJMAA President this year, and having the opportunity to meet with so many of you!

History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. I own and operate Cramer Cattle. I have exhibited Maine-Anjou cattle at the Fort Worth and Houston livestock shows. I am a past owner of KT Ranch and have owned some of the Maine-Anjou breed’s icons like Polleroid and ZTA Black Ruby 224X along with others. My father, Jerry, served as a past American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) member. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? “By far the best steak you could ask for.” Additionally, the Maine-Anjou breed offers strengths as far as soundness, depth, bone, milk and cattle that you like to look at. Most importantly they grade top cuts of meat as well as more pounds at weaning and fast growth. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national? I have been involved with International cattle at the Houston Livestock Show as well as host a website and Facebook page for interested buyers. Additional Comments “I have been involved in raising Maine-Anjou cattle since 1975. We started as a family farm in Ohio, Oakridge Farm, and have seen lots of changes in the breed and association, some good and some not. I would be honored to serve and help in any way that I can to keep the Maine-Anjou breed at the forefront of the beef Industry.”

History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. I was raised in Maysville, Ky., on a mostly registered Angus operation until I returned from college and started to incorporate Maine-Anjou genetics into the cowherd to raise club calves and sale cattle. By acquiring key donors from the Bushy Park and Nowatzke programs I was able to utilize coop herds and IVF to produce the calves I now
sell. I also sell 25-30 select bred heifers each year in Ohio at The Holiday Classic. I have been blessed greatly in the Maine-Anjou bull area with herd sires that have included Daddy’s Money, Data Bank and a part owner of MVP, a recent triple crown winner. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? Maine-Anjou cattle have several strengths. From a commercial producer standpoint, they can add pounds of calf at weaning but not increasing birthweight. They also offer superior beef quality with extra muscle and maternal milking ability when crossed with Angus for a commercial operation. I truly believe with the addition of Maine Angus to the registry this breed with explode due to how good the cattle are for the commercial sector of our business and the bull and replacement heifer markets. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national? Currently Tolle Show Cattle consigns cattle to several sales and beef expos around the country as well as having a bred heifer sale in Ohio during December. I try to attend as many breeder sales as possible acting as a consultant to anybody that would like information on the cattle. Additional Comments I look forward to helping this breed move forward and take market share by having a superior animal and product to sell.

History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. My journey with Maine-Anjou cattle started in 1995 when my parents purchased my first ever show heifer, an Akeem daughter from Lind Maine- Anjou. At the time of getting started they chose Maine cattle because of their docility. Fast forward to 1997, I attended my first ever junior national in Columbus, Ohio, and from there I was hooked. Since that time I have only missed 3 junior nationals. Throughout my entire 4-H and
junior career I exhibited Maine-Anjou cattle and as a result of those heifer purchases have started the foundation of what the operation is becoming today. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? I believe Maines have the potential to become the premier Continental breed of choice for complimenting British cattle. Maines are heavy muscled, sound cattle that have performance. We’ve made great strides in improving the functionality and usefulness in the showring as well as for the traditional cow man. In addition, a big strength of the breed is the Maine Angus program. I believe this gives them versatility to compliment a larger spectrum of cow bases. What are your goals for the future of the Maine-Anjou breed? Greatness lies ahead for the Maine breed. My goal as a board member would be to keep a strong emphasis on producing sound, functional cattle that are balanced phenotypically and genetically. As we work towards those goals, I believe promotion of some of our growing programs within the breed will be key. I’m seeing that our breed is starting to have a stronger presence in the commercial cow herd and my hope is we can continue to grow that while not losing focus on our expanding junior program. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national level? I have always been a big supporter of the junior program and will continue to be at all levels. We have started to show and sell cattle at the National events in hopes of not only growing our operation but also fostering the notoriety of the Maine-Anjou breed. Finally, I am fortunate enough to be the Indiana Maine-Anjou Association President. Our group of talented and dedicated members are working together diligently to grow the breed and association membership of all ages at the state level.

CALI O’HARA, MONTANA
History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. I became involved in the Maine-Anjou breed 16 years ago. My in-laws have been raising Maine cattle since the 1970’s. Since joining the farm, I have cultivated a passion for raising and showing Maines. Our family has focused on creating highquality MaineTainer cattle using the vast Montana registered Angus genetics as our base. We currently run a herd of roughly 25% registered black Angus cows, 60% MaineTainer cows and 15% Maine-Anjou cows. We breed all of our cowherd with the commercial bull customer in mind. Most of our calves are 3/8 to 5/8 MaineTainer calves. We believe that is what our commercial bull customers are looking for. I believe that the future is bright in the Maine-Anjou breed. I feel that the commercial bull market is where the Maine-Anjou breed has the biggest opportunity for growth and feel that with the use of genomics, performance testing and kill data that the breed can take advantage of this opportunity. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? The genetic difference within the Maine-Anjou breed is a major strength of the breed. There is a very diverse set of genetics to choose from. This diverse set of genetics offers the ability to create cattle that work for any type of cattleman. We are a breed that is agile in our ability to prove ourselves in the showring as well as stand out in the sale ring. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national? We currently host online sales through the Show Circuit Online Sale platform in the spring and fall. I have three kids that are currently involved in showing Maines at the local, state and national level. I have truly enjoyed watching my kids in the Junior program, this has provided them with some amazing opportunities and we have made some
lifelong friendships. I feel it is vital to support the youth programs as they are the future of MaineAnjou genetics.
MARTY VAN VLIET, IOWA
History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. We started in 1980 with fullblood cattle and currently run 60 spring born and 20 fall born Maine-Anjou and Angus females. We have exhibited champions from Houston to Agribition and Louisville to Denver. We have had production sales, sold bulls in Denver, and generously supported state sales in Iowa over the years. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? Although we are known to be a breed that shows excellent cattle, I believe the breed’s greatest attributes lie in the ability to convert feed into a high quality protein product. Crossbreeding our breed with other breeds has proven to be a very beneficial cross. What are your goals for the future of the Maine-Anjou breed? My future goals are supporting the breed to become one of the most profitable breeds in the cattle industry. We need to try and diversify the gene pool for our breed as well. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national level? We support the breed at every single level. From the county fair level to the national level by selling calves in the spring and fall. I have served multiple terms on the state and national board and represented the Iowa Maine-Anjou Association on the Iowa Beef Breeds board. We have traveled to every junior national since 2008 to exhibit our own livestock as well as support livestock within the breed that we sold. Additional Comments: I would love to continue to help guide the Maine-Anjou breed into the future. I know I have decades of knowledge within this breed and would like to continue to help the breed’s value in the coming years.
ALICIA RIGDON, IOWA
History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. I have been a Maine-Anjou breeder for over 30 years. My sisters and I were very active in our state and the national Maine-Anjou junior associations growing up and I remain active to this day. I am an attorney for a technology company. My son and I own and operate Bar R Cattle Company in Mediapolis, Iowa. We currently have a fullblood and purebred Maine-Anjou cow/calf operation and raise primarily purebred Maine-Anjou calves for show and commercial breeding stock. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? Milk, maternal instinct, docility and longevity make Maine-Anjou cattle desirable within today’s beef industry. The fact that Maine-Anjou are a feed efficient breed that provides high cutability and marbling qualities make this breed ideal for today’s beef industry. Maine bulls add dollars to commercial herds by providing vigorous calves that rapidly gain weight thereby providing profit for the producer. What are your goals for the future of the Maine-Anjou breed? The breed has achieved top recognition in the showring, but has yet to gain the same acceptance with the commercial cattleman. My desire would be that the breed achieves the same acceptance with the commercial cattlemen as we have within the show world. Acceptance with the commercial cattleman has been a desire of the breed for some time, but there has been a reluctance to take the necessary steps to provide those customers with the data and performance information they need to make the informed decision to use more Maine-Anjou bulls and females. The 50K genotype project was a necessary step towards this, but more updated data is necessary. More participation in feed trials, providing individual breeder data when they maintain ownership of cattle through the feedlot, and other herd data will also assist in the compilation of information that can be available to all breeders and used to break the barrier and obtain acceptance of this breed within commercial operations. Additionally, I believe we need to
maintain a strong focus on our youth program. I am a product of that program. It helped me to want to stay a part of this breed to have my own kids grow up and take part in these activities. Maintaining a strong focus on the youth will also ensure a strong future for the breed What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national level? I have been active in the Maine-Anjou breed associations in both Missouri and Iowa. My family has been a financial supporter and volunteers at the National Junior Show for many years. I personally sponsor several scholarships awarded at the National Junior show since 2015. We have participated in state fairs with Maine cattle in IA, MO, NE, IL, IN, OH, OK, and AR. We have exhibited at the World Beef Expo, American Royal, NAILE, Fort Worth and National Western. We sell primarily to commercial operations in Missouri, Iowa, Michigan, and Illinois. Our fall sale of show stock has sold into Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, and Iowa. Additional Comments: I think that most cattle breeders would agree that sire selection is extremely important in building a quality herd. But owning the right kind of female is the foundation to any good breeding program and has been a key objective in our operation. We have committed ourselves to developing genetically superior cow families to ensure predictability in future generations.

ETHAN MOORE, OKLAHOMA
History of your operation I began my interest in Maine-Anjou cattle over 20 years ago as a junior exhibitor. Our family has been very active raising and showing Maines ever since. Today we have grown our herd to over 250 head. SInce the beginning we have worked with Buck Cattle Company on purchasing and marketing a portion of our cattle and continue this today. We have been very focused on quality cattle that will work in any part of the beef industry.
What do you view as strengths of the MaineAnjou breed and how can those strengths be used in today’s beef industry? I really like what Maine-Anjou has to offer the beef business. To me, Maine’s help to provide the extras - stoutness, performance and eye appeal. All of these traits, along with their consistency, add value. I have also found that the udder quality and longevity of our Maine cows exceeds a lot of other breeds. The beef industry is driven by the production of pounds of red meat and Maine’s can improve that better than any breed out there. What are your goals for the future of the Maine-Anjou breed? We want to continue to raise some of the best cattle we can that will go out and make money for our customers. My wife, Sierra, was also very active as a junior Maine-Anjou exhibitor and we look forward to raising our family in the Maine breed. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national level? We currently market cattle through many of Buck Cattle Co., sales and assist juniors that buy our cattle throughout the year. We are very supportive of the AJMAA in all of it’s activities both on the state and national level as well as the Voice magazine by placing ads throughout the year. Additional comments The Maine-Anjou breed has been good to us and I want to do my part to help grow the breed and make it better. -
ERNIE DOMINGUEZ, TEXAS
History of your operation I grew up in Mercedes, Texas, and became active in the livestock industry through my involvement in 4-H, FFA, and several breed associations. As a third-generation cattleman, our emphasis is on sound, practical, and functional cattle that can compete in the showring, but also perform out in the pasture. We purchased our first Maine-Anjou purebred heifer in 1999. I was in high
school looking for a show heifer prospect, and decided on the Maine-Anjou breed. The next year, I selected a second Maine-Anjou heifer to show my senior year. I loved how the heifers we purchased had the right combination of maternal look and enough muscle shape to compete in the south. The heifers turned out to be very productive, good mothers, which is all you can want from retired show heifers. From there, we bred and raised our own, while continuing to add select females from successful programs across the country. Today, we continue to use Maine-Anjou females and bulls to complement our Maine and other registered herd program. What do you view as strengths of the MaineAnjou breed and how can those strengths be used in today’s beef industry? I believe the Maine-Anjou breed has the ability to compliment most of the US cowherd with added carcass cutability and feed efficiency. Maine-Anjou cattle are very versatile and help add more pounds at weaning due to the natural muscling the breed has to offer in addition to mothers having really good milking ability. The Maine-Anjou breed has strong maternal traits. For those reasons, and others, the Maine-Anjou breed can improve efficient production of the end product extremely well. What are your goals for the future of the Maine-Anjou breed? We will continue to use Maine-Anjou genetics in our program for years to come. I believe in an all options on the table approach when setting goals for the future. We need to incorporate everyone’s ideas and come up with the best solutions that will help the breed continue to be progressive and relevant. The showring is one aspect of the industry, but we also need to continue to build relationships with the commercial cattlemen, so we can using all vehicles possible to promote the breed and reach the most people. I believe the Maine-Anjou breed has tremendous upside and will continue to increase market share in the industry.
What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national level? Our family markets cattle through shows and online social media outlets. We have exhibited our cattle at all the Texas majors since 1999. We believe in having conversations with anyone who wants to know more about the cattle industry and help point them in the right direction when it comes to their buying decisions. I travel all over the state, region and country to promote not only our operation, but the Maine-Anjou breed. This breed has so much to offer the industry - we have a great story to tell! Additional comments It would be an absolute honor to serve on the board of this great breed association. I believe we have a great foundation and the genetics to take any program (show, commercial, feedlot, etc.) in the country to another level. We now have two locations. I live in Elgin, Texas, and maintain one of our two herds. My Dad still manages the original herd in Mercedes, Texas.

WYATT DEJONG, NEBRASKA History of your operation/family and involvement with the Maine-Anjou breed. DeJong Ranch first used Maine-Anjou sires back in 1971 and quickly saw both the value and challenges of the breed as Fullbloods. In the spring of 1972, my grandfather, his brother and my dad saw that with the added power, it also brought major concerns of birth weights and calving ease. Yet, even in that first and only set of Berlin calves, came the 1973 International Champion Pen of 3 steers in Chicago and the Reserve Champion Steer, which we believe is the first ever Maine-Anjou sired steer to win at a major show in the US. In 1972, DeJong Ranch made the decision to continue finding the value of the Maine-Anjou breed while selecting genetics that proved to be balanced and remains committed to the breed to this day. My older sisters and I all grew up raising and showing Maine-Anjou cattle. All of us kids were active in the breed in shows and especially in the junior national shows across the country. There, we met some of the greatest families and friends in the cattle industry. The summer show was always
a major event that we looked forward to as a family. Still to this day, I proudly claim the Maine-Anjou Junior National as one of the best experiences for youth and their families. Both my older sister, Tina, and I served on the junior board at different times. As an Ag teacher, I had the pleasure of working with many young people to help them understand the complexities of the beef cattle industry. Part of this has been done through summer classes that I have taught and livestock projects that kids work on to understand how to care for livestock. It has been so much fun getting kids and their families exposed to the Maine-Anjou breed through these projects. My wife and I, along with the rest of the family continue to use Maine-Anjou genetics as the baseline of our operation. What do you see as the strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed and how can those strengths best be used in today’s beef industry? The three top reasons that my family used Maine-Anjou genetics back in 1971 are still true today: (1) add skeletal width with increased muscle mass, (2) increase docility, and (3) compliment the quality of Angus carcass traits while enhancing cutability and trimness. Our family continues to use Maines for their balance in the cattle industry and I believe they continue to prove to us that the breed’s influence rises to meet the standards of the beef industry. I feel these cattle do this while holding firm to the quality of maternal traits, feed efficiency, docility and eye appeal to make them successful in any realm of beef production. I love the eye appeal and power that has traditionally made them desirable for the showring, yet when done right, they make some of the most functional and productive mothers that have longevity and long-term value. As a breed, we need to embrace the two major segments of the beef industry that we excel at: youth programs within the showring context AND producing a superior beef animal capable of helping the cattle industry in all stages be successful as well as producing exceptional beef for the consumer. We must work to develop the value of both of these areas. There seems to be a natural conflict between these two elements of the beef world which can make it very challenging to push Maine-Anjou cattle toward great success. We must first come to fully accept that Maines are
great show cattle and Maines are great production cattle. What does your present operation do to promote Maine-Anjou genetics, whether it be locally, state, regional or national? The DeJong Ranch just held our 54th annual production sale this past March. With the focus of raising bulls over the years, our family has made the decision to participate in all of the feed trials and studies available to Maine-Anjou producers to try to get more data to promote our breed. We have been fortunate to work with all personnel at the American Maine-Anjou Association over the years to help promote the value of Maine genetics to our customers. In addition, our family exhibits our livestock whenever we can at local, state, and national shows. Still one of the biggest methods that I have personally used to promote MaineAnjou genetics comes from my work with students. I have been an Ag teacher in South Dakota and Nebraska. During my times working with students, I am able to help students see the value in all breeds of cattle. I believe that it is so important for students to understand the facts about each breed to understand the differences that they can bring to the table. Maine-Anjou cattle have an even bigger role of learning for my students as they are able to work with a Maine-Anjou influenced calf each year and they can see first hand the value in these cattle. The DeJong Ranch has worked closely with local and state level 4-H, FFA and youth breed associations to promote opportunities for students to become educated young people that can excel in the beef cattle industry.

Thank You Herdsmen Group I would like to personally thank the Herdsmen group for naming me the Junior Herdsman of the year. I cannot begin to describe the joy and graciousness that I have felt since. Raising and exhibiting Maine-Anjou cattle has been at the forefront of my entire life. Growing up with two older brothers, I felt as if my accomplishments were somewhat diminished by their own successes. It was never something to complain about, however, because they are a few of the role models that have molded me into the person I am today. As I have matured I have also looked up to Herdsmen such as yourselves and strived to mimic the work ethic, skills, and dedication that you all represent. Going forward, I am positive that the connections and involvement that producing and exhibiting Maine cattle have brought will continue to set myself as well as the many others who have been recognized for this award apart.
