The Maine-Anjou breed is currently one of the hottest breeds in the industry due largely to the tremendous cattle our breeders produce. As you flip through the pages, you will see bulls that can make a huge difference in one generation when used in any scenario. This is a much-needed platform to give our breeders the ability to showcase their bulls in a single source.

This line-up is an outstanding set of beef bulls that display the many breeding options available for you and your breeding goals. In recent years, it seems as though Maine-Anjou breeders, and cattle enthusiasts alike, have been on a quest to progress and make available new and forward-thinking genetics. The creation and progression of the Maine Angus program brought about the thoughts of what’s next and begged the question, “How do I keep my Maine Angus, a Maine Angus?” Promotion of new yearling AI sires within the Maine Angus distinction are proof that cattlemen and women are after making the next generation as exciting and versatile for all those that want to breed Maine-Anjou genetics. It goes without saying, the fullblood genetics maintain the root of our breed and are still being progressed by both longtime and young breeders to create modern and profitable cattle.

CAN I REGISTER A PHA OR THA CARRIER BULL?

The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) does not permit the registration of a PHA or TH carrier bull into the breed registry. The AMAA does allow a PHA or TH carrier bull to have a “F” number, which places that animal into the Foundation category. This allows the breeder to use the bull, and if progeny test clean they will receive the Maine-Anjou influence from the original carrier sire. For instance: If you have a performance registered ½ blood Maine-Anjou bull and you bred him to commercial cows and the resulting progeny are clean of both TH and PHA, you could register those cattle as ¼ Maine-Anjou.

CAN I REGISTER PHA OR TH CARRIER FEMALES?

Yes, we allow carrier females to be registered. However, if those carrier Maine-Anjou females are used to make Maine Angus cattle, the progeny are required to be tested and clean in order to be registered as a Maine Angus. We do not allow Maine Angus females to be PHA or TH carriers.

WHAT IS THE LOWEST POSSIBLE PERCENTAGE WE WILL RECOGNIZE IN THE REGISTRY?

¼ by fraction only, not percentage.

DOES THE AMAA ALLOW OTHER BREEDS TO BE REGISTERED INTO THE MAINE-ANJOU HERD BOOK?

Yes. Contact the office and they will add the non-Maine-Anjou parent to the herd book, so you can process registration.

WHAT TESTING IS REQUIRED FOR AN AI SIRE/DONOR DAM?

Regardless of breed, or if it’s commercial, the AMAA requires TH, PHA and parentage testing.

HOW LONG DOES TESTING TAKE?

Testing, typically, takes 4-6 weeks once samples reach the lab.

HOW DO I KNOW THE RESULTING PERCENTAGES OF MY MAINE-ANJOU OFFSPRING?

A percentage upgrading chart can be found on page 53 of this sire directory.

HOW DO I DISTINGUISH BETWEEN A MAINETAINER OR HIGH MAINE?

A MaineTainer is an animal that registers between 1/4 and 5/8 Maine-Anjou. A High Maine is a ¾ and up by fraction only as listed on Digital Beef, not by percentage.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO QUALIFY TO BE A MAINE ANGUS?

The detailed description is in this book. The first to consider is that only registered animals can be used to build Maine Angus, there are also strict rules for color, genetic defects, and parentage.

WHAT DO I BREED MY MAINE ANGUS FEMALE TO STAY IN THE MAINE ANGUS PROGRAM?

The easy answer is to a Maine Angus bull that had met the criteria. In this catalog you will see a section titled Maine Angus. There are other breeding options available as well.

IS THERE A MAINE ANGUS DIVISION AT EVERY SHOW?

Currently, there is not a Maine Angus division at every show, the program is growing in popularity and there are getting to be more all the time. However, remember that any Maine Angus individual has already met the standards to be a registered MaineTainer and this is also present on their AMAA papers. So you can still show them as a MaineTainer, if needed. The shows that currently have a Maine Angus Division are the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, Cattlemen’s Congress, National Western Stock Show, and Junior Nationals.
