Hudson Valley Chapter
Your guide to help with Alzheimer’s disease and all other dementia
Serving families in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties
Hello, Hudson Valley! Thank you for taking the time to look through this brochure, and for taking advantage of the many wonderful programs and services that we offer, all for free. Here in the Hudson Valley, we are lucky to have an amazing staff, wonderful volunteers and generous donors — all of whom share our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease that attacks the brain, causing dementia. Symptoms of dementia include abnormal forgetfulness and difficulty thinking and performing everyday activities. The symptoms can be caused by a variety of diseases, but Alzheimer’s is the most common. It is not a normal part of aging. There is no cure, though some treatments can temporarily relieve the symptoms.
More than 6 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, including at least 200,000 people younger than 65 and an estimated 6.5 million 65 and over. Nearly 40,000 people are affected in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties. If no cure or means of prevention is found, by mid-century as many as 18 million Americans will likely have Alzheimer’s.
The Alzheimer’s Association is spearheading the national effort to defeat Alzheimer’s. We are the largest private funder of Alzheimer’s research in the world, and our advocacy network is striving to make Alzheimer’s a national priority. We believe we can create a world without Alzheimer’s while making a difference in the lives of those who live with it. Through our staff and volunteers, we offer a wide range of information and services for people with dementia as well as their families, caregivers and health professionals.
Please feel free to reach out to me and share your thoughts and concerns. We are here to help. Thank you for joining us in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and all other dementia.
