CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT To test out handle form and brainstorm through barrel movement I initially made mockups out of cardboard and clay and developed them using polyurethane foam To show the pivoting mechanism between the barrel and handle, I used a ping pong ball with an elastic string through it

Limiting the number of use materials minimizes the number of parts for the product and package, allowing easier assembly

Material impacts are rduced by minimizing the quantity of materials to just using bamboo for the packaging, and using only four other materials for the product

Selecting use of sugar based cellulose plastic instead of standard styrenes or polyethylenes allows product to biodegrade during end of life

Using bamboo as the material for packaging creates timeless aesthetic appeal and fosters an emotional connection to users

Product and packaging weight and volume is reduced by incorporating minimal design Having a cavity inside the handle eliminates the need for a brush cap Offsetting the base allows for cord management -discarding the need for other components

Having the packaging be a snug fit for the base gets rid of the need for other materials for support

IDEATION Before jumping into Solidworks, I did a quick exploration of the overall toy plane’s form portraying round and bubbly shaped bodies suitable for younger children.

I developed my selected form further in Solidworks, using lofts, boundaries, and curvature to build on the cockpit, propeller, wings, and main body.

IDEATION Inspired by natural and earthy forms and the thinness of sea shells, I focused on making the body of the stapler minimal and organicly shaped.

My design is targeted towards business women who spend a lot of time in the office but adore beach-type scenery, architecture, and decor.

After exploring through foam mock ups, I made my final design out of modulan and used it as a mold to thermoform my final model in styrene.

SCAVENTER HUNT Before jumping into sketching concepts, we were assigned to go on a scavenger hunt, through thrift stores, in search of interesting mechanisms and inspiration during the beginning of the design process.

Out of all the things I found, I was interested in the pull-down mechanism of the portable flashlight and tire pressure gauge

PERSONA Using the pull down mechanisms from my inspiration, I wanted to create a portable TDS tester for health conscious men and women who like traveling to different countries

IDEATION I first began exploring different ways of carrying a probe to test drinking water quality and a reservoir for a brine solution to treat water -all incorporated in a portable iphone 5 case.

RESEARCH

Initial research began in groups where we contriubuted findings of both common and uncommon activities and interests of boys ages 8 to 10. From there we mapped out morning and evening routines, taking note of products and people boys interact with during the day at school or at home.

My target users are boys ages 8-10 that are into outdoor activities and learning about nature but get sucked in at home by video games, tablets, and computers, losing physical interactions with friends and family members.

IDEATION My initial ideation consisted of different possibilities of connecting children with friends and family members by observing products children like to come in contact with during play time.

I developed use of products like cameras, projectors, magnifying lenses, and binoculars through different scenarios and storyboards.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT I selected to develop the shared binoculars concept from my initial mock ups and progressed towards a more rugged octagon form after finding that 8-10 year old boys are fond of playful yet aggressive volumes.

Along with form development, I focused on detail refinement which included the grips, zoom and power buttons, charge and partline locations.

DETAILS For the neck straps I first tried out strips of leather with snap fasteners and switched over to nylon after noticing that it looks more playful when attached to the rest of the parts. The snaps on the sides of the straps allow the binoculars to be easily shared or used alone. Magnets in each half let users separate it or keep it as one unit.
