IS VICTORIA’S MULTICULTURALISM BECOMING A SECURITY PORTFOLIO? Nail Aykan The Government describes this as a “new chapter” in its partnership with multicultural communities. That is an important and welcome ambition. But it also makes another question more important, not less: what place and purpose will multiculturalism have in the Victoria that emerges after the election? The question is particularly relevant because, while the Government is creating an independent institution to strengthen multiculturalism across government, ministerial responsibility for Multicultural Affairs sits alongside Police, Emergency Services and Crime Prevention. There may be practical reasons for this arrangement. Community safety is undoubtedly an important multicultural issue. Communities are confronting antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, hate crime, extremism and threats against religious and community institutions. Multicultural communities need to feel safe, and governments have a responsibility to protect them. But what happens to multiculturalism when its political leadership is located within a ministerial portfolio dominated by policing, crime prevention and public safety?
The Multicultural Review Paradox There is now an even sharper paradox at the heart of Victoria’s multicultural policy. The Government has legislated to establish Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria, an independent body intended to give diverse communities a stronger voice, advise government and drive multicultural outcomes across the public sector.
As Victoria’s 28 November election draws closer, the Government has made a significant statement about the future of multiculturalism. The Victorian Parliament has passed legislation establishing Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria, an independent body intended to give diverse communities a stronger voice in government and greater influence over policy and programs. It will commence on 1 October. This reflects the central argument of the 2025 Victorian Multicultural Review: multiculturalism should be treated not simply as the responsibility of one department or portfolio, but as a whole-ofgovernment priority. The Review involved more than 600 Victorians through 57 consultations and received almost 200 submissions. Its conclusion was clear: multiculturalism is one of Victoria’s great strengths, requiring a stronger, refreshed, whole-of-government approach. The Government is now putting that vision into legislation. Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria will have a Coordinator General and two deputies, with a role in representing communities and influencing policy across government. Yet political responsibility for Multicultural Affairs remains alongside Police, Emergency Services and Crime Prevention. That is where the tension becomes difficult to ignore. On one hand, the Government is creating an institution designed to strengthen multiculturalism, participation and influence across government. On the other, political responsibility remains within a ministerial framework strongly associated with policing, public order and security. The two positions do not necessarily contradict each other. But they raise an important question: will the new institution broaden the way government understands multiculturalism, or will security and public order remain the dominant political lens? Community safety is an essential part of multicultural policy. It should not, however, become the lens through which multiculturalism is defined. The Government’s recent $6 million investment in security for
57 multicultural and multifaith organisations reflects the real threats communities face. These measures are necessary and welcome. The concern is what happens if the focus on risk, security and public order gradually begins to shape how multicultural communities are understood, rather than recognising them as participants and contributors to Victorian society. That would represent a very different conception of multiculturalism.
An election issue This is why the future of multiculturalism should be part of the conversation when Victorians go to the polls on 28 November. Victoria’s multicultural communities are much more than recipients of government services. They are part of the social, economic and civic life of this state — as workers, business owners, professionals, volunteers, community leaders and citizens. The Government’s new legislation is an opportunity to move that understanding further. An independent multicultural body can give communities a stronger voice and improve accountability. But institutions alone will not determine how multiculturalism is understood. The political leadership surrounding those institutions matters too. The question for this election should therefore be broader: How will you keep multicultural communities safe while enabling them to participate and shape Victoria’s future? And perhaps more fundamentally: What is your vision for multicultural Victoria? Every political party should be asked. To Labor: You initiated the Multicultural Review and are now
establishing Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria. How will you ensure Multicultural Affairs retains a strong, independent policy voice and is not subsumed within a broader security framework? To the Coalition: What is your vision for multicultural Victoria beyond migration, social cohesion and community safety? How will multicultural communities participate in shaping your policy agenda? To the Greens: How will you strengthen multicultural participation, representation and anti-racism while ensuring community safety remains a shared responsibility? To One Nation: What is your vision for a multicultural Victoria? Do you accept that people from different cultural and faith backgrounds are an integral part of Victoria’s civic identity, and what would your policies mean for their equal participation in public life? These are not unreasonable questions. Nor are they partisan. They go to the heart of what kind of Victoria we want to build. The Government has consistently said multiculturalism is one of Victoria’s greatest strengths. It has now legislated for a new institution to give communities greater voice and influence across government. The election provides an opportunity to test that commitment. Multiculturalism should be about more than how communities are managed, protected or policed. It should recognise people from different backgrounds as active participants in Victorian society people who belong, contribute and help shape their communities. Community safety is essential to that vision. But it should strengthen multiculturalism, not define what multiculturalism becomes.

MELBOURNE THIRD, SYDNEY SEVENTH
AS TWO AUSTRALIAN CITIES RANK AMONG WORLD’S TOP 10 SPORTING CITIES Australia has reinforced its reputation as one of the world’s leading sporting nations, with Melbourne and Sydney both securing places among the top 10 sporting cities in the world, according to a new ranking published by British newspaper The Telegraph. Melbourne was ranked third globally, behind only London and New York, while Sydney placed seventh, giving Australia two cities in a list featuring some of the world’s most recognised sporting destinations. The ranking considered factors including the number and variety of major sporting events hosted by each city, crowd atmosphere, sporting history, major venues and the overall appeal of a destination to fans travelling to attend important events.
Melbourne: Sport at the Heart of the City Melbourne’s third-place ranking reflects the central role sport plays in the city’s identity and everyday life. The Telegraph highlighted Melbourne’s long-standing claim to be the “sporting capital of the world”, pointing to the extraordinary variety of major events hosted throughout the year. Among the city’s bestknown international events is the Australian Open, one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments, which attracts leading players and hundreds of thousands of spectators each summer. Melbourne also hosts the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert
sporting landscape, combining traditional Australian sports, major international events and the lasting legacy of the Olympics.
Two Australian Cities Among the World’s Best London topped The Telegraph ranking, followed by New York in second place and Melbourne in third.
Park, the Melbourne Cup, one of Australia’s most famous horse races, and the AFL Grand Final, the showpiece event of Australian rules football. Cricket is another major part of Melbourne’s sporting calendar, particularly the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The MCG is one of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues and remains central to Melbourne’s sporting identity. It hosts international cricket, the AFL Grand Final and a wide range of other major events. The Boxing Day Test, beginning on 26 December each year, has become one of the most recognisable traditions of the Australian sporting summer and regularly attracts large crowds and international attention. Another advantage for Melbourne is the concentration of many of its major sporting venues close to the city centre. Melbourne Park, the MCG and other facilities sit within easy reach of the CBD, making major sporting events closely integrated with the city’s

broader cultural and entertainment life. Melbourne’s sporting identity also extends well beyond major international tournaments. Australian rules football enjoys enormous support, while cricket, football, rugby, basketball and other sports also have strong followings. This combination of global events, major venues and an deeply established sporting culture helped Melbourne rank ahead of cities including Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.
Sydney: Olympic Legacy and Sporting Diversity Australia’s strong showing continued with Sydney in seventh place, confirming its status as another major international sporting city. The Telegraph highlighted Sydney’s connection with the 2000 Olympic Games, one of the most important sporting events ever hosted in Australia. One of the defining moments of those Games
was Australian athlete Cathy Freeman’s victory in the women’s 400 metres, a performance that remains one of the most celebrated moments in Australian sporting history. More than 25 years later, the Sydney Olympics continue to form an important part of the city’s sporting legacy, supported by venues and infrastructure that remain in regular use. But Sydney’s sporting identity extends far beyond its Olympic history. Rugby league has a major following, with clubs such as the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs representing a long and competitive tradition. In Australian rules football, the Sydney Swans have developed a strong following, while Sydney FC remains one of the best-known clubs in Australian football. Cricket also holds an important place in the city, with the historic Sydney Cricket Ground continuing to host major domestic and international matches. Sydney’s strength lies in the diversity of its
Paris came fourth, followed by Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and Sydney. Rio de Janeiro ranked eighth, Tokyo ninth and Las Vegas tenth. The inclusion of both Melbourne and Sydney among the world’s top 10 sporting cities highlights the depth of Australia’s sporting culture. Both cities combine world-class events with strong domestic competitions, major venues and passionate local audiences. Melbourne’s thirdplace finish gives it the highest Australian ranking, while Sydney’s seventh-place position ensures that Australia has two of its largest cities represented among the world’s leading sporting destinations. The result also reflects the broader role sport continues to play in Australian life, from internationally recognised tournaments and major stadium events to deeply established local competitions and sporting traditions.
AUSTRALIA TIGHTENS MIGRATION RULES, WITH NEARLY ONE IN THREE RESIDENTS BORN OVERSEAS The Australian government has unveiled a new package of migration measures aimed at tightening the temporary visa system and limiting the practice of moving between visas to extend a person’s stay, as official figures show that almost one in three Australian residents was born overseas. Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Tony Burke announced the changes during an address to the National Press Club in Canberra on September 17, outlining reforms affecting international students, graduates, visitors and Working Holiday Maker visa holders. The measures come as the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show Australia’s population reached 27.9 million at the end of March 2026, an increase of 392,700 people, or 1.4 per cent, over the previous year. Net overseas migration contributed 292,100 people to population growth during the year to March, down from 309,500 in the previous 12 months — a decline of 5.6 per cent. Overseas migration remained the largest contributor to population growth across every state and territory.
One in Three Born Overseas The latest ABS figures on country of birth underline the significant role migration continues to play in shaping modern Australia. At June 2025, 8.8 million of Australia’s 27.6 million residents were born overseas, representing 32 per cent of the population, up from 31.5 per cent a year earlier. The figure is approaching
the highest proportion recorded in Australia, 32.4 per cent in 1891. India, England, China and New Zealand were the four largest overseasborn populations. In 2025, India narrowly overtook England to become the largest overseas country of birth among Australian residents for the first time on record.
Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Tony Burke
Changes Affecting International Students International students are among the groups affected by the government’s changes. Under the reforms, secondary applicants on most new student visas will be restricted, meaning many international students will no longer automatically be able to include family members on their visa applications. The government has said the changes will apply to future visas and will not retrospectively affect families already in Australia. Exemptions will apply to some categories, including certain students from Pacific and ASEAN countries and some higher-degree students. The government is also targeting so-called “visa hopping”, where
people move from one visa or course to another in order to remain in Australia. Students will still be able to extend their studies in legitimate circumstances or move to a higher qualification, but the government intends to restrict movement into lowerlevel courses where the primary purpose appears to be extending a person’s stay rather than progressing academically.
New Rules for Visitors Visitor visas will also generally carry a “No Further Stay” condition under the changes. The measure is designed to prevent visitors from arriving in Australia and then applying onshore for another visa, allowing them to move onto a bridging visa while the new application is processed. Burke said the change would apply to future visitor visas and would not affect people already in Australia. Protection visa applications are excluded from the restriction.
Working Holiday Program Tightened Significant changes are also being introduced to the Working Holiday Maker program. People seeking a second or third year in Australia will still need to meet existing regional work requirements, but they will then have to enter a ballot for a limited number of places. The second-year ballot will be capped at 45,000 places, compared with about 57,000 people who qualified last year. The third-year allocation will be reduced much more sharply, to 5,000 places, compared with about 31,000 people in the previous year. The changes have prompted concerns from some regional businesses and agricultural groups that rely heavily on backpackers and other temporary workers.
International Education Remains a Major Industry The reforms also come at a time when international education remains a major contributor to the
Australian economy. Australian government figures show international education was worth almost $55 billion to the economy in 2025, including tuition fees and spending on goods and services. The government says the objective of the broader migration changes is not to close Australia to migration, but to strengthen control over who arrives, who remains and who must leave, while continuing to prioritise skilled migrants in areas where workers are needed, including healthcare, construction, education and agriculture. The reforms place migration firmly back at the centre of Australia’s national debate, as the country seeks to balance population growth, demand for workers and international students with pressures on housing, infrastructure and public services. With 32 per cent of the population born overseas, migration remains not only an economic and policy issue, but a defining feature of contemporary Australian society.

DON’T BE A DRAINER
10 THINGS TO AVOID POURING DOWN THE SINK
We all know winter fog on the road can be hazardous, but did you know is there another type of ‘FOG’ in the home that can damage your drains – fats, oils and grease. FOG is among 10 household liquids and items RACV says to avoid putting down the drain, alongside other offenders such as coffee grounds, food scraps, baking ingredients and dairy products. Pouring the wrong substances down pipes can lead to costly plumbing issues, unpleasant odours, environmental harm and even health risks. Across the last three financial years there has been more than 114,000 callouts alone for plumbing related incidents to RACV Emergency Home Assist (EHA), with plumbing accounting for 72.5 per cent or nearly three quarters of all jobs. With a year-on-year increase for blocked drain callouts from 20232026 RACV recommends 10 items not to pour – or squish – down your drains and sink.
1. Cooking oil, fats and grease (FOG) One of the biggest culprits in blocked drains. While they go down as liquids, these substances solidify as they cool and stick to the inside of pipes, building up over time and trapping other debris into a congealed, greasy sludge that
seriously clogs drains.
2. Coffee grounds – One of the most common causes of kitchen sink clogs. Coffee grounds aren’t fully water-soluble and stick together when wet, accumulating in pipes – especially when combined with grease. 3. Food scraps – Even
with a sink strainer or garbage disposal, large amounts of food waste shouldn’t go down the drain. Rice, pasta and noodles expand with water and stick to other debris, eggshells can bind with grease to create blockages, and fibrous vegetables and starchy leftovers cause problems too.
4. Cleaning chemicals and harsh liquids –
These substances can corrode pipes, disrupt wastewater treatment systems and contaminate local waterways. Avoid paint and paint thinners, solvents and adhesives, strong household cleaners in large quantities, and bleach mixed with other chemicals.
5. Medications – Medications may not
AL WASAT 178 ¿ Rabi' al-Thani 1448 ¿ September 2026 هـ ¿ أيلول1448 ¿ ربيع الثاني178 الوسط
block your pipes, but they pose a severe environmental risk. Dissolved medications can end up in our drinking water, pollute groundwater and soil, and harm livestock and wildlife – and wastewater treatment plants aren’t always equipped to fully remove them.
6. Personal care products – Many
bathroom items are marketed as ‘flushable’, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe for your pipes. Hair, wet wipes, cotton buds and balls, dental floss and sanitary products don’t break down easily and can cause significant blockages in both household plumbing and municipal sewer systems.
7. Flour and baking ingredients – Flour
mixed with water creates a thick, glue-like slurry that clings to pipes and contributes to clogs. Dough and batter can also expand and harden inside your plumbing.
8. Dairy products – Milk, cream and cheese can contribute to grease build-up in pipes. Small amounts are unlikely to
cause immediate issues, but regularly pouring dairy down the drain adds to long-term blockages.
9. Cat litter and pet waste – Even when
labelled ‘flushable’, cat litter and pet waste can create serious plumbing problems – cat litter absorbs water and expands, which can quickly block pipes.
10. Fruit and vegetable stickers –
These little stickers are surprisingly harmful to water systems. Made of plastic and adhesive, they don’t dissolve – instead they stick to the insides of pipes, get caught in wastewater treatment filters, or end up in rivers and oceans where they can be eaten by aquatic wildlife. General Manager RACV Trades, Solar & Home Security Adrian Steidle said most blockages are easy to avoid. “Most of the drain blockages we see are completely avoidable – they build up gradually from everyday habits in the kitchen and bathroom,” Steidle said. “A few small changes to what you put down the sink can save households
the cost and hassle of an emergency call-out. “Cooking oil, fats and grease are the number one offender. They pour away as a liquid but set hard inside your pipes, and over time they trap everything else that goes down the drain. The simplest fix is to let them cool in a container and put them in the bin. “It’s not just about your own plumbing – things like medications, wet wipes and even the little stickers on your fruit and veg don’t break down, and they can end up harming our waterways and wildlife. “Beyond keeping the wrong things out of your drains, a few simple steps make a real difference — use sink strainers to catch food and debris, run hot water after washing up to help clear any residue, clean your drains regularly with mild, non-corrosive solutions, and always dispose of waste properly using your bin, compost or recycling. “If you’re noticing slow drains, gurgling or odours, don’t wait – sorting it early is far cheaper than dealing with a major blockage down the track. For anything persistent, it’s best to call a licensed plumber, and RACV Trades can help.” For more information or to request a quote visit RACV Trades.
ILLICIT TOBACCO DEBATE INTENSIFIES
AS COALITION PROPOSES 80% EXCISE CUT Australia’s illicit tobacco market has become the focus of renewed political debate, with Liberal Senator Dave Sharma backing a Coalition plan to cut tobacco excise by 80 per cent as part of a broader strategy to reduce the profits of organised crime. Senator Sharma argued that the illegal tobacco trade had grown beyond a public health issue and was now closely linked to organised crime, including arson, extortion, violence and money laundering. Under the Coalition’s proposal, the excise component on a standard packet of 20 cigarettes would fall from about $30 to around $6. The Coalition argues that the large price gap between legal and illegal cigarettes has helped create a highly profitable black market, with legal packets often costing around $40 to $50 while illicit cigarettes can be sold for about $15.
Sharma said narrowing that gap would reduce the incentive for smokers to buy from illegal operators and weaken the financial base of criminal networks.
Assistant Minister for Multiculturalism and Senator for NSW - Dave Sharma The Coalition says organised crime groups are making an estimated $4.1 billion to $6.9 billion a year from illicit tobacco and related products. It has also pointed to Victoria, where almost 200 tobaccorelated arson attacks and six
deaths have been linked to the illegal trade. Alongside the excise cut, the Coalition is proposing $200 million in additional lawenforcement funding to target illegal retailers, import networks and criminal syndicates. It also plans to legalise, regulate and tax vapes and nicotine pouches for adults, while maintaining restrictions on sales to minors. The Albanese Government agrees that illicit tobacco has become a serious lawenforcement challenge but has rejected the Coalition’s proposed excise cut as the solution. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler has argued that making legal cigarettes substantially cheaper could undermine longstanding public health efforts to reduce smoking and has said stronger enforcement remains the government’s preferred approach. Recent national data highlight
the complexity of the issue. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s 2025 National Drug Strategy Household Survey found that 34 per cent of people who currently smoke had recently used illicit tobacco, up from 16.7 per cent in 2022–23. At the same time, daily smoking rates continued to fall, reaching 5.6 per cent in 2025, compared with 8.3 per cent in 2022–23 and 19.5 per cent in 2001. The figures show the two sides of the debate: overall smoking rates are continuing to decline, while illicit tobacco use among smokers has increased significantly. For Sharma and the Coalition, reducing the black market’s price advantage is central to the response. The government maintains that organised crime should be tackled without weakening tobacco-control policies designed to discourage smoking.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is urging residents to use spring as an opportunity to reduce fire hazards in and around the home as temperatures rise and summer approaches. Firefighters attended 1,005 residential fires across NSW during spring 2025, and in 45 per cent of those incidents they could not find a working smoke alarm. FRNSW says spring is an important time to remove debris and clutter that could catch fire or block exits during an emergency, while also checking household fire safety equipment and preparing an escape plan. FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said warmer weather brings a different set of fire risks and households should make sure they are properly prepared. He said this includes checking that smoke alarms are working, creating and practising a home escape plan, maintaining barbecues and following basic kitchen safety measures. According to FRNSW, almost 38 per cent of fires last spring started in kitchens and cooking areas. The agency recommends keeping a fire extinguisher and fire blanket near the kitchen, checking LPG barbecue hoses and connections before use, and disposing of barbecue coals safely. Residents are also being encouraged to remove flammable clutter such as newspapers and cardboard from around the home, safely dispose of unwanted hazardous materials and chemicals, and clear leaves and litter from gutters. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, while households are advised to prepare and practise a fire escape plan. If a fire occurs, FRNSW says people should leave the property, stay outside and call Triple Zero (000). The agency is also warning residents to remain cautious with lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in household devices, e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools. Commissioner Fewtrell said damaged lithium-ion batteries can explode and release highly toxic fumes. He advised against charging lithium-ion devices while sleeping or when no one is home, overcharging batteries, or charging devices on surfaces that could catch fire. Large batteries used in e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools should also not be charged in living areas or near exits. FRNSW offers free home fire safety visits, during which firefighters can provide tailored advice, check smoke alarms and, where required, install new alarms free of charge. More information about spring fire safety is available through Fire and Rescue NSW. الوسط ¿ 178ربيع الثاني 1448هـ ¿ أيلول AL WASAT 178 ¿ Rabi' al-Thani 1448 ¿ September 2026

VICTORIA PREPARES FOR A NEW CHAPTER IN MULTICULTURAL AND MULTIFAITH AFFAIRS Victoria is preparing to enter a new chapter in multicultural and multifaith affairs, with Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria (MMV) commencing on 1 October 2026 and replacing the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC). In a message marking the conclusion of the VMC era, Commission Chairperson Louise Perry said the transition brings to a close a chapter spanning decades of engagement and cooperation with Victoria’s multicultural and multifaith communities. Perry said that, when reflecting on the VMC’s work, it was not primarily the programs or policies that stood out, but the people — community leaders, volunteers, faith representatives, young people, elders, advocates and families who shared their stories and worked alongside the Commission. She said the VMC had worked with communities through both periods of celebration and challenge over the past four decades, promoting inclusion and belonging, responding during times of crisis and helping ensure community voices were heard in decisions affecting Victoria. Perry highlighted the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of cooperation between government and communities, pointing to the role played by multicultural and multifaith organisations, community leaders and volunteers in distributing trusted information, supporting vulnerable people and helping communities remain connected. She also referred to her recent participation in Hartalika Teej celebrations

with Victoria’s Nepalese community, while expressing the VMC’s solidarity with the community following devastating monsoon floods in Nepal.
Louise Perry Chairperson Victorian Multicultural Commission
As the VMC prepares to conclude its work in its current form, Perry thanked former commissioners, staff, partners and community leaders who contributed to its legacy, as well as the communities that placed their trust in the Commission and continued to engage with it. She said MMV presented an opportunity to deepen engagement with communities, strengthen partnerships with government and ensure community voices continue to play a role in shaping Victoria’s future. Perry added that the story of multicultural and multifaith Victoria would continue to evolve across neighbourhoods, places of worship, businesses, community organisations and homes as the state enters its next chapter.

HOW WE CAN SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCING BULLYING:
ADVICE FROM ADONGWOT MANYOUL “I’m an older sibling, so seeing young people who need support and don’t know how to go about finding it ignites a spark in me,” says Adongwot Manyoul. “Bullying is so closely linked to discrimination and racism, whether it’s being harassed, verbally attacked, or excluded. All the things that perpetuate feelings of not belonging or not being good enough.” Adongwot is a Cultural Consultant working in anti-racism and cultural safety. Her mission is to help people understand how systems can work for some and against others, and help us recognise our role in changing those systems. Bullying isn’t limited to physical acts and a lot of the time shows itself as small actions that are harder to identify but can be equally damaging. “Young people today seem a lot more confident and less tolerant than they were when I was younger. But the people carrying out these behaviours are also bolder and can now say things online that they wouldn’t necessarily say to your face in real life,” she says. In Adongwot’s experience, a key solution is building communities where young voices can be heard. “Speaking to people you’re connected to can be a good way to start the conversation,” she says. “A lot of young people really just want to see
practical, concrete action to come after reporting or talking about it.” She continues, “Sometimes, a young person might also want to talk to other trusted young people about their experience. It’s important that we also have spaces run by young people for young people.” Her advice is to seek support from those close to you who share your understanding and lived experiences. “It can be your cousins or other relatives and family friends who are a bit older. Lean on them when things get tough.” When an incident has already happened, Adongwot recommends recording the details. “Write down the date, the time, what was said and who said it. When you have that information, you can work with a teacher or other trusted adult to create a plan to move forward.” In her ideal future, everyone has the tools to deal with bullying. “That’s why I do the work that I do,” she says, “because walking into rooms and starting conversations changes something.” The Let’s Stop Bullying campaign aims to build understanding of bullying and other harmful behaviours. Adongwot is a proud anti-bullying advocate. To learn more about available resources, visit LetsStopBullying.gov.au

FAMILY
16
Gift of Kindness
IT TAKES BOTH: WHY PARENTS AND SCHOOLS
MUST WORK TOGETHER By Jamilah Samian www.coolmumsuperdad.com
A child does not stop being part of the family when they enter the school gate, nor do they stop being a student when they return home. Home and school are two of the strongest influences in a child’s life, and what happens in one affects the other. Yet we often treat them as separate worlds. Parents may assume education is the school’s responsibility, while schools may expect parents to handle behaviour and values. When problems arise, both sides may ask who is responsible. A better question is: What can we do together for this child?
Different Pieces of the Same Picture Parents and teachers see different sides of a child. Parents know their temperament, values and struggles. Teachers see how they interact with peers, respond to authority and handle pressure. A child excluded by classmates, for example, may become angry at home. Parents see the anger; teachers see the exclusion. Communication connects the pieces. Ultimately, we are preparing children to become adults who can take responsibility, respect differences and contribute to society. Muslim children are no different. We want them
to become capable, principled adults who are secure in their faith and able to contribute wherever they live. When home and school are in conflict, however, children can become caught in the middle. A school may encourage students to express opinions while parents see the same behaviour as disrespect. A teacher may interpret a Muslim student’s reluctance to join an activity as defiance, while parents assume the school is disregarding their beliefs. Often, a conversation can uncover the misunderstanding.
Even More Important in Non-Muslim-Majority Societies Parent–school partnership becomes even more important for Muslim families in nonMuslim-majority societies, where children may move daily between different beliefs, practices and expectations. At home, they may learn about prayer, Ramadan, modesty, halal and haram, and Islamic values. At school, they may encounter different practices and questions such as: Why do you fast? Why don’t you eat this? Why does your mother wear hijab? These questions are often simply curiosity. The challenge is helping children navigate
differences without becoming unsure of who they are. We do not want children feeling they must become different people in different places: one person at home, another at school, and another among friends. A child may hide questions at home for fear of disappointing their parents while hiding their faith at school for fear of appearing different. Over time, this can create a divided sense of self. Instead, we want an integrated identity: children who know who they are and what they stand for while forming friendships and participating confidently in wider society. Being confidently Muslim and being a contributing member of society should not be competing goals.
Build Bridges, Not Walls Parents can help schools understand aspects of Islam that may be unfamiliar. A teacher may not understand why a student is tired during Ramadan, why prayer matters, or why a family is uncomfortable with an activity. Lack of knowledge does not necessarily mean disrespect. Parents can explain rather than accuse and ask rather than assume. Schools, too, need to listen and recognise parents as partners. Partnership does not require agreement on everything.
Differences may arise over religious accommodation, curriculum, dress, celebrations or other sensitive issues. What matters is how those differences are handled. Children are watching. When they see adults listen, explain, disagree respectfully and find solutions, they learn that conviction and courtesy can coexist. Parent–school partnership is therefore about much more than grades or discipline. For Muslim families in non-Muslim-majority societies, it can become an important bridge between faith, family, school and wider society. Our children should not feel they must choose between being confidently Muslim and participating confidently in the communities around them. Parents and schools have different roles, but the child is their shared concern. The question is: Are we working together to raise children who know who they are, live by their values, and contribute positively to society?
