“People in their 30s and the 40s are emerging as the main cultural consumers, and Girls’ Generation specifically targets the men in that age group,” says Lee Soo-man (53), CEO and producer for SM Entertainment.

“Likewise, Shinee targets women in that generation.”

Lee debuted as a singer in 1971 and was an acclaimed professional emcee in the 1980s. After establishing SM Entertainment, his first major breakthrough came with the “idol” group H.O.T. in 1995. He has been dubbed a star maker, producing Shinhwa, Fly to the Sky, BoA and TVXQ. Lee is especially known for his ability to read the trend just a second ahead of the curve. Taking advantage of his unique skills, Lee is also expanding his business to developing star-related contents. SM Entertainment is involved in over 40 kinds of business, including album wholesales, entertainment agency, publishing, and as well as licensing.

Lee was at the forefront of the Korean Wave that swept all across Asia, defining the K-pop craze when he launched H.O.T. in the Chinese music market, and turned TVXQ and Super Junior into Asia’s top idol groups. BoA, extremely successful in Japan, was his “masterpiece,” borne of what in other sectors is called a examples of localization strategy.

But Lee continues to put particular emphasis on China, which he believes will be the world’s largest entertainment market soon. South Korean pop diva BoA returned Wednesday (Oct. 24) with her ninth album, Woman, and a powerful title track of the same name.

During a showcase in Seoul, BoA spoke about the inspiration behind “Woman. “I know there are times when women feel less confident as they get older,” she said. “So I wanted to share a message of finding our own definition of beauty, and not the one society imposes on us, and becoming confident and great women. My friends and I talk about how we tend to focus on the negative aspects of ourselves when we have so many positive attributes. Because of this, I wanted to express my idea of a confident woman as being someone who focuses on her strengths and making herself a better person rather than dwelling on her weaknesses and trying to become like someone else.” She’s explored the topic of female empowerment on singles in the past, most notably on her 2005 single “Girls on Top” and an album of the same name.

The song was released through a dramatic music video featuring BoA as a leader of women while she performs her characteristically powerful choreography backed by a team of dancers. Some on social media have noted similarities between the video and some of Beyoncé’s work, with certain shots and outfits appearing to emulate those in “Formation,” while the baseball-bat sequence recalls “Hold Up.”

TVXQ! Celebrate 15th

K-pop legends TVXQ! commemorated their 15th anniversary on Wednesday (Dec. 26) with the release of a brand new album and the jazzy leanings of their new single “Truth.”

The lead track on New Chapter #2: The Truth of Love, the follow up to March’s New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love, “Truth” is a rhythmic alt and R&B-tinged dance track that is packed with jazz instrumentals, funky bass, and grooving synths as the pair, U-Know Yunho (Jung Yunho) and Max Changmin (Shim Changmin) layer their smooth vocals over the melody.

“Truth” was co-written by Jacob Luttrell, Kyung Jin Hee of Jam Factory, and Thomas Troelsen, who is best known to fans of TVXQ! as one of the songwriters behind their 2009 hit “Mirotic.”

The song was released alongside a sophisticated music video that features the pair switching off between reflectively singing amid rain showers and moodily lit sets, and serving up sleek choreography. Dance has always been TVXQ!’s strong point, and with the new music video it’s not just the duo that get into the feel of the song, but even their shadows.

TVXQ! got its start in 2003 as a five-member act under SM Entertainment, though have performed as a duo since three members left the team in 2009, and went on to become the biggest boy band in Asia for much of the ‘00s.

In the K-pop world, it’s not atypical for a new act to take a year or two, or three or four, to get a hit before blowing up. But for SHINee, that was never a problem.

SHINee’s latest is an anniversary trilogy of EPs known collectively as The Story of Light. Two albums, respectively known by the name of their singles “Good Evening,” released on May 25, and “I Want You,” dropped on June 11, have already come out -- and a third, fronted by “Our Page,” is planned to conclude the series on June 25.

The four members spoke about Jonghyun’s passing on May 30 in a touching episode of the popular Korean television show Radio Star, but have otherwise largely focused their attention not on the loss, but on the celebratory nature of an album series released in commemoration of their decade together. The name itself, The Story of Light, is a nod to the narrative nature of the trilogy; during a press conference in Seoul earlier this month, the group revealed that the “Good Evening” album represents how the public see SHINee, while the “I Want You” album reflects how they see themselves, while the final “Our Page” release is expected to similarly reflect an alternate point of view of the group. “When you think of SHINee, you think light and colors,” says Key. “I feel that light has lightness and darkness, together. So rather than letting others define what that light is, we want to define what that light represents.

On October 27, f(x) released their fourth album “4 Walls” and took first place on Billboard’s World Album chart. On November 2, Billboard released an article on the K-pop column titled “f(x) Doesn’t Miss a Beat on ‘4 Walls’: Album Review.”

With a focus on their vibrant brand of poppish “red” songs, opting out of the majority of the sleek, R&Binfused “velvet” side of their discography, Red Velvet took to theater venues in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Miami before holding the final date of the U.S. leg of RedMare at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Sunday (Feb. 17).

Throughout the two-and-a-half hour set, the five women performed and interacted with the sold-out, diverse audience.

One of K-pop’s most popular girl groups, Red Velvet’s tour, which sold-out multiple dates, emphasized how few female K-pop teams tour in the U.S. Though RedMare is the second of three K-pop girl group concert series’ set to hit the U.S. in 2018 -- Oh My Girl had a small tour earlier this year and BLACKPINK will hit up arenas this spring -- it is only the fifth-ever tour by a K-pop girl group to hit the States since 2009. Prior to Red Velvet, only Wonder Girls, 2NE1, Apink, and Oh My Girl hosted their own Stateside tours, even though male counterparts, regardless of their level of popularity, and, to a lesser degree, female soloists, regularly host concerts in the U.S.

For years, Red Velvet has been one of the best-selling, and best-charting K-pop acts in the U.S. But it wasn’t until last year that the quintet held their first solo show, a fanmeet, in Chicago. That gig represented their first opportunity to meet their Stateside fans -known as Reveluv -- in an intimate setting. But with their recently completed RedMare concert series, which took them to five cities throughout the country for six nights of shows, Wendy, Seulgi, Joy, Irene, and Yeri were able to bring their addicting brand of dance-pop to much bigger American audiences.

NCT is a South Korean boy group formed by SM Entertainment. Their name stands for the Hallyu localization project Neo Culture Technology, a term coined by SM founder Lee Soo-man to describe the group’s concept of having an unlimited number of members divided into multiple sub-units based in various cities worldwide.

On December 31, 2018, SM Entertainment announced NCT’s fourth unit, “WayV (威神V)”. The unit is based in China and consists of 7 members: Kun, Winwin, Ten, Lucas, Hendery, Xiaojun, and Yangyang. WayV is managed under LABEL V, a Chinese label collaborating with SM’s production.

The unit officially debuted on January 17, 2019 with a Chinese version of NCT 127’s “Regular”.

NCT 127 is the second sub-unit and Seoul-based unit of the South Korean boy group NCT. The unit debuted on July 7, 2016, with their first extended play NCT #127, featuring ten members: leader Taeyong, Taeil, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark, Haechan, Johnny, Doyoung and Jungwoo. Johnny and Doyoung were later added in December to the line up, followed by Jungwoo in September 2018.

On April 4, 2016, SM Entertainment announced NCT’s first unit, NCT U (the “U” standing for United), which at the time consisted of six members: Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark. NCT U released digital singles “The 7th Sense” (Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark) on April 9 and “Without You” in two versions on April 10 (a Korean version sung by Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun, and a Chinese version with the addition of SM Rookies’ Kun).

On August 18, SM announced that NCT’s third unit would be called NCT Dream. The unit debuted with seven members: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung. Their first single “Chewing Gum” was released on August 24, and the group had their debut performance on M Countdown the next day.

After scoring their first-ever Billboard 200 album entry in October with Regular-Irregular, NCT 127 earn their next chart accomplishment with new single “Simon Says.”

The boy band’s electro/hip-hop/pop hybrid single debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart giving the group their first chart-topper on the list. “Simon Says” sold 2,000 copies and logged 2.1 million on-demand U.S. streams (audio and video combined), according to Nielsen Music, for the week ending Nov. 30. It marks one of the band’s best sales week for a single, but the result does not surpass “Regular” which sold 3,000 copies when it debuted at No. 2 on World Digital Song Sales in October.

NCT 127 Score First No. 1 on World Digital Song Sales With ‘Simon Says’ NCT 127 is now the 13th K-pop act to land a No. 1 single on World Digital Song Sales and just the fourth boy band. Among male outfits, only BIGBANG, BTS, and EXO have ruled the ranking.

Among the boy bands, NCT 127 earned their first No. 1 the fastest after debut, scoring the top slot just over two years after their July 2016 debut.

Both “Simon Says” and “Welcome to My Playground” are featured on Regulate: The 1st Album Repackage, which acts as a deluxe re-release of the Regular-Irregular album. The new LP debuts at No. 15 on Billboard’s World Albums chart to mark the group’s sixth entry on the chart.
