Introduction

2.73 is a project for the city of Venice and its resilient residents that draws inspiration from the significant data on the average stay spent by a tourist in the historic city (Yearbook of Tourism 2016).

2.73 focuses on the theme of living - i.e. staying in a place -, starting from the peculiar lifestyle dictated by the uniqueness of the urban context. Specifically, it questions the possibility of setting up a widespread system of mixed hospitality, between the traveller (new resident) and the resident, characterised by the double role of the latter as both a facilitator of the cohabitation process as well as a prosumer (1) of a city programme of spontaneous (but not only) cultural activities. This to attract new inhabitants and increase job and professional opportunities not only specifically related to the tourism sector.

The inhabiting style proposed by venetian's prototype, how written by Carlo Infante, "goes beyond the formula of cohousing to experience a new relationship between resident and traveller: it is a vital, simple strategy based on the principle of better with less”. Furthermore, in the Giacomo Maria Salerno thoughts, the possibility of hybridising the residential space with other productive functions means to reactivate in some way - in the form of the house-atelier - one of the most representative elements of the Venetian tradition such as the housefondaco.

The prototype of resident resilient's house combines the typology of New York Factory (Iñaki Ábalos) with the Small Office /Home Office - SOHO concept conceived by the japanese architect Riken Yamamoto. It intends to harmonise "the variety and unpredictability of uses associated with a lifestyle that tends to bring private and public life closer together" (Stefano Guidarini) with the residential productivity that Andrea Branzi defines with the term incubator, relationship developer.

The workshop

Who are our favourite neighbours, and how do they make us feel better?

Inhabiting Hostly Spaces was selected as part of the GENS Public Programme at the 19. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura della Biennale di Venezia, Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective. curated by Carlo Ratti. The workshop will be scheduled on September 30, 2025, at the Speakers' Corner settled up into the Corderie dell'Arsenale.

Inspired by the values of the 2.73 project, this workshop explores hospitality and co-habitation through simple paper models. Participants work in small groups to imagine a building prototype, balancing co-living areas, private spaces, and hosting zones—reimagining the citizen as a prosumer of shared living environments.

How to partecipate

The workshop is open to: students; artists or groups of artists; representatives of cultural institutions or associations; professionals in the fields of hospitality, housing emergencies, and social housing; and citizens and activists from the local, national, and international scene.

This call for applications will select 32 workshop participants. Applications should be submitted exclusively by email to ag@bellinatogiacomazzi.it by midnight on September 21, 2025. The email should include: the candidate's first and last name; email address and mobile phone number; and, if applicable, the name of the university/institution/cultural association attended/represented. Admission to the Exhibition (ticket) is included with participation in the workshop.

Selection

Applications will be evaluated in two phases:

The coordinators will initially select a shortlist of up to 40 candidates. Subsequently, 32 participants will be identified from the shortlist.

The selection results will be communicated via email by September 26, 2025. Both selection phases will be at the sole discretion of the workshop promoters/coordinators.

The selection of participants and the coordination of the workshop will be carried out by: Luca Barello (Atelier Mobile aps), Ludovico Da Prato (Fondazione Housing Sociale), Alvise Giacomazzi (B_G Studio), and Sabina Lenoci (IUAV University of Venice).

For both phases, the main selection criterion adopted will take into account the desire to create two heterogeneous working groups based on the candidates' age and backgrounds/interests.

Schedule and Procedure

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at the Speakers' Corner settled up into the Corderie dell'Arsenale in Venice.
