Biodesign goes further than other biology-inspired approaches to design and fabrication. Unlike biomimicry, cradle to cradle, and the popular but frustratingly vague “green design”. Our design goal is to incorporate living organism into the design as building blocks, material sources, energy generators, digital storage system and so on. Biodesign can also be a means of communication and discovery, a way to provoke debate and explore the potential opportunities.

CLIENT: ALYSSA MONKS Water is a recurring element in her work. It shows mystery and curiosity. She started with bathtub, studied how the filter of water changed the texture of clothing, skin and hair. Then, she used Vaseline, glass shower door, steam and water droplets. She also added flour to bathwater to make it more opaque, and also cooking oil to float on top the water to create various effects. “ I choose to paint people i know, love and feel connected to so that i can create an emphathic experience” Far from the bustle of city, her outdoor inspiration made her understand what she wanna paint is connection, stilness and quietness.

UNITY Malaysia has been united as a nation over the six decades. Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, undergone major physical changes during the nation-building era where important institutional buildings, state mosque, national stadium, museum and monument were erected. During 19551965, ‘Building UNITY’ was the core mission behind the creation of nationalist landscape and identity in Kuala Lumpur. Among the significant buildings are: Malaysian House of Parliament – National Monument National Mosque / Lake Garden (Perdana Botanical Gardens) Stadium Merdeka Stadium Negara Muzium Negara Dewan Bahasa Pustaka Post Office (Pos Malaysia Headquarter) These buildings play a significant role in helping the nation to form a Malaysian architectural modernity and discourse.

Based on the given boundary of study site, we collected data by visiting the buildings and places, with reflective thinking on the elements/ expressions of ‘UNITY’ that to be discovered/uncovered from the journey. inter-relationships between architecture and urban scenarios generate numerous narratives.

THE CYCLE OF PAPER I expressed my creative imagination and understanding of ‘UNITY’ through a sculpture design A single piece of paper reveals the presence of the “interbeing” of the whole universe. It is a perception of unity through interconnectnedness.

Theres is a cloud floating in this sheet of paper. Without the cloud; without rain, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, we cannot make paper.

Hence, the interbeing of cloud and paper externalize the idea of continuous elements unite the PROCESS. Now, look into the process, take the sheet of paper be part of our perception, you see the implicit idea of the segregation branch and the bench. This shows that the material unites the process of the producing the bench, even though their form is segregated by TIME.

AU2 ROLPOP COMMUNITY Kampung Datuk Keramat is located in district of Ampang in Selangor. Keramat’s residents are one of the urban poor community within KL city. According to ketua kampung, there was quite frequent in reported crime activities in the community in the past.

AU2 ROLPOP COMMUNITY GARDEN In the year 2015, the community has launched their self-initiated community garden by Klang river and has vast improvement in community bonding and village security. This community garden not only raise awareness of river pollution issue to the community, but also function as a key element to improve the security of the kampung.

“THE EXTENSION” Mant extensions and ammenities are found in Au2 Taman Keramat. Although some of them are illegal but they play important role in the people’s lifestyle.

Extensions in the village is not a disturbance, but a need to the community that ”unites” , such as some extended built “pondok”. This is what we are contributing to the kampung, extending the village exposure to the city, in order to sustain the kampung

CRAFTING “PURA TANJUNG SABTU A royal Malay retreat that is unique in Malaysia, Pura Tanjung Sabtu is a stunning traditional complex of elaborately carved timber houses located in Tanjung Sabtu in the East Coast Malaysian state of Terengganu.

It gained quiet acclaim and praise from international art researchers, conservators and architectural historians.

Recognized for its unique resurrection as a successful, empathetic synthesis of a rural Malay homestead adapted for modern commercial use. Meticulously crafted and lovingly tended through private means, Pura Tanjung Sabtu itself is vested in the dedicated care of Tengku Ismail Tengku Su, a scion of the Terengganu ruling family. Eleven unique timber houses were successfully salvaged and painstakingly restored through Tengku Ismail’s effort, with the help and support of local carpenters and craftsmen whose own trades are gradually dying.

However, Tengku Ismail’s passing in the year of 2013 has left the place derelict and dilapidated. We shall document the spirit of the place and local artisans in the east coast of Malaysia (Kelantan and Terengganu) to inspire us for the future of crafting & architecture.

CRAFTING SKIN The design language is then adapted and reinterpreted in the development of an “architectural skin” that is suitable for the tropical building element.

With the advancement of new technologies, new designs can be achieved with its boundaries redefined such as exploration with different local materials. New construction and manufacturing processes have made the return of ornamentation economically viable.

SINGGORA TILES The movement of human footwork contributes to the strength of singgora tiles.

Meanwhile during the site visit, te collapse singgora roof tiles drew my attention, it triggered some reflection of “collapsing is not an failure but a new form”. It gives me an intention to breakthrough ordinary flat arrangement and gives a movement to the singgora tiles.

In order to preserve, maintain, and sustain the development of the ceramic art, a community cultural center project is established to revive the traditional arts by providing an architectural solution as a contemporary visual and material culture that continue to serve the community as a place for craft execution, self-expression, Innovation, cultural education, and also a venue of spending free time.

New building is formed of 3 blocks of building, which serves as the main public area, such as cafeteria, exhibition hall, library, and amphitheatre.

While the heritage building is successfully preserved and re-functioning after being deserted for years, the new buildings are actually built to serve as an “spatial extension” that support the functions of PTS instead of being apart as a new building.

Hence, the connection and transition between the new and old building are the focus points of my design strategies in order to give a good and continuous experiences

FROG HILL, PENANG We are looking into the unique geographical condition of ‘Frog Hills’, formerly known as ‘Bukit Katok’, mispronounced as Bukit Katak – hence its current name. Frog hills is a recent publicly discovered gem, an abandoned quarry hidden within the rural conditions along its parameter with its existence ignored until recent.

It is said that the quarry used to be a rubber plantation before the land extraction activities took place in the 70’s. Until about a decade ago when the land extraction activities were put to a halt, the area was left untouched and ‘ignored’ due to its remote location that even many locals were unaware of its existence.

THE REVOLVING “ECOSPHERE” On the first sight on the Bukit Katok, everything seems harmony. It is like formed in pieces, floating on the water, but connected with chains, so that they would stay balance on the river. Just like people tie the boats together to reduce the shakiness that would have caused sea sick.

Same goes to the ecosystem around the frog hill. No matter how the activities and nature of the site change, the ecosystem typically recover back to a stage of ecological balance. Hence, it takes the word “ecosphere”, a self-sustaining miniature world.

Before the mining stage, there were rubber plantation, a space for human and jungle living.During the mining stage, there are human and mining team that maintain the output of mining. After the quarry activities gone, the site was deserted and the rocks lose stable and not rigorous at all, and the quarry holes are left empty. Years later, water returned to the site and starting to bring back the ecosystem before quarry stage. There was sign of plant growing during this buffer period.

10 years later, the growing of plants recover in a healthy status and live together with water and the ground. And maybe, it will repeat again, but we don’t know when it is, but water still remain on the same level all the time, metaphor the ecological balance.

The status of the site also express the idea of equilibrium, when the plants exist on the top, the ground might exist on the bottom of the water. While the base reflect the bottom part to show the status of lake. These are to show that water is always the timeless element that maintain the equilibrium of the ecosystem.

MANIFESTO - SITE ISSUE However, water has become a main risk of the Abandoned quarry lake, and also create other concealed site risks. Abandoned quarry lake is always dangerous due to the shape of land, the depth of lake, the lake water condition.

Risks are always unpredictable, the model gives a summarised idea of, we are taking different kind of risks while in different conditions, and they are all random and unpredictable.

Hence, a RISK EXTREME PARK is proposed to bring in density and population in order to revive the abandoned Bukit Katok. There are more than 300 quarry lakes in the entire Malaysia, the news of drowning in quarry lake has been a lot , hence, The intention of the theme of RISK is to encourage people to experience risk in order the create awareness of the danger of quarry lake. And it is actually good to take risk in certain condition, Because to know the risk, we should experience the risk; to achieve higher, we should take the risk to elevate to the state of fantastic.

BUILDINGS 3 main park zoning is proposed on the existing site. Theme park zone, consists of Risk theme park and family friendly Aquapark. Village park serves the recreational purpose for visitors and entrepenuership purpose for the locals, which consists of bike track, boat market, outdoor food market, camping site and outlets. Resort zone are having floating resort and ground resort.

CIRCULATION Visitors drive along this raised up sky walk, a playful new develop theme park will be seen on the right side, while on the atmosphere on their left is more to reflect the local community culture.

The sky walks tends to split the two parks, gives an overview to the site planning. Bike track is created for the local teenager cyclists. The broad walk is function as pedestrian and buggy drive way.

PROJECT STATEMENT The theme park project tends to achieve the following goals, brings in density and local friendly population• and raise the awareness of the risk management. Hence a project scope of risk experience, and risk management is proposed, which the new architecture solution has included experiencing, visiting and training program. The target end users will be the extreme sports lover, workshop participants in between the age of 16 to 40, visiting family and also local community which focus on providing entrepenuership and job opportunity to them.

BUILDING STRATEGY RESPOND TO THE SITE The Building Massing is inspired by the shape of terrain in the site.

The Slanted Chengal Column allow the building to raise the main spaces from the ground and water level, in order to appreciate the beauty of terrain by having minimal development on the existing ground.

The Slope architecture form was created in different height ratio according to the function of spaces. B E I R U T P O R T, L E B A N O N Recionstruction of Beirut Port : August 4, 2020, 18:08:18 EEST marked the Zero hour of one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions in history with the force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake – and is believed to have been fueled by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in warehouse-12 at the port.

Aside from the mass destruction caused by this explosion, at least 204 people were killed (with an additional 3 missing) and 6,500 were injured. Above all, Beirut-the capital that was spawned by its harbor as the focal Middle Eastern node point that connected many continents has been left with a dead Port.

The mission of the new architecture proposal is to bring back the port’s competitive aptness in its context in order to further engage in the world trading markets.

< Assemble to Assembly , community activation > is a project coinitiated by Colllab, a architecture research lab in SABE and leader of Kampung Keramat, with the supported grant by Khind Starfish Foundation and from the fundraising of the community.

This project is to build a public library for children of Kg Datuk Keramat within their community garden, aim to provide a gathering space for the residents close to community garden, especially the children from Kampung Datuk Keramat. It shall provide a good education starter : toys, reading and maker space for the children , while easing the worries of parents that would like to work in the community farm .

In this build project, i was assgined as the

project leader. This is my first time to engage in a live build project. My task was to schedule the entire project from among our team to the diplomatic aspects.

For this project library, we have research and develop this community library with digital fabrication (CNC cut easy-assemble plywood joinery system), to allow villagers to be involve in the building assembling process with us for the knowledge exchange. For this to happen we will organise some workshop prior and during the building of Keramat Library, to incur knowledge sharing and community bonding.

Upon the pilot built of this digital fabricated structure, we hope to open source the methodology and research more in-depth into the possibility of disaster & community relief architecture.
