The Telescopic Mosaicis a collaborative project between Alvin Kwek andFaith Yeo, to design a performativefacade that can adapt to climatic conditions in real timewhilemaintainingvisual intrigue. The design was derived from combining boththe egg crate andlight shelfprinciples to regulate rain, and daylighting conditions, while optimising for views and wind With that in mind, ourmainkinetic system will regulatethe climatic conditionsthroughthedepth of theaperture, similar to that of a telescope

Through rigorousexperimentation, theaperture size, depth, arrangement, and side profiles were carefully considered inrelation to the light needs of a room. The final design was condenseddown into 3 modes that react based on the 3 sky conditions mainly experienced inSingapore - clear skies, cloudyand overcast With these parameters set, the final design isable to regulate an ideal lux range within all theseconditions The finaliterationof the design consists of aninteractive furniture base and climatically responsive top portion, thatsharesthe samearchitectoniclanguageandmechanism to function.

When implementing thedesign to the school we were allocated, we prioritise visual cohesion; blendingthedesign to the side of the building naturallywhile ensuringthe climatic response of the facadeisnotcompromised Thearrangement of apertures and side profile were adjusted accordingly to the dimensionsof the roomand the qualityoflight we intended for the space. In all, The TelescopicMosaicis was anexperimental design concept to reinvent tried and truedaylighting strategieswith a technological moderntwist, to better adapt to our new idealsonenvironmental passive design
