Preamble SALE DATE AND PRIOR INSPECTION TIME: The sale will commence at 1pm on Saturday, 13 June 2015. All weather undercover shelter is provided. Tenterfield has many excellent hotel and motel accommodation choices if required. The cattle can be inspected by appointment made with the agents or vendors, at ‘Coldawinda’ on Saturday the 30 May 2015 and also from 10am on the morning of the sale. Complimentary lunch and refreshments will be available on sale day. SELLING SYSTEM: Sale of animals will be conducted under normal auction terms and conditions. Please check with the Selling Agents to obtain a buyer’s number if you are considering making a purchase. Please supply your PIC to the Agents. Successful purchasers are requested to give written advice to the Selling Agents, regarding transport arrangements, at the conclusion of the sale. All animals are sold exclusive of GST. INSURANCE: Is available from the agents on the day. We do recommend you take insurance out on your purchases. DIRECTIONS: ‘Coldawinda’ is located 4kms south east of Tenterfield on Scrub Road. When in Tenterfield, turn East off the New England Hwy at Clifton Street, on the southern end of town (at Hilliers Nissan Car Dealers). Travel one block then turn right at the T intersection onto Scrub Road and travel 4kms on bitumen to ‘Coldawinda’ on your right. HERD HEALTH: All sale bulls have been tested negative PI (Persistently Infected) and have been vaccinated annually against Pestivirus with Pestigard vaccine. All sale bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1 (for Clostridial and Lepto), Vibrio and 3 Day Sickness vaccine. We recommend annual boosters. Johnes Disease: Alumy Creek Angus has tested negative and been part of the National Johnes Disease Market Assurance Program (JDMAP) for more than 20 years at MN3 level. We have elected to opt out of the JDMAP program pending the current review to the National Program. Our current herd status is MN1 Beef Protected Area and our bulls are eligible to enter all herds and states without further testing except WA. (Crossing Papers required for Qld.) Cattle Tick: Alumy Creek Angus is located in a cattle tick free area. MANAGEMENT: Alumy Creek sale bulls are all quiet, well mannered cattle and are used to being handled on foot, with ATV Bikes and vehicles. They are used to being worked by dogs. All Alumy Creek sale bulls carry a freeze brand for easy identification in the paddock. They are rigorously screened for temperament. FERTILITY: All bulls have passed a physical examination and microscopic crush side semen test. GUARANTEE: All bulls are sold with a six month guarantee as a calf getter. The guarantee is valid for a period of six months from the date of sale. The vendor must receive a written notification together with a certificate from a registered veterinarian stating the nature of the infertility before the expiration of that period. Animals injured or lost as a result of accident, negligence or any disease, are not covered by this guarantee. Vendor liability relating to fertility claims will not exceed the purchase price of the animal and are limited to a credit equal to the purchase price less the salvage value which may be utilized to purchase a suitable replacement from a future Alumy Creek sale. RECESSIVE CATTLE GENETIC CONDITIONS: The DNA test status of all sale bulls for Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Fawn Calf Syndrome (CA) and Developmental Duplications (DD) is shown for each Lot. All the bulls in the sale are free by test (AM/NHF) or pedigree (AM/ NH/DDFU) of the potentially lethal and economically impacting recessive genetic conditions AM, NH and DD. DD is a current issue for many Angus herds- particularly those selecting solely on Long Fed $ Index EBVs. CA status is listed for each Lot but has not shown to be of economic impact. AM, NH or DD (AMC, NHC or DDC) carrier bulls are not recommended for use in any cattle herd where the genetic status of the cow herd is not known or if breeding replacements may be kept. 2015 Alumy Creek Angus Bull Sale Welcome to our Annual on property Angus Bull Sale. We feel this year’s draft of 45 two year old bulls contains some of the best outcross genetic bulls we have bred to date. The bulls are consistent right across the draft displaying plenty of length, natural muscle, thickness and easy finishing ability. The Sires of the bulls this year continue to be some of the best global genetics available. They offer significant genetic outcrosses for those breeders (like us) who are concerned at the narrowing of the Australian Angus genetic pool in recent years. They are balanced EBV trait leaders within the Angus breed and will suit any Angus market. Many of the bulls in our sale today represent some of the oldest sons available of these sires in Australia. Our aim is to produce short gestation length, easy calving Angus bulls that are long, heavy muscled and easy doing to sire calves that weigh on the scales because that is what our customers are paid on. We select to breed Angus cattle that can produce a profit under commercial conditions. We also expect our bulls to have a good temperament and be easy to work with and our clients always comment on this. Because we retain the sisters to the bulls we sell, the mature cow size of our cattle must be sustainable in our harsh grazing environment. We also apply stiff selection pressure for fertility and our heifers must calve as 2 year olds unassisted and must continue to go back in calf quickly to produce a calf each and every year- positive fats EBVs will assist to do this. The cows that go in calf early and quickly have the oldest heaviest calf when it comes to weaning and kilos are what the industry still pays for. We breed for balanced performance, knowing cattle with good EBV figures can also have great structure and temperament. We don’t select for single trait selection or just to add up the highest EBV numbers. We use EBVs as a tool and not as our only selection mechanism for genetics.

Our selection for growth and carcase produces cattle that can achieve extra performance kilos on grass in the paddock and with the potential to access flexible feedlot markets as the season may dictate. The 2015 sale draft includes bulls by Connealy Final Product and his son MCATL Pure Product, Connealy Impression and the homebred sire Alumy Creek In Focus E04 a Mytty In Focus x Yellowstone from our top performing Alumy Creek Cow family, as well as new season sires the $235K sale topper Connealy Earnan, the calving ease specialist Basin Excitement and feedlot performers EXAR Upshot and Flag Cross Country. TC Aberdeen, the outcross genetics performer has one last son in the catalogue. Connealy Final Product was appreciated last year for his outstanding correct structure and muscle pattern, added length and depth of body with easy doing, easy finishing ability. He offers balanced EBV performance and is very fat positive which is a godsend in seasons like we have just had—cattle will finish easier and importantly his daughters will go back in calf sooner so PTIC rates are higher. Many producers are just realizing that consistently selecting for negative fats can have a big economic impact in breeder herd performance. Final Product offspring are born easily—we used him for 2 years as our heifer bull with no issues. Calving ease, super low birth wt with several thousand progeny in the US and his Australian EBVs have continued to improve as more calves are recorded here. His heifers performed well and raised good calves in a difficult season. We retained and used a son with our heifers last year. Lot 10 NKEJ06 offers balanced top 5% performance over 12 EBV traits. Final Product is the sire of Lots 4, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 22 and 32. MCATL Pure Product is a Final Product powerhouse son with only 33 progeny in Australia. We used him as a sleep easy heifer bull and found them to be easily born, early calves that matured into easy finishing, thick, heavy weighing, well-muscled, attractive, correct bulls. Pure Product offers top 1% growth and is the sire of Lots 9, 11, 14 and 25.

Connealy Impression we like so much we have used him for three seasons. Impressions are focused on commercial traits—they are born easily, grow quickly and weigh heavy. His heifers are deep bodied standouts that do a terrific job on their calves— Lot 2 is out of an Impression heifer. His sons are longer, larger framed, well-muscled bulls that hold condition in the paddock. In the US, Impression ranks highly for Tenderness, Feed Efficiency and Total Profit—drivers that make a difference to your bottom line. Impression is a trait leader for growth, Carcase Weight and Yield. He gives real performance genetics under commercial conditions with a proven pedigree and calving ease. He is the sire of Lots 35, 36, 37, 38, and 40. New season sire Connealy Earnan sold for $235K in 2012 and this year we offer some of the oldest sons in Australia. We find the Earnans to be thick, deep, easy finishing cattle, very well-muscled, a quiet temperament with good soft skin and hair type (which links to easy keeping cattle). We really like his progeny for their real world commercial attributes. Lot 3 NKEJ88 is an outstanding son from our best cow family. Earnan is the sire of Lots 3, 13, 15, 21 and 23. Flag Cross Country is another new season sire by the popular BT Crossover (sire of Silverias Conversion who sired many of the southern high seller bulls this year). They are moderate framed well-muscled thick bulls with commercially orientated balanced carcase traits. Lot 5 NKEJ48 is a very good thick muscled son that ticks all the boxes in an attractive package. Cross Country is the sire of Lots 5, 12, 24, 26, 29, 43 and 44. EXAR Upshot needs no introduction. He is a great allrounder with calving ease, growth, muscle, yield and his calves are a very consistent type and style, wellstructured and have added performance on grass or grain with a better temperament than his popular sire. He is the sire of Lots 7, 8, 18 and 42.

Basin Excitement is our new calving ease sire. His calves come early, are born easily and really grow fast. Plus they finish easy and weigh heavy. These are some the oldest calves in Australia, offer excellent outcross genetics and will add extra value to your heifers calves or weight to your cows. He is already a trait leader for short GL and growth. His sons have great smooth shoulders and Lot 2 NKEJ40 (on the cover) is a standout son. He is the sire of Lots 2, 27, 28, 31, 34, 39 and 41. Alumy Creek In Focus E04 our homebred sire combines the calving ease and growth of Mytty In Focus with added carcase performance. He has produced some very attractive well-muscled sons all with a very quiet temperament. He has a terrific quiet young son in Lot 1 NKE95 and is the sire of Lots 1, 16, 30 and 45. The bulls have been raised under some tough seasonal conditions last year and powered away when the season broke at Xmas. They are paddock raised, supplemented with Finlay Texas hay since weaning and they present in good forward condition to go straight out and work for you. Alumy Creek sired cattle have again performed well in the paddock, saleyards and weaner sales with top weights and prices in 2015. Earnan was the $235K record high selling bull at the 2011 Connealy Bull sale. His progeny have a great quiet temperament, are very smooth wide topped extra muscle calves. We just want to keep using him we like his calves that much they have so much appeal. These bulls are some of the oldest Earnans and first to be offered for sale.

Final Product was selected for the low birth wt, calving ease sire with curve bending growth he has shown to be in the US. He is already a trait leader for short Gestation Length, Growth and EMA. This is coupled with a heavy muscle pattern and more importantly Positive Fats. These cattle finish easily and quickly to give market flexiblity when you need it and your cows rebreed back in calf much quicker- all really important profit drivers when the seasons get tough. Final Products are structurally correct heavy muscled power bulls that add kilos where it counts for your pocket and finish ability to your calves. We continue to be impressed with his calves.

We love our Impression calves. They do all the things Connealy cattle are known for- easily born, with rapid birth to yearling growth and terrific EMA & muscling plus the heifers have done a great job on their calves and bred back in calf quickly. Impression is already a Trait Leader for growth and muscle and top 1% for yield. In the US he ranks Top 10% for Total Profit, Tenderness and 25% for Feed Efficiency. His progeny are simply impressive, hold their condition well in the paddock. The bulls cover a lot of country and his heifers are peas in a pod.

Cross Country offers a great calving ease pedigree, with attractive performance and thick muscling type. A daughter was an Ekka Class winner last year for us and both his bulls and heifers show great promise and are very functional moderate type cattle with great thickness, hindquarter setup and good carcase performance.

Pure Product is one of the most proven US sons of Final Product. He is a true power bull producing cattle with muscle, mass and performance with positive fats & low birthwt/ calving ease.We used him as a heifer bull and been very happy with his progeny. We have found them to be well structured easy doing, very attractive cattle- with the outcross Final Product/ WAR Alliance bloodlines, there have only been 33 calves registered in Australia. These bulls will produce calves that grow fast to weaning/ yearling and finish very easily.

CALVING EASE TRAITS Calving Ease (DIR): estimate of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their calves from 2 year old heifers to be born unassisted. Higher, more +ive, Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are more favourable. Calving Ease (DTRS): estimates of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their 2 year old daughters to calve without assistance. Higher, more +ive, Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are more favourable. Gestation Length: estimate of genetic differences among animals in the number of days from the date of conception until the calf birth date. Lower, or more -ive, Gestation Length EBVs are generally more favourable. Birth Wt: estimate of genetic differences between animals in kg of calf birth weight. Calf birth weight is the biggest contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers. While low Birth Wt EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also often associated with lower growth potential. Small, or moderate, Birth Wt EBVs are more favourable. FERTILITY TRAITS Days to Calving (DC): estimate of genetic differences among in female fertility, expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. Females with shorter DC EBVs tend to commence cycling earlier after calving and conceive earlier in the joining period. They also tend to attain puberty at a younger age as heifers. Lower, or more -ive, Days to Calving EBVs are more favourable. Scrotal Size: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in scrotal circumference at 400 days of age. Increased scrotal size is associated with increased semen production in bulls, and earlier age at puberty of bull and heifer progeny. Larger, or more +ive, Scrotal Size EBVs are more favourable. GROWTH TRAITS 200-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 200 days of age. This is a measure of an animal’s early growth to weaning. It is an important trait for breeders turning off animals as vealers or weaners. 400-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 400 days of age. This is an important trait for breeders turning off animals as yearlings. 600-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in live-weight at 600 days of age. This is an important trait for breeders targeting the production of animals suited for heavy weight grass finished or grain fed market MATERNAL TRAITS Milk: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in milk production potential, expressed through variation in calf growth performance. Larger, more +ive, or moderate, Milk EBVs can be more favourable, depending on the environment. Mature Cow Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in cow weight at 5 years of age.

Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are predictions of an animal’s genetic merit, based on available performance data on the individual and its relatives. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as +ive or -ive differences from the breed base. As the breed base is set to a historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic change within the breed. The current breed averages are shown below. These averages provide a useful benchmark for comparing EBVs for animals.

UNDERSTANDING ACCURACIES The accuracy associated with an EBV gives an indication of its reliability, and the likely extent of its possible change as more information becomes available. As more data becomes available on animals (or its progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of its EBVs for particular traits will increase. Accuracies are influenced by the heritability of traits and the genetic associations existing between them. For lowly heritable traits, more information is required to achieve a similar accuracy to that of highly heritable traits. Accuracies are expressed as percentages. The higher the percentage, the greater the chance that the EBV is a close estimate of the animal’s true genetic merit, and the less likelihood that the EBV will change as more information becomes available.
TRAITS OBSERVED Indicates the traits that have been recorded for a particular animal and are contributing to the EBVs that have been calculated. These will appear directly below the table displaying the animals EBVs.
CARCASE TRAITS Carcase Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in hot standard carcase weight at 750 days of age. Larger, more +ive, Carcase Weight EBVs are more favourable. EMA: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in eye muscle area (cm2) at the 12/13th rib site on a 400kg carcase. Larger, more +ive, EMA EBVs are generally more favourable. Rib Fat: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in fat depth (mm) at the 12/13th rib site, measures on a 400kg carcase. More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals. Rump Fat: estimate of genetic differences among animals in fat depth at the P8 rump site on a standard 400kg carcase. More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals. IMF%: estimate of genetic differences among animals in percentage intra-muscular fat (marbling) in a 400kg carcase. EFFICIENCY TRAITS Net Feed Intake (NFI): estimate of the genetic differences between animals in efficiency. NFI is measured either post weaning (NFI-P), in young bulls and heifers, fed at around 300 days of age, or in steers fed at around 560 days of age (NFI- F). Lower, more negative (–ive) NFI EBVs are more favourable. TEMPERAMENT TRAITS Docility: estimate of genetic differences between animals in temperament. Docility EBVs are expressed as differences in the percentage of progeny that will be scored with acceptable temperament (ie. either "docile" or "restless"). Higher Docility EBVs are more favourable. $INDEX VALUES Angus Breeding: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow, joined in a typical commercial self-replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular production system or market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems. The index is particularly suited to commercial producers who sell progeny into different markets, or to seedstock producers supplying bulls to commercial clients who produce for a range of different production systems and market end points. Domestic: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting the domestic supermarket trade, with progeny finished using either grass, grass supplemented by grain or grain finishing systems. Heavy Grain: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting pasture grown steers with a 200 day feedlot finishing period for the grain fed high quality, highly marbled markets. Heavy Grass: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting pasture finished heavy steers.

Terms and conditions of sale • Terms are strictly cash or approved cheque on the day of sale, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Auctioneer before the fall of the hammer. • Subject to the reserve price, the highest bidder shall be the purchaser. • In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall be the sole arbitrator and his decision shall be final. • The auctioneer may refuse to accept any bid, which, in his opinion, is not in the best interest of the vendor and shall have the right to refuse any such bid without giving any reason. • Where the vendor reserves the right to bid at the auction in respect of a lot and instructs the auctioneer to make more than one bid on his behalf, the auctioneer shall, prior to submitting the lot for sale by auction, announce in a clear and precise manner the number of bids reserved by the vendor in respect to that lot. • A bidder shall be deemed to be a principal unless, prior to the bidding, he has given to the auctioneer copy of written authority to bid for or on behalf of a person. • The last price called by the auctioneer shall be the amount at which the lot has been sold. • A bid cannot be made or accepted after the fall of the hammer. • All lots will be at the purchaser’s risk immediately after the fall of the hammer and no responsibility will be incurred by the auctioneer or vendor for their safekeeping.
