ASL have an in-house CAD Draftsperson who can interpret the Architect’s drawings and provide “Shop” drawings to assist your on-site personnel with an understanding of how to install specific details.

Take-offs ASL can assist you with your take-offs and calculating the quantity, size and price of the extrusions required for the project. This is an excellent way to check your own work minimizing the risk and cost of errors.

Site Visits ASL can assist you with site visits to check your installation staff are installing the joinery correctly and assist with training for your installation staff if they are not.

Bracing Plans ASL can provide marked bracing plans for consent purposes, or for use as a guidance for construction professionals. These can also be retained for building inspections to ensure efficiency, compliance, and consistency.

GLASS THICKNESS ASL’s profiles are suitable for glass of thicknesses ranging from 6mm – 13mm for laminated glass. For information on glass thickness and compliance with the New Zealand Building Code requirements refer to “NZS 4223.3:2016 - Human Impact Safety Requirements” which can be found on the WGANZ website.

GLASS STC RATINGS Glass STC rating is a measure of how well the glass reduces sound transmission, with the higher rating meaning a greater reduction in sound transmission. Glass often makes up the largest area of an opening, this means the glass chosen will heavily affect the overall STC rating of the opening. Glass STC ratings can be provided by your glass manufacturer; however, we have compiled a list below of average expected STC ratings for the common types of glass.

GLAZING INSTALLATION Glass should be installed so that there is no contact between the glass panel and the aluminium frame as any movement due to thermal expansion can cause breakage if the aluminium and glass are touching. For this reason ASL recommends glazing tape to one side of the glazing, a double-wedge installation or a backing seal where applicable.

GLAZING POCKET TOLERANCES ASL’s partition systems are designed to incorporate removeable beads and sufficiently deep pockets to achieve the minimum required tolerances for both edge cover and edge clearance. In some cases, having a removeable bead on two adjacent sides is not possible which will mean shuffle glazing is required to install the glass. When shuffle glazing edge cover and edge clearance are harder to achieve, this must be considered when designing your opening and selecting your glass.

As illustrated in the below table taken from NZS 4223.1:2008 the minimum dimensions for edge cover and edge clearance increase with the thickness of the glass.

To shuffle glaze an opening the glass size cannot be more than the sight size of the opening plus the depth of one rebate and minus 2-4mm tolerance (allowing for squareness, thickness & glass type). This is because the glass must be moved all the way into one pocket and clear the edge of the other side of the frame to shuffle glaze.

Thus, when shuffle glazing, the depth of the rebate will affect the maximum thickness of glass that can be used as the maximum glass size, as outlined above, will limit the amount of edge cover possible.

POWDER COATING

POWDER COATING OF ALUMINIUM EXTRUSIONS Powder coating is a form of surface finishing that uses electrostatic charge to attract powder particles to a conductive metal part. The particles are sprayed from a gun tip which imparts a charge on the powder so that they are attracted to the grounded metal part until they are melted and fused to the material in a curing oven. The powder composition varies in colour and quality based on the desired finish with some powders containing additives to increase gloss or hardness of the finished coating. A standard coating will be between 50-100 microns.

FINISHING OPTIONS

POWDER COATING

During the powder coating process the lengths of material must be held by a jig while they travel through the spray booth and the oven. This must be considered when the product is loaded for powder coating as the jigs will leave marks that will be visible after coating. For this reason, when a product will be visible from all sides it must be drilled and supported from each end rather than supported by jigs in the middle of the extrusion.

As the powder coated finish is opaque, many small blemishes and scratches can be masked by a powder

When viewing powder coated aluminium for the purpose of identifying defects, the following points should be noted. Powder coated surfaces should be viewed from a minimum of 2m and from a straight-on viewing angle.

Based on WANZ standards there are a certain amount of defects deemed acceptable on a powder coated surface.

A significant defect is a defect that is visible from 2 m and has an outside diameter more than 1.5 mm. From 2 m, the coating on the primary visible internal and external surfaces shall be of uniform appearance, colour and texture and be free from significant defects. However, the coating may contain one minor defect as defined in section 3 of the WANZ standard for every 1 m of extruded length. A minor defect may be visible from 2 m and has an outside diameter of up to and including 1.5 mm.

POWDER COATED PRODUCTS: Powder coating is one of the most durable colour coatings available and, with very little effort on your part, it will provide you with many years of excellent service. To extend the life of powder coated articles and to comply with any applicable warranty requirements for powder coated aluminium joinery, a simple, regular maintenance program should be implemented.

• DO use isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits and rinse with warm soapy water.

The effects of ultraviolet light, atmospheric pollution, dirt, grime and airborne salt deposits can all accumulate over time and should be removed at regular intervals.

As a general rule cleaning should take place every three months. In areas where pollutants are more prevalent, such as beachfront houses and industrial or geothermal areas, then a cleaning program should be carried out on a more frequent basis i.e., every one to two months.

• ONLY use approved tapes only to mask joinery.

The golden rules for protecting your powder coated aluminium: • Mask your joinery when building, renovating, plastering, or painting.

• If paint splatters or sealants do get on joinery, do not allow to dry, remove immediately.

coated finish unlike with anodising. However, large scratches and dents will still be noticeable in the finished coating so the quality of the aluminium being coated must be carefully monitored.

• DO NOT use turpentine, white spirits, thinners, citrus based cleaners or other aggressive solvents on powder coating (these may be harmful to the extended life of the powder coated surface and should be avoided as the damage may not be visible immediately and may take up to twelve months to appear) affect painted finishes. ©2024/25 - Images are copyright & property of Aluminate Solutions Ltd

• DO clean only when powder coated surface temperature is below 25 C°.

• DO NOT rub powder coating excessively, especially metallic and gloss finishes.

Restoring weathered or scratched surfaces: If through some misadventure your powder coated aluminium joinery is scratched or damaged, don’t panic Dulux Powder & Industrial Coatings spray cans can be used to make aesthetic repairs to scuffed or scratched powder coated surfaces. Weathered areas or mild scratches can also be restored with the use of Dulux Gloss Up which is a light to medium cutting cream ideally suited for gloss restoration and has been specifically designed for this purpose.

Onsite handling: Ensure that the aluminium is properly protected with interleaved wrapping in paper or plastic and ensure that the wrapping does not get damp during storage. Ensure that the powder coated material, especially darker colours, is kept out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time as this can cause plastic wrapping to leave residue on the powder coated finish. ASL recommends leaving all product stored on site in it’s original packaging wherever possible until installation commences.

ANODISING

FINISHING Options

ANODISING OF ALUMINIUM EXTRUSIONS Anodising is an electrolytic process that produces a thick protective oxide coating on aluminium and it’s alloys. The oxide layer is typically between 12-25 microns in thickness and improves resistance to wear, corrosion and can also be used to colour the aluminium.

The anodising process creates a transparent coating on the aluminium meaning that any surface blemishes can be visible in the finished product. For this reason, ASL and its suppliers carefully check all pieces for defects prior to anodising, ensuring the best quality finished products.

During the anodising process the lengths of extrusion are clamped at the ends in order to secure them and pass a current through the material. This results in wastage of up

to 50mm at each end of the piece and must be considered when choosing this type of finishing. These marks are more apparent on coloured anodising, but will appear on natural anodised pieces as well.

Inspection of anodised aluminium should always be done from a distance of at least 2m and in daylight, but not direct sunlight. Due to the nature of extruded aluminium, it is sometimes possible to observe variations of brightness, banding or lines when viewed from too close or from certain angles. These do not affect the performance of the aluminium product and should not be a basis for rejecting the product unless they are easily noticeable from over 2m away.

ANODISED PRODUCTS:

The golden rules for protecting your anodised aluminium: • Mask your joinery when building, renovating, plastering or painting.

• If paint splatters or sealants do get on joinery, do not allow to dry, remove immediately.

• DO NOT use wire brushes, steel wool or emery paper to clean products.

• When cleaning wash down the surface with a neutral detergent and then rinse thoroughly.

• DO remove any deposits on the aluminium surface with a nylon abrasive cleaning pad or brush and detergent, then rinse with water.

Restoring marked or scratched surfaces: To repair any small scratches or scuffs to an anodised aluminium surface it is recommended to use a plastic abrasive sanding block which can be used to blend the surface and remove the defect. These are effective and removing superficial marks to the surface of the aluminium, but any deeper scratches cannot be removed and will require a replacement piece of aluminium.

Onsite handling: Ensure that the aluminium is properly protected with interleaved wrapping in paper or plastic and ensure that the wrapping does not get damp during storage. To ensure that the anodised coating is not attacked by corrosive chemicals, a temporary protective coating can be applied in the form of a suitable non-yellowing lacquer, e.g. methyl methacrylate or cellulose acetate butyrate, or a strippable coating or tape (polyethylene) is recommended. Tape and strippable coatings should be easily removable and should not leave residues.

ANODISING

A regular cleaning and maintenance regime is essential for two very good reasons; to maintain a decorative appearance and to reduce any chemical attack, if applicable. Anodised surfaces are cleaned to remove dirt, grime, grit, atmospheric pollutants, and iridescence.

Initial cleaning should occur after installation, to remove atmospheric dust, smut, deposits of dirt, possible cement deposits, glues, etc. from the anodised surface. Periodic cleaning should then be done on a regular basis. The intervals of each cleaning cycle are dependent on the atmospheric pollutants, area, region, corrosive level, etc. for a particular region. i.e. coastal areas.

FINISHING OPTIONS

The life of an anodised finish can be greatly enhanced by the adoption of a regular documented maintenance programme. Any chemical attack on decorative surfaces which is not regularly cleaned becomes increasingly severe and after several years, may be impossible to restore.

This door assembly guide is of a general nature and designed to assist suitably experienced tradespeople to assemble ASL Doors to a high standard. For installation support, contact your ASL representative before you start.

ASL recommends that all persons engaged in the assembly have full knowledge of the product and installation procedure as set out in the most recent edition of the manufacturer’s instructions and related documents. Manufacturer’s documents relating to work in this section are:

ASSEMBLY GUIDE

INSPECTION Before starting assembly of ASL Doors, check again that the materials have been supplied as ordered and are free from damage or faults. Check colour and delivery docket to ensure product has been supplied correctly. Any variations must be reported to ASL prior to commencing the installation. No claims will be accepted where the job continues with obvious faults and no consultation with ASL has taken place.

TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE & HANDLING ASL profiles must be transported, stored, and handled with care. Avoid impacts or distortion and protect edges from being crushed. Do not accept damaged goods. If product arrives damaged note the condition on the freight documents and contact ASL immediately. Goods signed as receipted in ‘good condition’ will not be the responsibility of ASL. Always transport and store aluminium profiles on a flat, clean, dry surface.

CALCULATING DOOR AND CUT SIZES Measure door opening size (height and width). Make allowance for door sizing to ‘fit’ inside the opening (recommended opening height minus 15mm, opening width minus 8mm). Ensure all blades are sharp and straight. Ensure all cuts are at 90 degrees to ensure square doors. The cut lengths for each extrusion are calculated as below by working backwards from the opening size: Door Height = opening height minus 15mm Door Width = opening width minus 8mm Rail/Transom/Bead Cut Size = Door Width minus both stile widths (e.g. -100mm hinge stile, -100mm lockset stile = -200mm total), plus 2mm Stile/Slipper Cut Size = Door Height – as calculated above

1) Cut a small off-cut of top/bottom rail to use as a template.

2) Starting from the inside of the stile use the template to mark the required hole locations, then drill through the entire stile using a long series 6.5mm drill bit.

3) From the outside of the stile, enlarge the 6.5mm holes using a 10mm drill bit, this allows the bolt head to pass through the outside of the stile. DO NOT enlarge the holes on the glazing pocket side of the stile.

4) Place the fabrication block in the glazing channel in line with the drilled holes.

5) Repeat steps 2, 3 & 4 at the top and bottom of each stile.

6) On a clear bench or surface place one stile and both rails square to each other, ensuring the bead side is facing upwards and towards the center of the stile.

7) Insert the bolts through the outside of the stile, in through the fabrication block and into the rail screw ports. You will require a long ‘Hex 5’ driver bit to reach through the stile holes to tighten the bolts. (Ideally prior to fitting of the bolts, tap out the rail screw port holes by driving a bolt in and out of each screw port). Repeat for each rail.

8) Transoms should then be installed using the same install method. Ensuring the bead is facing upwards and the transom is at the correct height, in accordance with the door orientation. All beads should be on the same side of the door.

9) Repeat the above steps to attach the second stile to the exposed rail/transom ends.

10) Install screw caps where applicable. Note, not required for lockset stiles.

11) Slide in the slipper plate and secure it top and bottom using a small countersunk screw.

12) Clean any swarf from surfaces immediately after assembly has concluded.

ON COMPLETION Clean surfaces of all aluminium swarf. Remove any debris, unused materials, and waste from site. Ensure door panels are stored in a safe area if not immediately hung after assembly.
