Beginning his legal career in 1967, Dunn has spent almost 60 years serving clients and communities throughout Texas and Arkansas. Over the course of his remarkable career, he has witnessed sweeping changes in the legal profession, the judicial system and society itself. Through it all, his commitment to the practice of law—and to the people he represents—has remained constant. “I just wanted to help people,” Dunn says of what inspired him to pursue law. That desire to serve has guided his career from the beginning.

For nearly six decades, Winford Dunn has practiced law with a simple philosophy: help people, treat them fairly and always do what is right. 010

Looking back, one of the most rewarding aspects of Dunn’s career has been discovering just how much a lawyer can accomplish on behalf of others. He has had the opportunity to represent people from all walks of life and to participate in a judicial system that has itself evolved over the decades. He has witnessed— and in some cases been part of— changes involving women’s rights, racial equality, civil rights and other important issues that helped shape the communities of today. For Dunn, being a lawyer has never simply meant practicing inside a courtroom. It has meant being part of a system capable of creating meaningful change. His career has included general practices, including civil matters involving monetary damages as well as criminal cases. Over the years, that broad experience has allowed him to understand the law from many different perspectives. One of the greatest lessons Dunn has learned throughout his career is the importance of the judicial system as a place where every person should have an equal opportunity to seek justice. Regardless of someone’s wealth, position or prominence, Dunn believes the courthouse should provide a level playing field. Through the judicial system and with the assistance of an attorney, individuals have the same rights and opportunities to present their cases. He has seen that principle demonstrated throughout his career while representing people from many different backgrounds. He credits attorneys, judges and juries with helping ensure that the judicial process works toward finding the truth and reaching the proper outcome. That belief is particularly meaningful in Texarkana, a community unlike many others in the country. Texarkana’s location on the Texas-Arkansas state line gives local attorneys a unique professional perspective. Lawyers in the area may work within both state systems as well as federal courts, gaining exposure to different laws, procedures and legal environments. For Dunn, that has been one of the advantages of practicing in the area. It grants access to both state and federal courts and has provided opportunities to learn, grow and work alongside legal professionals on both sides of the state line. He is proud of the legal community that has developed in Texarkana and believes the area’s attorneys compare favorably with lawyers anywhere in the country. Becoming an exceptional attorney starts with wanting to help people. “You have to WANT to help,” he says. That desire must be accompanied by honesty, hard work, confidence and respect. An attorney must be honest with not only the clients, but the judges, opposing counsel and the court. Respect for everyone involved in the legal process, he believes, is essential to becoming the best lawyer possible. Confidence is also something that must be earned. “You have to work on it to be confident,” Dunn explains. The legal profession requires preparation, knowledge and persistence. There are victories, but there are also defeats, and attorneys must learn how to get back up and continue moving forward. His advice to attorneys just beginning their careers is remarkably similar to the advice he would give someone who has been practicing for decades: be honest, work hard and remain professional. He emphasizes that success in law does not come without effort. Attorneys must put in the time, learn the profession and continually improve their skills. Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of Dunn’s career has been the opportunity to witness major changes in American society from the perspective of the legal profession. He remembers a time when women faced restrictions that prevented them from owning property in the same way they can today. He witnessed the continuing evolution of civil rights following landmark events such as the Little Rock crisis and the passage of major civil rights legislation. He believes attorneys have an important responsibility to participate in the changes taking place around them and to ensure that the rights of individuals are protected. One particularly significant professional experience involved the tobacco litigation. Dunn describes the responsibility associated with those cases and the health issues involved as a tremendous challenge—and an honor. He was proud that Texarkana was selected to be involved in such significant litigation and believes the community’s federal court system demonstrated its ability to handle important and complex cases. For Dunn, practicing law and serving the community have always gone hand in hand. He believes attorneys have a responsibility to be involved in the communities where they live and work. Community involvement, he says, helps uplift the importance of the community and demonstrates a willingness to contribute to its future. His advice to residents is just as direct: be involved and stay involved. Learn about the community. Pay attention to what is happening. Support positive progress rather than holding the community back. Take pride in Texarkana and help support efforts that will strengthen the area for future generations. He also believes supporting local government officials and initiatives that help the community grow—including efforts involving education and the university—is important to Texarkana’s future. Being recognized as a distinguished lawyer is an honor Dunn does not take lightly. “I am very honored.” he says. A LT M a g a z i ne | S e pt e m b e r 2 0 2 6

At the same time, he is quick to recognize the accomplishments of his colleagues. He believes there are many other lawyers who are equally deserving of recognition and takes great pride in the strength of the local legal community. He believes the distinction is ultimately about recognizing a career built on doing the right thing. After nearly 60 years in the legal profession, Dunn’s focus remains on the future. He hopes his influence will continue through the next generation of lawyers by encouraging them to maintain the values that have guided him throughout his career—particularly honesty, hard work, professionalism and a genuine desire to help others. He admires those same qualities in young attorneys today. Experience may change, technology may change and the practice of law may continue to evolve, but he believes the fundamentals remain the same. When Dunn considers the legacy he hopes to leave behind, it is not simply about the number of cases he handled or the years he spent in court. It is about the people he helped and the community he served. He hopes to continue building upon his reputation throughout Texas and Arkansas while remaining an active part of the community he calls home. “The legal profession is the best opportunity I have ever had.” It has been an opportunity to help his clients, serve his hometown, contribute to his community and build a successful life alongside his family. It has also given him a front-row seat to some of the most significant changes in the legal and social history of the region. His story is ultimately one of perseverance, service and commitment—a reminder that a successful legal career is about more than practicing law. It is about using that profession as an opportunity to make a difference. And for Winford Dunn, after almost 60 years, that opportunity continues to be an honor.

JASON HORTON’S COMMITMENT TO JUSTICE, TRUTH AND GROWTH For Jason Horton, practicing law is about much more than navigating the courtroom. It is about seeking the truth, protecting the rights of clients and working toward a just and equitable outcome in every case. With a practice focused on criminal law, Jason represents individuals and corporations in Texas and Arkansas, handling cases in state and federal courts. Through years of experience, Jason has learned that every case has its own circumstances, and that the truth is not always immediately apparent. “I enjoy reaching a just and equitable resolution in each case based on a totality of the circumstances,” he explains. Criminal charges often begin with accusations from one party, with law enforcement and prosecutors relying on the information they receive. While Jason would hope that accusations made to law enforcement are truthful, there are situations in which important information is withheld or statements are simply untrue. In those moments, he considers it a privilege to help bring the truth to light and prevent a wrongful conviction. When choosing an attorney, honesty is at the top of Jason’s list. Clients should look for an attorney who will give them straightforward advice and never promise a specific result. He also cautions people to be careful about attorneys who aggressively solicit their business through unsolicited mail, email or social media. Communication is equally important. Having previously served for years as Panel Chair for the State Bar of Texas District 1 Grievance Committee, Jason saw firsthand how important communication is to the attorney-client relationship. “The number one complaint against attorneys involved a lack of communication,” he recalls. “Communication between an attorney and his or her client forms the bedrock of the attorney/client relationship.” While admitting that no one is perfect, Jason believes clients deserve to know what is happening with their case—even when the news isn’t what they hoped to hear. In his experience, clients would rather hear bad news quickly than not hear from their attorney at all. A criminal charge can be overwhelming, particularly for someone who has never experienced the legal system. Many of Jason Horton Law’s clients have no experience in the criminal justice system and are facing circumstances that are unfamiliar and frightening. Jason believes a large part of the attorney’s role is to help these clients understand that their current situation does not necessarily define their future. “Many of our clients are business owners, professionals, or students who have made mistakes that are fixable if they are willing to put in the work,” he says. “They have never been through a situation like they currently face, and, if the process works, they will never find themselves in such a situation again.” Throughout his career, several cases have left a lasting impact. Shortly after graduating from law school, he found himself fighting to help his own family keep his childhood home after the current tenants filed bankruptcy and attempted to claim homestead rights to the property. Armed with little more than his law school bankruptcy textbook and sheer determination, Jason used vacation time to litigate the case through federal bankruptcy court in downtown Houston.

Ultimately, the federal judge ruled in his family’s favor, and the home was returned. Years later, after opening his own firm in 2010, another defining moment came in January 2011 when he took a federal criminal case to jury trial in the Eastern District of Texas. In what he believes was one of Judge David Folsom’s final trials, he secured an eight-count acquittal for his client, and his client walked out of the courtroom a free man. “I just sat there, a bit stunned, knowing that case would probably catapult my practice to where I always hoped it would be,” Horton says. Since then, thousands of cases have followed. Yet, when asked about his greatest professional accomplishment, his answer isn’t centered on a single courtroom victory. He considers building a law practice that provides a good life for his family while creating a great work environment for the people around him to be his greatest accomplishment. That commitment to relationships is evident in his longtime partnership with legal assistant Teresa Hopper, with whom he has worked for nearly 20 years. “Working relationships like that are few and far between,” he says, adding that he hopes to continue growing the firm while fostering that same sense of loyalty among new members of the team. When asked what wisdom he would share with readers, his advice is simple: do not over complicate life. He points to The Four Agreements as a philosophy worth following: be impeccable with your word, do not take things personally, do not make assumptions and always do your best. His legal journey can be summarize with one sentence. “Man begins immature, irrational, and finds it difficult to adapt to constant conflict; man ends as Yoda.” Behind it all is a genuine belief in growth, perspective and continual learning. His greatest motivation to continue learning and growing comes from his family—his wife, Amanda, and their children, Charlie Jack and Avalene. He describes his wife as his biggest fan and someone who has always been uncompromisingly truthful about how his work and certain cases have affected him over the years. “She constantly inspires me to think outside the box,” he says. He also draws inspiration from the strength and dedication Amanda demonstrates in every aspect of her life—as a mother, wife, daughter, sister, chef, designer, contractor and an overall good human. Those qualities have naturally influenced their children as well. He sees their bravery, honesty, work ethic and willingness to help others as reflections of the values they have learned at home. Ultimately, his philosophy is rooted in the belief that true growth comes not from comparing ourselves with others, but from becoming better versions of ourselves. He recalls a simple idea that has stayed with him: There is nothing noble about being better than your fellow man; true nobility comes from being better than your former self. For an attorney whose career has been built around truth, perseverance and service, that philosophy seems fitting. After all, the practice of law is not only about understanding the past or navigating the present—it is also about learning, growing and helping people move forward.

Maddie and Matt’s story began at Texas High School, but it was not until they both were at the University of Arkansas that friendship turned into something more. What began as two hometown friends soon grew into a relationship that carried them through college, law school and the beginning of their careers. After graduating from Arkansas, Matt attended Baylor Law while Maddie attended SMU Dedman School of Law. Through demanding classes, long distance drives, bar exams, and the excitement of new careers, they continued to choose each other every step of the way. Both achieved their dreams of becoming attorneys and began building their lives together in Dallas. In the spring of 2025, Matt proposed at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, beginning a new chapter in a story that had already grown through so many seasons of life. On June 13, 2026, surrounded by their family and closest friends, Matt and Maddie were married—celebrating not only the beginning of their marriage, but a love that grew from friendship, matured alongside their dreams and ultimately brought them home to one another as one.

What made our wedding day special—What made Maddie and Matt’s wedding day so special was the overwhelming amount of love that surrounded them from beginning to end. Maddie and Matt used a cake topper from a very close family friend ( Maddie’s second Mom, Monique Cook) that her and her husband had used on their cake. Maddie also had a brooch on her bouquet that her Grandmother, Patsy Griffin, had at her wedding and her Mother, Jackie Gerrald, used on her bouquet at her wedding. Maddie and Matt also had Monique as their officiant and that made the day so unique, heartfelt and personal. BRITT & MORGAN Britt and Morgan were pretty much set up on a “blind date” by mutual friends. The friends at the time, thought they would be a good match, make each other laugh, and have fun, no pressure. So, one night in January of 2024, they met and quickly decided they enjoyed each others company and were inseparable since night one. Throughout the years of dating, they became best friends, laughed more than they ever knew possible, and knew they wanted to spend forever together. Designing Jewelry! Have you ever wished you could design your own custom ring like celebrities do? Cooper Fine Jewelers, formerly Parks Diamond Jewelers in Texarkana recently celebrated their 80th anniversary and the current owner, Diane Mulvany Cooper, announced she would be giving a gift certificate to create your own piece of jewelry to the winner of the best story for their connection to the store. My story was selected as the best. The jewelry store became the center of my attention when I was researching the purchase of a ring while writing my book, “AGAINST ALL ODDS We Found The Perfect Love.” When I was 15, and dating my husband, he had purchased an engagement ring for me with the intention to propose. He decided I was too young and planned to wait till I was older to give it to me. In the meantime, he unexpectedly moved back to his home near Hot Springs and wrote me a letter with this story, but it was returned. For fifteen years I never knew about it. Communication was nil in the fifties. No cell phones or internet and no Google. In1973, we reconnected and he showed me the letter. After reading about it, I wasn’t that curious about the ring until after his mother and he passed away and I began writing my love story. I had two of my mother-in-law’s rings and knew in my gut that one of them was very special. The notes in her diary revealed that she had sent a money order in September 1958 to an address that was the Texarkana National Bank building.

I called and made an appointment with Bill Mulvany, the jewelry store owner. Parks Diamond Jewelers wasreimagined in 2015. As a result, Cooper Fine Jewelers was born, serving as a tribute to Mr. Mulvany’s great-grandson, Cooper. It has always meant a lot to Cooper that the store was named after him. Mr. Mulvany had years of knowledge of jewelry and took a lot of time giving me the history of my two rings. One ring was purchased in the late 50s and the other one, with very tiny stones,wassoldtoMarinesinthePXinthe30sbecausetheydid not make a lot of money, and I knew my father-in-law had been in the Marines when they married. The ring was a Love Bright line, and Parks sold it in the fifties. With that information, my mystery was solved. I knew the ring set she had worn all those years was the one intended for me, and the one in her jewelry box was the original one bought in the 30s when they married and was sentimental. Creating my own ring has been an exciting and easy process. I took a picture of what I liked, and we created a beautiful ring using stones from two rings I had bought over the years. You can use your own stones or buy them to create your special jewelry design. Tiffany, Cooper’s manager, helped walk me through the process of getting a CAD (a computer-aided design) and the jewelry design technician made changes to the specifications we wanted before casting the ring for the stones to be set. If you have old rings you don’t wear, turn them into a new design that you will love to display on your finger instead of gathering dust in your jewelry box. It will be a piece of jewelry you can pass down to your next generation! Tiffany and Diane will give you great advice and help walk with you all the way!
