It’s football season!
It’s that time again – time to gear up for football! Being in the South, we all love to enjoy Friday nights watching our kids participate in football games. Whether they are catching the ball on the field, marching in the band, cheering the team on, or dancing their hearts out, the joy is apparent in the faces all around. We all know that school is back in session when the stadium lights start coming on regularly – and we show up! Throughout my children’s school years, I loved attending all their functions. Football was one that was particularly fun. We had reserved seats every year so that we didn’t miss a single game. And sometimes those went on for what seemed forever! I can remember one year when I believe the last game was the weekend before Christmas – or at least it seemed that way. It was so much fun to cheer on our team. Nowadays, we are more interested in professional football – and the Cowboys are a big part of our lives. Still, we know when football starts, school starts, and for so many families, that is an emotional roller coaster. My children both always enjoyed going to school. There was no skipping or trying to get out of school by acting sick. They were not always perfect, but they were perfect to me. I am not sure how parents now make it through the beginning of school. I applaud you for everything you do. This year I volunteered to purchase school supplies for a foster child in need. It was my pleasure to help. However, I was shocked at everything they were required to purchase. I wondered how some families, with more than one child, could possibly afford the things on the list! Somehow I know they make it, but they have to struggle. Getting back into a routine makes life easier. The slower pace of the summer makes way for fall and the routine of school, seeing friends regularly again, and learning new things. Enjoy all the “new” things. They will only happen once in a lifetime. The day you are living will be gone before you know it. Don’t waste it. May God bless you and yours…

Seniors 2018 Senior year… For moms, emotions can run rampant. Do you remember how it felt to wish time away? You did at one point. You wished for the day when you wouldn’t have diapers to change or didn’t have to cut food up into a million small pieces. You wished for the day you could go on vacation without having to worry about how you or your child would sleep. As much as the thought of your child driving terrified you, you wished she/he could drive to wherever they needed to go. You wished for a Friday night where you and your husband could spontaneously go to dinner. And now, with graduation flying at you at warp speed, you wish desperately that time would slow down…or better yet, stop altogether. If your child is this close to graduation, here’s how your year is likely to go: Fall – Senior year and all the “lasts” began. Last first day of school, last football game, last Homecoming dance, last fall musical or concert, last Wednesday in the middle of October he or she will be home. Enjoy posting all of those “lasts” on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You remember those when they show up in years to come. Holidays – Don’t even think about it. Early January – With the arrival of the graduation year that once seemed ridiculously and impossibly far into the future, things got real. You begin looking up graduation party ideas on Pinterest and become so completely overwhelmed by all of the amazing ideas that you put it out of your mind and decide to worry about it later. March – If you have younger kids, March quite possibly meant the last spring break trip you took as a family due to conflicting schedules in the coming years. April - The month the panic sets in as the date of graduation looms nearer. Things on your to-do list? • Spend countless hours and as many tears locating old childhood photos for the collages you’ve always planned to have at the grad party or the sentimental album you’ve imagined gifting on graduation. • Begin to think about things like dorm room shopping, college finances, and how big of a can of mace is acceptable to hang on a key chain more realistically than ever before. • Start to spruce up your house for the grad party. Lasts - Prom, end-of-year banquets, the last finals, and the straw that might threaten to break your back, the last last day of. No matter what happens, you can’t stop time with your high school senior, but more importantly, you certainly can’t get any of these moments back once they’ve passed. So although your heart may be aching, don’t forget to enjoy all of these wonderful and exciting last moments! You will remember them for a long time! And for you seniors, remember that mom (and dad) have emotions, too. Try to be kind and generous with your time. You will remember that, as well, for your lifetime.

Education The lazy days of summer have ended, and it’s time to go back to school. Though there can be some reluctance for both teachers and students, there is also excitement and anticipation for what a new school year can hold. Across the world, teachers of all levels will begin trying to inspire, support and encourage students on their way to success. Students, though maybe nervous about the class at first, will gain confidence and knowledge in subjects that will help them pursue their dreams. William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire,” and the professors in our community want to help light the way for their students as they make steps towards their future.

According to Jeremy, good principals and teachers are people with high expectations for the students and are very knowledgeable in the subject they teach. “A good teacher is ‘fair, firm, and friendly’ to the students. Also, they hold the students accountable for their actions,” Jeremy says. “If I were in charge of hiring a teacher, I would hire Ms. Hobson. Ms. Hobson is my English teacher. She is very knowledgeable, she expects her students to learn. I credit Ms. Hobson for teaching me how to write and to express myself.” While good principals and teachers help students, Jeremy believes that good students rise to the occasion and take responsibility for their actions. “A good student is one that shows respect to other students, teachers, administrators and to their parents,” Jeremy says. “They are willing to attend school with a

Jeremy is the son of Angela and Jason Creek. When he finishes in Red Lick ISD, he plans to pursue his interest in professional theater by attending either Pleasant Grove High School or Texas High School because both schools have excellent theater programs. In fact, the only thing he would change about Red Lick schools is to expand the amount of theatre programs for interested students, “It was great to be able to participate in the U.I.L One Act 036 ALT Magazine | September 2017
play, and I was excited to receive the Outstanding Actor Award; but, I would like more opportunities to perform at school, which would supplement the plays I do at Silver Moon and other venues,” Jeremy says. “Attending a school like Red Lick offers me a chance to participate in a number of activities such as athletics, band, theater. I have not had to choose one or the other. I could participate in all.”
positive attitude and a willingness to learn.” If school were a movie, Jeremy says that the movie depicting Red Lick would be Facing Giants. “This movie is about faith and perseverance. We are small at Red Lick; however, we meet the challenges that come our way,” Jeremy says. While peer pressure is one of the biggest problems facing our students, Jeremy says that he has not been exposed to it at Red Lick. “If I were faced with peer pressure, I am the type of person that would just walk away,” Jeremy says. “It does not bother me to walk away.” To Jeremy, being at Red Lick has been a very positive experience where both teachers and students are focused on learning and helping each other. “I am not sure everyone realizes how positive the students and the staff are at Red Lick,” Jeremy says. “If you, as a student, want to succeed, the staff will work with you.”

Associate Professor of Physics and Adjunct Professor of Oboe Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas Shannon did not consider a job teaching until she met her former department chair, Charlie Leming, at a science fair. She had no idea how rewarding it could be to see students enter the program, learn and grow, mature as human beings and become successful adults. “I think we all feel a sense of pride in watching our students succeed,” Shannon says. “We are directly affecting change in their lives by giving students knowledge and skills that open up possibilities they would not have imagined previously. In my position as a professor, I am constantly involved in new projects and learning new information to stay up-to-date in the field. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling place to be than some place where I can directly impact lives, share the remarkable nature of science, and learn new things all the time.”

I hope to have area engineers and scientists visit our classes so that students can learn from their experiences,” Shannon says. “Our department is also developing relationships with area businesses to develop projects and internships. Students can then gain experience working on problems that real companies face in engineering design and problem solving. This benefits companies in that they gain ideas on how to solve their problems while our students benefit from real-world experience in their field of interest.” To Shannon, the single most important characteristic to achieving a goal is determination. “Students who are determined will continue to try even when the material is difficult, and they are frustrated,” Shannon says. “I teach students concepts of physics, but I also teach them problem solving. That means they learn how to identify the
different aspects of the problem, realize the information that they have at hand and the information they need to continue, analyze the different paths they could take to attempt solving the problem, and determine if their solution is reasonable. We apply this to physics problems, but this process applies to life. Individuals who can see a way forward through problem solving don't simply stop when they are frustrated with their situation. They see the paths forward through their dilemmas and take action. I like to think that I help students develop grit.” There are many times when teachers and professors are not aware of the difficulties students face on a daily basis. Because of this, Shannon encourages all of her students to communicate with their professors. “I am certain that all Henderson State professors wants to see their students succeed,” Shannon says. “When we know the struggles our students undergo, we can often share another perspective on how to accomplish great things despite the circumstances.” Shannon had a student who fell asleep in class quite frequently and had difficulty completing her assignments. However, in conversations, Shannon noticed that she was very bright and seemed conscientious. Rather than assuming she simply did not care, Shannon called the student into her office to ask what was going on and express concern for her grades. “It turned out that she had family stress and a major medical issue,” Shannon says. “We developed a plan for her to get caught up on her late assignments and met weekly to reassess how she was doing in school. It was important to me that she knew that I believed in her through that difficult time and would serve as her advocate.”

For Shannon, success is seeing her students graduate. Every year, she feels as though her own children are graduating and taking that first big step out into the “real world.” She always wonders if she will ever see such a talented, dedicated and wonderful class of human beings again. “Then, the new semester starts and we have so much talent, persistence, kindness, and intelligence,” Shannon says. “Each student that we help through the program and who earns their degree is a success. Students from rural Arkansas who have never left their hometown before traveling with our department and who had no idea they would go to graduate school are successful in their careers. Assistant Professor of Sociology Texas A&M Texarkana Kim was a first generation college student who graduated high school right down the road in Maud, Texas. Though she felt intimidated to go to college, she found a peer group and mentors who pushed her to success. Because of this, her goals are to earn tenure at TAMUT, continue teaching and researching, and mentor students who doubt themselves. She wants to help foster their growth and confidence in the classroom and help them find careers after college. “I believe in the idea of the self-fulfilling prophecy. If I believe the student will succeed and set high expectations for them in the classroom, while also encouraging them to believe in themselves, then they perform well,” Kim says. “Half of the battle for the student is believing he or she can achieve. Once they find confidence, everything tends to fall into place. That is why I give them a lot of responsibility in the classroom.” After graduating as Valedictorian from Maud High School, Kim received an Honors College Fellowship and earned a BA in Sociology and Criminal Justice with a minor in English at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she also received the Harold D. Hantz Four-Year Scholar's Award for the most outstanding four-year honors graduate in Fulbright College. She loved the sociology program in Fayetteville so much that she stayed to earn her MA in Sociology. She then received a Graduate College Foundation Fellowship at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and earned her PhD. She’s been a tenure-track assistant professor at TAMUT since August of 2015. When she isn’t teaching, she is spending time with her new baby, Maya Claire, and her husband, Parker, who is a middle school teacher. “It is a joy to see the two of them together, especially when he reads to her,” Kim says. “I also love watching and playing softball, painting, singing, and spending time with my family, friends and fur-babies. My weird hobby is designing a home I want to build in the future that is completely self-sufficient, with 040 ALT Magazine | September 2017
solar power, rainwater catching system, and an aquaponics gardening system.” Kim believes the greatest challenge facing students today is time and money. Rising tuition costs across the country make higher education a huge financial commitment. “I appreciate TAMUT for keeping costs down as much as possible. Many students cannot afford to go to school unless they have a job, which also means that their time is limited,” Kim says. “Others may also have family obligations, which is why I love how TAMUT offers many family-friendly activities throughout the year for our students and their loved ones to enjoy.” Kim teaches sociology, which is the study of groups and society. This means that they discuss many hot-topics such as race, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexuality. Kim has found that many students want to disengage immediately with these topics for fear of upsetting others or having their own beliefs challenged. “My greatest accomplishment is seeing students engage in thoughtful reflection on these topics and when they take what they have learned and use it to help others,” Kim says. “As the sociology club faculty adviser, I see my students take what they’ve learned in the classroom and go out into the community to help those in need. For example, the club has decided to choose a cause (i.e. helping those with mental illness, living in poverty, etc.) each year and sell hats to raise funds to donate to local charities and nonprofits in the area.” One of the personal strengths Kim believes she has in the classroom is the ability to give the students a lot of autonomy in class. She has seen that they respond best when they “learn by doing” in the classroom, which is what they call “experiential learning” at TAM-
UT. “If I expect them to take more responsibility by leading or participating in discussions, activities, and presentations, they rise to the occasion,” Kim says. When students struggle with the responsibility of the classroom, Kim has learned how to address the concern and help the student use their strengths in the class. “I had a student constantly challenge the course materials and other students in the class to the point where it became a problem. I had a hard time facilitating open discussion because other students would avoid talking so as not to provoke this person,” Kim says. “I sat down with the student and pointed out their strengths in debate. I told them the best way to debate with fellow students is to understand both their argument as well as counterarguments. To strengthen their own opinions and beliefs, they had to listen and consider counterarguments as well. Class discussion became much easier after that, and the student told me how much they loved the class at the end of the semester.” Since Kim is from the area, she has an understanding of the resources and organizations in Texarkana. This has helped her facilitate activities with organizations such as the Randy Sams Outreach Center. She has also invited local experts to come present to her class, and she encourages her students to become members of the Greater Texarkana Young Professionals organization. “I also have a lot of family and friends here in the community that work in a variety of professional fields, from those working in the criminal justice system, to school teachers, to nurses, so I do my best to make connections between students and community members that will enhance their learning and help them transition into their careers after graduation,” Kim says.”
Brandon Washington
Dean of Workforce and Community & Business Education Texarkana College Brandon graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Kinesiology from University of Arkansas. He also has a Master of Education in Administration. His educational philosophy stems from his experience as a coach and as an administrator, two fields that he believes are very closely related. “Instruction needs to be student-centered and lead students to higher level thinking and problem solving,” Brandon says. “The best practice instructional strategies are effective with students of all ages and backgrounds. I’ve seen effective strategies that impact students at local elementary campuses work well with our adult learners at Texarkana College.” One of the greatest challenges that he sees students facing today is engagement in the classroom. It’s hard for teachers to compete with the devices and gaming systems that students utilize outside of school for entertainment. However, Brandon believes that instead of trying to compete with technology, teachers should be on the lookout for students whose talents and skills would make them prime candidates for up and coming professions. “More students than we realize are better fit for skills and trades to enter the workforce as they are challenged to use their imagination and the technology experience they already have,” Brandon says. “We need to encourage them to follow their dreams to pursue working in a field they are passionate about. Jobs are and will continue following the innovations in technology related to automation and robots, and the best people for these careers are ones with the ability to use these skills in technology to create and maneuver these machines.” In the classroom, Brandon believes that the way to help troubled students is to open the lines of communication and build relationships. In his experience, there is often an underlying issue or need that isn’t being met in the classroom or at home that hinders the student. In fact, he counts his biggest success in education as the time he was able to help encourage a student athlete. “My colleagues and I saw something in a student athlete, but he needed encouragement and a plan for success,” Brandon says. “He resisted initially, but eventually, we were able to help him reach his goals. He earned a full college scholarship, and he's currently thriving in his profession. Our job as educators is to help students reach their full potential. We have 042 ALT Magazine | September 2017
the opportunity every day to show someone they have the ability to achieve something they never thought was possible.”

Far from it. Some situations we can directly influence and others, well…not so much. Many retirees – even those who have planned and saved well for decades – harbor a distant fear that their money may not last as long as they need it to. When it comes to something as important as your retirement income, knowing what you can control, and by how much, may help you rein in that fear and save your energy for the things you can change.

In fact, asset allocation decisions affect total portfolio risk more than any other factor, according to “Determinants of Portfolio Performance,” a study published in the Financial Analysts Journal. Work with your advisor to position assets within your overall portfolio to help preserve and grow assets, and centralize as many investment income resources as possible to potentially reduce fees. How much you spend and save Saving as early – and as much as possible – along with thoughtful spending is completely in your hands. Personal savings and income from working during retirement are expected to play a large role in funding retirees’ futures. Live within your means and prioritize needs over wants with a plan that keeps you accountable and on track. Your advisor can help you decide on a withdrawal rate to keep you comfortable during a long and fulfilling retirement. Depending on market returns, this rate may need adjustments. Consider which unanticipated events you can take early action on (some are easier to protect against) and work with your advisor to run hypothetical scenarios to see what you can handle with confidence. The markets Even with thoughtful planning, no one has ever been able to predict what the market might do–volatility can be particularly challenging when you might not be working. So be thoughtful about what you’ll do if you encounter a series of less-than-ideal market
returns, like tapping into cash reserves to avoid selling in down markets or taking advantage of diversification strategies* where one part of your portfolio may be working when another may not be. Remember, even with a shorter time horizon, retirement isn’t the time to swing for the fences and take on unnecessary risk to attempt to make up for losses. Instead talk to your advisor about ways to boost or diversify income streams. The cost of living and taxes Things cost more over time. The inflation rate for retirement-age Americans is higher because they spend more on items that rise fastest in price, such as healthcare and housing. Taxes can also eat up a chunk of your retirement income. Think about investing a portion of your savings in equities and real assets, which may help hedge against inflation. However, this does involve risk including the possible loss of capital. Or, remember that Social Security is a major income stream that offers cost-of-living adjustments. As for taxes, without knowing when the government may implement a change that may affect you, be sure to take advantage of savings in tax-favored accounts, particularly those geared toward retirement. It may help to know that you can control many of these interconnected factors either directly or indirectly when it comes to fortifying your retirement income strategy. You are your best advocate when it comes to fulfilling your retirement dreams, so be sure to exercise your power thought¬fully and proactively. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Banner Year Over the last few years, we have been fortunate enough to have had excess water in Wright Patman. From a couple of extra feet to as much as 20 extra, with the water coming at the right time we enjoy super spawns. With the higher water, the fish move into water that we as fishermen have a hard time putting a bait. This keeps us from harassing the spawning fish. A larger bonus is that it means better cover for the fry to hide in and grow, so the loss of fry to predation is a lot smaller number. That means more fish that will spawn later and the number just keeps climbing. With that in mind, we are now starting to enjoy the good spawns of the past 4-5 years — and Wright Patman is once again the best kept secret in Texas.
