A NOTE From
THE PUBLISHER
Honoring Those Who Serve and Celebrating Our Community
November is a month that reminds us of the importance of gratitude, community, and the people who make a lasting difference in our lives. As the holiday season approaches, we take time to reflect on what matters most. The people who serve, the businesses that support us, and the community we are proud to call home. In this issue, we are honored to recognize our veterans along with active-duty members. These brave men and women have answered the call to serve our country, sacrificing time with their families, facing challenges most of us may never fully understand, and standing for the freedoms we enjoy every day. Every year around Veterans Day, we are reminded that freedom is carried on the shoulders of people with names, faces, and families. They are our neighbors, our classmates, and our relatives. Many of them grew up on the same streets we did. Their service does not end when they return home. Many continue to serve their communities through leadership, mentorship, advocacy, and acts of kindness. We encourage everyone to take a moment to thank a veteran, listen to their story, and remember the true meaning of their service. Their sacrifices deserve more than a single day of recognition; they deserve our continued respect and appreciation. I learned about Colton Foltz a couple months ago and started to follow his story about his mission, I soon learned that his story was more than a running challenge. He was a Veteran and a strong community advocate. This month we are also highlighting Jordan Johnson and his family of service. We did a story about him multiple years ago, It was nice to learn that he is still continuing his career along with inspired others to take the stand as well. We are excited to recognize our Reader’s Choice nominations. These representation of our readers and the businesses, professionals, and community favorites that make our area special. Behind every nomination, a customer who appreciates great service, a neighbor who supports a local business, or a community member who believes in recognizing those who go above and beyond. Local businesses are more than storefronts and services. They are the people who invest in our community, create opportunities, support local events, and help make our Community better. Your support allows these businesses to continue to grow, serve, and give back. As the holiday season approaches, I encourage you to shop local, support one another, and continue recognizing the people who make a difference. From us at ALT Magazine, thank you for reading, participating, and allowing us to share the stories that matter to you. We are grateful for the opportunity to highlight the people, businesses, and organizations that make our community unique. Wishing you a meaningful Veterans Day, a wonderful Thanksgiving, and a holiday season filled with gratitude, kindness, and community pride.
Alyssa Jensen

HEAL. EVOLVE. THRIVE.
THE TEXARKANA VETERAN COLTON FOLTZ’S ROAD FROM THE FLIGHT DECK TO THE FINISH LINE. On the flight deck of a Navy carrier, the temperature can reach 167 degrees. Below deck, in the racks where sailors try to sleep, it still sits near 90. For a young Aviation Ordnanceman deployed overseas, every day meant showing up for work that was physically punishing and unforgiving of mistakes, then showing up again the next day. What got him through was one thing, the day he would see and hold his daughter again. A Change of Direction Colton Foltz joined the U.S. Navy in 2013. Like many young men, he wanted adventure and the chance to be part of something bigger than himself. He also knew the life he was living was no leading anywhere good. “I needed a change,” he says. The Navy gave him a way out and a direction. As an Aviation Ordnanceman, he built bombs, loaded weapons onto fighter jets, ran weapons elevators and managed the ship’s armory. Foltz also served in military law enforcement and led a team on the ship’s Security Reaction Force, which responded to emergencies, including active shooter situations. The work taught him accountability, teamwork and how to stay calm under pressure. Two moments from his service have stayed with him. The first came in boot camp, when he broke his foot. He knew a trip to medical could set him back, so he said nothing. He pushed through the final four weeks with multiple stress fractures and still passed his physical fitness tests. On the final run, in agonizing pain, he gripped a picture of his daughter in his hand and thought only of the day he would see her again. “I wouldn’t recommend ignoring an injury,” he says. “But that experience taught me just how powerful having a purpose can be when things get difficult.” The second was the pace of his rise. He graduated first in his weapons training class with the highest GPA, which earned him an automatic advancement to E-4. A few months after reaching his first duty station, he became eligible to test for E-5, and he studied relentlessly. On his two-year anniversary in the Navy, while deployed overseas, he learned he had scored in the top 2% of roughly 1,300 sailors. He made E-5 at 21. Leaving the uniform behind turned out to be harder than wearing it. “We go from a world filled with camaraderie, structure, discipline, purpose and high expectations to suddenly being back home, trying to figure out who we are and where we belong,” he says. He went from fast-paced days surrounded by people who understood him to silence, in a world that did not. A L T M a g a z i n e |N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 6

Foltz built a corporate career and chased success, but felt more and more burned out and cut off from his purpose. Along the way, he says, he has been to some very dark places. He struggled with addiction and with suicidal thoughts, and he had moments when he couldn’t see a way forward. Then, during COVID, just three months into his sobriety, he reached a breaking point and asked himself: What am I truly passionate about, and how do I want to show up in this world? He realized he was a warrior who had overcome real challenges, and that his passions were health, wellness, personal growth and helping others. He walked away from his career. To build something bigger and more meaningful. That decision became Taboo Texarkana Events, and later the Universal Vibe Festival. Today Foltz is the founder of Universal Vibe Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to make wellness, art and educational opportunities more accessible to children, veterans and people in recovery. Its mission is three words long: Heal. Evolve. Thrive. He has also spent the past two years with Kiwanis in Texarkana, raising money for local nonprofits that serve children, serving meals to the homeless through Mission Texarkana, and helping at community festivals. The way he leads comes straight from the Navy. “Leadership isn’t about a title or rank,” he says. “It’s about taking responsibility, leading by example, and putting the mission and the people around you before yourself.” In his community work the approach is the same, identify a need, build a team and accomplish the mission. One cause matters most to him. He wants people to learn to care for their mental and physical health before they reach a breaking point, through yoga, meditation, breathwork, fitness, good nutrition and community connection. “Most people were never taught how to slow down, recognize what their bodies are telling them, or develop healthy ways to cope,” he says. “Imagine the impact we could make if we taught people these skills before they found themselves struggling.”
“There will be some incredibly difficult chapters ahead, but we make it through.” 01 2

100 Miles for the Mission On December 5, 2026, he will stand at the start line of the Brazos Bend 100, a 100-mile ultramarathon at Brazos Bend State Park near Houston. He has turned the race into a fundraiser called “100 Miles for the Mission,” with a goal of raising more than $10,000 for five nonprofits: CASA for Children Texarkana, Texarkana Future Leaders, Ben’s Heart Ministry, Heroic Hearts Project, and Universal Vibe Foundation, Inc. Training is close to a second full-time job. Some mornings begin at 2 a.m. so he can get his miles in before a day of physically demanding work, fatherhood and community commitments. Recovery, discipline around sleep and nutrition, and careful time management all take real effort. “Accomplishing something extraordinary requires making consistent sacrifices long before anyone sees you cross the finish line,” he says. He is not only running for the finish. “I’m running for every veteran who can no longer run, every child who needed a safe adult in their life and didn’t have one, every difficult moment I endured in the military, and every time my younger self felt scared, hurt, or alone.” Asked what he would tell the young man who first joined the Navy, he says he would tell him to trust the process, make more friends, laugh more and stop taking everything so seriously. Most of all, he would tell him to take care of his mental health and never be afraid to ask for help. “There will be some incredibly difficult chapters ahead, but we make it through.” To other veterans, Foltz message is that purpose does not disappear with the uniform. It evolves. If you can not find a community where you belong, create one. “You can’t continuously pour from an empty cup.” To the community, he asks for more than a thank-you. Listen without judgment, check on your friends, invite someone to get involved, and make asking for help something people see as courage rather than weakness. And to anyone who feels their story is over, he offers his own as evidence. “Strength isn’t about never struggling. It’s about having the courage to face those struggles, ask for help, and keep moving forward... Sometimes the most beautiful chapters of our lives come after the ones we thought would break us.”
How to help: Donate or learn more at www.universalvibe.org. Sharing the fundraiser, following the journey and spreading the word would help as well.

BROTHERS IN ARMS: A FAMILY’S STORY OF SERVICE A FAMILY’S FULL OF SERVICE FROM EAST TEXAS TO FORT BRAGG
Jordan Johnson
La-Jathan Allen, Jordan Johnson
Sarah Johnson, Benji Johnson, Jordan Johnson
016
Come Sunday morning in East Texas, the family gathered the way it always had, loud and close. Years later, the quiet of those mornings would be the thing they missed most. Captain Jordan “JJ” Johnson was the first to leave. A football scholarship carried him to West Point in the summer of 2017, and he figured the game was the reason he’d gone. Four years of academy life and five more in the operational Army taught him otherwise. Football got him through the gate, but something else kept him there: the people. He had found a community of like-minded men and women whose mindset he wouldn’t find in many places, and he appreciated it more with each passing year. He rose to serve as Chief of Operations for the 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, and now he was preparing himself for command of a battery or company in the same division. Long before the title and the staff work, though, Captain JJ Johnson was simply the older cousin and brother whom the family watched. When he talked about what the Army could do for a young man from East Texas, his cousin La-Jathan Allen listened. Captain JJ Johnson told him joining would shape him, push him to set goals and to become a better person. Uncle Ben said the same, and between the two of them, the decision started to feel less like a leap and more like a next step. His brother Benji Johnson was watching too. He saw the professionalism growing in his brother, in his cousin, and in his brother’s wife as well, and it opened his eyes. Whatever the civilian world offered, he decided, it could not match the lessons and experience of the military.
A LT M a g a z i ne | Nove m b e r 2 0 2 6
When the two of them finally told Captain JJ Johnson they were enlisting, he felt an immense pride, and a quiet optimism. He had always seen service as a catalyst for growth, discipline and selfimprovement. It would carry them out of familiar surroundings, into new cultures and viewpoints, and into a brotherhood that doesn’t fade. He felt confidence, too, in the leaders and men he knew they would become. While Johnson was a lieutenant, he served beside his cousin, Sergeant Allen. Now, as a captain, he was headed to Fort Bragg, where his wife, Captain Sarah Johnson, and his brother would serve there with him. “You can’t beat that,” he said, and he meant it. Service taught each of them something different. For Captain JJ Johnson, it was leadership at two altitudes. At the company level, every decision was personal; it touched the safety, readiness and growth of individual soldiers, and it taught him that real leadership begins with presence, clear communication and accountability. As a captain, he saw the other side: the long hours of planning and analysis, the “homework” that shapes how senior leaders weigh decisions for the whole organization. Holding both views, he came to believe that frontline execution depends on strategic clarity, and that strategy is only as good as the care given to the people carrying it out. For Sargeant Allen, it felt like the football field again, a team, a role leading others, but with a cause behind it. Lately, though, he has faced his hardest stretch: a knee injury that paused his plans to attend Army schools. His unit has stood by him. He recently passed the board, and his platoon sergeant has promised that once he recovers, he will become a squad leader. He plans to make the Army his career. “I couldn’t ask for anything else,” he says. He enjoys it every day, and it makes him a better person. Benji, Specialist Johnson, has learned his own lessons about endurance. The price of this life is distance; the family rarely sees one another now. With that he has come to believe that the struggle does end, and that those who endure the pain of adversity come out stronger. Service has taught the family to think in more calculated ways, and to treat every moment together as a special one. They know, too, that no two soldiers walk the same road. Sargeant Allen puts it plainly: not everyone has the same reason for joining, some have fought a long way just to serve, and everyone’s reason for staying is their own. For him, the Army opened doors to people he would never have met back in East Texas, and relationships born of shared sacrifice. And when they are asked what they hope the next generation will understand about the sacrifices of military families, the answer comes from Specialist Johnson, short and sure: “I hope they see that the sacrifice is worth it.” ___________________

Suzie TK Snippets By: Suzie Tyler
the hard drive, I will blog about it!!
I Am My Father’s Child
I love technology. Suzietk’s Snippets will give you tidbits on everything from makeup to music, and everything in between. I have a wealth of information in my brain! If I can access
37¾, wrote, ‘I became a Christian when I was sixteen years old, but it wasn’t until I was thirty-seven that I absorbed an essential truth. God is nice, and he likes me.’ I am a perfectionist and very rule-oriented! Dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’! I’m not sure whether it was from my parents, a Sunday School teacher, or both, but I always knew God loved me and felt bundled safely in His arms.
It was a person in my early church upbringing who told me Our world is going through a lot of changes, some good, that if I made one mistake, God would ‘thump me into hell.’ some not so good! During that time of my life, I didn’t understand God’s grace and was fearful that I wasn’t doing enough to be saved. I We are being exposed to many different cultures and, yes, placed the responsibility for salvation on me and my abilities, different religious practices. not God’s. We are saved through our faith in Christ and His grace is sufficient. Salvation is not a license to sin, but it is a As older adults, most of us went with our families to Sunday license to be forgiven. School and church in our formative years to learn about Jesus. Our parents were Christians and the heroes of our world. Fortunately for me, I married a man grounded in his faith, who
loved me unconditionally and helped me reaffirm my belief These other ‘religions’ worshiped other gods in foreign that God’s love was enough. My placement in God’s Kingdom countries, and we sent missionaries to teach them about the does not depend on my goodness, following someone’s rules, Jesus of the New Testament. or being perfect, and I don’t have to earn salvation. All God wants in return is my love and obedience to His Word. Now these ‘religions’ have come to our country to convince us that their way of belief is the only way not only for them But before we can tell anyone about God’s love, we must but also for us, and they are willing to take drastic measures experience it first and know that not only does He love me, if we don’t comply. As expected, Christians are resisting their but ‘God likes me; He really, really likes me!’ religious practices in our own homeland! Know your identity, be who you are, and live each day in a way We are in preparation for a spiritual war, fighting for what that will please our Creator. He is for us, not against us, and is we believe, in a battle we’ve never experienced before! As rooting for our success. Christians, we have lived willy-nilly and never had to defend our faith in the God of our fathers. This month we celebrate Thanksgiving and being American. Be thankful in all things, be proud of our country, and know It’s time for us to educate ourselves in what we believe and that God’s love is unconditional! We are our Father’s child! why. Hey, I’m guilty. I’m studying now to prove to myself what I believe. IMPOSTER SYNDROME: HOW AI IS CHANGING THE FACE OF IMPERSONATION SCAMS TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION With fraudsters now testing the limits of artificial intelligence, it can be difficult to trust your own eyes and ears. Here’s what to prepare for in a new world of scams. You know to be on the lookout for suspicious emails, even the ones that include crisp logos and official-looking addresses. You’re quick to scrutinize texts you aren’t expecting, even from contacts you recognize. And you’re skeptical when strangers reach out on social media. But what happens when a scam comes from a voice you could swear is your child’s? From a face that belongs to your neighbor? Or with a raft of documents that seem unfakably official? Imposter scams have been with us since time immemorial, evolving to adapt to societal shifts and advancing along with technology. But the brave new world of AI has given bad actors the means to execute these cons with greater realism and efficiency than ever. It’s no wonder, then, that cybercrime is on the upswing. The Cybersecurity Attitudes and Behaviors Report 2021 – 2025 produced by the National Cybersecurity Alliance found that 44% of participants had been victims of cybercrimes in 2025 – a 10% increase over the five years of the study. To help you be prepared for these increasingly sophisticated fraudsters, we explore the scams you already know and how AI is changing them. FAMILY EMERGENCY SCAMS The classic: Through a sudden string of urgent messages, typically via text, an imposter will pose as a close friend or family member in the midst of an emergency asking you to send critical funds via wire, cash app or gift card. These could also come in as calls from a third party trying to reach the victim on behalf of a relative. The AI upgrade: Scammers can now create deep-fake videos or use voice cloning software and a sample of your loved one’s voice (think a quick video clip from TikTok or Instagram) to conduct entire conversations as that person. A LT M a g a z i ne | Nove m b e r 2 0 2 6
WELL-KNOWN BUSINESS SCAMS The classic: An email or text will inform you of an issue related to your account with a major retailer, like Amazon, or another large-scale popular business, prompting you to provide additional information to complete a transaction or secure your account. The AI upgrade: With generative AI to compose their communications, scammers are able to create more credible messages, free from spelling and grammatical errors that could once alert readers and tailored to the linguistic nuances of specific industries and countries. GOVERNMENT AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER SCAMS The classic: An official purporting to be from a body like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the IRS, or from a local precinct or court system will contact you via phone or email regarding some kind of infraction that requires payment and may even send a representative to your home to collect. The AI upgrade: Here, fraudsters will tap the design capabilities of generative AI to create hyper-realistic documents and images to be used for identification that will appear authentic, often even to the well-trained eye. IF YOU CAN’T TRUST YOUR EARS OR EYES, TRUST YOURSELF Even with the assist from AI, these scams still can and very often do fall apart if you don’t fall for them. Context is key, so if you aren’t expecting communications or something about the interaction seems suspicious or unusual, trust that instinct and report incidents to the proper businesses or authorities where possible. To study up on more cyber-safety trends, visit the FTC’s scams page or our Technology & Innovation articles.
