KEEPING IT REAL From The Publisher

This has been a year of firsts. I have always been someone who took chances, sought challenges, and as I have told many people jumped off the cliff with God holding my hand. I certainly did that last year when I decided, along with my husband, daughter and son-in-law, that I wanted to build an indoor gun range. We had been discussing the idea for several years. With so many gun enthusiasts in our family, it just made sense. This month, we celebrate our first year in business. Working with family has been a part of my life for so long that I can’t remember what it’s like to not be surrounded by them. If you come by the range at any time, you will find one or all of us there helping out. The past year has really proven that working closely together with family can be a wonderful thing. With Thanksgiving coming up this month, I have to say that I am so very thankful for my children and love the wonderful people they have become. My son, Michael, lives in the Dallas area and is what I call a “computer nerd.” He is married with a wonderful wife and children and has done so well with his life, something I would have laughingly wondered about in years past. My daughter, Jaclyn, is the manager of the Firearms store and gun range. Her ability to learn new things and take control never ceases to amaze me. Both of my kids are so much like me that it scares me at times! And just like me, I love interacting with other people. Being the owner of a retail store and gun range, we had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people in this community, many of whom are concerned about being able to protect themselves or their families. It’s such a wonderful feeling to know that you help someone feel better about their safety. Thank you to all of our customers for making this past year such a wonderful one. Throughout the holiday season, please remember to be thankful for those in your lives who have make you smile, laugh, love, and cry. They are, after all, what makes life worth living. May God bless you and yours...

CHASING DREAMS From The Editor

“Be in a state of gratitude for everything that shows up in your life. Be thankful for the storms as well as smooth sailing.” -- Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

As the holidays approach, I find myself reminiscing about all of the great holidays past that I’ve gotten to spend with

family and close friends. I am blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing people throuhgout my life. It’s a time to give thanks, and I am most thankful for all of the relationships God has placed in my life. It is a true blessing to be able to look back and smile at all of the times I’ve gotten to spend with my beautiful family and friends. The older I get, the more I have learned to cherish the special moments we get to be together. Whether it’s traveling to football games, family dinners, shopping trips or just sitting on the couch together drinking coffee and watching TV, these are the moments I am grateful for. I am one lucky girl to be able to enjoy all of these moments with the people I Iove the most. I figure, they’re pretty lucky to get to spend some time with me too, ha!

Just a reminder, to make the most of the time you have together, appreciate the little moments, and love with all

that you have. These are only brief moments in our lifetime, but they are memories we will keep forever. As your enjoying a Thanksgiving feast, remember to look around the table, and give thanks for those you are blessed to share the day with.

Love, Dogs, and Guns… It’s what makes life grand. WORDS BY Debbie Brower

Creative people tend to migrate toward one another. Maybe it’s because they are involved in the same activities. Maybe it’s because they long for someone who can share their joy at making something out of nothing. Maybe it’s just an instant attraction that God sends their way. Whatever the reason, it happens. The creative outlet that brought Jaclyn and Marshall Gooding together was Texas High’s Tigervision program, which allows students to produce video segments for the school’s television program and broadcast it throughout the high school. Jaclyn was in the 10th grade, Marshall was in 11th. It was not unusual to see Jaclyn, microphone in hand, interviewing a subject on

the football field, with Marshall standing behind her with a camera, taking it all in. That creative bond brought them together initially. Their love for each other kept them together throughout high school and college, eventually getting married in 2008. As Jaclyn always stated, “Marshall is just meant to be my husband. I know I will marry him one day.” It’s funny how two people, who met at such a young age, mature and enjoy the same things. Rescuing animals has become a passion of theirs. They typically have at least one, and possibly two, fosters dogs residing in their home. “There are so many animals that could be saved if there were foster homes available,”

Jaclyn explains. “Many people think that rescues are only mutts, which often make wonderful pets regardless of being mixed breeds, but there are so many full blooded dogs out there, as well. We foster poodles, but there are many other breeds that need foster homes until they can find a permanent home. Rescues of both dogs and cats are always looking for fosters.” So they step up and do their part. These babies are their family – and they have five of their own! That’s right, five! One standard poodle, Scout, and four toy poodles, Graham, Teddy, Jake and Tucker, along with their current foster, Gibbs, another Standard Poodle that may end up being a part of the Gooding crew after staying with them several months going through heart worm treatment. There is enough love to go around!

As time goes by, things change – and so do jobs! For Jaclyn and Marshall, that change came when they became a part of two businesses – Legendary Paintball and Legendary Shooting Sports. Paintball is a lot of fun – if you don’t mind a little sting if you get shot! It is typically a male dominated sport. However, Jaclyn never let that stop her! For someone who grew up as a tomboy, took a detour to do a pageant or two in high school and early college, then went back to what she loved, paintball is a wonderful sport! Marshall introduced her to the sport of paintball and now, she and Marshall enjoy competing in tournaments together, spending many hours practicing and watching professional tournaments on the internet. It isn’t unusual for either of them to come in with a few bruises here

Both Jaclyn and Marshall have always been very family oriented, keeping in close contact with the parents, brothers and sisters. It was no surprise that they chose to work with family when they graduated from college, got married, and chose a career path. Marshall’s creativity helped

put her photography skills to work with the family photography business, and eventually ALT Magazine. For most people, working closely with your family can become a problem. For Jaclyn and Marshall, although there are tense times occasionally from being together most all the time, they understand and work through it.

and there from being hit. It’s all in the fun of the game. Who doesn’t enjoy going out and shooting at other people in a fun game of sport! The paintball park is fun for kids of all ages – with both paintball and Splatmaster, a low impact version of paintball, offered -and these two “kids” just happen to enjoy playing as much as running the business. Legendary Shooting Sports opened as a firearms store only a couple of years ago. The store was only open 3 hours each day to the public, although they took phone calls and special orders over the phone. The idea was always in the back of the owners’ minds to open

an indoor shooting range, and that idea came to fruition last November with the help of coowners, Mike and Debbie Brower. With four lanes, climate control, and electronic target retrieval systems, the range has become a destination for men, women and families. Jaclyn and Marshall, coowners, manage the store and range. Both are certified NRA range safety officers,

NRA instructors and certified Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) instructors. Marshall explains, “When we took our CHL class, there was no option for an indoor range to test in. We were required to travel thirty minutes out of town to a range, which added an additional hour or more to the class time. Now, at our range, you can just walk next door and shoot. Rain, shine, hot or cold, it is the same in the range. Customers love it!” On any given day, you will find one of them working behind the counter, many times with Scout and Gibbs, the standard poodles, keeping watch. Of course, Marshall works around his decorative concrete jobs, but he still manages to enjoy working at the range regularly. As he says, “All kinds of interesting people walk in the door and we love talking to them and helping them.” For women wanting to learn how to handle their gun safely, Jaclyn is their instructor. “Private lessons help so many people feel more comfortable and many woman just do not want their husbands/boyfriends to help them, for whatever reason,” Jaclyn shares. Raymond Calhoun, who many know from years with the police force and at TISD, is also an instructor at the range. For advanced lessons, Raymond is obviously highly qualified, having been an instructor for the police force for many years. Progressing from young love in high school, to marriage, to working together, Marshall and Jaclyn have found their niche – guns! Whether paintball or firearms, they love playing, shooting, and helping others learn. November is the one year anniversary of the opening of Legendary Shooting Sports’ Indoor Gun Range! It’s a time of celebration for these two high school sweethearts! Come meet them and see what it’s all about!

Life’s Luxuries WORDS BY Anne Fruge

November 2015

“Nobody wants to be pigeon-holed. I don’t want to be defined by my job. There are so many things that I want to be a part of who I am, things that this town has allowed me to do, as cliche as that sounds. People are always more complex than we give them credit for,” Alan Harrel told me this in his office; the quote was said without exasperation or annoyance and came with a sly smile that I’m sure those who know him best are very familiar with. Though I was there to interview him for a story in our Veteran’s Day issue, I couldn’t agree more. Surrounded by beautiful Western art, awards and accolades for his community service work and his years spent as a defense lawyer, and smiling photos of him and his wife of 44 years, Jeanne, I knew that there were many experiences and angles of Alan’s life to share. The beginning of Alan’s life included a detail that caught my interest immediately. Alan was born in Miami, but moved to Houston, Detroit and finally, Little Rock, all by the time Alan was eight-years-old. Their various relocations were all due to the fact that Alan’s father was an FBI agent who began when Hoover was director. According to Alan, he left the house every day at 7:30 a.m. and returned at 6:30 p.m. The long hours were less than optimal, but his father was able to work many notable jobs in racial discrimination, the JFK assassination and in Mississippi civil rights. “My father was not a very strong presence in my life, simply because he was not there a lot of the time,” Alan says. “Today I have the great luxury to take off work and go see my kids and grandkids. I was able to be at their school events and sporting events. My father did not have that luxury.” In school, Alan loved reading and was on the debate team. While enrolled at Westminster College, a small men’s school, Alan studied English and started acting in plays. These two loves still play a large part in Alan’s life today. He keeps a journal and loves to read historical fiction and spy novels. He appreciates good, modern fiction and short stories by Eduora Welty and Ellen Gilcrest. At the time of this interview, he was reading 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and 7 Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Lawrence. Though Alan’s first role on the stage was Tom in Tennessee William’s Glass Menagerie while at Westminster, Alan has added many characters to his repertoire through the years of his involvement with TexRep. Another love got its start while in college: on the set of South Pacific, Alan got the first glimpse of the woman who would later be his wife. “She was on a ladder and had on this pair of shorts. What can I say? The woman has great legs!” Alan says. “Jeanne was a year younger than me and was enrolled at William Woods, a girls’ school down the street from Westminster. We both worked in the theatre department and started dating in the fall of 1968.” When Alan graduated with a degree in English in 1969, he had no aspirations of a career in the military, but it seemed like a very good possibility that he would have one. America was in the throes of the Vietnam War, and a draft was imminent. Alan spoke to the draft board and was told he would, in all likelihood, be drafted by the following June. Alan’s father, a veteran of the Navy, encouraged Alan to volunteer for the Army, which only came with a two-year term. “At that time, the chances of being sent to Vietnam were relatively high and Army recruits were on the ground in combat. I decided that I’d rather be above it if I was going to be there at all and signed up for the Air Force,” Alan says. “Signing up meant a six year commitment: a year of pilot training and a five year term.” Alan was sent to Lubbock, Texas, to Reese Air Force Base on April 7, 1970, after officer training school for a 53 week pilot training course where he learned to fly jets. He even showed me a picture in his office of him with a cocked hat, aviators and a mustache next to his T-38 jet. “You know what’s funny? So many people come in my office and tell me that they or someone they know has the exact same picture. I guess they took one for everybody,” Alan says with a laugh. “I enjoyed flying. There is a certain bit of fear starting out, but as long as you respect the aircraft, then everything is fine. All of the guys in our class made it through; the first casualty wasn’t until after pilot training. While in training, Alan decided to ask Jeanne to marry him. “She was, and is, really smart, good-looking and had a strong personality. I knew I was going to the military and I needed someone who could be strong. But, when I asked her to marry me, she said ‘no,’” Alan says. “I asked her over spring break, and I already had this big party planned in Little Rock to celebrate. I really thought she would say ‘yes.’ Even though I was shocked, I still wanted her to come, and she did. A few days later, she asked me to ask her again. I don’t know why she changed her mind. Maybe she thought I was worth taking a chance on!” The two were married on December 29, 1970, because Alan’s only time off was at Christmas. When Alan finished training in April of 1971, he was ranked 12th in his class and November 2015

was able to choose what plane he wanted. He choose the O2 Skymaster, a forward air control aircraft and a plane that would take him directly to Vietnam. “Man, Jeanne was not happy about that,” Alan says. “I thought we all would have to go there eventually, but I ended up being wrong! I was sent to Vietnam in July of 1971 for a year. So, we were newlyweds and basically spent the next year apart.” Jeanne, not wanting to be alone, moved back to Chicago where her parents lived. She got a job at Marshall Fields department store and waited for Alan to return. In that time, the couple wrote each other letters that they still have today. While Alan was in the Air Force, daughter Julie was born in 1973. “I’m not sure she had a good handle on who the guy in the blue suit was until a couple of years later,” Alan says. Their son, Nick, was born in Texarkana in 1979. The O2 Skymaster that Alan chose had a long loiter time of about 4.5 to 5 hours and was used to support local ground operations. Throughout his year in Vietnam, Alan flew 160 combat missions to Vietnam and Cambodia. He used smoke rockets to mark targets. He would spot enemy movements on the ground and call for fighters. “We were only vulnerable once they figured out what we were doing, and then fighter planes would be right behind us, but we just tried to roll in and roll right back out,” Alan says. “We didn’t have to trudge through the mud, and a lot of guys had it so much worse than we did. Still, it was a different feeling when you are up there by yourself or with just one other person to your right. I had this southern boy’s notion of chivalry and how you would act in a war, but the rules of engagement were so restricting. It was futile and frustrating a lot of the time.” It was easy for Alan to make friends in the Air Force. They were all officers, and they were mostly all married with college degrees. “We were all in the same boat,” Alan says. “We had all volunteered for this. We had decided it was the right thing to do at the time. Being in the military grows you up fast. Being subjected to serious circumstances, literally life or death at times, made me understand or, at least consider, serious questions. Even in

26

peacetime, airplanes crash and people die. I wasn’t always pleased with what we did, but I was pleased to serve my country.” In July of 1972, Alan was assigned to fly a B52 bomber with a nuclear mission and replaced flying one of the smallest planes for flying one of the largest. He was sent to California to training, and then was stationed at Spokane, Washington, for the rest of his term from 1973-1976. In those years, Alan’s bomber squadron was sent in 6 month intervals to Guam, even though the war was coming to a close. “Because of the times and international relations, if Russia did something, America did the opposite,” Alan says. “A lot of us came to see that the Vietnam War was a civil war that was going to be fought no matter what, but the bigger powers were using it as proxy war. It played a large role in my generation and our growing up. Who wants to risk your life for something you don’t believe is in the best interest of our country? However, time in the military teaches you respect for chain of command, team-work and maturity. Though I look back at my letters and see how ready I was to come home, I wouldn’t exchange my time in the military for anything.” Many of the skills he learned in this time are ones that Alan uses today. For example, his father gave him some advice before he was deployed. He told Alan that though he wouldn’t know anyone at first, he should look for a master sergeant in his squadron who knew what was going on and make friends with that guy. “We all lived together and flew together. Rank really wasn’t the big issue or factor; instead, it came down to respect for someone who did a good job. You learn to respect people, and I believe this plays out into everything you do,” Alan says. “At any job, you have supervisors and you respect them, but the real worth of any institution is the good people that work there.” As his military term came to a close, Alan began thinking about going to law school. “I thought, ‘Well, I’m good on my feet and I can put on a good presentation,’” Alan says. “My mind was agile enough to understand both

sides, something that a lawyer has to do or they can be trapped or tricked. You have to know how the other side thinks, or you will be at a disadvantage.” Alan started school at Gonzaga University while in Spokane. He says that you’ve never really been interrogated until “the Jesuit priests use the Socratic Method on you.” He finished his law degree in 1978 at University of Arkansas in Little Rock. At this time, Nick Patton, a plaintiff lawyer at Young, Patton and Folsom, contacted Alan and asked him to come work for them, promising him lots of time in the courtroom. However, Jeanne was not wild about the idea of moving to Texarkana, a place without family or friends. The couple ended up making the move, and Alan worked at Young, Patton and Folsom until he moved to his current firm, Atchley, Russell, Waldrop and Hlavinka, in 1981. Alan specializes in medical malpractice law, which he truly loves. He currently represents Collom and Carney clinic in Texarkana. “I love learning about the practice of medicine, and I love the creative worrying that comes with practicing law,” Alan says. “I love the challenge, though it has given me a lot of gray hair! lawyer that is a bully, so you learn to treat people with respect. Jurors aren’t stupid; they can figure it out. They get it right the vast majority of the time no matter how complicated the case is.” If you need Alan’s expertise and you go to his office, one of the first things you will notice is the Western art decorating the walls and creating a central theme. When Jeanne’s parents retired, they moved to Arizona, and while on visits, Alan fell in love with regional art. His office displays several of Frank McCarthy’s pieces. Frank McCarthy was a founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America. Alan also has several Howard Terpning prints and a bronze Jimmy Cox of a forlorn cowboy in a winter windstorm titled, “I could have been a lawyer.” “I saw that title and had to buy it,” Alan says. Alan and his wife have several opportunities each year to visit Arizona and collect Western art because their son Nick, a general surgeon, lives in Phoenix. He is married to Kaelyn, and their daughter, Kiera, was Alan and Jeanne’s first grandchild. Their daughter, Julie, lives in Austin and works for Entrust/Data Card, a cyber security firm out of Dallas. Julie and her husband Chris are expecting their first child in November. “Jeanne has become a crazed grandmother,” Alan says with a smile. “We are so lucky that at this time in our life, I can take off a bit more, and we go visit the kids often.” Alan also enjoys fly-fishing on the Little Red River and in Colorado, Montana or Wyoming. He proclaims there is nothing better or more relaxing than “standing in the middle of a river and catching a trout.” The couple also loves travel to national parks and overseas to Italy. They’ve visited the country three times. When they aren’t enjoying the pleasure of being grandparents or traveling, Alan and Jeanne are very involved with the Texarkana community. “We didn’t know how we would fit in here at first,” Alan says. “There’s always that idea of being an ‘outsider,’ especially in a tight-knit community like this one, but that was never the case. I feel like I can be good at my job because this community took a chance on me, and then I give back to the community. Here in Texarkana there are so many people who see things this way; getting from the community and giving back blend in so seamlessly. I’ve always admired Texarkana for that.”

Alan has served the Wadley Foundation on the board and as their president. He is a rotarian at Wilbur Smith Rotary Club, and on the night of this interview, he was heading to a Randy Sam’s drawdown fundraiser. However, Alan’s passion for the arts carries over to one of his largest community involvements as a founding member of TexRep along with Fred Norton, Josh Morris and others. “We thought it was time to make a change for the arts in Texarkana,” Alan says. “We put on three or four plays a year and run a drama camp in the summer which is such a great opportunity for our youth. It’s a chance for them to learn who they are and what they believe. I enjoy acting because it uses a different side of your brain. You are with a different group of people than in your normal job, and and you are participating in this incredible process of inhabiting a character on stage.” The parts that Alan has played range from Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt in Annie to Drummond in Inherit the Wind and King Henry II in Lion in Winter. “I’m just fascinated with live stage performances,” Alan says. “Live theatre is unlike anything else. All manner of plays can reach people. You are exposed to these words by famous authors and these really interesting plots and themes right there in front of you on stage. You know, it’s not like having to invest a couple of days in reading a book, which I do love, but in just two hours, you go through this whole journey with these characters and have this catharsis at the end. You learn so much about our shared human condition.” As the interview came to a close, I just had a final question. “With all these great accomplishments and life-experiences, what are you the most proud of?” I asked. Alan glanced around his office at the pictures and awards and paintings and books and this was his reply, “I’m proud that I raised a family. I like my job, and I want to be good at it, but I don’t consider it some great thing that I’ve done. No one ever lays on their deathbed and wishes they could work a few more hours. Being a good friend is more important than that, and there’s isn’t much of anything more important than raising a family. In the end, we all want to be known for the things that have been the best part of our lives. Good father, good husband, good lawyer, good citizen--that’s what I hope I am.”

“I’m set on doing this.” 11 year-old Shelby Dunphy-Day sits across the table dressed in her soccer gear and spills out her plan for the Six Leg Fun Run and 5K. Shelby has spearheaded an effort to plan, organize, and execute two races that will take place in downtown Texarkana at the end of January. While the idea was born during a brainstorm session for a leadership project, Shelby has breathed life into it with a determined heart. This well-spoken and charismatic young lady is blazing a trail of her own to help raise money for the local animal shelter. Shelby attends College Hill Middle School- Academy of Design, at which she takes part in the Environmental and Spatial Technology (E.A.S.T.) class that plans and presents projects. Such projects are presented at leadership conferences that require students to design, plan, and complete a project intended to benefit the community. Shelby knew she wanted to come up with a way to help the animal shelter. She credits her own rescue animals, Fable and Tiger, for inspiring her to help animals in need. Fable is her four year-old cat that “acts like a dog,” and Tiger is her “fat cat.” Shelby spent the majority of her summer preparing to get her project underway. She didn’t slow down when school started again this fall, however. Shelby is the president of her student council, she plays soccer and tennis, and she volunteers her time to take part in the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department’s outreach program, P.R.I.D.E. (Personal Responsibility In Daily Efforts). P.R.I.D.E. is a program sponsored by T.A.P.D. that helps build positive relationships with the community and encourages students in the Arkansas school district to make good choices. Additionally, the program teaches students how to be effective leaders within their community. Shelby’s participation and leadership in this program proved to be an invaluable asset for getting her idea for the race off the ground. Shelby “did all the talking” to multiple leaders within the Texarkana community, including Texarkana, Arkansas’ city manager, Dr. Kenneth Haskin; Animal Care and Adoption Center Director, Charles Lokey; both of Texas and Arkansas’ Chiefs of Police for Texarkana, Daniel Shiner and Robert Harrison, respectively; Miller County Sheriff Ron Stovall; T.A.P.D. Information officer and P.R.I.D.E. Coordinator, Cpl. Kristi Bennett; P.R.I.D.E. Officers, Cpl. Les Munn and Officer Rick Cockrell; Ross Cowling, Parks and Recreation November 2015

Superintendent; HandsOn Texarkana, a 501 (c)(3) Nonprofit organization; J.R. Arnold, Principal of College Hill Middle School Academy of Design; and many more community leaders and board members. Shelby created an aerial map of the two race routes to submit for approval. After some discussion, both Arkansas and Texas approved the route for the Fun Run and the 5K. When it was time to propose the even to the city council, police officers from the P.R.I.D.E program, as well as influential city leaders showed up to hear Shelby speak out for this event. Shelby’s mom, Kacy Dunphy, “recorded the whole thing” and was, I’m certain, beaming with pride and her young daughter stood up for society’s most helpless creatures. When I asked Kacy what it was like to be Shelby’s mother, she smiled and said, “busy.” I could tell that she uttered that single word with all the pride a mother could hold. While many mothers are proud of their children and see success in their futures, it is quite clear to Kacy that her child is destined for greatness. To be responsible for such an influential event is a great burden for any person, much less for a young lady who is only 11. Shelby wanted to come up with a way to create an event that “benefits the Animal Care & Adoption Center, promotes Downtown Texarkana, and encourages volunteerism.” Shelby’s grandparents, Patrick and Kathleen Dunphy, “play such important roles in her life,” her mother said. They have supported her both in spirit and in action. Often times, they would take Shelby to and from meetings while her mom was working. It is quite obvious that Shelby has a strong, supportive family and community that helps her to fulfill her dream to help animals. “Really, there is only one reason why I am putting this race on. It is not to get a better grade in school, not because someone is making me do it.

It is only because I want to help Charles Lokey get the animals in the shelter adopted.” The Six Leg Fun Run and 5K is an event that will host two races, a pet contest, and promote animal adoption. Shelby is looking to have vendors and a Pet Photographer there as well. Participants can run a 5K with their best fur-friends, or, if both dog and owner prefer a shorter race, they can elect to enter the one mile Fun Run. “You know, that’s why there’s six legs; two human legs and four animal legs.” The inaugural race will take place on January 31, 2016. Planning the race for 2:00 on a Sunday afternoon offers less traffic interference in order to increase the safety of our four-legged friends that may be downtown to race, compete in the contest, get micro-chipped, or simply to spectate. There will be “two-legged and four-legged” awards for both races,

as well as awards granted in the pet contest. Registration and fees for the 5K and Fun Run are as follows: 5K early registration is $25, regular registration is $30, and “week of” registration is $35; Fun Run registration is $10, regular registration is $15, and “week of” registration is $20. Because Shelby and those who support her want to promote physical wellness as much as they want to promote community involvement, children ages 12-18 years can be sponsored to run the 5K for only $5. Their hope is that this will increase awareness of community needs in students. Schools can sponsor their students as well. All proceeds are donated to the Texarkana Animal Care and Adoption Center. HandsOn Texarkana has allowed Six Leg Fun Run and 5K to operate under their 501 (c)(3) non-profit umbrella, making donations

tax deductible. We can all learn a lesson from Shelby Dunphy-Day. No one is ever too little, too young, or too busy to help, even if it is just a little bit. She has organized an event that will not only help orphaned animals but will create interest and awareness of Downtown Texarkana. Surely there is something we can do to run alongside Shelby and her furry friends at the animal shelter to help out. The event is still looking for vendors, sponsors, and donors. There is always a way to get your tail moving to make a difference (pun intended). The idea is for this event to be community wide so find a way to contribute. If you cannot support the event monetarily, you can volunteer your time to help set up and host the race, or you can give your time like Shelby does and visit the animal shelter. Volunteer help is always welcome. Even if you simply play with the animals or teach one a new trick, you are making a difference. For more information on the race you can like the Facebook page, Sixlegfunrun, follow sixlegfunrun on Instagram, or visit the official website at www.sixlegfunrun.com. Let’s follow Shelby’s lead and get our tails moving, Texarkana.

Passionate Care WORDS BY Lindsey Gordon

November 2015

Texarkana is proud to welcome the Texarkana Emergency Center to the Ark-La-Tex. Specializing in emergency medicine within the comfort of an outstanding, professional, upscale clinical environment, the Texarkana Emergency Center is the place to go for great care in an emergency situation. It is the first of it’s kind in this area. Owned and operated by a group of local, board certified physicians. The professionally trained staff at the Texarkana Emergency Center live, work, play and pray in the Texarkana community. As a team, they believe it is most important to treat every patient as they would want to be treated. “We strive to be kind, compassionate, caring professionals, whom feel responsible for the care we give our customers,” explains Dr. Young. Dr. Young began this business with the belief that Texarkana Emergency Center and its team will provide the best emergency care everyone deserves in a convenient, proficient and timely manner. Their motto is “Real ER without the wait.” All patients who enter the Texarkana Emergency Center will be treated with respect and professionalism in a convenient way. “We will provide a care that starts at the beginning of their illness and/or injury to securing appropriate follow-up resolutions and be there for the patients during the entire process,” explains Dr. Young. He has a strong belief that you should always treat others as you would want to be treated. “Simple gestures such as a cup of coffee or a snack for a relative, a blanket for a cold patient or a call to the patient’s primary care physician or specialist for a follow-up are

all things that set us apart as a business,” Dr. Young says. The Texarkana Emergency Center will be a home away from home for those in need of the best emergency care. The Texarkana Emergency Center strives to provide outstanding care 24/7 365 days a year. They are built of experienced professional physicians and team members that are accustomed to dealing with all medical, pediatric and trauma emergent needs. Their doors are always open for the community. “We are far and above the most professional, efficient place to receive your emergency care,” explains Dr. Young, “always open, always available, and always with the most qualified emergency physicians and staff in the Ark-La-Tex.” The Texarkana Emergency Center is a new business, but not new people. The staff and physicians are local members of the Texarkana community and have and will continue to support the community throughout all of their charities and philanthropies. “We will forever be involved in the care of not just our patients, but our community.” They have strong support systems in local, civic, school and religious organizations and will continue to be a leader in the community through the Texarkana Emergency Center. They are centrally located in the heart of Texarkana, beside the Hilton Garden Inn and Texarkana Convention Center and across from Central Mall. Make sure and come to Texarkana Emergency Center for all of your emergency care needs, opening this November. November 2015

Unknown Lake Prep If you are going to a lake you have never been to and expect to catch some of those wiley black bass, you should at least put in some prep work before you go. This includes buying a map of the lake or looking on Google Earth to see what you will be up against. If you go the map route, get one with contours, but beware that some maps are better than others where contours are concerned. If you go the Google Earth route, you can get a really good overview as to bank terrain, docks, shape of points and just a general lay out of the lake. I like to use the Navionics maps on my GPS as well as Google Earth on my computer (which I carry with me and keep in the room.) That way I can compare what I know about bank terrain on the water to find other places that have the same features. Now is a good time to visit the issue of “dock talk,” or talking to too many people about the lake. Personally, I like to

find one person I trust to give me answers to two questions: (1) What is the predominate species of bass? and, (2) depending on time of year, water clarity. The answers to these two questions will help me try to find the fish that are catchable. After I set up patterns to give me the best opportunity to catch a limit, then I can concentrate on what I need to do to catch better quality fish. “Dock talk” can and will only serve to confuse you and send you off in directions you don’t need to go. Talking and listening to a bunch or even a couple of people you don’t know might get too many possible patterns in your head and you will not give any one pattern time to develop. Always go to a new lake with a game plan and let the fish tell you what you are doing right and wrong. The fish won’t lie...they just move, quit biting, or don’t like you.

Clay and I met while teaching and coaching at the same school. It took us a few weeks to finally “hangout. We started slow by going to get lunch together with other co-workers. We just chalk it up to we were just two people in the same place at the right time. After hanging out a couple times it became apparent that we shared a lot of similar interests, views, hopes and future plans. After nine months of dating, Clay asked my dad for his blessing and Clay proposed while we were open gifts on Christmas Morning. We spend our free time making fun of each other, spending lots of time with our families, going to baseball games and concerts, or supporting one another at sporting events. (We both teach and coach). Our wedding was stress free and an all around great time. Everyone who is close to us was there to celebrate with us and we loved every minute of it. Whether we were planning with the florist or picking the venue, we just had a blast though the entire process. 52

COWBOY BOOTS

In the 1920s and 1930s cowboy boots became a fashion item as a result of the movies and radio shows about the Wild West. After 1940 boot designs became more colorful and intricate incorporating images of the west such as cacti, eagles, horses and horseshoes. In the 1950s when rodeos became a popular form of entertainment and country music started being heard, the popularity of cowboy boots skyrocketed and millions of pairs were reportedly being made in all shapes, colors and styles. http://www.thewildwest.org/cowboys 76

THE BURGER

How big was the biggest Hamburger? Well, it was a giant. In 1982, 10,000 people came to taste the largest Hamburger ever built. Even if it was just a single bite; imagine the mammoth size that was needed to feed those 10,000 mouths. The burger weighed a staggering 3,591 pounds. http://factslegend. org/20-facts-burgers/

No Tax on Your Estate? You Still Need a Plan By Dustin Stringer With all the debate and discussion related to estate taxes over the years, you might think that taxes are the single most important consideration in estate planning. In reality, the federal estate tax exemption of $5.43 million for individuals and $10.68 million for married couples means that the tax does not apply to the vast majority of estates. Meanwhile, most states don’t have an estate tax at all. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need a plan. For most people, the main focus of estate planning is not taxes but inheritance planning — figuring out how to pass on assets to loved ones in the most beneficial manner, financial and otherwise. The most common estate planning questions we get from clients center on how their assets will be distributed and what will happen when they aren’t there to make decisions. They include: •When I’m gone, how will my money be transferred to the next generation? •If I’m not able to manage my affairs, who will? •If something happens to me, who will make medical decisions on my behalf? These are just a few of the important questions an estate plan should address. We recently chatted with a new client about his circumstances. He’s in his 50s, unmarried with two young adult children, and he has a net worth of approximately $3 million. He has investment assets spread out among several brokers, real estate holdings located in different states and managed by family 84

November 2015

members, and valuable personal belongings. When he came to us, the estate planning documents he had in place were almost 10 years old. He works with several stockbrokers and annuity salespeople and has long-term relationships with an attorney and with a CPA who prepares and files his taxes. Yet not one of these professionals made sure his estate plan was current. Our client was primarily interested in getting all of his important estate and financial documents — like wills, trusts and beneficiary designations — updated, organized and consolidated in one place. Now that we have reviewed everything, he can clearly communicate his wishes to his children, especially regarding their inheritance. A big part of the inheritance will be in retirement accounts. Most of his liquid assets are in IRA and 401(k) accounts with a designated beneficiary, so those assets will pass directly to the beneficiary. It’s important to note that such a beneficiary designation takes precedence over the provisions of a will or trust. Some of his non-IRA accounts have been set up with a “Transfer on Death” beneficiary designation, which also trumps a will or trust. In this case, the assets will pass to the named recipient on the account without having to go through probate (the legal process of administering an estate after a person’s death). Making sure your beneficiary designations are in place and up to date can help avoid the onerous probate process, which this client’s estate is now well positioned to do. On top of that, our conversations yielded tens of thousands of dollars of potential tax and financial savings. Because he was working with so many people (and everyone seemed to have tunnel vision, focusing only on one piece of his financial puzzle), no one had guided him to address the whole picture. Our conversation helped him realize he needed to sit down with his attorney and update his plan. Now, no matter what happens going forward, he will have peace of mind knowing that his inheritance wishes will be addressed. Can you say the same? Have you reviewed your estate plan lately? If you haven’t updated or reviewed your documents, it may affect your inheritance plan. This article was originally published on NerdWallet. com. These pets can’t seem to

Catch a Break WORDS BY ANDREA CHEWNING, TEXARKANA ANIMAL LEAGUE

Every year in our area, hundreds of what should be loved, household pets (mainly dogs and cats) are rescued from homelessness or abusive/neglectful homes and freed from lives of fear and starvation, pain and loneliness. This worthwhile purpose is undertaken by the local animal rescue groups and the foster families that help them. The rescued animals receive treatment for their physical problems such as malnutrition, heartworm, and various injuries; and they also find comfort in the patience and care given to their damaged spirits and personalities.

a little extra attention, a lot of patience and heaps of healing love. As a foster family, you provide a wonderful ‘in-home’ transition between life before and life after adoption. You provide time for an animal to be placed with a forever home and you provide an invaluable service to the animal rescue and to the animal itself. A foster family may also give flexibility to allow potential adopters to see the animal or they make the animal available for visits. Foster families also work to socialize an animal that has been isolated by displaying kindness and, most of all, love, perhaps never before shown to an abused creature. Without foster homes, many more of these unfortunate animals would have to be euthanized for lack of physical space. Fostering rescued animals is a genuine way to give back to the community and gain a sense of accomplishment.

Our area rescue groups cannot realistically take in the overwhelming number of animals that are rescued without the help of foster homes. Foster homes are individuals and families who offer a warm bed and healing attention to an animal that may have never known a kind human touch or has long since forgotten it. The rescues need just a place for the animals to live until homes can be found. The rescues will often match foster dogs and cats to families, working as closely with that family as possible to give them exactly what works best. Some foster families take in a single animal only or an entire litter, while others may desire only grown dogs or just cats, or any mix between. Foster families may also need to transport the rescued animal to the vet when medical care is necessary and they need to let the rescue know if there are any behavioral problems that should be addressed. In the case of dogs, some light training may be requested. More often than not, foster parents are asked to show the rescued animal 88

or dwell in the past.

The effects of such horrors are evident and deep, but not necessarily permanent, thanks to the “now” mindset of most animals and the inability to worry about the future

The amount of poor stewardship, abuse and neglect that occurs annually in this country concerning often harmless animals is staggering. You are indispensable in the battle for humane treatment of this planet’s furry citizens; they need you to take action for them. Make a difference in your life, the life of a rescued animal and even the life of the family who adopts sweet Rover or Fluffy: consider becoming a foster family for animals and shelters in need.
