The earth is a fascinating place. As I have grown older, my desire to see places I’ve always dreamed of has become a force in my life. This past August, Mike and I took a cruise to Alaska. It was a trip Mike had been dreaming of for years, and I went along with it because I just love to see new things. I wasn’t too happy about the fact that it was cold and I am not a cold weather person. I own very few really warm clothes and was worried I would freeze the entire time I was there.

I was pleasantly surprised that it was in the 70’s during the day and the upper 40’s at night. Leaving northeast Texas’ over 100 degree temps and going to Alaska in late August was such a wonderful thing! It was the trip of a lifetime.

If you do not believe in God’s amazing glory, go to Alaska.

You will see all of the things He has made first-hand -untouched by all of the city life, construction, traffic -- all the things that make up life here. Those things were nonexistent. The wonder and the beauty will take your breath away. How can anyone believe that all of that beauty just happened without the intervention of something bigger than us? I was sold on Alaska -- and at this point, we are planning to return there in the near future. I can not wait.

I am a “beach bum.” I could literally take a good book, a towel, and a chair, head to a beach, and be happy. Mike has never liked the beach. Whether it’s the sand, the salt, or just the lack of something to do (because he always has to be busy), he has never enjoyed it. Growing up only an hour away, I was on the beach almost every weekend during the summer. We would start on our tans in March in preparation for beach time. I remember baby oil, iodine, foil-lined tanning blankets, and lots of sun! I check myself daily now to make sure I don’t have skin cancer. We never worried about that back then. The darker the better...and we worked on it diligently.

Nowadays, I use self tanner and make sure I wear sunscreen when I am in the sun. My beach trips are joyous affairs with my kids, who love it as much as I do.

We have plans for Orange Beach already this summer -photographing a wedding while we are there -- and plans for a cruise to the saints, as I call it, next March. My dream has always been to go to the Caribbean islands and visit St. John, St. Marten, St. Lucia -- you know, all the saints! Mike encouraged Jaclyn and I to make plans for next year, so we have. I can not wait for that one, too!

People may say I don’t have much in my house, a really fancy car, or a lot of jewelry, but what I do have are memories. Memories with my husband, my kids, my friends, and my dogs. I love my life. I love this country I live in. I plan to continue to see what God has made and make more memories.

The earth is amazing. Just check out the photos that were submitted this issue. You will see beauty everywhere you go. Enjoy it while you can. Memories last forever.

Christy Breiby (Mullinax) is the picture of fierce resilience. She exudes a particular kind of strength, tenacity and confidence that can’t be ignored. Yet, just looking at her you’d never know that there was a battle storming within her, one she’s determined to win for herself and others. As one of millions of people afflicted with Lyme disease, Christy, is dedicated to promoting more awareness in Texarkana and beyond for one of the world’s most debilitating and misunderstood diseases.

Lyme is the fastest growing infectious bacterial disease in the USA. Lyme disease is caused by a spiral shaped bacteria (spirochete) called Borrelia. There are 100 different strains of Borrelia in the USA and 300 worldwide.

In the USA, Lyme disease is twice as common as Breast Cancer and six times as common as AIDS. lymestats.org

A Texarkana native and mother of two, Christy has always maintained an active lifestyle. She was the first female athlete from Texas High to advance to state in swimming, and held ten high school swim records (eight of which still stand), which lead to her being awarded a full athletic scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. Yet, while training for a competition last summer she noticed her performance was waning. “I had been training for a master swim meet and running quite a bit when all of a sudden I could barely do a 1/10th of my workout,” she says. “I had so many random symptoms and I couldn’t make sense of it, but my biggest complaint was muscle fatigue. This prompted me to go to the doctor and after a series of tests I was diagnosed with Lyme disease.”

Coined as the “great imitator” as many of its symptoms resemble those of other conditions, many cases of Lyme disease often go unnoticed for years due to misdiagnosis. Though she doesn’t recall having a tick bite and never developed a “bulls eye rash”, two of the most cited associations with the disease, she is now able to recognize what may have been early signs of the condition. Not long after the birth of her son, Tyler (8), Christy began suffering from chest pain, trouble breathing, and tightness of the throat. Doctors initially believed she might be suffering from a pulmonary embolism, yet even when that was ruled out, no one could give her a proper diagnosis. Later her symptoms evolved to unexplained rashes on her elbows and under breasts (not generally typical of the disease), in addition to slight fevers and a loss of appetite. “Looking back, I do recall [those] random symptoms that sent me to specialist after specialist, but...Lyme was never tested for, nor was it ever suggested.”

Christy asserts that much of the problem with Lyme is that it is still widely misunderstood and underestimated. Each year over 300,000 new cases of the disease are reported, making it the “fastest growing vector borne infectious disease” in the country (lymestats.org). “That is not even a fraction of the actual cases,” she says. While Lyme is a clinical diagnosis based on a patient’s medical background, exposure to risk factors and symptoms, many doctors do not have an extensive background in the disease and therefore rarely consider it as an option. Worse still, many of the tests for Lyme render false negatives because “there may not have been time for antibodies to develop; the immune system may be suppressed; or the person may be infected with a strain the test doesn’t measure,” (lymedisease. org).

The lack of certainty regarding the disease leaves many people unaware and at risk. “There are so many people suffering and dying from undiagnosed Lyme disease and something has to be done about it! It’s an outrage,” she says. “If you ask most people what their understanding is regarding the disease most people could only tell you, ‘It’s from a tick.’” Studies have shown that horseflies, mosquitoes and even mice can also carry the Borrelia Burgdorferi bacteria, one of the many strains that causes Lyme. Additionally, the FDA currently does not have a test to screen for Lyme in blood donations and some research suggests that certain strains of the disease may also hold the possibility of being transmitted sexually.

Lyme can also be contracted from mother to child. “In some cases, the baby is born stillborn. [In] some cases the baby is positive for Lyme upon birth and has severe problems the rest of their life, [and in other] cases the baby is positive but doesn’t show any signs of Lyme and is therefore monitored closely,” Christy says. Since her diagnosis in October, Christy had both of her children tested for the disease, whereafter she received news no mother ever wants to hear. “My oldest, Taylor, (10), tested negative. My youngest, Tyler, tested positive which means I passed Lyme down to him in-utero. This means I have had the disease for over 9 years.” Nevertheless, Tyler is strong and continues to persevere, like his mother. He plays soccer and is currently in the second grade at Pleasant Grove Elementary, where he cites music as one of his favorite subjects. “[Tyler’s] school and teachers have really been wonderful and supportive.”

Christy, a former EMT, is currently taking time to focus on her health. “This diagnosis has changed my world as I knew it,” she says. “I barely have the energy to work out. This disease [tried to] rob me of most of my ambition in life, [but] right now I am taking time off of work to focus on my healing and to complete my real estate license online.” She currently takes three antibiotics and nearly twenty other supplements in an attempt to rebuild her immune system. “Most days I run a fever and my entire body hurts...people look at me from the outside and say, ‘You look fine,’” she says. “No, not really, [but] some days I feel ok.”

Lyme has various different strains and co-infections which can affect the entire body, including shutting down vital organs and penetrating the brain.

Strains range from relatively mild to those that can cause seizures as well as psychological complications. Treatment for the disease generally begins with a 21 day round of the antibiotic doxycycline. Currently, there is no cure for Lyme disease, and while it can go into remission, the condition can be triggered whereafter treatment will have to be administered all over again.

Because the CDC does not formally recognize Lyme as a chronic disease, insurance companies are not willing to pay for the necessary tests and

Since the CDC denies the existence of chronic Lyme, insurance companies are not required to cover costs related to the disease. Patients spend on average $53,000 per year out-of-pocket for tests, doctor visits, pharmaceuticals, and supplements. lymestats.org

This also leads to a significantly smaller pool of knowledgeable and reliable specialists, or Lyme Literate Medical Doctors (LLMDs) willing and available to meet the needs of desperate patients. Most doctors are out of network; therefore, those suffering with Lyme often have to find doctors through word of mouth or from support groups and online communities.

Christy currently travels to see two specialty Lyme doctors in Louisiana and Connecticut which she pays for out of pocket. With so little help and knowledge available, many newly diagnosed patients can feel defeated and overwhelmed. “You have to be your own advocate when you have Lyme.

It’s definitely a lonely disease.”

Nevertheless, Christy encourages those that suspect they may be suffering from the disease to fight and speak up on behalf of their own health. “Trust your gut. Don’t accept just any generic diagnosis. You have to request for it to be tested. Lyme is not curable, but it can be managed with probiotics, vitamins, and natural supplements,” she says. “There is hope.

Make sure you have a good doctor. Treat your symptoms and surround yourself with positive people, people that believe you, because there are skeptics.” Most of all, Christy insists that everyone should be realistic and mindful about taking precautions against contracting the disease. “Most doctors will tell you, “Lyme isn’t in Texas. Lyme isn’t in Arkansas. False!

Think about how often people are around woods and dogs.

[Different] trees are imported from different states [all] around your home.” She also cites the potential danger of those that could possibly contract Lyme while hiking in different states, as well as coming in contact with those travelling with animals across state lines.

All in all, Christy is claiming victory over the disease. “I feel better. I know I’m going to get better. I know Tyler is going to get better.” Like any good athlete, she’s dedicated to following through. She hopes to continue to encourage the public to remain vigilant and aware of the effects of the disease. “I don’t want it to be something people are afraid of, but for them to know the course of action. I’m an advocate. If I’m dealing with it and know other people are, I want to be a voice for Lyme. It may be from my sports background, but I’m driven to never give up. I’m not afraid to do this.”

Chloe’s Journey of Faith

When Chloe was first diagnosed last year in June it felt like a shockwave going through our lives! I think I wrote a Facebook post several months before about how much I admired people with disabled children and children with illnesses them, living at the hospital. I wrote and how hard it must be to care for that after we had visited Arkansas Children's Hospital in August of 2015 when we witnessed so many families coming and going there at the hospital. At that time we were thinking Chloe had something going on with her heart because of some abnormal tests. Little did we know that that was a marker for what was yet to come. Almost a year later she was diagnosed with terminal grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme.

at the time. We felt helpless, hopeless and truly scared that we were going to lose her. Thankfully the first surgery was a success and it bought her some time until they could diagnose it and schedule surgery to remove it.

After receiving the diagnosis of how aggressive it was, we once again felt helpless and hopeless. Chloe on the other hand took the news better than we did because I believe she was born with a sense of maturity and understanding from day one.

I remember the night she went in She asked to be anointed by my for emergency surgery and the risks father and she asked for prayer that were involved and the feeling of every time we went to church. She uncertainty seemed overwhelming began to pray even more fervently

and began to ask me to read scripture to her. Little did I know that this would literally build our foundation, strength and relationship with God and each other over the next year.

When it came time for her second surgery she knew that she would be okay going in. I think the only time she got worried was right after surgery when she went into PICU. She said she saw us and wanted to talk but couldn't. She thought at that time that she may never be able to talk again because she told me 2 weeks after that how scared she really was.

As she was sharing this with me she suddenly began to laugh and said, Yeah Mom!!! I was motioning that I needed a pillow for my head because it was hurting and you thought I meant my feet so you put a pillow under my feet!! Really Mom?!! I just had brain surgery and you gave me a pillow for my feet!!!� We had a good laugh!! As she healed from her partial resection we had to make a decision of where she would receive her treatment and which plan or trial would be the most aggressive. It was time to seek a treatment plan. Little did we know that within 5 weeks the remaining 20% of

the tumor they had to leave intact, due to its location, had quadrupled in size. Her plan started immediately and she had to have the highest dose of radiation that even an adult could have. We had to move to Houston and live for 2 months but Chloe made me drive home every Friday after her radiation so she could see the rest of the family even though it was only for one day.

As Chloe and I traveled every week she began to watch inspirational messages on YouTube and fell in love with Joel Osteen and his positive, uplifting ministry. I began to see a huge change from Chloe in the months to come.

Each time we would go to the hospital for appointments we would meet other children and families and some were so much younger than Chloe. All we could think of was how blessed we really were. It's hard to see the little ones crying because they don't understand and they just think the doctors are being mean. But it's also

hard to see the older kids who have been so involved in sports, school and extra curricular activities only to be stripped away from it all and especially missing their friends.

As we drove home last year before

special blanket that a lady, I believe from Illinois, sent her. It was warm and soft to touch and Chloe made the comment that it doesn't hurt her skin like some of the others do.

When they go through chemo and radiation their skin can get burned and it becomes very dry and sensitive to many materials.

So, we decided we would learn to make these blankets and start handing them out when we went back for her IV chemo treatments.

We had a young lady design a logo for us that stood for what Chloe's Journey of Faith represented. We embroiderd her logo and favorite scripture from Phillipians 4:13 on each blanket. It reads: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Since we decided to start making these Thanksgiving I could see Chloe's blankets Chloe's GT and National wheels turning! She said she wanted Honors Society teacher, Tiffani Neal to do something for the kids that are from LIberty Eylau ISD, contacted going through what she is mainly us and offered to help us by making to offer support but to give back as it an approved community service we have been so graciously given opportunity for the kids. We meet too. She always carries this one once a month at the school and tie

It takes about 5 yards of anti-pill fleece and costs about $2030 a blanket to make. We have had several people donate money and some donate fabric to aid us with these gifts of love and support!!!

She witnessed to them and has such compassion and love unrehearsed and totally impromptu. for others that even in her worst She is one brave little girl with a times she continuously counts her huge heart and we pray for complete blessings and wants to help others healing each and every day!!! she came across some Joel Osteen videos. She began listening to him every trip we would make to and from Houston. His messages became the cornerstone of her mind-set that she could and would beat this illness. His messages were always so encouraging and uplifting and they literally drove her to reading her bible and praying more fervently. She had mentioned one day that she would like to meet him because his messages had impacted her life with such a positive outcome. We had a ton of people try to make that happen in November last year but Chloe became ill from having her port surgery and she just never felt good enough to hang around Houston on the weekends. Oddly enough we had a friend that was attending Lakewood and told us Joel would be preaching both services on March 5th. That was the day before her 5th set of scans.

She got to meet him and Victoria in their private quarters along with the Washburne family from Dallas.

Heather Washburne annointed Chloe that day and mentioned that she almost forgot to grab her oil that morning as they headed to Houston, but something told her to get it. Little did she know that it was meant for her to meet Chloe.

My Mother was a college graduate and my Father did not complete the 7th grade, but they offered to me, my brother and my sister, many examples of making things a little better for us than what they had in life. Much of it was through a great work ethic, both at home and on the job and serving in the community. They supported their Church and participated with us in our school activities. They pushed us hard to get an education and gave up many personal things in order for that to occur.

With my “grands”, I have tried to follow my parents example.

Tell us about yourself.

I was born in Denham Springs, LA. on October 9, 1943 to Monroe Edison and Eris Kent Rutledge Milton. I graduated Salutatorian from Denham Springs High School in 1961.

I was a member of the Key Club, Beta Club, FFA, and served as Drum Major for our High School Band my Senior year. I attended a National Science Foundation summer semester at Louisiana State University (LSU) Baton Rouge, LA my Junior year in High School and served on the Yellow Jacket Annual Staff my Senior year. I also received the American Legion, Most Dependable, Most Intelligent, and Most Like to Succeed Awards my Senior year. I graduated from LSU in 1966 with a BS in Mathematics, and began my civilian career with the Department of the Army.

What does this nomination mean to you?

I certainly do not consider myself a hero.

I am sincerely humbled that my granddaughter “Boo Bear” would nominate me for this recognition, and that I would be 030 ALT Magazine | April 2017

Who is your hero?

My wife Brenda Lou Corley Milton is my hero. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary this August. Throughout all of these years I have travelled the world with my job, we have moved many times, and she without hesitation made a house a cherished home and alone raised our three children. She sacrificed significantly to overcome many things and has never ever complained about anything. She exhibits a patience, a humility, a caring selflessness, a supportive nature and an inner strength, despite several personal tragedies in her life. I am a much stronger and better person through her influence on me and so grateful that I can call her my “beloved”.

What do you think makes a person a “hero” to someone else?

Labeling a person a “hero” indicates that you recognize in them a skill, a trait or a personal quality that you yourself are striving to achieve. Several characteristics come to the forefront when describing a hero and I will list a few that I look for when describ-

ing my heroes. Responsibility, Conviction, Perseverance, Determination, Compassion, Courage, Intelligence, Sacrifice, Honesty, Humility, and a Willingness to help others.

Tell me how you plan to “pay it forward” to people in our community to make someone's life better.

As long as the Lord allows me to live , I will continue to volunteer and serve as I have in the past and hope to make things a little better for those who follow.

I had no idea that my Uncle Billy & Aunt Karen were nominating me for this hero contest. I am honored and I pray that by my life experiences, others will be helped in some way. Mainly, my focus in life is to direct people to God and to spread the message of love.

Who is your hero?

Tell us about yourself.

I was born to two wonderful parents, Frank Pryor Sr. and Paula Pryor Derr 40 years ago.

Recently I married Julie and along with her son, Eli and my son, Logan, we became a blended family full of love. We live in Atlanta, Texas where we have started remodeling our home. I am blessed to have a job that I love. I am CEO at Artistry Recordings and Studio Manager at Smart Productions.

Music has been very important to me and I have strived to bring to Texarkana the best of music talent. From being a band member, being a band manager and now to producing & recording bands. In October, after having headaches and issues with my speech, I was diagnosed with Astrocytoma Brain Tumor. I had surgery in December to remove as much of the tumor as they could. I just finished radiation and will soon begin Chemo.

What does this nomination mean to you?

As a newlywed, my wife Julie has inspired me to be the man she deserves. I must also mention my grandmother. She was the center of our family. I strive to be as strong and courageous as she was. I think to be a hero, you have to put others first. To be bold when needed, and to speak softly when that is what will carry your message. Each and every prayer warrior and everyone that did so much for me during this time in my life are all heroes in my eyes.

What do you think makes a person a “hero” to someone else?

The definition of a hero is a person who is admired for courage , outstanding achievements or noble qualities. I include my parents in this definition. They have always supported me in each and everything I wanted to try. I know I always have their love and support.

Tell me how you plan to “pay it forward” to people in our community to make someone's life better.

I want to pay forward all the love I have

been shown back to our community in the way of a benefit each October. I would like to have it like the benefit that was given to help me. Several local bands came and played and entertained. Donations were received and I can not thank this community enough. My goal is to have a benefit for a local person in need. That is my mission, second only to showing God’s love through me and showing love to everyone. Without God and his love, we are nothing.

Tell us about yourself.

I am 50 years old and I grew up in Hot Springs.

I graduated from Lakeside High School and then from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia with an Early Childhood degree in 1989 and have been teaching school ever since, with all but the current year in preschool-1st grade. I got “promoted” to 2nd grade this year. I’ve taught in 4 public school systems and at a preschool in California. I’ve been teaching in Hope for the past 14 years. My work history prior to teaching includes babysitting all through middle and high school, working at Magic Springs Theme park for 5 years in high school and college, as well as a hospital in Hot Springs. I’ve been a Sunday School teacher, a church choir member, an officer in the Junior Auxiliary of Hope, a PTO officer, and an adult education teacher for ESL. I have 4 children: 3 of my own from my first marriage, and an adult step son, Alex, from my current marriage. My own children are Trey, 23, Matthew, 18, and Molly Ann who is 17 and a senior at Hope High School. I’ve been married to my husband Greg for almost 7 years. Twelve years ago, he saw me somewhere and decided I was the one for him, so he asked a few people about me, contacted me, we chatted for a couple weeks by phone and online, then had our first date one night at Amigo Juan’s while my kids were at Awana’s. manager of KTSS TV, and recruited me to start hosting the daily talk show, KTSS Talks, 4 years ago when the regular host decided to go into business with his family. I was just suppose to just fill in for a couple of shows… but I’ve been there ever since! I LOVE LOVE LOVE doing the talk show. It has allowed me to meet so many amazing people! I’ve gotten to interview all but one of our Arkansas State Constitutional Officers, former and current US and State Congressmen, Senators and a FEMA Director, a Presidential candidate as well as state and local candidates, mayors, school superintendents, teachers and students, musical celebrities that come to town to do shows, and most importantly- so many wonderful community people who either run or work in nonprofit organizations, belong to civic groups, give their time to their churches, food pantries, libraries or disaster relief organizations, plan festivals and events, lead classes, seminars, or tours for the area colleges, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission or State and National Parks. Getting to help people share information about what they do, how they help others, or get the word out about their events and fundraisers means so much to me. I feel like I am helping them help people

What does this nomination mean to you?

I was taken by surprise when I read that I’d been nominated. I’ve never thought of myself as a “hero” before. I’m just me. I do what I do. I take care of people, whether it’s the students I love and teach, my own family, or helping in my community in anyway I can. I feel so honored that someone thought I was worthy of being recognized. I’ve never felt like anything I do is any more than anyone else would do. I was raised to believe that if something needs attention or taking care of, you just do it. You get it done.

Who is your hero?

Oh gosh… I’ve had a few, some public figures, some not. My first hero, from childhood, was Walt Disney. He is a true “rags to riches” story, starting from the bottom and building a dynasty of magic and fantasy because of his love for children and their happiness. I’m a Disney fanatic! Fred Rogers, from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, is another. His love for children and helping them is seen and felt in the legacy he left behind. People who survive cancer or other life threatening illnesses, especially those who fight it while raising children and holding a family together, are my heroes.

Single parents going to college to give their family a better future are my heroes. Policemen and firemen and emergency workers who risk their own lives to help other people are my heroes. People who work with and show love to abused children are definitely my heroes.

What do you think makes a person a “hero” to someone else?

I think anyone that inspires others to do better by their own example would be a hero. You don’t have to famous, or well known. There are so many hidden heroes. The people who work hard, strive to do good things, go above and beyond their normal capabilities to reach a goal and thus set an example for others are heroes. Someone who perseveres through adversities and comes out on top, showing those around that it can be done, even if there is no public recognition of the accomplishment…. that, to me, is a hero.

Tell me how you plan to “pay it forward” to people in our community to make someone's life better.

As a educator, I hope I am helping to make some child’s life better everyday. I’ve always felt that my most important job as a teacher is to let each of my students know that first and foremost, they are loved and they matter.

If they leave my class at the end of the year knowing that I will always be there for them, then I have fulfilled my duty to them as a person. I’ve strived to do this with my own children, and continue to try and instill those beliefs into new little lives that become my babies each new school year.

I plan to pay it forward by continuing with our goal to raise enough money to purchase an adoption trailer. It will be donated to the City of Texarkana, Arkansas and utilized by the Animal Care & Adoption Center, as well as police and fire when needed.

The adoption trailer will help transport and house shelter pets to community events, while also used as a stand-by for emergencies for displaced pets due to storms or other unfortunate events.

I don’t feel like a hero. Heroes are people that put their life on the line for us everyday and we don’t even know it, like our Texarkana Police Officers and Firemen. Not all heroes wear a uniform, receive awards, or post about what they did in social media. Heroes are people who do those small, special, but so important things for someone else without recognition.

Who is your hero?

The first person who always comes to mind is Cpl. Les Munn with TAPD. He embodies the word hero in so many ways to me, from his ervice as an officer, his community incolvment , and his dedication to family and friends.

My First Cruise to...Alaska

The anticipation leading up to my third cruise -- to Alaska -- nearly killed me. The day my travel documents arrived from Above & Beyond Travel and Royal Caribbean, I raced home, plopped down on my living room couch and read through them page by page. I immediately called our friends, Laird and Isa Markland, who were going with me and my hubby, Mike, to ask about shore excursions they would enjoy, dinner plans (of course) and then began researching our beautiful 49th state.

I could tell from the start, this would be very different from my other cruises, which included a short cruise to Mexico and a 9 day cruise up the California coast, ending in Vancouver.

(I will say that the California cruise is also a favorite of mine!).

This was actually Mike’s choice in cruises – I am definitely a warm climate person, affectionately known as a “beach bum.” So my main question was, what on earth should I pack for Alaska's northerly climate? I didn’t want to freeze the entire time we were there and really had no cold weather clothing.

So I was very pleasantly surprised by many things.

It's Not Always Cold!

Icebergs. Glaciers. Black bears. Brr, it's cold, right? Not always. According to my research, from June through August, average lows and highs in southern Alaska (where the ships are) range from the 40's into the 60's -- and that lows as cold as the 20's have been reported. So I duly purchased and packed sweaters, sweatshirts, socks 056 ALT Magazine | April 2017

and a jacket for the rainfall I was also promised I'd encounter.

And wouldn't you know I visited Alaska during a precipitation-free, heat wave! Temperatures ranged from around 45 at night to the upper 70s during the day. Other than one day when the wind blew at what I believe to be 50 miles per hour, we were good to go! After temperatures of 100 here when we left at the end of August, it was a welcome respite! After a few hours attempting to explore Ketchikan in a jacket, long-sleeved shirt and pants I felt as if I was about to pass out. The jacket became tied around my waist and the sleeves pushed up. It was delightful!

Admittedly this is uncommon, but it's still wise to be prepared for varying degrees of weather, as the climate can change rapidly and temperatures plummet in the evenings. Next time, I will pack for all seasons and maybe even see some of that rain – although I hope not! It was beautiful the entire time we were there.

The Perfect Family Vacation

I'd considered Alaska to be a bit of a "mature" destination (most of the people I knew personally who'd been there were grandparents and/or senior citizens), but the minute I boarded ship I realized I had it all wrong. There were lots of children onboard, mostly school-aged, and they all seemed to be having a grand old time. The biggest surprise was seeing so many multi-generational groups -- families, and older folks traveling with their children and grandchildren.

Alaska is a great choice for families who want to introduce their kids to

nature and science -- something other than the surf-and-sand experience.

And it certainly helps that Royal Caribbean (as well as other cruise ships) offer innovative and extensive children's programs and facilities to cater to the one million kids who hit the high seas each year.

Land of the Midnight Sun?

Not exactly, unless you are much further north in the state (Denali Park does see some post-midnight sunsets; in Barrow, the northernmost commu-

A word of caution, though: Sunrise is as early as sunset is late -- day broke as early as quarter to four in the morning on my cruise. If you have trouble sleeping when it's light outside, pack a sleep mask. Even blackout curtains on cruise ships can let in some light (unless, of course, you are in a pitch-black inside cabin). I love sleep and can do it anywhere, anytime, but I can certainly imagine the brightness being an annoyance to those less fortunate.

Wildlife? What Wildlife?

One of my favorite cruise jokes begins with a passenger asking the captain, "What side of the ship will the whales be on?" Yet as silly as that is, I, too, wished I could stand in some magical spot and see whales breeching, eagles soaring, etc. Unfortunately, nature is unpredictable, and in seven days I saw very little – a couple of whales, an eagle that was in captivity.

We all saw salmon that had finished spawning and were now dying. It was sad to see – but fascinating because there were thousands of them. Mike and Laird were lucky enough to see a brown bear while they were on an excursion fly fishing – which I am not sure I would want to encounter out in the open! We also saw several whales jumping at the side of the ship one evening during dinner. If you are interested in seeing wildlife, the best option is to book an excursion specifically for that purpose. Still, the regions regularly visited by mainstream cruise ships see sunsets much later into evening than most folks are used to. In Juneau, for example, the sun generally sets after 10 p.m. It was weird to stroll out on deck after a late-seating dinner, completely stuffed, while it was still light outside!

On most big ships, there are essentially two Alaska cruise itineraries -- the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska -- and both offer opportunities to view glaciers up close, with sail-bys to Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm or College Fjord.

Whichever you choose, the scenery is breathtaking. Towering mountains capped with ice and snow set the stage for blue glacial ice and the occasional family of seals (if, of course, you are lucky enough to catch them).

That said, this is one voyage for which you may want to consider splurging on a balcony cabin; although you can always find a spot along the ship's rail for viewing, and many ships line deck chairs with cozy blankets and offer hot cocoa on deck, it's an unbelievable treat to sit on your verandah for a private showing. Sitting on the balcony, with your hot chocolate, coffee, or in the evenings, as glass of wine, and enjoying the majesty of the Alaskan scenery, is something you will never forget. It will be one of the most memorable parts of the trip, and truly justifies the upgrade from an inside or oceanview cabin.

Excursions Make the Trip

Although this was Mike’s choice, I fell in love with Alaska. We are planning on taking another cruise, just like this one, hopefully in 2018. I cannot wait and will be planning far in advance again.

However, some things you just can't experience without ditching the crowded streets for an organized tour. Mike absolutely loved his fly fishing excursion, although Laird, having had a recent knee surgery, wasn’t quite as happy upon return. Although both loved the fishing, the walk to the area just about did a job on Laird’s knee. So make sure you look at the excursions and choose one that goes together with your abilities – like walking!

Isa and I had chosen a tour that included flying in a float plane to a luncheon that included fresh salmon. Unfortunately, the winds that day (you remember, they were 50 mph) wouldn’t allow us to take off. The guys had flown out early in the morning when the winds weren’t quite as bad. We were disappointed, but then chose an option to fly in a helicopter to Hubbard Glacier. It was amazing to stand on ice that had been in existence for thousands of years. I will never forget it.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Changes Well, as some of you know, I had my second heart attack in 7 years and am now the proud owner of two stents. I thought I would throw out there the changes that have affected me.

I don’t have high blood pressure or cholesterol so no meds for that stuff. I am taking Plavix and that is enough,. I forgot about the side effects. It makes you feel tired a lot and gives you a slightly upset stomach. But the one side effect that really bugs me more than any is the one that is like third from the end of possible side effects and for me it changes the way food and drinks taste. For example, it makes sweet tea taste like blah and a steak tastes like, well, not steak. I also need to eat something when I get up or I have an upset feeling in my stomach for the rest of the day.

How does it affect my fishing? Well, it doesn’t other than having to carry some extra peanut butter crackers to keep my stomach settled. I can say it has made no real difference in my stamina during practice or tournament day. I can keep up with the younger guys just fine and can outlast most of them, right up until I get off the water - then I crash like a rock, but I am not sure that comes from age and not the meds.

So, don’t let a heart attack keep you from doing what you like and if you have any tips on helping me get my taste for food back, let me know.
