The wolf is back! Around 10.000 wolves are currently living in the European Union´s landscapes, this number showing an upward trend. Extinct or close to extinction in large areas of Europe since the 19th century, strictly protected under national, European (Habitats Directive) and international law (The Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora CITES and Bern Convention), and currently making such a successful comeback, that a simple “Welcome, wolf!” is no longer an adequate reaction to this development.
