SUMMARY

The 2021 Myanmar Coup d’Etat began on the morning of 1 February 2021, occured in the aftermath of the general election on 8 November 2020, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) party won by a landslide (396 out of 476 seats). Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of pro-democracy civilian, currently is under house arrest and has been charged with possessing illegally walkietalkies.

Myanmar has toggled between military and civilian leadership since 1948. Suu Kyi spent nearly 15 years in detention by the ruling Military Junta as a result of organizing rallies calling for democratic reform. Therefore the military and its official arm immediately claimed the election were fraudulent as to demand a rerun of the election. However, Suu Kyi’s leadership wasn’t all bad for the military, most notably she backed the Tatmadaw’s 2017 campaign that indicates of genocidal intent of Rohingya. GLOSSARY

Military Junta (Junta militer)

Meaning: A military group that rules a country after taking power by force.

Ex: the military junta killed roughly 30,000 people within one to two years.

Coup d'Etat (Kudeta)

Ex: On April 2017, a right-wing coup d’état plot was foiled in Austria. As a result, the leader, Monika Unger, and her subordinates were arrested after they tried to organize an armyled coup.

Meaning: An order of a criminal court, whether pre-trial or following sentencing after conviction of a crime, restricting a criminal defendant to his or her residence and a prohibition on leaving the residence except under certain conditions and at specified hours, if any.
