Artist Statement

작가노트

이동엽 메를로-퐁티(M. Merleau Ponty)는 인간의 몸을 통해 세계를 바라보는 통찰을 제시 한다, 그에 의하면 세계는 인간의 몸을 중심으로 유기적으로 하나가 되어 서로 정보 를 주고 받는 또 하나의 거대한 몸과도 같다는 것이다. 다시 인간의 몸을 또 하나의 세계라고 생각하면 이 미세한 세계에 의해 가늘고 작게 구조화 된 세포형태들은 다양하게 변형될 수 있는 아주 복잡한 유기체라고 할 수 있 다는 것이다. 즉, 몸은 미세한 세포들의 모든 가능성들이 현실화되는 장소가 되고, 그 럼으로써 인간은 복잡한 세계 속에 존재할 수 있는 것이다. 복잡한 생물학적 유기체로서 수 많은 세포로 구성되어 있는 인간의 몸은 생물학적, 화학적으로 각 세포들과 조직들간에 서로 영향을 미치고 상호작용을 하면서 특정한 관계를 이루고 있는 물질적 요소들을 구조화 시킨다. 그럼으로써 단지 유기체로 한정 되는 것이 아니라 물리적인 속성을 갖는 물질적 흐름들, 요소들로 일정한 배치를 이 루고 있는 사회, 정치, 경제, 철학, 예술적 구조들 모두를 포함하게 된다. 나는 작품에서 인체를 생물학적 관점에서 세분화하여 접근해 보고, 좀 더 유기체적 이미지로 표현하여 인체의 세포, 혈관, 기관, 골격 등이 서로 어울리거나 변형하여 또 다른 유기체를 구성하는 과정을 표현하고 있다. 회화 작품에서 보여지는 형상은 거 리를 두고 보면 인체의 모습을 가지고 있으나 돌연변이거나 변종, 상식적으로 존재 불가능하고 그 기능을 상실한 유기체의 모습을 가지고 있다. 비정형적 표현은 대상 을 사실적으로 재현하고 있느냐의 문제보다는 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것, 대상성 과 비대상성, 내면과 외면, 의식과 무의식, 현실과 비현실, 이성과 감성을 자유로이 형상화 하는 데에 초점을 두고 있다. 이 드로잉은 의식적, 무의식적 행위로 그려진 수많은 선과 면이 결합되는 과정에서 내면의 심리적 억압을 복합적인 감정으로 표현하기 위한 방식으로 작용한다. 완전 한 형상이 분해되고 해체되는 과정에서 그 속이 모두 비춰지고 그 위에 또다시 공간 을 만들어 가며 불완전한 분열을 통해 보는 이로 하여금 보다 유동적인 시선으로 유 도한다. 최근에는 의식의 흐름에 따라 변화하는 유기체의 변화 과정을 형상화 하기 위해 직 접적이고 구체적으로 형상을 드러내기 보다는 간접적, 비정형적으로 표현하고 있다. 유기체는 살아있는 형태이며, 또 고정되어 있지 않으며 끊임없이 변화하고, 이러한 유기체의 공간적 외관은 그것의 다양한 유기체들간의 상호 작용의 결과물임을 제시 하고 있다.

Dongyeop LEE M. Merleau Ponty presented an insight into the world through the human organism, which suggests that the world can be seen as another enormous body organically united around the human organism centrally. Again, considering the human organism as another world, in which it can be seen as a complex organism that can be transformed into various forms of thin and small structured cells by this microscopic world. In other words, the human organism becomes a place where all the possibilities of microscopic cells become reality, thereby human can exist in a complex world. As a complex biological organism, the human organism, which is composed of numerous cells, biologically and chemically interacts with each other between cells and tissues to structure the material elements that form a certain relationship. Thus, it includes not only an organism, but also flows of material and elements with physical attributes in which socially, politically, economically, philosophically, and artistically structures that are constantly arranged in elements. Through my works, I express detailed perspectives of human form biological point of view. I present the process of how organisms are formed with cell, blood, organ and bone. Looking my works from the distance, a viewer will see a human body or mutated figure of organism. Also, the process of how organs and other parts are functioning in organism is vivid in my works. The atypical expression focuses on the representation of visible and invisible, objecthood and non-objecthood, inner and outer, consciousness and unconsciousness, reality and unreality, rationality and sensitivity rather than whether or not to represent the reality of the object. This drawing method is used to express the complex feeling by internal psychological repression occurs in the process of combining many lines and surfaces drawn consciously and unconsciously. In the process of decomposing and dismantling the complete figure, all of the inner side is reflected, and making space again on top of it in inducing the viewers to look more flexibly through incomplete division. In order to visualize the process of the micro-world in organism changing accordingly with a stream of consciousness, recently I express the shape indirectly and atypical rather than directly and concretely. Through this process, I try to narrate that the organism is a living figure rather than a stable one and it always keeps on changing itself in order to interact within itself.

젊은 작가 이동엽의 작품을 대할 때는 예술에 대한 거리감이 크게 느껴지지 않는다.

과거나 현재의 수많은 예술가들이 각기 다루는 범주나 방식은 달랐으나 인체와 몸에

대단히 숭고해야 하거나 역사성을 지녀야 한다는 전통적인 태도보다는 작은 세계에

대한 관심은 미술의 역사가 증명해왔다. 유기적 구성체인 몸이라는 물질세계는 복잡

서도 충분히 예술의 가치를 발견할 수 있다는 믿음을 시사한다. 많은 미술가들이 회

할수록 더 깊이 빠져들게 하는 요인이 분명 있다. 그렇다면 그에게 있어서 몸이란 어
