A year on two wheels Whether learning to jump higher on local trails or stopping to let moose cross the road on Norwegian highways, Jenny Graham's year has been full of curiosity and exploration. For the world record endurance cyclist, it’s been less about how far and more about the journey.

Right from the start of the year, my focus was firmly on my Evol mountain bike, with heaps of time spent on local trails, sessioning features and learning to jump with more confidence, and, eventually, more height. It felt good to slow things down and focus on skills rather than distance, and that confidence carried over into some brilliant trips further afield.

It’s a place I know well, but it never loses its magic. Rugged and wild, with trails that aren’t always rideable and views you can hardly believe to be true.

There’s a gorgeous little bothy not far from the river you have to cross to continue through the area, and that crossing can be anything from ankle-deep to armpit-high depending on the day.

The standout was an Easter bikepacking trip into Fisherfield on the west coast of Scotland.

This time, things were kind.

stayed dry under tyre. We rode from Ullapool towards Torridon at an unhurried pace, carrying far too much food, just the right amount of gin, and soaking up the familiarity of a place that feels like an old friend.

Gravel riding offered something completely different. My faithful Camino gravel bike took me exploring in a quieter, more reflective way, following old rights of way and chasing stories from the past.

One of my favourite rides was a coast-to-coast across Scotland in the footsteps of the legendary John the Post.

Norway this year, spending much of the summer in coastal villages northwest of Trondheim. It’s a special place, with plenty of similarities to the Scottish Highlands, big skies, quiet roads, and a sense of space

through glens and along lochs, scrambling over crags and finding lodgings as he went, carrying news from east to west and back again. I had a much easier time of it, riding trails that Highlanders had bedded in over hundreds of years, many now conveniently tarred. The Camino was built for this kind of riding: never quite knowing what’s coming next, but trusting the bike to deal with it. Riding those old lines through the landscape gave real perspective, imagining the effort and determination it once took to move through these places.

Then there was my Colibri road bike. I took it out to

that encourages you to slow down. Some of the most memorable moments weren’t the rides in motion, but the pauses: stopping to watch moose and reindeer grazing calmly at the side of the road.

Being on a bike lets you get closer, move more quietly, and feel part of the landscape rather than just passing through it.

Back home, the familiar pull of the Bealach na Bà rounded off the year as I hosted my first cycling event, The Bà, with a closed road over one of Scotland’s most special passes. It’s a reminder of just how powerful shared challenges can be.

And what’s next?

After a year rooted in exploration and spending lots of time riding at home in Scotland, I’ve teamed up with fellow Scot and endurance rider Mark Beaumont, alongside Yorkshire riders Martin Mansell and Hamish Graham, for a proper European epic. We’ll be riding from the very north of Norway to the south of Spain — a 4,000-mile journey the length of Europe. It’ll be punchy, fast, and I genuinely can’t wait to shake things up.

ICELAND: Into the light Having bikepacked from London to Australia, Sam Murray needed a new adventure to bring him out of the dark place he’d fallen into since his return. Undeterred by headwinds and winter weather, Sam found new light amidst the alpine tundra of Iceland.

If you’d have told me two years ago I’d be cycling around the world, I’d have laughed you out of the room. I’d not ridden a bike in my adult life and, to be honest, didn’t know whether I still could. So, what did I do?

I bought a bike, strapped some bags to it, and cycled 16,500km from London to Brisbane, Australia.

But getting home from Australia, I’d fallen back into bad habits.

After three months of barely touching my bike, I decided I needed to get back out. I was in a dark place and needed to find some light. Iceland had long been on my bucket list 28

and what better way to explore the alpine tundra than by riding a bike in early winter?

Not so Easy I flew into Iceland on a blue sky day, ready to assemble my bike and cycle 60km into Reykjavic, Reykjavik. Slight issue: EasyJet sent my bike to Italy instead of Iceland! Whilst waiting two days for my bike to arrive, I spoke to a few locals about what I was planning: a 1,300km loop around Iceland’s Ring Road.

Every time their face would drop.

Their warnings of extreme weather in the north played on my already anxious mind.

Into the wind After finally collecting and assembling my beautiful Camino at the airport, I headed off into the vast landscapes of Iceland.

From day one I noticed what was going to be the bane of

Sam’s Iceland highlights Náttúra yurtel: the owners kindly made a bucket list item for me come true, I stayed in a yurt in Iceland with a view of the geyser.

Ballerina biscuits. My go-to snack of the trip, it’s like a bourbon with more icing.

They saved me a few times on those long stretches!

This made layering a headache, if I stripped down too much the winds would cut through, and if I put on all my layers I’d get sweaty and end up cold when the sun went down. It took a few days to figure it out.

Northern beauty Iceland has to be the most beautiful country I have ever been to. I found myself constantly in awe at the landscapes. Every bend, hill, mountain pass or tunnel brought a new breathtaking scene: snowy mountains, huge waterfalls, glaciers,

volcanic ash beaches and roads that made you feel like you were cycling across a different planet.

The beauty in the north of Iceland in really stood out for me, the roads were quieter and felt safer away from the busy south.

Beaming The main reason I wanted to visit Iceland was the northern lights.

I had been to Norway a few years ago and seen a faint glimpse of them so I was on the hunt in Iceland to experience a strong aurora. Luckily for me, I was treated to some awesome nights.

One evening I was heading up a mountain climb in the dark when a huge burst of green and white light exploded in the sky above me. It was so powerful it seemed like these powerful white beams from the aurora were making their way all the way from the heavens to the road in front of me. It lasted perhaps 45 seconds, but it’s a moment I will remember forever. I’m a bit of a grumpy git but you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face that night, I was beaming.

I’d started in a dark place, but this Iceland trip brought me into the light and reminded me what I could do.

Cardinal spins

Tenby, finish point for west-south-west

From his home in the Peak District, Mark Wedgwood drew along the compass points to Britain’s wildest edges and rode every one.

His 4,174 mile ride is a celebration of the curiosity that sparks adventure.

Living in the heart of the country, I’m lucky to call the Peak District home. From my front door in Hathersage, a day’s ride can carry me 100 miles to the Lincolnshire coast for fish and chips. My longer adventures, though, have usually begun much further afield.

if I simply kept going from my front door?

At the start of the summer I was ready for a big new cycling adventure, but I also needed to spend regular time at home.

What would happen, I wonder,

With sixteen rides to do, I introduced an element of surprise by making a rotating cardboard arrow to determine which direction came next.

With home as the hub of a giant compass, I plotted sixteen routes between opposing coastal extremities, and set out to ride them in the truest lines possible, skirting traffic, seeking the best cycling.

North-north-west via Mallerstang

Mark’s highlights: ● Skipton through Upper Wharfedale to Hawes in Wensleydale, then Kirkby Stephen and Appleby, tracking the North Pennines west side to Brampton. Magnificent. ● Settle northwest via Ingleton and Kingsdale to Dentdale, through Sedbergh skirting the Howgills, along Lune Gorge to Shap, then the Lowther valley via Pooley Bridge to Penruddock.

Awe-inspiring. ● Late afternoon ferry across the Firth of Clyde to Dunoon, then loch-side riding to Inverary on Loch Fyne at sunset. Sublime.

Mark and his Colibri reach Ilfracombe

My first spin was a logistical challenge as it required me to cross the Bristol Channel.

A two-day 210 mile ride took me to Porthcawl in South Wales.

From there I boarded the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer to Ilfracombe in North Devon and made my way across the West Country to Lizard Point.

On route I stopped at Ironbridge Gorge to spend the day with my wife, Jenni. She was recovering from an operation so wasn’t cycling with me this year but we could still adventure together. We came up with the idea of meeting up somewhere roughly a day’s ride away from home. Over the summer we explored Durham, Bridlington, Lincoln, London, Shrewsbury, Chester, the Isle of Man, Belfast and Skipton. It was a master stroke and added a whole new dimension to the rides. Thanks to these breaks we got to know interesting new places together and learned much about towns

and cities we’ve previously missed. And the next day, I would get back on my bike and ride on.

If the purpose of this adventure was to see many sides of this beautiful and diverse country, then it delivered in spades.

My journey finished in early November at Huisnis, a beautiful, golden, windswept beach on the west coast of Harris in the Outer Hebrides.

I had no other reason to be here, especially in these short, out of season days, when few people were around and most places were closed for the winter.

My journey rewarded my curiosity every day as it led me to some exceptional places across the UK. Wherever you live, I challenge you to work out your own individual compass. Who knows what you’ll find riding out from your own front door.

And that is the magic of these adventures - doggedly following a self-invented purpose led me to explore further.

Inverness: A round of highland grit exploring Glen Nessie.

Setting off from Alpkit Inverness, you’ll head for the Great Glen Way through the hidden gem of the Abriachan area to Drumnadrochit. Pop into the Abriachan Eco cafe for coffee and cake and try your bike skills on the obstacles in the Abriachan trails next to the Abriachan native wood (a great spot for a family day out). As you head back, you’ll find some lovely viewpoints of Inverness, making a perfect spot to capture one of many strava photos on route. Visit the Uilebheist Distillery and cafe for a dram or coffee near the end of the trail. Finishing at Alpkit Inverness, and Red Point cafe in the Ledge Climbing Wall for a spot of in-store browsing with a brew.

Edinburgh: Setting off from Alpkit Edinburgh, you’ll be heading for Pencaitland (aka Head of the Woodland) to explore one of the oldest inhabited places in East Lothian.

Here, Saltoun Forest awaits, a place where wizards once met the devil, so don’t hang around for too long. The route then takes you on a cultural loop of the neighbouring area, taking in Winton Estate and Fa’side Castle, finishing off at Arthur’s Seat for those compulsory bike photos!

Metrocentre: A ride of two halves with a little bit of everything thrown in. Setting off from Alpkit Metrocentre, you’ll head towards the Pennines along Derwent walk.

You’ll pass by Derwent Resevoir and onto some primo gravel in Slaley Forest, taking you through to Blanchland for your first fuel spot of the day. You’ll find some great pubs and café’s here. Take a moment to dip your feet in the river before climbing up Edmondbuyers Common to Waskerley Way, which is part of the off road C2C route (another one to add to the bucket list). Not far after you’ll find yourself at Nana B’s café, before descending back down into town to finish back off at Alpkit Metrocentre. There’s a rich mining history in these parts of the North East so keep an eye out on route for contemporary art pieces paying homage to the industrial age.

Keswick: Venture into the remote Northern Fells

Hathersage: Enjoy the Peak District’s hills, trails and gritstone edges that surround the Hope Valley. Setting off from Alpkit Hathersage, you’ll hit some iconic peaks and climbs, including Shatton Moor, Mam Tor and Stanage Pole. There’s plenty of Café’s along the way, From Coleman’s Deli next door to get you started to Penny Pot Café for that well deserved tea and cake. If you fancy a swim, take a quick plunge in Redmires reservoir before heading back to the shop.

Betws-y-Coed: Discover one of the unsung treasures

around Skiddaw. After a gentle start from Alpkit Keswick along the old railway to Threlkeld, you’ll head up the Glenderaterra Beck right into the heart of the fells. Stop for some refreshment in Hesket Newmarket before continuing on lovely back roads with views over the Solway Firth and distant Scottish mountains. The route finishes with some gnarly ‘Lake District gravel’ and a steep descent into town where you’ll find some hearty pub grub to finish off a great day out in the hills.

Ambleside: Find faraway nearby along the lakes lanes and lonnins. Setting off from Alpkit Ambleside, you’ll head out towards Rydal water, where you’ll find your first swim spot of the day (that’s right, it’s not just a two-wheel adventure). Not long after you’ll find yourself on some gorgeous primo gravel in the Langdale valley, making the perfect spot for some photos of your much-loved steed.

Take a quick pit stop at Elterwater for coffee and cake to set you up for your first big climb up towards Grizedale Forest. Sweep through the trees and crunch along the fire roads to bring you back down to Windemere to bag your second swim of the ride. Further down the trail you’ll see Wray Castle, where you can find Joey’s café. It’s a slight detour off route but worth it for the cake! Weave down the last few sections of gravel and you’re back in Ambleside, finishing off the day with some hearty food in town!

Ilkley: Setting off from Alpkit Ilkley you’ll be crossing the

four moorlands which surround Wharfedale: Denton Moor, Pockstones Moor, Barden Moor and Ilkley Moor. From the highest points you’ll enjoy views out to the peaks of the Yorkshire Dales. Once in the valley will enjoy the quiet lanes, fast-rolling gravel and beautiful vistas of the River Wharfe, which you will cross four times. A word of warning, this is Yorkshire and there’s a couple of steep climbs!

Bristol: A round exploring local grit, forest trails and

forgotten ways that surround and neighbour Bristol.

Setting off from Alpkit Bristol, you’ll head out across the Clifton Suspension bridge into Ashton Court Park, look left for panoramic views over Bristol and Dundry Hill.

After dropping into the Land Yeo Valley, you’ll then head up Wild Country lane and up a sharp climb onto the top of Bourton Combe where you’ll find some old ruins and more great views. You’ll follow old Roman roads through the King’s Wood before a view of the broad flank of Beacon Batch, tallest point in the Mendips, before descending into Wrington. The latter half is a spin through the North Somerset levels, keep an eye out for Tyntesfield and Barrow Court nestled among the trees on opposite sides of the valley before the climb back into Ashton Court.
