Epic Rides 2025 - Sonder Book

RIDES EPIC

There’s a moment

on every ride when something shifts.

It might be quiet — that second when the traffic fades and your breathing takes over. Or loud — the whoop that escapes on a perfect descent, the grin you can’t wipe off after a sketchy section finally goes clean. It’s the small victories. The shared suffering. The silent miles. The stories you bring home.

We call them Sonder Moments — and they’re what this book is all about.

Epic Rides 2025 is a celebration of the rides that matter. Not the fastest or the fanciest — but the ones that stay with you. A weekend escape with friends. A solo spin that turned into a reset. The trip you’ll talk about for years. These are the stories that shape how we ride, and why we ride. And every one of them is made possible by a bike.

The best part of any epic ride?

Is that it always starts with just getting out the door.

See you on the trail.

Meet the family

From rowdy to roady and everything in-between. Each Sonder is uniquely its own entity, capable of writing a thousand different stories and each one is true.

Racing on his own terms:

Harvey’s Privateer Season with the Sonder Evol

2024 was my first season racing for Sonder bikes, and it was a game changer. Having their support throughout the season has been incredible and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to ride their bikes. ˛Sonder Evol was a perfect fit for my riding style from the get-go, and I’ve really enjoyed pushing myself and the bike to its limits racing around the UK and in Europe this year.

2024 Review

One of the biggest milestones for me this year was clinching the overall win in the British National Enduro Series in the Senior category. It felt amazing to see all the hard work and consistency pay off across the rounds. On top of that, I secured five National podium finishes, including two wins, which I’m incredibly proud of.

A standout moment was my first win of the season, at the second national round at Whiterocks in the Dyfi Valley. I pushed myself to the limit, resulting in a crash on the second stage, but managed to keep focussed and come back for a convincing win taking four out of the five stages. To do this at such a tricky, technical venue made for one of my most memorable results of the year.

The Isle of Man round was another highlight racing over four days and taking 8 out of 10 stage wins. It was a real test of endurance and skill, but the result was a huge confidence boost.

I also had a strong finish at the British Championships, where I placed 5th overall, sharing the podium with some top British World Cup riders.

That result earned me the vital UCI points to race the national Pro World Cup round in Loudenvielle. Even though the race didn’t go perfectly, being there and racing alongside the pros was a massive learning experience. The lessons from that event will be key as I push forward into 2025.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The 2025 season is shaping up to be a big one. As I move into the Pro category for my first full season in World Cups, my main focus will be racing as many rounds as possible and building from my 2024 world cup result. I’m aiming to gain as much experience as I can and push myself against the best riders in the world. Alongside the World Cups, I’ll also be taking part in any British Championship rounds I can around the World Cups, to stay competitive at home and defend my 2024 title.

I’ve been working hard through the off-season to make sure I’m in top physical shape. A huge part of that prep has been getting my Sonder Evol dialled in for next season. I’ve got a solid setup, and with the support of Sonder, I know I’ve got the right tools to take on whatever 2025 throws at me.

Ultra-capable 29” hardtail trail bike FALCO

Falco brings 29er speed, alloy resilience, and sweet spot geometry tuned for UK’s natural trails and trail centres. Confident, precise, and lively without being twitchy, it’s a serious trail bike that meets you where you’re at — and won’t hold you back.

“Falco is playful, confident, and capable enough to keep up as you grow. It’s a true mountain bike for people who take their trail time seriously, and want a ride that keeps up. It doesn’t shout — it just works, ride after ride”

Falco didn’t flinch once — berms, roots, roll-ins — handled the red loop at Coed y Brenin like it’d been riding without me. I came back grinning, arms buzzing, already planning the next trail. Legs sore in new ways. Mind clear in the same old ones.

Details

• For trail centres, local loops and natural trails

• 120mm front suspension

• 29” wheels with clearanec for up to 2.4” tyres

• Double butted 6061 frame

The search for the perfect trail is easier with the perfect bike. From the Med to the Mountains:

A

Smile, a Bike, and 1,020 Kilometres of the inaugural Alps

Divide

1,020 kilometres of rugged terrain winding through the majestic Western Alps. That’s the Alps Divide, a self-supported bikepacking odyssey with a staggering 32,000 metres of ascent.

From the sun-drenched coast of Menton to the serene shores of Lake Geneva, the Alps Divide promised challenge, beauty, and pure adventure. As someone who deeply loves the French Alps, I was beyond excited to have secured a place in the first edition of this unique event. First-time races carry a special kind of thrill—the unknowns, the excitement, and of course, the big question: gravel bike or mountain bike?

My choice was the Sonder Broken Road Titanium, a rugged, burly-tired machine standing out amongst a sea of sleek gravel bikes. My training had shifted since the arrival of my amazing daughter Billie—shorter rides, less time in the saddle—so my approach was to embrace the adventure with a smile and leave the race face behind.

I rolled into Menton the day before the start, the Mediterranean sparkling beside the town’s colorful buildings. The usual pre-ride rituals unfolded: a quick shakedown ride, last-minute tweaks, and packing dance. At the start, close to a hundred riders gathered under the sun, a buzz of excitement and nerves filling the salty sea air.

At 4pm, a police escort guided us out of town before releasing us onto our first steep climb. The Alps welcomed us with open arms—and burning legs. The descent that followed was rough, fast, and exhilarating. Already I felt confident in my bike choice, passing several riders fixing early punctures.

In Sospel, a place I recognized from a past enduro race, I stocked up at a local shop and crossed briefly into Italy. The night brought steep climbs and rough tracks, and by midnight I found myself imagining the views I couldn’t see. Ten hours in, just 100km done. At 2am, I stumbled across a bar in Pigna still open—water, chocolate, and ice cream heaven! I grabbed some shelter under a village marquee as rain started to fall.

The storm worsened. Thunder echoed as I waited out the downpour in a restaurant. With waterproofs on, I headed towards the Old Salt Road—a route meant to be spectacular, but treacherous in the storm. Spotting lights ahead, I reached Refuge Don Barbera where several riders were hunkered down. Warm food, shelter, and stories by the log burner lifted spirits as some considered scratching already.

Checkpoint one required a loop to the Col de la Bonette, the highest paved road in Europe. The weather cleared just in time for sweeping panoramic views and a sunlit snack—flattened croissant, naturally. The descent was thrilling until I hit a boulder square-on, tearing my tire. A quick repair with plugs (and my Alps Divide Opinel knife) and I was rolling again, smiling all the way to the checkpoint.

Day three, halfway at 478km. That night we bivvied at a McDonald’s patio, thanks to some smooth talking in broken French. The next day blurred by until a sunset hike-a-bike over Col de Ayesn and a soaking descent into Briançon, where I joined others hiding out in hotels from the rain.

The following morning began with a mellow ride to Bardonecchia, the start of another major climb—Col Sommeiller, nearly 3,000m high. A rider I’d been leapfrogging, Matt, and I tackled it together through all seasons in one climb. At the top, the views were hidden by clouds and biting wind. The descent was wild, and I accidentally followed the original route— reopened just in time—back to Bardonecchia.

Pushing on, we faced another brutal climb into a storm. As the wind howled and sleet fell, the hike-a-bike to Col de la Roue was intense. My experience helped me stay calm as I navigated rubble-strewn paths in the dark, finally finding safety at an open gîte, shivering and smiling at the madness.

The next morning we aimed for checkpoint two. Rubber gloves, hand warmers, and endless alpine climbs filled the day. At 1am, we arrived at Refuge de la Coire in a blizzard, cold but happy. With only 250km to go, I was fully in love with the journey.

The sun rose on a winter wonderland. Road diversions helped make up time, then we rejoined the Tour de Mont Blanc route, weaving through hikers. A steep descent into Les Houches cooked my rear brake, forcing a trailside fix—removing the caliper to keep rolling.

Day eight. The final stretch. After a near wipeout with a fading front brake, I rolled into Châtel and climbed past bike park shredders up to the final big ascent. Fuelled by crepes, we were rewarded with a fiery sunset over the mountains. Geneva lights sparkled in the distance.

Thonon-les-Bains came into view. One last forest trail led us to the lakefront where cheers rang out. Nico and Billie were waiting, and I crossed the line with a grin, brevet card stamped, adventure complete.

Only 32 riders finished. I was proud to be one of them. Now, five days to rest—then it’s on to the Lakes Divide. A new journey, with the same spirit: smiles for miles. A smile

When we’re not riding, we’re thinking about riding. We obsess over details, geometry, feel, function - anything to make the ride better. And we imagine you do too. That’s why we launched our Custom Titanium Frame service.

We build Ti frames for obsessives like us, obsessives who know exactly what they want building. If it’s bike shaped, we’ll build it.

Award-winning designer Neil Sutton will work with you from concept to creation. From jump bikes and hardtails to tourers and racers, match your bike with your unique riding style.

Something that can seem like a pipedream is actually closer than you think.

Why ti?

Rides great. Smooth and zingy like steel but at a fraction of the weight.

It’s tough. Titanium is hard and takes knocks and bumps brilliantly.

Lasts a lifetime. No rust or corrosion means you can ride year-round in all weathers.

Easy to recycle. Most of the energy making a Ti frame is used in refining the ore. So recycling is not just easy, it’s worthwhile.

Self cleaning. Honestly! When sunlight hits wet Ti, water can get between dust and oil so they float and flow apart.

Say goodbye to ongoing tuning and tinkering with high or low limits, B-tension, or a bent derailleur hanger. With internal gearing, negligible drag and being much more durable, the Pinion gearbox just makes sense.

Imagine unrivalled ride dynamics, from fast shifting through the grip shifter and equal jumps between gears with a super wide gear ratio. Being able to change gear when stationary is particularly useful when fully loaded or for quick getaways!

Golden Eagles and Glenfinnan tea stops:

The Art of Getting Lost (and Found)

Jenny Graham heads west to stitch together bogs, boujee basecamps, and breathtaking backroads. From hike-a-bike epics to sunset ales, this is adventure with just the right splash of comfort.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure this route goes.” A bold claim, equal parts optimism and intrigue. When it comes to my route choices, “goes” often means squinting at a map, imagining the space that hasn’t yet been filled in. Stitching together forgotten tracks and unseen paths to undoubtedly uncovering a hidden gem. A romantic notion until you’re bogtrotting up a hillside, bikes on backs, cheering whenever a deer-trodden trail reappears, only for it to vanish moments later.

My pal Pen was new to gravel riding, and I worried our heather-hauling antics might put her off. But as we clambered through the hillside, chatting about the magnetic pull of the untrodden, I saw the same spark in her eyes. Topping out onto freshly laid logging tracks, feeling smug that despite the hour-long hike-a-bike, it sort of ‘went’—if you squinted.

This spirit of exploration brought us west to Lochaber for three days of “boujee gravel riding,” anchored by a stay at ROAM WEST, just south of Fort William. It was the perfect late-October basecamp: rain hammering the windows, a roaring fire in the bar, and a drying room saving our sodden gear—proof we’d nailed the balance between wild adventure and just enough comfort. The first two days mixed meandering gravel trails with hike-abike detours around Ben Nevis and Ballachulish, but the third day was all about the ride: 100km of pure pedaling goodness.

We kicked off with a short CalMac ferry ride from Corran to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, a crossing that drovers herding cattle centuries ago would’ve faced with far less ease. For us, it was five breezy minutes, with a challenge to ride until the last ferry home framing the day.

The first 20km sped by on a quiet main road to Strontian, where traces of an old parallel road hinted at past travelers. The real magic began with the climb to Polloch. Steep and steady, the 6km ascent delivered breathtaking views: shifting clouds dramatised glens, and the peak of Beinn Resipol towering through. Topping out at 350m, we plunged down the twisting road through woods draped in moss, bursting with the rich, layered hues of autumn. Glimpses of Loch Doilet glittering far below, until we rolled into Polloch, a charming hamlet of old forestry houses.

Then came the ride’s crown jewel: a traverse along Loch Shiel. The gravel trail wound endlessly, hugging the contours of the loch’s banks. Flanked by towering cliffs whose raw faces contrasted with the calm waters below. We paused to watch a golden eagle soaring above—less impressed by us than we were by it. We didn’t see another soul until we reached Glenfinnan., where the solitude gave way to tourist buzz. The car park was alive with visitors snapping photos of the famous Harry Potter bridge, the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Among the chaos, we found a reward for our efforts: free hot drinks for those arriving by bike or foot. Yes, please!

A brief stint on a busier road gave way to quieter lanes along the side of Loch Eil where a flock of gulls kept pace with us. We imagined it was Fridaynight excitement for kebabs in Fort William.

The final stretch dazzled us with a pink sunset over Ben Nevis, a perfect backdrop to the last flat miles toward the ferry port. Just as fairy lights twinkled in the distance, we came across the Ardgour Ales pop-up bar and brewery. Friday night pizzas around a campfire with locals? Absolutely! We ate, sipped local beer, and soaked in the laughter and warmth before catching the last ferry home. The perfect ending to three days of west coast adventures.

British Enduro Champion, mullet connoisseur and trail whisperer, Harvey is a true go-getter and trail shredder. You’ll usually find him out training on the local, racking up the laps at the Wrekin, or pushing the Evol to its limits on the British Enduro Series.

Starting off in Cross Country, Harvey has found a ‘home’ in Enduro, and has carved his way to the top, securing the overall win at the British National Enduro Series two years on the bounce. We can’t wait to see what the next season holds.

Alastair Humphreys

Alastair’s a British adventurer, author and blogger. He spent over 4 years cycling round the world, a journey of 46,000 miles through 60 countries and 5 continents. Alastair doesn’t shy away from adventure; as well as his adventures on two-wheels, he’s also walked across Southern India, rowed the Atlantic Ocean, and trekked 1,000 miles across the empty Quarter desert to name a few. More recently, Alaistair pioneers adventures close to home and the concept of ‘microadventures’. It’s no wonder he was voted one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year.

Emma Pooley

Holding 10 Olympic and Commonwealth medals, Emma is one of GB’s most respected and successful cyclists.

Now riding purely for fun and always up for a personal challenge, you can find Emma tackling ultra-distance bikepacking events or developing tasty oat recipes.

Neil Cottam

Mechanical engineer, mountain biker, outdoorist, campervanner and restorer of retro bicycles.

In recent seasons Neil’s focus has been directed towards Enduro Racing, mainly in Wales and Scotland, with a couple of epics in Madeira and New Zealand, trying to improve on his solid mid-pack mediocrity.

Neil’s also spending considerable time (and money) at UK bike parks in a vain effort to improve his jumping technique.

Pete McNeil

Mountain Bike guide, adventurer, endurance racer, expedition leader and dad, Pete has worked as a guide in the UK, Spain, Nepal and New Zealand.

Since being inspired to get out on his own adventures at the age of 12, he has embarked on countless ambitious personal challenges and expeditions, including both the HT550 and Silk Road Mountain Race... Not forgetting a two year cycling honeymoon riding from the UK to New Zealand!

Pete now lives with his family in the Scottish Highlands.

Travis Bramley

Travis Bramley is a gravel and road rider from Plymouth who represented GB in the first two Elite UCI Gravel World Championships. Currently working as Exeter City Football Club’s sustainability officer, while studying for his MSc in Global Sustainability Solutions at the University of Exeter, sustainability is at the core of Travis’ values.

Loyal to his West Country roots, Travis is organising over a dozen grassroots cycling events in Devon this year and is heavily involved in the local cycling community to get more people on bikes to Go Nice Places & Do Good Things!

Saorise Pottie

Continental crosser, wildlife lover and gravel bike whisperer, Saoirse is an Irish lass that loves to explore new trails in new places. If she’s not out riding a gravel track somewhere in the UK, then she’s probably riding a different track somewhere else in the world.

Her most recent ventures saw her ride across Africa covering over 7000km, and now she’s exploring what gravel South America has to offer.

Stu Taylor

Seasoned self-supported endurance rider on the bikepacking circuit, Stu’s completed most of the epic gruelling events such as the Silk Road and Atlas Mountain races, the Highland Trail, French and Italy Divide to name a few, and last summer completed the Alps Divide.

Locally and socially Stu can be found roaming the local fells for a cheeky night under the stars, hike-a-biking and running in the mountains chasing that amazing sunset.

Endurance road bike COLIBRI

Colibri is light, fast, and made for the long haul. Designed for endurance road rides, it’s a bike that eats miles and loves a challenge. From TCR-style epics to solo coastlines and fast commutes, it’s smooth, efficient, and tough. It might be featherweight, but it’s no fragile thing. Built for speed. Born for the road.

“Colibri is light, yes — but it’s also grounded. It’s the bike you take when you want to go long, when the tarmac stretches out and you want to see what’s beyond the horizon. It’s built to keep you flying.”

An ode to the Colibri from Grace‘The thing about the Colibri is it’s always ready. There’s no faffing about tightening various screws or wondering what that rattle is–the Colibri is raring to go. Owning a bike as reliable and as capable as this is truly a pleasure. I don’t need to consider whether she can handle the rough roads of the Peak District–she can–or whether I’ll get a personal record up that climb–I probably will. The Colibri is everything you want in a bike.’

Pop into the Abriachan Eco cafe for coffee and cake and try your bike skills on the obstacles in the Abriachan trails next to the Abriachan native wood (a great spot for a family day out). As you head back, you’ll find some lovely viewpoints of Inverness, making a perfect spot to capture one of many strava photos on route. Visit the  Uilebheist Distillery and cafe for a dram or coffee near the end of the trail. Finishing at Alpkit Inverness, and Red Point cafe in the Ledge Climbing Wall for a spot of in-store browsing with a brew.

Edinburgh: Setting off from Alpkit Edinburgh, you’ll be heading for Pencaitland (aka Head of the Woodland) to explore one of the oldest inhabited places in East Lothian. Here, Saltoun Forest awaits, a place where wizards once met the devil, so don’t hang around for too long. The route then takes you on a cultural loop of the neighbouring area, taking in Winton Estate and Fa’side Castle, finishing off at Arthur’s Seat for those compulsory bike photos!

Metrocentre: A ride of two halves with a little bit of everything thrown in. Setting off from Alpkit Metrocentre, you’ll head towards the Pennines along Derwent walk. You’ll pass by Derwent Resevoir and onto some primo gravel in Slaley Forest, taking you through to Blanchland for your first fuel spot of the day. You’ll find some great pubs and café’s here. Take a moment to dip your feet in the river before climbing up Edmondbuyers Common to Waskerley Way, which is part of the off road C2C route (another one to add to the bucket list). Not far after you’ll find yourself at Nana B’s café, before descending back down into town to finish back off at Alpkit Metrocentre. There’s a rich mining history in these parts of the North East so keep an eye out on route for contemporary art pieces paying homage to the industrial age.

If you fancy a swim, take a quick plunge in Redmires reservoir before heading back to the shop.

Ambleside: Find faraway nearby along the lakes lanes and lonnins. Setting off from Alpkit Ambleside, you’ll head out towards Rydal water, where you’ll find your first swim spot of the day (that’s right, it’s not just a two-wheel adventure). Not long after you’ll find yourself on some gorgeous primo gravel in the Langdale valley, making the perfect spot for some photos of your much-loved steed. Take a quick pit stop at Elterwater for coffee and cake to set you up for your first big climb up towards Grizedale Forest. Sweep through the trees and crunch along the fire roads to bring you back down to Windemere to bag your second swim of the ride. Further down the trail you’ll see Wray Castle, where you can find Joey’s café. It’s a slight detour off route but worth it for the cake! Weave down the last few sections of gravel and you’re back in Ambleside, finishing off the day with some hearty food in town!

Ilkley: Setting off from Alpkit Ilkley you’ll be crossing the four moorlands which surround Wharfedale: Denton Moor, Pockstones Moor, Barden Moor and Ilkley Moor.
