WHY FUME EXTRACTION MATTERS As of December 2026, Australian Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) will be replaced by Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) which requires workplaces to ensure that no person is exposed to a substance or mixture above the workplace exposure limit. Dust particles, chemicals, and pathogens are harmful pollutants that welders are routinely exposed to that carry a risk of possible negative health effects. That’s why we cannot take for granted the air we breathe and the filtration systems we depend upon. By acknowledging the importance of clean air in worker health, safety, productivity, and sustainability, we begin to understand how important our investments and maintenance in industrial systems are to fabrication businesses.

WIRE CONSUMABLES NEW REQUIREMENTS IN AUSTRALIA With Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) continuing to tighten for metals commonly present in welding fume - including a 10-fold reduction for Manganese - effective fume extraction and filtration are becoming increasingly critical to maintaining a safer, cleaner workshop environment. The latest AS/NZS standards for welding fume extraction systems provide workplaces with greater confidence when selecting equipment, establishing requirements for systems to demonstrate their ability to effectively capture welding fume and achieve filtration efficiency of ≥99%. When selecting a welding fume extraction solution, look for equipment that complies with the AS/NZS ISO 21904 Series. This provides assurance that the system has been designed and tested against recognised requirements for effective welding fume capture and filtration. Choose proven extraction technology. Choose AS/NZS ISO 21904 Series compliance. An AS/NZS ISO 21904 Series rated system must demonstrate: • ≥99% filtration efficiency for welding fume (W3) • Verified performance of the entire device, not just the filter media • Airflow monitoring with warnings and alarms • Safe filter handling and dust management • Minimum capture velocities and validated torch/hood performance.

PIPE GEAR

Welders contend with extreme heat, splatter and intense ultraviolet light during the welding process, and their occupational accidents range from electric shocks, burns, dangerous fume inhalation and radiation exposure. In the realm of PPE, the focus is typically on protective clothing, such as welding jackets, safety glasses, heat resistant gloves, welding hoods and helmets. However, the entire welding system must also be contained within a protective structure. For this reason, it’s important to know what welding tents are, their purpose, their advantages, and why you need a Betaweld Welding Tent. Welding tents provide a barrier against tough weather conditions such as wind, rain and direct sunlight that can interfere with welds and put the welder at risk. While the primary purpose of welding tents is protective, they also enable welding to continue in harsh weather conditions, which in turn allows welders to continue work for longer without interruptions and with a high degree of safety.
