District Meet ings are inspiring occasions. Th e National Council is glad to a n nounce that this fa ll we shall be able to have the gatherings w h ich were postponed last year.

Let u s take advan tag e of this ti me w hen we ca n think together about the progress of Alpha Sigma Tau. We h ave had small , not outstanding , s uccesses. Let us have the patience to work s teadily on throu g h diffi cult s ituations, believi n g as friends across the coun try in the "p ermanence of our idea ls."

Bv MRs . Jo sEP H STEEN It is with much pleasure a nd a keen sense of anticipa tion tha t the Alph a Sigma T a us of the Second Di stri ct a re making pl a ns for a District C onference to be held in Buffalo, N . Y., on O ctober 27, at the new Student Union of the Buffalo Sta te T eachers College.

This is the first District M eeting since the very successfu l Pittsburgh Conclave of 1945.

Council and Staff Officers feel th a t it is imp orta nt tha t these m eeting be resumed this year. H owever, du e to the troubled world situ a tion we wi ll necessa ri ly be governed by certain restriction s. In spite of the'se we anticipate a 195 1 Di tr.ict Conference tha t will a bound in stimul a ting inter-ch a pter contacts a nd progressive accomplishment. From past experi ence with A:ST na tiona l gatherings, we a re as ured th a t a warm glow of sorority fri endship, quick enthusiasm, and bright gaiety will ch aracterize our mee ting.

It is in D ecember, 1951, also, that we look forwa rd to the affiliation of Alph a Sigma

Tau into full membershi p with the ational Pa nhell enic Conference. Becau e of ou r fond hope of a progre ive futu re in PC, the th eme for our meeting is " Expa n ion for Alph a Sigma T a u. " A variety of timula ting a lumn ae, coll egia te, a nd national di cu ion topics led by capable delega te will enl a rge upon this central theme.

Wilma W. Sharp, national president of Alpha Sigma Alpha, has been a wise and gracious leader of this fine sorority for several years. At the Chicago Panhellenic meeting of N .P.C. where the vote was taken to join the A.A.C. many leaders spoke with admiration of the following article which she wrote.

Most fraternity women have been very busy with many things, as have most all American women. By our actions we have declared, misquoting Ecclesiastes, " There is time for every purpose under heaven." Since World War II, we have been bogged down in our diverse efforts, our manifold interests and many small plea ures. Apathetically unaware we said, " I would love to be more friendly" . . . " I would like to brush up on American History" . . . " I need to do some serious study" .. . " I should find out if what they say about subversive influences is true" ... "but I have no time."

We have borne our burden of business in a Stoic manner doing nothing to free ourselves of it. Then suddenly we half-opened our eyes a nd ears to ugly reality. Presently a lert to imminent dangers within our country and throughout the world, we will take time for what time is- a God-sent gift. No long r

will we have a part in creating in America an indefensible shortage of a precious resourcethe power of the feminine mind and spirit and influence. We will now authoritatively say to ourselves and to others in the words of an old English prayer-"T ake time to think, it is the source of power."

Of necessity or by choice, we are till occupied with many thing . But back of our crowded activities there can be orderly thinking which will give us a clear ense of values, a love of wisdom, a philosophy for living. All fraternity women may well remember that "kn ow l e d ge increaseth strength." It is easy in ready words to affirm loyalty to our American way of life. It is wise to fortify proud affirma tion with a knowledge of the history, the institutions, the Documents of Freedom tha t have made our country great. Are we forcibly articulate about our American heritage? Do we urely know and ardently believe in our riuht as Americans? Or do we in confusion, doubt those rights when they are attacked and maliciously misinterpreted by our foe ? Can we recognize our enemie and m a tch their clever m anipulations? Put on the clef n ive for tha t which we hold dear do we ha e the judument to know " hen to keep silen e and when to peak ?

ternity and the ever-widening boundaries for the application of it principles. In mutual reverence, we can experience the inspiration and mea ning of the fraternity Ritual and its eternal Truths. Together as groups of American women wherein cooperation and understanding are strong realitie , we can discuss "the American spirit-the American idea."

For these ends, we will take time carefully and thoughtfully as our own. We will take it with respect and compelling gratitude. There will be no complaining about lack of time for our days and our hours will be worthy of themselves and equal to the urgency and crises of our time. Ea<;h individual fraternity member can be armed against communism and subversive influ ences because through serious, consciou practice, she will have learned and can say to other :

From the physical bodies of American women come the sons and daughters who give their lives in wars in defense of the Right and our country ,and the Safety of the world. From the minds and hearts of American women must come the intellectual enlightenment and effective devotion to true ideals that will help hasten the end of wars and lead finally to "an organized common peace" throughout the world. Pray God that we may realize the power of an aroused American womanhood and accept the responsibilities of it. For most of us, the base of operations will be the same famili ar places where we live and work and serve- but our vigorous effort must be upon a few things that point the way to the ultimate goal.

The present college year is significantly "a time to keep" not "a tim e to cast away" within our college and alumnae fraternity chapters. There, in the security of fri endship, we can review the ba sic values of fra -

The four men's and women's social and professional fraternity conferences will hold their 195 1 annual meetings in the vicinity of Williamsburg, Va ., during the last week in November, and on Saturday, December 1, will join in ceremonies a t Williamsburg in observance of the 175th anniversary of the founding of Phi Beta Kappa, oldest college fraternity, established at the College of William and M ary on D ecember 5, 1776.

At this time, Alpha Sigma Tau's 4-year associate membership term in PC will be completed. R epresentatives from Alpha Sigma Tau will be Mrs. H. E. Staehle, Mrs.

Parry Schippers, Mrs. S. Carl Robin on, the NPC delegate, Editor, and National President, respectively.

The ceremonies at Williamsburg, Saturday afternoon will consist of an historical pageant and three talks appropriate to the occa ion.

The principal event of the four-conference program will be a formal ba nquet at Hotel Chamberlain on Saturday evening, with addresses by speaker of na tiona! prominence.

The ceremonies at Williamsburg and the banquet Saturday evening will be under the ponsorship and management of the Interfraternity R e earch and Advisory Council.
