S I HAVE BEEN READING the materials coming across my desk about the Ignatian Year, I have been struck by

the concept’s simplicity, its challenge, and its timeliness. The Ignatian

While all of us, in theory, can stop at any time for an Ignatian pause, Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, is using the occasion of the anniversary of Ignatius’s cannonball moment to encourage us to use the tools of Ignatian spirituality to “see all things new in Christ.” He reminds us that Ignatius’s conversion took time and prayer: It is good to remind ourselves that the wound Ignatius suffered in Pamplona was not so much a happy ending, but rather a happy beginning. Conversion consists sometimes of great moments of change, but it is also a never-ending process. We need to put Christ in the center every time, again and again….We wish to discover a new apostolic enthusiasm inside ourselves, a new life, new ways to follow the Lord. That is why we have chosen as our theme for the year: to see all things new in Christ.

The generosity, breadth of vision, competence and good humor of these and other Jesuits were great examples for me. And it was while I was in the Jesuits that I began working in the St. Louis African American community, the location of most of my work through my career.

MG: During those days, I used to go to Mass on campus with the scholastics at 5:15 in the afternoon. It was an important time for me to put things together as everything around me was changing— friends and family, education, and vocation, even the country. I was very much attracted to teaching and so I became interested in preparing myself to work with young people. That drew me into the Society. I saw that these Jesuit friends were preparing to be teachers and change agents and it made a lot of sense to me that, as companions, it would be more enjoyable to be doing it together. The Society offered a

Tackling the big issues, like war and peace, income inequality and poverty, the reform of our legal system and educational opportunity are so difficult and demanding. What we need is an army of women and men to tackle them. Educators shape the army that works for Justice and healing or the army that resists.

I look back on my education in Catholic schools, and especially at SLU, as preparing us for continuing that struggle, and the Society’s mission as uniquely set up to prepare young people for engaging the “big issues.”

Surely our experience as student board members and chairs of the chapter presidents’ committee is unique as nearly half of our term has been spent during the global pandemic.

While one might think this was a cause for consternation and disappointment, in fact, our experience was quite the opposite.

Recognizing the mental health challenges of the pandemic, the chapter held a series that included “Psychology 101.” Two professors shared their studies for the “Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of the Spanish Population.” “Introduction to Global Governance” defined what global governance is and how it affects us and the world. “Regionalism in Central America” described how natural disasters, transnational crime, climate change, and migration are supra-state challenges by definition, making Central America a paradigmatic region and “Diplomacy in the EU” explored the EU, its history, and functioning. “As Jesuit-educated people, we need to be sensitive to what is happening in the world and and respond with compassion,” explains chapter president Maria Gallego-Gongora (Loyola Andalucía ’18). “It is important to discern what we feel called to do in our professional and personal lives. We proposed programs oriented toward identifying our vocation.

INNOVATION THE FAIRFIELD CHAPTER took part in Fairfield University’s 21- Day Racial Equity Challenge. This challenge raised awareness surrounding inequalities many African Americans faced in the past and those they continue to face today. On each of the 21 days, members were provided with resources that focused on a different topic surrounding racial injustice and racial equity. The chapter used its Instagram page to promote the daily topics and encourage members to engage with the materials as well as to promote the discussion held on Zoom. "The 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge was a great experience for our members,” said chapter president Danielle Witty (Fairfield ’19). “I really enjoyed participating in this challenge and received positive feedback from our members as well. The Ignatian Solidarity Network provided us with great resources, and we were able to have a very meaningful discussion surrounding racial injustice and racial equity. Racism impacts us every day and it is so important to discuss and reflect upon this topic."

Never would we have thought that this would be how our last year of A∑N board service would go, but, in the end, we are grateful and humble. The A∑N chapters across the globe have demonstrated great resiliency, dedication, and how to be men and women for and with others. They showed that pursuing the Magis is possible, not just when all conditions are exactly as we imagined and hoped, but in incredibly challenging and undesirable circumstances as well.

Our chapters leaders and members never gave up and came up with innovative ideas to keep Alpha Sigma Nu alive on campus.

The Fordham chapter took their annual chapter-alumni networking event virtual, offering participation in two separate networking sessions to all student members. AJCU career services professionals Jim Dickinson (Loyola Maryland), Rose Nakamoto (Santa Clara), and Branden Grimmett (Loyola Marymount) discussed the “Jesuit Skill Set” all Jesuit grads share as well as tips on networking with alumni.

In the spring, the Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara chapters held a similar event with a west coast focus. The Fordham chapter also participated in the Fall Executive Leadership Series where A∑N seniors joined the president's council for a virtual night of indepth discussions.

The Georgetown chapter held a virtual meet and greet with DC alumni to network and get to know each other. In addition, the chapter held two LinkedIn workshops featured Diane Boettcher (Marquette ’88), a tech professional, giving tutorials on how to set up an attractive LinkedIn page and reach out to potential employers.

The Georgetown chapter’s Alumni Career Workshops featured a panel of A∑N alumni working in a certain career sector, answering questions from A∑N members on their career paths and the impact of A∑N membership. The chapter created the Alumni Mentorship Program to match DC A∑N alumni with current Georgetown A∑N students for mentorship and career advice.

My love of learning and belief in the power of education kept me in higher education. My personal experience as a recipient of scholarship support led me to a path in philanthropy as a fundraiser. As I bring scholarship dollars to campus, strengthen college based programing, and provide access to underrepresented students (and faculty), I match generous donors with need for a true impact. When I reflect on my path and my life today, I am grateful for, and sometimes in awe of, the journey. I also remember moments where I was torn, facing a fork in the road. The tools I learned at LMU and Fordham I have used at those moments.
