F ROM T HE P RESID EN T When I was initiated into Alpha Sigma Alpha as a new member, I could not have imagined that one day I would have the privilege of serving as national president. The lessons I began learning in those earliest days about leadership, service and what it means to give freely of yourself have never left me. And yet, I could not have known then just how much I would continue to lean on them, all these years later.

My path to national service was not a straight line.

From my early days as a region volunteer and chapter advisor, to national vice president, each role shaped me.

I was fortunate along the way to be mentored by strong, caring and compassionate advisors who modeled what lifetime membership truly looks like. They showed me that this sisterhood is not something you age out of - it is something you grow into. I hope I have done the same for someone along the way.

These four years have been unlike any other chapter in our near 125-year history. We navigated changes in higher education enrollment, evolving legislation affecting private membership organizations and a national conversation about the future of women's organizations; all at a pace that challenged us to think more boldly than ever before. I am proud of what we accomplished together: safeguard policies that put member wellbeing first, meaningful membership growth during one of the most difficult periods the fraternal community has ever faced and legislation within the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) that fundamentally changed the way NPC supports College Panhellenic Communities. That is Alpha Sigma Alpha leaving a mark for every woman who comes after us.

Throughout it all, I found myself returning again and again to our closed motto. Board service requires significant commitment, and there were many moments when those words were not just inspiring - they were necessary.

One of the greatest gifts of this role has been the conversations with members at every stage of their journey, carrying their voices into national council discussions and strategy. A national organization that truly engages its members is a stronger organization.

None of this would have been possible without my family. My husband, my kids and my mom gave up family time, trips and countless evenings so that I could serve. There are no adequate words to thank them; only this: your sacrifice meant everything, and I will never take a single moment of it for granted.

To the members who offered counsel, my Panhellenic sisters who were generous sounding boards and my fellow national presidents who became dear friends, thank you. You made this journey richer than I ever expected.

Alpha Sigma Alpha has shaped who I am in ways I am still discovering. It has been the honor to serve as national president. Alpha Sigma Alphas are bright and brilliant and your best days are still ahead.

As all sorority women know the school year can get busy and overwhelming at times balancing school, sorority and other time commitments. I also love celebrating the little wins, whether it’s a compliment, showing up to their events or just spending quality time together. FROM THE EDITOR Dear Sisters, Summertime often brings a welcome change of pace, offering us time to slow down. As we look toward the future, this season carries much significance for our sisterhood - a summer focused on our sisters' well-being and the exciting countdown to a historic milestone.

In the pages of this issue, we are reminded of the importance of rejuvenation and taking the time to care for ourselves and recharge our spirits. Within Alpha Sigma Alpha, being a sister means providing a support system where we can offer comfort during challenging times and remind one another that no one has to navigate their journey alone. Cultivating well-being is much like cultivating friendships; it requires presence, connection and reflection.

As we prioritize personal health, we also begin a celebratory countdown to 125 years of Alpha Sigma Alpha. This upcoming anniversary is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sisterhood. For more than a century, shared values have strengthened the bonds between us, creating a legacy of support that spans generations.

UPCOMING EVENTS Alpha Sigma Alpha will host Officer Academy Jan. 15-17, 2027, in Indianapolis at the Renaissance Indianapolis North. Officer Academy is Alpha Sigma Alpha’s training conference that provides selected collegiate chapter officers with the skills they need to fulfill their specific leadership roles. In 2027, collegiate chapters will send newly elected vice presidents of recruitment, and communications directors or public relations directors elected in the fall of 2026 to the event.

Registration for the event will open in the fall of 2026.

Alpha Sigma Alpha provides emerging collegiate leaders with the opportunity to enhance essential leadership skills at the Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institute (LDI).

Weekend-long events will be held in the following cities: • Kansas City, MO: June 25-27, 2027 • Pittsburgh, PA: July 9-11, 2027 Details can be found on AlphaSigmaAlpha.org as they become available.

Northeastern State University Alpha Sigma Alpha is thrilled to announce the return to Northeastern State University, OK, this coming fall to reopen the Beta Gamma Chapter.

This is a meaningful moment for all of us and we are excited to rebuild a vibrant sisterhood on campus.

Written by: The National Ritual Coaching Team: Allison Behrens, ΘZ, Kathy Post Lopez, ΔΣ, and Sharon Sterner Paris, ΓI From the quiet glow of candlelight ceremonies to the familiar words “Aspire, Seek, Attain,” ritual services are central to the Alpha Sigma Alpha experience. These meaningful traditions foster reflection, unity and belonging, connecting members across chapters and generations.

Each ritual service reinforces the purpose of fostering close friendships and developing women who are known for their character and concern for others. For both collegiate and alumnae members, the Ritual serves as a reminder that Alpha Sigma Alpha is more than an organization, it is a lifelong sisterhood grounded in shared values and ideals.

Whether experienced for the first time or revisited years later, ritual services provide a sense of continuity that transcends time. It creates a shared understanding and common experience, allowing members from different chapters to connect through the same traditions. Through ritual, Alpha Sigma Alpha’s core values of generosity, integrity, learning and enjoyment are reinforced, guiding members throughout their collegiate years and beyond.

Due to their importance, ritual services must be approached with preparation, respect and dignity. Careful preparation and adherence to ritual expectations preserve the integrity of the experience and honor the generations of members who have participated before. For AΣA members, our Ritual is more than tradition; it is the foundation of lifelong sisterhood and a reflection of the values that continue to guide members long after their collegiate years.

We can continue to build meaningful connections within our Sorority through several services included in The Ritual of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The Service for Founders’ Day honors our founders and shows the role we play throughout the different stages of membership. Alumnae are invited to participate in-person or virtually in the service hosted by national council members and national volunteers.

The Fifty-Year Recognition Service underscores our lifetime commitment to Alpha Sigma Alpha. Honorees are reminded of the strong bonds of sisterhood that have been formed and at the same time challenging them to continue building meaningful connections with future generations of sisters.

The Memorial Service pays tribute to sisters who have passed. It is an opportunity for members to gather and reflect on the bonds of sisterhood that have endured over time.

Alumnae initiation, through the Sanctuary Degree Service for Alumnae Initiates, allows members to invite women who exemplify the core values of Alpha Sigma Alpha and who have not joined a National Panhellenic Conference organization. Alumnae initiates can experience the benefits

of Alpha Sigma Alpha membership from friendships and support to personal and professional growth.

The Crown Degree Service is a particularly meaningful ceremony. It is a degree of honor awarded to an individual who has had a significant impact on the Sorority through their service and dedication. We can all think of one person, an advisor, house parent, mother, whose help and guidance has made an enduring difference.

The importance of ritual lies in a value-based experience.

In the fast-paced landscape of our communities, member experiences that develop character, social relationships, service to others, integrity and accountability elevate the importance of ritual. Since its founding, AΣA has sought to inspire its members to attain a meaningful, ethical and fulfilling life by integrating values into the membership experience.

Integrating ritual in daily chapter operations and member experiences elevates Alpha Sigma Alpha as an organization of integrity and value. The Ritual highlights the commitments to our organization, our sisters and the communities where we live, work and celebrate. The Ritual provides clarity on what is essential to make informed and connected decisions that allow our sisterhood to grow and flourish.

The positive collective impact of our sisterhood bond, shared beliefs and decisions is why Alpha Sigma Alpha continues to inspire, elevate and influence one another and the lives around us. We become a better version of ourselves, living authentically and demonstrating moral character and leadership. Whether you are a new initiate, a collegiate member or an alumna, you represent Alpha Sigma Alpha everywhere, every day. Living the ritual is more than a tradition that holds a special place in your heart. Lived authentically, it is a devotion to live your life with consistent, purposeful action.

Living the ritual daily, as our Founders’ intended, means observing the values and commitments to your personal wellbeing, relationships, studies, career, creative outlets and community. Celebrating 125 Years of AΣA Since 1901, the Alpha Sigma Alpha sisterhood has been a home for lifelong friendships, a place where strong character is cultivated and a foundation for leaders to thrive. Join us as we celebrate 125 years of sisterhood and our commitment to elevating the influence of women in the world.

Founders' Day 2026 As stated in the original charter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, ‘the purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among members and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mold such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.’

This Founders’ Day, as we celebrate 125 years of Alpha Sigma Alpha, we invite all collegiate and alumnae chapters to live up to this purpose in their Founders’ Day celebration.

Celebrations should be planned by all chapters nationwide on or near Nov. 15, 2026. Collegiate and alumnae chapters are welcome to celebrate together with current members, local alumnae and chapter alumnae.

Phoenix of Alpha Sigma Alpha

When I joined the Zeta Psi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha at Loras College in 2010, I had no idea how deeply the experience would shape my life. I came to college not knowing anyone, which felt both exciting and intimidating. Within the first couple weeks of classes, two women on my floor invited me to attend recruitment with them.

That simple invitation changed everything. More than a decade later, those women are still two of my closest friends and even stood beside me as bridesmaids in my wedding.

Alpha Sigma Alpha gave me so much more than friendships. It gave me confidence, leadership opportunities and a true sense of belonging. During college, I served in several leadership roles, eventually becoming chapter president. After graduation, I stayed involved by volunteering at both the chapter and district levels. Some of my favorite memories from college involve time spent with my AΣA sisters, and I feel incredibly grateful that I have continued building memories and relationships through the Sorority long after graduation.

Today, I am a licensed clinical social worker working as a clinical therapist in private practice.

My path into mental health was not completely linear, but it was always rooted in my desire to help people. From a young age, I loved volunteering and serving others in my community. When I first entered college, I planned to study music education. Eventually,

I realized that path was not the right fit for me, so I changed my major to psychology and music with plans to pursue music therapy.

After graduating from Loras College, I began working at a residential facility for youth released from juvenile detention. That experience solidified my passion for working in mental health and helping vulnerable populations. A supervisor encouraged me to pursue my Master of Social Work, and I eventually worked in both community mental health and the justice system. In 2019, I transitioned into private practice, where I continue to work today with adolescents, adults and seniors. I specialize in working with individuals with anxiety disorders, ADHD and autism spectrum disorder. I also serve as a clinical supervisor for provisionally licensed clinicians working toward full licensure.

One of the things I value most about my work is increasing accessibility to mental health care. I work for a practice that accepts Medicaid, which is incredibly important to me. In many communities, access to quality mental health services can be limited, especially for individuals and families with financial barriers. Our practice is one of the few private practices in the area that accepts Medicaid, and I am proud to help provide care for members of my community who may otherwise struggle to access treatment.

Looking back, I can clearly see how Alpha Sigma Alpha

helped prepare me for my career and the person I have become.

The leadership opportunities I had within the Sorority taught me confidence, communication and teamwork. The relationships I built provided support and encouragement that continue to impact my life today. The values of Alpha Sigma Alpha continue to guide me personally and professionally every day.

Balance is one of the values I work hardest to maintain. As a therapist, I believe it is important to practice the same self-care I encourage for my clients. Outside of my clinical work, I work parttime at Pure Barre, sing in a community choir and spend time with my husband, our sweet dog, Sally and family & friends.

These experiences help me stay grounded and fulfilled.

Responsibility and integrity are also central to both my work and my relationships. I strive to approach others with honesty, sincerity and accountability.

Generosity guides me through my commitment to giving back to my community, whether through my work as a therapist or through

involvement in other community spaces. Relationships remain one of the most important aspects of my life, and I am incredibly thankful for the support system I have built through family, friends and Alpha Sigma Alpha sisters.

Finally, growth and learning continue to shape me personally and professionally. I am always seeking new research, training and opportunities to improve the care I provide to my clients and the support I offer to newer clinicians.

For me, Alpha Sigma Alpha’s open motto, “Aspire. Seek. Attain.” reflects both my personal and professional journey.

I aspire to lead by example by practicing balance, self-care and compassion in my everyday life.

I seek opportunities to continue learning, serving my community and helping others through mental health care and music. And I attain my goals by providing quality care to my clients while helping train and support the next generation of therapists. Alpha Sigma Alpha has influenced me far beyond my collegiate years. The lessons, friendships and values I gained as a member continue to shape who I am today as a therapist, leader, volunteer and sister.

Elevate & Influence

KIM BRUSH, ΔI, ALUMNA Balance, generosity, growth, integrity, learning, relationships, responsibility and enjoyment. What struck me about this list is how much they mirror what counselors and instructors hope to instill in clients and students, respectively.

From my first psychology class in high school, something clicked.

Learning these theories and concepts came easy for me. I went to college as a psychology major. Attending a relatively big school, I still felt lost at the beginning of my sophomore year, like I hadn’t made any real connections. I went through recruitment because of my hall mates. As a first-generation college student, I wasn’t even sure what a sorority was. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made.

Back then, memorizing the creed, the founders and doing sister interviews helped get through recruitment. What we really were doing was building relationships. All these years later, I am still close with many of my sisters. More recently, I joined the AΣA Book Club and met friends.

My first full-time job after graduating with my psychology major was in retail management. I realized pretty quickly helping someone pick out an occasion dress was not quite the helping I sought to do. I moved home and went back to school to earn my masters in professional counseling and my Licensed Professional Counselor designation. For several years, I worked full-time in the counseling and advising center at a university while also working part-time doing case therapy.

My plan was to take a couple years off school and then earn my doctorate. What’s that phrase about best laid plans? Instead, I got married and a few years later had a baby. My job was helping individuals learn to navigate their worlds and to be their best selves. How could I not stay home and help my child develop the same tools? My responsibility was to my family. I was able to create a balance being home full-time during the day and continued with case therapy in the evenings.

When my daughter started kindergarten, the opportunities to work part-time as a counselor at a grade school and to adjunct teach psychology at a college came up. I took a chance, and found I enjoyed it, and it fit well with my counseling experiences. A young woman 14

Alpha Sigma Alpha's vision is to elevate the influence of women in the world.

In each issue of the Phoenix Magazine, members will be featured who are living Alpha Sigma Alpha's vision, purpose and values in their everyday lives.

Kim with her certified therapy dogs Jake, Wynnie and Pavlov with cerebral palsy confined to a wheelchair with a service dog was in several of my classes. My thoughts of raising service dogs quickly changed when I realized I’d have to give them up every 18 months. Enter therapy dogs, unlike service dogs that are trained to assist one individual with a specific disability; therapy dogs are trained to engage with individuals. Dogs' nonjudgmental nature provides the core components of unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence to help create a welcoming environment conducive to growth.

For the past several years, Wynnie and Jake, my certified therapy dogs, have taken turns accompanying me to schools – where I work and volunteer.

Their presence has so many positive effects from decreasing stress and anxiety to improving motivation, self-esteem, social interactions and moods through increasing oxytocin.

When my daughter went to college, I returned to school and earned my doctorate in counseling with a specialization in traumatology. Initially, being in classes with students my daughter’s age children felt a bit awkward. We were all there for the same reasons, to learn and grow.

To me, working as a counselor and college instructor are both teaching, but on different levels.

Counseling involves helping clients learn more effective coping skills and create self-awareness while college instruction is helping students to understand psychology concepts and theories. Sharing examples from my counseling experiences and relevant personal experiences are valuable in bringing concepts to life. Research has shown that students learn more when they make associations between material and their own lives. Starting each class meeting with a mindfulness exercise and assignments that encourage self-reflection are also ways to encourage this connection. More importantly, I believe there is a responsibility to educate the entire person.

Cultivating an environment where all students feel welcomed and valued is essential to their success. The idea of contributing to the success of future counselors brings me enormous satisfaction and joy.

For years, we have known that sisterhood provides a home away from home for collegians, but in a post-pandemic world where collegiate mental health is at the forefront, we needed more than anecdotes; we needed data.

This isn’t because sorority life is more stressful, it’s because the "sisterhood effect" is in play. In an environment where checking in on each other is the norm, a diagnosis isn't just a label; it is proof that the support system is working and getting women the resources they need. The research shows that while sorority women are great at seeking help, we often struggle to identify specific symptoms of anxiety or other disorders. Through Alpha Sigma Alpha’s Behind Happy Faces program, members are equipped with the tools to look past the surface and understand the complexities of mental health. Take 10 minutes to explore the program and other available resources so you can recognize when a sister is struggling before it becomes a crisis.

“Growing up, I was drawn to the sisterly bonds I saw on television, but in college, I let fear about grades get in the way. I now know some things are meant to be; if I had joined then, I never would have found my home in Alpha Sigma Alpha. I was inspired by AΣA’s "rising from the ashes" history and quickly realized that every member here is valued. Whether I’m speaking with a collegiate member or a multi-decade advisor, the greatest benefit has been building friendships across different generations and life experiences. I joined expecting to give, but I had no idea how much I would receive. Serving as a region facilitator for Region 7 has developed my leadership skills in ways I never expected.

My advice to women joining as alumnae is to plug in right away! Carrying the title of "member" means nothing if you don't take steps to make your membership come to life.”

To begin, a current member in good standing can sponsor a candidate by submitting a formal application. Once the application is reviewed and the candidate is invited to membership, the journey officially begins.

WRITTEN BY: ALEX HORTON, IH, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP GROWTH Gamma Pi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was reinstalled on April 25, 2026, at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. The celebration began on Friday with an open house on the Missouri Valley College campus.

Guests included alumnae, campus administrators, members of campus organizations and loved ones of the soon-to-be initiated members.

On Saturday, collegians and local alumnae gathered on campus for a day of celebration. The day began with words of inspiration from National President Amber Shaverdi Huston, HH, to the soon-to-be-initiated members. The new members participated in the Sanctuary Degree Service, followed by the Service for the Installation of a New Chapter and the presentation of the phoenix pins to all founding members. Members of the Zeta Zeta Chapter at the University of Central Missouri, the advisory board members of the Zeta Eta Chapter at Rockhurst University, MO, the Greater Kansas City Alumnae Chapter and Gamma Pi Chapter alumnae members served as sponsors for the initiates.

Saturday evening, collegians and alumnae gathered at the Malcolm Center Bacon Conference Room, where the women were joined by their guests for an evening banquet celebrating their achievements as a new chapter. The installation banquet, hosted

by Assistant Director of Membership Growth Alex Horton, IH, included toasts to the chapter by Chapter Support Specialist Jamie Nicholls, ΓM, Emerging Chapter Facilitator & Gamma Pi Chapter Advisor Jana Champion Caudle, ΓΠ, and Past National President Lori White Scott, EE. The president of Missouri Valley College Dr. Joseph Parisi, also gave words of encouragement to the new chapter and expressed the importance they play in the Missouri Valley College community. The banquet included reading congratulatory notes, presentations of gifts to the chapter and a video showing the chapter’s journey. The evening concluded with the presentation of the Gamma Pi Chapter charter by National President Amber Shaverdi Huston, HH.

Countdown to our 125th Anniversary As we countdown to our 125th anniversary on Nov. 15, 2026, the From the Archives section will be focused on our founding members.

FIRST INITIATE: HATTIE JAKE VIRGINIA KELLY THOMAS, A

The record of the sorority’s first initiation states that on Jan. 3, 1903, Hattie Jake Virginia Kelly, A, was made a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Hattie’s signature is among those on the original charter. Born Aug. 29, 1886 in Nansemond County, VA, she attended the State Female Normal School in Farmville from 1902 to 1906. After graduating from school, Hattie stayed involved with the sorority, serving as alumnae editor of The Aegis, Alpha Sigma Alpha’s first magazine 1909 -1912, president of the Central Alumnae Association 1910 - 1912, and national vice president 1910 - 1912. She served on the social life cabinet 1914 - 1918. In 1930, newly elected president Wilma Wilson Sharp, ZZ, sought out information regarding the early history of the sorority. Hattie’s own accounting of the early years and her relationship with the founders was the tie for which Mrs. Sharp was searching. Mrs. Sharp appointed Hattie as historian, a role that entailed years of finding founders, early members, facts and photographs to preserve the early history of the sorority. Hattie served as historian 1932 - 1938. Her recollections are what Alpha Sigma Alphas today regard as the history of the sorority between the years 1901 to 1914. Hattie attended the reinstallation of Alpha Chapter at Longwood College in 1933. She and Margaret Patterson Martz, A, presented a certified copy of the original 1903 charter to Mrs. Sharp during the reinstatement. In 1934, Hattie served as the official hostess of the national convention in Old Point Comfort, VA. During the initiation service at that convention, Hattie received a jeweled badge and commendation for her services to the sorority throughout the years. Hattie passed away March 19, 1980 at age 94 and is buried in All Faith Episcopal Church Cemetery in Mechanicsville, MD. ~ Adapted from The Years Behind Us: A History of Alpha Sigma Alpha 1901-2001

Penny Miranda and Bella Perez participated in yoga during the Under the Stars Sisterhood event, spending time together while strengthening connections and celebrating sisterhood.

Caitie Haberman and Haeleigh Thompson attended the AFLV Central conference, where they strengthened their leadership abilities and gained new ideas to support recruitment efforts.

8. Iota Kappa, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, GA Members participated in Girls on the Run as runners and cheerleaders, encouraging participants and celebrating their accomplishments throughout the event.

9. Gamma Eta, The Pennsylvania State University

Past chapter president Ari De Armas and current chapter president Katie Ketterer participated in a 46-hour philanthropy event, demonstrating their commitment to service and leadership.

10. Delta Kappa, University of Southern Indiana

Chapter members participated in the Riley Walk, joining the community in support of Riley Children's Health and its mission to provide care for children and families.
