NEWS TO Gamma Beta recolonized The recolonization of Gamma Beta at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point took place Oct. 30, 1993. Twenty-eight women from the Zeta Epsilon Nu local sorority were pledged by Julie Wiley, A, chapter consultant, and Sandy Phillips Brzezinski, fE, constitution chairman. The original Gamma Beta Chapter was founded in 1957 and closed in the 1970s. The university enrolls 8,600 students on a 335acre campus in central Wisconsin. Zeta Epsilon Nu was founded in 1990. Installation is planned for spring 1994.

Colony pledged at Averett The Averett College Colony was pledged Nov. 29, 1993, at Averett College in Danville, VA. The women were pledged by Julie Wiley, A, chapter consultant, and Cherie Fink Shallock, D.Z. Averett College is in southern Virginia. Installation is planned for spring 1994.

Colony pledged at Wagner The Wagner College Colony was pledged Dec. 11 , 1993, at Wagner College in Stanton Island, NY. The women were pledged by Mary McGuire, NN , Province I director. The group was founded as a sorority interest group in April 1992. Installation is planned for spring 1994.

Two chapters closed It is with sincere regret that the National Council of Alpha Sigma Alpha announces the closing of Epsilon Phi Chapter at Indiana University in Bloomington and Epsilon Delta Chapter at St. Mary's College in Winona, MN. The closing of Epsilon Phi will be effective at the end of the school year on May 6, 1994. The closing

Andrea Tunia hired at headquarters Andrea Tunia, EI, former chapter consultant, has joined the staff at National Headquarters as director of chapter services. Andrea, who most recently worked for the Social Security Administrion in Memphis, will be responsible for providing chapter consultant, national officer and collegiate and alumnae chapter support services. She also will be involved in the computerization of membership records.

Hazing update: Two more chapters on probation . The Alpha Sigma Alpha National Council has placed two more chapters on probation for hazing, one for the rest of the school year and another for two years. This brings to four the number of A'iA chapters on probation for hazing, which is contradictory to the ideals and values of the sorority and poses a severe risk for individual and sorority liability. With these actions, the national organization has indicated it will not tolerate hazing in any of its chapters. Anyone aware of problems at A'iA chapters should contact National Headquarters. Your name will be kept confidendial.

Keeping the Alpha Spirit As the result of a study by a committee appointed by the National Council in 1992, Alpha Sigma Alpha has renewed its commitment to the four-fold, lifetime development and education of its members. New programs have been developed as a result of the study and will be unveiled at the 1994 National Convention in Milwaukee. It should be great!

CORRECTIONS * In the summer 1993 Alumane Action, the Kansas City Alumnae Chapter was incorrectly located in Kansas. The correct location is Missouri. In the summer 1993 issue, an article on the installation of Zeta Delta at North Adams State College, MA, omitted several names of charter initiates. They are Jacqueline h Rosner, Dena Scott, Kerry Stocks, Tanya Volff, Annette Wall and Michelle Weston. The Phoenix regrets the errors.

LETTERS Kudos for summer issue The summer 1993 issue ofThe Phoenix was without a doubt one of my favorites to date. I truly enjoyed reading about the history of the crest and national headquarters and hope to see more articles dedicated to history in future issues. mately $70,000. The housing corporation had an attorney on retainer and a local real estate agent was investigating property values near the university campus. In August of that year, the housing corporation proposed and received approval from the national council to buy a parcel of farm land bordering Greek row at Northern Illinois in November 1988.

Ready to build Seven years into the project, in August 1992, the housing corporation convened to consider a building project in the spring of 1993. While cash balances were more favorable , it still was clear there would have to be additional financing. A committee was formed to prepare a building proposal to secure the national organization's commitment to join the housing corporation in providing a permanent dwelling place for the Beta Rho Chapter. At that same time, the housing corporation began preliminary negotiations with three local lending institutions for a long-term loan. In March 1993, the First National Bank in DeKalb was selected as the primary lender. Two short-term loans also were procured, one from the national organization. In February 1993, three architectural firms were interviewed, and based on references, personality and overall fee, the architectural firm of Williams & Elliott was chosen by the housing corporation. The firm drafted blueprints, based on a design predetermined by the housing corporation many months earlier. Six separate construction companies were asked to bid on the project in March (Photo by Rod Karmenzind) 1993. Willowcreek Construction Co. was selected as the general contractor because of its recent successful completion of another Greek house as well its most competitive bid.

old house to the new house. During the summer, the chapter conducted a raffle to buy furniture. The new house was finished in August 1993, and the chapter was able to move in at the beginning of the fall semester. This three-story, 13,000-square-foot brick home has 21 bedrooms, six showers, six toilets, two guest bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, dining room, great room, den, computer room, laundry facilities and a two-bedroom manager's apartment. This eight-year project stands as testimony to the alumnae that put into action AlA's open motto: "Aspire, Seek, Attain." The board's function is to assist and advise the chapter and the national organization, work with attorneys, real estate agents, loan companies, insurance representatives and others to assess the amount of money needed and the conditions of leases and/ or loans. velyn G. Bell, twice past national president, died Nov. 4, 1993, in Amherst, NY, at the age of 86. A charter member of Pi Pi Chapter, installed in 1926 at what is now State University College of Buffalo, Ev was president of her college chapter and attended her first national convention that year in Chicago, IL. In 1927, she was appointed to her fust national office as social services chairman, and in 1930, she was elected to the national council as national registrar. This began 28 years of continuous service on the national council that did not end until the completion of her second term as national president in 1958. Those 28 years were an exciting time for Alpha Sigma Alpha. The national convention in 1930 elected the youngest national council since the sorority's reorganization in 1914 and marked a significant change in the direction of the sorority. Twenty years later, AlA became a member of the National Panhellenic Conference. And during her second term as president, Ev presided over the establishment of the fust national headquarters in Kenmore, NY. But Ev was more than a devoted national counselor. At a time when careers for most women were limited to marriage and children, she was an educator for 45 years with the Buffalo city schools system. She began as a seventh and eighth

grade social studies teacher, was an assistant principal, supervisor of elementary education and assistant coordinator of personnel before becoming director of personnel for the Buffalo Board of Education in 1965, a position she held until her retirement in 1972. A graduate of the College of Buffalo in 1926, Ev also earned a masters degree from Teachers College of Columbia University, NY. In 1969, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the College of Buffalo for "outstanding professional services." In 1963, she received the Wilma Wilson

Sharp Alumnae Award. Ev was a member of numerous professional and civic organizations and the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church. Very active in the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter for many years, Ev was instrumental in re-establishing Pi Pi at the College of Buffalo in 1976. The chapter had been closed in 1953 by a ban on national sororities and fraternities by the State University of New York board of trustees. At the suggestion of the Buffalo alumnae, the AlA National Council established the Evelyn G. Bell Award in 1979. The award is given biannually to a member who has shown outstanding leadership and loyalty to Alpha Sigma Alpha as a collegiate officer, alumnae officer and national officer. The fust award was presented by Ev to Hiwana Cupp Crompton, BE, at the 1980 national convention in Niagara Falls, NY. During an interview in 1991 , Ev shared some of her Alpha Sigma Alpha memories with several Buffalo alumnae sisters. They found her, even at age 84, an attractive woman with a great sense of humor. She shared with them her great devotion, in time and determination, to the sorority. From time spent in college to make Pi Pi an AlA chapter to summers away from her career to attend national council meetings and conventions, Ev always took time for AlA. Ev is survived by a sister and two nephews.

Swisher For graduate or undergraduate work in any field. Established in 1952 by Miss Swisher, professor emerita, Miami University, OH, and longtime advisor to Alpha Alpha Chapter.

Amy Sutton, Epsilon Epsilon, is the recipient of the Amy M. Swisher Scholarship. Amy will graduate in May 1994 from Emporia State University, KS, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Since pledging Alpha Sigma Alpha in the fall of 1990, she has been cotreasurer of the pledge class, assistant panhellenic representative, panhellenic representative, vice president of panhellenic, president of panhellenic and house manager. She has volunteered her time for Special Olympics and Big Brother /Big Sister bowling. Amy also has

participated in the bloodmobile and the United Way fund drive. Amy has been involved in the union activities council, Xi Phi (leadership) and Spurs, the sophomore service organization. Her honors include Who's Who Among Students of American Colleges and Universities, travel and leisure committee person of the year, R.B. Russell Scholarship, Ellsworth Dent Scholarship, Walter and Ruth Myer Academic Scholarship, Presidential Academic Fitness Award and the Dean's Academic Honor Roll.

Kimberly, who plans to graduate in April1994, has made the dean's list every semester. Kimberly has held many positions in her chapter, including secretary, rush committee, fundraising chairman and pledge class treasurer. She is involved in Kappa Alpha Psi (business), where she has been secretary and fundraising chairman, and is on the porn pon squad. Kimberly is also in Phi Eta Sigma (freshman scholarship) and the college assembly.

Chapter involvement for Michelle included being philanthropic chairman, pledge class chaplain and the recipient of her chapter's Elizabeth Bird Small nomination. Her honors include USM All-American Scholar and recipient of the St. Louis Alumnae Panhellenic Association Scholarship and the President's Honorary Scholarship. Michelle was active in the student activities board and served as a career assistant coordinator. She was assistant chairman of the Dog Days celebration and a representative for Tag Days, a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. Michelle was also a volunteer at the Life Skills Center in Kirksville, MO.

She has served her chapter on the junior standards board, as gift chairman and as rush committee chairman. Meghan is on the women's track and field team and volunteers for Special Olympics. She is also actively involved in the local chapter of the council for exceptional children, where she is on the executive board.

She plans to graduate in May 1994. Michelle is active in Golden Key, Alpha Lambda Delta (freshman scholarship), council for exceptional children and elementary education in action. She was the recipient of the Teacher Alumni Scholarship. Michelle volunteers for handicapped swimming and aerobics. She also serves as a very special arts volunteer and a tutor at Delaware County Children's Home.

Jennifer is also a student ambassador, chief of staff of the student senate, a member of the Society of Collegiate Journalists and works with the Big Sister program for underprivileged children. She is actively involved in the Philadelphia Metro Alumnae Chapter. Her other activities include being a Special Olympics tennis coach, fmancial advisor to Kappa Kappa Chapter, Order of Omega and volunteering at the Walnut Street Theater and Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church.

Delta Iota wins Crown of Excellence The Alpha Sigma Alpha Crown of Excellence Award

has been given annually since 1986. This year, other chapter awards have been awarded in an off-convention year. Delta Iota Chapter at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE, has won the Crown of Excellence Award. This award includes an engraved plaque for permanent display and a traveling Crown of Excellence bowl. A chapter must demonstrate that it has a functioning advisory board, an effective officer training and transition program, participation in campus panhellenic leadership roles, keeps current with all fees due to National Headquarters, takes quota and initiates at least 90 percent of pledges. All the chapters considered for this award were named four-star chapters.

Three win collegiate awards Every year, Alpha Sigma Alpha presents three collegians with these individual awards.

Elizabeth Bird Small Award The Elizabeth Bird Small Award is given to one who displays leadership in campus and community activities, outstanding personality and character attributes and excels in scholarship, both with grades and worthy attitudes.

Melanie Griswold, Phi Phi, has been selected as the recipient , of the 1993 Elizabeth Bird Small Award. Melanie is a senior at I Northwest Missouri State University. She has served her chapter as president, editor, pledge academic advisor, banner committee chairman and pledge class president. Melanie served the Sigma Society Committee Service Organization as rush chairman and pledge educator. Other activities have included Phi Eta Sigma (freshman scholarship). Students Helping Students (tutoring highrisk middle school children), Cardinal Key, Alpha Mu Gamma (foreign languages). American Marketing Association, Big/Little Sisters and student ambassador. Making the dean's list every semester, Melanie has had the highest overall grade point average in her chapter for three years. She also has been an active participant in chapter philanthropic activities. Other members say Melanie not only has an excellent scholastic record, but she can make others feel good about themselves. "She not only gives 100% of herself to her scholastics, but also to her friends, family and organizations."

Frost Fidelity Award Fidelity implies devotion and "unswerving loyalty and allegiance." The Frost Fidelity Award is given to a collegiate who goes "beyond the call of duty," offers loyalfriendship and lends her abilities to all projects.

thus was selected as the 1993 recipient of the Frost Fidelity Award. Christina is a junior at GMI Engineering and Management Institute. Christy has served her chapter as house steward, house manager and vice president. She has served the university community as a dormitory representative, a student ambassador and on the yearbook staff. Her fellow chapter members say she "seems to be part of every committee in the sorority. She is always the driving force of the committee, assuring that the work is complete and reflects well on the sorority. She single handedly completed the cooking and cleaning during parents' weekend, and she goes out of her way to help a physically handicapped sister attend sorority events." Christy serves as the spirit of the chapter and is a motivating force to other members. "Christy is always cheerful, and she never seems down," says one member.

Ideal Pledge Award The Ideal Pledge Award is based on the ability to work within the pledge group, leadership qualities, spirit and attitude during the pledge period.

Jennifer Jerome, Delta Chi, is the recipient of the 1993 Ideal Pledge Award. A sophomore at Bloomsburg University, Jennifer served as chaplin for her pledge class. Jennifer inspired her pledge class with poems, songs and constant smiles and was always ready to give her moral support to anyone who needed it. She attended all pledge events and quickly completed her study modules. The chapter members selected her as a panhellenic representative. Jennifer is also an outstanding student. As a freshman, she attended the leadership program sponsored by the university. She is a member of the university scholars program in which she interviews possible candidates and provides them with an orientation to the university. She founded Students Together to Alleviate Racial Tensions (STAR1l

Zeta Gamma installed at Gannon University BY KENDRA CLARK, BB he Zeta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was installed on April24, 1993, at Gannon University in Erie, PA. This group of women was part of a very strong local sorority, Zeta Tau, wWch was chosen "Outstanding Greek Chapter" four out of the six years in their Wstory. After the university made a push to have all of its local fraternities and sororities seek national affiliation, Alpha Sigma Alpha was one of three national sororities to affiliate at Gannon University in the 199293 school year. The Zeta Gamma Chapter was pledged in December. Through a great deal of hard work, determination and teamwork by all of its members, the women of Zeta Gamma Chapter reached their goal of installation before the graduation of their senior members. Members of Pi Pi, Gamma Psi, Epsilon Theta and the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter served as sponsors. The wWte luncheon was held at the Elephant Bar. Lori Scott, serving as toastmistress, read excerpts from a history of Gannon University and Zeta Gamma Chapter. After lunch, Kim O'Key, Zeta Gamma Chapter president, opened gifts from all in attendance. The reception was held that afternoon in the Commons at Gannon University. Refreshments were served to university officials, representatives of the other Greek organizations, parents, family and friends. The installation banquet was held at the Rotunda at Union Station. Kendy Clark, chapter consultant, served as toastmistress. Faculty members were in attendance to show their support for this new chapter. Assistant to the vice president of student development, Marianne Bock, was the guest speaker for the evening.

First scholarships established BY BETIY U. WALLICK, ZZ Foundation Chairman

he Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation has established the Founders路 Memorial Scholarships to commemorate the sorority's centennial in 2001. The Foundation will award the first scholarship at the 1994 National Convention in Milwaukee to an outstanding undergraduate member who exemplifies the vision, academic excellence and leadership skills of the founders. Tv.ro scholarships will be awarded at the 1996 national convention, three at the 1998 convention and five at the 2000 convention. Thereafter, five scholarships will be awarded annually. Any collegian interested in applying for the first scholarship should contact National Headquarters immediately.

Become a charter donor To fund the Founders' Memorial Scholarships. the Foundation has

established a special giving category. Those who donate $500 between June 1993 and the close of the 1994 national convention will become Charter Centennial Donors. Those who, during the same period, pledge to donate $500 by the 2000 national convention will become Centennial Donors. For more information about the new scholarships or how to become a charter or centennial donor, please contact Lisa Tait at National Headquarters.

New giving level During its summer meeting, the Foundation board established the new giving level of $2,500 to $4,999. Those who have given this amount will be called Narcissus Donors. Currently five donors have reached this giving level. The Palm level will be redesignated for donations of $1,000 to $2.499. Currently 15 women have reached this giving level.

Anniversary gifts established The Foundation board also established a chapter anniversary gift program, in honor of chapters who have attained 25-, 50- or 75-year anniversaries. The Foundation will present gifts to university libraries to purchase books in honor of those chapters: $25 for 25th anniversaries, $50 for 50th anniversaries and $75 for 75th anniversaries. Chapters celebrating anniversaries in 1993 were Gamma Rho, East Stroudsburg University, PA, 25 years, and Beta Kappa, Western Illinois University, 50 years. The appropriate gifts were presented to those chapter's university libraries.

Other awards In 1993, two Beta Sigma Scholarships were awarded through the Foundation. Also, a gift was made to the 1993 Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institutes to cover expenses for chapters traveling long distances.
