Dear ASA Sisters , This spring greeting to you is being written during a mid-winter blizzard. The combined energy crisis has given me a school holiday and Phil and I are spending a few days in the Pennsylvania mountains loving our five -month old grandson. Hopefully when you read this the cares of a severe winter will have passed. It is occasionally like a hard ·w inter in some of our chapters as we must weather the problems caused by low membership , budget, housing, etc. ; but fortunately spring looms ahead and concern for one another pulls us through. It is such a joy to read the Field Rep reports which often tell of chapter members who enjoy each other . Becky Wilson and Connie Peyton are nearing the end of at least one visit to every collegiate chapter. They have also helped in the pledging of Delta Omicron Colony in York , Pennsylvania , and Delta Pi in Institute , West Virginia . Our congratulations to these new pledges of Alpha Sigma Alpha; we look forward to their Installation. It was my personal privilege to pledge Delta Omicron Colony at York College, and on the same day I was delighted to visit with Mary Blackstone, Past National President, at a tea Jane Peters gave to introduce Diane Stevenson, the new Province Director for alumnae in Province II .

Graduation day is rapidly approaching for our many senior collegiate members . I offer my congratulations and best wishes for a successful future which included your role as an Alpha Sigma Alpha alumna. Remember that A'LA is a lifetime experience offering many joys after college days .

I have asked each Councilor to review the report of the Aims and Objectives Committee and to be prepared with recommendations at the meeting of Nation'll Council in June. One major decision to be made concerns a possible change to a three-year Convention cycle . Those who are currently responsible for guiding the sorority would welcome your ideas. Convention 1978 in Indianapolis will also be on the agenda; if you have any suggestions please write to one of your National Officers.

Become involved in the State or Province Day planned for your area . The activities of these functions give us each the opportunity to share our sisterhood with young and old.

In public schools, the most severely impaired children are in classes of as few as six children called a self-contained class. The teacher has had training in special education.

There are usually a variety of special materials, machinery (such as a language master .. t~pe recorder, or teaching machines); a teachers ai.de and volunteers to assist in teaching. Each child has an individual education plan and is taught on a one -to-one basis. Moderately impaired children are taught in larger classes of eight to sixteen.

Mildly educationally exceptional children spend most of their school day in a regular classroom but do receive special instruction from a resource Training professionals to work with young severely (!I handiteacher. Their handicaps are caused by many factors such as diseases (rubella), infections, accidents or injuries pre or post-natal; inadequate or inconsistent home environments; or genetic defects.

The majority of positions in special education are connected with and supported by the public schools. These people have been greatly aided recently by Public Law 94-142 (The Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1975). By 1980 , all exceptional children aged three to twen ty-one, will have a free appropriate education.

nurse or a visiting teacher assists farrlilies in securing needed medical examination, treatment and supplies. The school psychologist evaluates the child's learning abilities and levels . A reading specialist may help determine the best techniques for teaching reading. A guidance counselor helps the child and family understand the exceptional child's problems. The supervisor of special education coordinates the entire program.

Private schools have many of the same positions that public schools do. There are both day and residential schools which specialize in one area of special education. They are sometimes associated with hospitals or colleges. They usually serve the most severe exceptional children. In general, a teacher's qualifications must be the same as for public school teaching.

The amou路n t and type of training needed for positions in special education varies according to the job's responsibilities. Usually a high school education and a love of children are required for a teacher's aide position. Some junior or community colleges offer courses in this area. A special class teacher has at least a bachelor's degree and a number of states require a fifth year or a master's degree for this position . Generally the first two years of study are devoted to gaining a liberal arts background. The last two years are spent studying child development; psychology of exceptional children; the teaching of reading , arithmetic, social studies and science; tests and measurements; behavior management; and courses within one's area of specialization. Student teaching for two to three hundred hours usually concludes the program.

Positions in supervision or administration of special education programs require graduate study. Research and college teaching require a doctorate. For information on colleges and universities that offer teacher education programs in special education, write for the booklet Special Education Careers: Programs for Professional Training in Special Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Office of Education, Washington, D.C., 20202.

There are numerous positions in special education outside of public and private schools.

Leadership and staff positions in recreation and camping for special children are offered in some communities. Directing or working on the staff of Mental Retardation Services or an Association for Retarded Citizens offers many contacts with exceptional people through activities like scouting, adult education, community information, citizen advocacy or residential home counseling .

Positions are available as houseparents for Attention Homes or Half-Way Houses for juvenile delinquents and educational programs for inmates.

One new excamg position within special education is that of infant education. This person works in a hospital's intensive care unit evaluating high risk infants. Educational plans are made for the parents to carry out weekly with the baby both in the hospital and later at home. Other facets of this job would include advising parent groups, organizing play groups, and securing services for the family.

Counseling and teaching parents is an important aspect of all phases of special education.

Presently the priorities in preparing special education personnd are in these areas: preschool handicapped children and infants, severely and multihandicapped, paraprofessionals, physical education, therapeutic recreation, vocational and career education programs and inservice for regular education teachers.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Dear A"i.A Sisters,

As an Early Childhood educator I am frequently asked by colleagues, students and parents "What are the most important things for a child to learn in preparation for school?" Certainly this problem is too large an area for any one person to tackle -- and even if one individual could come up with a solution , who's to say it would be best for all children? Nevertheless, I have attempted to answer this question on various occasions and wish to share some of my thoughts with you. One item I am insistent upon is that preparation for school is not a matter of memorization and mental skills such as learning numbers, letters, shapes and so on . I certainly am not opposed to learning these essential skills ; its just that they are more appropriately taught , and easier to learn, after other important kinds of competencies have gotten a good start. Early concentration on academic tasks can be inhibitory. We adults often forget that nature has its own time table for growth . Trying to teach an average three year old to add is like trying to teach the three month old to crawl. The damage could be irreversible.

A child who enters school feeling happy , self-confident, positive, curious and friendly will almost inevitably learn. A nervous, frightened, angry , preoccupied child with unmet needs will not be able to use the intellectual stimulation available. In my opinion , a child will be better prepared for school -- and, more importantly, life-- if s/ he learns the following skills: To love oneself Self-love is a most pervasive and necessary function . Unless you have the capacity to cherish your own life, it is very difficult to appreciate others . It is the first lesson we learn when we are born, and we learn it from the way we're treated by the first people who care for us. Sometimes we can't help a child love himself until we re-evaluate some of our own attitudes and behaviors. The puritantical notion that everyone is either good or bad and that children, therefore , must _be taught ~o !Je good has many problems. We are all a little bit of "devil" and "angel". What matters is that we learn to live with that truth. Learning to accept our unsocial, negative behaviors is part of growing up. We must learn controls, but not by denying that inappropriate impulses exist. The child who is made to feel bad develops self-hatred -- and that interferes with learning and living more than any other factor!

To communicate one's feelings Children need to develop the skill of communicating their feelings into words and to realize that it's natural to have uneasy and frightening feelings when you are hurt, worried , and when life is painful. It's impossible to learn when one bottles in feelings that s/ he thinks are unacceptable. If a child can say to her/ his Mother , "You scare me when you yell so loud" , the mother just might calm down and reason rationally. A young child who can comfortably and spontaneously communicate his/ her feelings by saying "I love you" , "I need help" or "My tummy feels funny when I forget my milk money", has skills that will give him / her the freedom s/ he needs to think, wonder and learn.

To wonder and ask why We all too often spend the early years trying to teach children academic skills while obscuring and , perhaps , stiffling, their natural instinctive intellectual curiosity. Adults become so preoccupied with giving the facts that we stop listening to the marvelous questions children ask -- "Why did Sammy Hamster die?" ; "How do the stars work?" ; "Why is Petie's skin black and mine white?" In order to facilitate these inquiries we must encourage the child's questions and help him / her know there are ways to get answers. We must also inform the child that some questions don't have answers , that some have many answers , and that sometimes we have to make an effort to find out our own special answers to some problems.

To have a mind of one's own The sense of being a unique person and having the right to make choices is a vital part of development . If children have a sense of who they are , they will certainly have preferences and opinions by the time they start to school. We as adults must encourage a child to express his/ her opinions without fear of reprisal. We all want our children to make critical responses , to have good judgments , to have inner convictions . But they can't wait until college age to develop these skills; they begin when we give them options .. . "John , would you like to wear your red sweater or your blue sweater?" Or "We're having pancakes for breakfast but you may have a bowl of cereal if you prefer. " When we indicate respect for a child's personality , his views , his likes and dislikes we prepare him / her for situations in which s/ he can make a spontaneous decision on his/ her own.

To trust adults Many adults think consistency is what makes one trustworthy. However , I feel there is a fine line between consistency and rigidity ; it is equally important to trust people even though their feelings fluctuate and minds change. Growth makes people change, and we are all subject to swings in mood. The only consistencies that are important to a child are our attempts to be honest with him and to explain our inconsistencies as well as we can. It is difficult to trust people if they lie to you - if they tell you that the doctor won't hurt when in effect he does! If you want to be trusted it's better to say "This shot will probably sting a little , but it will soon be over. It's okay to be afraid and cry." The development of trust depends also on the degree we are willing to share a child's feelings about people. "Yes I see what you mean about Aunt Pat ; she is bossy when we visit. " Distrust can result from feeling like we're the only one who sees the unpleasant qualities in other people . We won't destroy a child's trust if we acknowledge human imperfection.

In conclusion , I am eager to see children enjoy the miracles of learning and have a sense of intergrity and success in mastering the skills they need. Learning is much easier when there is no unfinished business in a child's early development. People who have been helped to work toward mastery in these areas will rarely be purposely cruel or knowingly exploitative of others.

Our Editor , Helenmarie Hofman, stated in the Winter 1976-77 Phoenix that AL..A's have an obligation to " achieve our highest potential and to provide direction , incentive and opportunity for others to achieve individual heights." We , therefore , are charged with the responsibility of. setting high standards and examples for our future generations . The attitudes and values described earlier can produce young people who care more for other people than for things and who strive to make the world a happier and safer place to live. If we direct more of our attention to these deeper human values we can raise a generation of wise and loving persons who will have the capacity to live with change; people who strive to Aspire, Seek, Attain. And , after all, that is a most important goal for present andfuture Alpha Sigma Alpha's!!

The profession of Early Childhood Education offers many satisfactions . One solid satisfaction is the opportunity to work in a still unsettled, expanding field where there is much work to be done .

ALPHA CHA A'i..A's at Longwood College are now celebrating their 75th anniversary and the sisters are a versatile; hardworking bunch. Last semester Alpha was the largest sorority on campus. During rush in January we had an addition of six new pledges.

During the Diamond Jubilee Convention this past summer Alpha Sigs visited the Alpha Chapter at Longwood on the 29th of June. Alpha chapter hosted a white luncheon where a ritualistic ceremony and a memorial service were held that afternoon. In December the national president presented the Longwood Chapter a silver punch bowl commemorating the 75th anniversary.

Last Spring during Greek Week we received the scholastic award for having the highest grade point average of any sorority on campus. Sheila Magee is a member of Pi Gamma Mu honorary sorority and Ann Crowley and Kim Turnbull are members crf Alpha Lambda Delta Honary.

Alpha is involved with two philanthropic projects with Gwen Koechlein as our Chairman.

Each semester every sister visits Carolyn Johnson at the Virginia Home in Richmond, VA. We also sponsor and write Jaba Karan Mondel in India every week.

Many Alpha Sigs participated in Freshmen Orientation this past fall. Seniors, Anna Marshall, Eleanor Borbas and Mary Ann Francis served as orientation leaders. Sophmores that served as colleagues were Robin Perdue and Ellie Kay Garner.

The producer and co-producer of the 1977 Miss Longwood pageant are A"i..A's Pat Nuckols and Mary Woolfolk. Beth Tomlinson a senior is the present Miss Longwood and we have several girls entered in this year's pageant. The 1976 Tobacco Queen was an A"i..A Cindy Thomas .

Walk is conducted from Lankford Hall. The girls pick up their bids, as their names are called leave Lankford through center lower door; walk or run up sidewalk to the soron'tys grouped along the sides of the walk .

Alphas are very active around campus . Anne Penello , a senior, was voted Best Active. Alpha's Pat Nuckols, Mary Woolfolk, Robin Perdue, Ellie Kay Garner and Gwen Dey participated in the admissions aid program. This program assists the admissions office in recruiting prospective students to the Longwood Campus. These students are selected and interviewed by the admissions staff and are essential to maintaining good students on the Longwood Campus.

Sisters also hold various offices around campus, Kim Turnbull , a pledge , is president of the InterReligious Council. Virginia Flemer is a dorm president and a representative on Residence Board . Eleanor Borbas was an editor for the Virginian, the college annual. Anne Carter Stephens, a pledge is on the "Rotunda Staff', the college paper.

An Alpha is usually present on the Hampden Sydney College homecoming court and this year was no exception. Valerie Booker, a senior, represented Kappa Sigma Fraternity this past fall .

Several Alphas participate in athletics .

Gwen Koechlin is on the varsity tennis team and Robin Perdue is on the swim team. Beverly Mozingo a pledge, will be in the '77 H20 Spring Water Show.

We are selling peanuts now to raise money for for our annual dance . The dance will be April 25 this year in Richmond . Spring also means Senior party and we will bid 14 seniors good-bye.

As you can tell Alpha chapter and its members are very active . Along with being very devoted to their chapter they also participate in various other activities on their college campus .

An Alpha Sig tells the secrets of freelance writing Barbara Sloan Helmer , a Beta Gamma and a member of the Bartlesville, Oklahoma Alumnae Chapter , has been interested in writing since childhood. "My cousin and I used to write and 'produce' a play at every family dinner ," she says .

"Very often my cousin and I appreciated it more than the rest of the family ."

This spring another of Barbara's many articles will be published . Entitled "Judge Garrett's House of History , " the article will appear in Antique Trader .

Encouraged by many teachers throughout school and college to write , Barbara became serious in freelance writing when she moved to Bartlesville with her husband and three -year old son and joined a creative writing club. "The club has been very helpful in criticizing my work and offering suggestions for marketing," she says .

"Also , hearing success stories of other selling writers encourages me to keep working."

Barbara found Writer 's Market very helpful in marketing as well as just studying various publications . "One very important bit of advice -know the markets. One cannot afford to be discouraged with every rejection slip. As the song says , 'pick yourself up , dust yourself off and start all over again .' Paraphrased for a writer might be, 'pick the manuscript us , type it over and send it out again!' Whatever a person's special interests are , hard work is one factor that helps assure success and writing is no exception. " When submitting articles , Barbara does not include a cover letter. She does , however , with book manuscripts. One recent meeting of the writer's club was devoted to the query letter . " It should be a very positive statement as to why this particular book or article is being (or has been)

written and should give a resume of it and tell why you , the author , are qualified to write it and why this publisher being queried should be the one to publish it and promote it. Many selling writers have told me it is well to include a statement as : ' I am sure I can make any changes in the material to fit your publication needsll ' Barbara gets ideas for articles and books from the things around her. Her first article , " Pappy Sloan's Stagecoaches, " told of her father 's hobby of building stagecoaches . So as to give equal time to her mother , the second article ~as "Mamma Sloan's Fabric Shop" and described the shop her mother owned and operated. Subsequent articles have been written about friends or businesses in her locality in which she was interested . Her husband is a freelance photographer so he takes all the photographs for her articles.

"I have received much encouragement from my Alpha Sigma sisters in the Bartlesville Alumnae group ," says Barbara. "The group is small , but everyone has her special interest and it is fun to hear what each is doing and just enjoy each other!"

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was the theme of a beautiful formal and dinner given by the ALPHA GAMMA pledges at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for the memb~rs and alumnae. Handmade pins were given as favors and the Big Sisters received decoupaged bottles with dried flowers .

Pledge Pranks The fall pledges of ALPHA ALPHA Chapter at Miami University have been very busy with Big Sis hunts, a sp~ghetti dinner , a pledge fireside , and a kidnapping and party. Also they treated the active chapter to Halloween treats and surprised everyone with their pledge pranks -- stealing one shoe from each pair of the active's shoes. New this year was a fact finding game, where each pledge had to discover a certain fact about ten of her active sisters . Founder's Day was a special occassion for AA . As we joined with other chapters in celebrating the sorority's Diamond Jubilee, we also recognized our chapter's Silver Anniversary. We honored the day with an afternoon tea and ceremony with our alumnae. In October, AA invited Phi Kappa Psi fraternity to join us in collecting for UNICEF . Our efforts were very successful and $100 was raised . Penny Kiesel , the chapter secretary, graduated in December ; a farewell was included with the December 12 Christmas party.

Exciting Founder's Day The BET A BET AS of the University of Northern Colorado had one of the most exciting Founder's Days ever. They celebrated it with alumnae and the auxiliary members, the Phoenix Sons. The festivities began with a report on the history of Beta Beta chapter by Marlys White, National Ritual Chairman. After a report on National Convention , a buffet lunch was served . As the entertainment for the day , the active chapter did their tradional fall rush play, "Alice in ALA Land ." Afterwards, members of our new men's auxiliary, the Phoenix Sons, were introduced . The chapter was presented 路with a floral arrangement for our mantle.

and many turtle and Raggedy Ann gifts were received. Fraternity pledge exchanges provided opportunities for making many new friends on campus. Celebration of Founder's Day began with a candlelight ceremony in the sorority suite. The following day pins with gold and white ribbons were worn on campus to commemorate our founding . Alpha Gammas participated once again in a marathon walk for children's diseases. Despite the cold and rainy IUP weather the chapter did well . Several hundred laps around the block were completed!

Annual Pledge Sneak The fall pledges of EPSILON EPSILON at Emporia Kansas State took their annual sneek in November. However, before sneaking off they made sure that the actives knew they were gone by decorating the Alpha Sig house in their own original way. Even though the clues to their hideout were not bad, the actives did not find them . After they returned from their escapade we gathered together for some fun at the house .

Founder's Day was celebrated by having a salad supper with members and Alpha Sig alumnae. Entertainment was provided by the pledge class and the chaplain Mary Jo Wilcott . Awards were received by Connie Lindell as Outstanding Senior, and an Alpha Sig alumna received recognition for her 50-year membership. The Alpha Sig seniors proved their status by having their senior walk-out in November. This year the seniors took a trip to Topeka. Before they left they made sure no one knew where their shoes and underwear were!

Wake Up Breakfast A wake up breakfast for the actives is a tradition for the pledges of ETA ETA chapter at Kansas State College . It is really a surprise to be awakened at g am for breakfast . The pledges trick-or-treat for UNICEF on Halloween night. Foun· der's Day was celebrated by inviting the Pittsburg alumnae to share in the celebration . The pledges presented a skit on the founding of AJ.A. Afterwards we enjoyed refreshments with the alumnae. For our philanthropic project we went to New Horizons, a home for mentally retarded young adults in Pittsburg . We played games and helped them make paper turkey decorations . On November 9 a representative from the Kansas Special Olympics showed us a film and offered ideas of different ways we could help in the Olympics.

Mother Patroness Ceremony For the KAPPA KAPPAS at Temple University Founder's Day '76 was a splendid affair which featured a Mother Patroness ceremony for our long time friend and former advisor , Helen Corey. NU NU chapter, field representative Becky Wilson , chairman of advisors ; Terri Wright, and Kap · pa Kappa alumnae were on hand to help us celebrate . The Kappa Kappas served a luncheon of Swedich meatballs and assorted cold cuts to the guests . Many new friendships were made, old friendships were renewed, and the afternoon became a wonderful memory for all of the AEA members in attendance .

Money-making Pledges Throughout the semester the pledges of ALPHA PHI chap · ter at Northwest Missouri State College conducted various activities to raise money. Some of the more successful items in· eluded egg begging, pop bottle collecting, and raffles . With this money they were able to take an in-town pledge skip, an out-of-town pledge skip to Des Moines, buy a present for the activities and prepare a chili supper . Philanthropic projects have included the March of Dimes. United Way, and working with the mentally retarded . We also Christmas caroled at a nursing home.

Busy Fall for Pledges The past few months have been very full and exciting for the CHI CHIS of Ball State University. Fall pledges rang bells over the campus to collect money for the Salvation Army. Our Founder's Day was celebrated with a brunch prepared by the alumnae for the active chapter. This set the atmosphere for chats and laughter of past memories throughout the years. A senior banquet is being planned for the seniors along with another banquet that will include the entire sorority.

The pledges of BETA DELTA at the University of Southern Mississippi cooked a spaghetti dinner for the actives and called it an "Alpha Pig-out". The pledges also assisted as Towel Girls in the school basketball games. The pledges performed a touching ceremony for the Founder's Day banquet which was held at the Holiday Inn.

Exciting Pledge Activities This fall pledge activities for BETA EPSILONS at Madison College were unusual a nd exciting this past semester . The pledges planned many activities including a breakfast and play for the sisters, a gathering for a sister's cello recital and a Bible reading at sunrise. To culminate their pledge period the girls donated a terrarium to the chapter room . Beta Epsilon celebrated Founder's Day in a simple ceremony before our meeting. The ceremony stressed the importance ol our sisterhood and the vows we took at initiation . Our major philanthropic project is sponsoring the Pleasant View Home for the Aged located in Broadway, Virginia. The members have given money and time in an effort to refurbish the home.

Chapter Founder Attends The BET A ETAS of Dickinson State College held Founder's Day celebrations at the K C Club . Approximately 25 people including guest of honor , Mother Patroness Leila Woods attended these ceremonies . Miss Woods is also the founder of the Beta Eta chapter . Participating in the actual ceremonies was Lyla Safely, Dawn Dullum , and Nancy Tamayo.

Halloween Party As its philanthropic project the BET A THETAS of Central Michigan University went to the Masonic Home in Alma for the annual Halloween party. Accompanying the Beta Thetas were the Sigma Chis who provided entertainment in the form of a 6'6" gorilla. A skit was given by a box of Raisin Bran and the raisins · · our own pledges. Founder's Day was celebrated at the Coldwater Inn . Mter a delicious buffet dinner, Karen Martin , a Beta Theta alumna, spoke about the alumnae contribution to collegiate chapters. Jean B. Mayhew presented chaplain Jane Terry with the scholarship award for out· standing achievement. A week later the Beta Thetas got 'together again for Dinner Dance at the Dougherty Hotel in Clare. The chapter also had its semi-annual house party at Kalcaska to get everyone together one last time for a weekend of fun .

P. J. Party The BETA IOTA pledges of Radford College held a p .j . party for the sisters. an intellectual aim and a money making project. Founder's Day was celebrated with a special banquet.

The guest speaker spoke on Alpha's Creed. The banquet con· eluded with a skit and the special Founder's Day ceremony to commemorate our founding . During the fall of the BIS has to say good-bye to our advisor, Mrs. Einstein , whom we have grown to love dearly and will always consider a special Alpha person .

Pledge Activities BET A MU chapter at Henderson State University enjoyed many pledge activities. During football season the pledges made signs and tags for pep rallys. The Spirit Stick was won by our sorority several times. For a money making project pledges set up a booth during homecoming week. They had a mud -slide ; charging 25 cents for anyone who wanted to watch them slide in the messy mud . Some people even paid extra to see a member of their choice slide! Pledges stole one item per member and brought the items to the meeting. These items were sold back for a maximum of fifty cents . We celebrated Founder's Day by wearing red and white ribbons and having a formal ceremony in the evening .

Sold Bumper Stickers The BET A NU fall pledge class at Murray State University was really wound up this fall! They had their own retreat , sold bumper stickers "AIA -- You Be You , I'll Be Me," had a slave day sale, kidnapped their Big Sis, had a mixer for all the sororities on campus and went to football games together . One of the pledges, Sherrie Townsend , was a finalist in the Mi_ss Murray State Pageant . Founder's Day was once agam celebrated by a ceremony and dance .

Kidnapped!

The GAMMA ZETA pledges at the University of Arkansas at Monticello had a very active pledge period this fall. One activity included kidnapping all the pledges and taking them to the Pizza Hut for pizza. The pledges, in turn, kidnapped some of the members. We celebrated Founder's Day with a tea to which everyone was invited. A short intersorority ceremony was held to commemorate our founding before our guests arrived . We had two Christmas parties this year. One was held at the Camelot Inn in Little Rock , Arkansas. There we had a banquet for members, neophytes, alumnae, and dates. The other party was held in two of our members' apartment. We enjoyed a potluck supper and exchanged Christmas gifts.

Hectic Fall for Pledges Fall pledge activities for the BET A SIGMAS at Southwest Missouri State University included a pledge dance, a fraternity slave sale, a house take -over, song and skit practices, selling mums for Parent's Day, building the homecoming float , mixers with fraternities and a pledge sponsored Panhellenic pizza party. Other activities included an all sorority picnic that brought girls together , a hayride in the fall and a Christmas dance to end the year. Our Founder's Day celebration was an impressive ceremony held at our sorority house. In the past we have had our ceremony at our AIA National Headquarters along with local alumnae and BI members.

This year our chapter was honored by the presence of our President Emeritus, Wilma Wilson Sharp .

Show Off"

It is traditional with BETA UPSILON at Indiana State University to "show off' the new pledges by taking them out immediately after pledging. The usual meeting place is a local restaurant or pizza parlor. To get the pledges involved as soon they were encouraged to help organize and carry out open rush activities. In addition, the pledges seemed to take a great delight in pulling minor pranks on initiated members. Philan thropic projects for fall included selling magazines for our national philanthropic and collecting for UNICEF at Halloween . For Founder's Day members wore colored ribbons to signify the founding . In the evening Beta Upsilon had a candlelight ceremony in the chapter meeting room .

Pledge Program The 1976 fall pledge program for BETA PHI chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Stout consisted of pledge meetings, pledge bags , pledge pins , pledge books, "dates" and an "Alpha Week. " Each pledge was required to have a "date"with each active in each of the following categories : study, social/ physical, spiritual and coke dates. The Alpha week consisted of Church Sunday, Faculty Date Night , Study Day, and Turn About Day.

This year the GAMMA lOT AS of Rochester Institute celebrated Founder's Day in a different way. Instead of holding a formal cocktail party, the house gave a Luau . All the members helped in decorating the basement of the house by contributing plants and other decorations including painted murals that covered two 12' long walls. The celebration included a huge birthday cake for Alpha Sigma Alpha. Each year Gamma Iota Gives a Senior Dinner for all of our graduating members. All the members chip in and fmance •.he seniors' dinners and pay for their own.

Thanksgiving Food Drive The GAMMA LAMBDAS of Loyola University held a Thanksgiving food drive for needy families which turned out to be a tremendous success . Founder's Day '76 was celebrated by decorating a table in the student union . Throughout the day we celebrated by leaving cookies and other goodies on the table. The fall pledge class had quite a few activities. They participated in bake sales and a food drive held by the members. They held a party for the actives- and renovated our sorority boards. The pledges were often active in representing AIA during intramural sports.

Pledge Skits •

The pledges of GAMMA MU chapter at Adrian College gave two skits for the actives . The first was on Alumnae Day and the second at the annual Christmas party. They also placed little signs on the actives' doors wishing them Merry Christmas or just wishing them a good week. In addition they woke the actives for breakfast and took the members to din ner. Each year we plan a Senior Picnic. At this time the seniors present the sorority with a present.

Nursing Home Visit In December the members of GAMMA PSI at Edinboro State College visited San Rosario Nursing Home in Cambridge Springs and sang Christmas carols for the residents. Our sweetheart , Rick Pererson , dressed up as Santa Claus and one of the members dressed as an elf. We made favors for the residents and encouraged them to sing along with us . Our senior send-off was held on December 14. As always it was a very tearful occassion. Each of the four members who were leaving held a lighted candle and explained what sisterhood had meant and would continue to mean to her.

Exercise Time!

A few highlights from the fall pledge activities at GAMMA OMICRON chapter at Clarion State College included exercises and recreational dancing in the halls initiated by the pledges, a special ceremony featuring Big Sisters and their new Littles reading poems to the other members about the special meanings of Alpha Sigma Alpha, and a huge Raggedy Ann doll presented to the members to be displayed in the lounge. Founder's Day Celebrations included a dinner at the Holiday Inn and a special ceremony which reflected on the special anniversary. This fall our chapter conducted two philanthropic projects. The last weekend in October we held our annual Halloween party for Clarion area Disadvantaged children. The A'I.As and children all dressed in costumes. There were prizes , games and refreshments for all . Our second project was Christmas caroling in front of a department store for Children's Hospitals. Whether people gave to stop our singing or because they liked it was never decided. However, just one hour of caroling in sub-zero weather produced almost $50. Additional collect¡ ing boosted the total to over $75 .

SPRING 1977

Fall Activities DELTA ETAS at De Paul University celebrated Founder's Day with a small party with food and song. The pledges and actives were kept busy with a roller skating party, Thanksgiving dinner , Christmas formal , dances, mixers , the pledge Christmas party for the actives and the kidnapping.

Philanthropic projects consisted of a visit to a home for the elderly where games, prizes, food and entertainment were provided . Our annual food drive gave a little extra to the needy families in our area for Thanksgiving . Delta Etas also gave blood or donated their services to help the Red Cross Blood Program. Large scale plans are underway to sponsor an all night Dance Marathon with proceeds going to Miseracordia Home for the Mentally Retarded Children . Delta Eta is combining forces with De Paul's Program Council on this project .

Homecoming Breakfast Fall quarter kept the pledges of DELTA LAMBDA at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University busy with a variety of activities . One of the highlights of the fall pledge activities was a breakfast organized by the pledges for members and visiting alumnae. The pledges also sent the actives on a scavenger hunt which was followed by a p.j. party at two of the active's apartment. On Founder's Day members of Delta Lambda attended services at a local church . We then gathered for a delicious pot-luck luncheon which was followed by the Founder's Day ceremony. Delta Lambda has been busy assisting Panhellenic with several philanthropic activities. We conjured up goblins for the Panhellenic-Interfraternity Council Haunted House for the children of Blacksburg. For Christmas, instead of exchanging gifts, each sorority contributed to the Montgomery County Mental Health Association.

Combined Celebration

1n Michigan The DELTA NU chapter at General Motors Institute celebrated Founder's Day on November 13 . It was an excellent opportunity for the two Delta Nu chapters, A and B sections, to get together . The celebration was held at at nearby restaurant where the Alpha Sigs enjoyed a delicious meal.

Following the luncheon, two of our seniors, Sandy Huelsman and Cindy Peterson , were thanked and honored for their con tributions to the sorority. The alumnae presented flowers to the girls.

Unusual Founder's Day As usual Founder's Day for DELTA XIS at Dallas Baptist College fell on Homecoming weekend. However, this year there was an unusual twist. Snow fell to help celebrate both Homecoming and Founder's Day. On Founder's Day we each renewed our vows and thought about what it meant to each of us individually. It was a memorable time for each of us in volved. We are now looking forward to aiding the Oak Cliff Jaycees with Special Olympics in the spring.

Overnight Camp Out One of the highlights for both the actives and pledges of DELTA KAPPA chapter at Indiana State University of Evansville was an overnight camp out at one of the active's river camp. The purpose of this activity was to help the actives and pledges to get to know each other better. The chapter also sponsored ISUE's first all sorority party. The purpose of the party was to gave all the other sororities meet our new pledges and promote goodwill among the sororities. We also had several mixer parties with fraternities on campus. On Founder's Day the chapter had a banquet at a local cafe . Pledges, actives and their families were present . The evening also included a ceremony commemorating the sorority's founding .

One philanthropic project was the chapter's annual Alpha Sigma Alpha -- WJPS Halloween Candy Drive. WJPS radio station broadcasts the drive live over the air for four days .

Candy is donated by the community and our ~ chapter bags the candy and distributes it to hospitals and rehabilitation ::enters for children who are not able to go "trick-or-treating. "

Panhellenic Skit The first group project for the ZETA ZETA pledges of Central Missouri State University was a skit performed as a group for Panhellenic. For Halloween our pledges organized a philanthropic project at the Higginsville State School for the mentally retarded. Our sorority and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity dressed in costumes and had an enjoyable party with the patients. Later in the term our pledges organized their social function with the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity .

Our sorority and the AKA's played football at the fraternity complex field. For Founder's Day our chapter had a banquet at the Putle Springs Lodge. We had a ceremony after dinner.

We held our sorority philanthropic project with the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. This project was a Christmas party for underprivledged children which was held at the TKE house.

WHO'S WHO? This national officer, who is only 28 years old , has aiready. held six major posltlons for Alpha Sigma Alpha on a national level. They have included : field representative , province director , feature editor and spotlight editor of THE PHOENIX , national rush chairman and now vice president of development. A kindergarten teacher interested in camping, horseback riding, tennis and crewel work , this energetic and talented individual is also proudly listed in the 1974 edition of "Outstanding Young Women of America ." The challenging duty of writing the history of Alpha Sigma Alpha fell to -this woman . A Beta Epsilon from Madison College, this individual presently works as a counselor in Leesburg, Virginia.

The responsibilities of scholarship chairman , national editor , standard chairman and constitution chairman have been accomplished by her. Today she is serving in a dual role as historian and national secretary. Who is she ?

Another Virginian , this Southern belle played a major role in the '76 Convention in Williamsburg, Va . Especially active in the Richmond Alumnae Chapter , this officer also served on the national level as constitution chairman , secretary and now standards chairman . She is employed as the secretary-treasurer for the Hawkins-Hamilton Company in Richmond. Who is she?

Vi Brewer A'I.A's Hole-In-One Champ There aren't many golfers, even those who eat, drink and sleep the sport, who can relate much personal experience to the topic of holes-in-one .

Vi Brewer can. Known as "Sis," the former National Ritual Chairman and National Secretary is of a rare breed. Sis has had not one, not two , but three aces in the last five years.

"It's a little bit uncanny ," says Sis, understandably not knowing what to say . All of her holes-in-one have come at the Crestview Country Club in Wichita , Kansas on different holes. The first came on September 2, 1971 , on the 112 yard , No. 3 hole. "I thought it was luck, " she said . That is a "feat which is supposed to happen to only a few persons once in a lifetime ."

The second occurred on March 5, 1972 on the No. 8 , a 100-yard par 3. Then the latest came on June 20 , 197 6 on one of the toughest par 3s for women at Crestview, the 147 -yard No. 8. "I had some very good witnesses ," she says. "And they were different for each hole. " "I dont know what it is . All of them (shots) were going toward the pin. It's just luck that they went in. " A member of the Psi Psi Chapter of Northwestern State College in Louisiana , Sis was also

a member of the Tulsa and Wichita alumnae groups. But then Sis Brewer grew up as an Alpha Sigma Alpha. "I come from a long family of A'i..As. " Holes-in-one do occur with some regularity. In 1969, more than 19,000 of them were recorded in the United States .

"What Mrs. Brewer has done is very odd ," said Crestview assistant pro Mario Renteria . Mr. Ren teria is a low handicap golfer but in his 15 years of competition , he has neither scored an ace, nor seen one .

"Nobody out here has done anything like what she has done ," he said. "The odds are just a billion to one. It's just damn lucky -- I don't think anyone could ever do something like that again ."

Sis Brewer takes it it stride. " It's kind of weird , but I don 't complain about it. I have a friend in Topeka who has four of them and another friend in Wichita who had two this year. " I doubt if I will ever get another one," she said , "but I said that after the first two."

So for Alpha Sigma Alpha Sis Brewer , number four might just be on its way.

The Chi Chi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha celebrated the 40th anniversary of its charter at Ball State University, Muncie , Indiana , on Oc tober 16 , 1976. One hundred thirty two collegiate and alumnae had lunch and shared in joyous reunions at a local church immediately following the Homecoming Parade.

In the fall of 1928, the charter for the Chi Chi Chapter was originally granted to Phi Delta Psi (local) at Teachers College of Indianapolis. Mary Turner Gallagher (now deceased) and Helen Selvage Noblitt went to Denison University, Granville , Ohio, to be initiated in Alpha Sigma Alpha by the Upsilon Upsilon Chapter. Mrs. Gallagher was to serve as the advisor for the new sorority.

When Teachers College of Indianapolis became the College of Education of Butler University the charter was temporarily withdrawn, only to be later placed at Ball State University on December 12 , 1936. Members of the original charter , in addition to Mary Gallagher and Helen Noblitt , included Helen Emick, Jane Foltz McDavitt , Letha Heckman Gaskins, Bernice Lamb; Eloise Proctor , Genevieve Leib Foltz and Wilma Wolf.

Mrs. L.H. Whitcraft (now deceased) served as advisor at Ball State . She and June Wilkinson Widmyer had gone to Breezy Point, Minnesota, in the summer of 1936 and were initiated at the National Convention of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Alumnae members from Indianapolis came to Muncie to give rush parties and to assist with the installation. Miss Evelyn G. Bell , National President from Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs .

Genevieve S. Leib Foltz, National Editor from In dianapolis, were the installing officers. June Wilkinson Widmyer served as the President of the new chapter.

In addition to Mrs. Whitcraft and Mrs. Wid myer, the following signed the newly placed charter and all are believed to be living: Velma Haines Thresher, Helen Reed Pennington , Martha Stuckey Glentzer, Grace Richey Rankin, Margaret Work, Ruth Bickel McFall , Kathleen Darrow Salzer , Irma Grieve Thieman, Edna Quivey Staley, Marjorie Harper Harader, Florence Howe Notestine, Marjorie Hutchens Scott, Delores Karr , Maribel Marshall Coates, Thelma Waltz Zumbaugh, Margaret Allen Diebert, Alice Jane Baker Ulrey , Vera Hughes Land, Betty Huston Miller, Jean Mitchell Maze, Mildred Teaney Havens, Dorothy Wiley Mayne, Anna Marie Yates Bull and Mildred Hartman Collier .

To date, there are more than 1000 initiated in to this 40-year old chapter. Displays of scrap books, trophies and maps showing where all the initiated members live were of great interest to .many at the luncheon.

Alumnae Action Lillian Ford Donnelly, Editor The AKRON alums have been busy with their numerous workshops in hopes to sponsor four retarded youths to be the Special Olympics and to donate money to a residential facility for the moderately retarded . Karen Frame Karpinski fM has been busy designing sorority stationery to sell . The Founders' Day luncheon was the scene of a scarf-mitten collection which was to be distributed to children at the Summit County Children's Home as pan of a Panhellenic drive. The following day , Cristy Bauer rM and Lil Greer M traveled to Miami University to celebrate Founders' Day with members of Alpha Alpha. Several members attended the Akron Association Children's Home Ball. A Christmas party was held at the home of the alumnae president, Janice Cargal Burlovich AA. Members enjoyed the luncheon , workshop , and auction of Christmas tree ornaments . At the fall meeting in Finnerty's Country Squire, a bakeless cake sale added money to the Philanthropic Fund of the BOSTON alums. Notes were read from Doris M . Keene, Gerry Cox NN, Ruth Mayo, Ingeborg Swenson, Edie Lundquist, Hazel Vaux , Marion Folsom , Kay Kennedy, Edith Howlett , and Emeline Heath . Alums welcomed Joy Danilowicz E. and Mozelle Porter Kooy Bl. The CALUMET REGION alums met in workshops to make birthday gifts for residents of the local convelescent home whom they have adopted as their Philanthropic Project .

Alums also welcomed Chris Korkorian BE to the chapter.

Members from the Ball State University area aided in the assembly of a United States directory map which was displayed at the school's homecoming activities in October. This was the fortieth anniversary of ALA on the campus and the project allowed members Barb Shaner Conaway, Cathy Slanac Wesley, Sue Ferguson Yerkes , Judy Hallet, Barb Obrecht Dye to gather and celebrate ol' times. CHICAGO METRO's fall activities ranged from a hayride to a spaghetti dinner to a ski weekend . Alums are now in the planning stages for the Spring Special Olympics which members will help to organize for the town of Sauk Village . Members collected greeting cards to send overseas to charitable organizations to use in craft projec路 ts .

CHICAGO WEST SUBURBAN alums eagerly looked forward to their Christmas meeting at the home of Julia Palmer A and Mary Sue Parvin A when they learned the names of their secret pals . The January meeting was held at the home of Judy Matusek Watson Bn. Members saw a movie on Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking. Later winter meetings included one on transcendental meditation, and a featured speaker from the DuPage County Forest Preserve District. Members have already started to collect articles for the June garage sale. Other money raising projects will include selling stationery and participating in new product surveys.

CINCINNATI ALUMNAE OBSERVED Founders' Day at an open house hosted by the Alpha Alpha Chapter, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Ann Petree Neimeyer AA was hostess for the December Philanthropic Business meeting.

Alums became busy Santa helpers and wrapped fifty-five preschool toys for the children of the Resident Home for the

Mentally Retarded . A tip of Santa's cap to Karen Bader AA for a successful philanthropic project . In January alums and husbands enjoyed a Monte Carlo night hosted by Mary Hoeke Backsman AA . During the February meeting the alums viewed the facilities at the Resident Home for the Menatlly Retarded .

The DAYTON alums began the year with a fall luncheon .

Beverly Ayles, Madeline Knost , Helen Swart and Audrey Gedart shared pictures, momentos and memories from their trip to National Convention in june. Audrey Gedart hosted members to a luncheon in her home in October. Alums en 路 joyed a piant party with proceeds being donated to the chapter. In October, nine members of the FORT LAUDERDALE alumnae enjoyed the Panhellenic Luncheon featuring a fashion show , with one alum winning the gift certificate presented by Kappa Kappa Gamma alumnae. Members combined Founders' Day with a money-making project at the home of Ethel Llewellyn Wilson ~ - Betty Baringer Barnes NN arranged for the "Tupper Ware" lady to take orders during the project so the chapter could raise money. Alums regretted to lose Evelyn Livdur Berryman AA when she moved to North Carolina.

Alums of MARYVILLE began the fall with a dessert -bridge at the home of alumnae president, Mary Ethel Oliver Pugh .

In November , members entertained Phi Phi chapter to a bingo party. At the same time , they celebrated Founders' Day together. Seventy members attended. Members were saddened to hear of Mrs. Nell Martindale Kuch's death . MILWAUKEE alums celebrated Founders' Day with the presence of province director , Silvana Richardson ; long, unseen members ; old sorority songs ; and a "flaring" birthday cake . Members are now working with the 81 and rB members in planning State Day in Milwaukee for spring.

MORAINE AREA Founders' Day ceremonies were conducted by president Karyn Tritsch Holmes fX at the home of Kathleen Geib Boykin AA _ Kathy gave members a tour of Mexico by slides and a taste of Mexico with a lunch of enchaladas and avocadi salad . Karen Wilson Morris fX who moved to Colorado will be missed by alums. In December a gift exchange was held. Pat Derikart ro -had many inventive craft ideas. Several alumnae joined the members of Gamma Xi Chapter at their Christmas Party for the Butler Children's Rehabilitation Center. At least one member of Gamma Xi at tended each alumnae meeting and their advisor Kathy Boykin is one of the alumnae chapter's charter members. Alumnae also made refreshments for and attended several formal college rush parties.

MURRAY alums and Beta Nu pledges after a SOS ceremony at Murray State University : Marilyn Marshall Bryan, Shirley Thompson, Chris Williams Thompson, Pam Allcock, Debbie Jones Bell, Donna jones Stinson, Carolyn Lowe Sparks, Connie Lampkin, Wood, Khadra Cain Turley, Scottie Hina, Mary julia Waldrop, and Melanie Wilson Kelly.

In October, the MURRAY Alumnae Chapter and the Beta Nu pledge class met for a SOS (Slightly Older Sis) Ceremony. Each alum and pledge were introduced and matched . Activities included conferences between the SOS and pledge, card sending, Christmas Party, and the SOS was on hand for the pledge's initiation. Murray alums were pleased to welcome Sue Gardner McLemore BN into the chap· ter. Eighteen members including several new ones attended the November meeting which was highlighted by a White Elephant Sale. Plans were made to co-5ponsor a Read-A-Thon with the Mayfield Mental Retarded Association in February to raise money for the J .U. Kevil Mental Health Mental Retardation Center.

The OMAHA Alumnae Chapter celebrated Founders' Day with a meal and a program presented by the officers . Christmas ornaments made by the members were auctioned , with Lois Lechner as hostess at the Christmas Party. An appetizer was brought by each member and a book containing these recipes was distributed. PITTSBURGH, Kansas alumnae en· tertained the new Eta Eta pledges with a pledge coke party at at the home of Betty Farrimond's :::=: home. A Founders' Day celebration was held in conjunction with members at the chapter house . Mter the ceremony and skit , both collegiate members and alums enjoyed snacks prepared by the alumnae chapter. Beverly Tustin :::=: hosted the annual Pittsburg Alum nae Chapter's Christmas party. Alumnae members brought an eatable "goody" along with the recipe.

The RICHMOND alumnae Chapter met at the home of Joanne Beaver Lee BE for October. Members prepared for Madison College's AI.A Boutique. Christmas ornaments, pin and napkin rings were made to be donated to help Beta Ep silon Chapter earn money at their sale. Founders' Day brought alumnae together for an evening of dinner and conversation . ·The excitement of Christmas and meeting national president, Betty Wallick brought members to the home of Nita Hodgnett Chandler BE in December. November and December Can· dlelights celebrated the news that Judy· Garrette Bryant BE and Loretta Lewis Ross BE were expecting babies. A German Christmas dinner was prepared and enjoyed by the

Each member prepared a dish native to Germany; dishes included German cheeses and crackers, sauerbraten, German potato salad, sauerkraut salad, cucumber salad, pumpernickel bread and butterscotch torte . Following the meal , Becky Oliver strummed out German Christmas songs while Amy Kelly Struck BE, Debbie Highson , Cindy Wilkins Fielder BE, Kathy Fries, and Lili Byers sang along.

Helen Shaw's program and illustrations of her work "Dressing the Movie and TV Stars" was excellent. Alums welcomed new member Jean Lenz Fuller KK . Fifty members were also honored . The Christmas Party was held at the Sun City Country Club .
