Gratiot Inn, on U.S. 25, five miles North of Port Huron is a distinguished resort hotel of Miss ion architecture. There are many broad porches directly overlooking Lake Huron. Many comfortable chairs under beautiful trees afford a restful environment and it is thrilling to watch the big freight boats sailing by on their way to or from the locks at Sault Ste. Marie . To count the boats alone is quite a day's occupation .

Right in front of the Inn is a splendid sand bathing beach . Swimming is delightful in the Blue Waters of Lake Huron . A life guard is on duty.

From Gratiot Inn one can see across to Canada to the town of Sarnia . Linking Canada and the United States at Port Huron and Sarnia is the beautiful Blue Water Bridge.

This is the popular gateway between Michigan and Ontario, Canada . Below the huge span the blue waters of Lake Huron flow into . St. Clair River and lake steamers pass in a never ending parade during the navagation season .

It is about a twenty minute ride over to Sarnia . The car and drivers licenses of the driver are all that is needed. to make this trip.

For those without cars there are busses that run acrG>ss the bridge and cute little boats that make the trip about every twenty minutes .

Sarnia is a factory town but there are a few interesting shops . Don't get your hopes up unless you plan to spend three days in Can-

ada because all you can bring back to the igan and Ontarit, Canada. Below the huge fun to go and " look" just the same .

Michigan is famous for its fine highways.

Most of them are concrete highways built for speed and safety . They are well marked and easy to follow . As the traveler passes al ong smooth riding roads beautiful scenes of forests, lakes and streams come into view.

Throughout Michigan the State Highway Department has built many beautiful roadside parks, where one may stop for a delightfully fresh drink of water, a rest and perhaps a picnic lunch . Hundreds of scenic turnouts and table sites also serve the traveler.

If you are planning to drive to Convention , time may be an important item to you . Experienced travelers usually allow three hours for each 100 miles . This includes driving

HISTORY OF MICHIGAN

MICHIGAN

A state in the North Central part of the United States; bounded by Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ontario. It was admitted to the Union January 26, 1837.

This region was first visited by Jean Nicolet in 1634 at Sault Ste . Marie where Father Jacques Marquette made the first permanent white settlement in 1668 . In 1671 the Mission of Michimackinac was founded at St. Ignace.

French settlements were also made at Mackinaw and Green Bay and in 1700 Detroit became the seat of a French colony under Antoine de Ia Mothe Cadillac. The country passed to the Eng! ish at the end of the French and Indian War, and during the war of the Indians under Pontiac for the extermination of the whites the garrison of Mackinaw was butchered and Detroit suffered a long siege .

The country was held by the Eng! ish after the close of the Revolution and was delivered to the Americans in 1796. Michigan became a portion of the Northwestern Territory and in 1802 was annexed to the Territory of Indiana.

On January 11, 1803, it was set aside as a separate territory. It suffered severly during the War of 1812. Detroit and Mackinaw being captured by the British, and the territory was held till the successes of the Americans in 1813 . During the latter part of the eighteenth century and the early part of the nineteenth, there were frequent raids by the Indians and the English, and massacres and burnings prevented the territory from progressing rapidly.

However, a valuable fur trade was carried on at Mackinaw Island, and in 1808 the American Fur Co. was founded by John Jacob Astor.

In 1818 all the region North of Illinois and Indiana was incorporated with Michigan . In 1838 Lansing succeeded Detroit as the Capitol.

The Vacation Lanrl Unique

No trip to Michigan is c'omplete without a visit to Dearborn-a delightful spot just l 0 miles West of the center of Detroit.

Why is Dearborn of such great interest?

Dearborn is famous first, because Henry Ford established the great world famous Rough River plant of the Ford Motor Company there.

A trip through this plant, which takes about an hour, is really a worthwhile experience .

GREENFIELD VILLAGE shou.ld be on the "must" list for all visitors to Michigan. Here one finds the complete collection of Edison's works, the office Abraham Lincoln used and many other historical buildings. Be sure to see the clock on the jewelry store when the figures perform on the quarter hour. The great museum, a rep! ica of Independence Hall, in which the history of transportation is only one feature, covers eight acres. The admission to the museum is 50 cents and to the Village 50 cents. Both are together. Plan at least two to three hours for this trip. Both these trips must be done on foot-they are well worth it. Greenfield Village is known as "the greatest tourist attraction in the middle west."

A quarter of a mile from Greenfield Village is Dearborn Inn. We hope that you will have the privilege of spending at least one night in this beautiful Georgian Manor.

The welcome you receive at the Dearborn Inn is in the great tradition of early American hospitality. From the moment you enter the stately Georgian doorway you observe and approve its difference.

Many things contribute to the Inn's atmosphere . The lovely old style of the interior decorations. The framed samplers and Currier and lves prints on the walls. The faithful

The liveable Colonial Homes which you con occupy-replicas of houses that stand in history as well as on the grounds of Dearborn Inn-Edgar Allen Poe House, Barbaro Fritchie to mention just two of them .

The Canada Steamship Line Provides service between Buffalo and Detroit, there is a boot leaving Buffalo each night at 5 o'clock arr iving in Detroit 5 o'clock in the morning, returning from Detroit 5 p. m., arriving in 路 Buffalo at 8 a . m.

Transportation for a cor aboard this steamer is $12.95 each way, plus 3% tax. One way passage fore is $7 .25 and the round trip fore is $13 .75. Staterooms run from $4.50 for a corridor stateroom, $6.00 for on outside stateroom, $7.25 for a room with toilet and $8.50 for a room with toilet and shower.

There ore 6-doy cruises on the Canada Steamship Line leaving Detroit each Friday going to Duluth and return. The rote for this trip will run from $82.20 to $119.20, .plus 15% tax.

May we present Joan Hughes our new chapter president and convention delegate. Joan was president of her pledge group and a freshman representative on the Student Council last year. She has just served a s vice-presjdent of Alpha and secretary of the Biology Club.

High scholastic standing seems to go hand in hand with Joan ' s fun, for she is an "A " student and has done her share in attaining the Panhellenic schol arship award .

Our new president, Norma Gay, wi II represent us at the house party convention. Norma truly has that Alphasigmality which makes people happy to know her. She has many wo nderful ideas and we are sure she will help us in Theta Theta to have a successful year.

Our Claire has personality and enthusiasm for Al:A matched by none. She is president of the University Panhellenic Association as well as Kappa Kappa 's Registrar.

She belongs to just about every campus organization and is very active in most of them. She can keep everyone happy and (most important) working in Alpha Sigma Alpha . We send all our chapter' s love and best wishes to convention with Claire.

Pat Tralle, Xi Xi's delegate, has been active in both sorority and campus activities. She has served this past year as Xi Xi 's registrar and as our chapter ' s representative on Panhellenic Council. Pat has also been busy with the YWCA activities at UCLA. She will graduate this June.

The dark-haired beauty who will nex t year be president of Pi Pi chapter, 11 Dee" Goldsmith, is our delegate to the national convention.

Dee is a junior in the Art Education department and this year served as our v ery capable registrar.

Dee- is a mighty active girl but not too busy to serve as assistant librarian in her town library.

Jane Earl Johnson is Beta Nu ' s official delegate to the National Convention. The girls of Beta Nu considered her tops in leadership when they selected her as president.

Jane is a music student, majoring in voice. She is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Vivace Club, Acoppella Choir, and has been in the two b ig mus icals of the year.

She is secretary-treasurer of the Wells Hall Council, secretary of the sophomore class, acti ve in the Wesley Foundation , and a member of the French Club.

Elay ne Stilwell, the delegate from Rho Chi chapter, for the national con vention is now a junior in the college of education ," is majoring in early elementary education, hoping to teach kindergarten.

In the Rho Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Ela yne Stilwell has held the office of vice-president and at the present time is our chapter chaplain. Elay ne was the president of her pledge group .

She is majori ng in Music Education and she is a jun ior. She is president of the Young Women 's Christian Association , member of Student Counci l, Women ' s Hall Council , Future Teachers of America, college choir, and string ensemble.

Pays Tribute to Mr. B. F. Leib路

The sudden death of Mr. Leib on April 7th brought sadness to the hearts of hundreds of Alpha Sigma Alphas. To many Alpha Sigmas he was a cherished~ personal friend affectionately called "Frank." To a larger number of college and alumnae members, he was the generous husband of our beloved National Editor, Genevieve S. Leib, whose talents and affections he graciously shared with A~A. But, Mr . Leib's interest in our fraternity was more than a vicarious one . He was often a wise and helpful adviser to national officers who had respect for his business ability and sought his highly valued judgment. He was a good fraternity man, _ having been initiated into Kappa Sigma, at the University of Michigan of which he was a graduate, so his attitude on fraternity matters was sympathetic but exacting.

The tribute paid to Mr. Leib by Dr. George Arthur Frantz, minister of the First Presbyterian Church of lndianapol is and a personal friend of many years, is printed here for Phoenix readers. Alpha Sigma Alphas will read it with -deep gratitude and affectionate regard . In it will be found added assurance that Mr. Leib's friendship and helpfulness will be a lasting benefit to Alpha Sigma Alpha and to all who knew him .

"We read a man's character in the kind of words which offer themselves to describe our memories of him at a time like th is. A whole host of good words are waiting, eager to speak _our grateful thoughts about what Frank Leib means to us and has meant to us through these many blessed years .

"Cheerful' 1 and "encouraging"-these words recall greetings, when we were walking in shadows, and just to meet him was to find light and the assurance that we had a friend . 路 "Fidel ity"-that word comes to remind us that we' trusted him and were never disappointed . " Courage" tells us how he bore his own burden, burned his own smoke and never darkened life for his friends with complainings. " Tender" is a word which brings shining memories for those who knew the intimacies of his home. 1-le loved his family. There his happiest hours were spent. They were his true treasure. ',, The long, best yea rs of his life were spent in a business whose whole purpose is to help men to bear each other's losses, and to go on with hope and confidence. His life was like his work, his work was his life .

Almost the last strength of his body he used to go to his -church to add his gift to the gifts of others for the feeding of God's hungry people in the world . He wanted to be present for that one great hour. " Sharing" is a fine word and it recalls so much that was finest in his life .

If he had a dread in his heart, it was the dread of the days when he could no longer share in the work he loved . Now our Lord has dealt beautifully with that dread . He was able to work to the very last . He will never know the dreaded days . He has gone on into the Kingdom of Love, where the blessed know only hours of joyful activity, where there is no sorrow, no pa in, and where all tears are wiped away. There the Lord' s servants serve Him and they see His face . The fear of idle years is past and gone forever . 路 For us who knew him dread of age is past, He took Iife tiptoe to the very last.

For him it never lost its lovely look; He kept his interest in its thr illing book.

To him death came no conqueror; in the end He merely smiled to greet anothe r friend . .He has passed on ahead of us up the steps of Iight-and so sha II he be forever with the Lord."

AKRON, OHIO Dear Alpha Sigs: Judy Brucken was the gracious hostess for our February meeting . Only a few brave souls ventured forth because of the heavy snowfall and slippery streets. Those of us who were brave enough to get out in such weather did so only because "frie nd husband" was kind enough to do the chauffeuring. So while we girls munched candy and discussed business in Judy's love ly living room before on open fire our husbands played hearts in the breakfast nook. These sacrificing moles even hod port in the refreshments. Aren't we ungrateful? The girls brought their contributions for the box to be sent to Mrs. Price at Indianapolis, Indiana , as port of the philanthropic work for Region II. Mrs. Price will see that the boxes will be delivered to the veterans at hospitals near there. Our March meeting was a dinner meeting at locominie's Restaurant. We hod Ruth Yauger as our guest-of- honor. Ruth comes to us from Mount Vernon, Ohi o. In Akron, she is the supervisor of home economics and school cafeterias. It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Akron Alumnae chapter welcomes Ruth. Every one is talkirg "conventi on." " Are you goi ng? It sounds li ke fun! I hope I can go." No definite plans hove been mod e in our own chapter, but we are certainly thinking about it.

ALVA, OKLAHOMA Dear Alumnae : You hove no idea how much joy it has been to receive your letters-fond memories and pleasant reminders of good times tc gether are real blessings. Gamma Gamma has ke pt its regular monthly meetings through the year even when transportation was impossib le with our rural ond neighboring members . Always the fait hful Alvo A'2-A met. At our lost meeting, Ma rch 12, we were made most glad and happy to hove Jane Clark Williamson with us. She has li ved in California many years and t his is her first meeting with us. Since the Christma s holidays we have leorned of the addresses of many former GG girl s. Erline has sent me some thirty-odd new addresses and married names. Thot brings me joy. Electa Lee Friedeu has just given us a new grandson-born lost wee k. Congratulations to her and Dale Friedeu. This son is lucky to hove su : h parents. Since this birth, the other new babies of Meredith Donley Hadwiges and Lola Wilson will toke a bock seat in olum :-~ i greeting for a while .

Spring is he re with us and a s usual the first Alumnae meet ing in April is our annual dinner for husbands.

This year it will be in very new Alva Club House. Every one is happy to be among the first to enjoy the privileges of the new Club House. Alva and the A.E.S. sororities are smiling, laughing and even telephoning the news that the North Central has admitted Northwestern, Northeastern and Southwestern Colleges at Alva, Tahlequah and Weatherford- and d id it unanimously. No bounds to the rejoicing.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAN D The Baltimore Alumnae chapter of A'2-A is proud to ha ve reached the status of a full-fledged chapter . P.lans to organize a chapter were started in November '48, by our present president, Margaret Banks, at her home on 3706 N. Charles St., but it wasn't until this March , when we met at the home of Natalie Russell, East 1002 Wilson Pt. Road, that we were large enough to carry out the plans. We've had lots of fun getting acquainted and find that our members come from all parts of the country, a s far south os Virg in ia , and a s far west as Kansa s and North Dakota . We' re looking forward to a lot of activity in our chapter. We want to be more than just a social group, although social activity will certainly have its place. Ideas have been pre ser~t ed that will keep us busy for some time, such as donating our time and services to aid in various drives, the Red Cross, Scouts, etc.; brightening the lives of hospital patients by donatting time for reading or ma ki ng small gifts; raising money for other worthwhile causes. Our plans must undergo a great d ea l of solidification, but we know the acti v ities in the chapter will be a source of great pleasure to each one of us. The Baltimo re chapter has held two official meetings, in March and Apr il. We spent a good bit of time getting acquainted, and we want to pass the info rmation on about our members. Margaret Wilson Bonks (BEl, our president, is busily engaged in holding a stenographic position and kee ping house. We are all grateful to Margaret for bringing us Alpha Sigs toget her. Mabe l Marshall Mathias (KK l, taught physical education before her marriage, now has a lovely home and two teen-age daughters . Natalie Edwa rds Russell (NN ) is o former home economics teacher at Drexe l Inst itute in Philadelphia . At present she is applying her knowledge in her own charming home. Hazel Oshant Taxacher (TTl, did stenography in Washington, D. C., before her marriage. She now has a five-year-old son.

Grace Williams Leedy (BH ) i5 a registered nurse and has found her training usefu l in ra ising her girl and baby boy. Doris Rice Meyers (NN ) is a home economist and participates in a television program dealing with home economics here in Ba ltimore. Da vilee Bryant (B E) attended school with Margaret Bon ks and is now doing stenographic work.

pleased and thought the initiation ceremonies quite effective. Later we held a dinner at the Hotel Lennox in order to meet and welcome the new sponsor of the Actives. On April 2, new officers were e lected : Irma is our new president; Charlotte Hadl ey, vice-president; Mary Bans ignor, secretary; and Ed ie Lundquist is still our treasurer. Our new scribe is Prissy Kelly. A few words of thanks go to Dot Currier for her grand work a s president this year. Among ou r women in the news is Irma Wrenn, who is our delegate to the conve ntion in August.

Beatrice Galloway made the Gracious Ladies column in one of our leading Boston papers, the " Bosto n Traveler."

Beatrice is now chairman of the Marblehead group of the Boston Red Cross Arts and Skills Corps. Ruth Fletcher and Gertrude Calvert were represe ntatives at a panel discussion of the Eastern Arts Association held at the Hotel Statler. Preparations for the June Pops meeting are now in progress . This being our last meeting before our summer vacation and conventions, we are hoping for a large turn out.

Convention Delegate Our April showers are finally rewarding us with the first signs of spring. Winter and summer have had their little skirmishes, and summer has finally won out with its robins, crocuses and even strawberries which cannot be beaten anywhere except in New England . Because of the beautiful weather, we were able to have our first out-of-doors cook at Betty Corney's cottage in Waltham .

The smell of an open fire, sizzling hamuburgers, hot coffee, ar:d toasted marshmallows, mingled with the fragrance of pine trees, is something you find only in our picturesque New England. Yes, we are quite boastful of our spring as well as our falls.

At this meeting we were entertained by Marie Therese Reverchon, our most charming French exchange teacher at Dorchester High, who is replacing Charlotte Adams, our sister, now teaching at the Lycee de Jeune Fille in Annecy, which is located near Swiss, Italian, French Alps. She spoke about interesting places in France and showed a collection of French pictures. One of the most amusing incidents of the year occurred after this meeting . As we were leaving, lngabord discovered that her car had a flat. Our charming hostess offered aid which was gracious ly received.

Together they toiled while we on the side lines gave them words of encouragement. Finally, the jack was removed and evc::ryone stared first is amazement and then in amusement; for if one flat tire can be flatter than an other, this was flatter than the first one. As we drove off about an hour later, Betty and lngabord were still feverjshly trying to fi x the flat with a bicycle pump .

During our February vacation, we were fortunate enough to be able to get in a threatre party by seeing the musical hit, " Ins ide U.S.A. " Laura McGuaid acted a s "Mom" by purchasing the tickets and seating all her children.

The chop suey dinner at Dot Currier's, prepared by our own connoisseurs of Chinese cooking, Dot, Evelyn Christianse n, and Anna Ravesi, proved another highlight in this year's soc ial events. Before dinner the girls spent time pla ying bridge and checkers. After dinner there was a White路 Elephant in the form of a blind auction . The auction included all articles from powder puffs to rubbers. For the first time, initiation was held in a private home, the home of Dot Currier. The girls were quite

Convention Delegate Dear Alpha Sigs : Curtain time on March 1, 1949, found us in Ruthie Swenson's living room watching a movie of a Weckerle Dairy. Mrs. Hoffman, their representative for this type of adverti sing program , suggested many new recipes using milk products as well as serv ing us a delicious "Weckerle dessert." And when Loi s Conroy, Connie Batt, Marion Clack, and Lass Finley won glasses of tasty cottage cheese a s door prizes, we all agreed trot it was certainly worth fifty cents . . . especial ly si nce the profit was added to our treasury. While the show was on, two people tip-toed in. They turned out to be Dorie Fisher and her charming fourteen year old daugh ter who later held us spell-bound with three soprano selections. Susan's talent and poise were incredible .

24 Ruth' s meeting was on a sub-zero evening , and those af you who know Buffalo will realize how hordy we were to trek to South Buffalo (anyway, that's what we told our South Buffalo-ites!l. During the meeting, we found out that the stork had been working overtime as you ' ll see further bac k in this magazine. Connie amazed us by reporting a thirty dollar profit for the month " just from odds and ends of cards, paper, and napkins." Lucky for us too, because Gig and Sandy announced thot City Panhelleni c will need a share of thot for th e ir new project of suppl yi ng books and records for the Crippled Ch ildren' s Hospital. By March 7th when the Directors met at Jean Vedder's, the conversation went like this " . . . and she had a dishpan full of money ... 10 phone calls in one evening ... wonderful way to get acquainted . . . " That's right, the Pyramid Clubs had invaded 'our city. However, it furnished lots of laughs and when the "small talk" had subsided, Mary Blackstone was all set up behind a card table ready for action . We had twentytwo reports from Directors and Chairmen of coming events, and the minute we heard "adjourned," Jean wal ked in with a tray of presents. Beli eve me, Ogden Nash was put to shame by the verses (? ) accompanying the gifts for Ev . Bell's surprise party. She really was surprised which made it even more fun when the birthday cake arrived. By then we were in such a party mood from "playing" with her gifts that we just didn't want to leave . The next meeting was one of the season's highlights, for Hildegarde Keyser opened her home to seventy-five people . Our Silver Tea on March 22 was guest night as we wonted to share Fron Hepinstall's tolk, "Today with Books," with mothers and friends .

She captivated everyone during her full review of "Point of No Return," ond a potpourri of at least twenty other books. Our guests were thrilled to hear and meet our inimitable "Heppy," and for us, too, it was a memorable n ight made possible through Alpha Sig. The teo committee, headed by Marion Munson, and assisted by Rita Lawler, Angela Hurley, Connie, Mary and Bunny, arranged the table to perfection . The sandwiches and cookies contributed by the Committee and the Directors were tasteful to the eye a s well as the palate . (I heard it rumored that the kitchen was the place to be that night, but I doubt if they had much of a head start on the rest of us !) Since my third floor apartment wos not equipped with "skyhooks," the Directors made their way to my mother's home on Morch 30. Joan Moore and Mory Tierney, our Card Party and Ticket Chairmen, awed us with the plans for May 4th . We'll have forty tables at the Kenmore YWCA and they soy nearly si xty door prizes ! Of these, a ceramic set made by Gig, and exquisite had-made jewelry contributed by Marian Thomas will tap the li st . With the further attraction of a Spring Fashion Show, we hope to over-flow our treasury so that we may increase the scope of our philanthrop ic activities.

Heard many comments on the "Food , Flower and Fashion Show," sponsored by the Buffalo Federation of Women's Clubs. Our sale of tickets netted Sorority five do llars, a s well a s providing a pleasant evening of tasting samples and viewing un ique flower arrangements.

Many of us were presented with pin k garden ia s or red roses merel y for wear ing blue dresses! Our City Panhellen ic is hav ing a spring party on April 27 , and since it will be th e fir st public appearance of our wh ole group, we' re already plann ing ways of putting that best fo ot fo rward . When you know her, you'll see why she 's our unanimous choice for Official Delegate . This led to Gratiot Inn plans, and we practically signed up by the car-full before taking time out for refreshments.

Since this is my last letter to you , I do want to say how much I hove enjoyed writing to all of you . (Even my husband says he'll miss editing "our" articles. ) It seems that Sue Marvin will be taking up the pen that I lay down, and I know you'll enjoy her sparkling interpretations of the Buffalo Alum activities .

Class of '45 Hi Everyone: Our 'Iii ole 45'ers surely have spread out across the U.S.A. Jeanne Schwarzmeir Thornton and Bill are in Branford, Connecticut. Bill is tudying for his doctorate at Yale. Schwarzy has been ill in bed most of the winter but she will have good news for us in the spring. Dee Merfer Rogde is also in New England, namely Machachusetts. She also has been ill but we hope she's better now. Ellen Jane Sturtevant is in San Diego, California .

Hubby " Stuts" is a Navy man . He cruises back and forth to Alaska 路regularly. Ellen, too, will have news for us soon . Ann Andrews Holl is another Navy wife . She bnd Jim were in Pensacola the last we heard. Janie Harris Kraham is still in Oneonta, New York. Via the usual grapevine, we heard Jane was teaching again . Pat Hansen Connolly is in Chester, Pennsylvania, and we will be hearing more news from her in the fu t ure. Betty Grever Morrison is in Laceyville, Pennsylvania , and also future news will be coming from her, and from Janet Gibbons Collins. The next news letter really should be a "newsie" one when all the future- "newsies" arrive.

Ruth Smith Riley and yours truly are still holding down the fort in this neck of the woods. Ruth and Bill came back to Allegany in December after three years in Rochester. Ruthie is quite the little homemaker, sewing , cooking new dishes, and enjoying the leisure time now that she is no longer teaching . Ruth Christman Sinensan, Bill and Melinda, are planning on starting their new home in May. How we envy them ! Congrats to Betty Triches Baeskel and Paul. Reed Paul is the new addition . He arrived in January.

The Alpha Sigs have been breaking into the news quite a bit lately, especially in pictures. Not long ago we saw a darling picture of Johanne Cunningham Miller and daughter, Sally. There was also a picture and writeup about our awn Dotty Fedigan . Dotty is assistant art supervisor at Buffalo State . In addition, s he's teaching modern dancing and we even heard she was also teaching an art class at night-whew! No wonder we don ' t see her around much . Marty Yeager's engagement picture was really lovely. The groom to be is Warren Tubbs, Jr . Marty has been teaching in the Park School. Ellen Davey Reichert has a New Yor k City address. We' re almost sure we spatted her in a picture of a summer stock show in "Holiday" magazine not long ago. ls' nt that something ! Then, too, Steinie has been giving up much of her free time to being a Grey Lady at the Sisters Hospital. She also attends night classes at U.B. for a masters. Alice Wincene is doing graduate work at Niagara U. in her free time. She is teaching in Niagara Falls. The latest report about "Winnie" was that someone saw her being "tal ked to" by a policeman for jay walking . Why, Miss Wincene!! Might as well admit that your correspondent has had a run-in with the law too-fined for speeding. My oh my-these teachers! Dorothy Hawthorne Jansen is another of our little homemakers and an active alumni member. Nancy Diggins is sticking by the good ole profession of teaching . CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA Saturday, April second- a beautiful Spring dayfound ten Alpha Sigs driving to New Holland for a delicious luncheon with Virginia Hoffman . Our hostess is comfortably settled in a small house with her mother and glad that she does not have another路 "sale" to prepare for this summer. We welcome three new members to our alumnae group, Ann Karns Yale and Kathryn Mylin Milan and Teb Schrack Lattamous. We hope they will come to every meeting . In May we are looking forward to meeting at the new home of our pres ident, Hester Null. She could not be with us in New Holland as moving day is about to be celebrated . Letters and notes from absent members were read and enjoyed and we gleaned the following news: Mary Aungst is planning to attend Boston Universi ty Summer School beginning June first and will register for advanced Social Service Work; Lauretta Murphy is nurse to her mother, bedfast for three years, and sings " Old King A'2.A" as a lullaby to her baby daughter; Mary Cockill is tak ing her first vacation in New York, since opening her office in private practice in Physical Therapy; June Smith is planning to teach agoin this summer at Northwestern University and enjoy three little nephews as a side line.

Convention 路 plans were discussed but no members present felt any hope or possibility of being able to attend the sessions this summer. To those fortunate enough to attend we send our best wishes!

DOTTIE BAUSHER OEFFINGER Conventio n Delegate

Our March meeting was held at the home of Betty Harner. Following the business session Dottie Oeffinger, our progJram chairman, presented Miss Dorothy Weaver, a versatile Home Economist. Miss Weaver reviewed "Family Circle" by Cornelia Otis Skinner. The group was so delighted with her that we are planning on a return engagement. The April meeting will be held at Mary Miller's home . At least three of us are ma king tentative plans to attend the convention . They are Sue Campbell , Janice Morsh and Betty Harner. Of course there is nothing tentative about our delegate Dottie Oeffinger.

Vacation plans are also in the air. Janice Marsh is discusing a trip to Denver; Morge Crawford to Canada ; Betty Harner and her husband are going to the A.M.A. Convention in Atlantic City in June ; Dottie and Tony Oeffinger leave the latter part of April for a trip to Florida . Wonder if we should remind Dottie that she is our May hostess? Kay Giltz, of Massillon, Ohio, will entertain us in her home for our June meeting .

Dear Alpha Sigs: The Charleston, West Virginia, Alumnae chapter met for luncheon on February 12 at the home of Lillian Maynard, Delta Delta, in celebration of Valentine's Day. I don't know how many of you use the same means of financing these luncheon meetings as we do, but it has proved most satisfactory. We have a number of members who are career women and who prefer Saturday luncheons . Consequently, alternate meetings are held on Saturday. The hostesses plan anyt hing they wish for the menu ; the guests each pay $1 per plate, and anything that is left over (food excepted') is added to the fund to finance a delegate to convention. Thus, on February 12, the hostesses se rved veal salad, potato chips, hearts of cranberry salad, bran hot rolls, Valentine cake and strawberry ice cream. We spent all the time we wished at the table, and had a few dollars left for the treasury. What more could one ask? The March meeting was held at the home of Frances Cavendish, Rho Rho. At that time, the following slate of officers for the new year was presented and accepted : pres ident, Alice Haworth , Beta Beta; vice-president, Myrna Jo Painter, Rho Rho; recording sec retary, Frances Cavendish, Rho Rho; corresponding secretary, Jean Milso n, Rho Rho; treasurer, Roanne Simmons, De lta Delta ; Phoeni x represe ntative, Annette Gruber, Pi Pi. As yet our plans for convention are incomplete. We know that we're se nding one official delegate, and we are hoping 'to send two more. We also hope to g"et together with the Rho Rho Active 路chapter of Huntington, West Virg ini6, so that the most can be done for those who want to go.

26 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Spring flowers were in bloom in March-but only on the luncheon table-when Ethel Wilson entertained the Chicago Alpha Sigs on March 19th. The guests included Eleanor Thomas, Frances Weegar, Gladys Schabinger, Jeanne Ramsey, Dorothy Masters, Betty Hall , Martha Curry, Effie Denison Small , Nelle Raney ond Doris Gaskins and last but not least, Judy ond Jimmy Wilson, thre~ and six respectively. It was Effie Small's first time with us and although she has two sons, eight and twelve, we hope to see her regularly after this. She and her family have recently moved to LaGrange from Hastings, Nebraska. At the past three meetings we have been collecting articles thot con be used in veterans hospitals os part of our project in District II. Quite a few books, magazines, strips of cloth and toilet articles were put into a large box and Doris Gask ins and Gladys Schabinger volunteered to ship them to their destination in Indianapolis. Gladys will be leaving soon for Deland, Florida, where one of her twin daughters, Jean, will be presenting her with her first grandchild. Mary Weinburg Hohe was not present because she was attending the wedding of Alice Jones and Richard Carson in Augusta, Illinois .

Alice expects to make her future home in Ft. Madison, Iowa, and we shall miss her in our Chicago group.

Eleanor Thomas will not be with us for the next meeting a s she will be in Atlantic City with her husband, who will attend a convention there. A nominating committee of Ethel Wilson, Doris Gas ki ns and Martha Curry (o il Evanstoni an s) was app9inted to . select officers for the coming year. The election will be held at the next mee ting on April 23 at the home of Virginia Motter in Jeffery Manor . Eleanor Brown, with Gerry Berkhardt as co-hostess, entertained thirteen of us on February 19 in Eleanor's apartment on the south side, and we all had our first glimpse of Eleanor's small son. Sally Jo Cleuver was unable to be present a s she and her husband were visiting their daughter and her family in California . Our group was enlarged by the first appearance of Betty Hall , Martha Curry and Virginia Cox Motter. We were delighted to weicome these Alpha Sig alums into the Chicago chapter.

Our plans for May 21st are in the making-really a Northeastern Ohio meeting-because the Akron Canton and Columbus chapters are invited to the l~ncheon ot our Women's City Club. It's always wonderful to get together with the gals from nearby clubs, to catch up on the news . Our last affair was in June, 1948, and we decided that it should be at least a yearly affair. The topic under discussion will be the Convention, of course, and the matters we would like discussed by our delegates to the Convention. Speaking of people moving, Edna Hook (Mrs. James), Delta Delta, is moving to Canton, Ohio, in the near future . Canton is gaining by the move, but we'll look forward to seeing you at our 路y early joint meetings!

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO Dear Alpha Sigs: As this is being written in March our "Springtime in the Rockies" greeting is a bit on the wintry side. We rather envy our sister, Helen Cummings, who, with her husband, has been vacationing in Arizona and California for several months. Since the fir~t of the year, Winifred Hay has joined the ranks of our other teachers.

She finds her hands full with the care of her two youngsters also. We were sorry to lose Betty Hill Morrow who hos moved to Golden, Colorado, but are happy to welcome Ann Atherton Sorber of Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Emporia , Kansas. We were unable to carry out plans for our Va lentine party this year. Virginia Maloney entertained us on March 2nd when plans were made to attend the Panhell e nic bridge party at the Gamma Phi Beta house . Following the business meeting we enjoyed an evening of bridge. We always look forward with a great deal of pleasure to our Spring Brunch meeting with Virginia Sheperd, which will be on April 2nd . CLEVELAND, OHIO Cleveland Alpha Sigmas put on their best and attended the Annual Panhellenic Luncheon on March 5th, at which the Associate Members were given a special welcome . We would also li ke to go on record stating our appreciation of the grand job Augusta Besse has done in representing Alpha Sigma Alpha this year. We are unable to announce our Convention Delegate in this issue because we have had no business meeting in the last two months. The March meeting was not scheduled so we would have a good attendance at the Ponhellenic Luncheon. And our April meetings are sc heduled for the 20th-just too late . We do hope to hove two me mbers attending the Convention, however, and will look forward to meeting with all of you at Gratiot Inn. A good attendonce is expected ot the April meetings-once more we split-East Siders meeting at the home of Augusta Besse, and West Siders at the home of Ada Harvey. Helen Bogus Swart, Alpha Alpha, is scheduled to show her movies of South America for the West Siders. And, by the way, we understand that Helen may move to Dayton, Ohio, soon. Dear Alpha Sigs: Columbus alumnae met January 20 at the home of Grace Dickson Lutz (Alpha Gamma ) for a delightful evening. We were sorry that Rachel Van Hook Scott was unable to come from Chillicothe to give her book review, for we had so many questions to ask our most recent bride. Feb ruary 17 was a night to be long remembered. We had a covered dish party for husbands at the home of Anne Roberts Rader (Alpha Alpha). No one present will forget the marvelous nom and four inch high.

MAY, 1949 (honest Injun! I measured 'em!) yeast rolls baked by Mr. Rader. The original intention was to show the men what good cooks we wives were, but our best efforts paled into insignificance before Mr. Rader's culinary skill. As women, our reputations were redeemed, partially at least, by the admission of the guest speaker that the very fine movies he showed were taken by his wife. St. Patrick's Day found the group at the home of Bessie Code Mason, where the gals had the wildly exciting game of counting sales tax stamps. The amount received from the redemption of these stamps will 路 be used to swell the funds of the Ohio Extension Program.

April 16, the day before Easter, all good Columbus alumnae will don their newest spring finery for the traditional Easter luncheon. Martha Ward Bell and Ma x ine Matthews Jones are in cha rge on this festive day. We hope to see as many out-of-towners as possible. Clara Oden, Thelma Glick and Carolyn Southard are members of the nominating committee and will present the slate for election at the May 1 9 meeting, when the new officers will be installed. On June 23 we journey to Reynoldsburg for the family picnic at the hospitable home of Dorothea Zorn Windom. Harriett Keller Sutton and Thelma Glick are also members of the committee on arrangements. This rounds out the year for Columbus alumnae. We always have good times together, even if we do no more than talk, and we do plenty of that!

DETROIT, MICHIGAN Our February meeting was at Loui se Stirton's home and it was one of those just wonderfud meetings where lots of girls who haven't been around for a meeting or two show up and there is a real spirit of fellowship.

There were twenty present. It was grand to welcome Esther Sprague back to our chapter. Esther has been living in Indianapolis, but recently returned to Birmingham and us! Marie Lutz and Helen Hall were hostesses at our March meeting at Marie's. Sara Jane Bumgardner brought a beautiful white cake which we raffled with Isabelle Butterfield holding the luc k number. v'arious ways to make more money for the treasury and rushing problems of active chapters wer.e discussed. Loui se Stirton represented us at a recent Detroit Panhellenic Tea and reported that she had enjoyed it a great deal.

It was suggested that we send a different guest representative each month to these meetings so that we ma y all become better acquainted with the work of Detroit's Panhellenic. Marie Lutz will represent us next month.

April 30th is the date set for our annual couple 's party at Isabelle Butterfield!s. There'll be games, prizes, food -in charge of Loui se Stirton, Isabelle Butterfield and Sara Jane Bumgardner . This promises to be a real evening of fun!

DES MOINES, IOWA Dear Alpha Sigs : Des Moines alumnae will meet sometime soon again .

A meeting was planned at the home of June Owen when the weather and st reets turned out so bad it was postponed . Since that time June's husband had an artery baloon back of hi s ear and had to have an operation whic h blocked off that artery. His recovery will 路be a long , slow ordeal but he see ms to be getting along a s well as can be expected. He is out of the hospital and at home now. Albertine Gei st, presi dent of our chapter, will be our delegate to convention in August. Albertine spent a few weeks in Florida. Lucky her. She and Ray are expecting their so n Kenneth home from Korea in July. He plans to enter college this fall. The article in the last Phoenix about Dental Hygiene was of special interest to us s ince that is what Edith Burr is preparing for this. year at the University of Pennsylvania . She will spend her Easter vacation in Des Moines . Two notes of sadness have reached us recentl y: Ethel McCormick Hanson passed away suddenly from a stroke on March 20.

She had been suffering from hypertension but was being treated for it. Her death was quite une xpected . Rita Walters lost her sister, Mrs. Carr, very recently. Lillian Buckles Jacobso n's daughter Ann is a talented musician.

She is playing the cello in the Drake Civic Symphony here in Des Moines. Thi s is quite an honor for a high school girl and we are proud of her. Drake trustees and faculty have issued invitations for the formal openi.ng of the Harvey Ingham Hall of Science and Fitch Hall of Pharmacy, to be held on April 12. Here's hoping you each one have a happy summer.

Hi , Sister Sigs : With spring and that dreamed-of balmy feeling right on our heels, Detroit's Sigma Rho Chi alum chapter se nds its best to all of you. The othe r day, we heard that our winter was the mildest in a dozen yea rs; that our co ldest day was four degrees war mer than t hat in "L.A." on the sa me day-but sti ll we watched for that first robin . Since last we wrote ou r Feb ruary and March monthly meetings have transpired; both with fabulous attendance. Our hostess, Mary Erbaugh, planned the card party in February and it brought loads of laughs and leers while we pla yed everything from solitaire to pinochle . Mary, incidently, now wears a spark ler on her third finger, left hand; the wedding will be soon, we hear. Our March meeting , appropriately "green" in

28 honor of St. Pat, held at the home of Evelyn Weed was climaxed by "lantern slides" of Ellen Imboden's recent trip across the Atlantic. Ellen, a traveler through Switzerland and France, came back with glowing reports to the gang of her European sojourn . March brought our annual bridge tea, too, on the 26th at the Women's City Club and a delightful afternoon was spent by members and their friends . Seventeen tables of "wicked" bridge players enjoyed an elaborate setting of cakes and tea at its close . No, I wasn't there; Saturday unfortunately, is one of my working days.

We all looked forward to two promising events in April. Our regular meeting was a cosmetic demonstration at Jean Siegenthaler' s home; an agent from the House of Stewart came and taught us all the tricks of her trade. We oil went home that evening ~and late) tired, but beautiful. An Edison Company plant tour on the 29th of the same month included also a dinner, a movie, and a running commentary of a most interesting Detroit monopoly. Our families were with us for the event; children, husbands, boy-friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, and more!! April boasted spring vacation too, for those lucky ones who teach, and Evelyn Weed and Betty Sowell trekked to Boston for a Health Education convention during that week, and to look in on that eastern sister chapter. At the same time "Pat" Barnes was back from her studies at Syracuse University. Pat is working on her Master's in a phase of physical therapy.

She writes a most interesting letter of seminars and research therapy; of clinical work and rehabilitation guidance. We' ve missed her but know she's doing a good job. The end of the summer will bring two new ones into our PX family (we're still gloating over the most recent son and daughter of, respectively, Rose Smithson and Pat Woolever); Kay Diegel and Dorothy Hubel can't be more interested nor excited than the rest of us.

Yours truly leaves this fair city on the 13th of June (fallacious date) for Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota. The summer session there will be the starting point of a Master's degree. You'll hear more of that in November when I return, but before that - we anx iously wait for August and our National Convention .

GREELEY, COLORADO Dear Alpha Sigs : It seems writing a letter to the Phoenix takes nothing but snowy atmosphere' We' re all so eager for a week of sunshiny weather so our sons and daughters can be outside. Quite a strain on mothers and teachers . To tell the truth, we ' d be happy with o day of sunshine. All diets were forg otten the night of March 3rd when the alums gathered for the Pot Luck Supper. It's so nice to chat ove r such wonde rful fo od. Gloria Scrogin and Groce Ka y (Mrs. Ross) were co-hostesses and saw that we all were filled to capacity. At thi s meeting it was planned to a id the Mother's Club in Greeley make more robes for the local chapter. The Country Club will be the scene o f our April 9th meeting when we'll be entertained for lunch . Mrs. Floyd (Velma ) Wilson is chairman of th e committee ma king arrangements for the luncheon .

We are looking forward to this luncheon for we hope to welcome two alums to our group. Just having graduated fr om C. S.C. E., Rose Ann Alexander is going to join us; and Mrs. Paul Cram we hope will join us. Of this Alpha Sig we know only that she is an alum . We' re keen to meet her and hope she likes our group .

The awaited stork made future Alpha Sig date material deliveries to Edith Wells (Mrs. Duane) and Roberta McKinley (Mrs. Rolond l. I saw Edith's baby and at the time was leading his mother and grandmother a merry chase. But, what baby doesn ' t? Unless otherwise informed, this group will elect officers before we disband for the summer. It seems quite logical that the new officers should have the summer to assume their tasks.

Say, come to think of it, I' m entertaining here in Maybest I get the bedroom curtains up and the fingerprints off the woodwork. We hope to have a delegate at the National Convention, but nothing certain has been decided yet. We'll be thinking about you anyhow.

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA Dear Alpha Sigs : We've had so much fun and so much to report on our last six meetings. It does us all good to see so much interest in our little chapter and we're searching all over this part of Virginia for some prospective members so they too can enjoy the fellowship of our sisterhood . We have been so glad, too, to have visitors at most of our meetings, A~As who come and go in our vicinity but not anchored here long enough to become regular members. In October we met with Connie Simms Betts, with our husbands as special guests, for an evening of bridge.

Frances Drewrey White won high score for the evening .

It was a lot of fun getting on to everybody's bidding and a good time was had by all. Connie had the house decorated with lovely fall leaves and a Halloween theme was carried out very effectively in the decorations and refreshments.

Eight of our members attended the Founder's Day Dinner at Madison College in November, when our National President, Mrs. Sharp, was the hon ored guest. Afterwords, we joined the Beta Epsilons at the sorority house and all had such a nice informal chat with Mrs. Sharp. And our ever-faithful Mrs. Martz told us some funny and interesting storie; about days at Farmville when A~A was first organized and about ' our founders , all of whom Mrs. Martz knew intimately, as she was initiated by them . It's fun to get together with the college girls as it enlivens our chapter's interest and restores our youth! And it was so wonderful to hove our National President in our midst. In the few minutes we had with her alone we warmly felt her strong spirit and quiet ease. Then we met the latter part of the month with Hannah Dillard Cox for dessert-bridge-this time without our husbands. Becky Settle, vice-president of Beta Epsilon, and Dorothy Turley James, Alpha , were guests for this meeting . Hannah always has the cutest hand-made tallies and something nice to ' keep for our scrapbook too. This time Libbie Lee Appleton came up with the high score . Our December meeting is always one of our biggest and best . Since our husbands irv.;ist on not being left out at Christmas time in parti~:ular, we always invite them too. All of us-sixteen strong, including the men-journeyed to Shenandale, sixteen miles east of town, for a dinner party and bridge . The beautiful Christmas decorations and the comfort and privacy of this large southern home lent just the right note to our holiday gathering . The men all served as hosts and mixed cocktails before dinner. We were then all seated at a long candle-lit table and served a most delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and then some! After tal k ing over vanilla ice cream with rum sauce and fruit cake wedges we adjourned to the living room where tables were fixed for bridge . One foursome

MAY, 1949 had to leave then because their baby sitters could stay no longer so that left us with three tables to play. Everyone felt the party was a huge success and plan to make it a yearly affair. A number of the Beta Epsilons will remember "Shenandale" as the location of seve ral of our Founder's Day Dinners. We were glad to have Betty McGrath Forkovitch and her Nick back with us once again. Nick had been playing football with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Betty and little Forky were with him.

January found us meeting with Margery Shank McGrath. All of our meetings sound like just pleasure but we usually have some business preceding the fun. That night we had a number of business items to take care of and finished up with election of officers. Officers elected for the ensuing two 路 years were Frances Drewrey White, president; Frances Mullen Long, vice-president; Connie Simms Betts, secretary-treasurer; Betty McGrath Forkovitch, publicity chairman . Before finishing our business we decided to have a tea in the spring for the Beta Epsilon seniors and Margery Shank McGrath offered her mother's lovely and spacious home for the event. We then played a few hands of bridge followed by delicious refreshments served by the hostess. In February we had the distinct pleasure of meeting with Miss Mary Louise Seeger, instructor at Madison College, who was the first sponsor of Beta Epsilon and first initiated member of the BE chapter. Libbie Lee Appleton, retiring president, installed the newly elected officers and Frances Drewrey White took over from there. Frances Mullen Long presented to the club the red leather scrapbook ,in which we will keep the highlights of our sorority's activities .

The publicity chairman was designated to keep this up.

We then had another enjoyable evening of bridge with Connie Simms Betts winning high score. Eleanor Shorts arid Jo Garber came up from Fishersville to meet with us again and it's always so nice to have them. Our March meeting was with Miss Louise Boje, sponsor of BE. We always look forward to this gathering with her as we don't get to see much of her as in school days.

Excitement ran high as our main item of business and topic of conversation was the convention at Port Huron , Michigan . Everyone would li ke to go and several are making serious plans. Sounds like a lot of fun and hope we'll be seeing all of you there. We voted to send in $10 .00 on life memberships, one dollar for each of our eight members and another dollar towards the membership of the first two members to pay anything on their life membership dues. We again played some bridge, with Frances Drewrey White taking the high honors.

Looks like we play a lot of bridge but we find it a congenial pastime and convenient for our number. Dorothy Turley James was a guest again and we hope will become one of our regular members . Several of our members have enjoyed a part of our winter in the real southland and have we envied them! Mrs. E. C. Martz and Margery Shank McGrath and husband have all been to Florida for a nice visit. We would like to point out that our members are not only active in sorority work but various other organizations. Frances Drewrey White has recently been elected as second vice-president of the Woman's Club of Harrisonburg and Libbie Lee Appleton as Chairman of Community Welfare. Frances is to attend the state convention at Old Point Comfort, Virginia, as delegate from the local club. We note too that Hannah Dillard Cox recently was toastmistress at the Rockingham County Teachers Association Banquet.

She serves as treasurer for this organization . And we hear that Connie Simms Betts is directing a mock wedding and same skits at her local church . That's about

HONOLULU, T. H. _ Aloha from Hawaii! When you are far away from home, what a good feeling it is to meet your Alpha Sig sisters! Under the able supervis ion of our Pres ident, Alice Brown (Pi Pi chapter), we are enjoying some super get-togethers here in fair Hawaii Nei which would make any Mainlander envious. Our first function after our organization meeting in November was a Sunday breakfa st held December 1 9 at th e exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club on the sunny beach at Waikiki . A photographer was there to take our picture for "The Phoenix," using Diamond Head as our background. While we basked in the sunshine, our thoughts were with those shivering Northerners on the Mainland . Alpha Sigs and their families got better acquainted at our January picnic held at the beach home of Elizabeth Abrams . One of our rare tropical sto rms chased us indoors. The fireplace (they are scarce items in Hawaii ) was most inviting and our picnic was transformed into a buffet su pper. Valentine's Day was celebrated by a luncheon at the famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Coral and Mary's dress shop staged a style show. Resort and strictly Hawaiian fashions were expertly modeled . We have planned a business meeting for April 4 and plan to discuss the National Convention. It certainly sounds like grand times in Michigan come August. We would all love to be with you . 30 Christmas rolled around, we greeted the season with the usual spirit of gaiety and fun-making. We gathered at the home of one of the members to enjoy refreshments and merry chatter. We were fortunate to hove several of the college members as well as some former Alumnae members as our guests. In January we met at Mrs. Betty Porche Hebert's home for a deep dish supper. We must hove gained pounds that night,, for a better dinner was never set before a king. We hod hot rolls and butter, roost chicken, cold cuts, potato salad, celery, olives, pickles, fruit salad, chocolate cake, mints, nuts, and coffee. Now you con see why we gained very many pounds. Again we lingered hours catching up on news.

Mrs. Will de Grummond, High School Librarian, was our honored guest at our March meeting which was held at the home of Mrs. Mae Daigle Th ibodeaux. Mrs. de Grummond graciously consented to review Fronc;es Parkinson Keyes' " Dinner at Antoine's" for us. As is usual with almost everyone, we never tire of hearing more about our Crescent City. Angel's Delight was se rved to complete our most enjoyable evening. Our chapter meets monthly during the school yea r only, because we find everyone scattered about during the summer months.

We have had a very successful year thus far, and we ore looking forward to our lost two meetings with very much enthusiasm. We hope that all of you will hove a pleasant summer, and we hope to see many of you at the convention.

in Music Education for the Music Educators Notional Conference. Her article on the Iotter subject appeared in the M .E.N.C. Journal recently.

Dean Mayfield, who came to Houston in September from the State College in Lafayette, Louisiana, is listed in "Who's Who in Music" and is nationally known for her work in music education, voice, and choral work.

She has stucfied with Dudley Buck and other well-known voice teachers and has worked with some of the most eminent choral conductors in this country. Her choral programs have been written up in both "Musical America" and "Musical Courier." She has traveled widely both in this country and in Europe, and is a frequent lecturer at state and national meetings.

She has her Master of Arts degree from Columbia University, where she has done work toward her Ph.D. She is a member of the Houston Tuesday Music Club and the Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, national music fraternity. She is also active in the local branch of the American Association of University Women, having been president of the Lafayette, Louisiana, Branch of A.A. U.W. the past two years. She is a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and served as co-adviser to the fraternity's chapter at Southwestern Louisiana Institute .

HOUSTON, TEXAS Alpha Sigmas in Houston met at Fe li x Mexican Restaurant Saturday, March 12, and organized the Houston Alpha Sigma Alpha Alumnae Chapter. It was a real love fest! Members who knew each other did not know the other now lived in Houston. Great fun! Alpha Mayfield, Dean of the Southern College of Fine Arts, acted on an invitation from National to call us together. She will entertain us at a tea-musicale at the College next Saturday. Miss Mayfield Appointed to National Chairmanship in the National Federation of Music Clubs Miss Alpha Mayfield, Dean of the College at Southern College of Fine Arts, received an invitation recently to become Notional Chairman of Opera for Juniors for the Notional Federation of Music Clubs, according to Dr. Homer Springfield , President of the College.

In the some telegram, which come from Mrs. Royden James Keith , Notional President of N.F.M.C. , came an invitation for Dean Mayfield to appear on the program at the Biennial Convention which convenes in Dallas March 27 to April 3 .

Two articles by Dean Mayfield hove appeared in nati onal mus ic magazines recently. " Opera News" carried a three page article, accompanied by pictures in a recent issue. It was entitled, " Opera in Mus ic Education ."

Convention Delegate Here I om again reporting to you on the Huntington Alumnae Chapter. Since my lost news letter was written I have announced my September marriage to L. E. Roberts, Jr., who attends Marshall here in town . The lost meeting we hod which was our April meeting they gave a surprise shower for Helen Clovis and myself.

Helen is getting married Easter to Harry Nolan. We were each given a sterling silver nut dish with Alpha Sigma Alpha Alumnae engraved on it besides some lovely individual gifts from everyone. The meeting was held at Mrs. Thomas' home where we discussed the activities for the rest of the year. Pions were mode for a picnic to be held the last of May at which we ore going to hove o pot luck supper. The alums, their husbands, and their boyfriends ore expected to attend . This is becoming on annual affair to which we look forward too. Plans were also mode to toke the active members

MAY, 1949 of Rho Rho Chapter of Marshall College to dinner during a week which they have set aside as Alpha Sigma Alpha week. The week will end with a dinner dance given by the active chapter at one of the hotels in town. The alums are looking forward to it. It will be a big week.

At the March meeting, new officers were elected and the new pres ide nt is Mrs. J. E. (Lucille) Holler. Mrs. Edward (Marie) Greene, Vice President; Miss Lois Long , Secretary; Ruth Fisher Roberts, Treasurer; and the new Phoenix correspondent will be Mrs. L. D. (Wilsie) VanOsdoL The convention was discussed and it was decided that Luc ille Holler should go since she is the new president. It was suggested that someone might take her car and take a group of the alums up. We do hope that a good number in our chapter plan to go. We will see you there.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA "It's only April, but August will soon be here, And Alpha Sigs will gather from far and near For the House Party convention, that's sure to win The hearts of all who come to Grati ot Inn." How anyone can- resist convention after reading the March issue of the Phoenix, is the $65 question, isn't it? We in Indianapolis are all very enthusiastic about convention, of course, we get enthusiastic about everything. We were especially so at ou r April meeting held in the home of Est her Burge, as we heard about convention from our president, Florence Lull and as we heard the report on the philanthropic activities of Region II from Betty Rice. Betty has worked like a trojan and no one but the veterans at the U. S. Veterans Hospital on Cold Spring Road, really know what Betty has accomplished. She, herself, is an instructor at the hospital in arts and ski lls giving her time each week . In this way she has seen for herself the needs of the veterans and our National Project jn_ Region II could not be in more capable hands . Betty purchased, before the great Hoosier Sectional basket-ball games (which is an institution in Indiana) an FM Convertor for the radio system at the hospital. She has also purchased another 16 mm. projector. Most of the chapters in Region II have been very responsive to Betty's requests for comfort articles, cigarettes, records, books, cards, bed-room slippers, etc., for the veterans. Thank you Betty, for a job well done! ' Another thing we are enthusiastic about is our association 'with the Indianapol is Panhellenic Association .

Our delegate, Jane McDavitt, has not missed a tea or a meeting on a conference and has made some very good friends in Panhellenic . She is now planning to assist as hostess at the State Convention to he held at the Marott Hotel April 23rd-as well as an education conference on April 21st in the Indianapo lis School Superintendent's Office, having been appointed to the education committee.

On . March 28th we welcomed into the Indianapolis Chapter, Zelma Piner who was initiated that day at Ball State Teacher's College, Muncie, Indiana. Zelma was a member of Sigma Alpha Sigma when that group petitioned Alpha Sigma Alpha severa l years ago. Congratulations Zelma .

Jean McCammon, our versatile and accomplished member, was recently e lected President of the Indianapolis Parent-Teachers Association. Jean also .had the

31 distinction of speaking along with prominent career women from all over the United States, during Career Week at Purdue University. Her sessions on Home-making had a record attendance.

Helen Noblitt has submitted four, yes I said four, of her songs to the Convention Song Contest.

We are happy to report that Betty Soland is recuper ating from a recent illness as well, as is Alice Thompson from recent surgery.

On April 7th we were stunned by the sudden death of Frank Leib, Genevieve's husband. I attended my first convention at Old Point Comfort, .Virginia in 1934 through Fran k's kindness and generosity. He never knew what it was not to be kind and generous to others.

Our hearts go out to Genev ieve at this sad and lonely time .

Plans are now in the air for our annual Mother's Day luncheon to be held on May 7th. It is enough to say that Marie Kingdon is chairman-that means a delightful, a beautiful party, one that will long remain in the memories of both our mothers and ourselves .

In spite of the ice and snow, Sunday, February 13th, found the Kansas City Alpha Sigma Al'umnae ce leb rat ing St . Valentine's Day with a tea at the home of Doroth y Clifton. Rubye Waterbury, Lora Murrell, and Dorothy Hook were assisting hostesses. Each guest was we lcomed at the door by one of the hostesses, who pinned a valentine lady, made of red hearts and pipe stem cleaners, on her with her name written in white. The story of St. Valentine was given by Dorothy Kreek in a very pleasing manner which we all enjoyed hearing once again. After thi s Dorothy supervised the playing of the game of "Hearts" in which the girls who participated lost so me of their dignity while they hopped down the room , placing a heart on the floor in front of them to hop on-each contestant being cheered on by -her s ide to win the race . Then with Dorothy a ski ng th e questions and choosing the contestants "Double or Nothing" was played and it was quite gratifying to see and hear just how intelligent everyone was. (Really some of

32 them should go on the rodio.l The winners received baskets of condy hearts . By this time we were oil pretty well excited and in need of entertainment supplied by someone other than ourselves. The big event of the afternoon was the tap dancing of Paula Jean lllmer, a six year old, dressed os a Valentine. She was accompanied on the xylophone, played by David Kreek, an other s ix year old (so n of Dorothy Kreekl with Dorothy at the piono. They also entertained us with some singing. After the program tea was served, with Wilma Wilson Sharp pouring ond everyone spent the remainder of the afternoon visiting and talking obout the Panhellenic fashion show on March 22nd . We were particularly interested in the fashion show os one of our members, Mary Moore, was the co-chairman in charge of the arrangements of the fashion show "Mama, The Forgotten Heroine" the theme of the "All the Family" fa shion show which wos presented at the Bookside Theater on Morch 22nd by the Ponhellenic group in Kansas City. Mary really did the Alpha Sigs proud. She did a wonderful job and the show was most outstanding in fashion shows. Just wish we had the space to tell oil you girls about it, or better yet, wish you could hove see n it. Our March meeting on the 26th was o one o'clock luncheon held at the Aladdin Hotel. The hostesses were Ruth Pennell , Virginia Corder, Kathryn Kierns, and Frances McKinney. The tables were lovely with their spring like decorations and place cords with faces mode of buttons ond the most unusual hots andhairdos thot you have ever seen. This was to prepare us for the program given ofter lunch by Mrs. Lloyd White and her talk on "The Philosophy of Hats." This was really something super. There were two faces at this meeting that we haven ' t seen for some time ond do hope thot they are back to stay. Virginia Callison , who has been in Tucson, Arizona and helped to organize the alumnae chapter there , and Mary K. Reiff, who has been working in Fort Worth, Texas. We are still giving cl othing to the needy high school students. We also gave a contribution to the Spastic Center for Children.

We feel that we can do more in our Philanthropic Projects by donating to organizations helping children .

One of our Kansas City Alumnae members receives pay for attending the movies. Lora Patrick MurreiJ of Alpha Beto now holds the unique position of City Motion Picture Censor, of which there are only seven in the United States. Lora was one of eighty-five applicants for the posit ion for which the first prerequisite was a College degree and activity in Club work. She was selected after scoring the highest grade on written and ora l exoms and having a series of personal interviews.

City ordinan ces provide that every film displayed must first be viewed and passed by the Film Censor before it may be showed in the City. Lora became an Alpha Sig while attending Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, Kirksville, Missouri , in 1920. Later she was president of a Parent-Teacher unit there during which time she promoted a school lunch program, music appreciation in the schools, and parent study group. For more than four yeors she was a social welfare worker . After moving to Kansas City she was an employment counse lor for the U. S. Employ ment Service and State Division of Emp loyme nt Security for six years. Lara is active in the Kansas City Alumnae group and held an office two years until evening classes which she was attending at the University of Kansas City conflicted with Board meetings . Besides alumnae activities she is also a member of the Kansas C ity Women's Chamber of Commerce, The Business and Professional Women's

Club, Missouri Association of Social Welfare, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church . Lora has two children, Billy, an Army pilot and Lieutenant in World War II, is married and lives in Kirksville, Missouri , and a daughter Joyce, who lives with her and is a legal secretary.

LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA Dear Alpha Sigs, We changed our usual meeting plans for our March meeting and invited our husbands to have a spaghetti supper with us. We had such fun and our supper was delicious. Each girl contributed a part of the supper.

We were able to have the girls' club room on the Southwestern campus for the occasion. Those present included : Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adams, Mr. and Mrs .

Malcolm Burleigh, Mr. and Mrs. Noel Fruge, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mayeux, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Bolton, and Miss Jessie Keep. The following week we were quite proud to be hostesses to Mrs. Sharp at a Barbecue Lodge.

Mrs. Sharp was making a tour of several southern states to visit both active and alumnae chapters. She came to visit us directly from Natchitoches where she was the guest of Psi Psi Chapter. After visiting our chapter, she went to New Orleans. In a very interesting manner she told of the activities of the alumnae chapters of Kansas City, Mo., and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She told us not to become discouraged over the lack af attendance at our meetings because at times it is hard to get a large group of alumnae members together. Mrs. Sharp also discussed various social projects which we could pion for the coming year. Ethel Burleigh, president of our Alumnae Chapter, gave a report of the activities of the chapter.

MUNCIE, INDIANA Hello Alpha Sigs, We have had two meetings since the last time we wrote to the Phoenix . The February meeting was held at Anna Marie Bulls home . Sally and George are Anna Mari!! 's two children and they have certainly grown since the last time we saw them. George was taking his nop when we arrived and he slept through mast of our noise and chatter. Sally, who is six years old was skating with her girl friend and while she was gone her little boy friend called at the house for her. This younger generation! This was the last meeting Martha Stuckey was able to be with us. She was leaving in a few weeks to go to Colorado. We shall miss her enthusiasm and good ideas. Carmine Alvey entertained us at the March meeting . She has a lovely new home west of the col lege . She and her husband moved in their new home in January so we felt we almost helped to initiate the house for her. We are so glad Carmine can be with us again . She has been quite busy during the last few years and has done such a variety of activities. Carmine had been office nurse for her doctor-husband but decided in January to be a housewife and a "lady of leisure." CARMINE CREE ALVEY

Convention Delegate Betty Miller, our president, has been teaching since J a nuary. She is teaching the second grade at Selma School and likes ft very much. We don't see how she does it-keeping up a home and taking care of her two boys. Elinor Keller is to have our April meeting and we will have our Senior tea in May. These should be enjoyable meetings too. A round-robin letter was started at the last meeting. Our other round-robin letters always were so interesting and we hope this one will be the same.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK On Saturday, February 12, Edie Lou Miller entertained the chapter at her very new and attractive apartment at Astoria, Long Island. After a delicious dessert, the girls began to auction off their surplus Christmas presents and items made for the occasion by interested mothers. What bargains! Some wrapped for surprises and many unwrapped! The climax of the afternoon was Elsy Jessup's bid for the largest package with the prettiest wrapping. For $1.25 Elsy's bargain surprise was the perennial pair of high button shoes.

We'll have to watch out next year when Elsy brings those museum pieces back to the White Elephant sale.

After clearing a tidy little sum for the treasury, the girls were highly entertained with Edie Lou's stories of Hawaii where she worked with a recreational group during the war. On March 12, Olive Watkinson entertained the chapter at her home on Long Island . After a short meeting, the New York alums spent the afternoon playing cards. It was a real disappointment that New York chapter was unable to travel enmasse to Philadelphia on the weekend of Mar<::h 18 for a reunion with the members of the Philadelphia alumnae chapter . The next New York meeting is scheduled for April 9 at Wyn Allen's apartment in New York.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA Hello again from Phila .Spring has finally come to our fair city and all of our luck'>' suburbanite sisters (who have gardens ) are enjoying their early spring tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. ' Spring fever, of course, is rampant with everyone looking forward to vacations-especially the house 路party convention h August. Since my last letter we've had several monthly luncheons . In February, in spite of a transit strik-e in Philo., a group of A~As came to my place in Moorestown, where we ate, talked and finally made last minute plans for our N. Y. guests. (An interesting note on that meeting was our servers-Don Richmond, who came along with wife Vy, planned to spend the afternoon with my husband. But the two of them turned chef and butler and kept the serving table and coffee cups filled . Our thanks to them'l March found us quite disappointed that our plans with the N. Y. alums did not materialize . However, we can look forward to having that group visit us another time .

Nonetheless, the Philo. alums gathered on March 1 9 for a luncheon meeting at the New Century Club. With only three more meetings before summer vacations, last minute plans for raising money for convention expenses are rapidly shaping up. These plans include a big card party and fashion show at Strawbridge and Clothier in Philo . in May. We're working hard to make this event a big success. Only two more luncheons before we part for the summer. It hardly seems possible that another year is almost over. Already the nominations for new officers are being presented to the group. I'll probably not be able to tell you about them until next year. So to all new officers we extend our congratulations. Only a little news about individual girls-Mae Sweeten Buckwalter (NN) is now living the happy life of an Army bride. Her new husband is stationed in Chicago. So Mae is having a wonderful experience in "The Windy City." Shirley Maines Trice (NN) has joined the list of A~As who have recently moved into new homes.

Shirley a nd her family have just ~oved into the house which they've just finished building . Jean Reimet reports that Frances l,.awrence Powell (NN) visited old friends on her recent jaunt to Philo . from Connecticut.

In January Alpha Sigs were proud to see a full page advertisement of Gimbel Brothers, Philo. for that advertisement centered around Eleanor Fadeley (NN), research worker in Gimbels laboratory. Eleanor tests fabrics, the advertisement showing her at work . Last year Eleanor was corresponding secretary for the Philo .

Our last meeting was held Thursday, March 24th. Since we were recently organized, we were thrilled to welcome Mary Jane Kelly, Lucille Cox Spradlin, and Elizabeth Peak into our Chapter, and are eagerly hoping t o see more new faces at our next gathering. Harriet Leek was appointed Chairman of the Recommendation Commitee, and we are counting on her to a id us immensely in finding new A::i.A material far the college chapters.

Harriet, Dot Hubbard, and Dawn Brewer are certainly to be envied-they are now teaching in an ultra-m odern designed school with the most up-to-date equipment obtainable . Our best wishes go to Dottie Sue Simmons whose engagement to Harry Woodson Kessler, Jr., has been announced . I might add that Louise Breckenridge, an Alumnae of Alpha Chapter, Farmv ille, served as a member of the Electorial College from Vi rginia in the Pres idential Election . SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA What a thrill it was for us to meet on January 22, 1949, in San Francisco to organize the San Francisco Alumnae Chapter at which time we met a few old

friends and several new sorority sisters . From this meeting which was the result of Jean Knapp 's efforts to bring the group together, we decided to meet once a month on the third Saturday of each month. We are now going through growing pains and our purpose far the present is to establish a well organized A::i.A family from our members who are spread all aver the Bay area . Because of our thanks to Jean for starting the group and because of her outstanding leadership abil ities, we elected her our first president. Our other officers are Julia Lancaster, vice-president; Marianne Jury, secretary; Grace Paden, treasurer; and Ruth Mallory, editor .

Although we haven't had a chance to get too well acquainted as yet, I want to tell you a few 1<hings about each of our members. Inez Helterbran Burke (BBJ is looking forward eagerly to spring because at that time the stork is expected. Her husband , Jim, who, besides being an excellent culinary artist, is a salesman at one of the men's stores in San Francisco. Marianne Jury (TTl, a vivacious nurse at Saint Mary's Hospital in San Francisco, has just been bit by the love bug . In her spare time she is redecorating her apartment which she shares with her sister. Fl orence Gee Boysen (MM) whose husband is a government employee is in the midst of packing to jo in him in Hawa ii. She has two adorable children-a little girl two and a boy five. Jean Kr.app (BB) is as active and has as many interests as she did in college .

What time isn't taken up with her job at an employment agency and social activities is spent in learning to cook. Jane Cannon (BB) is the actress in our midst.

At the prese nt she is doing graduate work at Stanford in the dramatics department. She has been active all year in the outstanding plays which Stanford has presen ted . Juanita James Watson (EE) is a winning and charming secretary and is also busy creating a home for her husband . Mary Paden Stewart and Grace Paden , sisters who were charter members of BB , live in the beautiful Stewart home in Palo Alto. Mary's husband owns a service station and their hobby is gardening .

Ruth Baker Mallory (BB) is busy playing Farmer-in-theDale and London Bridge with her kindergarten class at one of the public schools in Redwood City while her husband is doing graduate work at Stanford . Julia Lancaster (TH) has o most interesting and worthwhile job teaching cross-eyed children in the Medical building in San Francisco. She has a beautiful ranch in Marin County and two dogs. June Morris Croce (PP), whose husband is a salesman, has a lovely home in Richmond and a little two year old girl.

SOUTH BEND, INDIANA Dear Alpha Sigs: Time for another issue of the Phoenix! The last issue was wonderful, and convention seems to be the main topic from now 'til August. Our year is almost over again, with only two more meetings before the end of school when we will once again be flung around the states 'til September. On February 19, "V. M ." Roberts was hostess in her home for a lovely luncheon which ended by being a baby shower for me- surprise, of course . Everything was s imply perfect, and we had such a wonderful afternoon . On March 3rd we all met at a novel restaurant here for spaghetti and held our meeting over coffee . We all brought our gifts for the Veteran ' s Hospital which Region II is supporting, and made plans

for our next meeting . Hod o letter t"rom Martha Stuckey this week all the way from Colorado. She enrolled spring term at Greeley, and promptly met some Alpha Sigs.

They took her in hand at once and are introducing her to Alums already . She is really grateful for their interest and real sorority spirit. Martha tells me she has signed a contract to teach in the Fort Wayne, Indiana , public schools this fall. Another prospect for you, Fran Miller! I do hope that chapter comes into existence this fall. For some of you girls who knew Mim Partridge, I have word of her marriage, February 14; and Mary McCrea's marriage on February 5 . Read the announcements for further particulars. Our alumnae delegate has not been chosen as yet, but we hope to have a good representation from South Bend going to a national -convention so close to home . See you all in August.

Five of us went over and had o lovely time at Betty Dani el's house, helping them to organize. I am sure it's one night we'll never forget-after having such a terrible time finding Betty's apartment, getting stuck in the mud twice, along with a few other "minor" incidents. But we were so pleased to help them get started that we didn't even mind such trifles. It was especially nice, too, seeing Skippy Warden DashLelds again after all these years. (Skippy was president of BE chapter in 1940-41). Our March meeting was held with Paula Ballard and at this time we made plans to hold our Mother-Patroness ceremony in April. We also have plans well under way for a buffet supper and program to be held in May for girls in this section who will be going off to college next year.

Looking back over this year's work, I feel quite proud of all our chapter has accomplished this year. Frances Hewitt has been a wonderful president and has really dane o lot for our sorority.

TOPEKA, KANSAS The Topeka Alumnae Chapter beld their January meeting an January I, at the home of Kathy Carheimer Yearout with Evelyn Cooper Kaonko assisting hostess.

The evening was spent playing bridge. February 15, we met with Betty Lyon Murren, with Betty Carlson Shannon assisting. Two new members, Ida Mae Elder Daugherty and Mary Rupp joined us, and we made Washington Birthday favors for the trays of the patients at Hillcrest Sanitarium. A White Elephant Sale for the benefit of our sagging treasury, March 15, netted us $9.33 . Again we made favors for Hillcrest, this time as St. Patricks . The meeting was held at the home of Janus Brown Rue, with Ida Mae Elder Daugherty assisting hostess.

Dear Alpha Sigs: Down here in Suffolk spring is really in full bloom , although it really isn't much different from what we have had all winter-the weather for the most part this year has been just ideal-no cold periods, snow storms or anything. Weren't we lucky? In February our chapter planned and arranged a luncheon for all the alumnae members in this whole area, and though the response might have been much better, we were pleased with the 22 members we did get. And particularly were we pleased with some of the results we achieved-application for a charter for a new alumnae chapter in the Newport News-Hampton area . At our luncheon-complete with sp ring flowers and darling programs (made by Mully Buggi-we tried to give all the alumnae some of our enthusi asm for being active alums. Harriett Brown Johnson , National Founder's Day chairman, was the main speaker and used "Why Go to Convention" as her topic. We ore hoping this talk will bear some worthy fruit when convention time rolls around. Then we held a round-table discussion on all the "whys" and "wherefores" of A'LA doings. The discussion really was worthwhile as everyone seemed to have a question to ask or a thought of their own they wanted to put forward.

TUCSON, ARIZONA Dear Alpha Sigma Alphas: Out here on the desert we have found two more sisters, Margaret Shuc k (Mrs. John ) and Lu Sparks, both from Zeta Zeta chapter. And so our number grows.

Margaret is a very popular entertainer and sings for many groups here . Lu is secretary at the Southern Arizone School for Boys, a private schoo l for boys with st udents from all over the United States. This summer Lu will be working for the seventh year at Cheley Camp, Estes Park, Colorado. Joe Ambacher has. just moved into her new home at 2709 E. Hedrick Drive .

It's a modern red brick construction with everything inside brand new. The living room sets the keynote of the scheme for the other rooms with its twotone walls in tropical blue, gray carpet, burgundy sectional furniture, one Nile green chair, a striking red lamp and tables in blond wood. One bedroom is done in mauve pink and blue, the other in geranium red and gray. The kitchen is a dream with new equipment and a color scheme of yellow and burgundy. Joe certainly knows how to use color effectively, and her new home is beautiful. The Tucson A'LAs have exhausted the "giveaway" clothing of their families, neighbors and friends, so our project of sending used clothing to the women in the state mental hospital has been discontinued temporarily.

36 In March we met at Lyda Wade's home and spent the evening making bandages for the Red Cross. (I must confess that every bandage I folded had to be done over so I gave up and just talked while the others talked and folded. ) Lyda is a wonderful cook and served the most delicious refreshments. Our next meeting is a buffet supper at Mary Kindergon's with husbands as guests and no bandages. Em Frost, National Alumnae Organizer, is our delegate at convention in August. We are very proud to have her represent us. Till fall, and a pleasant summer to you all.

WASHINGTON, D. C. The February meeting of the Washington, D. C. , alumnae chapter was held on February 12, so we were delightfully entertained ot a St . Valentine's tea at the apartment of Mrs. Georgeanna Page . We all pitched in and had a Pot Luck supper at Mrs. Bess Corey's

apartment in March . Everybody must have brought the dish she prepared best as everything was delicious. We ate so much we could hardly get through the huge, beautiful chocolate layer cake which Mrs . John S. ("Lil" ) Hoffecker had made. Our president, Bettie Purdy, appointed a committee at the March meeting to discuss ways and means of raising money with which to buy bed-side radios to put in some of the many hospitals in the Washington area . Saturday, April 9, we are going to meet for luncheon and a fashion show at the Raleigh Hotel's Pall Mall room. We will hold our business meeting after lunch . The Panhellenic association in Washington is sponsoring a benefit garden party at the British Embassy. Lady Franks, wife of the British Ambassador, will be in the receiving line. ALPHA State Teachers College, Farmville, Virginia Dear A~As: Well, here we are almost at the end of our l 948-49 year. Writing this last letter to you is a sad occasion because I really have enjoyed telling you the news from Alpha chapter this year.

We are so very happy about the results of our rushing season . Who wouldn't be proud to have nine new sisters?

All of them are wonderful girls. We had a very impressive initiation last Monday night; it was a wonder- . ful feeling to see our new sisters with their pins on and faces shinning.

Alpha Kappa Gamma has recently selected from our student body Ray Phillips, Jacqueline Wright, and Norma Roady for membership. We are proud of these girls for scholastic ability, personality, and leadership.

The May Court this year finds Martha "B" Hylton and Violet Ritchie representing our sorority. Of course, the student body chooses the girls for May Court.

During the last two weeks we have had our major and minor elections and A~A girls again proved their ability, popularity, and leadership. Ray Phillips was elected president of the Athletic Association; Jackie Wright, president of the House Council; "B" Hylton, vice-president of Student Government; Helen Agnew, secretary of Student Government; Jackie Moody, secretary of House Council; and Anne Kemp, treasurer of Y.W.C.A. We have elected our officers for next year and under their able leadership I am sure that it will be as happy and successful as this year. We will have as our president Martha "B" Hylton; Anne Kemp, first vice-president; Marian Breedon, second vice-president; Betty L. ALPHA BETA Northeast Missouri State College, Kirksville, Missouri Dear A~A Members : We have truly had a busy three months. Our Sweetheart dance in February was a grand success. Beautiful formals, a wonderful orchestra, and happy girls-what mare could we ask? There were hearts floating most everywhere (paper, that is), and everyone was in the true sweetheart mood.

Our new officers have been elected. We have beautiful Jean Leach for president; vivacious Emilene Lehr far vice-president; popular Ann King for secretary; stately Garnita Morrey for treasurer; friendly Jeannie

My last important item is that Patti Feese, who was graduated in the winter quarter, was married April 20th to John Semanek. They were married on the Bride and Groom program in Hollywood, California .

ALPHA GAMMA State Teachers College, Indiana, Pennsylvania Dear Alpha Sigs: Another school year is swiftly drawing to a close, a year that has been full of fun and satisfying activity.

Since you last heard from us, we have added eight new girls to our chapter. Formal bidding was on the seventeenth of March, and we are happy and pleased with these who decided to come the Alpha Sig way. Betty Barclay, Florence Leonard, Nancy Cullen, Kay Huntoon, Norma Bellman, Jane Stephens, Mildred Williamson, and Joyce. Moore are the new wearers of the red and white.

Marilyn Chelgren is our new president, and editor is Arline Wiedwald. Since a complete list will be printed in the Phoenix, I'll just say here that we have a swell group of officers and that next year is bound to be one of the best in the history of Alpha Gamma chapter.

Plans for the remaining few weeks of school include the Panhellenic dinner and installation of officers a Mother's Day Luncheon on May 7, the traditional Str~w颅 berry Festical, and a Farewell Breakfast for the graduating seniors.

Instead of being sod this spring as we '49 seniors prepare to leave, yours truly is happy to hove been selected to keep in contact with our class as we become alums, and make plans to keep us as truly Alpha Sigs as before. Dear Alpha Sig Sisters: Well, hove you all got spring fever already too? have! It's getting so nice out here, after our frigid Kansas winter, that it sure makes us feel good. But, we still go to our classes. Oh, yes!

We hove a pretty heavy social calendar on the horizon with our Spring Formal, "Corel Reefs," as the main highlight. One the second of April we're having a "house party." Mother West is giving it for all of us and our dotes. It is the first time we will hove hod one of these and we're all looking forward to it. Also that some week-end we're having some out-of-town seniors down for a big rush party out at the new president's house.

Our Mother's Day Teo is the second of May, and our senior farewell breakfast is the lost day of finals . We always go out twenty miles to the big lake for this party and plan to stay most of the day. Of course we oil got burnt to a crisp lost year, but we're still looking forward to it. Only thing bad, we'll lose eight seniors-quite a few!

Miss Mitchell , the Dean of Women, is coming out for dinner next week os we're all afraid we've been so busy we haven 't see n much "o f her lately.

Three of our girls hove become engaged since I wrote to you last. They ore : Betty Childecers to William Jones, a Sigma Tau ; Barbaro McClellan to Walt Smith, also o Sigma Tau; and Janet W ilson to William Coe, on Alpha Kappa Lambda .

Also, along that line, three of the older girls who didf) ' t wont to leave school without announcing something, announced their intentions of getting marriedwhen and if they con find a man. Cigars and jelly beans were passed, and each one sported on onion and wrapping cord corsage . It was different, and cute!

We're all looking forward to the co nvention this summer and Doris Wells says to say " hello," and that she wonts to see you all up there in August.

Dear Alpha Sigs: Hello there! Well , another two months hove flown by and here I am again, writing my letter to you.

In February we were pleasantly surprised when our pledges gave us a clever Volentine Party. They turned the tables on us and various stunts were given to us to do. We really hod a wonderful time; two days later all of these girls become actives. February the twenty-third we hod election of officers, with the results as follows: president, Doris Jean Snodgrass; vice-president, Horlene Reed; secretory, Jackie La Veske; treasurer, Peggy Toylor; chaplain, Lauretta Stenger; editor, Faith Casebolt; registrar, Ellen Buck; song leader, Lee Rue .

We hove been practicing for Song Fete which will be held May 4, 1949. After much thought we decided to sing "Let My Song Fill Your Heart." Here's hoping we win .

Now for the future. We ore also collecting clothes for some needy children in Warrensburg. Many plans ore in the offing; we wish to have another bake sole, a dote picnic, and we .are purchasing red and white hots and jackets.

A group of Zeta Zetas visited the Alpha ' s Spring Formal at Springfield and come back bubbling over with what a wonderful time they hGJd .

Deer Alpha Sigs: A-she's adorable, B-she's so beautiful -yes, she's on Alpha you con bet. Fred Waring chose her as KANZA queen of 1949-Miss Louise Burchom-our own KANZA queen contestant. We're really proud of her! Also, the Student Council members hove selected Louise as queen candidate for K U Relay Queen, at the twenty-fourth annual Kansas Relays to be held at Lawrence, Kansas, April 23 .

The Alpha Sigs here at good ole' K.S.T.C. this semester hove been sporting new red and white sweaters with the one and only "A~A" on the bock. They really look sharp on the gals as they go dashing around the campus .

In February we hod o big time at our "Shipwreck Party" which was held at the home of one of our Alphas, Ruth Ann Williamson . Small flogs resembling those of a ship with various inscriptions were used for decorations. Life Savers were given as favors.

Election of officers for Eta Eta took place in March .

Joan Hughes was elected president; Mary Harpole, vicepresident; Nancy Anderson, secretory; Marjory Pease, treasurer; Virginia England, chaplain; Roberto Evans, registrar; and Mory Ann Abbey, editor. Installation of the new officers was held March 22 .

Another honor come to the Alphas this year-Marjory Pease was elected president of Ponhellenic for the year 1949-50.

Plans ore now 路 in full swing for our senior breakfast which the active chapter gives each year to honor the seniors. This year Eta Eta has twelve graduates. The breakfast will be the morning of Baccalaureate, May 29.

THETA THETA Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts Dear Alpha Sigs: Lost Tuesday we hod our spring rush party and believe me it really was quite a success. From the moment we left "port" in Boston until we "docked" bock there again after our "trip" there was always something happening. For you see we went on a "soil" to Treasure Island. And what a journey. Dot Currier, our alum president, graciously lent us her house for the escapade and we all hod a just perfect time . Thanks to Jan Hassler, we had a real "radio" program including the Judy Canova twins.

Dot Booth had a monologue that was just perfect.

(I guess some of us ore still laughing at it.) We included a real good truth or consequence show. It was all in all a very "nautical" time.

This coming Wednesday we ore having a party with one of the "frats" here at school that might possibly become our "brother" fraternity. We hove the refreshments and they the entertainment. From all reports so far, it sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

Dates hove been chosen for rushing next year and already some form of plans for our rush party are being mode. Another good ideo that Panhellenic has taken up are "coke" parties in addition to our regular rush parties and luncheon dotes. Each sorority entertains on a different afternoon those girls that they ore interested in. Parties ore held in the some place and all more or less follow the some pattern . Most of us on the Panhellenic Council think it is a really good ideo . Those that have first rush party hove the lost "coke" party and we all think it a very fair way.

That's about all from up Boston way here. Except for the convention , most of us senior Alpha Sigs ore looking forward to graduation and the rest ore thinking up new and better ideas for next year. So for the time being, Yours in A'2:A, Betty' Michelini

KAPPA KAPPA Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hi, Everyone : Here we go into our lost issue of the Phoenix for this year but somehow it doesn't seem like it will be such a long summer without hearing from all the A'2:As . Convention will be here in no time, and it will be so nice to meet everyone. Kappa Kappa is sending Claire Fritz and Dorothy McCool plus all the gals we con pile into several cars. But convention plans haven't kept us from engaging in all the University affairs.

Our Greek Week-End was a big success, and our song won us second place in the sing competition . After a super Open House evening , we all went to hear and donee to Tony Pastor. At Open House we entertained guests from Penn, Cornell, MIT, and lndionia. We al so had a guest from t he chapter of A'2:A at Indiana State

Temple celebrated the forming of an Army Unit on Campus Friday night with a big Military Ball. Buddy Williams and his band supplied the music-the flogs, uniforms, and swords looked so terrific ! President and Mrs. Johnson led the Grand March and the singing of our .Notional Anthem. This was Temple's first attempt at such a ball and it was a big success.

A'2:A should have several new additions to its flock by the time you read this, for on April 4th , Kappa Kappa held its formal rush party. We had a delicious dinner at Alden Pork Manor for thirty actives, s ix alums, four advisers and patronesses, and thirty-three rushees.

Then we all piled into two buses and went to the Neighborhood Players to see "Guest in the House," a delightful comedy. We hod the whole theater to ourselves and had a wonderful time. Cokes and cakes were served between the acts and we really had a chance to become acquainted with the girl s.

Plans for a white elephant sale, a rummage sale, and a booth at Temple's Block Party for Temple's Tradition Week ore a few of our plans to make money so that all the Kappa Kappas may go to Gratiot. NU NU Drexel Institute of Technology, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hi Sisters!

Things ore progressing very rapidly in our new Panhellenic house . Janet Raughley, Louise Johnson, and Kitty Von Horn certainly have done a grand job fi x ing up our chapter room .

The Nu Nu girls ore going to have their spring lodge week-end on May 7 and 8 . As on annual event we always hove a teo for our Mothers on Mother' s Day. This year we plan to have a parents' day teo so the fathers as well as the mothers may enjoy the beauty of Drexel ' s wonderful lodge .

The week-end before Memorial Day is a big event for all sororities at Drexel. We toke over Ocean City, New Jersey, and a grand and glorious time is guaranteed for every girl. Nu Nu ' s headquarters will be the Biscayne Hotel.

Several dinners seem to be in order for this coming term. We shall have our pledge dinner, initiation dinner, and a farewell dinner for our twenty three si sters who will be leaving us in June .

Quite a number will be graduating in ¡ June but most will be boc k with us in the fall to work for their teaching credentials or do graduate work.

Dear Sisters: It's hard to believe that this is our last news letter for 1948-49, but we certainly hove lots to tell you .

Our Sweetheart Dance, which was held again this year on February 12th, was a great success with June Vallett and Tommy Milsap reigning as our " Sweetheart Couple of 1949." We were so pleased to see many of our alums whirling through the crowd of dancers .

How we wish you all could hove seen our famous " Aihpoquode" at the annual State Fair, March 19th !

Our twelve bathing beauties, wearing red and white striped bathing suits and luminous bathing cops, put on a show that would hove mode Billy Rose s it up and toke notice. The girls were under the tutelage of Jean Feucht, our aquatic wonder, who whipped their superb formations into perfection in short order. Along with the "Alphoquode," we held a fashion show featuring the latest summer creations. Phyl Schlehr was in charge of this port of the program and Pat Joyce did a swell job os narrator. We might odd that over one hundred people were turned away from the door during the second performance because of the limited seating capacity, so you con see what our collegues and their friends thought of the show .

Two weeks ago, at a regular meeting , we elected our new officers for 1949-50. Alice Brinkel was chosen president for the first se mester and Delores Goldsmith was elected president for the second semester. Others who will hold offices next year ore Jean Feucht, vicepresident; Libby O' Connor, recording secretory; Jean De Soto, cor responding secretory; Mary Nowokowsko, treasurer; Carolyn Turner, registrar; Morg Jolly, editor; and Joan Flynn, chaplain . We know they will strive to keep Alpha Sigma Alpha on top.

Fanny Ertel! , our Alpha girl , was also honored at this meeting. She was prese nted with a corsage and serenaded by the other members of the so ror ity.

We topped the evening off with some delicious cake and "coke" and a typical Alpha Sig song fest.

Before closing , we want to mention that more than ten of our seniors have already accepted posi tions for next year. Good luck to you all and to every other Alpha Sig starting on a new career.

Dear Alpha Sigs: Sigma Sigma is just about recuperated now from the wo rry, excitement, and pleasure of our Spring Formal , which was held on April first. For awhile there we were thinking of posting a big sign sa ying " April Fool, no donee!!" when Friday night came around . But the thrill of seeing the finished decorations, and the nice compliments we received, more than compensated for the inevitable difficulties we ran into while carrying out our theme, " Stairway to the Stars."

Practically as soon as " Home Sweet Home" was played, we had to turn our attention toward our books, in preparation for mid-quarter exams . A few of us, su rprisi ngly, were even loo ki ng forward to them, in the hope of making our grades and be ing able to get off "study table," which was reestablished in March .

By the time you read this, Sigma Sigma will have attended another dance as a group; we have been honored by a request to serve at a regional banquet of the Lion's Club, and invited to the dance following with our escorts .

We here in Gunnison can certainly tell that Spring is in the air; Adrienne Marquard has recently been pinned to John Barry of Theta Chi ; Anne Fordham has announced her engagement to Jack Ritter, and passed the traditional chocolates; and Lido Milliken has received a lovely diamond from Edwin "Spud" Batiste, also of Theta Chi .

Before closing, I want to introduce to you our new adviser, Dr. Jeane Fair, who has replaced Miss Vera Clark. We were all very sorry that Miss Clark was unable to continue with us in her previous capacity, but she remains a loyalâ&#x20AC;˘ and loved friend of Alpha Sig . PHI PHI Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, Missouri

Dear Alpha Sigs : Here we are on the last letter for this year. I told you about Phi Phi redecorating our chapter room . It really looks nice! Sea foam green walls, white furniture with bright red slipcovers. We planned and gave a birthday party for our "New" room with each girl bringing a gift to make our room more attractive and "homey."

Some girls brought rugs, others added lamps, ivy plants, etc . Refreshments were served and it turned out to be a lot of fun .

Mrs. Sharp's visit with us was wonderful! She arrived Tuesday, April 5 . We entertained with a formal banquet, an informal banquet, cocktail party, formal initiation, and business meetings in her honor. We were so proud to show her the campus and introduce her to students and faculty members.

The All-Greek Dance turned out to be a lovel y affair on the campus this year. The decorat ions centered around Gree k architecture and sculpture.

Phi Ph i is now starting to plan for our Spring Formal which is to be May 14 . We are plann ing another rum mage sole to raise funds for our projects. The sale we

Audrey Smith , our ' 48-' 49 treasurer of Psi Psi, has been elected as the treasurer of the Associated Women Students.

She will accompany the Dean of Women to New Mexico for the convention of The Southern Association of Women Students. This week Marilyn Finley was chosen as a .me~ber of the Purple Jacket Club, on honorary organization of outstanding women students. We're wishing success in the coming student body election to Peggy Sandifer, as cheerleader, and Audrey Smith as secretory of the Senior Closs.

The pledges offered the members a little diversion from regular school routine with a hiking party. After the trek to the airport, we returned to our house and ate to our heart's content. We all hod a grand time, and feel better acquainted with our sisters, too.

Lost ~inute plans for our spring formal ore being mode now. It will be on " Easter donee" with bunnies chickens, eggs and spring flowers deco~oting the room: Orchestra music will be floating from a Iorge Easter basket in the corner. Punch and cookies, shaped like bunnies, will be served during the donee. Next on our social calendar comes our hayride, and following that our attention turns to our Mo_ther-Dol,Jghter banquet, the lost event of the yeo r.

BETA GAMMA Northeastern State College, Tahlequah, Oklahoma

Dear Sister Alpha Sigs : Beta Gamma chapter has at lost been restored to her place on the Alpha Sig college roll, and ore we ever thrilled; It all happened Tuesday, April 5, after our college s having met NPC's accrediting requirement when Miss Est her Bucher come to Northeastern to for~ molly reactivate our chapter. Oh, happy day!

We began the day's activities with the installation of Ponhellenic officers, followed by a teo. Our own president, Claro Belle Lenox, was installed as vicepresident. Before the ceremonies, however, notional representatives from the three sororities on our campus prsented the charters to the outgoing officers.

Then Alpha Sigmas began their own festivities with a dinner in the college cafeteria . At that time we song the good ole' Alpha Sig songs we hod missed during the post year. After dinner we formally initiated fifteen girls followed by the ceremony for the installation of a new chapter, and finally installation of officers for the coming year. Several members of the Muskogee alumnae cnapter attended the ceremon ies and were entertained with a late teo following the activities.

But to go bock to the year's activities, we began our season with a formal rush party staged in the form of .. a Gypsy Teo Room, and the following Friday pledged fourteen girls. Since then we hove pledged and initiated two more.

When class elections come up, Zumo Smith was named junior representative to the student council.

Four of our girls, Doris and Barbaro Johnson sisters Martha Lee Poyner, and yours truly were named for th~ editorial staff of the yearbook. Yours truly also took over as editor of the student newspaper.

When Homecoming rolled around, Alpha Sigs won second place with their float. The float represented a throne atop which sot our Sweetheart, Elois (Fry) Woods.

On December eleventh, the six Gree k organizations on the campus gave on All-Greek donee with a huge lighted Christmas tree in the middle of the room. Our annual Sweetheart donee was given on February 12.

Just lost week we gave a matinee donee, on activity which has become quite popular thi s spring on our campus. The college donee bond, in order to raise money with which to buy music, ploys for a two-hour donee on Thursday afternoons, sponsored by different organizations, for a per cent of the proceeds.

Since we last corresponded with you all , several of our girls hove said their "I do' s." They ore Betty Williams, LaVelle Short, Althea Herring, 路 Dorothy King, Elois Fry, Lou Ida Lookabaugh, Leona Spicer, Betty Furr, Pat Thompson, and Coleene Ferris.

Backing her will be Irene Blair, vice-pres ident; Lois Early, secretary; Elise Bellenot, treasurer; Dorothy Wainwright, regi strar; Peggy Carter, chaplain; and Ruth Harshbarger, editor.

We were very much honored recently when one of our seniors, Emil y Pierce, had two of her musical compositions presented by the Madison Glee Club . The songs, " Hymn of Praise" and "Mystic Prayer, " are among fourteen other solo and chorus pieces that she has composed . We are justly proud of our Emily.

With Ma y right around the corner, big plans for May Day have already been started . Our contribution to the May Court will be Betty Weller, Jennie Snowden, Nancy Bryant, Katherine Collie, Mary Ellen Neathers, Mary Ruda s ill , Betty Gray Scott, and Rebecca Settle.

Plans for the rest of the year are flying thick and fast; there ' s the hope of entertaining the A"2:.A chapter from Farmville here; the annual Senior Breakfast; and then, the Open House for the ather sororities here that we have been planning for so long .

And, of course, we are already casting an eye around for A"2:.A material in the incoming sophomore class; there ore so many wonderful girls that we don't want to miss a one.

BETA THETA Central Michigan College of Education, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan Dear Alpha Sigs : Beta Theta has appointed its new officers and we "tired old officials" are packing up ow portfolios, awaiting the new administration . The platform of the new officers seems to be similar to the former "party" and only a few changes are expected on minor issues . As in the past, the policy for the memorial week-end will be a trip to Valhalla at Walloon Lake . All party members shall be at liberty to swim , play tennis, go boating, play volley ball, and ride. A big crowd is expected since we have ten new members. Yes, Tillie's Blind Pig again was a success and we are all excited about our new pledges.

With spring weather here we also anticipate wiener roasts, intramural softball and most of all our formal dance with our brother frat, TAU , at Mt. Pleasant Country Club.

We have celebreties amongst us . Margaret "Boxie" Bochstahler was elected president of Associated Women Students and takes her office in May. This April she will participate in a national convention of A.W.S. in New Mexico.

Joan Souci has been nominated for May Queen .

We' re all giving her our staunch support so, how can she lose.

Mickey Cherette, our new president, has been elected our delegate to our national convention, and we all hope to come and join her in the fun .

No need to say more, except that we're mighty proud of these new officers and ore positive they wiU corry Bl through with flying colors next year.

We've recently hod formal initiation for the fourteen new members, and the candlelight ceremony was extremely impressive, as usual. After the initiation the new members were presented with corsages of red carnations, and were entertained with a party given by the old members . And imagine our surprise when the new gals presented us with a table model radio for the chapter room! We certainly ore enjoying this latest addition to the room.

The week-end of May 21 will find the A~As on their annual cabin party up on Little River, about 15 miles from town . Of course (and as usuoll we'll travel up there in trucks, sleep in the born, and hove a marvelous time. The cabin party is one of the most looked -forwardto events of the year for the Beta lotos, and we've been making plans for weeks.

As soon as spring weather comes, we're going to hove a Treasure Hunt in honor of the other two soro rities on campus. The girls and their dotes will be invited, and climaxing the hunt will be refreshments served down at Cricket Hearth, the outdoor fireplace.

On the afternoon of June 3 we're going to hove a Mother-Patroness service. This will be the first such service Bl has hod for several leors, and nearly every girl is hoping to hove her mother here and present her with a Mother-Patroness pin . After the service, we're planning to hove open house for the fathers and other relatives who will be here for graduation .

This year has been quite on eventful one for Beta Iota, and we hope for all our sister chapters as well.

Here's hoping next year will be on even bigger and better one for all Alpha Sigs everywhere!

BETA KAPPA Western State College, Macomb, Illinois Dear Alpha Sigs : We're all eagerly pocking our suitcases early in the week. Thursday is the beginning of spring vocation and we feel as though we need it after these rough six-week tests. Bev Boll is going to relax during her vocation in the Ozark mountains. She's camping out for five days.

Most of us feel a s though we'd rather camp elsewhere than with mountain lions. Mary Reilly will be spending her free time that week with another gal friend in New York City. Neither one hove been there so they're really going to "point the town red ." Pot Longford's aunt in .Milwaukee, Wisconsin, told Pot she'd pay for her train ticket if she'd visit her a few days, so that's where Pot will be.

The Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity elected Anolu Pointer as their queen. They're planning a big boll for next month and Anolu is going to reign over it. What a thrill for her! 路 The Women's Athletic Assoc iation has a new president. It's our own peppy Ela ine Sperry. She has more vim, vigor and vitality than any ten of us.

It seemed very nice to open the lost Phoenix and discover Mildred Kock's picture on one of the pages.

"Cookie" graduated two years ago and none of us ever thought she'd be working on a newspaper in Hawaii.

However, we're glad she likes it.

Our seventh annual Cotton Boll was lost Friday. We

even hod a floor show. Elaine Sperry did a wonderful job as mistress of ceremonies. She was called the lost minute to do it because June Posey become ill. "Pose," our only senior, was really sod for a few minutes, but after she heard Elaine was going to replace her, she knew her worries were over . Jean Simms played the piano and Anolu song, "It's Darkness on the Delta" in that throaty voice of hers, Our engaged couple, Joan Lierly and Morris Hill , song a duet, and we hod a few guests from different campus fraternities perform .

June Anderson, a lost year graduate, is spending the week with us. She's teaching in Kewanee .

It won't be too long and this school year will be over.

To some, it's been just another nine months. It's nothing new-nothing old-just nine months of eating, sleeping and a little studying . However, to most of the Alpha Sigs, it's more than that. These months hove meant a lot to us. We've met new people and we've gotten to know them better. We've even invited them to become our sisters and we've . grown to love them more and more each day. We've learned more than that toowe've learned how to fill our days with satisfying activities and enjoy these activities to the utmost. We've learned more and more to follow our creed so that not only this year could be happy for us but all those to come . We hate to see it end .

BETA LAMBDA Arkansas State Teachers College, Conway, Arkansas Dear Sisters : We wish that we could invite you all to our birthday party which is the week-end of April eighth. We're expecting alumnae from near and for and the week-end is to be pocked full of fun and activity.

We ore starting the festivites with on informal party Friday night in the sorority room to get acquainted with . new faces and reminiscence with old friends. Business meetings will be held Saturday with the spotlight on our alumni chapter.

A lovely garden scene will be the frame for our "Arbor Frolic" on Saturday night. After the dance we will attend a buffet supper given by our patronesses, Mrs. Sam Fausett, Mrs. C. A. Archer, and Miss Helen Collier.

Our week-end will be closed after attending church Sunday with a luncheon to be held at the Commons.

BETA MU Henderson State Teachers College, Arkadelphia, Arkansas Dear Alpha Sigs: Several honors hove come to some of our members since the last Phoenix. For instance, Eornestine Carrol was elected State President of the Arkansas Home Economics Club at the annual state convention . Then, too, the four main officers for next year's Student Christian Association Council ore all Alpha Sigs . President is Emily Hobbs, backed up by Doris Chambers as vice-president.

Carolyn Wilson and Eornestine Carrol ore secretory and treasurer respectively. So we ore assured of a grand SCA Council for next year.

Our party at the Country Club was loads of fun. We had a picnic supper followed by cards, dancing, and a song fest.

We are making plans for Reddie Da y activities and plans will soon be made for our social event in May. Elizabeth Day, our new president, will be the convention delegate from Beta Mu, but plans are already being made for more girls to go. We hope to have a car full of Alpha Sigs and maybe even a bus load if we go in with Beta Lambda chapter.

We have three new pledges-Carolyn Wilson, Oleta Waldon, and Joann Rachus-and we are mighty proud of them.

We'll be looking forward to seeing lots of you at convention.

BETA NU Murray State Teachers College, Murray, Kentucky

Dear Alpha Sigs: Now that "Apri I Showers" have about subdued and May is well on its way, it isn't hard to realize that the school year is nearly finished.

Looking back over the past months, it seems that Beta Nu coeds have been as busy as "beavers." Jane Earl Johnson, who is our new prexy, Barbara Bigham, and Mickie Turk were Beta Nu's contribution to the list of Camps Favorites. Barbara and Jane also placed first and second in A. C. E.'s best dressed contest with Mickie in fifth place.

Chosen by the students as the best dance of the year, Beta Nu's "Mistletoe Ball," held on December 15, featured Bill Shelton and his orchestra. Decorations were in blue and silver with a huge si lver tree t-rimmed with blue lights dominating the scene. Across the ceiling were cords from which silver stars hung and in the center of the floor a "big as life" snow man stood, complete with black derby. Miss Murray State and the nine campus favorites were presented to the students at the dance . As his last number, Shelton played a special arrangement of the Alpha Sigma Alpha "Sweetheart Song," and happy, tired Beta Nus danced with their escorts beneath the "Kissing Ring.': Beta Nu seems to have priority on Pram Queens; last spring Barbara Bigham reigned at Junior-Senior Prom and Mary Lou King will wear the crown this year. Roy, as she is affectionately known , won by a great majority of votes.

Ann Lowery, our retiring president, had the leading role in the thriller, "Ladies in Retirement," Alpha Psi Omega 's spring production . Another Beta Nu in the cast was Faye Edwards. The critics gave bath Ann and Faye some super notices. " The Big Top" opened its flaps for those rushees who attended the rush party on March 2 . The invitations were in the form of little red tents with double doors cut 路 in the center which opened revealing the written invitation . Entertainment was provided by Egyptian

dancing ladies, a bearded lady, clowns, Hawaiian dane~ ers, a strong lady, and, of course, the traditional circus "band," under the direction of "Conductor" Jane E. Johnson. Salt water taffy was thrown among the rushees by the clowns and at intermission, hot dogs and pop were "sold" by "venders." ' Another star in Beta Nu's crown was the recent selection of Ann Crisp as editor of the College News for 1949-50. Ann is the first woman editor since 1947.

Barbara Bigham, one of our most outstanding Beta Nu members, has become a member of Who's Who. Barbara is a senior and we shall certainly miss her in Alpha Sig. This is Convention year and we here at Murray can hardly wait until August!! Jane Earl is Beta Nu's official representative and five of her officers will make the trip to Port Huron with her.

Dear A"'2.As: We have been pretty busy in Detroit since the last issue of the Phoenix. To begin with rushing, I'll tell you a little about our last party for this school year.

The party was held on the 20th of February at the home of Charlotte Marburger. Being so near George Washington's birthday, our invitations and nametags were made in the form of cherries. And for dessert we naturally had . . . cherry pie.

On the 11th of March the following girls pledged our chapter: Shirley Cloud, Margaret Dunn, Nadya Dubovenko, Barbara Grisdale, and Eillen O'Sullivan. They are now wearing the red and white pledge caps which denote Alpha Sigs on the Wayne caml?us.

The formal pledging ceremony was held in the Student Center where a tea was given in honor of the prospective members. The five girls were presented with red and white carnation corsages.

Elections were held at our last meeting . Let me present: president, Kay Hellier; vice-president, Jean Carter; secretary, Kay Stilwell; treasurer, Shirley Asher; registrar, Martha Bickel; chaplain, Elayne Stilwell; and editor, Jacqueline Joly.

We are all looking forward to seeing all of you at Gratiot Inn in August. I hope that you'll have time to visit our city while you're here for the convention. Port Huron isn't very far from Detroit and I'm sure you would enjoy sightseeing here . That's oil now from Detroit.

Dear Sisters in A"'2.A: Since you last heard from us, we have been very busy. During the month of February we acquired two new patronesses, Mrs. Violet Bailey and Mrs. Sally Frield . The ceremony was held at the home of our adviser, Mrs. Virginia Alrutz . Dainty refreshments were served to the sorority members and our patronesses.

Here at Concord the students are very sports-minded and Beta Pi has shown up favorably, winning the bas-

MAY, 1949 ketboll tournament and tying for second place in the swimming meet.

On March 20 , we formally initiated seven girls : Phyllis Holliday, Pauline McCown, Katherine Mayhew, Margaret Tonner, Louise Magyar, Wando Mulkey, and Mary Lou Beorre. Breakfast was served by our patronesses and adviser at Mrs. Virginia Gerold's home. At this time, Wando Mulkey, having attained the highest scholastic overage, was presented with a crested Alpha ring . After breakfast we attended . church in a group.

Next come the Candy Cone Formal which was given by the preps. The color scheme of red and white was used throughout this very successful donee. Pauline McCown , who was chosen as best prep, was presented with a sorority bracelet. Mrs. Virginia Alrutz was presented with a boquet of white carnations.

Mary Dolinger, our chaplain and one of the charter members of Beta Pi, was chosen as our candidate for the Elizabeth Bird Small Award .

It seems our chapter has become very conventionminded with three members, Phyllis Holliday, Florence Kozakiewicz, and Mary Dolinger planning to attend .

I almost forgot-at one of our meetings we were presented with a box of candy by Sarah White who has rerecently become engaged.

BETA RHO Northern Illinois State Teachers College, DeKalb, Illinois Dear Alpha Sigma Sisters: 路 Rush, rush, rush, is what the members of Beta Rho hove been doing . We formally installed four new members during winter quarter. We ore now in the midst of Spring rush week. Beta Rho entertained twenty-four interested girls at a delightful "coke party." We plan to hove a pledging ceremony, followed by a formal dinner, sometime near the middle of April.

We ore now busily planning a Spring donee, too, which will be held for the student body during the lost port of April. The nome of our Spring donee is the "Cotton Toil Cut Up ." It will feature the wearing of cotton clothes by all those attending the donee.

Beta Rho will lose nine senior members this spring .

We ore sorry to see them go, but ore wishing them all of the best in their chosen teaching profession .

45 BETA SIGMA Southwest Missouri State College, Springfield, Missouri Dear A'J:.A Sisters: How time flies-it seems only yesterday when we were struggling along in the first days of the school year but here it is time to wind up another season for dear old A'J:.A. On April Fool 's Day, a local donee club will be transferred into a virtual bunnylond where Alpha Sig Alphas from Beta Sigma and their dotes will donee to the musi c of Forrest Wasson . A downtown deportment store has offered us the use of a real live bunny (really a girl) who will preside over our guest book at the door. The costume is darling-long white duck trousers with a royal purple toil coot and yellow buttons. As guests go in to the main donee floor they will step through a huge hobbit silhouette. Huge balloons around the floor will represent Easter eggs and pranksters who decide to puncture the balloons will be reworded with a shower of confetti. We ore proud to hove Jackie LeVeske, Joan Green, Char ThJUSton, Lee Rue and Marilyn Moiklie from the Zeta .Zeta chapter at Warrensburg as our special guests. Local readers of our school April Fool's edition might hove been confused reading the account of the donee. In the Springfield On Display Show, Alto well represented Beta Sigma by a rela xed pose in shorts and shirt in the local newspaper.

More publicity has been falling our way-next week will be the Cancer Drive again for A'J:.As and five sorority girls were photographed hard at work in our booth in the Administration Building .

The formation of a Ponhellenic Council is being conducted at Sothwest Missouri State and our representatives will be photographed a s charter members. We report also that we hove just welcomed a new sorori ty on our campus, the Alpha Delta Pis. To odd the Beta Sigma touch to our wonderful sum mer convention, Martha Jo Lethco and June Routh will attend . More of us hope to travel to Gratiot Inn but hove to wait for the extra money it will toke.
