THE PHOENIX THE ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA CONSTITUTION 路 In line with the progressive policies of Alpha Sigma Alpha the 1930 convention provided for the revision of the sorority's constitution.

Delegates assembled at Estes Park in August, 1932 formally adopted the revised constitution which has been printed and is now ready for distribution.

Many changes have been made in the laws of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The new constitution is compact and complete, and will give you information of convention procedure, financial policies, endowment fund and the like.

AN ALUMNA VIEWS THE SORORITY HOUSE A certain prominent dean has stated that the origin of the sorority lies in the housing problem. Whether that is your theory or whether you believe in instincts and particularly in that famous one, the gregarious, no one 路 can deny that the sorority house is, today, an interesting and challenging problem. When houses built for forty now house eighteen, when those with a capacity of twelve have but six, and when, in a two-year period, the number living in sorority houses on a given campus has decreased one-third, the Greek-letter house, too, must be arraigned with other institutions of a depressionburdened nation.

To the undergraduate, the sorority house spells prestige, for, as in the business world, so in the college world, one would impress others with material wealth. On a campus where houses are the custom, there must be a house, but how much more pride is displayed when that edifice is located within the sacred "district"! Then, too, a more flexible routine than is afforded by the dormitory, the smaller housing unit, and the very feminine desire for a house of one's own have their adherents.

However, when the undergraduate's tassel has acquired a permanent position on the left side of the mortarboard and she, herself, has become a "passive" to younger sisters, what is her attitude?

First of all, she has not lost her pride in her sorority, and she feels, even yet, a wee glow when she thinks of how imposing is the structure of Alpha Beta Gamma. But, perhaps she is a trustee. At the last meeting of the building company the actives were found to be in arrears on the rent, or maybe the latest letter from the chapter mentioned a welcome concession from the landlord. And so the alumna grows serious; her memory skips back and carefully reviews the years. Specific instances group themselves into generalizations, and she writes: I. The smaller housing unit, because it is more nearly like the family unit and has less of the institutionalized aspect, affords a greater feeling of security and permanency to the individual. A sorority house whose residents have at least one common interest, the sorority, is more likely to contain a group with greater homogeneity in interests and ideals than the nonsorority house and hence provide a happier atmosphere.

2. The sorority relationship makes possible greater frankness among residents of the sorority house than among residen~s of the university house. Roommates, suitemates, and housemates are wont to have definite and helpful ideas about one's personality defects.

when the monthly electric bill is not a matter of personal interest!

4- The sorority house girl has greater opportunity to participate in living arrangements. She acquires through experience a sense of economic values. Furthermore, she is often able 路to express her own individuality in furnishings. (The alumna smiles as she remembers the study room furniture which changed color three times in about twice that number of years and the new dining room furniture her class joyously stained and polished.)

5路 The sorority _house provides a non-academic laboratory in which girls may learn the social graces. The spreads, the small parties, the teas that are so naturally and graciously given!

If it is a sorority affair, of course everyone participates; self. . conscwusness 1s no excuse.

6. A house offers a campus home to the alumna. In three years her own college friends are gone. She may not know the names even of the actives in her own chapter. Yet if there is a house, maybe the same house in which she lived, there is added incentive to return to the alma mater. (Here the alumna pauses. She is remembering how good it was last Homecoming to gather around the fire with friends of her college days.

She had had only a few, unexpected hours in the city so had written to no one; others had done likewise; but there they were, brought together at "the house." Her eyes rests upon a letter from Dot who enthusiastically describes her recent weekend at that "house.")

The alumna muses over her list. "Yes," she thinks, "there are at least these ways in which the sorority house has important ad vantages. " The lines of an absurd bit of verse run through her head.

"There is no house like our house, Even in heaven; There is no family like our family, Even in heaven;" "Egotistical-yes indeed, but unattainable-! am not so sure.

It all depends on the sorority."

THE MYTHOLOGICAL PHOENIX Erma King, PP

The Phoenix is a mythological Egyptian bird, which has been used in many myths down through the ages. Pliny believes there is only one Phoenix in existence at a time. When the end is near for this bird he builds in Arabia a nest of twigs of Cassia and Frankincense and then dies upon it. From the body a worm is generated which develops into a new Phoenix.

The young bird then covers up his father's body and carries it to Heliopolis and burns it upon the altar there.

According to Horapollo the Phoenix casts himself upon the ground and receives a wound, from the icher of which springs his successors.

The most familiar version is given by Physiologus, in which the bird burns itself upon a nest or pyre of odoriferous woods and the young Phoenix springs from the ashes.

Herodotus says he heard the story at Heliopolis and saw a picture of the bird there, and also that the Phoenix, on the death of his father, embalms the body in an egg made of myrrh and every five hundred years conveys it from Arabia to the temple of the sun at Heliopolis.

The interval between the bird's appearance at Heliopolis is variously stated; usually five hundred years, but 1461 and 7006 years are also given. According to Tacitus, the Phoenix appeared four 6mes in Egypt: 1-under Sesostris; 2-under Amasis II; 3-under Ptolemy III; 4-in the year 34 B.C. In Greek and Roman art the Phoenix was commonly represented as an eagle. The Egyptians who called it the "bennu" depicted it as a heron with two long feathers growing from the back of its head and sometimes with a tuft hanging from its breast. It symbolized the morning sun rising out of the glow of dawn, and hence it was looked upon as the sacred bird of the Sun God, Re. It also represented the new sun of today springing from the body of the old sun of yesterday which had entered the lower world and become one with Osiris. Hence the Phoenix was regarded as a manife tation of Osiris and became a symbol of resurrection.

IS IT JUST A JOB YOU WANT? Buzz-z-z Is that the 8 o'clock bell? Mercy! I must rush or that class of college Sophomores may walk out if I am not there on time!-Thus a day may start for . a member of some faculty-somewhere-anywhere. Nine o'clock may find one rushing into the Kindergarten room to see that the studentteachers and children are getting started on the day's activities. Here she may be greeted by a cheery "Bonjour"-the 5-year-olds are holding French Class. A rap at the doorJunior's mother wishes to confer about the character report sent home the day before concerning her son's progress in school. Scarcely is this interview ended when a call to the telephone finds one signed up to speak at a County Institute some Saturday not far hence. Back at the desk-a pile of lesson plans to check!! Here comes that class in Test and Measurements, Dr. So-and-so has asked for a demonstration in administering pre-school tests. Little Kennie has had his orange juice and rest so is all ready-Off to the Demonstration Room!

Once more emerging into the hall, one is greeted by the president of the Day Student Women's Organization asking that in the capacity of Advisor you speak to the girls at a noon meeting on a matter of special campus interest. Just before leaving, this competent president reminds you of the dance the following Saturday night and hopes to see you there.

Checking this date on the calendar you note that Baby Clinic meets this Wednesday; Oh Yes, and College Club Tuesday evening. Thursday you recall is the tea at which you have been asked to pour. Let's see-today is Monday and the first Monday evening in the month means a Parent-Teacher's Meeting!-Just two more college classes and a teaching conference this afternoon, climaxed by a faculty meeting-and that will be a day-with perhaps an occasional Insurance or Book Agent thrown in!

Next June will find many Alpha Sigs . along with other graduates out in the world looking for jobs. Our present economic situation is teaching the American people, as a group, to appreciate "work"-not only work to supply physical and

financial needs but also to meet a mental need. The busy person is usually a happy individual. Joy in one's daily tasks lifts work out of the class of "Just a Job" and makes it real "LIFE." S. June Smith, KK.

LOYALTY TO ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA Now that we are in the midst of the rushing season, my mind flashes back to the thrilling and happy times just one year ago when I, as a Freshman, was being rushed. In a very short period I experienced a deep conviction, through my association with the girls, of the meaning of loyalty to our beloved Alpha Sigma Alpha. This feeling comes to us most strongly when we make our final pledge to the sorority in one of the most impressive ceremonies I have experienced, and if ever loyalty could be instilled in anyone it is at this time.

As my life slowly unfolded to the benefits and to the beautiful things about sorority life I discovered that one of these which most impressed me was the simplicity and naturalness with which the girls cooperate one with the other. We have our problems as any other organization, but we are fortunate in having an excellent President who scolds and loves us and before long, through her guidance, and our respect for her and each other, we realize that our differences of opinions may be selfish ones and that this is not true loyalty to the sorority. I can remember vividly those trying days of quarantine when it was difficult for anyone to communicate with the quarantined girls. It was a testing period for them but they came through with flying colors and in spite of all predictions, are still "sisters." During these days the girls in the house put their clever heads together and helped each other in keeping up their morale. They were true to our ideals of sorority girls and to Alpha Sigma Alpha.

To me loyalty to our sorority embraces the advancement of the interest of each sister and always showing consideration for the girl who wears no Greek letter pin; it means that no one shall speak destructively in any way about the sorority or other people; that we will try to obey the rule set down for us and

that we shall be proud of our sorority and our sisters; and that we shall have the art of social living and display it to the best of our ability at all times; in summary, to what of any of our principles and to the symbolism of our pin, should any thoughtful, cultured and educated sister dare fail to be loyal? Our mottoes are splendid with high ideals and as we strive for these, loyalty will be the certain result.

No doubt it is impossible for us to attain perfection, but in striving we are taking into 路consideration the meaning of our sorority in our present and future life. If we are loyal now we will be loyal later and so be true not just sometimes but always, keeping in mind the thought: "To thine own self be true, And it must follow as the night the day Thou cans't not then be false to any man."

EDITORIAL-TO THOSE WHO DIRECT With the semester break, course changes, schedule changes as well as the dropping-out and enrolling of students, new faces and new vows to oneself to strive for the almighty "A" come other changes in the college routine of a semester. There are changes in student leaders which include the Student Council, Student Assembly and class officers. To these students, who give of their time and talents, certainly a tribute is due.

Work of the calibre done by the student assembly chairman is that which takes careful planning, competent organizing and never-ending patience. For these efforts the chairman is usually only severely criticized when one program doesn't meet the desire of some radical student, when really the chair. man's efforts have been exercised to their maximum of ability.

Student co-operation and willing participation no doubt are factors which show the brightest on the stage but is it not wise to think that back of every program was someone or some

THE PHOENIX small group of persons who had the responsibility of planning the numbers?

This contribution of gratitude to those persons who so willingly led a hard-to-satisfy audience, and who put forth the best they had to enlighten those who had chosen them, is the most trivial we can give them for their services.

AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER Did you ever help with a Vacation Bible School? Well, it may not sound so interesting, but really it's loads of fun as well as being profitable. This past summer I helped for three weeks, in fact, that was as long as the school lasted. The school was held in a Parish House which belongs to one of our big Episcopal churches here in the city. The house is located in a very poor section of the city, and so, of course, the children who came were of the poorer class. The district is populated with Negroes, Italians, and Hungarians with a few Americans included.

The first morning that we held the school there were twenty-five present. But by the third morning, we had one hundred and twenty pupils. Sounds like a fairy tale, but it's the truth! It happens that the children who came the first morning liked it so well that they spread the news abroad, and we had the result in increased numbers. The Negroes did not come, but the Italians were there in large numbers. Some fair, some dark, some fat, and some small. They were all just as cute as they could be. Of course, it was necessary to overlook little matters such as dirt, for every child does not have three or four dresses to change to when one becomes dirty. There is generally only one dress, and when that gets dirty-to bed the child goes. So, it is a big problem. However, clean and smiling faces are the things that count. We all had a grand three weeks together, learning songs and games and listening to stories. It all ended with a big picnic. We arranged for a bus which took us all to the large picnic grounds located about ten miles away. There we swam and played games all day.

It was a tired but happy bunch of youngsters that went home that day. It was a good way to end the school, and I expect it will long be a memory to the kiddies. I know that I'll never forget it. It was an experience I'll long cherish. So if you want to do something profitable as well as enjoyable, just teach in a Vacation Bible School where the children do not have such opportunities as we have had.

IN A CHOIR LOFT The music of the great organ rolled upon me, overwhelmed me, shook my timid heart; I held back frightened, then started forth in a panic-! was being left behind; I could not enter alone. It seemed ages till I caught up with them and gained my place in the procession. We swung down the aisle with slow measured steps-left foot, teeter tqtter; right foot, teeter totter; left swing, right swing; keep time; look up; look up; heart calm yourself, calm yourself-; all the way to the choir loft. It was our first Sunday. None of us had ever before made a public appearance. What agonies we suffered.

The first ordeal had passed without any great mishappenings; seated, I had just breathed a sigh of relief when I noticed that everyone else was standing-! alone sat. I seemed to weigh a thousand pounds. I was glued to the chair. I had a stroke of paralysis. I could not stir. Screwing up my strength, I gave a mighty heave and there I stood with all my fellow choristers. The organ began its fearful rumbling, while at just the proper moment our leader gave a reassuring smile, inclined her head, which was the signal for us to get ready, then displayed an expression of most profound surprise. My fellow sufferers (I had thought them so calm and collected), stood with gaping mouths issuing not a sound. The organist, ingenious, God-sent man, was repeating the chord over and over. After this harmonious but monotonous combination of sounds had been played several times in each of its variations, we found our voices and a remnant of that invincible courage peculiar to youth. With an impetus marvelous to hear we sent out the first note of the song. Full and strong it soared to the high vaulted roof, bellowed, resounded, and finally died away into an almost inaudible whine, just as our newly acquired bravado welled and grew, then oozed into nothingness.

There was a bass and soprano duet in the song. I was the soprano; the bass was a stout girl to my right. At one part of the duet she was to take a very low tone while I was to take a very high tone, at the same time. A most horrible fear gnawed at my entrails at the precise moment that I was to

THE PHOENIX take my high note. Up my quavering voice went, up, up, up.

I could not stop it; it would not go down; it would not stay still; but imbued with the spirit of the edifice in which I found myself, and it itself, that note was hastening ever upward and onward. The bass seemed possessed with the same pangs; for her note kept sliding down, down, down-I, up-her, downtill I ended in a wail and she in a grunt. Shortly afterwards the song was finished with a hearty, thankful "Amen." As we sat down the whole choir loft trembled as if struck by a fit of Saint Vitus' disease.

There were a few minutes of silent prayer, after our selection had been completed. The minister sat, bent nearly double, his head in his hands, quivering in the very earnestness ot his plea. The congregation sat with bowed heads in a convulsion of prayer, but the little boys on the front row impiously nudged each other while their elders pleaded for their souls.

With the sermon well upon its way and the horrors safely behind us a species of hysteria enveloped the chorus. Away in the back of the church the janitor sat, tilted back against the wall, his jaws hanging open, sound asleep. A sight such as this would have been comical at any time, but now something disturbed his slumber, he stirred uneasily and gave a blind bat at the insect which apparently settled on one of his dangling legs. He lost his balance and the chair came crashing, but no, his feet hit the floor first, saved the day and awakened the man. A twitter swept over our corner of the church.

Someone punched me, pointing to a small boy sitting upon his mother's lap. He was pinching both her cheeks. He whispered some deep secret into her inatteq.tive ear. She sat immovable as the Sphinx. He pulled the corners of her mouth into a downlike grin. Still she sat like a true Stoic. He pulled the corners of her mouth down, producing a very pleasing effect. He giggled delightedly. The imp yanked one corner up and one corner down, liked the result and tried the same thing with her eyes. His experiment was a huge success. He burst into peals of joyous, baby laughter. Gasps, forced coughs, muffied laughs issued from the loft above the wearied minister's head. In desperation the poor man pronounce~ the

benediction and, with the end of that, once more began our awful march, truly a pilgrims' progress.

Oh, the agony of that fear. Or was it self-consciousness?

Just looking back upon that day I feel that my fear was ridiculous, but when I put myself into the part again, I am overcome, and I wish that the earth might open and swallow me. I wanted to be there, to be in the thing, to have some of the honor. I was deathly afraid to go; yet I dared not stay away though I died a thousand deaths in going.

Fear, self-consciousness, and hysteria, three great terrors of youth. Each man has his portion of them, but some overcome these curses more easily than others. Will they ever cease to menace the general happiness of the young world?

GARDENS, OLD AND NEW What a lovely subject to study these spring months when so many of us are thinking gardens, planning gardens, and planting gardens.

Old gardens-can you not catch the perfume of our grandmother's gardens? Let us slip into one of these on an early spring morning and wander along the worn brick walls between stiff hedges of pittosporum and dwarf box. Those who planted these gardens are gone, but the clove pinks will be there with their spicy fragrance, and old-fashioned honeysuckle runs riot over fences gray with age.

Our grandmothers seemed to have planted their gardens for fragrance-sweet olives, lilacs, calcyanthus, cape jasmines are the very essence of these old gardens. These shrubs with the spring bulbs; the tiny yellow jonquils, now becoming so rare, the single hyacinth, blue and white, and the tube roses were found in all these old-old gardens.

There was a formality in the planting of these gardensclipped hedges of pittosporum, set beds of gay annuals and perennials, walks leading to seats, summer houses, or trellis.

Almost every old southern yard had its cape jasmines-these great bushy shrubs with their shiny green leaves and wavy bios-

THE PHOENIX soms so heavily scented often bordered the walk leading from the gate to the front steps of the old house.

There were lovely trees, oaks, cedars, magnolias, crepe myrtle, pecans, pears and figs.

In the planting of these gardens and the gardens of our time there have been many changes, the greatest of which has been the turning away from the formal arrangement to the natural landscaped gardens of the day.

Many of our old Louisiana homes and gardens are in such a state of decay that we find only the old trees. These giant sentinels stand old and stately in avenues up to the entrances of houses. Always there are the oaks, each different with their wide spreading branches and drooping grey moss. In many of these yards we still find the cloudy pink crepe myrtle~ fig, and pear trees twisted and old. There may be huge wisteria vines and honeysuckle running wild.

One of our loveliest 路 old gardens was that of the Valcour Aimes. It is now in decay. It was one of the most handsome of our old plantations. It has been said that a visit to this garden was like a trip to fairyland. Rare shrubs are there yet, overgrown with vines and crowded with weeds, and the outlines of the elaborate garden once so dear to the heart of the French.

Through this spacious garden there ran a tiny stream, so narrow that it is said a "long legged" man could step across; yet it was spanned at intervals by bridges of various designs and its banks were a long mass of blooming, violets. There were summer houses draped with foreign looking vines .. There was also a mountain of violets, a solid bed blooming from base to summit.

In and around Natchitoches are many lovely gardens. One is called Melrose. It is full of the spirit of the South. Upon -entering the gate and winding driveway, the visitor is delighted with the color and foliage of many blooming plants and there are the sweet odors of tulips, lilacs, roses, violets, and sweet olives. Loyalty to our native woods is shown by the presence of hollyhocks, red buds, and dogwoods. Especially beautiful are the berries during the fall and winter months. Cane River Lake is just in front of the garden. It is lovely with water

lilies while the banks appear tropical, though all the plants are cypical of the Natchitoches Spanish dagger, Spanish dragon, and cattails.

There are various other famous and beautiful gardens in Louisiana. They are of many types: plantation home gardens, Creole gardens, modern naturalized gardens, courtyard ga~足 dens, large ones and small ones-but all lovely, for all of Lomsiana is a garden.

I Darkness gathered in the turns of the path as I hurried and stumbled along. The outlines of the forest loomed in the distance and the huge trees marched past. As I walked I gathered closer about me the folds of the long black cape, against the rising winds of the night. At the end of the dim vista of forest path, something white, formed itself. Toward this whiteness I struggled on over the knobby hill region. Somewhere behind the silently growing woods I heard the lost gurgle of a distant brook. Further on, I knew that behind the blanket of foliage was the pool where the brook stops to rest before tumbling into the sea, because here the frogs chant and mourn at evenmg.

II I could hear the sea dashing itself on white, jagged rocks now. The wind had risen like this the night Jack had diedJack who was Mother O'Brien's oldest son. The sea had been angry too, cross dashing in all directions. The waters had seamed into a thousand channels, were convulsed, heaving, tossing, hailing and hissing. Up onto the rocks it was whirled and thrown, sending up a shriek and roar to meet the awful wind of that other night three years ago.

The "Virginia Lee" had met a water spout that night and

Jack had been thrown against the boom and injured, but it had been three days after they heard of the accident, that the men had brought him home. Three days of anxious, dryeyed, waiting while Mother O'~rien had beds, bandages, and medicines ready. Three days while she bustled and baked, getting every thing ready so that she might take care of her boy, who was coming home from the sea to stay with her-perhaps for a long time.

Then had come the men with their burdened tread, carrying Jack up the path in their arms. The stones of the path shone green and blue, in the light of the storm sky, as heavy rubber boots pushed them aside.

They laid him down and stood, heavy fishing oils on, caps in hand, just the way they had come from the schooner to which Jack had been transferred. Their heads hung and they watched to see what the mother would do. They knew that it was too late and that she must surely see that this was true . .

Jack died that night. He never knew that it was his mother's arms who held him. Then she had sat for many hours moaning and crying softly while neighbors slunk into the room, milled around, and then departed. They came staring at the little house, whispered among themselves of how sad it was that her oldest son should die. Then all filed away except the watchers who must stay up all night, for whom there must be refreshments, and entertainment. Jack must have a fine wake.

In the morning they brought from the inland town, rough pine boards which still smelled pungently. Out of these the neighbors made a box.

Next day they buried Jack, with the shark's tooth that he had gotten off the Tampa coast, the bit of red coral, and a green barnacle which had been taken from the keel of the "Virginia Lee" before the last time it had sailed majestically out from dry dock, and down the sliding brown river. Like the white king-moth leaving the chrysalis, and raising its great wings to the drying sun, with no thought of danger, no thought of the tragedy which her great beautiful sails were to make, she had gone.

III Mother O'Brien had pleaded with her sons, begging them to stay at horne, to work the land or to own some little business but the call of the sea-they would follow father.

"Perhaps we may find him," Jack had said. "We'll not be lost Mother. We'll come home to you; in a few years, but let us go now."

They only knew of their father, that he had been nearly saved, but perhaps lost at sea, many years ago. They knew that the "Nancy" a beautiful new frigate had been first becalmed before the gale which rose to 'tear at her sails, to wrench at the masts and toss her playfully about like a bounding cork. The squalls circled and whirled round and round the ship in fury, raising a sea of long breaking waves in which the "Nancy" plunged and dipped heavily, holding her breath each time before corning up again. The whole frame strained, creaked, groaned and slowly became water logged. The sky darkened, became inky while blue lightning spit and cracked around the sailors who strained, as they fought the elements, to lower life boats or to put on safety belts. I could imagine the prolonged roll to the windward side and hear the rush of waters as they fall from one side to the other, deep within the bowels of the ship. I seemed in some dim way to remember how the crew strove valiently to lighten the ship by throwing over board all cargo and ammunition, great packing boxes of merchandise, barrels of gun powder, and through it all the steady, set-lipped calm of the crew.

- It had been of no avail, the heavy wind pushed her to windward, and this time she could not rise again. Boats were useless on the lee-ward side but the crew was seen to enter boats on the side now settling into the water. Terrance O'Brien had been seen among them by the mate who told the story.

The waves took the little boats of sweating, rowing men, out toward the open sea, then sent them toward land. The men had rowed all that day with only dry biscuits and water.

The sea bubbled higher about the prow, and muttered loudly. Beaten here and thereby the billows, unable to hold a

THE PHOENIX course or to gain headway the men were forced to give up. All night they lay flat in the bottom of the skiff, became soaked by the icy flying spray, expecting death at the next plunge or on some raging bar of breakers. They became weary, numb, some lay as in a stupor, some slept fitfully. 路When they awake or roused themselves in the morning 1 they saw, about a mile to the west, grey, melancholy woods and hills that ran upwards in naked spires of rock.

They could see and hear the surf pounding and thundering, foaming on the steep beach, but were as close as they dared to go before the sun came up to show them all of the projecting rocks. It was quiet enough now to drop anchor, so, over the end it splashed, frightening gulls who flew up, wheeled, and dipped, then settled again. A smell of sodden leaves, rotted tree trunk, and stagnant water came to them and to this they steered.

It was twelve hours before they were picked up 路by the "Betsy Arden" and taken from the island, that is, all those who landed except Terrance O'Brien. No one knew if he had fallen overboard or had gone back into the island to explore the rocks.

For many years they searched for him but found nothing except father's old blue shirt and his woolen stockings which Mother knitted and sent in his Christmas box. They were wrapped in tarpaulin and we could still read the tag in the shirt. The red anchor on the sleeve was faded and "run" now, all of it water stained, usele.ss, but the Mother still kept them in a studded iron sea-chest.

IV Now Mother O'Brien had called for me again. It couldn't be that William-as I reached the house at the end of the path I saw that all was quiet-and dark, subtly ominous.

It was a strange house, one that faced the sea, a house built to look like a ship. Out on the bridge every night Mother O'Brien lit the ship's lantern, which was to guide her younger son and husband home, when they should come sailing by.

But all was dark.

Ah! There was the flickering taper, winding up the companion-way stairs, to light the lantern. I knew that it was

THE PHOENIX carried by tired hands. The lantern caught and died with a gasp. Again the taper caressed the wick and this time burped up brightly blue, a steady, sullen, flame. Then down the turning stairs, held high to dispel the gloom, came the taper.

Mother O'Brien's tall figure was exaggerated in the cheerless white hallway, her features were made sharp in the wavering light.

"They're bringing him home to me this night, Patricia.

I'm going to nurse him, mend his tired, sick body. He'll liveand then stay home with his old mother. He will live Patricia."

We sat down, Mother and I, in the Captain's cabin to wait.

I looked at the odd room and wondered. I wondered about the man who so loved the sea, about the sea which had such a strong pull on the men of this family.

In the center of the floor was inlaid the compass of eight directions. The beds were two bunks, built in, one above the other, with brass lanterns at the head of each. A globe of the world turned on its axis, over a studded sea-chest, a chest which had been on many long voyages and returned, safely. It was this chest that brought back the blue chintz which covered the couch, India Chintz from the Salem Sea. At the dock! We heard the grind and bump of the boat, feathering of oars, the slip of chain over post. Then a long quiet before the men come creaking up the dock. Their slow tread reminds me of another time. Something pulled me to the window. I could see the pile of white stones out there on the hillside. Would it be so another time? God would not ask the Mother to give up her last son?

How slowly they walk-as ifThey put him down on the couch. William raised his eyes to his Mother, smiled bravely and then fell into a dream. For hours he lay, never moving.

Just before dawn, even as I sat wondering, I saw the life color fade from his face, leaving the skin ashen, pale. The first shadow of pain, fleeting, made its light touch upon his face. His breast sank in long outbreathings and after minutes did not rise again. Silence, awe stricken, the unanswering muteness of death, filled the house.

Mother O'Brien stared unbelieving, not able to accept this last cruel blow of the sea. Nor was it easy to credit my own eyes, to believe fate to be so harsh, so pitiless a master. But there lay the broken shell, the husk of him. Hours it lay there in the other room, still, rigid, silent; to prove to us that he was gone, to settle it in our minds, to fix it eternally. The sea"pitiless nemisis, fearful redresser of the wrongs done"-but by whom?

In the hanging book case I saw that there were three leather bound' books and one bright blue. On the lower shelf a pink sea-shell. Dumbly I saw but they held no meaning now.

REMINISCING Long, lazy, hot hours of afternoon siesta make it easy to reminiscence-much easier than re-memorizing the chapter roll, etc., which is in the most recent PHoENIX on my desk in front of me. I will be prepared, though, for my next Sorority examination!

Do you know of a usual sight-seeing American tourist, beginning a tour of Europe without any luggage whatever, excepting the clothes she wore? The summer of 1930 before I entered college, a group of girls from Monroe made a most interesting tour of Europe. Remembering the slogan, "See America first," we visited many American cities, Niagara Falls and Canada, on our way up to Boston, the port from which we sailed.

We left the city of "Tea Party" fame on a British ship setting out on the sea-a new thrill for those of us who had never been aboard a liner! The weather cooled considerably. Some astute Englishmen, who were amused by our Southern accent, assured us that it was quite warm, but we had to go to staterooms for warmer clothing.

Everyone's luggage was in place except mine. Frenzied searching by the Stewards revealed none of my belongings, so shortly it was quite obvious that the hotel had accidentally neglected to get my things to the dock. I proceeded to the wireless-room. and radioed to the hotel to send my luggage

THE PHOENIX overland to St. John, Newfoundland, where the ship would remain until they arrived. Quite complacently I wore borrowed clothes until our arrival at St. John-complacently because I had such an excellent excuse to purchase an entire new wardrobe in Paris. Just before the plank was brought, my luggage arrived-much to the relief of my friends who were . far more concerned over my state of affairs than I. This little incident safely over, we continued the journey with only a few more escapades to upset us. On landing in Liverpool, we went directly to London, the city of beautiful castles and parks; then across the Channel to Paris, in the midst of all the mad gaiety of carnival time, celebrating July qth.

Switzerland, of the toy-like cities and breath-taking magni.ficant Alps; Austria, so much, we realized later, like Germany; Germany, with its historical Black Forest, the little village of Oberammergau with every nationality there to witness the never-to-be forgotten Passion Play; Belgium, known the world over for its beautiful laces and its quaint Flemish language; the Netherlands, as picturesque as its Dutch costumes.

Back now to London and Liverpool, we sailed to Boston with intentions of going down to New York before returning home, but after arriving in the States we discovered we were too anxious to get back to the South.

Our trip was equivalent to a year in college-things considered in an educational, social, and cultural way. I hope to enjoy another such journey again soon. When I do, I will write a more detailed account of my experiences.

THE ART OF WALKING It must not be imagined that walking is merely a physical ability with which we are endowed, or the last resort of one who has no other mode of conveyance. Walking is an artan art which is at once suggestive of a man's dignity. If you don't believe me try it for yourself some snappy autumn morning. I suppose the conventional morning would be a spring one-the grand awakening of life-but then one would no doubt flit around with the balminess of the atmosphere. Yes, try your art of walking some autumn morning. Although autumn is supposedly the latent and declining season, to me it is also the beginning of winter when piercing winds and velvet snow alternately reign over the universe-sometimes merging their powers and together supremely reigning.

Perhaps you have been crying with Tennyson,

"Peace; come away; the song of woe Is, after all, an earthly song," and with Edna St. Vincent Millay find "Searching my heart for its true sorrow, This is the thing I find to be: That I am weary of worlds and people .

Sick of the city, wanting the sea."

Dash out of doors, breathe from the very bottom of your lungs, throw your head and shoulders back, and start walking!

Go off with a stride-a purely masculine one. Give yourself up to the reflex of your muscles. Surrender completely to the buoyancy and vitality of the autumn morning. Don't seek sympathy from a friend-go alone. Nature will give you more than sympathy. You are trying to evade yourself-why take someone with you? Freedom is the very beauty of your artfreedom to go where you please, to do, to think, to feel as your impulses lead you. Why break the soft harmony of a morning with incessant chatter when perhaps the birches you think so lovely mean nothing to your companion; Browse among the birches with Frost; feel that you might have been the author of those picturesque lines:

THE PHOENIX "When I see birches bend to left and right Across the lines of straighter darker trees, I like to think some boy's been swinging them.

But swinging doesn't bend them down to stayIce storms do that ....... 路" Don't you feel like climbing among the birches as Frost's farmer boy did-with the same deftness of movement?

"He learned all there was To learn about not launching out too soon And so not carrying the tree away Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise To the top branches, climbing carefully With the same pains you use to fill a cup Up to the brim, and even above the brim.

Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish, Kicking his way through the air to the ground ... " Imagine your sympathetic companion asking you if you thought the United States would intervene in the Manchurian War when you were mentally scrambling through the birches, and ten to one, he would, too. When you're reasoning in this very realistic channel you can't surrender yourself to the thorough intoxication, the absolute drunkenness, which comes from breathing of the pure air, which first cast a feeling of exuberance within you, then one of gradual sluggishness, blending into peace almost incomprehensible.

We are taught that man is a complexity and wonder at his almost supernatural abilities, but when you come upon some long forgotten scene while you are walking, memories will pour in upon you, and you will find the life you have just lived gone-your power to recall it is vanished-you have succumbed to the old and long forgotten.

And still you are walking-you are a man of moods: you are happy and frivolous; sad and dejected, or perhaps you are feeling just right, but surely the most wonderful mood is that one in which man takes to the road-and walks!

COOKING UNDER DISADVANTAGES "Helen let's go down and cook supper. We ought to have full swing now, since it is only 5 :30."

"All right," said Helen. "You start the potatoes and I will be right down."

While peeling the potatoes the kitchen seemed to become overrun with other people who had the same idea. It was lucky for us that I had gotten a pan earlier for by the time that Helen had the carrots ready there was no pan. Louise gave Helen hers for the privilege of cooking her potatoes with ours . . . . . . Potatoes nearly cooked and Helen looking for a frying pan, she finds one that has to be washed, Betty must have fried her eggs in this pan.

Soon the meat is ready and the table set. Maybe you would like to know what an attractive table we can set with only a few essentials. Soup is served in clear glass dessert dishes, mashed potatoes and pork chops are on a dinner plate, yes we do have a few of these, carrots are in the latest vegetable dishes-coffee cups, salads are on saucers since all the salad

THE PHOENIX plates are in use; lucky that Helen and I do not care for dessert or that might have also been served in a coffee cup . . . . . Dinner is over and it is time to wash the dishes. The other girls who finished first have all washed their dishes; making sure not to wash any that they did not use themselves. "Yes, we will use the dish. pan tonight, thanks Betty" (You see we often wash dishes in the sink).

Dishes are done, kitchen is clean ;-that is all until next time.

BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ALUMNAE Social meetings have filled the calendar of the Buffalo Alumnae girls since our last report.

On the 29th of December, the annual Christmas luncheon, a grand get-together for city and out of town members, was held at the home of Hildegard Kayser. We appreciated holding it at her lovely, large house, and crowded both living and dining rooms. Hildegard and Emma Coleman superintended the preparation and serving of a meal which could have been termed a dinner. Due to the festive occasion and spirit, even the preparation, serving, and clean-up committees were cheerful. A brief business session, bridge, and much conversation followed the luncheon.

Monday, February 6th, marked the gathering of 48 college and alumna: members for a Valentine party at the home of "Ev" Bell. The college girls were our guests for the evening. Fortunately there was a vacant apartment adjoining, in which the games were played. Harriet Sealander who directed the entertainment, paired up girls from each group, then led everyone through a series of games, that were very informal. None of us was especially successful in recognizing silhouettes which Louise Coe made of us with the aid of a lantern. 路 We didn't quite know where to place the blame!

Ruth Ward was chairman for the occasion, assisted by Eleanor Schiersing, Alberta Ottenot, Harriet Sealander, Margaret Eltges, . Louise Coe, and "Caddie" Daw who planned and helped with the refreshments.

The attendance at our monthly meetings so far this year has averaged over thirty. We plan to keep, and hope to improve this record.

ZANESVILLE ALPHA SIGMAS On the afternoon of December 29th, seven girls from four different Ohio chapters gathered at the home of Louise Stewart.

Those present were: Ruth Hollinger Cole and Mary Agnes Cole, Delta Delta, Mildred Benson and Alice Riley, Lambda Lambda, Louise Stewart, Upsilon Upsilon, Martha Green of Alpha Alpha active chapter, and Belle Smith, an Alpha Alpha pledge. Bridge was the order of business, but when it carne to conversation, the "dummy" was the only silent player. Since only one alumna is in Zanesville throughout the year, our gatherings occur only during vacations. There have been no fixed programs, for a self-appointed hostess issues the call for a date on which the majority can come. In the future, we hope to include girls living within a radius of thirty miles. Although it is impossible to affect an organization at the present time, we feel that our sorority can furnish us with very pleasant contacts on various occasions.

MU MU ALUMNAE NEWS Sarah Brewster, who graduated from the Normal Conservatory last June, is teaching public school music in Blissfield, Michigan.

Herma Archer and Eleanor Carah are working in private homes-Herma in Ann Arbor, and Eleanor in Flint.

Phyllis Pow'ers is teaching near her home at St. Ignace Michigan. ' Audrey Eckert is in Texas, where she will live for a year with her aunt and uncle.

Margaret Gripton is staying at home this year in Britton.

Emily Schmid is teaching Home Economics in Sebawing.

Ann Reincke is staying at home this year in Jonesville.

Margaret Welch is teaching Home Economics in the Ann Arbor High School, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Kathleen Garrett is teaching in the kindergarten and .first grade in Tekonsha.

Emma Hartung is staying at home in Mt. Clemens.

Katherine Hindelang is teaching near her home in Chelsea.

Through Ruth Bayler Nickel, we learn that Janet Randolph, her husband, and little boy are in South Africa, where they intend to stay for two years, and that Marian Brown Eddy is in California. _It is with deep sorrow that Mu Mu chapter announces the death of Ruth Marwin Sheldrew. Although Ruth had graduated before any of the present active members had been initiated, she kept up a firm connection with the chapter, and we all had come to know and to love her. Prior to her death, which occurred during Christmas week, she was a teacher of physical education in Dearborn, where her husband, Fred Sheldrew, also taught. Besides maintaining her interest in the college chapter, Ruth was a very active member of the Detroit Association. Her death brings sorrow to both groups, but "Peace, let it be! for we loved her, and love her forever; the dead are not dead but alive."

NEWS FROM AN ALUMNAE OF NU NU May I take this opportunity given to me by the Chapter Editor to tell Nu Nu Alumna: a few things which have been happening at Drexel this year-things which I hope will interest all of you ?

In October the Ex-collegia group had the opportunity of hearing about the convention from Miss Richmond and Jean Esther Reid. The explanation concerning the new alumna: organization was enthusiastically received and we are looking forward to a reorganization with Temple alumna: this month.

Last month Dr. Kolbe, the new President of Drexel Institute, inaugurated an annual affair at the college called "Open House." The aim is to present to high school seniors, their families and friends, an opportunity to become acquainted with Drexel and its advantages.

Open House began on Friday afternoon and guests were given an opportunity to see the Schools of Business Administration, Engineering and Home Economics at work. In the Home Economics Department there were model classes in foods and clothing in session, nutrition exhibits, an historic costume display, and a vocational guidance center. The young guests were particularly interested in seeing the preparation and service of meals, the construction of garments and the effect of diets on white rats. In the vocational guidance room there were pictures of graduates at work and many Alpha Sigs were included.

Dinner was served in the Men's Grill under the supervision of Romayne Gregory, an alumna, and basketball games and play afforded entertainment in the evening. The building was open for inspection on Saturday morning. Busses ran between Drexel, the Home Economics Laboratory and the Drexel Dormitory for the convenience of visitors.

There were about fifteen hundred guests and among them were Nu Nu alumna:. Betty Darlington Armstrong brought in a group of her students from the Merchantville High School and Sally Baxter sent in a large number of girls from Radnor

High School. Ruth Hasenfuss Hollingsworth and her small son visited us on Saturday morning.

A new scheme is being tried out relative to student assemblies. No doubt, you will recall that students never did like compulsory assemblies, and that still holds true. Our present plan is to have an interesting program once a month to which all students are invited. At this point one of the most important observations is the fact that few women attend the meetings while the men show considerable interest. Perhaps we s-hall be required to swing back to the original plan.

It has been an interesting experience to know Drexel as a member of the student body for four years and then as a member of the administrative staff for three years. Whenever alumna: from other chapters are in Philadelphia do not hesitate to call at Drexel Institute. I shall be delighted to show you our college and to be of any assistance to you while you are in the city.

TOLEDO ALUMNAE CHAPTER It was through Mrs. Grace Fultz Haworth's efforts that we met during the holidays for the first time. She entertained us with a delightful bridge party after which we planned our next meeting.

From Buffalo, N.Y., comes the news that on November 21, Thelma Bratt presented the Book Chat of the Grosvenor Library over station WBEN. The broadcast consisted of a fifteen minute review of Archibald Henderson's "Bernard Shaw: Playboy and Prophet."

To date our chapter has met only in a social and friendly way, with no definite aim outlined other than maintaining old friendships, making new friends of recent graduates, professionally aiding each other, and keeping our chapter interested .and growing. We did complete one rather definite project-the collecting of twenty-five dollars to present as a gift to Kappa Kappa Active college chapter to apply to the new sorority home.

INDIANAPOLIS ALUMNAE CHAPTER Since the date set for our January meeting and the benefit bridge given by the pledges fell on the same day, we compromised. We alumn~ postponed our meeting and attended the bridge.

Mrs. 0. K. Gaskins called a special meeting of her committee to make plans for the original Valentine Party which the alumn~ gave February fourth for the Mothers' Club and the Active chapter. An account of the party was written by Letha Heckmen Gaskins.

THE KEYNOTE OF LIFE The world calls today for men and women of high ideals, noble character, and right principles. The world needs men and women who are willing to give their time and their talent to the service of God and their fellowmen.

Service to others must be the keynote of every life that would not be a mere nothing wasted away in the idle selfish pursuit of pleasure. The greater the influence of a man or woman who serves, the greater the extent of that service. And so when we reach that point where our life and lifework influences the lives of others and helps them to see things in the true light the word takes on an inestimable value.

CHI CHI VALENTINE PARTY The alumnce members of Chi Chi entertained the Mothers' Club and College members with a buffet supper and Valentine party Saturday evening, February fourth, at the home of Mrs. William Dow and Margaret Dow, 5762 Washington Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana. Those in charge of planning the menu, arrangements, and program were: Letha Gaskins, chairman; Evelyn Hall, Margaret Schoffield, and Geraldine Hutton.

After the thirty-four guests had arrived each was presented with a hearty welcome and a program for the evening. These were small, red hearts with the welcome on one side reading: "A Hearty Welcome to Everyone Light-Hearted Laughter and Whole-Hearted Fun." On the reverse side under "Hearts for Tonight" appeared: 1 · Mated Hearts 2. Hungry Hearts 3· Sweet Hearts 4· Honeyed Hearts 5· Countless Hearts 6. Complimentary Hearts 7· Valentine Hearts 8. Lonely Hearts Letha announced that there was a Valentine for each auest at Cupid's Post Office, a table nearby. Each Valentine had a name on the outside while the inside contained a request to find a mate, such as, "You're the one for whom I seek; Let me be with you on Kiss Creek."

Whereupon each person found her place at one of .the card tables by locating a large red cupid holding heart signs reading, "Kiss Creek, Lovers' Lme, -Sweetheart Street, Valentine Valley, Cupid's Crossing," etc. Tables were laid with white covers and Valentine paper napkins. :Favors were milk chocolate hearts tied to red paper hearts with red ribbons and bearing gilt cupid's darts.

After each one had discovered her mate who had a corresponding verse, the "Hungry Hearts" were fed with: Chicken a la King in Heart-shaped timbales Stuffed Olives Escalloped Potatoes with Pimento Bleeding Heart Beets . Cupid's Dart Salad with Mayonnaise Lovers' Biscuits Cherry Preserves Strawberry Ice Cream Heart-shaped Cookies The spirit of St. Valentine prevailed in the dining room with a wide assortment of hearts decorating the windows, walls, and light fixtures. Red tape~s in silver holders lighted the table which had a center piece made of a large red heart candy box lid holding a bowl of red sweet peas and surmounted by a red cupid. .

There were many complimentary remarks upon the culinary successes of 路the 'various alumn:::e cooks who prepared the food. Preceding the dessert course Jerry Hutton sang "Sweethearts Forever" and "Alpha Sigs Forever" to the same music while Kathryn Faust accompanied her on the 路 piano. Then Helen Selvage played and Eloise Proctor led everybody in singing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." Afterwards Letha read the stor-y and 路significance of St. Valentine. When the dessert appeared everyone was fascinated with the clever Valentine cookies decorated with 路sentimental words which Margaret Schoffield had made.

For our first game "Sweethearts" a large heart box was passed around containing little envelope packages sealed with gold hearts: Upon opening them we found a blank Western Union Telegram sheet'with fourteen candy heart mottoes. We

THE PHOENIX were then told to compose love messages to our "Sweethearts" using only the words found on the candy hearts. In a few minutes each one read her own love message amid shrieks of laughter.

Next, "Honeyed Hearts" were pinned upon the backs of everybody present. These were white paper hearts on which appeared some endearing term as "Tootsie Wootsie," "Petsy Wetsy," "Ducky Darling," etc. Then we moved around reading each other's names and making a mental note of them, and at the same time counting the "Countless Hearts" among the decorations. "Honeyed Hearts" brought the heartiest laughs of the evening. Four hectic minutes were allowed for counting, then the names were removed, and pencils and paper were passed for everyone to set down the pet names and number of hearts. Adelaide McCarty admitted that her correct number was purely a guess. Jane McDavitt remembered seventeen names, perhaps they were favorites for her husbandwho knows?

"Complimentary Hearts" followed. These were red paper hearts each bearing some letter of the alphabet. They were held up by one as "flash cards" and the first person to call out a complimentary adjective beginning with this letter was awarded the heart. Eloise Proctor won the most.

Another paper and pencil game proved very amusing"Valentine Hearts." First we wrote our own name, then the name of the person to our left, next we drew her picture. Most of the "portraits" were just too comical to describe and unless the names had been written beforehand, they never would have been recognized or even claimed.

Last carne "Lonely Hearts." We were told "Why be lonely?

There is a Jack for every Jill. Step up and choose your mate."

Pictures of movie shieks, comedians, athletes, politicians, and venerable old men with Rip Van Winkle beards were cut from magazines and pasted on red hearts. These were strung on a wire across the room, and each guest was blindfolded and given a cupid's dart to point out her mate. Some were well pleased with their choice, while others were not-such is life!

By this time real sweetheart dates began arriving so the

program ended, each one heartily agreeing that it had been an evening of light-hearted laughter and whole-hearted fun.

DELTA DELTA ALUMNA HONORED Miss Helen McClaflin, B.M., 1926; B.S. in Ed., 1930, Ohio University, is an assistant professor of Music at Kent State College. Last summer Miss McClaflin did graduate work in the School of Music at the University of Michigan. This winter she received an invitation from the director of the Michigan school to sing as contralto soloist in a presentation of Handel's "The Messiah" in Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor, December rrth. The other soloists were Laura Littlefield, soprano; Arthur Hackett, tenor; King Kellogg, bass. The soloists were supported by a 350-voice chorus and the university symphony orchestra.

OUR ALUMNAE The alumn::E edition of THE PHoENIX is a welcome time for us to tell you about our alumn<E chapter. We actives know that our most enjoyable meetings are the ones at which our alumn<E girls are present. Several times a year we are entertained by and entertain the alumn<E. With the Epsilon Epsilon alumna chapter so active here, we feel that when we leave college it will not mean that our sorority contacts will be broken. Our alumn<E are full of the Alpha Sig spirit, and we feel that although they are not in school with us, that they are still interested in both school and sorority affairs. The real test of a sorority chapter is its value to the life of the college and the community as expressed by our chapter aim. As actives looking ahead to the days of membership in the alumn<E chapter, we feel that our alumn<E girls fully represent the aim of Alpha Sigma Alpha in the four-fold development of its members.

PARTIES FOR OUR ALUMNAE The Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha has done a great deal in the last few months in having their girls become better acquainted with the alumnce.

During the week-end of Homecoming, we had a covered dish supper for them. It was just an informal party with the town and out-of-town alumnce as guests. It was especially beneficial because it gave the new pledges a better chance to know the alumnce.

Then a few days before Christmas vacation we entertained the alumnce at our annual Christmas exchange, and in return we were presented with a lovely floor lamp for the house from them. One of the girls at the house acted as Santa Clause.

(And did she ever make a good Santa?) She passed out the presents which we had exchanged with each other. Refreshments of hot chocolate and sandwiches were served by the pledges.

All in all we have had a grand time with the alumnce this year.

ACTIVITIES OF EPSILON EPSILON ALUMNAE Since the "Alpha Sigs" at l(ansas State Teachers' College, Emporia, is known as the town girls' sorority, our alumna: chapter is quite large and always interested in the active chapter. Several of our alumnce have younger sisters who are now active.

We meet once a month for a business meeting followed by bridge. Our activities are varied. At Christmas and Thanksgiving we filled baskets for a family who needed help badly.

During the fall rush weeks festivities the alumn:e chapter gives a tea for rushees. This keeps the alumnce in closer touch with the active chapter and makes for a feeling of unity-of the sorority as a larger group than those thirty-two girls who make up the active chapter.

On Founders' Day the actives entertained us with a lovely buffet supper. We almost felt young again as we learned the new dance step-to "jitter."

At Christmas time the actives again entertained us. We had a large Christmas tree and Santa Claus visited us distributing candy to those of us who had been "good."

Although this is my first year as an alumna, I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and feel that Alpha Sigma Alpha is even dearer to me.

EPSILON EPSILON-EMPORIA ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION Professional Notes From the weird beating of the tom-tom; to the poetic dance of the ancient Greek; then to the luring song of a troubadour and his juggler serenading a beautiful lady; thence to the sincere devotion of the early church; then to the expression of grace and dignity of the court with all its sparkle, charm, and affection; eriding in the present day, modern tones of the "Rhapsody in Blue"-that is a short story of the dance cycle given by the Rhythmic. Circle, December 14th under the direction of Miss Edna McCullough, head of the Women's Physical Education Department of the Kansas State Teachers College.

Miss McCullough has entitled the dance cycle "A Visual Representation of Rhythm-Primitive, Ancient, Modern. This recital was given as part of her work for her master thesis.

The primitive period was interpreted by a group of seven men. They danced to the monotonous beating of the tom-toms as did the men of those times, expressing their emotions by beating on the ground, stamping, and wailing; and praising their gods by clapping their hands and swaying their bodies to and fro. Dim lighting and dark background gave the gloomy effect of the period.

Three members of the Speech Department read a translation of "Bacchanalia" from Euripides as an accompaniment for

the Greek dancers. These dancers had as a background the sea and the woods. Their costumes were Ionic tunics in various shades of mahogany, burnt orange, yellow and red.

The conflict between sacred and secular music which came with the rise of the early church resulted in a growth of two melodic types-rhythmic and ecclesiastical. For the first type, a troubadour, followed by his juggler serenades a lovely lady.

The second type was represented by a procession of priests and a moving frieze. Priest-like robes, amber light, and a church window in the background gave the desired atmosphere for this dance. As an accompaniment the Madrigalians sang "Kyrie Eilison," a Gregarian chant.

The folk dance, tune and rhythm of four countries-Germany, France, England, Spain-was interpreted by the dancers.

Handel's "Suite .No. XVI was the accompaniment played by the K. S. T. C. orchestra.

An interpretation of Hayden's "Surprise Symphony" showed the gayety and affectation of the court. These costumes were rainbow colors beginning with tinted blue, through green, yellow, orange, red, and shading into blue-violet.

To represent the transition between the music of the eighteenth century and that of the twentieth, the orchestra played "March from the Nutcracker Suite" by Tschaikowsky.

Eighteen girls interpreted the modern dance attempting to show the intricate rhythms and clashing chords of present day music. "Rhapsody in Blue," by Gershwin. This was done with blue costumes, blue lightning, and in front of a blue curtain.

It should be remembered that this cycle was developed along the line of the history of rhythm and music rather than the history of the dance. It begins with the beating of the tom-toms and develops finally into the intricate rhythm of twentieth century music.

Miss McCullough is a member of Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha and is chapter adviser for the active chapter at the Kansas State Teachers College.

Emporia Alumnae Chapter This organization has been in existence a goodly number of years but from all appearances they do not believe that "It pays to advertise." Since I have not received a news letter from them and because I am an Epsilon Epsilon alumna, I feel I have the right to chide them for neglecting their PHoENIX correspondence. At the same time I set down a few items for them-my sisters. 路 This group is continuing their custom of meeting once a month on the third Wednesday evening. Social and business meetings are followed by bridge.

For many years the alumna: have held their December meeting together with the Mother organization at the sorority house as a Christmas party. At this time gifts are presented to the "House." The gifts have been a radio, lamps, a mirror, pillows, dishes, a silver tea service, tablecloths and other useful and lovely articles.

The February meeting will be a covered dish supper to which husbands and sweethearts (if any) will be invited.

Elizabeth B. Smith has deserted the big city of New York and now has a teaching position at Cortland, N. Y. Miss Lora M. Lock has a year's leave of absence and is studying at New York University. She teaches in Dallas, Texa~.

Thoughts at 65 My Sixty-fifth birthday passed yesterday.

Today I seem to be well planted in my middle sixties. I have definitely left the early sixties and in a few months will be well into the border land of the late sixties. I used to be afraid of the sixties. Indeed I was afraid of the fifties. On my fiftieth birthday, coming down to the party Mrs. White gave for me, I was so overcome by fear of impending senility that I sat on the stairsteps and wept. But I am not afraid now.

THE PHOENIX ..... I have been shaving this funny old face every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for years and years. I have come to look on it as a mask behind which the reality that is I, has to hide. It is getting a bit battered and shopworn. Perhaps it would not be such a bad idea to cast it off and let dust return and if there is any salvage "with God be the rest."

In the meantime life has been good, a tremendously interesting adventure. I have never had a bored hour in my life.

I get up every morning now, wondering what new, strange, gorgeous thing is going to happen and it always happens at fairly reasonable intervals. And generally, adventure comes from afar, from the outside, from things over which I have no control. Lady Luck has been good to me. I fancy she is good to everyone only some people are dour and when she gives them the come hither with her eyes they look down or turn away and lift an eyebrow. But me, I give her the wink and away we go . . . . . . I challenge fate to do her worst, for I have beaten her at her own game. I have come through three score years and five and-being naturally lucky-have taken more than my share of tricks. Fate can't take them from me.

When the boy's mother served the plates, Jimmie looked at his plate, looked at the woman and exclaimed, "Don't you know you shouldn't serve the salad on the same plate with everything else?"

XI XI ALUMNAE NEWS Los Angeles, California 路 Greetings once again from Xi Xi Alumna:!

A meeting was held, December 7th, at the home of Ruth Morstead. It was our Christmas . meeting and Ruth's home, gaily decorated, gave us that Christmasy feeling the minute we entered it. The mantel was converted into a regular old-fashioned fireplace, covered with holly and greenery, with filled stockings n'everything. After the business meeting, bridge was 路 played for awhile but not for long, in a short time, everyone was talking so hard and fast, cards were forgotten, so the rest of the afternoon was spent just "visiting." Delicious refreshments were served and on each plate was a big bag of Christmas candy, wrapped in silvery cellophane and tied with red ribbon. Assistant hostesses with Ruth, were Fern White and Rubye Bellmard Schaefer.

The Alumna: Association planned and gave a benefit Bridge party to raise money for the active Chapter. This was held at the beautiful spacious home of Orrell Hester, our vice-president, in Glendale. It was a grand success, thanks to Orrell who did all the hard work, and also to all the grand friends, parents, husbands and boy-friends who attended. We cleared over $25.00. Everyone of us was particularly happy to see Betty Fellows, who came with her mother, Mrs. Fellows, one of our patronesses. Betty was home for her Christmas vacation from Berkeley where she is taking post-graduate work.

Our last meeting on Saturday, February 18th, was held at the home of Ethel Tobin. Assistant hostesses were, Eugenia Welsher, and Emily Wetmore. Members present were: Mary

Davis, Ruth Morstead, Ermine Berger, Mildred Rich, Fern White, Nell Grant, Vesta Carle, Mary Lou Kimner, Orrell Hester, Mary Catherine Arnold, Rubye Schaefer, and Gertrude Burkitt, active chapter representative. It was decided to present some sort of entertainment at each meeting, and this plan was decided on. The girls drew slips of paper on which were written the names of the months. Then which ever month you drew, you have to entertain on the meeting taking place that month. Good idea? So we shall be entertained for at least a year from June as we had so many girls the slips were written up to June, I934路 The hostesses, Ethel, Jeannie, and Emily did themselves proud on their lovely decorations and refreshments. After the business meeting, we worked jigsaw puzzles (yes we are all going goofy out here too), four girls to a puzzle, and the ones who had the most done during the allotted time was given a darling red heart-shaped box of candy, being's as how it was our Valentine party. The refreshments of salad and sandwiches, all carried out in heart shapes, besides being good to look at were certainly good to eat.

Ah! I have some news to tell you, we have had an addition in our A. S. A. family-a son, Ronald Frederick, born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Henrichs (our own Lillian Criswell).

We're all thrilled and wish to offer our sincere congratulations to Lillian and Fred.

ALUMNAE NEWS NOTES OF OMEGA OMEGA The alumna: of the Omega Omega chapter are scattered about in our own city, in the towns about us, in different states, and one has even left the United States for a time.

Five of our girls are te~ching. Helen Stevens and Lucille Zweck are in two of our city schools. Ann Powell teaches at Chula Vista, Lorenne Laubmeyer at Oceanside, and Betty Elliott is principal of the Lemon Grove School.

partment at the training school, and, in addition, is teaching college students how to teach writing.

Marian Hammond is secretary to the head of the psychology department at State College and is planning to teach an extension course to be offered at night school at the high school.

Marian Tweedy is going to school in Washington.

Virginia Driscoll, who went to Denver almost a year ago to work, is now able to go to the University of Colorado. We're all saving up our ailments, so that when Virginia receives her M.D., we'll be able to have a real doctor take care of us.

The last we heard of our president, Corinne Heller, she was in Washington, D路 C. From all she writes us, we know she's enjoying herself in the East.

Mirla LaPlant is doing bookkeeping in Vista where she has been the last two years. She made us a visit a few months ago, and we were all so happy to see her again. lone Wright has been doing some interesting work the last half year. She has been making blood tests in the laboratory at Mercy Hospital. Right now she is watching for a position to make good use of her experience.

Our three housewives, Margaret Basinger, Doris Cota, and Geraldine Cunningham are busy with countless domestic duties plus other individual pursuits from which they derive their pleasures.

Our most recent bride, Fleta Jones Gerwig, writes us the most interesting letters from Samoa where she has been living since her marriage in the fall. She had to send all her pretty silk dresses back to the United States, for it is so damp there that everything molds. She forgot to send her winter coat by that first boat coming back, so for a whole month, until the next boat, she had to keep her coat in a closet with an electric light on so it wouldn't mold. She says it rains and rains and rains down there.

Our girls may be scattered, but we hear from them all, and we don't forget them. Wouldn't it be great if, some day, all of us who have ever been in the Omega Omega chapter could be together again ?

Another member of Tau Tau chapter has returned to the fold. It's great to be back and to find such an active group of girls carrying on for Alpha Sigma Alpha. For the last three years I have been helping to publish a farm magazine put out by the Capper Publications in Topeka, Kansas. The Home Department of the magazine is an interesting field of editorial work and I enjoyed it immensely. It covers all problems of the home-cooking, sewing, gardening and personal beauty helpswith the latest hints and suggestions. However, I am glad to be back in Hays again and shall try to finish my college work.

Dorothy Morrison, TT. The Mother-Patroness Club of the Chi Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha met at the home of Mrs. E. C. Faust, January 4, 1933, for a luncheon meeting. The center piece of the table was blue and pink chrysanthemums. After a most enjoyable time at luncheon, the business meeting was called to order by ~the president, Mq. Joseph Selvage. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and accepted. There were ten members present. Letters from out of town members were read by the corresponding secretary, Mrs. G. W. Hutton. Mrs. Schofield announced that a basket of groceries and some toys were taken to a needy family. Announcement was made of a Benefit Bridge which was to be given by the Active Chapter on January 7路 The corresponding secretary was asked to write to the mothers of the pledges, inviting them to become members of our club. The meeting was adjourned.

The Mother-Patroness Club of Chi Chi chapter met February 1, 1933, at the home of Mrs. Jane Foltz McDavitt with Mrs. F. B. Foltz hostess. We had a most delightful luncheon.

The place-cards at the table were made with a picture of each of our daughters in the center of a red heart. We enjoyed these so much. A lovely bouquet of white sweet peas made a most attractive center piece for the table.

There were eleven members and one visitor, Mrs. Harry Shaw the mother of a pledge to the Active chapter, present. The corresponding secretary reported having sent eighteen letters to out of town members. Mrs. Dow read a letter from Mrs. Bertha L. Walker, District Supervisor of the Family Welfare Society, thanking the Mothers' Club for their help of the needy family.

It was. decided that in place of giving a party for the Active chapter at this time we would prepare the food for a spread for one of the rush parties.

Mrs. Faust, Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Hutton to serve at the spread.

Plans for Initiation which is to be February 18, were discussed. Mrs. Selvage and Mrs. Clyde Hall are to make all arrangements: An invitation was extended to the mothers to attend a Valentine Spread to be given by the Alumna Association at the home of Margaret Dow, Saturday evening, February 4路 Mrs. Gerald W. Dear Alumnae: I don't know what happened that we didn't get in on this news business sooner. We're not keeping any secrets and we don't want to be left out, so I'm giving you news that dates way back to last September. I'm hoping news that old will still be read.

In September of each year we have our first meeting and at that time make up our program for the year. This year we made our plans at Peggy Langham's home. At each of our meetings business is combined with an all around good time.

We have an especially congenial group of girls-twentyeight in all. We have not been able to get all twenty-eight together at one meeting but we're getting better and better.

Here is a glimpse of our meetings so far this year: October-"Hey, hey, Hard Times Party" at Vivi Dobbin's home; Irene Gregg Hallard and Za Lawrenson were assisting hostesses.

Such costumes! Gunny sacks, newspaper dresses, gay ninety frocks, and most anything else were to be seen.

It was decided that night to lend a helping hand to Beta Beta chapter instead of carrying on our usual social service work.

November-Founders' Day Banquet at the Denver Dry Goods Company Tearoom. Arrangements were in charge of Polly Smelser Schlosser, Peggy Phelps Langhorn, and Irene Gregg Hallard. It was a lovely party and attended by over fifty persons. Convention reports were given by some of the girls who were lucky enough to attend. The poor unfortunates listened with growing enthusiasm for the next convention.

We were all delighted to learn of the discovery of our founders.

Scene: The charming west windows of Maurine McMullin's home. On the outside looking in (being a late arrival) Alpha Sigs chatting and generally enjoying themselves. On the inside looking out-a magnificent and uninterrupted view of the mountain range from .Long's Peak to Pike's Peak.

Our March meeting is to be a travelog pot luck supper at the home of Gladys Lamb. Glophy Brown will assist her.

In April we will have our annual nite club. Peggy Langhorn's home will be transformed into a night club. Her assisting hostesses will be Ruth Woods, Helen Harvat, Marian Smith, and Esther Wheaton.

Our May party has not been definitely decided upon but it will probably be either an outdoor steak fry or breakfast. Mildred Nulton Puffer will have charge of arrangements.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to our president, Irene Holland, in the recent loss of her mother.

ALPHA ALPHA CHAPTER NEWS The Alpha Alpha chapter regrets to announce that a pledge, Mary Robertson, Midland Park, N. J., did not return at semester on account of the death of her father. We extend the deepest sympathy to Mary.

Miriam Van Rensaelaer, the girl who drew "A Stay-at-Home's Idea of Convention" for the November PHOENIX is confined to the Mount Royal Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Her address is Mount Royal Sanatorium, North Royalton, Ohio, in care of Brecksville post office, if any of the girls would care to write. Miriam was president of Delta Phi Delta and very active in all school affairs. I'm sure that she would appreciate letters to help her spend her hours until she can be back with us again.

The Alpha Alpha chapter is proud to have the following members on the University Honor Roll for last semester: Nancy Simpkinson, Frances Heuer, Marguerite Tohle, June Harpster, Ruth Nestey, Anna Randolph, Lucille Pipher, Eloise Brown, Evelyn Fetter, Miriam Snyder, and Frances Talbot.

The Alpha Alpha chapter began the new semester with some rush parties where we had a lot of fun. As we usually do, we made Falker's our headquarters for morning and afternoon rushing. On February 4, Scott Manor was the scene of a "doggie bridge" party. It was really almost the usual kind of bridge party, but the tallies were all different sorts of dogs. The next night we all went to the basketball game together and went up town afterwards. Mid-term rushing is never so extensive as it is at the first of the year, and we always have quite a definite idea of the girls we wish to rush.

We were proud to welcome Ruth Carter from Cambridge, Ohio to our fine group of pledges. Ruth is a darling girl and we have wanted her for an Alpha Sig for some time. To celebrate her pledging we had a theatre party for "A Farewell to Arms." We about wept ourselves to death, but nevertheless we had a marvelous time-we always do.

The outstanding event of the month was the banquet at which the pledges entertained the actives. The date was February 9; the place, the Miami Wigwam; and the atmosphere was perfect. For some time there had been a feeling of suspense in the air; so we were all thrilled when we received the little red and white invitations written in curiously square handwriting. We were still more surprised when the taxi's delivered us at the Wigwam, for the decorations were very unique. Every-

THE PHOENIX thing was red and white-especially appropriate for three ~easons-for Valentine's Day and because they are the colors of Alpha S1gma Alpha and Miami U. The programs were red heart booklets enclosing white pages printed in red. The pledges presented us with lovely crested bracelets for favors, each silver link having the silhouette of a dancing figure enameled on it. We were entertained by speeches from our president and pledge president, Frances Heuer and Lois Wilson. After each pledge had sung her original song, they all gave us a clever little play called "Common Clay."

Now we are looking forward to the Junior Prom, but we will have to wait until next time to tell you about that.

Refreshments were served late in the evening, and after singing a few sorority songs, everyone went uptown as a regular finish to the evening.

The pledges entertained the active members at the sorority house, Tuesday night, February I 1. The program consisted of a humorous play, several musical numbers, and some impersonations at the expense of the actives. After the program, refreshments of wafers and hot chocolate were served.

Alpha Beta's basketball team has played two games in the tournament held by K. S. T . C. The first tilt it won from the Tri Sigs by a score of 20 to 16; the second was lost to the Delta Sigs, 26 to 20.

THE PHOENIX month has been Freshman rushing. Rushing season lasts only three weeks, but we started to prepare for it long before the time arrived.

Now it is over, and the results are well worth the labor.

Your "news reeler" has prevailed on some of the girls to speak to you personally, and now I wish to present Marion Cox who will tell you about our first rush party.

Alpha Sigs First Nighter Hear ye! Hear ye! The beginning of Alpha Sigs First Nighter (Rush Season). Around the corners of the halls in John Sutton Dormitory appear members of Alpha Gamma with freshies who look eager but just a wee bit frightened.

"Mary Cribbs, do you know where Mrs. Stevenson lives? (The first rush party was being held in the home of one of our patronesses.)

Bernie an.d I were there once, but I can't remember."

"Yes, about a block from ex-Governor Fisher's home. I'll take a group of the girls."

About one-half hour later the girls arrived at their destination.

"Good evening, Mrs. Stevenson."

"Good evening girls. I am so glad to see you. Just take your. wraps upstairs and then one of the girls will take care of you."

The girls are conducted to the amateur theatre which is located on the .third floor. Everyone is smiling and seems to be in the happiest frame of mind.

At eight o'clock, Margee Moore, Mistress of Ceremonies, appears on the stage. She is about to speak.

"Girls, we have been terribly disappointed. We had hoped to present to you comedy, but instead, we have had a terrible tragedy. We now present "The Eskimo Tragedy."

A pantomime was presented. The following girls took part: Reader-Phil Wright.

Eskimurderer-Mid Julius.

Eskipup--Bernie Anstead.

The Eskimurderer, who killed the Eskimaid and Eskiman, was eaten by the Eskipup. He died from an overloaded stomach.

Margie Moore again appears.

"We next present our A. S. A. Ukulele Lady who has appeared before worldwide organizations, such as, the Y. W. C. A. of the Indiana State Teachers College-Grace Gonlock."

Following Grace's number the girls were taken downstairs where they played "cootie." This was enjoyed by everyone. Later in the evening we were entertained by readings which were given by Mrs. McClure, a friend of one of our patronesses.

THE PHOENIX After we were served with a delightful lunch which was prepared by our Home Economic girls we took our freshies back to the Dorm.

Of course you want to hear about the last rush party, too and Dora Good is going to give you her impression of it.

The second rush party, a formal dinner dance, was held Saturday night at the Indiana Country Club. Those present included nineteen members, sixteen rushees, three alumni, two sponsors, and two pledges.

We were taken to the club in buses and upon our arrival there we removed our wraps and went down to the dining room . The table was decorated with astronomical figures in black and silver, including the ASA stars. After the dinner the girls danced to music played by the school orchestra. The dance programs for each girl had been carefully made out in advance so that every girl rushee might have the best opportunity to become better acquainted with the members. There were eleven dances in all, the last being a tag dance. At ten forty-five the buses arrived and we were taken back ~o school. By the results it must have been a most successful party. Fifteen girls have accepted the invitation to become members of Alpha Gamma chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Ruth Edwards, one of the Home Ec. mainstays in the sorority, will speak to you next.

"Greetings, and other forms of salutations!" I have just come from my hiberniculum.

To prove to you that I have not spent all of the last eighteen weeks in sleeping, I think I'll tell you exactly what I have done. I commenced the first half of my stay in this habitation by dusting, cleaning windows, mopping and scrubbing floors, washing, ironing, cleaning porches, sending in repair reports, scouring bowls and tubs, washing down walls, chasing spiders and bringing down cobwebs with a clothcovered broom, exercising the other eight animals by chasing them across the football field one-half minute before every class, and bawling them out for tracking mud on the clean porch and rugs, holding truth parties, "apple shining," and conducting nursery school.

The second half of my lethorgic stage was spent in menu making, cooking, bossing, being bossed, concocting appetizers, ushering people in and out, answering bells, waiting on tables, scouring pans, mopping the kitchen floor, washing and drying dishes, bluffing through classes, writing cook's reports, keeping accounts, marketing, more exercise on the gridi ron, nursery school reports, writing invitations, learning how to feed sick animals and keep them well, and last but not least, havi ng meals on time while taking exams and making field trips.

The initial day of my break of confinement I heard a bark and one of these busy-body animals wanted to know where I had been and had the nerve to ask if those residing in the home management house used secret underground tunnels to get to classes, of course I allowed him to think it!

BETA BETA CHAPTER NEWS Phoenix-like, Beta Beta has renewed itself in meaning as well as size. Setting out to maintain our house through our own dining-room and management for the first time in years, we wondered what success we should have. We glowed over transforming a dismal house into an Alpha Sig home with "atmosphere," and bought new furniture with money each of us gave at a Christmas party, (to which our Alums subscribed generously). One prized piece of our household is the silver cup awarded us at conference.

Our home-building, then, has given us unity, but our group couldn't avoid growth with Miss Elizabeth Luzmoor as faculty advisor and Miss Rose Lamme! as social directress. They are constantly doing such things as giving money awards to the pledge and active making the highest grade average, and it is they who have taken the problems of each girl to heart. Miss Luzmoor has just left to attend Stanford. Mrs. Ellinger, of the Art Department, has assumed her duties.

The hearty group of sixteen whom we pledged after rush season, with its traditional Bubble Formal and Japanese Tea, gave us a clever "Hotel Lobby" dance. The programs were within heavy brown tags

attached to real keys, and the guests registered at the door. The pledges' "original song night" was a wow. Clad in everything from a rubber glove to flaming bath-towels, they presented songs varying in degrees of sense and harmony. They are soon to demonstrate the finer points of introducing Mrs. Smith to Mrs. Jones, when to talk, where to-oh, you know!

Our social events have been many. At an autumn breakfast given us by our Alums, each table was enriched by a golden pumpkin from which flowed fruits of all shades. A tea for our mothers, dinners for faculty members, several jolly house dances, (at one of which our trio volunteered to entertain us, and Marian Behrens-you may remember our Prexy?-put on some false teeth, an old bonnet, and a false wig, with the result that the party nearly took to floor-rolling), have been our other social activities.

And now we anxiously await the first basketball game of our conference for the "gals" of the two practice teams have showed real pep.

In fact, Beta Beta has acquired that ethereal something-beneath-thesurface that makes it a real sorority. Drop in on us anytime!

EPSILON EPSILON CHAPTER NEWS Yes, the Epsilon Epsilon chapter is still thriving, in spite of the fact that our news has not been in the PHoENIX. That is too long a story for here.

At present we are well into the second semester. Those who failed to make their grades are working in the grim realities of the word.

On February II, our new members were initiated. We honored the occasion by giving them a formal banquet afterwards. Activities and alumnae were all astounded with the vocabulary which Mary Newman, one of our new girls, mastered in a toast after the dinner. Here is some of it: "Since I have just finished assimilating an indigestible dutoplasm, which I know you all hope will not generate plutoplasm through that great transition called metabolism, I feel it necessary that I shall have to ask to be excused from the participation in the manipulation of the King's English at any great length."

Our formal is only two weeks off, so the air is buzzing with, "Who shall I ask?" and ''I'm not going to give him that much house!"

There is an unusually strong bond among our members this year.

We are all tied together by the common interests of Alpha Sigma.

THE PHOENIX ZETA ZETA CHAPTER NEWS Zeta Zeta chapter has just had a most interesting initiation, with our National President Wilma Wilson Sharp presiding at the altar. Those initiated were Martha Brown, Mary Coleman, Celestine Stelze, Pauline Wheeler, and Allie Tanner. We welcome these girls into Alpha Sigma Alpha for we know that Zeta Zeta chapter will be enriched by their membership. The service was very beautiful and inspiring. Several bouquets decorated the house. During the afternoon our house mother, Mrs. Calvert served tea. Later in the afternoon pictures were taken of the actives and alumnae. In the alumnae present there were three members of the Double XX club the original group of Zeta Zeta chapter.

We were very glad to have so many of our former members with us.

Mrs. Sharp gave a very interesting talk concerning the founding of the sorority. The pictures of some of the founders and letters from them show us that the sorority had a very excellent beginning and we hope that we may be able to follow the examples which have been set before us and achieve the goals for which Alpha Sigma Alpha stands. We should instill zeal and enthusiasm into the hearts of those who will be coming back next year. The best way to do this is to set the example ourselves. We that are seniors can do so by showing an interest in our chapter in future years. It makes us very happy to receive letters from sorority sisters with whom we have shared so many pleasant memories.

We are planning to have our spring formal, in honor of the initiates of this quarter and the pledges of next, and are hoping that many of our alumna: will be able to attend, as this is considered one of the homecomings of Zeta Zeta chapter.

Mrs. Nattinger and pledges of Zeta Zeta entertained the actives and town alumnae with a jig-saw puzzle party on Saturday, February I I. Prizes were given to those who were most skillful in handling the jig-saws.

ETA ETA CHAPTER NEWS A little bird came around to see me the other day and my! he could tell me everything about Eta Eta chapter at K. S. T. C., Pittsburg. Here are the things he told me about that bunch.

First of all their president Esther Meyers can no longer be called by that name but instead it is Mrs. Leonard Noel. The bird told me that it all happened January I at her home. She is now living in apartments and continuing her school work. Nice way to begin the new year and every one wishes her happiness.

Next, the big affair for all. We had our mid-winter formal January 28, in the Collegiate room of the Hotel Besse. The room was very cleverly decorated with different colored balloons. The orchestra was grand. After the seventh dance everyone made a rush for the table at the south end of the room. There on it everyone got a package of serpentine and one of confetti. It soon was scattered everywhere and we had great fun with it. The saddest part of it all was wheu it came time to go home. But everyone left saying, "I certainly had a swell time, didn't you?" Several alumnus were back for it.

The next Friday night that same Eta Eta bunch dressed in their best formal went to the Panhellenic at the Mirza Mosque. It was a grand success. It seemed everyone was there. At least there were so many it was sometimes (I mean often) difficult to find the one you were supposed to have the next dance traded with.

It was in a somewhat lower voice that the same bird told me the Eta Eta girls have finished one semester and are working hard on their new subjects. Then his voice raised and he said "The Eta Eta girls certainly brought some very good records to show for their work. We're mighty proud of them."

Of course after I heard that the semester was over and grades were in, the next thing to hear was about the new initiates, that we are so proud of. Tuesday night, February 7, before regular meeting four girls were initiated. This increased the active number from eleven to fifteen.

Annabel Householder is a freshman from Pineville, Missouri and is an English major. Lois Scott, Dorothy Ann Crews and Ruby Fulton are all freshmen from Pittsburg. Lois is majoring in Art, Dorothy Ann in English and Ruby in Foreign Languages. Also we have pledged and initiated Virginia Lamb of Bonner Springs, Kansas. Virginia was a Sophomore and a Kindergarten-Primary education major. She finished her work for life certificate last semester and is now teaching! in her home town.

With the new semester also came changes at the house. Two of the girls that stayed there did not return this semester. Some of the girls changed roommates and one of our new members moved into the house from the dormitory.

had a bean supper for us. Baked beans and they certainly were good as well as the rest of the menu. Then to finish the evening every one ran for the gym for the doors were to open at 6:30 for the MarysvillePittsburg game. Pittsburg won 27-29 so everyone had a lovely time. . Eta Eta is still adding to her group she is proud to say. Tuesday mght, February 21, she added two more. Two new pledges, Nellie Howard and Lora Alice Frogue are now with us. Nellie is a Home Economics major and Lora Alice is a Biology and they are both freshmen. . And then, as the fairy stories say the little bird flew away and I saw htm no more. Maybe he went to tell some other poor editor what her chapter has been doing, who knows- ?

Spring Comes to Eta Eta "The flowers that bloom in the spring, tra-la, Have nothing to do with the case, tra-la."

That is what our instructors would like to think but such is not the condition. A few days ago, we saw a little bush bravely showing bright blossoms and a wave of spring fever swept over us which has had much to do with the case. We would much rather go walking or just sit dreaming in the delightful spring air and sunshine than to sit in the library studying our psychology lesson for tomorrow. We would perfer playing Juliet with our own private Romeo, to sitting in some stuffy room listening to a professor tell u~ of the tragedy of youth.

On days like this the girls at our house are too full of pep while outside the classroom or study. But let them get indoors and you would be surprised at the change in them.

Isn't it strange, how differently spring fever affects different people.

It makes one girl at our house very industrious. She comes in every day, opens all the windows, and cleans her room until it fairly sparkles.

Another girl becomes dreamy-eyed at the slightest opportunity. Another reads poetry by the hour. It was she who told me what Villon says about the coming of Spring. In one ballad he asks "But where are the snows of yesteryear?" And in another he answers his own question thus "The wind carries their likes away."

Over on the campus, spring is apparent in many ways. For one, the way students stroll to and from classes through the warm sunshine just as though they didn't have to be on the fourth floor of Russ in three minutes. Here and there on the benches scattered around the oval we see couples who have another kind of spring fever. For it isn't only a young man's fancy which turns to thoughts of love in the springtime.

Usually there is a young woman whose thoughts are keeping up with his in Cupid's merry-go-round. Here's hoping you have escaped these effects of spring but to those of us who have tasted them, we wish that like the trees on Keats Urn we might never have to bid the Spring Adieu.

THE PHOENIX Our Campus

Our campus is located on a large plot of ground in the southern part of town .

The college consists of thirteen buildings, four of which are off the campus proper. Our many buildings are built around an oval. Russ Hall, the administrative building, sets back from the main street. Our newest building is the Music Hall. It has greatly removed the tension from the other buildings by moving all the studios and practise rooms into bright new soundproof rooms. Next along the oval comes the Industrial Arts Building. If you happen to be along here on Friday you will see large stacks of "Collegio," the school paper, being distributed.

Alongside the Industrial Arts is the Cafeteria. It is run by the school and students can eat here regularly at a very low cost. An annex has been added to the cafeteria which greatly interests us, as it is a place where we can have banquets and informal parties. The Mechanic Arts building is of little importance to us, but many boys find it the home for most of their classes. Carney Hall or Science Hall as it is commonly known boasts our large auditorium, as well as our immense pipe organ.

It faces Russ Hall on the oval. The gymnasium is known to all as the setting for many "all school" parties and our famous basketball games.

The Geology building is the smallest building. Scores of rocks and minerals greet you upon your entrance into this building. The library is the last building on our oval. Many studious persons can be found at work here, while for others it is more of a gathering place.

Off of the campus we find the Horace Mann training school, a grade school in which many students gain much knowledge and practice in the art of teaching. The stadium sets off the east end of the campus home and is the gathering place for many football and track teams. management house occupied by senior girls in the Home Economics department brings thoughts of much hard work and grief to them. Our own heating plant is used to heat all the buildings. Willard Hall, a dormitory for girls, concludes our buildings.

Every girl of Eta Eta chapter admires our campus and we all join in saying "It's hard to beat." .

IOTA IOTA CHAPTER NEWS On the fourth of February we had our first rush party of the new emester. At eight o'clock all of the ru hees and members assembled at Georgia Barton's home in gayly colored pajamas.

In order to test the agility of our minds, we worked jig-saw puzzles.

After tiring of this, we formed a table of bridge, while some of the girls danced and others just "gabbed."

The refreshments were cute little open faced sandwiches cut in odd hapes, Japanese cookies in which we found our fortunes, tea, and salted nuts.

THE PHOENIX A Spread The actives and pledges of Iota Iota chapter were guests at a spread given by the alumnae at the home of Miss Florence Harley. The food was delicious and it was enjoyed by all. After the spread the actives and pledges attended the Drake basketball game.

KAPPA KAPPA CHAPTER NEWS Peace and calm have at last descended on the Alpha Sig house after the giddy strain of exam week. This year everyone would have a week's vacation between semesters. What a grand and glorious feeling that gave. After a Sociology exam I was talking to the boy who sat in back of me during the exam. We were talking about the exam and remarking what a queer one it was. I asked him whether he had expected it to be that type. "I should say not," said he, "And I noticed that you didn't know much yourself." What a comeback that was.

As a little relaxation between studying for exams we did participate in a few social activities. One was our subscription dance, which went over with a bang. It was held in College Hall gym, and was attended by enough people to make it pay, and few enough to make it select.

Another grand celebration was a meeting held at the home of our advisor, Miss Laura Drummond. After the meeting we had a short program and then came the big surprise; just oodles and oodles of cookies, ice cream, chocolate sauce or crushed strawberries. It was so good that my mouth waters while I'm thinking about it.

Two of our girls graduate at mid semesters, Helen Poser and Peg Spry. But much to our joy Peg has decided to come back and take some graduate work.

Rushing season opened with the Panhellenic formal tea held in Mitten Hall, Saturday, February 11. That seemed to be a week-end of teas, for on Friday the Home Ec. department gave one for the new freshman, and on Sunday, Kappa Kappa was entertained at the home of Miss Jean Richmond, advisor to Nu Nu. The last was a perfectly glorious affair, and was thoroughly enjoyed by our girls. It's so grand to get to know personally girls in other chapters. We wish you could all come here to visit us.

These and many more were the various comments which were forthcoming the night of the Soph Cotillion.

Finally, we all get going, and once there we see a lovely sight. In the middle of the dance floor, directly under the huge revolving crystal ball which casts multi-colored lights over the crowd, is a beautiful fountain, decked with lovely flowers and plants of all descriptions. To the lilting strains of Doc Peyton's orchestra, many couples are gracefully swaying around. Suddenly, a sharp flash, and then another informs us that even the photographers are there. Of course, we all turn and face deliberately in the direction of the camera, but alas, there are no more pictures.

Hot-cha! Suddenly, the smooth, slow rhythm is broken by a smashing chord, and behold! they're "Kickin' the Gong Around!" And can they do it? Oh, my!

Then comes intermission, and we all trot down into Mr. Jack Montague's delightful grille to be cooled off with an ice cream soda or a milkshake.

After intermission, the short hour slips by too fast, and before we know it we are in the mob dashing to get their coats. We must not be late--oh, please hurry! And, finally having gotten our coats, we run the distance of the Alpha Sig house-all of ten steps. And are we late ? Far from it! We stand in the vestibule and talk until 1:30 which is the deadline. Goodnight, thank you for the good time-not at all, and so on echoes from all corners of the tiny place. And then-upstairs to discuss the grand event. And so to bed, to rise for eight o'clock classes Saturday morning. Ah me! But such is life.

Registration at Temple University Examinations are over and it is now time to register for the second semester for this school year. The days set for registration are Freshman and Sophomore, Monday, February 6, and Juniors and Seniors, Tuesday, February 8. After one week of vacation we come back to go through once again the ordeal of registration.

We arise with the chickens because we know that the early birds will not have to stand in endless lines for hours.

The first step necessary in registration is making out a roster. If we have passed our courses and have received all our honor points we are allowed to carry a full schedule which is eighteen credits. We have a confe rence with our advisor and together we decide upon a schedule for the semester.

After selecting the course we wish to take, the next thing to do is to sign up in the different departments for these courses. We, therefore take ourselves to Mitten Hall auditorium and this is what we find. t the top of the stairs is a table where someone checks over our

roster. If it is 0. K. we are permitted to continue in line but if there is a mistake we are sent back to our advisor to have it corrected. If we are successful in passing the requirements of the first table we next come to a line of tables at which are seated professors from various departments as French, Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, Education, etc. At these tables we sign up for our classes and the professors we desire: for the courses.

We are then given a number of blank cards or coupons (anywhere from I5 to 25) to fill out. These cards require everything from our roster to our family history; we have so many to fill out we sometimes wonder if the janitor of the University gets one (beside the Deans, Advisers, Bursor, etc.) .

After we have developed writer's cramp we arise to go pay our money. But, alas, we look with dismay upon the endless line of students waiting anxiously to get rid of the check which seems to be burning a hole in tgeir pockets. If we have time to waste we will go to the end of the line and "patiently" wait our turn, but if our time is valuable we will look for a friend near the head of the line and "chisel in" ahead of them.

Finally we come to the last table. How thankful we are that we are almost finished and gladly we hand over our checks to the bursar's handsome assistant. He stamps our class coupons which signifies that we are now ready to be irr the work of the second semester, and have completed registration. .

LAMBDA LAMBDA CHAPTER NEWS Dear Alpha Sigs: As I worry my paw into position to write you a letter, I hear the girls talking about a dance the pledges are giving Friday. I have never been able to dance gracefully, but a jig-saw puzzle will delight me even if I do jar it out of place once in awhile.

I do hope the girls give me a bath Friday instead of Saturday so I can wear the new red ribbon Santa brought me and look nice for the party. Santa was nice to all the Alpha Sigs. For Christmas we got a silver serving tray, dishes, and then a radio from the Mothers' Club.

My! I think the Mothers' Club is just right. They gave us the loveliest pot luck supper spread. There was such a crowd here, and owing to my timidity, I feared I might go hungry, but they are good, and I had a lovely plate of meat loaf.

The other evening I paid a visit to the front room and saw some of the girls dressed just lovely. They did much prinking in front of the mirror and then took themselves downstairs. Seeing Ann Kinney, one of my favorites, going down in a lovely formal, I let my desire rule, and waving my really lovely tail, followed her. Confidentially, I

think I would make a really good model though maybe I am a bit too plump. Going to the front door, I nosed in and saw Ann walking stiffly in front of lots and lots of people, some of whom I hadn't seen before. After remaining awhile, I concluded this must be a style show for rushees and alumnae.

With many a whine, I must record that Ann's glory was short-lived.

On February fourth I saw her attired in a baby's romper suit with a foolish toy duck on a string. Such foolish girls! And much as I hate to tell you, Gladys Kennedy was carrying a rooster. My feelings were rather hurt-I felt I should have had the attention-but I forgave the girls when I saw them polishing candlesticks. Saturday evening, around 9:30, everything grew very quiet. Later I just barked and barked when I saw our pin on them. Gee, I am glad they are real Alpha Sigs now.

On February eleventh, having hugged the fire all week, I was very shocked to see the girls put on formals. I must tell you, though, they did look lovely. There were several girls I didn't know, dressed up too.

I heard much talk about the Arlington Country Club, and it didn't take my clever mind long to decide they were having a formal. I stayed at home by the fire and had a lovely dream of a huge plate of meat. Sometimes I fear I am too much of a home-body.

This letter is short, but being a co-ed, I have found, takes a little work . I will keep you in mind and be nosing into more things. Best wishes to you all.

The Ohio State University Elementary School Dear Alpha Sigs: The University Elementary School was founded in 1930 by Dr. Laura Zirbes in a small building at 47 E. Frambes Avenue. Now this building houses only the kindergartens, first and second grades. A new building on the campus was completed last summer, the building has the grades divided into two units, one is the elementary unit which at the beginning of school in October had an enrollment of 133 children from grades three to seven . The second unit consists of grades seven to twelve and has an enrollment of 215 pupils.

Prof. Rudolph D. Lindquist is the principal and Dr. Laura Zirbes is the director of research for the new organization. The teachers of the elementary unit meet once a week and share their ideas and offer suggesti ve helps to each other.

The children arrive between 8:oo and 8:30 and the staff is on duty at eight o'clock. All classes above the kindergarten remain for lunch on Thursday, and after lunch, classes go on conducted community study trips which are definitely related to class work. We students of Principles 444 or the step preceding practice teaching, are invited to go with

the groups on various tours. They return by three o'clock for dismissal.

Outdoor recess periods are relayed and followed by mid-morning lunch and a rest period in the lower grades. No change in the day's schedule or procedure takes place for visitors and protects the children from being self-conscious and is less strain on the teachers.

MU MU CHAPTER NEWS Dear Alpha Sigs: I wish you could have been to our Jig-saw Party, our first formal rushing party of the winter season-more fun!

To begin with we sent invitations which were made of red showcard and printed with white ink. These were cut up into pieces in imitation of a jig-saw puzzle. When the rushees arrived the day of the party they were given pieces of paper which when fitted together formed the number of the table at which they were to sit. There were three rushees and one member at each table. On the tables were jig-saw puzzles just waiting to be put together! The rushees worked on them until a bell was rung wherein the member at a table graded them on a basis of roo. If the puzzle were three-quarters done they received 75, etc. Then they moved to different tables.

After we grew tired of doing puzzles tallies were collected and as usual the winner received a prize.

But the end had not come by any means! Around the chandelier and over anything that be in its way was woven a "spider web"-of string. (What hours of fun(?) we had spinning that web!) At intervals hung a tag - with a number on it. The girls pulled the tag and unwound and unwound, followed the string upstairs and down and around, and finally at the end received a reward of a little wall plaque.

That was that.

For refreshments we had the "cunningest" little open-faced sandwiches cut in queer shaped pieces to represent more "jigsaw," along with mints and tea. Two of our patronesses, Mrs. Shepard and Mrs. Millage, poured.

We held our second party at Mrs. Shepards, who very kindly opened her home to us. This party was an ocean party-in reality a bridge luncheon.

Invitations were typed on telegram blanks in true telegram fashion: "Mu Mu chapter has reserved a passage Stop First Class Stop for - - - on steamer Alpha Sigma Alpha Stop Docking at Shepard's Harbor Stop on 8r3 Congress Stop will sail on Jan. 28 Stop at r P M Stop Wire back by Wed Stop 7:30 P M Stop 722 Lowell Stop" Our luncheon was 'carried out in green and yellow. We had yellow candles on the tables with little boats made of green showcard with a .green handkerchief for a sail.

NU NU CHAPTER NEWS Freshmen Impressions of Nu Nu's Rushing Parties Dear Jane: Just a line to let you know how very much I enjoy the Alpha Sigma Alpha informal rush party. Everything was such a surprise to all of us. While we were waiting at the Dorm for transportation many whispers went 'round as to just exactly where we were going. We knew that we weren't going to stay at the Dorm, but we were quite sure that we weren't going to the Lodge. They had us all fooled, however, when they took us to Emeline Putnam's.

When we entered an air of festivity and a very "circusy" feeling jumped right into our bones for we were greeted with clowns and "everything." We were ushered immediately to the second floor where we deposited our wraps and prepared for a grand and glorious evening at the Circus. Cries of "Right this way to the Circus," "Come and see the sideshow," filled the air. Half way up the stairs to the third floor we were given a bag of peanuts by a clown, three of which we were required to give as admission to the circus. We entered and there we feasted our eyes on what looked enough like a real circus tent to be one.

Across the top of the room were brilliantly colored balloons and pennants.

Around the room were booths in which were the side-show performers.

We were escorted from one to another by several clowns. In the first booth we saw the "wild man from Borneo" (Tudy Swartz) and when I say wild I mean wild. Next to him we saw the fat lady (slightly bulgy in spots), and the dwarfs . Then we saw the Siamese twins (Tillie Muth and Dot Turner). Can you imagine Jinny Moore as a ventriloquist?

Well, she was-but Emeline Putnam as "Gussie" helped her. After we had all seen the side-show we sat down on the most comfortable pillows and watched the circus. The trained seals (Tudy Swartz, Peggy Brooks and Doris Schweighofer), were very good but Peggy almost lost her seal suit. Embarrassing moments! The grand parade and the act in still life (or something) were entertaining and funny also.

We were all given an apple taffy, after the eating of which we were all "stuck up." In one corner of the room Emily Tabor told fortunesgood ones too. In another part of the room we rolled ten pins and if we knocked all of them down with three balls we won adorable cats or dogs, whichever we wanted.

The remainder of the evening we danced and tried to get rid of the stickiness of the apple taffy.

At ten o'clock sharp we left, for the Dorm girls had to be in at 10:30, and we all heaved a sigh of regret that we had to leave so delightful a party so soon.

I know I never spent a more interesting or entertaining evening and, let me tell you, the Alpha Sigs are a grand bunch of adorable girls.

Dainty wisps of chiffon, exquisite arrays of colors, crackling, swishing sounds of taffeta, sparkling rhinestones appearing just below soft, glowing curls, lovely corsages, and peppy, refined, adorable girls! What was the big occasion? Yes, it was the formal party, in the style of a dinner dance, of the Nu Nu chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, being given at the Clinton Hotel. The dormitory, however, was the scene of excitement first, for exclamations such as these were heard: "Oh, the dickens! My stockings are the wrong shade!"

"Who has an evening bag I may borrow?"

"Somebody took my wave set the other day and never brought it back and, now, I want it!" ... "Yes, dear, in just a minute."

"What will I do with these straps? I can't keep them on my shoulders!"

And in the midst of all this, the telephone rang.

"Oh! Good-night! I'll bet that's Dick!"

"You're crazy, it's Bob." "You're probably both wrong; no doubt, it is Henry."

"Well, I know one thing, it's not Harry. He wouldn't be on time to meet the President, let alone me!" said Jean, not being at all ready.

"You've a caller downstairs."

"Oh! My gosh, what will I do?" _ Finally, strange as it may seem, all the girls had left the Dormitory, safe and sound-and altogether!

The dinner was called for 7:r5, but it was nearly 8:r5 before we were allowed to peek into the dining room. But do not be disillusioned and think that that hour seemed like two or three hours. No, indeed!

Besides the entertainment afforded by the sorority girls themselves, there was a piece of furniture (lamp by its real name) which brought forth many laughs and jokes. The poor thing was called everything from a hoop skirt to a head-dress.

During the first three courses, the room sounded like New Year's Eve-horns, balloons, hats, and candles. No doubt, you ponder over the word, candles. Well, you wouldn't if you had sat at our table. One of us got the idea that he could hold the wider end of the horn over the flame of the candle and, thus, make the flame appear from the end in which one blows to make the noise. Well, I don't know whether this person thought he was a magician or what but if he did, he must have been greatly disappointed for he could do nothing but smother the dear candle's face at least twenty times.

As we began to eat our salad course, what should we find in our

THE PHOENIX mouths but paper! Some devilish, little darling had thrown rolls of confetti onto our salad plates, thinking it would make it more decorative and palatable. Then, everyone seemed to be inspired with such a thought and each table, boy's pockets, necks, and girl's backs had their share of colored ribbons.

We had a most delightful and enjoyable two hours of dancing after dinner (besides gliding gracefully around the floor during the repast) , exchanging dances with the actives, and helping to eat the delicious fivepound box of candy presented to the sorority that night by Dorothy Turner.

It seemed as though the evening had just begun, when the familiar "call of the wild" was heard from yonder corner: "Last dance for the Dormitory girls? " After that last dance everyone made a scramble to say goodnight (for it was late and they simply must be in by twelve) and to express their appreciation fo r a truly wonderful evening to every sorority member and, certainly, to its chaperone, Miss Richmond . Even then, I feel sure that each guest did not feel she had made known to the fullest extent the great time she had had.

The big night had passed in activity but will never pass from our memones.

THAT Eleanor Whitlock and Margaret Dowdy are very nice people to know. Possessed of a sense of humor and a charming personality they have all the attributes of a true Alpha Sig. THAT Catherine Brackin is another one we are lucky to call "sister."

OMICRON OMICRON CHAPTER NEWS Since resuming school in Fall the members of Omicron at Kent State have been very busy with their new sorority house.

It was not definitely decided to lease the house until shortly before the term commenced and so when the girls came back from summer vacations they found a new sorority house all ready-to be fixed. For weeks afterward during intervals between classes curtains were made, and furniture was moved until by the end of October we were ready to welcome all students and faculty on the campus to our housewarmmg.

After that the house was the scene of many a festive gathering. All our rush parties were held there and speaking of rush parties we of A. S. A. secured twenty of the finest all around girls on the campus as pledges. One, Virginia Weiher, Dayton, an outstanding music student on the campus won honorable mention in 1932 out of soo competitors in a National High School Chorus.

Soon our homecoming was upon us and we were busy preparing for the return of alumnae and what a gala time it was for us with our secretary, Dorothy Bowers, Kent, presiding as Homecoming Queen.

After the Christmas holidays we returned to find that two other sororities on the campus had leased houses-takes A. S. A. to start something.

In the middle of January four of our members were initiated into "Velvet Curtain," an honorary dramatic organization. The group includes: Bette Anderson, Mary Jane Fairchild, Dorothy Bowers, and Bonnie Hart.

Shortly before the two Schram sisters Louaine and Winefred, and Janet Jones were initiated into Lambda Chi, the honorary art fraternity at the college.

In addition every class has an Alpha Sig filling one of the offices, so-if we haven't been very active in the PHoENIX you must admit that we fill our time here at Kent.

We have so many things to write about this month that our news can probably be termed better Chapter Chatter.

First of all we have a bit of information about something which has been foremost in the heart of every Pi Pi girl these past few months.

Our dear Miss Elizabeth Small who has advised our chapter ever since it was established, has had to give up all her extra activities. Consequently she can no longer be our advisor. Of course we are gladdened by the thought that by giving up her advisorship she is lessening her duties and going one step forward in regaining her health, but we did hate to give her up.

The gap Miss Small left in our organization has been filled by Mrs. Carolyn Heyman. She is a member of the Art Department faculty, and we surely are happy to have her with us. She is just the type of advisor we wanted; a capable and willing person. Of course we can't put this in print, but she claims to be the crabbiest teacher in the college! We have our opinion about the validity of that fact; what do you think about it?

Pi Pi has two more losses to record. Maxine Nelson, our former chapter editor, has gone to Merrill-Palmer Nursery School in Detroit, Michigan, to study for a term. Every year the most capable senior of the Home Economics department is sent to this school, and maybe you think we're not proud of our Maxine! It is a rare privilege for a girl to have the opportunity of studying at Merrill-Palmer, and we surely are glad that an Alpha Sigma girl was chosen to represent Buffalo State Teachers.

• • • • Velma Heist, also a Home Ec. girl has gone inactive. Sylvia Arend, a new member has taken Velma's place as chaplain of the chapter.

• • • • Here's some honest to goodness gossip. Dottie Nixon is bearing up under the weight of a sparkler that has been parked on her left hand since Christmas. And there won't be any wedding bells for a long, long time (at least so says Dottie).

Our meetings have been busy ones lately. Brushing up on sorority songs, contriving means of swelling our treasury, and planning candy sales at basketball games. We've also been preparing for a special initiation when Mrs. Heyman will be received into our sisterhood.

Chop Suey Drama China invaded Buffalo S. T. C. recently in the form of a Chinese play. To those of you who live near a China town these plays are perhaps rather a common form of entertainment, but to those of us whose nearest oriental contact consists of an order of rice soup, chow mein, ice cream, and coffee, the play was the thing!

For months the college took on an oriental air. The rooms in the art department were cluttered with plaster of Paris masks and elaborate head-dresses. A work shop was set up in the basement of our main building, and from there arose noises which indicated that scenery was being made, and smells which indicated that scenery was being painted.

In the Home Economic building stacks of brightly colored cloth began to take on the forms of Chinese costumes. Then the Art Kraft Klub, a campus organization, took brushes in hand, and plain costumes were transformed intE~ garments of beautifully figured material. From the music rooms came the voices of a Chinese chorus, the wierd strains of an oboe, the thud of a tom-tom, the crash of a gong. The college had gone Chinese. We were preparing for an all-department production.

Then finally, one evening the parts were all assembled and the odd technique of the Chinese drama was unfolded before the student body.

Very little scenery was visible-only the most essential parts. An obvi.ously bored property man lounged in the background. A drab looking group of musicians played strange tunes. Characters came bouncing out onto the stage- a warrior striding up and down, a merchant taking short precise steps around the stage. Imaginary properties were sometimes used, the drum played throughout the entire play, lines were mumbled in a sing-song fashion, stiff masks presented blank expressions to the audience. And that was Chinese drama.

Basketball and Pi Pi Men are decidedly in the minority at Buffalo State Teachers. The natural supposition is that this would result in a dearth of material for the building up of teams to represent the college in the various fields of sport. Such is not the case however, for the men turn out in large numbers.

Basketball is the major sport. Because of the strong emphasis placed on it, we have been able to develop strong varsity and reserve teams, besides an inter-class league.

This year the varsity schedule included thirteen games. Six were played at other colleges and normal schools, the others in our own gym.

A few of our girls who are especially loyal to the team (for reasons of

THE PHOENIX their own) were able to attend the out-of-town games, but the majority of us had to content ourselves with attendance at the seven home games.

Alpha Sigs turn out in full force for these. The dancing which follows each game is an added attraction. Although the orchestra is not always the best obtainable the girls manage to eek out a good time.

Recently we conceived what we consider to be a brilliant idea of a way to combine business and pleasure-why not sell candy and ginger ale at the games? We were the first organization to ask permission to to this, and we were delighted when the authorities endorsed the plan.

At the remaining three home games we will circulate among the crowd and peddle our wares. We hope the venture of the A. S. A. vendors will be a financial success.

Broken Hearted "Bless you heart," would have been an appropriate exclamation for anyone to utter as she entered Evelyn Bell's lovely apartment, all decorated in red and white for the St. Valentine's party which the Excollegios gave for the actives of Pi Pi chapter on Monday, February 6.

That may seem like a long time ago, but we had such a nice time that we want you all to know about it.

When we came in we were each given half of a paper heart which we had to match with an Ex-collegia's in Jig-saw fashion. The girl who matched with Mrs. Heyman was thrilled because we all felt that it would be an honor to have the new faculty advisor as a partner for the evenmg.

Our alumnae were very gracious hostesses. They entertained us with heart cootie, silhouettes, jig saw puzzles, and two unique kinds of fortune telling. (No, we don't believe in fortune telling either, but we think it's fun . Don't you?)

The fortune teller told me that I would receive something very nice soon, and I believe she meant the delicious salad, crackers, cake, coffee, and candy hearts that we were so fortunate to have as refreshments.

"St. Valentine," in the form of Fay Lehie gave us each a funny valentine, then we said good night, and it wasn't until then that I had a minute to stop and think and realize how thoroughly we had enjoyed every minute of the evening.

RHO RHO CHAPTER NEWS The Rho Rho chapter inaugurated the formal rush week with a Valentine Tea on Wednesday, February 15, at the home of Mary Laura Morrisson. The living rooms were most artistically decorated in keeping with the spirit of St. Valentine, our beloved patron. A large cupid

THE PHOENIX with the traditional bow, arrow, and hearts, pointed the way to the dining room.

The guests were received by Mrs. Richardson, house-chaperone, Irene Simonton, Jess Given, and Mary Lillian Gorsuch, president. Miss Margaret Seidel graciously presided at the tea table and was assisted by Misses Evelyn Simonton, Eloise Keller and Harriet Ketchum.

The tea table was very attractively arranged. A bowl of red carnations, sweet alyssum, and fern graced the table, surrounded by ribbons and hearts extending from the chandelier to the table. Delicious ices, cakes, mints, and nuts were served to the guests which included twentyfive rushees, patronesses, and members.

Benefit Bridge A line of cars pa~ked in front of the Alpha Sigma house, cards were the drawing hand. Co-eds with their escorts and friends streaming into the house announced to us, who had worked so hard, that our efforts were not in vain-the Benefit Brigde was to be a success.

On entering the house we immediately heard the clamor of voices, which came from the people at the various twenty tables. The colors of red, white and blue brightened the whole scene. The tallies, score pads, and refreshments all were in keeping with the patriotic spirit of the birthday of George Washington.

The voices saying, "I bid four spades," "I by," etc., were somewhat quieter as the refreshments were served and the clamor of voices finally died away after the last guest had left assuring us that our bridge party was enjoyed by all.

The Formal Dinner The Rho Rho chapter climaxed a most successful rush season with a formal dinner at the Kyoto Inn. The dining room presented a gala appearance. Short talks of welcome were made by -Mary Lillian Gorsuch, president of the sorority, and Irene Simonton, president of the older pledges. A response was made by Jean Morris, one of the new pledges. A short musical program added to the variety of the program.

A spirit of good fellowship pervaded the atmosphere throughout the whole evening. The chaperones for the dinner were: Mrs. Vivian Richardson, house-chaperone, and Miss Margaret Seidel, faculty advisor.

The house was decorated in lovely red carnations and white roses, and everything looked grand. The doorbell rang constantly and about twenty prospective rushees called during the afternoon. Yes, we gave a tea at the Chapter House, February 9, in honor of the prospective rushees. This opened the informal rush season, and brought us into contact with the girls which we wished to rush. Miss Margaret Seidel, our Faculty Advisor presided at the urn. The centerpiece for the table consisted of red carnations. About forty people were served during the afternoon, including members, pledges, the rushees, and our housechaperone, Mrs. Vivian Richardson.

THE PHOENIX The Buffet Supper "Gee, she's cute!"

"I like her."

"Well, she's cute all right but I don't exactly care about her. But wasn't that blond a honey?" All this? I overheard as I sat quietly by, being only a mere prep. I wondered if that was the way they had talked about me when I was a rushee. But I must tell you more about the Buffet Supper. The Rho Rho girls entertained their prospective rushees with a Buffet Supper at the Chapter House February II, from six until seven. About forty persons were served including the members, pledges, rushees, Miss Margaret Seidel, our Faculty Advisor, and Mrs. Vivian Richardson, our House-Chaperone. The decorations were carried out in a color scheme of green and yellow. The refreshments served also carried out this color scheme.

After the Supper Miss Fonda Young, a pledge who is leaving school, was presented with a corsage of red roses. Everyone then went to the Ohio-Wesleyan vs. Marshall Basket Ball game at the Vanity Fair. After the game everyone came back to the Chapter House and enjoyed Bridge and Dancing until time to close the house.

SIGMA SIGMA CHAPTER NEWS Sigma Sigma chapter started the new year out right with six new activies, Jean Blackford, Leila Fauber, Evelyn Gleasson, Harriet Stone, Jaysa Wood, and Roberta Helmecke. Services were held in the G. C. H. S. club room, Sunday, January 8, at 8 a. m.

Pledging services were held for Lillian Dawson, Lauella Perkins, and Kathleen Sleeth, all of Durango, Colorado, the following Wednesday evening.

Sigma Sigma girls have been busy entertaining new rushees . Ellen Trevarthen entertained for Lillian Dawson with two tables of bridge.

Audre Peek won the prize for high score, and Roberta Helmecke took the low. Rushees were entertained at a taffy pull Friday evening, January 14, at the home of Roberta Helmecke. Guests were Opal Wilson, Wanda Viers, Florence Brown, Lou Perkins, Lillian Dawson, Kathleen Sleeth, Eleanor Stone, Rosella Hood, Lola Hurt, and Mrs. Marsh, formerly Miss Gladys Louise Parks of Eta Eta chapter, who is now making her home in Gunnison, where her husband is an instructor of science in the high school.

Sigma Sigma girls participated in the Snow Carnival this year.

All the sororities and fraternities on the campus were held responsible for a stunt. We were awarded the prize, a large box of candy, for having the cutest stunt.

Patronesses and alumni will be the guests of Sigma Sigma at a Bowry dance to be given February 15. We are expecting to have a grand time.

TAU TAU CHAPTER NEWS Tau Tau's Diary December 16: The Panhellenic Formal was a huge success. It would be with Alpha Sigma Alpha leading in the members on the guest list. The dance was in the Women's Building. The room was decorated in Christmas colors and to represent a snow scene. Everyone had a grand time.

December 18: This afternoon, Tau Tau initiated three lovely girls. They were Alta Miller, Nekoma, Luella Mollenkamp, Arnold, Esther Fisher, Glen Elder. It was a very pretty candle-light service.

We indeed welcome them as new members.

December 19: Our chapter Christmas party was at the home of the Winter's girls. A feature of the evening was the singing of carols and sorority songs. There was a short program by the pledges which was followed by the presentation of gifts with Elizabeth Eppstein acting as Santa. Following the serving of refreshments, we were all guests of Freda Eleanor Winters to the Strand Theatre to see "Call Her Savage."

January 7: Miss Eleanor Hawes of Fairport, entertained with a miscellaneous shower for Mrs. Wayne Powell, formerly Miss Alice Nielson. Several of the girls attended the shower and they all reported a very good time.

January 9: Tri Sigma sorority entertained with Open House this evening. Of course we all had a good time.

January 23: What an important day! This marks the beginning of a new semester, and we are glad to have Dot Morrison back with us .

Mrs. Clow is also back on the campus. Of course the grades are now out-Tau Tau is certainly proud of her president as she received sixteen hours of A. CHI CHI CHAPTER NEWS Chi Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha announces the pledging of Frances Amick of Delphi, Indiana and Dorothy Jacobson of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Chi Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha held their initiation services at the Chapter House. The Sanctuary Degree was given at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Th~ Mother Patroness Degree was given at 5 o'clock the same afternoon. After the services we went to the Marott Hotel where the formal banquet was held.

Valentine Tea One of the functions of rush week was a Valentine Tea which was given on January 31, 1933, from 4:oo to 6:oo p. m. at the home of Eileen Brown.

The afternoon was spent informally by getting better acquainted with the rushees.

Delightful refreshments consisting of open sandwiches, heart-shaped wafers, tea and assorted nuts, were served to those present.

The serving table was beautifully decorated with red and white sweet peas. Miss Evelyn Hall poured and the pledges helped serve.

The rushees were presented with flowers as favors.

The very nicest tea I attended, as a rushee, was held at the Columbia Club and was sponsered by Chi Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

After an hour of bridge, tea was served and the rushees were presented with beautiful corsages.

As we left the Club several of the girls invited me to have dinner with them. I accepted their kind invitation and I had a grand time. I become better acquainted with the girls and they were so lovely that I just couldn't help wishing that I might someday be one of them.

And now my wish has come true as I have pledged my ever faithfulness and loyalty to Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Pledge Service To me, the pledge service was a very beautiful ceremony. The services were held at the home of Eileen Brown, Chaplain of the Sorority.

We girls to be pledged were upstairs. As the piano played "We Love Thee Truly" we came down the stairs with our sorority mothers.

A candelabra with five red candles glowed in the stairway arch. The altar was draped in white. One large candle and the smaller candles were placed on the table. The room was lighted by candles.

The service was very sacred and impressive. "When you come to the end of a pledging day" was sung by two of the active members. The last perfect touch was added when I pledged my ever loyalty to Alpha Sigma Alpha. â&#x20AC;˘ Dorothy Jacobson, XX Pledge.

Chi Chi College Party Thursday night was our big night during rush. At "Pan Hell" we had drawn this evening as the one for Alpha Sig to be a hostess to our rushees. After much consideration as to what kind of a party would be an unusual party we decided upon a "College Party". Our invitations which we gave out were a duplicate of the A. S. A. banner on the outside, while in the inside was printed the following: "You are invited to attend a college course complete in one evening at A. S. A. College.

Enroll early and get a standin with the Profs. College located at 2ror North New Jersey Streeet." The downstairs of the sorority house was decorated in accordance with the title of the party. The walls were covered with Alpha Sig banners and many college banners plus cartoons on college life. Placed on conspicious places arounds the rooms were tennis rackets, golf clubs, skiis, ice skates, roller skates, banjoes, college mops, and other sport equipment. The first part of the evenings entertainment was passed in playing games such as were based on our subjects which we take, while others played jackstones, cootie, and worked JigSaw puzzles. Our favors were also in the line of school. They consisted

To go with these we gave some pencil sharpeners surrounded by a world of knowledge which stood on a gold base. Next we passed out our menus. These had a drawing of our pin and a red and white ribbon on the outside. Inside the Rushees found the following menu.

The thing which impressed everyone was the vanila ice cream in the shape of our pins with crimson frozen whipped cream forming A. S. A. and the Pearls. After this we all grouped around the piano and sang college songs, and Alpha Sig songs.

PSI PSI CHAPTER NEWS Psi Psi chapter is glad to announce the formal invitation of eight girls: Doris Cole, Madolyn Derrick, Azile Hathorn, Elizabeth Middleton, Ola Johnson, Mildred Ducos; Clairabelle Ducas, and Myrtle Taups.

They are all enthusiatic workers and we expect great things from them.

We feel that we are very fortunate in having Mrs. C. A. Wagner as our new advisor.

We are all looking forward to a Valentine Party which we are having this week. We are eagerly awaiting the night to see what all our Social Committee has planned for us.

At a recent program meeting one of our patronnesses, Mrs. Pierson entertained with a talk on Louisiana Gardens, and she has favored us by permitting us to publish an excerpt from her interesting and educational talk.

Our Campus Comment alley-vaus?

I'm afraid unless someone who really knows has told you different, you picture us as all speaking French or Negro dialect. Yes, we do have the French accent on our campus, and in our Sorority. And as anywhere in the South where, the old Negro "mammy" was our nursemaid, instead of the white caped and aproned nurshmaid, we all have some of the Negro sayings as 'sho is' and 'yes honey chile'. But on the whole we speak English. Yet it has a "drawl," but it all goes with the other lovely

THE PHOENIX things of Louisiana that seem to swing and sway and remind one of delightful music.

I don't think the buildings make all together a campus do you?

These interesting people, alive, alert, awake to life seem to make L. S. N. C. "hum". However we have a beautiful and splendid plant. Our natural beauty is most interesting. The flowers, roses, bulbs, flowering quince, cactus, others and innumerable wild Bowers, that make the courts one beautiful carpet, on which one steps with care, as not to crush these dainty little flowers. The trees vary, most every tree grown in Louisiana is found on the campus.

To the north-east of main, Caldwell Hall, under a grape arbor, a hugh rack, on which a bronze marker, marks the home of St. Denis. A few steps to the south and we come to the goldfish pond, about ten or twelve feet in diameter. The bed of this is an old syrup kettle, in which our dear forebearer's sugar cane juice was cooked into syrup by the faithful darky.

Let us walk around this building to the other side and we see four tall columns thirty feet high and four feet in diameter. These formerly supported the roof of a convent "The Sacred Heart." A very interesting story is told of this building. Briefly, a young girl is in love the civil war takes her lover away to battle. After a number of years and he hasn't returned, she enters the convent. After her preparation takes the One day when walking, as the story goes, down near the river under a live oak, she meets her lover. They realize their fate, even though he implores her to leave, she refuses. They pledge their love only to meet after death, and after farewell words parted never to see each other again. With weary steps, she treads several hundred yards to the Convent, secures a knife and stabs herself. With her own hand she removes the weapon and with blood on it staggers and falls against the wall. The print of her hand was still to be seen when the building was disposed. Our normal story of supersitition tells us, she is with us yet.

There are so many other things I could tell and make you love it as we do. But there is a song which describes our whole state, the words I'm sending. I wish I could bring you here, by rubbing the lamp to see this lovely campus of ours, to hear the melodies of the South and to know the Alpha Sigs of L. S. N.C.

OMEGA OMEGA CHAPTER NEWS During mid-winter vacation, Omega Omega honored its parents and patronesses at a Parent Patroness Party. It was held on Wednesday evening, February rst, at Scripps Cottage, on the State College campus.

It was a very informal affair-a party at which the girls and their parents could become better acquainted with one another. The evening was spent in playing bridge, ping-pong, and other games and in solving jig-saw puzzles. For refreshments we had the old "stand-by's," sandwiches, cake and coffee. And were they delicious?-our parents all said_ they were. We were especially glad that President and Mrs. E. L. Hardy were able to come to our party. Mrs. Hardy is one of our Mother-Patronesses. It was especially nice that so many parents were able to spend the evening with us. And they all seemed to have a good time. Naturally the girls all did!

On Saturday, February the uth, Omega Omega held the- initiation service at Scripps Cottage on the campus, for Judy Green and Mabel Tilton. That evening we had a banquet which was all in red and white in honor of the new initiates and of Saint Valentine. In the center of the long table was standing an old-fashioned lady, whose skirt was made of red and white carnations, and streamers of the same flowers reached towards the ends of the table. Twenty of the twenty-eight girls in the chapter were there and we did have a grand and glorious time. By nine-thirty everyone was through eating and we left for the rest of the party which was at my house in La Jolla. Everyone took turns playing ping-pong, putting jig-saw puzzles together, and trying to blow soap bubbles through a big, red heart hung from the ceiling. Audrey

Peterson and Ethel Gildberg won prizes in the jig-saw puzzle contest, Dorothy Wright and our pledge Betty Kratz, won the bubble-blowing contest, and Alice Dellmann and Judy Green took the ping-pong prizes.

As the girls left, an "univited guest" approached the house, but fortunately stayed at a safe distance.

Ruth is a very modest little girl and did not mention that it was she who had charge of the whole party in honor of the initiates. It was she who had decorated the table so beautifully. And each girl received a corsage of red carnations, except the initiates, who received corsages of gardenias. It was Ruth who made our evening such an enjoyable one.

Our Alpha Sigma Alpha Initiation Initiation as a whole impressed me as appealing always to the best that is in me. The part which I liked best was the reading of the chapter on love. It filled me with a realization of the undying beauty of friendship. This chapter was read very beautifully by Mary Couvrette.

I was very much thrilled by the way each of my sisters received me into the sorority-as if each one were truly glad to welcome me.

The welcoming formal banquet and party which was given for us after initiation fully convinced me that my acceptance to Alpha Sigma Alpha could never have been duplicated by any other similar experience.

I can truthfully say that I never spent a more pleasant evening. This was in part due to the fact that it impressed me as being a preview of the many more good times locked in Alpha Sigma Alpha's future.
