THE PHOENIX THE 1929, GEOLOGY TRIP The annual field trip of the geology department of 1929, more extensive than any previous trip, covered a period of four weeks and a distance of 4,000 miles, and included a tour of six states: Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and Idaho.

Leaving Pittsburgh on July twenty-ninth, the party of thirty students, with Professor and Mrs. Abernathy and their son, undertook the largest field trip in the history of the department.

The trip had Yellowstone National Park and Salt Lake City as the main points of interest, and offered five hours credit.

The trip was made in a bus carrying thirty-two passengers. The bus became the classroom; lectures and regular class work being carried on as the group traveled.

The Broadview hotel at Wichita became the first lodging place, from which the group traveled westward toward Colorado.

The second night was spent in Holly, Colorado, from which the students began to look for the mountains. Traveling north toward Denver, they were hunting coats as the higher altitudes and rain made the cooler climate noticeable. Denver was reached late in the evening, and here the students were given two days to visit points of interest.

The whole group visited the Denver museum of natural history, taking special notic,e of the geological department in which many minerals were displayed. The capital at Denver, the dome of which is covered with gold, was visited by the students, the stairs leading to the dome providing as fatiguing a trip as a hike in the mountains.

Two days later the group left Denver to travel through the beautiful South St. Vrain Canyon to Columbine Lodge, Estes Park. After entering the mountains enroute to the lodge, the group did its first mountain climbing. Columbine Lodge

THE PHOENIX proved to be a unique and restful spot, with Long's Pe~k, Mt. Lady Washington, Twin Sisters and Estes Cone bordenng the valley.

The day chosen for the trip up Long's Peak was a rainy and cloudy one. Early in the morning the peak could scarcely be seen, owing to the fog and overhanging clouds. At nine o'clock in the morning the party, on horseback, began another day's journey, which proved to be very interesting. Each was provided with a geology pick and lunch sack, and after following the trail seven miles to Boulder Field, !he actual climb began. Because of the high altitude, 13,ooo feet, seven of the party were forced to remain in the shelter cabin at Boulder Field, while the others continued the difficult ascent to the Keyhole, one and one-half miles from the actual top of the peak.

Because of the rain, sleet, and the heavy fog which prevented the view into Wild Basin, the party did not continue the climb, but turned back.

Sunday morning the students were fortunate in hearing Doctor Boas, lady geologist, and member of the Federal Park Service stationed in Estes Park, who lectured on the Big Thompson Canyon and vicinity. Leaving Columbine Lodge, the group drove to Estes Village, down Big Thompson Canyon to Loveland, and on to Fort Collins, Colo.

Monday, August fifth, the class started northward into W yarning. Owing to engine trouble, Casper was not reached until four o'clock the following morning. While in Casper the class made a trip to the famous Teapot Dome oil fields, observing the geological structure of the territory. From Casper the bus passed through the beautiful and dangerous Shoshone Canyon, entered Yellowstone Park by the east entrance. The trips in the park included such points as Yellowstone Lake, the largest in the park; Yellowstone Falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, seen from Artist Point and Inspiration Point.

While at Roosevelt Lodge, the class studied the fossil forests of the region, collecting specimens of petrified wood. Here, a field trip was made under the direction of Doctor Mason head ' of the paleobotany department of the University of California, who was working in the Fossil Forests in the Interests of the

Carnegie Foundation. Mammoth Hot Springs was the next station of interest. Here, a lecture tour was conducted of the many beautiful hot spring terraces.

Journeying south, the class spent much time in Norris Geyser Basin and in the Upper and Lower Basins of the Old Faithful region. These sections of thermal activity, now dying volcanic territory, were especially noted.

At Old Faithful Geyser, spouting regularly every hour, the best example of geyser phenomena, was seen. The shortest interval of spouting ever known for Old Faithful occurred the morning the class arrived, the geyser playing after an interval of only thirty-four minutes. Average intervals are sixty-three minutes.

Handkerchief Pool, so widely known for its excellent laundry qualities, was not functioning, owing to vandalism on the part of earlier tourists, who had emptied refuse into the pool and caused cessation of its activity.

After three days of intensive study in the park, the group traveled south and west to the region of the Great Salt Lake.

Here the class remained three days, visiting the renowned Morman Tabernacle, and attending one of the daily organ recitals, spending an afternoon in the salt water at Saltair, the ple1sure resort and bathing beach of the lake, and studying the Utah Copper Company's mines at Bingham Canyon, the largest opened mining district in the world.

From Salt Lake City the party turned homeward. Traveling across Utah, the group passed through Montrose, Colo., and Monarch Pass, which rivaled Boulder Field at Long's Peak in altitude. From Canyon City to Holly, to Wichita and back to Pittsburg completed the trip.

Notebooks containing a detailed account of the geological structure, altitudes, reports, and maps were required at the end of the trip, together with a classified collection of some forty kinds of rock specimens obtained in the various regions.

According to students who made the trip, the course was an enjoyable one, and much educational value was combined with pleasure. Several of them are already looking forward to next year's tour of the Holy Land, which will last two months and R uth Sh rzver, 路 H H. offer nine hours credit.

A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN ON EARTH See "A Little Bit of Heaven on Earth" at Davenport, Iowa.

Last Fourth of July, my brother, a friend, and I motored to Davenport to catch a glimpse of Heaven made ~y human han~s.

The custodian, "St. Peter", who takes your d1mes and adm1ts the babies free, passed judgment upon the fitness of many to enter this Paradise. This bit of spiritual dream was Dr. B. J. Palmer's idea of beauty and rest. Dr. Palmer's purpose for building this "Little Bit of Heaven" is simply to preach the gospel and influence of beauty, reaching out to visitors through tree, shrub, flowers, birds, waterfall, fish, fowl, superb architecture, music, all wonderfully blended into one gorgeous setting.

A restful, quiet, beautiful spot where visitors may feel, as John Burroughs once said: "I come here to find myself.

It is so easy to get lost in the world."

The entrance-a boulder and glacial stone court-is Purgatory. The outer gates are covered with petrified woods and polished agates from many countries. In Purgatory we find "The Ruins of Greece", a small opening in the wall which contains the remains of many lighted candles, and "The Downfall of China", an opening covered with a curtain, containing a number of pieces of broken china. After passing "St. Peter" we saw the Chapelle Petite, where weddings may be held any day of the week except Sundays and holidays. Next our interest was held by the beauty of the waterfall, the song of the canary, and the playfulness of the gold-fish. We then became pilgrims on our way to a Japanese Shrine, which has been brought to occidental America. Who knows but that this wonderful Wishing Buddha may cause your wish to come true?

This Buddha is over I,Ioo years old and is valued at $5o,ooo.

To this shrine, while it was in the Old World, came many pilgrims to worship.

I returned with two souvenirs of the trip: the one a Hippoc~mpus, or sea-horse, which had been obtained in the Philippme Islands; the other was the following inscription, found on a nearby building, "The mark of a man of the world is absence of pretension. He does not make a speech; he takes a

low business tone; avoids brag, promises not at all, performs much."

On this same day we saw the United States Arsenal in Military Park, Rock Island, Illinois. At the entrance we were halted by a policeman who warned us not to "speed", and not to use a kodak. This park contains a beautiful golf course and a cemetery containing many rows of small white tombstones which mark the graves of Civil War soldiers. In the same city we saw the new Blackhawk State Park which overlooks the Rock River and surrounding country. The pavilion, it is said, is located at the spot where the famous Blackhawk had his watchtower.

One more place of interest which I visited was the Starved Rock State Park. I enjoyed the view of the beautiful Illinois River from Lover's Leap, about which there is a legend of romance. An Indian maiden jumped from this ledge into the swirling waters below, because her lover failed to return. Visits to the French Canyon, Horseshoe Falls, and the Devil's Nose were enjoyable, even if we did get路 "as wet as drowned rats" out there in a canyon.

Do you wonder that I am nearly "broke" after attending . two weddings and five showers? But it all makes life worth while, and I am happily looking forward to the beginning of a new school year at Washington High School, Washington, Illinois. . Bussell, Mary Louzse .

WITH THE CHILDREN I had the most delightful vacation this summer-playing, but play plus wages. I had entire charge of two children, Winifred, nine years of age, and Tommy, five. Little Tommy always wanted to wear his daddy's neckties and Winifred loved to dance and wear mother's beads and bracelets. But best of all was the old dress up box just filled with old fashioned dresses and all kinds of costumes.

The family had a lovely home on Lake Erie near Cleveland.

They kept eight servants, so I did nothing except play with the children. Near the house was a little woods where we had

picnics or played Indian and cowboy. We called ourselves the Xerxes tribe. We made up a tribal song and sang it to the tune of the Pagan Love Song. We had a treasure cave in which we put perfectly round stones as treasure. And only perfect ones were accep~ted. Sometimes the butler or chauffeur brought our lunch and blankets out to us in the woods and there the children took their naps. You should see this dignified Alpha Sig playing in the sand pile, playing leap frog and keeping wild Indians from becoming too wild.

The children saw their father only on Saturday, so they kept him busy. They liked nothing better than long rides in the rumble seat of the Packard to the soda fountain or to a movie. Often their father took movies of us playing, and then he showed them on a screen the next week.

The thrilling event of the summer was Winifred's birthday party. Eleven children came, all ready for a big day, and they weren't disappointed. A luncheon was served on the big porch. Snappers, prizes, colored hats, and riddles on place cards added to the fun. Winifred's daddy took movies of h er while she cut her cake. She looked like a little queen. Her name was written on the cake, and inside were prizes for each child. After this, imitation firecrackers were exploded, from which balloons and whistles came. After games, a movie, "Hicksville Terrors", was shown.

If anyone enjoys playing with children, it makes a very interesting way to earn money. Now I'm happy to be back to football games and formals.

A TRAVELOGUE Tumbling out of bed to the tune of "Little Ben" is not one of my favorite pastimes. However, it was with a true feeling of elation that I silenced my clanging roommate and donned one of the few dresses which were to go vacationing with me.

Even sleep could not quite close my eyes to the beauty of Ohio hills emerging from their misty wrappings into the warm July sun. Through the drowsy little town which is the home of Muskingum College, over the "S" bridges, down "corkscrew"

hill, and we were crossing the river into West Virginia. All day long we turned curves and climbed or descended baby mountains until dusk halted us at Harrisburg, at a spot so near the Pennsylvania capitol that we felt it our duty to explore the building which has become so famous in the records of political graft. Several Pennsylvania collections in the museumlibrary next door likewise proved interesting.

Down through the homes of the "Quaker Maid" and the Quaker, Pennsylvania, we sped the next morning in order that we, too, might join the week-end parade on the Boardwalk.

Though one walks miles each year on this famous promenade, there is always something of interest, a new exhibit, a new picture made by the sand sculptor, or only the ever changing seas, the one of water, the other of faces. All types and all races play together at Atlantic City. This year the Walk was particularly lovely at night, for in celebrabon of its Diamond Jubilee, the city has erected an arch decorated with glass prisms.

This makes a gorgeous sight at night when the rays from the scores of light fixtures similarly adorned shine upon it. Colored lights advantageously placed on several of the castlelike hotels and the rainbow beams which play upon the ocean waves add splendor in other localities.

Searching for brighter lights, we turned toward Broadway.

Nevertheless, our eagerness to reach Times Square did not deter us from a side trip to Lakehurst to view the Graf Zeppelin, which had arrived only that morning. A smaller blimp floating about in the vicinity gave us an idea of how this monster or the smaller Los Angeles would appear in the air.

In New York we become typical tourists. We "rubbernecked" on a Fifth Avenue bus as far as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, walked through the Columbia campus, and went into Grant's Tomb, took the night trip to Chinatown, and, of course, went to several shows. Then, as every good Latin teacher should, I explored the Roman section of the Metropolitan Art Museum and (not being a good Latin teacher anyway) becoming tired of that, wandered into other regions, got lost in an Egyptian tomb, and cursed the Fate that made me wander so long in Rome when I could have spent more time in the fascinating American wing.

In Boston, aside from seeing such interesting shrines as the House of Seven Gables and the home of "Little Women", to me the drive to Marblehead and Gloucester was the most enjoyable of all experiences. Can you imagine a perfect day, bluest sky, rippling waves, scattered sailboats, rocks, bright Bowers, green lawns, and picturesque houses? 'V'hen my ship comes in, I know I shall sail straight to the Massachusetts coast.

At Fort Ticonderogq the day was as lovely with the bright sun lighting the waters of glassy Lake George. To imagine that this old fort, situated in such a peaceful landscape, had ever been the scene of attacks was indeed hard, although lifelike figures of soldiers, muskets, arrows, and powder horns might be seen in the long building of the fort. However, the cannon which poked their black noses through the ramparts were as silent as the lake.

For days it seemed (though in reality it was less than two days) the trusty Buick bore us up and down mountain roads, through air as cold as Alaska but delightfully scented with balsam. In spite of the beauty which surrounded us, it was almost a relief to emerge into a warmer zone and find more level roads in northwestern New York and western Pennsylvania. But-Ohio hills had lost none of their charm, and we were proud to remember that the .only Y bridge in the world is found in Zanesville.

Camp Onawandah, a Girl Scout camp near Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, is situated along the Susquehanna river, which is an ideal spot for one's spiritual education, as well as one's physical well-being. One of the most beautiful customs of camp was the Indian ceremony that was held each Sunday evening around the campfire. There were five units in camp, and each week one girl from every unit was selected to receive an Indian name. These girls were chosen by the camp counsellors and director as the best all-around sports and Girl Scouts.

The girls wore Indian blankets, and sat around the campfire.

The director of the camp then called forth the girls chosen to receive the Indian names, and as each was called to the fire, she was given her own name on a piece of bark, and was asked to throw it in the fire. After that she was always called by the Indian name that she had received. Indian songs and dances brought the ceremony to a close.

Ledoli, the pioneering unit, was composed of fifteen girls with two counsellors taking charge of them. Living as p-ioneers, they cooked breakfast and supper, and made all kinds of woodcraft during the day. .

Camp, it seems to me, is one of the finest places for developing that Something within a person that brings out one's real character and personality.

MILES AWAY If a rainbow was s6o miles long I would say that I had had a peak at my rainbow this summer. Buffalo was the starting point-Boston, the end-and a very desirable end. If you have seen large cities and liked them, don't forget Boston. If you have seen large cities and have not liked them, try Boston. It has what all large cities have and more. Streets and buildings are not just numbered, but really named. There is an interesting or historical significance about everything. The Spirit of '76 is still in existance.

No place could have been a more pleasant setting than the one that Boston affords for the Anniversary Convention of the American Home Economics Association. It was at this convention last July, that I had a very valuable experience. The experience and privilege of presiding at the Student Home Economics Club Meetings. Nearly every section of the United States was represented at these meetings. All of those present came to obtain ideas to help their club and to give ideas to help

THE PHOENIX other clubs. We of Alpha Sigma Alpha know that the problems confronting a group trying to work together are many.

Most of these girls realize that the club problems of poor attendance, waning interests and unwillingness to co-operate comes from the lack of real and inspiring goals to strive for.

Everyone was out to obtain new plans for a more progressive year's work, something that would spread and broaden the interest of High School and College girls and of communities along Home Economics lines.

I wish that every one of you might have had the opportunity of working with this group of girls-the girls from the South, where Domestic Science work is in the stage of infancy; the girls from the West, where Domestic Science has been developed by careful experimenting; and the girls from the East, where Domestic Science is of long and high standing. If you could have heard all of them in the midst of their discussions I am sure you, too, would have felt that the position of workers in this field is being raised higher and higher.

The girls' trend of thinking and planning was guided by bits of information and encouraging words from women o ~ varied experiences. From these older workers the girls could obtain a clearer vision of what has been accomplished and what is to be accomplished.

To meet these Home Economics leaders was in itself a treasured experience to many of us. Perhaps you, too, would like to meet the editor of the Good Housekeeping, and the Journal of Home Economics or the author of your text books and leading magazine articles or the leaders of Home Economics in Hawaii, Alaska and Europe, or the leading food and textile research workers. If you should meet them I am sure you, like all of the student delegates, would go home with the determination that every job worth doing is worth doing well.

THE INN I stood on the small hill on which our cabin was and looked down at the Inn and its little cluster of buildings at the foot of the grim, dark heights of Mount Crawford. In the stillness of

the moonlit night, the Inn seemed to cast a long shadow toward me, sinister and ter:rible, like the shadow of the Ash in George MacDonald's "Phantastes." I turned and ran to the cabin, but the shadow pursued me even there.

It was inescapable. For three months I, with four others, poured every ounce of physical and mental strength into it.

We spoke in terms of the Inn, we dreamed in terms of it; our hours away from it were as surely watched over by it as the hours spent within its pervading shadow. People came for a night, a few days, perhaps, and remarked in passing on the atmosphere of the place, its quietude, and genuine oldness. We smiled and agreed, and kicked each other under the table. They did not notice that the Duncan Phyfe sofa in the music room was upheld by a log in the back; they were unaware that the promise to mend the broken window in room one was only a placating gesture and meant nothing. They did not see as we did, each day, that same Place visibly absorbing a little more of our vitality, our balance, our joy of life. For it was strangely true that no one ever sang aloud, or laughed whole-heartedly while at the Inn .. .. One or twice we escaped it- when hand in hand two or three of us would go surreptiously over the railroad bank and down the tracks to the swimming pool.

Once in the water we were free . . . and we knew once more gayety and spontaneous mirth, and a certain peace. Reluctantly we were drawn back to the Inn as evening came on.

And even tonight, as I sit watching the city street outside my window, I seem to see again that lengthening shadow of 路 the Inn, and feel its numbing chill. I feel as if I had escaped some deadly peril, and yet as if it were still trying to discover me, in the fastness of my city fortress.

THE PHOENIX the liner pulls out from the waving crowds on the dock until you hear the "Welcome home" of familiar voices.

We sailed from Boston on the President Wilson, going the southern route to Italy. Our first stop was at Lisbon. I shall never forget my first view of the old world. It was just before dawn. Far on the eastern horizon appeared low, violet cloudlike masses. Next came the rhythmic flashes from the lighthouse on the shore. The violet increased in height until a mountain was silhouetted against a pale, pink sky. The Moorish Castle at Cintra took form, and a fiery sun climbed slowly and deliberately from the hills behind it. We moved up the river; a city of ivory, buff and pink lay on the hillside. I had caught my first glimpse of Europe.

It would take too long to tell of the beautiful sail from Lisbon to Naples, clinging close to the Spanish coast, passing through the Straits of Gibraltar, and gliding over the blue surface of the Mediterranean. 路 Then we passed through Italy as far as Venice. It was hardly an effort to relive the days of ancient Rome and Pompeii in the midst of so many ruins. How rich Italy is in beautiful churches and cathedrals. How many of the world's masterpieces are reposing in her museums.

But I must pause long enough to tell you of our trip along the Dalmatian coast. On a delightful moonlight night our gondola took us past the groups of singing Venetians to the beautiful San Marco ship which lay at anchor.

The coast of Jugo-Slavia is barren and rugged, quite a contrast to that of Italy. Its very barreness makes it fascinating, 路 particularly in the twilight hour. Because of the intense heat, we did not land until we reached Dubrovnick. What a charming spot Dubrovnick is! The ancient city is so small one can walk across it in eight minutes. Its walls and towers still stand completely enclosing the city. The marketplaces all over Europe are fascinating and none more so than this one. In the early morning the peasants come in with their melons and ripe figs to sell. It is the peasants themselves that give the charm to the place. The men wear baggy trousers, brilliant jackets and fezes, and shoes with turned up toes. The women are pictures in their heavy red or blue dresses and snow-white headdresses.

THE PHOENIX One of the interesting buildings in Dubrovnick is the Rector's Palace. This vies in beauty with the Doges Palace in Venice. The arches on the exterior of the palaces are equally beautiful, but the courtyard of the Rector's Palace is superior.

The cloisters of the Dominican Monastery are the most magnificent I have ever seen. Both of these buildings were built in the fifteenth century.

Our hotel was located just outside the city walls. It was hemmed in on three sides by subtropical gardens and on the fourth by a crystalline sea of jade and azure. Eternity would not be too long to bask there in the sunshine or to seek shelter under the friendly palms.

I have given you a bit of the most unusual part of our trip.

Now I must hurry across the Italian Lake, through Switzerland with its gorgeous vistas, along the Rhine with its innumerable legends, through Paris with its lively pleasures and across the Atlantic with its terrifying gale-back home.

"AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL" I traveled from coast to coast this summer, by various and sundry modes of travel, such as train, motor car, river boat, muleback, bus. For a wonder, I did not hike, and I regret to say that I was too poor to make use of the excellent airplane service. I did not "see American first", for I traveled in Europe last summer, but I have been seeing the old U. S. A. this summer, and she is wonderful. I swam in both oceans this summer.

Last June, at the close of school, I went from Canyon, Texas, to my home near Kirksville, Missouri, and joined my father and mother and cousin on a motor trip to the east coast. We made our first stop in Parkersburg, West Virginia, from where we drove down the Ohio River to my father's birthplace. We also visited my mother's birthplace in Lewis County, West Vir-

THE PHOENIX ainia. In fact, we combed the state from east to west and from

~orth to south. I can easily believe that West Virginia is the most mountainous state in the Union, and deserves its name, "the Alps of the United States." I had never driven in mountains before, but found it great sport. My cousin and I took turns driving.

We then . went on to Washington, D. C., where Esther, my sister, joined us on her way home from Scarsdale, a suburb of New York City. After visiting the most noted things of interest in our capital, we drove south through picturesque and historic old Virginia, stopping at Mt. Vern on for a half day and in Alexandria, where my great-grandfather used to live 路and have a store.

We visited many interesting places in Virginia, including Richmond, Yorktown, where the houses still standing date from 1695; old Jamestown, with its ancient ruins, anci statues of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith; Williamsburg, with its beautiful old college buildings and rambling picturesque campus (William and Mary College), all designed by Thomas Jeflerson; Monticello, the exquisite home of Jefferson, commanding such a superb view from its mountain top; Newport News, where we went swimming in Chesapeake Bay; Staunton (home of Wilson), and Charlottville. But our real destination in Virginia was Natural Bridge, the birthplace and childhood home of my grandmother. It was even more beautiful than I had expected.

We then drove homeward across the Blue Ridge Mountains, ferried the Ohio River again, stopped at my mother's old Kentucky home in Lewis county, on the edge of the Blue Grass country. Although I have not seen quite all the states in the Union, I believe I can safely say that the Blue Grass section of Kentucky, which centers around Lexington, is the garden spot of America. Every farm, better called Estate, with its big colonial home, usually of red brick with white pillars, its extensive smooth green lawn shaded by many great old trees, and the white board fences enclosing beautiful rolling pastures with literally hundreds of fine race horses and colts crrazina there, is like a golf course in general appearance. It i; a ga;, festive land of beautiful old homes, truly the land of "fine horses, good whiskey, beautiful women, and hospitality."

From here we drove through the great wheat and corn fields of Indiana and Illinois, across "Old Man Ribber", the Mississippi, and. home. After about ten days of lazy life spent in keeping house, lounging on our own front porch with a late magazine and being entertained by a small nephew and two small nieces, I boarded the Santa Fe and went to Los Angeles.

If you like contrasts, just leave old Virginia or Kentucky, with their quiet, green pastures, wooded hills, big shade trees, steep-roofed old English or white-pillared colonial houses, conservative people, and rainy afternoons; and in a few days' time arrive in Southern California, with its deserts, its clean-cut, barren mountains, orange groves, palm trees, gorgeous flowers , shrubs, fountains and formal gardens, its thick-walled Spanish houses, its China Town, gleaming white beaches washed by the blue Pacific, and perpetual sunshine, where life seems carefree and lazy, and the people are brown from living out of doors. In this land of sunshine and flowers, airplanes, and old Spanish missions, I went to art school at the Otis Art Institute for six weeks. It was delightful doing the things that I most love to do, namely, designing, painting out of doors, and etching, in this atmosphere.

I was sorry for the summer to end, to leave that fascinating work, and my newly-made friends there; but now that I am here, I am indeed happy to be back in the invigorating atmosphere of West Texas, and to greet old friends again. On my way back from California, a路friend and I stopped off at Grand Canyon, that tremendous colorful wonder. That is where I rode on muleback, fourteen miles in one day, straight down and then up again.

GENEVA GLEN Geneva Glen is one of three summer camps of the International Council of Religious Education. There is Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, and Geneva Glen in Colorado. The International Council holds these camps for boys and girls and adults. The organization is very large and the training in religious education given is ex-

THE PHOENIX tensive. The directors of the young people's department are Dr. P. R. Hayward and his associate director, Mrs. Roy A. Burkhart.

Geneva Glen is the youngest and smallest of the three camps, but the camp is growing rapidly. The camp is twenty-five miles from Denver, nestled in a lovely gree~ glen just above the tiny village of Indian Hills. Mountains are all around, but if you climb high enough and seek hard enough you can peep between two mountain peaks and find Denver, a gorgeous Denver at night.

There were one hundred thirteen girls and over twenty faculty members at camp. We were fortunate enough to have Dr. Hayward and Mr. Burkhart both, besides many others from the Chicago office of the International Council, and workers in Religious Education. We had our classes in the morning for training in some sort of religious work. In the afternoon we had games, hikes, and sports of all kinds. After Hillside vespers (not enough can be said of the beauty and inspiration of those hillside worship services) we had our creative play hour, and then taps.

The camp has an Indian organization. There are six tribes or Wicotas, each Wicota signifying a search in the Christian Quest. There are quests for new heights, n:ew discoveries, new truths, self, others, God. Each camper is a searcher or Aketa.

Each Wicota has a chief or Wanji. The tribes have many duties, such as being responsible for creative play nights, composing songs and stunts, competing in athletics, etc. The Wanjis are privileged, being allowed to live in the most desirable cabin with the Great Searcher (Camp Director) or Aketa Tanka. Mrs. McClintock was Wanji of the Onspe Wicota.

There is a Geneva Key awarded to Religious Searchers.

There are four different awards, each recognized by the jewels in the key. The key is as great in the religious field as the Pi Beta Kappa in the educational.

This was my second year at camp and next year I am secretary of Geneva Glen, so I am planning to return.

ON WISCONSIN! Vacations-today they are just memories. They are queer things, these vacations-a pause in the year's occupations, to relax. At least that is how we usually think of them. Most of us exert ourselves a great deal more during our vacations, while some of us do practically nothing. Still, it is vacation time.

This year I spent my vacation at the University of Wisconsin. It is an ideal place, and according to my specifications I had a real vacation. Kathryn Young, another alumna of Zeta Zeta, and I went to Madison together. . Both of us were interested in Physical Education and natura1lv our work remained within the walls of that department. The day began with a seven-thirty o'clock hockey class. It was held out at Camp Randall, just a mile and a half from the house. After that we had three other practical classes. By eleven-thirty we both felt as if we were read y for lunch and a brief rest. At two-thirty we had our last class in Bascom Hall, at the top of the hill.

If you have ever climbed the hill once a day for a period of time, it is a privilege you will long remember.

We both had the honor of staying at the Kappa Alpha Theta house. It is a large Spanish type house situated on Lake Mindata. There were thirty girls living there. The Southern girls were in the majority and by the close of the term most of us had acquired many southern expressions. The routine of the house ran like a well regulated clock, wound up for six weeks.

It was a perfect example of what a sorority house should be.

All of the girls were congenial, though they belonged to six different sororities. Not a single girl was reported for misconduct during the six weeks.

Since the house is situated on the lake we spent most of our leisure time swimming, canoeing and sailing. Madison is certain! y an ideal place to spend a vacation.

Our homeward trip carried us through Chicago in order to spend several days with Dorothy and Kathleen Clark. Needless to say we spent an ideal summer, and now our vacation is just a memory.

FRANCE AND ITALY Who shall explain the miracle that happens when you find just the niche of earth which smiles especially for you? An undefinable magic comes to pass when your heart takes root for a few months a year in a life that is strongly different from your own and yet strangely blended. This was my reaction â&#x20AC;˘ when I visited France and Italy, and perhaps answers the question why I chose to visit these two countries again in preference to several other countries I had visited before. A world where people cling to old customs and traditions and retell old legends peculiar to their respective localities.

We landed on French soil at Havre and went by train to Paris, passing through quaint country places with splashes of bright poppy fields here and there adding color to the beautiful surroundings. Within a few hours we were in Paris. Paris the inimitable! It is no distinction to love Paris, everybody does. Perhaps not all for the same reason, but however varied the motives, opinions seem unanimous that Paris is very lovable. One can go about just as easily speaking English as if one were in a city of the United States. Paris itself, the glorious, fascinating city, is free for visitors to see, to play in, to absorb.

The Louvre, Eiffel Tower, the Trocadero, Napoleon's Tomb, the Madeleine, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, Concorde Place, The Pantheon, Triumphal Arc of the Star Place are places that cause American hearts to leap for joy. No longer are these names mere pictures in books, but realities far more attractive.

Alas, we must leave Paris much too soon, but we can comfort ourselves with the thought that we shall return again before we sail for home. The charm of journeying through France is indescribable. It is a land of many moods. Up and down curly white roads we sped, through silver gray hamlets of tile roofed houses, past village chapels and washing pools with a cross nearby to bless the women as they knelt. We passed through long tunnels piercing the mountains and on to the picturesque Riviera. We have now crossed the Alps to the sea, to the water of the bluest of all seas, the Mediterranean.

by the Italian customs officers to declare contraband articles.

Since we had none, we were not disturbed further, and morning found us in sunny Italy. There bright rays seem to be reflected in the happy, smiling faces of the charming Italian people. It is a land of well stocked barns, herds of cattle grazing in the valleys, of peasant tarts drawn by oxeh slowly climbing the winding roads. Vineyards and cultivated fields spread out on every side.

Evening found us approaching St. Paul's outside the dty walls ahd we knew we were in Rome! Such a thrill! The Eternal City! The Rome of the Caesars, the Coliseum, the Partheon, the Catacombs, St. Peters, and the mahy other places of historical note. What memories they hold for us!

Imagine, if you cah, seeing this magnificent city by moonlight from each of its seven hills. Later we were afforded the rare privilege of having a private audience with the Pope. My companion and I were presented by her brother, a religious man held in high esteem. Thtough him we were admitted to the Consistory which created the Cardinal of Milan. It was a . . very 1mpress1ve ceremony.

We left ltal y for Carcassorlne. Yes, I have been to Carrassonne, and you must go, too, some day and stay at the Hotel de la Cite inside the walls, and be taken to yout beautiful room in the tower like a princess of the Middle Ages. It is ail to wonderful for words. Yes, you will find Prince Charming there too. Ah, I must not tell you too much. You must go to Carcassonne yourself.

BUENA VISTA After ten weeks of summer school at Western, I spent the most enjoyable five weeks in Buena Vista. The ten weeks before seemed like years, and strange to say, the five weeks flew by on wings.

About two weeks befbre the close of summer school I was asked to help with the "Frosh Bible." The last few days I spent in collecting material for the book. At last the book was ready to print, and I was ready to depart for my long looked for trip.

The trip home was very slow, but it was sure. I left Gunnison about six o'clock on the "Leaping Lena" (narrow gauge) train. As the train climbs the mountain one can look far down into nothing but a bottomless pit, it seems. A few yards ahead the engine climbs gradually, and the large light shines upon the track as the train winds back and forth . After much puffing and working, it reaches the large snow sheds and then starts the downward stretch. I arrived in Salida about ten o'clock. I remained there all day Tuesday with friends.

Then, just as I had hopes of getting home, a terrible 路 rain storm came, washing stock, buildings and railroads with it.

By Wednesday morning the storm had settled enough to let a few trains and cars run. Roads were rough for two weeks.

The next four weeks were gone in no time. On Labor Day I had my first ride in an airplane. It was very thrilling, and I enjoyed it very much. That evening I went to the largest ball of the year, but it was the one dance I did not enjoy. The hall was so packed that it was impossible to do anything but walk on everyone else.

I attended the Annual High School beefsteak fry. The Frosh were put through some of their initiation and in the evening we all went to the High School dance. It surely did seem good to be back with some of the old friends.

There were six or us girls home from school, four of whom are at Western this year, and we had several swims, picnics and parties. When I returned to Gunnison I found that the sorority house had just been papered, so I spent the rest of my time cleaning house.

ARIZONA IN JULY Perhaps my friends were not wholly unjust in giving me credit for displaying even less sense than usual. Nevertheless, I had wanted to go to Arizona for months-no, even for yearsand at last my father had consented to take me. Could I let such an opportunity slip by-even if it were in July? Maybe I should have, but I didn't.

morning of the sixteenth, actually wearing coats. Before many hours the scorching winds and grimy dust of the Mohave Desert were ours to have and-alas-to hold for what seemed eternity. Long before noon, with my enormous sun goggles, my hair pushed behind my ears, and my dust and perspiration covered complexion, I must have been a sight worth beholding.

(I wouldn't venture looking in a mirror myself.) But by six o'clock that night in Needles, I was beyond description, without the least doubt. (By the way, the person who said Needles is the hottest place in the United States certainly knew what he was talking about.)

Thus far, however, we had not left California. I never shall forget the thrill I experienced upon first viewing Arizona territory just before crossing the Colorado River. The fact is that from this time until we crossed the same river on our return trip I was the victim of one sensation after another. The very night we crossed the State line I saw my first summer lightning. (Yes, one could guess easily that I had lived practically all of my life in California.) And then, the next morning, for the first time I visited a real mountain mining town.

However, this particular example with its ramshackled, unpainted houses, perched at all levels along the sides of the rugged hills, made anything but a favorable impression on me.

But probably my biggest thrill came after we had reached the district in the northern part of the state where the great cattle ranges lie. There I witnessed a real, "honest-to-goodness" round-up. The cowboys on horseback, rounding the cattle into enormous pens preparatory to the branding process, looked as one who just had read a western novel would imagine. (It was enough to make most any American girl's heart miss a beat or two.) As we traveled farther East and gained altitude, we reached the big pines and some real lumber towns. Never before had I seen such huge logs being hauled directly to the sawmills from the forests. The odor of the freshly cut wood certainly was a treat not often experienced by an inhabitant of a beach town. Then when we turned south and reached the wide stretches of open country once more, I saw for the first time in m y life several of the famous "dude" ranches. Large gateways with such signs as "H and H Bar" and "Flying W "

THE PHOENIX marked the entrances which led back into the hills to the ranch houses and stables. During the summer months, only the managers live on the ranches. It takes lower temperatures to attract Eastern men and women of leisure!

But what of that terrible heat I was to find in Arizona? The weather had been wonderfully cool ever since we first had arrived-that is, until we started south. I admit, however, that through the central sections and on the way home by way of the Southern route, we felt plenty of heat that was unmistakably hot. The trip was worth its uncomfortable moments just the same. I'd be willing to go again-even in July!

'SEEING AMERICA FIRST" "Have a good time this summer?" some one asks.

"You bet I did," is my ready response. Then I try to tell in a short conversation the high points of interest during my trip the past summer. Never have I spent a busier or more enjoyable three months than I did from the time I left Winfield, Kansas, as a member of the "Omnibus College", on May thirty-first, until I returned to my home in Pond Creek, Oklahoma, September first. .

In all we traveled 7,ooo miles, and through twenty-five states and two provinces of Canada, studying field and museum biology, history, literature, customs, home life, industries, and everything that came to our attention. The camp life and the friendships formed in our party of 170 will never be forgotten.

The high points of interest pass oefore me in rapid succession. Through the southern states I see again the cotton fields, rice fields, cypress swamps, plantation homes, Memphis, the cotton mills of Huntsville, Alabama, Muscle Shoals and the Wilson Dam at Florence, Alabama; Shiloh Battlefield, Chattanooga, and Lookout Mountain.

Then followed three wonderful days in the Great Smoky Mountains, near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where we climbed Mt. LaConte. The life of the mountaineers and their hospitality was greatly enjoyed.

mountains, we saw the Natural Bridge and Endless Caverns, both wonders of nature. I hurry on in memory through Harpers Ferry, and Frederick, Maryland, to Washington, D. C. How could we ever forget the six delightful days in the nation's capital? Our dreams of visiting the Capitol, White House, Library of Congress, Arlington, Mt. Vernon, and many other famous places, were at last fulfilled.

On our way to New York City we visited Annapolis, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Asbury Park. What fun we had surf bathing in the Atlantic!

New York at last! The crowded subways, Broadway, theatres, skyscrapers, ocean liners (yes, we were on board the Leviathan), museums, Bronx and Central Parks, Bedloe's Island and the Statue of Liberty, and countless other attractions kept us busy for a week. Here I spent eight weeks, during six of which I attended the summer session at Columbia University, where I met students from the four corners of the earth. Don't think that I was not busy with school work.

Other trips around New York were a boat trip up the Hudson, past Sing Sing (no, I didn't stop) to West Point, and a motor trip to the Washington Irving region, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

Yale University and Bowl at New Haven, Connecticut, and Providence were visited on the way to Boston. How interesting old, historic Boston is! Besides Old North Church, Paul Revere's home, and dozens of places of interest in Boston, we made trips to Cambridge, Lexington and Concord, Salem, Marblehead, and a boat trip to Plymouth. History just came to life for me this summer.

The scene now shifts from Boston through New Hampshire and Maine, through the birch forests and along the Kennebec river. We had a great time peeling birch bark to use for post cards and writing paper.

Quebec, high on the cliffs, was reached by ferrying across the St. Lawrence. No other town we visited can be compared with Quebec, more French than Paris, as ninety percent of the people speak French, and only one English newspaper is published there. Among other things we saw the old citedal, the Plains of Abraham, and Parliament Building. All through the

THE PHOENIX province were found the wayside shrines, the tiny farms, twowheeled carts, and dog carts. No public schools beyond the second or third grade exist in Quebec, as it is thoroughly Catholic and only parochial schools or private schools are found.

How the people do cling to the language and customs of their ancestors.

Montreal, Toronto, and Niagara Falls were the chief cities visited in Ontario. At Toronto we were fortunate enough to be able to visit the National Exhibition that is held there annually. We were thrilled by the wonders of Niagara Falls, both by day and by night, when it is illuminated by colored lights.

We traveled in Canada along the St. Lawrence until we reached Windsor, where we ferried across to Detroit. Here we paid a visit to the Ford factory.

The next important stop was in Chicago, where we spent three days visiting the Field Museum, Art Institute, the parks, Loop District, etc. The remainder of the journey was through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas via Council Bluffs, Omaha, and Lincoln.

We saw so many famous churches and cathedrals, churchyards, tombs of famous men in history and literature, homes of authors, etc., I certainly did enjoy the summer and I expect to keep on enjoying it the rest of my life. I hope to see many of the places again next summer when I return to Columbia.

REMINISCENCES Yes, vacations are a thing of the past for another year, and I suppose we wil~ either be reminiscing during the winter months, or anticipating another.

My vacation was very varied. The first six weeks I spent at Ohio State University, doing graduate work in History.

And work- I never worked so hard in my life, and on top of all that, it was beastly hot-not at all conducive to studyincr Congressional records. But you see we school teachers hav~ to study occasionally to prevent one of you many graduates from taking our jobs from us!

After a couple weeks at my own home, my mother and I

spent two weeks in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington.

I wanted to see some of those historic places that I teach about so much. Traveling is surely a wonderful first hand experience for teachers. I learned more last vacation on my tour of Alaska than I did one year in college. Maybe some day teacher's salaries will be raised so that I can do more of it!

A WESTERN TRIP The thirteenth day of a month is not always an unlucky day. For me it was the luckiest of lucky days. I was the happiest girl on earth. A trip to California was the cause of my elation and a whiff of orange blossom enclosed in the invitation was the factor that decided for me.

I inhabited an unreal world during the next two weeks.

At last we were on our way (my Auntie and I), across the plains of Kansas into Colorado. Soon I had my first glimpse of snowcapped peaks. How majestic they looked in the distance. During a week's stay on a ranch I learned to love the rugged mountains, the freshness of the spruces and the quaking of the whispering aspens.

One day we drove to the top of Black Mesa and I never hope to see anything more beautiful than the wild flowers that grew there. The colors ranged from bright red to pale delicate pink, with all shades of blues, purples, and yellows and the columbine were even prettier than I expected. We used all the adjectives we could think of to describe these flowers, and could say nothing more but oh's and ah's. We were real tenderfoots when it came to cow-punching, horseback riding and angling for trout, but we tried them all. 路 There was a noticeable contrast between the loneliness of the ranch and noisy San Francisco. How damp and cold it was there even in June. Our biggest thrill here was Chinatown at night. This is said to be the only real Chinatown in the United States.

My first real boat ride on an ocean liner was from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The ocean was unusually rough, and, of course, this made it even more thrilling to us. If you've never

THE PHOENIX tried dancing on a boat when the sea is rough you cannot realize how much fun it is, you really can't dance but just slide from one side of the boat to the other, swaying not to music but to the motion of the boat.

We spent six weeks in Southern California. Most of the time was spent bathing in the ocean, and oh, how invigorating it was! One week-end we drove down to Old Mexico and got a glimpse of the "Mexicanoes."

We planned various stops in N~w Mexico and Arizona, but it was so hot and dry that we were anxious to get back to Missouri, for after all there's no place like home.

A HONEYMOON SPECIAL After aU, it is an "experience"-this thing of getting lllarried, and of driving some fifteen hundred miles from North Carolina to "home" in Missouri, by way of Washington, D. C., and intermediate points.

The wedding took place July second, in Concord, North Carolina, and we left there immediately after the ceremony, with plans that we would spend a few days in Washington, and that the rest of our time could be devoted to wandering to the place where each particular day called us.

Before Washington, we stopped at Endless Caverns in northern Virginia. There we followed a guide through the cool depths of the cave and saw the beauties 1 natural and a,rtificial, of that very interesting underground spectacle.

We had meant to be in Washington for the firewor~s on the evening of the Fourth, but we arrived just as the displ;ty was finished, and we were caught in one of the worst traffic jams, as the largest crowd that ever visited Washington on the Fourth of July lett the place where the celebration was held. We didn't like Washington. It was overrun with tc;mrists and that specie of the human family doesn't contribute greatly to a happy honeymoon. A day and a half was enough, and we left the Capital without having seen all of the interesting sights it offers.

Maybe we'll go back some day.

THE PHOENIX mountains and through the plains, heading west and traveling leisurely. We liked the mountains, but after they were behind us, we traveled longer hours and drove faster, wanting to be home. St. Louis claimed us for a couple of days, as we made a round of theatres in a city that was more familiar than the others of our trip.

From there we arrived home two days later. And that's our travel "experience" of the past summer. As a "tour" it wasn't so much, but as a honeymoon it was a peach-and that's quite another matter.

DREAM JOURNEY

One o'clock in the morning of June 15, 1929, was perhaps the most gala one o'clock in my life-for I was sailing on the White Star Liner Homeric, the third largest boat in the world, for that long dreamed of country far across the sea-Europeand all that it holds of fascination for those of us who have lived always in these good old states.

The trip across was most amusing and altogether pleasant.

We landed early at Cherbourg and took the little "foreign made" train, which is made up of compartments all along one side of the coach with a small aisle on the other, for Paris, the city that made the deepest impression in my memory of all those which I visited. Paris has so much-opera, art, cathedrals, shops! Notre Dame there is to me the most beautiful of the cathedrals which we saw.

Paris frock shops are one of the interesting things about Paris. One cannot help but be delighted with the petite seamstress who makes the frocks you select. She perhaps typifies the French as you like to remember them-lovely dark hair and eyes, beautiful clothes, vivid coloring, and all vivacious!

From Paris we journeyed to Marseilles through the chateau country of France-it is truly a fairyland with its lovely old castles, a storybook come to life. As we went south our route took us through beautifully productive country, vineyards and the grassy green terraced hillsides, then into the silk country.

Acres upon acres of mulberry bushes with their delicately tender dark green leaves alternated with the lighter green of the

THE PHOENIX olive groves makes a contrast most striking. We stayed at Marseilles over night and went on to Nice the next morning.

Nice is exactly what one would expect it to be, a lovely winter resort not unlike our own California and Florida resorts -lots of sunshine and big hotels. It is holiday land.

From Nice we took the upper Cornish drive to Monte Carlo.

This is the French Riviera. One must use every power of the imagination to picture the loveliest of blue seas and skies, deep and bright. It seems that there is no division; one cannot tell where the sea ends and the sky begins. Of course, we went to the Casino for a glimpse of this sport called gambling.

On the way to Genoa we had to go through the Italian customs at Ventamilla. How warm it was with the Mediterranean stretching out before us. Water hath its charm to soothe and cool. Off come the shoes and stockings and we were wading in the Mediterranean !

Enroute to Rome our most exciting adventure was the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I was truly disappointed in its height; it had always assumed Jack and the Beanstalk proportions for me, and in reality it was perhaps only seven stories high. It is very beautiful.

Our first glimpse of Rome was under the loveliest of circumstances. It was about eleven o'clock on the balmiest evening imaginable, and the light shining on St. Peter's dome fairly radiated welcome. Rome held a big surprise for me-it is thoroughly modern and the buildings are almost spotless. I loved the Vatican and Coliseum, which contain countless treasures and St. Peters is lovely with its old mosaics. Rome has s,ooo churches and they are treasure chests.

On to Naples with its interesting factories for the making of coral, beads, amber, tortoise, and come-down-to-earth spaghetti.

Then on to Pompeii and Vesuvius. Was I dreaming or was I really seeing all of these lovely, long-heard-of places?

Our route took us to Amalfi and to Sorrento. The lovely cerise bougainvilla trailed all over the walls of our hotel and made it one grand riot of color. There is a stairway cut in the rock leading from the tropical gardens to the bay, which the bathers use.

Our next stop was the Isle of Capri, situated high up on a huge rock. It is too picturesque with its lovely buildings of

the whitest stucco. We had luncheon in one of the gardens there, a picture garden with fig, lemon, and other tropical fruit trees. We reluctantly left Capri and returned to Naples.

Then to Florence, the noisiest city in the world-narrow streets with wooden wheeled carts, bicycles and everyone with a horn or whistle.

Venice! The city of romance; it was lovely-! did not even object to the dirty canals by hard, tell-the-truth daylight. Our evenings there were "Venetianally" moonlit and musical. Its glass, lace, and shawl factories are most intriguing.

On up into Switzerland with its superb peaks. At Montreau is the castle of Chillon- we were ever so thrilled with the knight's rooms, torture rooms, and the dungeons- fairy tales in person.

In Germany we visited Heidelberg and its unique student prison. Here the culprits have written their names on the walls and have whiled away the hours sketching pictures.

Holland! So picturesque and colorful- the people have kept their native costumes and native habits.

Then up through England and Scotland with its quaint, thatched roofs and its historical haunts.

We bid farewell to our storybook vacationland at Glasgow.

Now that I am beginning to come down out of the rosy colored clouds to terra firma again, and if one must regard European cities as real and not play cities, the impressive thing about them is that each city has its own individuality and that their people have more leisure time than we have.

And now my day dreaming turns to new ports of call!

VACATION It was on June twenty-fourth that I entered upon what I thought was going to be a position-but it turned out to be a job-and what a job! For the first month everything was just fine, because all I did was observe the duties of the Dietitian and feed the hospital kittens. Illusion carried me away during that month, for the real thing was yet to come, and it did.

On August first, the kittens of the Westmoreland Hospital and the starving inmates, were transferred to me, for the dieti-

tian was going on her V;:j.Cation- a month of it! Menus to make for thirty-one days! Special diets to plan! Ordering to be done! Employees to be hired and fired!

From that day on I began getting up at five o'clock, for 路 I commuted, to either make the five-fifty-two, or help chase it out of the station-usually the latter. I arrived in Greensburg, the "[:lilly City" where the ho~pital was located, at six-eight. I had my ups and down fro!TI then on, because the hospital was situated direcdy on top of an immense hill, and since the taxi drivers absolutely refuse to t;1ke buttons for money, I had to walk that hill daily-twice daily, in fact.

For one week the wheels of the kitchen machinery ran very smoothly. At the end of that week of bliss two of the cooks left, presumably to visit their mothers, who were ill, but that excuse was just a graceful way of quitting. Therefore I acted as a substitute cook for a day until I hired another une-'-we were yet short one cook. Soon that vacancy was filled, and 路 once more the wheels were purring.

But that purring was soon to cease, just as it did in one of our kittens when the storage-room door closed on it and injured the poor little animal's back. There were many red-letter days -days when all of our diabetic patients had their diets changed at once; when several JTien patients insisted on having cantaloupe for every meal and also creamed chicken; when, after ordering two pounds of that expensive organ, liver, the anemic patient was dismissed from the hospital. Oh! yes, those were the good old days when I wondered whether I really wanted to be a dietitian or not. But, I do, and am waiting impatiently for next summer to continue the hospital training.

CANADA Last summer my family and I spent a couple of weeks in Canada. It was not the first time, but we went through new country, that is, new to us, for Quebec and Ontario have kmg been settled. 路 We left home early in the morning and were in Watertown for lunch. I tried to reach Kay, but couldn't. We drove on to Clayton, where we took the ferry for Gananoque. The ride

through the Thousand Island was beautiful. You often read the wonderful descriptions of them in pamphlets, and on that particular day they surely filled every detail and more. We looked around Gananoque a bit, but it was ordinary-no oddness. there-so we drove on to the hotel at Chaffeys' Locks.

The country there can hardly be described, but there are some very interesting points about it. There are over two hundred lakes within a comparatively small area. You can pass through almost half of them without a portage. During the War of 1812 the British found it necessary to have an inland waterway in the Ridean district, so a series of locks were built.

These locks, as well as great retaining walls, blockades, and forts are very interesting to investigate. It is quite a sight to see an old barge going through the locks (for in spite of their age they are still in constant use), an express train crossing a high trestle bridge, and an airplane peacefully hovering above.

One day we drove up to Ottawa. Oh, that is a beautiful city-and a quaint one. We had lunch at the Chateau Laurier and truly I have never before seen such a wonderful hotel.

(You could use all the superlatives you warited to, and still not do it justice. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have an Alpha Sig convention there sometime?) One of the dining rooms looks like a banquet hall in an old chateau. One can easily see why the Frenchwomen had to be so beautiful and fascinating. Their surroundings were so cold and dignified.

To be more modern, the food was excellent and the service perfect.

After lurich we drove through the residential section. The homes are beautiful and the drive along the canal is a fine setting for them. Rideau Haq, the Governor-General's home, is well worth seeing. The Parliament Buildings were the next point of interest. They, too, ate very impressive. It seems as though the whole city is built just to impress and awe one with the dignity and grandeur of it all. The most noticeable thing about the Parliament Buildings is the great amount of war propaganda. The paintings, pictures, carvings, wall panels, and tablets are filled with the subject. There was a great fire in 1916, and all the buildings with the exception of the library were burned. They were rebuilt during the greatest frenzy

THE PHOENIX of the war and I suppose that is why there is so much of the one thing. I think they will soon be changed for more peaceful decorations.

Next we crossed the river and drove through Hull. Often I have heard people say that almost everything in the province of Quebec is French, but I never really believed them. It is true, though. The stores and offices are named in French, the advertisements are written in French, the streets are so named, and even the titles of moving pictures are in French. We children had a great deal of fun telling Daddy, "Ne restez pas ici," or "Arrestez." We all had a great argument as to whether one place was a plumbing or a cheese store. When we drove back to see, howevyr, we couldn't find the street, so we never did find out. The fa~t that there were few tourists there added much to our enjoyment.

When we reached the hotel again, the hundred and some year old locks seemed modern, indeed. - Let me tell you just one story. Chaffey's is noted for its fishing. This is about our old guide (though decide for yourself whether it is a fish story or not). We were talking about Toronto when Mr. White asked us if it was as big as "Ottyway". We guessed the population to be about seven hundred thousand people. That didn't register, so we told him about ten or twelve times as large as Ottawa. Then, "Well, I don't think Toronty could be that big. Oshyway is the nearest I ever got to it and Ottyway is the biggest city I have ever seen. Oh, no, it couldn't be even half as big as Ottyway."

OBSERVATIONS This summer I undertook my first experience in being one of the great class of workers. I received a position in a physician's office for two weeks while the regular nurse and office girl was on her vacation.

My duties consisted of keeping the rooms and files in order, answering the telephone and shooing those bothersome disturbers of the peace, agents, out of the office.

I had never had the chance to study people from such an

angle, so I found the work very interesting. I wanted to observe their reaction towards physical suffering. All of the subjects were, of course, worried and showed it plainly in their talk and actions. The smaller children were only afraid that "Doctor" would hurt them, and the working man thought of illness as a "vacation" and counted the days impatiently until he would be back on the job.

One patient who amused me greatly was a middle-aged Jewish lady whose attitude was extremely pessimistic. She came in one day for a dressing and conversed with me at great length. I sympathized with her, and shortly she was swaying back and forth in her chair wailing, "Oi, oi, oi! My God ! My God!" Her belief was in fate. No matter where one was, either on the front porch or in an automobile, if it was decided upon that one should be injured or killed, it would be carried out.

Another patient, who took the opposite side, was an elderly woman, inflicted with cancer. She was extremely sad and seemed to feel that she had had her day and that her usefulness in this world was over.

The last day of my position was culminated with a little Dunkard lady. Her kindly words and thoughtful ways I shall always remember. She had come a long distance to keep her appointment with the doctor, but did not forget kindnesses which had been given her several months preceding in a hospital. She had carried a huge package with her, and at the office addressed it thus: Some flowers to the Dear Girls who were so 路kind to me during my long illness.

IMPRESSIONS OF SIOUX INDIANS Frances Ash is living in Faith, South Dakota. She writes as follows: "We are located just off of the Cheyenne Indian Reservation here in South Dakota. I come into contact with the Sioux every day. Their language interests me and I have managed to pick

THE PHOENIX up a few words and facts about their native tongue, and also some of the Indian customs. I have learned why there is no Sioux Literature; no formal grammar; why their names seem so queer; why they have names like Stinking Bear, Chasing Hawk, Charlie Knife, William Puts-on-his-Shoes, Charlie Little Crow, etc. They say that when an Indian baby is born, the father starts out and the first thing he sees he names his child.

Thus the strange names of families began. It's all very thrilling.

"I have studied the Sioux to a slight degree, and have found their philosophy of life both sad and admirable. They are very docile and subdued. They realize they are mastered and present a direct contrast to the negro. Even the "breeds" remember they are doomed. The attitude toward the white man is one of resignation and hopelessness; they have no ambitions, are dirty and lazy; they exist merely because it seems to be the law of nature. Their attitude toward members of their own tribe is different. They seem never to criticize each other; never offer any condemnation for misconduct. If one becomes angry, ' another doesn't blame or uphold him. I could write a volume, I think, on my impressions of the Sioux, but my opinions would doubtless be unscientific, and founded not on facts, but on mere fancy."

THE LOS ANGELES CITY ASSOCIATION VACATIONS Vacation is over-over in reality, but we will think many times of those happy days. California, the land of sunshine, has afforded much of this happiness. I will endeavor to give you some of its vividness first hand: Ruby Bellmard, 33, has been going to commercial college all summer, learning shorthand, typing, and all those things necessary to become a good stenographer. She says: "It has been very interesting work, however, and I enjoyed every minute of it."

Mrs. Benjamin Berger (Ermine Smith), AB, with her husband went on a fishing trip to the Mammouth Lakes in the high Sierras. From there they journeyed over to Tioga Pass, to Yosemite. They spent two weeks in the mountains.

Mrs. Clinton A. Berry (Marie Brunsman), AB, and her husband spent five weeks in Detroit and points east. They enjoyed motor trips to Niagara Falls and into Canada.

Mrs. Sidney Bone (Inez Pierce), AB, visited Green City, Missouri, and Fort Madison, Iowa, a month this summer. In spite of the rain and heat every minute was enjoyed. On her return trip she was forced to detour over other roads on account of washed-out bridges. Mr. and Mrs. Bone stayed two days over Labor Day at the Grand Canyon. Mrs. Bone is teaching music in the Glendale Public Schools again this year.

Lillian Bradley, ZZ, a newcomer to California, spent the summer with her sister in Los Angeles. She will teach in the public schools in Fillmore this year.

Mrs. Cecil Carle (Vesta Gross), ~~' her husband and little daughter spent a week at Catalina Islands. At present Mr. Carle is in the east.

Lillian Criswell spent six weeks at the University of Southern California. She writes: "Mary Davis and I met occasionally at lunch time and the first day of registration lrmin Berger appeared. She had pust returned from a camping trip and wore a splendid coat of tan. The week after summer school closed I went with a group of six to the mountains to recuperate. While at Camp High Sierra we took a very interesting horseback trip back into the mountains, going fourteen miles over a high pass, n,soo feet in altitude."

Nell Grant, ~~' writes: "The day school closed, father, mother and I left for a nine days' trip north. We went to Yosemite Valley, Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, San Francisco, and returned home via the Coast Highway, stopping at Santa Barbara. The following six weeks I taught a sixth grade class four hours in the morning at Rosemont Vacation School. The last week of vacation school we had company arrive from Illinois, so the following three weeks I spent entertaining my cousin and sister-in-law. We took trips of interest around Los Angeles, Fresno, Pacheeco Pass to the coast, where we visited Carmel, Monterey and Del Monte, Santa Barbara, and returned home over the new Roosevelt Highway, which skirts the Pacific for many miles."

Mr. and Mrs. Martin E. Jarvis (Lois Koontz), ~~' took a trip back to Kansas this summer and enjoyed seeing many old friends. Their trip took them through Feather River Canyon and Royal Gorge. Lois says: "For many miles we wound and crept along. In Wichita there was a reunion of Epsilon Epsilon girls from southern Kansas including Ruth Wilson Nation, Rosedel Ogden Belt, Gladys Sitton Carr, the Gardner girls, Frieda Cuthbertson, Marguerite Clark, Murrell Peter Lawson, and Beryl Fisher. In Emporia fourteen of the City Association members got together for luncheon. Miss Strouse was there for the summer school as was Edna McCullough and Elizabeth Smith."

Mrs. W. Clay Morstad (Georgia Ruth Farnsworth), ~~' spent her vacation at home in the role of housewife. Parties, dinners, horseback riding, swimming and special work at an art studio, made an ideal summer. She is resuming her work as teacher of art and the sixth grade at La Canada.

Mattie Van Heukelom, 33, says her vacation has been business before pleasure, but from her enthusiastic note she has enjoyed it. "On June twenty-first I became associated with a company founded for the purpose of developing and perfecting new patented ideas. We have been very busy laying the foundation for our business and we are very happy with its success so far."

Fern White, BB, spent the month of July in Los Angeles doing cashier work. Then one week was spent visiting her sister, Mrs. J. H. Higgenbotham, and five weeks at home in Delta, Colorado.

JENNY DARLING CLARK For the first time a cloud of sorrow has cast its heavy shadow on our happy Mu Mu group. Jenny Darling Clark passed away at Beyer Memorial Hospital, Ypsilanti, Sunday morning, April twenty-eight. The funeral was held at the home of her parents on Maple street, Tuesday, April thirty. Jenny was born at Maybee, but lived most of her life in Ypsilanti. After receiving her degree there she studied in France and on returning taught two years in the college and at South Bend, Indiana, before she was married to Gerald Clark, of Ypsilanti. Jenny was one of the Z T A girls who were Mu Mu's charter members, and when Miss Alpermann's health did not permit her to carry the responsibilities of that first year in A. S. A., Jenny became our advisor and graced our meetings and social affairs with that sweetness and charm for which she was so well known and loved.

Jenny's father lived only a month after her death, leaving as her survivors only her mother and husband and a tiny daughter, Joyce Arlene, born April second.

JO WILMA JAQUA Jo Wilma Jaqua, a member of Zeta Zeta Chapter since March, 1928, died May second at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Jo Wilma has suffered from anemia for the past six months and during that time Virginia Golay, one of her lifelong friends and a sister in Alpha Sigma Alpha, gave her blood for several transfusions. Her going is a great loss to Zeta Zeta Chapter and she will long be held in loving remembrance.

ALPHA ALPHA CHAPTER On Monday, June tenth, Genevieve White and Erma Schmidt received their degrees in Course Bachelor of Science.

Eleven others including Margaret Doebele, Ruth Hirzel, Ruth Hoffman, Wilma Fistner, Lucille Kline, Mary Ruth, Dortha Wente, Helen Stewart, Dorothy Williams, Nellie Lash, and Charlotte Knost, received two-year diplomas in the School of Education.

The Commencement program began with a procession of the graduating class over the campus. What a feeling to walk over the old familiar paths, in cap and gown, with the knowledge that one is about to receive her diploma or degree, and then perhaps leave the Alma Mater forever, or at least as an alumna, and not as a coed to return to take up pleasures and duties anew.

As the procession came near Beuton Auditorium, it separated and those in the rear came first. The Commencement address was delivered by Albert Shaw, Ph.D., LL.D., Litt.D., Editor of the American Review of Reviews. This address was followed by the conferring of degrees, and presentmg of diplomas. Next the senior class was inducted into the Alumni Association.

Classes began this year on September the nineteenth. One thousand and twenty-five Freshmen invaded the campus at the beginning of Freshmen week, Monday, September sixteenth.

This enrollment being the largest in the history of Miami, exceeds last year's number by two hundred and twenty-one.

Governor Cooper spoke at the opening assembly as the result of a promise he made here last year before his election. He promised that if Miami Students. put him in office, he would return at the beginning of this year and open the Chapel season with a talk. Governor Cooper proved himself a man of his word.

The Alpha Sigs who returned this year are: Virginia Updegrove, President; Louise Palmer, newly elected Vice President; Helen Neff, Martha Smelker, Ruth Hershey, Annabelle McFarlin, Mary Hamlin, Dorothy Stuart, Elizabeth Cline, Ruth Zoellner, Evelyn Weaver, Evelyn Stanforth, Betty Brodder, an Alpha Sig transferred from Indianapolis Teachers' College; and Devona Stroup.

Rushing plans this year were very similar to those of last year. Rushing started on Saturday the twenty-first and ended Saturday the twenty-eighth at ten o'clock. During this period there was no rushing on Sunday, the twenty-second and on Wednesday the twenty-fifth. It was decided at Panhellenic meeting that since the two above mentioned dates were to be the occasion of a Freshmen Tea ancf a Panhellenic Tea, there would be no rushing then.

Each sorority was allowed three party dates for rushees and ordinary rushing from four o'clock until six o'clock each afternoon. The Alpha Sigs had a hay ride, a cob-web party, and the customary banquet. Due to the small number of active members in school this year, several of the alumni members, who found it convenient, came over week-ends to help rush.

Mrs. White, a former Alpha Sig, furnished her home for the cob-web party. The favors for both this party and the banquet were made this summer. Dorothy Stuart was rush captain and of course as usual the letters were written and prospective rushee names collected during the summer.

One thousand and twenty-five Freshmen arrived Freshmen week. The number of students who had paid their registration fees reached nineteen hundred and fifty-eight at five o'clock, Friday. The number at the same time last year was well under eighteen hundred. There were ten hundred and eighty of last year's students registered last spring for this year's work. There are one hundred and thirty-six students placed on the Liberal Arts honor roll. Forty-nine of them made the honor roll for excellent work.

There are forty-two new professors on the faculty this year.

Almost every department and school had new members appear.

Governor Cooper has put his signature on the bills giving Miami University a new gymnasium, and a new Chemistry building.

Beginning this fall Miami University opened its new school of Fine Arts, which makes the fourth college within the University. The new school is divided into three departments: the Department of Music, the Department of Art, and the Department of Architecture. Miami also added to her list of new buildings the name Oxford College Hall. Although the latter building was not complete at the beginning of this year, students were assigned rooms in its shelter. Miami's plan this year was to do away with having students stay in cottages but this plan fell through due to the great increase in number of students. There are still quite a few students living in private homes.

There is a new "spinal curve" walk (cement) east of Main.

The athletic field has also undergone improvements.

Last year, student attendance at Chapel was entirely voluntary. This year each student is required to attend Chapel twice a month.

Ruth Hoffman is teaching in Middletown, Ohio.

Wilma Fistner is teaching in Springfield, Ohio.

Peggy Doeble is teaching in West Carrollton, Ohio.

Luciie Kline is teaching in Bucyrus, Ohio.

Erma Schmidt is teaching in Mariemont, Ohio.

Genevieve White is teaching near Dayton, Ohio.

Gladys Carpenter, one of last year's new Alpha Sigs, did not return to Miami University this year. She is attending school in Syracus: University, Syracuse, New York.

Virginia Updegrove, Ruth Hoffman and Dorothy Wente atte~ded summer school this summer.

Eli zabeth Betts, Fremont, one of last year's pledges was declared this summer to be fatally ill with tuberculosis. Last year she was not able to finish the second semester's work because of the condition of her health. She had hoped to return to school this year.

Helen Stover, Youngstown, is also still confined to the home of her parents. She suffered a relapse this summer but is recovering now .

ALPHA BETA CHAPTER Alpha Beta of Alpha Sigma Alpha opened its fall rush season with a "hobo" party. The girls met at the home of Amelia Brown, where food tied in red bandana handkerchiefs and fastened on a stick, was given to each girl. They then pursued a "hobo" path through back yards and alleys to Brashear Park, where they untied their handkerchiefs and enjoyed a repast quite beyond the usual fare of a hobo. Later in the evening everyone went to the home of Catherine Burk, where games and dancing were enjoyed until eleven o'clock.

The other function of the season took place when the Alpha Betas entertained their rushees with a dinner at the Travelers Hotel. The favors were small silver paper knives decorated with the sorority crest.

Marian Penick, Emma Self, Mildred Griffith, Mildred Davis, Margaret Johnson and Wanda Murdock returned to school for the summer quarter. They taught during the winter.

A panhellenic dance was held in Kirk At!ditorium near the close of the summer quarter. The faculty members were invited guests. Music was furnished by "Red" Jones' orchestra.

Here we are, all back from a wonderful summer vacation and settled down to work in Indiana. Vacation looked pretty tempting last May-but oh! isn't it great to be back among your friends again ?

We had a lovely time at a tea, on September 21, which Mary Emerson and Julia Smith gave for us in their rooms, and Betty Luke (nee Clawson) was with us. We all joined in wishing Betty happiness in her married life. It surely was like old times to have her at the first social function of the year.

Our fall rush party.took place in the form of a bridge party at the Yellow Lantern Tea Room. We entertained five lovely girls and enjoyed the evening with them immensely.

As Miss Belden's birthday was near, we gave her a bouquet of roses and had a birthday cake in honor of such an oc;casion.

Miss Ruth Tilton entertained the Alpha Sigs at a tea in her apartment on October 5th. Ruth lives in Illinois, you know, so she gave us a treat by serving cider which she had bought on her way to school.

Every Alpha Sigma Alpha girl in Indiana is on her toes these days. We are discussing the possibility of a Thanksgiving dance. Imagine the fun! But we will write more about that later.

We miss three girls this semester whom we were expecting back.

Miss Mildred Ohmit, who would be a junior in the Home Economics course this year, has taken up the same course at Ohio University. Miss Betty Lynch has decided to study music privately at home. She was enrolled in the Music course here last year. Miss Mildred Laird is attending Syracuse University this year. Mildred was a Home Economics student in Indiana.

Miss Violet Ralston is student teaching in Johnstown this semester and Miss Eleanor Smedley is teaching in Punxsutawney.

Miss Anna Shafer attended theY. W. C. A . conference at Eaglesmere this summer. We are sorry to tell that "Andy" is suffering from severe attacks of gall stones and inflamed appendix, and is unable to attend school.

Miss Ethel A. Belden toured the Northeastern section of the country this summer in her recently purchased Chevy. She visited in Philadelphia, N ew York City and toured the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains.

Alpha Sigma Alpha girls extend their sympathy to Miss Julia Mentier upon the death of her grandfather, September thirtieth.

BETA BETA CHAPTER We are especially proud of one of our new initiates as she was given the "lead" in the annual spring drama club play.

Laverne Shockley was 路the honored one and we all know now of her dramatic ability.

With school coming to a close, installation of officers was held on May thirteenth, with the following duly 路installed: Mayme Harned, president; Virt5inia Howell, vice-president; Lillian Snydal, corresponding secretary; Katherine Schlosser, recording secretary; Elizabeth Foote, treasurer; Jean Nicholson, chaplain; Laverne Shockley, registrar; Jeannette Ferguson, editor; Gertrude Strickland, historian; Jeanette M0ore, sergeant at arms.

Having lived in our present house for five years we decided that a change would be desirable; consequently we have secured a new location in a lovely house three blocks from the campus. It has towering white pillars, spacious bedrooms, and 路 all in all is a mighty nice place.

And now for the final social event of the year. Friday night after the finals were all over (everything but the "Shoutin' ") we had a formal dinner at the Camfield Hotel as our adios party. Every member of the active Chapter and some alumnce were there. Huge baskets of bridal wreath adorned the tables.

The dinner was most excellent but I, for one, could not help having a forlorn feeling when the thought came to me that I would have to say "good bye" to some of my dear sorority sisters, as they were soon to depart for various sections of the country, some to teach school, others to take the solemn vow, while the rest were having a hard time making up their weary minds as to just what they would do next. However, the dinner drew to a close with every girl feeling happy with the thought of the many good times they had enjoyed together, and with joyful anticipation of the bigger and better year to follow.

GAMMA GAMMA CHAPTER Commencement this year was one series of events. It really began early in April when the various music departments had recitals and graduating exercises. The Voice, the Piano, and

THE PHOENIX Orchestra divisions held separate recitals. Then of course the elementary Training department gave its usual Canta~a, a most lovely affair it was too.

Perhaps the most pretentious of all the Training School events was the May fete given by the Junior High School Department. The weather was delightful so that the lovely campus setting added charm as well as beauty.

Our Edna Donley had an important part in the Senior play, "Trelawney of the Wells."

Marie Landers returned for the last events and of course was here to take part in the academic procession on Commencement Day. .

Elizabeth Green and Margaret Wall ace were hostesses for the farewell party to the chapter on May fourteenth-the night before the Commencement exercises. It was an "All-the-YearRound" affair. Every holiday in the year was represented at some one of the quartet tables. The guests progressed from holiday to holiday in order of time. Much fun was experienced as the year rolled round .

Gamma Gamma like all other sororities on the campus at Northwestern Teachers' College was not active during the summer session. A year ago it was agreed that there would be no sorority activities unless purely social while the summer ~chool was in session. Gamma Gamma met several times in an informal way just for the meeting and greeting of the gids who had returned for the summer.

A picnic at Hatfield's Park was the first .and a very enjoyable occasion it was. Then a conversatione in the sorority room was unique and decidedly a pleasant affair. The rehearsals for the operetta, "Bells of Capistrano" by the Panhellenic was daily opportunity for sorority exchange of cordialities. Gamma Gamma did its part fully in furnishing the talent for this most beautiful musical affair. Financially it was a success and gave a nice sum for the Panhellenic Loan Fund. Eleanor Houts was one of the soloists.

Our last affair was a dinner in the sorority room and a line party to the Chautauqua to see the play "Skidding." This gave us a chance to be together for the last time. When September comes there will be a great scattering of the Gamma

Gamma girls of 1928-29. But the ties that bound will not be severed. The year has been most delightful and very profitable.

We are welcoming to our campus this year eight new faculty members. We are always glad to have new teachers as we are sure that we will gain new inspirations and new thoughts from them. Among those who have come to us are Miss Icie F. Johnson, from the University of Missouri. She will have English and Journalism. Mrs. Stella Rackley comes as assistant professor of Home Economics and is from Cherokee, Oklahoma. Mr. Rush, professor of public speaking and debate, comes to us from the University of Michigan. Mr. Shiner takes the position as supervisory principal of the Senior high school. He comes to us from the State Teachers' College at Durant, Oklahoma. Mr. Brown is at the head of the commercial department. He received his B.S. degree at the State Teachers' College at Durant and is A.M. from the University of Oklahoma, 1928. Miss Hough, whose home is in Newton, Iowa, is the assistant head of modern languages. Mr. 路 Freeman is taking Prof. Hall's place as assistant professor of mathematics. Miss Bilby is the assistant supervisor of junior high school and is an Alva girl. The students are glad to have the privilege of having these new teachers and we surely wel. come you toN. S. T. C. The old system of heating the college buildings is being replaced by a new gas system. With this change, new fans, pumps and radiators, we are assured that a sufficient amount of heat will be supplied to meet the needs of the winter months. $4o,ooo.oo has been appropriated to meet the cost of the new system.

Alpha Sigma Alpha girls entertained Monday night with a surprise handkerchief shower for Miss Minnie Shockley. The party was held at Miss Eleanor Houts' home on Locust Street.

The home was beautifully decorated with flowers. The evening was spent playing games and at the close of the evening, Miss Shockley gave the girls a splendid talk telling them about her plans and the things they would need to accomplish in the coming year. This trip is sponsored by the Southwestern College at Winfield, Kansas. College credit is given in history and science to those who take this field trip.

Mary D'Atley remained in New York to take special work in Columbia University.

Edna Donley has been elected to the position of teacher of mathematics in the Alva High School.

Bess Hubbard will be the Principal of the West Side School in Alva this coming year. This is a worthy recognition of her work in the grades.

Sue Edwards is president of the local Auxiliary of the American Legion and very efficiently assisted in the entertaining of the district convention of the American Legion Post, July r6-r7.

Beatrice Ball is to be Athletic Director of the Y. W. C. A. in Grand Junction, Colorado, next year.

Edna Donley, Marie Landers, and Wilda Trueax received the A. B. degree from Northwestern this summer.

Nellie Azbell Cole, of Eureka, Utah, visited her old home in Cherokee, Oklahoma, this summer. While there, she came to Alva to call on Miss Shockley. She will teach in the Junior College at Salt Lake City, Utah, this coming year.

Beatrice Ball is Physical Director of the Y. W. C. A. in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Eva Ames and Mary D 'Atley took the Omnibus College tour this summer, visiting points in the East.

Louise Glaser visited Chicago and other northern cities this summer.

She is teaching in Enid again this year.

We were very sorry to hear of the sudden death of Mary Margaret Wallace's mother, and we send our heartfelt sympathy to Margaret.

EPSILON EPSILON CHAPTER We are all very happy in our new home. It is only two blocks off the campus and on one of the fine old residence streets of Emporia. The Theta Sigs live next door and the Pi Kaps just two houses away on the other side, so it is getting to be quite a sorority row.

We bought a new davenport and a big chair and a very good looking rug. Our mothers suggested furnishing the curtains for us for which we were truely thankful.

We have two large sleeping porches and every one sleeps out. Needless to say it is a great temptation to spend the wee sma' hours in conversation, so we have made a rule forbidding it-as one of the pledges put it "No loud sleeping on the talking porch."

Miss Edna McCullough our sponsor spent June and July teaching in summer school and during August attended the Iowa State University at Iowa City, Iowa. She is working on her Master's Degree.

Miss Elizabeth Smith of Atchison, who was our assistant sponsor last year left in August for New York City. She is teaching a kindergarten in a private school.

A picnic was given in honor of visiting Alpha Sigs, Helen Loveless and the editor, July II. So many of the regulars were in summer school that it was a real reunion. Delicious food and plenty of it, and a dance "The Wedding of the Painted Doll" were the chief features. .

We feel fortunate that we have many of the "old girls" back in school this year. Barbara Beverly and Ida Good both of Burlingame and Helen Loveless of Marion, were the first arrivals.

Helen Alexander of Wellington, who was in school year before last returned to finish her work. Ye editor arrived from Atchison next in order. We received the surprise of our lives when Mary Stewart, Wellington, Susan O'Connor, Winfield, and Catherine Ferguson, Ottawa, all of whom had not expected to be in school, arrived.

Of the girls who live in Emporia, Virginia Ford, Ruth Nation, Helen Stowe, Gertrude Tholan, Elizabeth DeWar, Lucille and Vivian Laughlin, Marguerite Jensen, Winifred Guffier, and Marion Mott are with us this year.

Virginia Ford was our rush captain this year and a mighty able one she turned out to be. She was efficiently assisted by Vivian Laughlin and Marian Mott. We had the usual parties and the climax was our cabaret. It is becoming an annual event as this is the fourth year for it. Our rushing rules were changed this semester to three days, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mrs. Pearl Cook of Kansas City, Missouri is our new housemother. A very-charming woman, companionable, yet sees to it that we "toe the mark," and we all adore her.

THE PHOENIX We held open house for the fraternities Saturday night, September twenty-sixth and also the following Saturday. Phi Sigma Epsilon, Sigma Mu Delta and Phi Delta Chi fraternities were our guests the first evening, while the Sigma Tau Kamma, the Kappa Sigma Epsilon fraternities were entertained the next week.

Marv Alice Bordenkircher was recently elected our assistant sponsor: She was our president last year and we enjoy having her with us again.

I can honestly say that our pledges this year are the finest we've had since the ytlar I was pledged ( ?). W~ have all types as well as many talents. Tall dignified blondes, short vivacious brunettes, and others as outstanding but more difficult to classify-violinists, pianists, honor students, and vocalists. Margaret Nicholson who was elected editor last spring is not in school this semester because of the illness of her father.

Margaret Richardson of Marion, who recei ved her Life Certificate last spring is teaching near Marion.

Doris Stewart of Wellington, is teaching in a kindergarten in her home town .

Marie Santee of.St. Mary's, our talented musician, is teaching public school music at St. Mary's.

Margaret Coss, Peabody, is touring the eastern part of the United States but expects to enroll the second semester.

Susan O'Connor, Winfield, and Mary Alice Bordenkircher, Emporia, are enrolled at K. S. T. C . and are working on their Master's Degree.

Catherirre Brower, Junction City, who received her degree in 1927, is now tfaching in the public schools of Emporia. She dines with us every evening and " peps us up."

Ellodene Thomas, Emporia, who received her degree last spring is worktng for her father for the time being.

THE PHOENIX ZETA ZETA CHAPTER The summer of 1929 has been a busy one for many of the Zeta Zeta girls.

Alice Gwinn attended summer school at Peru, Nebraska.

Harriet and Catheryn Oglesby attended the University of California. Marion Rau and Kathryn Young were most pleasantly located on the banks of Lake Michigan while attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Those attending school at Warrensburg were, Berne Heberling, Josephine Chatham, Mary Louise Hull, Dorothy Bryant, Laura Brown, Ethel Phillips, Francis Rhae Hudgins, Ruth Bailey, Margaret Kelly and Mary Greenwald.

One of the most interesting features in our summer was the annual camp at Pertle Springs. Many of the alumna: were back and with their eager assistance, we made lots of "whoopee."

Camp was held June fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth. We had rented the Stuart cottage and it was all ready to receive its twenty-five guests the evening of Friday, the fourteenth when they arirved. That evening, we had a buffet supper, followed by boating and singing. At eleven-thirty, Mrs. Nattinger had arranged for everyone to come in "formal night clothes" to the top floor of the cottage for a "Michigan" party.

We played Michigan until the wee small hours. Early Saturday morning, everyone rolled out, hard as it was, and took a dip in the lake, then back for a nice big breakfast. Saturday afternoon, the alumna: gave the activ~s a bridge party. In the evening there was a dinner party at the hotel, followed by singing and no end of fun. Sunday morning came with a swim, breakfast and then, back to town with more happy memories to add to our long list about Alpha Sigma Alpha.

This fall, school started off with a bang. Every girl came back with the intentions of hard work. Our only rush partyin the form of a Tea-dance-was given September sixteenth at the sorority house. The house was very prettily decorated with fall wild flowers and roses. We pledged Thelma Dozier of Mexico, Missouri.

Plans are being made for a rummage sale to be held October twelfth. Also, plans are being made for a bridge benefit in November.

THE PHOENIX We are very proud to boast that our college is to have the Erst football game at night, in Missouri.

The enrollment of the college this year is nearly a thousand.

On the faculty we have as a new instructor, Mr. Moreland, in the Education Department.

The Zeta Zeta girls who have returned for the coming year are-Alice Gwinn, Rachel Brenneisen, Evelyn Reid, Martha Hallar, Elizabeth Farmer, Eugenia Land, Berne Heberling, Virginia Golay, Zelpha Land, and Mary Greenwald.

Evelyn Reid of Hutchinson, Kansas, appeared upon the scene after the first week of school had passed. We flatter ourselves that she couldn't resist coming back to the Alpha Sigs one year more.

Eugenia Land spent June in California.

Mary Louise Hull has discontinued her studies at Central Missouri State Teachers College and is attending Oklahoma University.

Mattie Hull is attending Stephens College this year at Columbia, Missouri.

Eli zabeth Farmer is back with the Zeta Zeta girls after several years of teaching.

Harriet Oglesby is teaching in Wellington, Missouri.

Josephine Chatham is teaching English in Cassville, Missouri.

Fern Lawman of Smithville spent the summer in California.

Marguerite Van Meter spent 路the summer in California.

Anna Deryl Draper is attending Missouri University. She IS a member of Pi Beta Phi. Mrs. Nattinger, our faculty advisor and friend , spent August in Chicago visiting her daughter and son, Josephine and Ralph Nattinger.

ETA ETA CHAPTER K. S. T. C. celebrated its Hobo Day April eighteenth. The Alpha Sigs were there in all their splendor (if you could speak of hoboes and hoboesses in such a manner). After attending the hobo chapel, in a body, we joined in the parade. Our float was a hay rack with a clothes line as a decoration. A large poster with "Alfalfa Girls" printed on it, "distinguished us from the rest of the parade.

The day Was brought to a close by the Stunt Fest, in which all the sororities and fraternities take part. Our stunt was called "Time Passes ? ? ?," and had the characteristic of each month symbolized. Every one remarked that it was a very clever stunt. However, we did not take a prize.

THE PHOENIX Then came our spring formal at the Country Club on April twentieth. Oh, how it rained the day before! We were not pepped up at all, because most of us looked forward to nothing but a sopping wet time. However, to our astonishment and surprise, it cleared off and turned into one of those beautiful moon-light nights that we read about so often in stories. Our party was called "The Rainbow Dinner Dance" and we carried out the scheme by decorating the pavilion with the rainbow colors.

This year we originated an idea to further the democratic spirit between sororities on the campus, by inviting a representative and her guest from each sorority to our dance. The plan proved to be very successful.

We had our Mother-Patroness and senior girls' party together on Baccalaureate Sunday. The girls received white crystal necklaces as farewell gifts.

September twelfth called twelve peppy Alpha Sigs from their summer joys and pleasures back to the campus of old K. S. T. C. But, nevertheless, we were glad to say "howdy" once again to our friends and sisters.

We had our first meeting on Thursday, September fifteenth, in order to get organized. Quite a few of the old "gang" were absent, but meeting opened with Dorothy Weede, our very capable president, standing before eleven eager and enthusiastic girls: Helen Dowis, Mary Margaret Foresman, Myra Koenig, lone Jackson Moore, Gladys Grahm, Donna Burr, A vys Ray Taylor, Dorothy Lea Laney, Ruth Shriver, Ann Montgomery, and Mary Clyde Newman. The chief topic of conversation at our meeting was rushing. Due to a new rule adopted by the Inter-sorority Council, we will only be able to have three rush parties,- and we want to make them real parties! We have several charming and worthwhile girls in mind that will make fine rushing prospects.

Last Tuesday night, September twenty-fourth, Miss Roseberry, our beloved sponsor, who has been away for the past two years attending Chicago University, gave us a bean supper.

Beans may not sound very appetizing to most people, but wait until you eat some that Miss Roseberry cooks.

The past two weeks have been very busy ones on our

campus. Everyone is trying to adjust herself and get settled down to work. We hape that Eta Eta will hold an outstanding place this year in our school, both scholastically and socially.

Elizabeth Caffey has stopped school for a while to become a bookkeeper for her cousin. We hope Elizabeth will be back in school next year.

Betty Corby and Marge Carpenter- the Pleasanton "twins"- are attending universities this year. Betty is at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, while Marge is down at Norman going to the University of Oklahoma.

Dorothy Hansen is teaching in El Paso, Texas. She has quite a few little Mexicans to contend with-I've heard. Best luck to you, Dotty.

Helen Gracey, our treasurer last year, is teaching in Nortonville, Kansas.

Eva Mae Hyde, our little girl "what" gave readings, accepted a school down at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, this year.

Mary Elizabeth Montee became a school "marm" at the last minute.

She is teaching at Arcadia, Kansas.

Marie Potter was fortunate enough to get a school in her home town of La Cyne, Kansas.

Enid Frogue is teaching "do-re-mi" to Arma, Kansas, students.

Annette Vehlow is teaching commerce at Sedan, Kansas.

Ruby Bachtel wouldn't even consider this "small town stuff," so sh:: accepted a position in St. Louis, Missouri.

Helen Brandenburg, Prexy's daughter, is teaching "daily dozens" to pupils in El Dorado schools.

Rebecca Roseberry received her degree last 's pring, but she decided that she wouldn't let us get rid of her-she's back in school doing graduate work this year.

THETA THETA CHAPTER Classes started at the School of Education, Boston University, on September nineteenth, with an enrollment of nearly two hundred fifty new students, and a total enrollment of approximately four hundred. The girls returning as active members in Theta Theta Chapter, are Vivian Bean, president, Ida Mary Swan, Lois Butterfield, and Laura Smith.

No particular changes have been made in the college itself, but one important new policy went into effect last week.

(October first). A resolution passed by the School of Education Student Body last spring to the effect that School of Education girls should belong to School of Education sororities was adopted by the Panhellenic at the College of Liberal Arts,

THE PHOENIX where many of our girls had previously joined sororities. Not only is this resolution important to Alpha Sigma Alpha, as it enables us to maintain a much stronger chapter, but also to the college itself by making it a more unified whole, without divided interests.

The first rush party of the season was in the form of a tea, held at the sorority rooms on Friday afternoon, September twenty-seventh. Vivian Bean poured. There were sixteen guests present.

On Friday, October fourth, a bridge party was given for the rushees at the rooms. There were five tables. The prizes, a dainty lavendar sachet, a desk ink-well, and a tiny red elephant for luck were won by Ruth Valentine, Ruth Higgins, and Mildred Hart. The color scheme of green and gold was carried out in candy baskets of gold carrying the table number in green, green candles, and the gold frosting on the cake, served with coffee at the close of the game. Twenty rushees were present.

During the coming month we plan to give a theatre party for the pledges, a Japanese party just preceding initiation, which will be the first week in November, and numerous small group gatherings at the apartment.

Polly Kilburn has a position as critic teacher in the Oberlin Uni versity, Oberlin, Ohio.

Julia Morey has a position as critic teacher in the Normal School at Oneonta, New York.

Jeannette Johnson is teaching in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Dorothy Bixby in Groton, Massachusetts.

Mildred ( " Billy" ) Ayers is doing graduate work at the College of Liberal Arts, Boston University.

Lillian Siebeneicher became Mrs. Edwin B. Christensen at a beautiful church wedding in September.

IOTA IOTA CHAPTER Iota Iota Chapter sponsored two benefit bridge parties May second and third at the Chapter House. Ruth Mcintire and Velma Jordan were the hostesses. The parties proved very profitable giving us thirty-five dollars.

Our Spring Dance was held on May seventeenth in the Hoyt Sherman Place. It proved to be a delightful evenmg.

Our chaperones were the Dean of Women Mary Carpenter Craig, Mother McCormick and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hubbard.

We were very disappointed on the evening of May twentyseventh. A picnic was to have been held in a beautiful wood near one of our alumna's homes, in honor of the girls graduating but to our chagrin-it rained. The party was postponed and decided to be on June fourteenth but changed to a slumber party at the House. We met at the house, then piled into a Yellow Cab and spent the evening at an amusement park. We returned via the street-car to commence the much neglected slumber part of the party.

Mrs. McHenry was our guest on June third. She was our landlord and it was definitely decided that we would not take our present house but would rent a new one for the coming year.

We are very sorry to see' so many of our girls leave us this year. Those graduating are Madge Crow, Doris East, Minnie Keys, Rita Walters, Dorothy Dennis, Bernese Masker, Ruth Mcintire, Frances Arney, Helen Sailer, our newest initiate and Doris Hubbard. A one o'clock luncheon was held in honor of the Mothers and Daughters June tenth. Five of the mothers, Mrs. Crow, Mrs. Mcintire, Mrs. Fordyce, Mrs. Milligan and Mrs. Sailer were taken into the Mother Patroness Association. As it was very warm we conducted the beautiful little ceremony on our large lawn.

The girls who are returning to Iota Iota Chapter are: Dorothy Sorenson, Doris Milligan, Velma Jordan, Janet Fordyce and Alice Eck. . Alpha Sigma Alpha's rushing season opened this year with bright prospects. The Panhellenic Tea was held at the Drake Lounge on September the eighteenth. Janet Fordyce of our chapter was the presiding hostess. The Indian Luncheon was a charming affair held at the chapter house September nineteenth. The decorations were Indian, the walls being covered with Navaho rugs and the floors with horsehides. Parched corn was substituted for nuts. While the courses were served special Indian numbers on the piano were played.

A charming party at Mrs. Welpton's home carried the idea of a broadcasting from China. It was on September twentieth

THE PHOENIX and the hostess was Lillian Buckles, an alumna. She and her helpers were cleverly clad in Chinese pajamas. Ice cream was molded in adorable Buddhas.

Deutsh Ompbijt, Preferred, was held at the Bonnie Mac Tea Room with Alice Eck as hostess. Wooden shoes were given as favors and small windmills decorated the tables. The main rushing for this year came to a close in a gay mad party, Alpha Sig "Midway." It was a true carnival with balloons, confetti, side-shows, pop and hot-tamalies. Dorothy Sorenson was the hostess.

There have been various additions to the teaching staff of Drake University this year: College of Commerce, Professor W . H. Rowland, Prof. John Stockton; Miss Juliet Devin, Assistant Prof. of English; College of Law, Prof. James Stewart; Fine Arts, Effie Callender, Grace De Graff, Mrs. F. W. Cowles; Psychology, Miss Shepherd; Educataion and in Liberal Arts, Prof. Lockhart, Prof. C. B. Fraser, Prof. Lee Yoder; and Helen Gregory, Natural Dancing.

The Freshman Class of 1929-1930 totaled over four hundred. The other classes made the registration total over fifteen hundred.

There have been many improvements made on the campus during the summer. Several new sidewalks were laid and a drive way was taken out making room for some lovely flower beds.

Our Program for October and November is as follows: October-Charm, Personality and Health, Miss Holton, Physical Instructor. Hallowe'en Party, given by Actives to Pledges. Knowing the Stars, Ted Mahlon, a trip to the Observatory.

THE PHOENIX KAPPA KAPPA CHAPTER Perhaps one of the rriost delightful events of our Chapter year was our Dinner Dance given in honor of our eight new members. The Art Alliance is an ideal place for such surroundings. Following a delicious dinner, an enjoyable program was given by Geraldine Smith, Helen Shultz, Margretta Hoover and Dorothy Cardwell. The rest of the evening was pleasurably spent in dancing. Everyone present remarked that truly it was a perfect evening. Dr. and Mrs. Beury were among our guests and their presence added greatly to our enjoyment.

On Mothers' Day, Kappa Kappa gave the Mother-Patroness degree to five mothers. The Service was held at ten o'clock in the sorority rooms. Geraldine Smith sank "Dear Mother Mine" and Mrs. Wagner, mother of our alumna, Mary Wagner, gave a brief talk to the girls before we went in a body to the Baptist Temple. Several mothers who had previously taken the degree were present and it was truly a Mother's Day for our chapter.

In the afternoon a tea was given for all University students and their mothers under the auspices of the Y. W. C. A. and Y. M. C. A. Dr. Lingleback, one of the professors of history at Temple, gave us a most interesting talk on the relationship which she believes should exist between parents and their children. Then two of our own Alpha Sigs, Margaretta Hoover and Geraldine Smith played and sang. Dr. Beury gave an interesting account of how Mothers' Day began and its growth and development.

Every year Kappa Kappa is entertained at the home of our member, Mrs. Charles Beury, the wife of our University's President. This year our visit to President Beury's home was highly enjoyed by each member of our chapter. We arrived at their home in time to enjoy the lovely lawn and garden and make use of cameras and kodaks before dinner was served. A most delicious dinner was thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. Following the dinner, we went into the library where the girls gave a brief program. "Jerry" Smith read the Prophecy for the outgoing girls and many were the shouts of surprise and mirth which greeted the prophetic utterance. Anne Willauer, as spokeswoman for the Seniors read their "last will and testa-

ment" to the girls remaining in college. If we all receive the things bequeathed us in that "Will", I am sure we shall be content forevermore.

Anne presented to our Chaplain "Jerry" Smith, a white Bible as a gift from the Seniors to Kappa Kappa. We had desired one to add to the beauty of our Services and this lovely gift shall serve to remind us of those who gave it. Our program closed with several amusing readings given by Dorothy Cardwell. Then followed dancing, chatting, laughing and just a good old Alpha Sig time until the hour came for adieu.

Our last Chapter activity was our celebration of Hermes Day on May 30. I should add that although it was last, it was by no means least. At six-thirty Thursday morning we set out for the Wissahickon. Armed with pans, tin cups, rolls, bacon, eggs, oranges, coffee pot and keen appetites we arrived at a desirable spot along the Creek and there made our fire and cooked a most delectable breakfast which soon fell prey to hungry mouths. After breakfast we had a short meeting when Ye Editor gave her poetic version of Hermes' life and symbolism and songs were sung "under the greenwood tree."

Some of the girls had exams the next day which necessitated their going back to school after the meeting but others of us decided to hire some canoes and enjoy the beauties of nature.

There were three canoes hired and we paddled down to the rapids. Where our canoes were, the water was quite deep and a rocky cliff rose to a height of about fifty feet. We noticed two boys at the top who called to us and asked if we saw a book they had lost. We could not see it and cautioned them to be carefullest they fall. Scarcely had we done so when one boy came crashing down through the brush and fell into the water. He could swim but was so frightened that he made little progress. Our "Kitty" Bender waded out into the water at once and when she could no longer wade, swam to where she could get the boy and bring him to land. Before she reached him, however, the second boy lost his footing and fell heaOlong into the pool. He was unable to swim and had it not been for Jean Lenty, Mary Cockill, Peg Spry and Margaretta Hoover, he would have perhaps drowned. Jean swam out to him and the other girls went to him in a canoe and among

THE PHOENIX them managed to bring him to shore. Both boys were worked over by Kitty Bender and Mary Cockill. The second boy was badly cut and bruised, but both boys were able to go home.

The Philadelphia papers gave this rescue great publicity as it deserved because had the girls not been there and acted promptly, the two boys would have been unable to save themselves. We were glad and proud that our Alpha Sigs had once more proven their worth.

Greetings to all in A. S. A. Kappa Kappa wishes to say Now that Summer has changed to Fall, Best wishes, sister, one and all.

It seems scarcely possible that summer is past and once more college halls are filled with would-be seekers after wisdom.

The members of Kappa Kappa passed their vacations in varied manners but all agree that it was a most enjoyable summer.

Mildred Melsheimer, Helen Shultz and Mae Jacobs, three of this year's Seniors continued their educational pursuits at Temple during the summer session. As further evidence of Alpha Sigs' interest in education, Anne Slifer, Helen Witmyer and Frances Shirely enjoyed Penn State Summer School while Virginia Hoffman studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Anne Willauer at Cornell. Rah! Rah! for ye energetic alumn;:e!

Pens and cars served as the means of exchange of experiences and many happy meetings among Kappa Kappa's members during the summer and now that we are again united it scarcely seems as if we had been separated.

As we consider the splendid group we have in our college chapter this year, we feel confident in saying that surely this will be one of great moment: for Kappa Kappa and we feel equally sure that it will be one of splendid achievement for Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Cullough. We are delighted to welcome Catharine Mitchell as a member of Pi Pi, State Teachers College, Buffalo, New York. Catharine is a transfer in our Kindergarten-Primary Department and we know she is going to prove a valuable asset to Kappa Kappa.

Our academic year began September twenty-fifth, an unusually late opening. Due to this fact our plans for October and November have as yet not been made definitely and we cannot report as to their contents. Since we do not conduct rushing until the Second Semester beginning in February, our rushing plans will be formulated at a later date.

Temple University has a registration this year of over thirteen thousand students. All the various departments are prepared for a year of progressive activity. Unit Two, the second division of the great Temple of Learning is being utilized to care for the great increase in enrollment. The entire structure is of collegiate Gothic architecture and is constructed of the very finest materials. The eighth floor is occupied by the Nursery School which is complete to the smallest detail. The Industrial Arts Department occupies the twelfth floor.

These early days of the college year are, of course, days of Freshmen Regulations. Green caps and ties for the men and pins and streamers for the girls are lending a bit of Irish color to the campus. The Sophomores are in all their glory of supremacy over these Frosh and we wonder if they stay awake all night thinking up punishments for forgetful and careless beginners.

The erection of the Third Unit of the new building will be started this semester. It is proposed to make this section a_ tower of twenty-three stories which will form the central unit of the great University building. In it will be a large auditorium for Student Recreation and additional class rooms.

Temple University is expecting even greater things of her football team than last year. Coach Miller reports very favorably of the results of the training season at Atlantic City and declares that his men are ready for the heavy schedule they will meet this year. Our schedule includes Drake University and we are hoping that some of our sisters from Iota Iota will . come to Temple not only to cheer for Drake but to visit us of

Kappa Kappa. The Drake game is November twenty-third and that week-end will be our celebration of Founder's Day with a home-coming of our alumn;r. What could make it more delightful than to have some Iota Iota girls as our guests r Our University Faculty has been strengthened in various departments. Dr. Chevalier Jackson, the eminent surgeon, is filling a position as professor in the School of Medicine. The Physical Education Department has a new head in the person of Dr. Prosch from New Jersey. The School of Aviation opened September sixteenth and is being conducted under supervision of the Navy.

Our Installation Service will be held within a few days and our earnest desire for Kappa Kappa and all of Alpha Sigma Alpha Chapters is that with the beginning of a new year of activities and accomplishments we may remember toA spire to all that is splendid Let hope direct the way S eek for only the true things Love will bring you them each day.

Christine Kline utilizes her Ford in driving from Schuylkill Haven to Frackville, where she teaches Physical Education in the High School.

LAMBDA LAMBDA CHAPTER April, May, and June, how rapidly these months have passed. To you, other Alpha Sigs, I shall present briefly what we have been doing at Ohio State University. -On April the fourteenth, Alice Riley, Grace Groff, and Pearl Holkko were initiated into the honorary active degree.

The first real social activity of the spring quarter was ushered in by the pledges, who gave a house dance. The house was decorated very charmingly in black and white stenciled effect. Spring with its charm and romance induced the actives to give a spring dance in the first week of May, and they succeeded surprisingly well to transform the house into a.regular spring garden.

On Mothers' Day the A. S. A. girls gave a tea for their mothers. On leaving, each mother was presented with pink roses.

Then followed a series of rushing parties. We gave a bridge and a "bon voyage" party. Everyone agreed anyone of our guests would be a fine future Alpha Sig. May twenty-fourth was the annual May Supper of the fraternities and sororities on the campus. We went together in a group, and enjoyed our box lunches immensely. It was a pleasure to eat in a lazy manner and to encounter some of our fellow classmates and campus mates, and to slowly drowse off into a real feeling of contentment with the music of the 0. S. U. band. Afterwards we scurried off to the home of Lucille Westinghouse. The pledges gave the annual traditional party for the graduating seniors of the sorority, and the evening was spent in playing bridge and doing various stunts. On leaving the four graduating seniors, Margaret Laycock, Margaret Shelby, Sarah Kinney, and Ethel Wolfgram, were given a silver tea spoon with the A. S. A. seal, in loving remembrance and token of their esteem.

May twenty-fifth was the annual play day of the W. A. A., so we participated in the games, and also sold sandwiches. Our pledges were very pleased to know that the decorations of the booth received honorable mention. To top off the day, there was the big informal sport dance of the Alpha Sigs., at the

THE PHOENIX Elmont Inn, in a little town fourteen miles away. Everyone felt we could not have selected a more charming old-fashioned place.

Plans for our new home ran high, so we gave a benefit bridge at the new Y. W. C. A., and as the party was a great success, we have quite a sum for our new house furnishings.

The first week in June we pledged two very charming girls, Mary Bowne and Lillian Laycock, we know they will be regular Alpha Sigs.

Before closing time of this quarter the Alpha Sigs and the boy friends went to Buckeye Lake to have a picnic, everyone agreed they had a wonderful time, so for a successful new year to you and to yours.

About June fifteenth, 1929, school having closed for the summer, the various out of city Alpha Sigs were busy packing bag and baggage for home, vacation and other summer anticipations.

A lull, an undescribable quietness had settled over the Lambda Lambda chapter's activities-until the sounding of the coming new fall quarter, the awakening of the Alpha Sigs was introduced during the first part of August by the alumnae of Columbus at the chapter house. The girls held a "pot-luck" supper, and after that quite a confab was held and extensive plans were made by them for the new Lambda Lambda headquarters.

During the latter part of August, whoever passed the new A. S. A. house was able to witness energetic activity going within.

The girls who are living at the new chapter house appreciate very much the cooperativeness and work of the girls living in town, who made the chapter house an inviting home.

When visitors step into our new home, there is always a willing Alpha Sig ready to escort them through the house and laud its merits. One of the living rooms is a study in brown, another a symphony in green. Before long unconsciously or consciously the escort will say-1 must show you the darling foursome tables in our dining room.

and is very careful of our calories. Her policy is to make each dish surpass the other.

A great deal of fun is derived by the girls in going to bed at nights, they are trying to sleep dormitory style. I wish every one could have the opportunity to view the girls' study rooms -if you are looking for uniqueness and unusual originality the Lambda Lambda girls cannot be surpassed.

Rushing plans are in full swing, our first party was held October fourth. It was symbolic in two ways-the first rushing party of the season and open house night in honor of our new house. Informal dancing and talking was featured and plenty of hot chocolate, sandwiches, and little cakes.

Three more rushing parties are scheduled: "Kid party, October eighth, an informal tea, Sunday, October twelfth, and a formal dinner at one of the downtown places, the thirteenth of October.

Ohio State has an enrollment over ten thousand, this fall all attendance records are expected to be broken.

Our campus seems to be coming more beautiful than everall driveways are in the process of being paved. This factor is greatly appreciated by the students, so when it rains one will not need to paddle through muddy roads.

The oncoming new fall freshmen were highly honored with an address to them by the honorable Governor Cooper of Ohio.

This is the first time he has appeared before the campus student body.

This year the freshmen boys are forced to wear red caps.

Special courses are offered to teachers of public schools of Columbus and vicinity. These courses are useful for their work.

Seventeen departments of the university are extending their serv1ces.

The Graduate School has been granted $1o,ooo to encourage the promotion of research work during the academic year of 1929-30.

The Women's Self Government Association has made changes in house rules of co-eds. The hour of 12:45 p. m. on Friday and Saturday in returning from social engagements has been changed to one o'clock.

The Lambda Lambda members covered extensive distances this summer on the latitude and longitude of old mother earth; two of our alumni girls, Ethel Wolfgram spent a week in Wisconsin; Gwendolyn Singleton traversed about a week and marveled at the glories of Yellowstone National Park.

Kay Stofer and Corolla Fox spent twelve weeks on a lake cruise on the Great Lakes.

Mrs. Charles M. Cummings (nee Dorothy F. Porter) has returned from Spain to resume her duties in the Spanish department at Ohio State University. We look forward to a talk from her, telling of interests of romantic Spain.

All Alpha Sigs extend their heartiest welcome to Mildred Ohmit of Alpha Gamma chapter, Indiana-Pennsylvania-who has transferred to our ranks.

MU MU CHAPTER The Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority was entertained at a farewell dinner given by the patronesses and held at the home of Mrs. Fred McLane, 1000 Grant Street. Patronesses present were Mrs. Harold Barss, Mrs. Jack Shapard, Mrs. George Millage, Mrs. Guy Kennedy, and Mrs. Harry Smith. Miss Estelle Bauch, faculty adviser, was also present. Alumna present were Florence Bayler, who has just returned from Kentucky, Margaret Gotts of Detroit and Blanche Walters of Ypsilanti. F allowing the dinner, the guests and sorority members enjoyed an hour of dancing.

Mother Patroness Initiation was held on the morning of June Sixteenth at the sorority house at seven-thirty o'clock. At

this time four mothers of our Alpha Sig girls were initiated into the organization of Mother Patroness. The mothers are: Mrs. Fred Schwalm of Mt. Clemens and mother of June Schwalm, Mrs. Fred Mapes of Bronson and mother of Grace Mapes, Mrs. I. A. Hartung of Mt. Clemens and mother of Emma Hartung, Mrs. William Streit of Mt. Clemens and mother of Mattie Streit. Following initiation the mothers will be given a breakfast at the Huron Hotel, after which the girls and their mothers attended church in a body.

Hello everybody! The girls of Mu Mu Chapter are back to make this chapter the liveliest one in A. S. A. And what a peppy group of girls we have back this year! Ann Reincke, Emily Schmid, Doris Billman, Margaret Gripton, Emma Hartung, and Jane Fairbanks have returned besides Rowena Farwell, Lelia Holt, Mildred Grangers, Naomi Huston, Mattie Streit, Margaret Welch and Audrey Harvey.

We all had a lovely vacation even if most of us did work during the summer. Emily Schmid took a wonderful trip through northern Canada, returning through New York State via Niagara Falls.

This year we are going to have a marvellous new library on the campus. The building is not ready for use yet as the interior decorating has not been completed. Such a building ought to inspire us to much studying. And best of all, the Mu Mu girls have a new chapter house at 943 Sheridan Avenue. It is a lovely large stucco house, the interior of which has been completely redecorated. We certainly do like our new home.

College in Ypsilanti did not start until September twentyfourth, so we have not been back long enough to form any definite plans for rushing. But every Mu Mu girl is concentrating on some kind of a party which we can give that will be clever and original. We have our first regular chapter meeting on Monday, September thirtieth, when our rushing plans will be decided on. We are all looking forward to the parties as they form one of the brightest spots in our college year.

Florence Bayler will join the rank of teachers in Detroit as soon as the Fall session begins.

Helen Burbank has accepted a position at Bad Axe, Michigan. She is employed as a Commercial teacher there.

Margaret Leonard won't be ver.y far from the Alpha Sigs, for her work will be in Wailed Lake, as an instructor of Music and Art there.

Grace Mapes, another one of the Alpha Sigs' Music and Art students, will teach in Vicksburg at the opening of school in September.

Marjorie Rathbun has accepted a position at Charlotte, Mich. Marjorie will teach the children of the later elementary grades.

June Schwalm has accepted a position in River Rouge as teacher of a first grade there. She says she'll/ike it 'cause she won't be far from her Alpha Sig sisters that are going to be in Detroit.

Joyce Potter has recently moved from Chicago to Detroit, where she is working.

Theone Simmonds, another Detroit teacher-but for the very first time- who will join the rank of Detroit teachers with the opening of school.

Christine McMillan is teaching in St. Petersburg.

NU NU CHAPTER One of the nicest treats April had in store for us was the visit to Nu Nu Chapter of Miss Ina M. Bain, Supervisor of Activities. Miss Bain attended our regular meeting and gave us a delightful and inspiring little talk,- which we shall long remember,- our only regret is that we do not more often have the opportunity of coming into personal contact with our National Officers-so we take this opportunity of expressing our appreciation of Miss Bain's visit. 路 On April ninth, Nu Nu held a bridge party in the faculty lunch room of the school cafeteria. To all intents and purposes the party was to secure the two best bridge players for the Student Activities Bridge Contest, but in reality it was a miscellaneous shower for our president, Ruth Hasenfuss, whose engagement to Horace Hollingsworth had just been announced.

Ruth received many lovely gifts and we hope they will aid her in her new position, to be. After the excitement had subsided and scores had been counted it was discovered that Myrta Probasco and Bertha Anderson held high scores and would represent Alpha Sig in the Bridge Contest.

The annual election of officers of Nu Nu Chapter was held April twenty-third. The past has been quite a successful year, and we hope the new officers will meet with as much success as their predecessors. April twenty-sixth saw the finals of the Student Activities Bridge Tournament played off-the Phi Kappa Beta fraternity represented by Charles Maschal and Stuart Kenworthy turning in high score, 6091 points. Alpha Sigma Alpha, represented by Myrta Probasco and Bertha Anderson were seventh with a score of 3918-there were fourteen entries in all.

The purpose of the tournament was to secure funds for the Student Activities Committee so as to secure a Student Union for Drexel. A fee was charged for entrance into the tournament and financially as well as otherwise the contest was deemed a great success.

Nu Nu is very proud of the fact that our own Dorothy Williamson in collaboration with Lou Oddy organized the Student Activities Committee for the purpose of putting over the drive which is for a most worthy cause.

May came in like a lamb bringing with it the presentation of the new Curtis Engineering Building, the formal dedication

by Mr. Cyrus K. Curtis, the donor, being held May second, with the address being delivered by Dr. Parke R. Kolbe, president of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. The building is of the most modern and the finest type and assures facilities of unusual completeness. Drexel may well be proud of its new addition.

May fourth, fifth and sixth brought one of the greatest events of the school year-the May Fete. Anne Williams, a member of Delta Sigma Epsilon, was crowned May Queen at the festival on Friday afternoon-and Friday night the largest social event of the year, the Senior Ball, was staged. The dance was held in the Great Court which was beautifully decorated to represent a Spring Garden. The music was excellent and the favors of bronze book ends were especially appropriate and useful. Alpha Sig was well represented on the committees for the ball-and many more members attended the dance. The Saturday afternoon saw an Athletic Carnival staged at the Drexel field and the May festivities came to a close Saturday

THE PHOENIX night when the Drexel students aided by professional artists, presented "11 Trovatore"-the opera was excellently staged in tableaux style and merited the highest praise-throughout the fete exhibitions (in all departments) were open to the public.

On May fifth, the Mother Patroness Service was given to Mrs. Howard Plumley and Mrs. Fred Downin. Nu Nu expects to give another service during graduation week.

Initiation services for Martha Sasse and Margaret Stebbing were given May fourteenth and we were exceedingly happy to welcome two more to our sisterhood. Following the services the new members entertained the old ones with a very stirring drama, presented in their best Alpha Sig style-Bertha Picard made an entrancing heroine, saved from the clutches of the cruel villain, (none other than Peg Rusling) by that marvelous hero, Mildred Odiorne. Doing things correct] y of course, delicious refreshments were served and we can truthfully say we owe the credit for one of the most delightful evenings of the year to the new Alpha Sigs.

May fifteenth we were granted the extreme pleasure of hearing Mr. Thaddeus Rich, formed y concert master of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra give a short program in our assembly. As usual Mr. Rich's numbers were excellently played, and the appreciation of his music 路if judged by the applause was almost boundless.

The annual Alpha Sig dance in honor of their "brother fraternity," Kappa Sigma Delta, was held in the Art Gallery on the seventeenth. A splendid representation of Kappa Sigs attended, and the excellent dance music by Paul Nicholson's orchestra more than made the evening a success.

Hermes Day came round once more and Nu Nu celebrated by giving a dinner and theatre party for its graduates of 1929.

We also nad as our guest Dean of Men J. Peterson Ryder who sails July eighteenth for a trip around the world. Dinner was served at the charming little inn, the Chimney Corner, and then the entire chapter escorted Mr. Ryder to the Garrick Theatre where we all saw and enjoyed the new George M. Cohan drama, "Gambling."

In addition to Dean Ryder, Drexel is to lose another almost equally famous personage, Lieutenant Howard E. Kelly, who

THE PHOENIX for the past four years has been Assistant Commander of Cadets at Drexel, has been ordered into active service and sails in August for the Philippines. His pleasing personality and good humor have won for Lieutenant Kelly the admiration of all the students. Both Lieutenant and Mrs. Kelly have been very prominent in all social functions of the school.

May twenty-fourth and twenty-ninth, the Frosh Frolic and Freshmen-Senior dances were held at the Rittenhouse and the Bellevue-Stratford Hotels, respectively-the former was given by the Freshmen men and the latter by the Freshmen womenboth dances were well attended by the Alpha Sigs who in turn reported excellent music and attractive favors.

In true brotherly style and in view 路at entertaining us on Memorial Day, the Kappa Sigma Delta fraternity invited Nu Nu chapter to a picnic at the Pleasantville Country Club, Pleasantville, New Jersey. I believe of the Alpha Sigs, only Sally Baxter and Edith Rood were able to attend but from the marvel<?us time reported we were all sorry that we could not be present.

Honor Day is always a day to be looked forward to at Drexel for it is then that scholastic awards are bestowed. Nu Nu did exceptionally well this year-Kathleen Clark who is also the new President of the honorary scholastic society, Key and Triangle, was awarded one of the Alumnce scholarships and Mildred Wenz, another of our girls was elected to the honorary society, Key and Triangle, while Edith Rood and Myrta Probasco received deturs.

Elections have been coming thick and fast during the past month and we are only too proud to think that so many Alpha Sigs have been chosen to guide the respective organizations.

Kathleen Clark besides being President of Key and Triangle honorary society will also lead the Senior class for next year.

Bertha Anderson and Romayne Gregory will guide the Junior Class as President and Vice-President respectively while Nan Scott is Treasurer of the Freshmen Class.

On Honor Day, Sally Baxter, the retiring President of Women's Student Government announced that Harriet Powell would succeed her. Romayne Gregory is the new Vice-President, Bertha Anderson, Secretary, while Adaline Hoffman and Margaret Lyon are to serve on the Executive Board.

THE PHOENIX Also Mildred W enz has been elected Captain of the Hockey Team for next year. Mildred is a member of the Meadowbrook Club and has played on their team for several years-we wish Mildred lots of success and know she will make a good captain.

Approaching examinations and graduation mark the close of the school year. June sixteenth is Baccalaureate Sunday with the services at the Church of the Saviour and the address by the Right Reverend Frank De Moulin, D.D.- Graduation is June seventeenth in the Drexel Auditorium, the address being given by William John Cooper, M.A., L.L.D., Ed.D-United States Commissioner of Education, Washington, D. C. Another college year has begun and it seems scarcely possible that summer has gone and we are back at work again.

Drexel opened on September twenty-third with a record enrollment and quite a few new members of the faculty. Several of our most noted personages are missing, chief among these being J. Peterson Ryder, dean of men, and one of Nu Nu's staunchest friends, who is enjoying a year's leave of absence to be spent in making a world tour. In his absence Dr. Leon Stratton, head of the chemistry department is filling Dean Ryder's position in a 路most successful fashion. We wish him much luck in his new office.

We regret deeply the absence of our former adviser, Miss Mildred Burdett, who with her family sails October twelfth for Europe. On the other hand, we are most pleased to welcome Miss Jean Richmond whom we have chosen, and who has most kindly accepted the position as advisor to Nu Nu. We hope that Miss Richmond will be happy as a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and with true co-operation from all we look forward to a most successful year.

A fine beginning for the new year was made when the annual freshman camp for women was opened Saturday, September twenty-first. About thirty-five new girls were escorted to Drexel football game and from there by bus to the Garret Williamson Lodge at Newtown Square. The annual camp is sponsored by theY. W. C. A. who always provide most admirable entertainment. Several members of the Home Economics Faculty were present as well as a great many of the older girls who helped the new girls to become better acquainted. The

girls returned to town Sunday afternoon and all reported a most enjoyable week-end.

As for athletics, so far Drexel's season has not been such a successful one, having lost our two opening games to Westchester and Swarthmore. However, the season is yet young so everyone is hoping for better luck next time.

Nu Nu is extremely fortunate in having such a large number of girls returning to school. The following girls having registered for the year: Bertha Anderson, Kathleen Clark, Elizabeth Downin, Romayne Gregory, Eleanor Henderson, Adaline Hoffman, Jane Large, Margaret Lyon, Mildred Odiorne, Bertha Pickard, Louise Plumley, Alice Pratt, Margaret Rusling, Martha Sasse, Nan Scott, Georgia Sherred, Margaret Stebbing, Mildred Wenz, and Dorothy Williamson.

Meanwhile, it being the custom for Alpha Sigma Alpha to give the first tea dance of the season, plans are being rapidly formed to give the dance October ninth, in the Art Gallery.

It has always been one of the most delightful of the opening affairs and all are hoping that it will be bigger and better than ever this year.

Plans are also being made for the Y. W. C. A. Big and Little Sister tea dance which will also be given in the very near future. 路 The first fall meeting of Alpha Sigma Alpha will be held October first at which time plans will be formulated for the work of the coming year which we hope will be one of the most successful ones in the annals of Nu Nu chapter.

Paul Tyson Moyer was born to Dr. and Mrs. Paul Moyer (nee Elizabeth Loughrey) on September twentieth; 1929.

Nancy Ann Montesant was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Montesant (nee Beulah Hafer) on July thirty-first, 1929. :tyfany of our girls of last year are fast becoming active in the business world. Evelyn Snyder and Clara Swisher have secretarial positions in Philadelphia. Myrta Probasco is holding a position of similar nature in Trenton, New Jersey; while Cynthia Metzerger is doing secretarial work in Drexel.

Sara Baxter, who was one of Nu Nu's most active members of last year, is teaching house economics in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Margaret Rossiter also has a teaching position in a school outside of Philadelphia.

At the present time Ruth Hasenfuss is at her home in the city and Edith Rood is also living in Philadelphia. Both have recently returned from a short vacation in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Blanche Ball, who was forced to leave school last year because of illness, was not able to return this year, but she paid Drexel a visit a few days before school opened and expects to be back to see all the girls real soon.

Word also comes to us that Harriet King, a former Nu Nu member, and now attending Boston University, may pay us a visit in the near future.

Edith Hetherington has been touring through Canada this summer, but has returned to her teaching position in New York City; while Alice Kay is back in Philadelphia teaching in the city schools.

Nu Nu feels especially fortunate in having so many of her old girls: handy to Drexel to aid us in our places for the coming year, and needless to say everyone is looking forward to what we all hope will be a most successful season.

OMICRON OMICRON CHAPTER On Mother's Day, the members of Omicron Omicron chapter invited their mothers to the noonday luncheon in Lowry Hall and had their tables decorated in red and white. After the luncheon the girls had a reception in the Off-Campus Club room-our regular meeting room- for the mothers to become acquainted with each other and the other girls in our chapter.

The annual affair of the college, "Campus Nite," was held on the Monday night preceding graduation. Omicron Omicron chapter is proud to say that one of her members, Millie Greene, was chosen the May Queen. Other members took part in the folk dances and every member was in the "Lantern Parade." The Alpha Sigma Alpha girls wore white dresses and red tams. The parade circled the horseshoe drive and as each sorority and fraternity came up the entrance steps, they gave their yell, but the Alpha Sigma Alphas sang their own "sweetheart song"-to the tune of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart"Won't you be a sweetheart of an A. S. A. Won't you let her love you as the years pass away?

You could be so happy, if your heart you'd give In the love and keeping of an A. S. A.

THE PHOENIX The final wind-up of the evening was the gathering in the Wills gymnasium, which was darkened, each one carrying a lighted Japanese lantern and everyone singing "Hail, Hail the Gang's All Here," then the orchestra started playing and we had a real "get-together."

In our last assembly-given over to the graduates, was held on Thursday, June sixth, Madge George sang "Moonbeams" and "When You are Seventeen," she was accompanied by Helen Van Allen, both members of our chapter. Madge also had the as she has a very sweet and cultured lead . in the spring opera, VOICe .

Our spring formal was held on June the sixth at Wycliffe Manor in Youngstown and there were probably ninety members and alumni attended. The formal was in the form of a dinner dance. The banquet consisted of six courses in which our colors both started and ended it; the fruit cocktail consisting of watermelon and fresh pineapple and finishing up with strawberry shortcake and red and white mints. Everyone had a very enjoyable time and a tired but happy bunch left the Manor, reluctantly.

On June the seventh at nine-thirty in the morning, the graduating exercises took place. The address was given by John L. Clifton, Director of Education in the State of Ohio.

The college quintet sang "Carmena," in whi~h Madge George took part.

Six members of the Omicron Omicron chapter graduated this spring, four with the Diploma Class: Mary Balint, Madge George, Dora Carson, and Edna King; two with the Physical Education Diploma: Millie Greene and Pauline Krahl.

Happy Sapp trekked to Painesville to the track meet as a representative of Kent State College on May the twenty-ninth and thirtieth .

Millie Greene worked on the playgrounds of Cleveland last summer.

Creta Benedict has accepted a position as teacher in Gambier for this coming fall.

Mrs. Jack Chernin, nee Sara Snyder, has been teaching in the Akron schools since February.

PI PI CHAPTER Dear Marge: No fair being angry because I haven't written in such a long time! I couldn't help it, could I, if I had so much to do?

Anyway I'm going to start right at the beginning and tell you everything and then you'll show this letter to all the other girls because I couldn't write another one like this is going to be. Fond expectations?

There were just seven initiated this year. The ceremony took place in the Georgian rooms at the Statler. Afterward we had a dinner. All the initiates had darling corsages of red rose buds and white sweet peas. Thelma Corcoran, Margaret Main, Miss Small, our faculty adviser, and Dot Ewers, our new president were the speakers. We were so proud of our pins and corsages and everything!

The pledges had had such a good time at all the rush parties that we decided to return the good time by having a party for the other girls. Probably my opinion is biased, I having been one of the pledges, but anyway I think it was a pretty nice party. It was an Alpha-Bet Party. The invitations were written with red ink on long narrow strips of white paper.

They were worded like this: "Asa's besides cherubs dear endeavor friends gratitude having in joy keeping let May sixth, Northampton 423, open provide quaint rendezvous songs til u vicious will xperiences yodel z's. If you are very clever, you will see that by reading every other word there is some sense to it. At the party, we had a stunt. Since we who were in it were not supposed to laugh, I giggled until I almost cried.

You see we had a church service in which everything said was according to the alphabet-if you know what I mean. Grace Martiny delivered a perfectly heart-breaking sermon and the choir outdid itself.

You can't imagine how much fun we had at our house party at Doris Glunz's. Florence Nevins, Helen Block and Abie Brems came and were chaperones-not that we needed any but you know how it is! Anyway, they called themselves that.

The regular members insisted that we pledges give a stunt at midnight. You know there were only six of us and one was

absent. Five can't very well give a good stunt and so we tried to "stall." That didn't do much good. However-Corky Junior fell down stairs and hurt herself, not enough to cause any worry, but just enough to make them forget all about the stunt! Instead Fay Leidy made some coffee and 路we ate fruit and rolls and butter and drank coffee and had fun.

We're going to have another party, a house party, too, at Attica when everybody's exams are all over. Mine don't come until next week, and so I have all this week to worry over them.

The Mother's tea, where the fathers were especially invited, was lovely.

The Freshmen won Moving-Up-Day last Wednesday! Of course, they would! Besides, the Black team won the Freshman tournament-Corky and I being on the Black. Some of the sections did an athletic pageant, a few had folk dances, and then all the Freshmen did a dance called "Reap the Flax."

All this happened at Crystal Beach, after the parade and assembly program at school.

The Panhellenic Sing! We won ! !!- not that we didn't 路 expect to! We looked stunning, if I do say it myself. Everybody wore a red jacket, white skirt, white shoes, and a red beret and carried a red swagger stick with red and white ribbons. Fay Leidy directed us. She looked perfectly darling in a costume just the opposite from ours. We sang "Sisterhood of Mine" and another new one, the words of which Doris Glunz made up. The tune was that of a song they sing at CornelL While we sang the new song we stood in the form of an A, and then we marched to a Sigma and repeated the chorus, and then back to the A for "Sisterhood of Mine." Anyway, we won first place. Afterwards there was a Panhellenic dinner which was good fun.

Did you know that Ruth Molyneaux was editor of this year's Elms? Verna Corcoran was chairman of Moving-UpDay and Thelma Corcoran was girl marshal of the the Freshman class. Grace Martiny was elected secretary of the junior class for next year. Really, we're getting so famous that hats don't fit anymore!

You should have been here to see the freshman assembly program. Everybody said it was wonderful and I think it was

THE PHOENIX too. It was made up of six skits on the life of a freshman. One of our faculty said it was the best show he had ever seen at our school!

The play given on kindergarten day was "Polly Patches."

The audience, as one of my instructors put it, "went wild over it." Kay Mitchell was an old school trustee-! don't know how she kept from laughing!-Fay Leidy was a young belle who played her ukulele and sang beautifully.

I know you can't possibly be having as good a time as we are but anyway, I hope you are and wish you the best of luck in your exams !-and me too!

* * * * Dear Marge, I suppose you feel quite important now that you are away at school. Anyway, you're really not as important as I am because you are a freshman and I am a sophomore, you know, and did you ever see anybody more important than a sopho路 more? Whatever would the freshmen have done without us on the first day of school? We had a free checkroom for them and even took them on a tour of the building. For all our importance, though, I felt rather sorry that I was not one of those "green things." You see, when we did silly things last year, people excused us, saying that we probably didn't know any better. Now, since we have had plenty of chance to learn how to be sensible, I guess they think we're just plain nit-wits, whatever they are.

Nit-wits or half-wits, we were witty enough to have a surprise party, which was really a "surprise," for Doris Burton, who is teaching in Springfield, Massachusetts this year. Geneva Dusing, Mary Martiny, Grace Olief, Helen Rich, and Margaret Main are teaching out of town, too. Katherine Mitchell is going to Temple University, where she'll meet some more Alpha Sigs. Ramona Dahlman, Dorothy Freund, Doris Glunz,.

Ruth Molyneux, and Verna Corcoran have appointments here in Buffalo. All the rest of the girls-Edna Grampp, Eleanor Hickey, Helen Lazer, Faye Leidy, Dorothy Marley, Grace Martiny, Ruth Puls, Elizabeth Rowe, Eleanor Schiersing, Pauline Setter, Alice Weatherston, and Ruth Lies are all back at school.

THE PHOENIX Every one of these girls was at our first supper meeting at 路 Dot Ewer's. At this meeting, we planned a tea for the excollegia chapter so that the two chapters might become better acquainted.

Of course we haven't any plans, definite rushing plans, as yet. We think, however, that the rules concerning personal rushing will not be nearly so strict this year as they have been.

We shall be very glad of this because our girls seem to have a mania for over-stepping this particular Panhellenic ruling.

Oh, Marge, do you know that the cornerstone for our new building is to be laid Wednesday, October ninth? On that day, at noon we will be dismissed and excused from classes (of course on Wednesday I don't have any classes after eleven) and will go in a body to the new school where the exercises will be held in the new auditorium. We are learning new songs for that great occasion and everybody is terribly enthused over it. Well, who wouldn't? Just think of a brand new wonderful college! Of course, I won't spend much time there as it will not be ready for use until December, 1930. In the evening, October ninth, there will be a dinner at the Hotel Statler in honor of those who contributed their time and effort to the realization of this undertaking.

Just think, we have ten new teachers at school! Three of them graduated from here. I have one of them for Nature Study. She is "awfly nice" but we have to collect ten insects and how I hate to do that!

Well, I can't write anymore because I have to think up a play for History and catch my bugs!

XI XI CHAPTER We rose to the position of champions in May when we won the Inter-Sorority swimming meet. The competition was very keen, and we only succeeded in defeating Kappa Kappa Gamma by one point. But that one point gave us a bronze placque with which to decorate the walls of our chapter house.

Pink and lavender flowers and lovely, little rose corsages heralded our Mother's Tea on May rr. Lavender candles and pink and lavender flowers formed the decorations with Mrs.

THE PHOENIX Lownsberry, our house mother, acting as hostess. During the afternoon pink ices, French pastries; and tea were served to the mothers.

Our Spring Formal was held at the Deauville Beach Club this year. The decorations were carried out in red and black.

Everyone had great fun, and we are looking forward to our For mal next year.

We held initiation June thirteenth at our patroness' home, Mrs. Alfred Fellows, for Olive Jackson, Betty Pease, Effie Eade, and Eugenia Welcher. After initiation, we entertained our new members with a dinner at the Mona Lisa.

As a farewell to our chapter house, we held an informal dance there June eighth. Because it was so informal, we had one of the most successful affairs of the year. We've had so much fun in our house this year that we feel lost without the hope of having it again next year.

We were all so thrilled this spring when two of our members earned special honors in 路 college. Esther Johnson was elected to Prytinean, Junior-Senior women's honorary fraternity. Women are 路chosen for this fraternity because of high scholarship and participation in college activities. The other honor was won by Melidia Cartensen when she was awarded the C sweater. Melidia earned this award through her leadership in athletics.

SIGMA SIGMA CHAPTER Our Spring Formal is over, and there is a breathing space.

It was decided in Panhellenic this year that no sorority should give favors at the Spring Formals, contrary to the usual custom.

Well-to be different-a Dinner-Dance was decided upon.

The dinner was served at small tables of two couples each.

The tables had beautiful centerpieces of lilacs and other spring flowers. Green candles in brass candlesticks added greatly to the tables, and the candles gave a soft glow in the room. At nine o'clock, we were ready to dance at the College Club House. The club house was decorated in modernistic fashion. The walls had been papered with wrapping paper upon which we had painted futuristic designs. It was a sight to see ye old paper hangers _starting out at seven o'clock that very

morning. The ceiling of the room was a mass of huge modernistic balloons, intermingled with gold moons and stars.

Futuristic palm trees nodded knowingly to bridge and floor lamps alike. And, oh, the animals- huge red and black cats grinned as though enjoying the peppy music of the Collegians; an orange cat sulked on the mantle; a poochie-pet chased a black, fuzzy-tailed cat; a pink elephant sat back in amused silence; wise old owls stared in blank despair; yellow bunnies had put on swallow-tailed coats for the occasion; and a real live moon peeped in at the windows. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and our decorations are still the topic of conversation; so we are hoping the affair was a success.

Mildred Stevens, Senior, has given Alpha Sigma Alpha much to be proud of this year. She was recently elected Queen of the Spring Fete at Western. Many of her attendants were Alpha Sigs too, and all of us are happy with Mildred.

"Stevie" also had the great honor of being elected the representative girl student in college this year. An enlarged picture of her appears in our Annual, the Curecanti, which is just out.

Ronald Crawford was elected the representative boy, and he is the brother of Vesta, another Alpha Sig. One night, not so long ago, we all went over to Rosellen Tompkin's to a candy party. We made pillows for our dance and ate candy that the pledges made. It was good candy, and we had a "regular" time. Since then, we have had initiation for Vernice Pratt and Ruth Bhurmaster, and we shall initiate Ruby Buhrmester, Goldie Hansen, Gladys Gitzhoffen, and Herma Marshall this week.

One of the most happy days spent this quarter was Mother's Day. We celebrated most all day, and were proud to have so many Mothers present. The first thing was church. We attended the Community Church in a body, and then at onethirty met for luncheon at the Commercial Hotel. The girls who had no Mothers, or whose Mothers could not be present, invited our Patronesses and other guests. Beth Johnston sang "Mother of Mine" and Mildred Stevens talked on "What Mother Means to Us." At three o'clock we went to the Sorority House for Mother-Patroness initiation. Those who took the degree were Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Osterman,

and Mrs. Crawford. Those already belonging to the organization and able to be present were: Mrs. Wolfe, Mrs. McKee, Mrs. Tompkins, Mrs. Peck and Mrs. Miller.

On Saturday, June first, our Patronesses entertained us at a Bridge-Luncheon. Their decorations were yellow and white.

The luncheon was lovely, and we enjoyed the bridge. Iris Osterman received the prize for high score. It was a darling peach teddy, and she promised that each of us could borrow it sometime. Jewell Kennedy received an amber costume necklace for low score. Even though her luck was bad in bridge, we would have been glad to have changed places with her.

Sigma Sigma has only eleven old members returning. That means concentrated rushing. Our house is the same one we had two years ago-the Tomkins residence. Beside Rosellen and her mother, Gertrude Morrison, Herma Marshall, Callie Douthitt and Miriam Lewis are staying at the house. Alice Rachel Peck, Zona Lashbrook, Jean McKee, Ruth and Ruby Buhrmester and myself are staying elsewhere.

Of course the main topic of conversation is "rushing." Panhellenic has not yet decided upon the dates of rushing, but planning is going on at a great rate anyhow. We always hope for the best-that being what we must have.

Not much was done of interest this summer. One delightful affair was a shower and bridge party for Zona Lashbrook.

We enjoyed the bridge and envied Zona her pretty things.

Sigma Sigma has certainly added many brothers to her ranks this summer. Dan Cupid stopped off here in Gunnison last spring and made an extended visit.

School just started Monday and this is Wednesday. Consequently there is very little of interest to report this early in the season. We are hardly settled.

Construction is soon to commence on the completion of Central Hall and Auditorium. The Legislature granted an $8o,ooo appropriation to Western State College this spring, and now we are going to do things.

We anticipate a splendid year for Alpha Sigma Alpha at Western State in 1929-30.

Rosalie Corey is teachi ng again this year at Cedaredge, Colorado.

She was with us in school this summer, the same old jolly Rosalie.

Our beloved "Stevie" (Mildred Stevens), Representative Student at Western, 1929, is teaching at Dolores this winter.

We expected Avis Peck McDonough back this year, but she disappointed us. Dr. Frank has been studying surgery in Philadelphia, and they have moved to Rutherfordton, North Carolina, for a year. We are all anxious to see their new son and heir. lrys Osterman has accepted a position as High School Commercial teacher near Pueblo, Colorado. We expect Irys home for Homecoming, and we are all anxious to see her.

Elizabeth Johnston is teaching just out of Grand Junction this year.

Elizabeth had an Alpha Sig party at her home in Montrose this summer. There were eight girls present. They enjoyed bridge and the theatre.

We hear that two of our girls are in the Civil Service in Washington, D. C. They are Ruth Buswell and Jewell Kennedy Burnett. Jewel's husband is studying law there this year.

Irene Sandifer visited Gunnison this summer. She will teach at Boone, Colorado, this year, having given up her school at Dover Creek.

Lupie Blake Orr came up from Grand Junction for a short visit this summer. The Orrs make their home in Grand Junction now, where Wall ace is a druggist.

Rosellen Tomkins and her mother spent their vacation at their old home in Buena Vista. Gertrude Morrison also spent her vacation there.

The Buhrmester girls were at home at Manzanola, Colorado, this summer.

UPSILON UPSILON CHAPTER. We are proud to announce the initiation of Rachel Barnett, 375 East Canal Street, Newcomerstown, Ohio, on May fifteenth. The initiation was held at the home of Mrs. E. B. Hawes, our Chapter Adviser. Following the service a Banquet was held at Kampus Korner. We had as our guest Mrs. Overturf, a Mother Patroness.

Mother's Week-end was observed at Denison May tenth to twelfth. The visiting mothers certainly were kept busy from the moment of arrival until their departure. Mother's Day four Alpha Sigma Alpha mothers took the Mother Patroness degree. They were: Mrs. R. W. Edmondson, Alexandria, Ohio; Mrs. C. D. Gienger, Newark, Ohio; Mrs. Tom, Toledo, Ohi.o; and Mrs. Sterling, Martins Ferry, Ohio. Yellow and white roses, sympols of the Mother Patroness Organization were given to the mothers.

Our kitchenette looks spiffy now with its new china and aluminum.

We entertained some mothers and alumna: with a tea at "The Nest," Sunday evening, May ninth. Mrs. Parks, Minonk, Illinois; and Mrs. Llewellyn, Wheaton, Illinois received the Mother Patroness degree at that time.

Hark ye! On September twenty-eighth Denison's warriors go to Annapolis to scalp Navy! Other true Denisonians will peacefully (?? ?) or otherwise listen to the returns of this bloody battle over the radio. By means of this radio party, Upsilon Upsilon girls will entertain their new Alpha Sig prospects. If we can control our Denison spirits long enough, we will play bridge-and eat!

College opening is always a happy time in spite of all the fuss and hurry. The freshman class this year is exceptionally interesting and holds some bright propects for Alpha Sig. The registration for the first semester, I929-1930, totals 763. This includes 396 men and 364 women. Out of this number, there are r36 freshman men, and 129 freshman women.

Friday evening, September twentieth, the "General Jam" was lived up to for three hours. This Denison tradition has been in vogue for more than forty years and was generally called "General Reception." For those who cannot guess what this affair is, we'll confess. It is where all the men are formally introduced to all the women in Denison. Each upperclassman takes a new student and presents him, thus giving everyone a partner to introduce.

PHI PHI CHAPTER Alpha Sigma Alpha entertained the members of her sister sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma, at a tea-at the sorority house.

The tea table was attractively decorated in purple and white, the colors of the honored sorority. A lace cover was used on the table, and a bowl of purple and white sweet peas was used as a center piece. Four large purple tapers in crystal candle sticks were placed on the four sides of the center piece. The refreshments were also in purple and white. During the tea several musical numbers and readings were given.

The big event of the year for Alpha Sigmas, at least the most thrilling event, was our Spring Formal, given on the night of April twenty-seventh. The formal was in form of a boat called the S. S. King Asa which set sail with the Alpha Sigs and guests at eight-thirty o'clock at the Country Club dock.

There was a grand scramble up the gang-plank and a rush among those who wished to be on deck to watch the raging storm. Over the waters the lighthouse sent out red, green and blue signal lights and when the sea had subsided somewhat the dance began, but throughout the evening waves lashed foam-white above the railing of the good ship carrying on its bow the emblazoned name King Asa. About three miles out Captain McDaniel conducted the life-boat drill, an appropriate forrri of the usual grand march, at the finish of which each guest received his or her Life Saver mints. Other favor dances were the sparkler dance, established traditional to Alpha Sigma Alpha and a confetti dance. The feature of entertainment was a solo dance, the "Sailor's Hornpipe," executed by Miss "Pat" Davis. Keys to the staterooms in the form of en-

THE PHOENIX graved key-cases were given as favors to all invited guests. The special pride of the captain, the ship's wheel, was copied from and made by the owner of a trim sport yacht, the Bearcat, winner (they were ever champions) of three regattas at Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie, near Sandusky, Ohio. Groups of guests were allowed the privilege of eating a course at the officers table with its unique model of "Old Ironsides."

The next day after the formal Alpha Sigma Alpha had its initiation for the new pledges. The following girls were made active members: Martha Wyman, Martha Pheiffer, Imogene Woolf, and Thelma Stoneburner, also our sponsor Miss Nell Martindale, After the initiation the girls were invited to a buffet supper at Mrs. Pearsons, one of our patronesses. We all sat on the floor and talked and had a lovely time and the eats were delicious. I'm sure the new members felt proud indeed . to be true Alpha Sigmas.

The second day of our May Fete which was on May nineteenth, Alpha Sigmas entertained their mothers with a tea.

Both the girls and the mothers participated on the program and I'm sure Alpha Sigma girls were as delighted to have their mothers with them as the mothers were to be there, because every one hated to leave when the tea was over. Several mothers of the members were given patroness degrees. Degrees were given to Mrs. P. T. Wyman, Mrs. Charley Pheiffer, Mrs. T. A. Todd, Mrs. S. G. Selecman, Mrs. Warren Jones, Mrs. G. W. Brown, and Mrs. Carrie Norwine.

Another delightful function given toward the last of school was a party given by Mrs. Clun Price and Mrs. W. G. Whiffen, patronesses of Alpha Sigma Alpha, at the home of Mrs. Price.

Mrs. Price has a lovely home and the girls all agreed again that they had the most wonderful patronesses imaginable.

The last week of school the girls decided they wanted one last time together, so a picnic breakfast was given at the Country Club. It was a lovely morning and there was plenty of foo::l for everyone present. The girls said it was the hap_eiest moments they had ever spent together.

Alpha Sigma lost two of its treasured members in graduation, Hildred Fitz and Wiletta Todd. The graduation address was given by Bishop McMurrey and was very splendid.

The class play given by the graduating class was "Much to Do About Nothing" and one of our members, Alice Hastings, who graduated last year and was in school this past year doing post graduate work took one of the leading roles. Every one was proud of Alice in the role of Beatrice.

Summer quarter began June fourth and much to the joy of Alpha Sigmas there were fifteen back in school, also two ex-collegia members, Ruth Harding and Beatrice Stewert. We also had an Alpha Sig from Warrensburg, Gladys Pulley, attending school at S. T. C. Thursday we had a picnic at Gertrude Wray's home. This is just one of the many happy times we had during the summer term. S. T. C. brought some very excellent entertainers to its students this summer.

How wonderful it is to get back to school and see all A. S. A.s' again. Every one is so full of pep and enthusiasm they're almost brimming over.

First I must tell you a little of what Phi Phi Chapter did this summer. During the summer months Alpha Sig held monthly social gatherings. The Fourth of July we had a picnic at the Country Club. We ate, shot fire crackers and had loads of fun. Later on in the summer a social was held at Gertrude W ray's, and Alpha Sigs again enjoyed happy associations together. The last of July the Chevrolet people opened a new distributing center in Maryville, and Alpha Sigmas worked there on the opening day and represented Chevrolet cars. What fun it was. Not a single girl forgot during the summer that she was an Alpha Sigma.

School opened on September eleventh and we were pleased with the old Alpha Sig's returning. Those that came back were Evelyn Evans, Isabel McDaniels, Karol Oliphant, Martha Pfeiffer, Martha Wyman, Irene Smith, Imogene Woolf, Juanita Marsh, Gertrude W ray and Betty Selecman.

S. T. C. has an enrollment of six-hundred-ninety-three.

Everything seems the same with the exception of several new teachers. We have several outstanding members on our facult y this year. The new teachers are: Mr. Miller, head of Public Speaking Department; Miss Hawkins, English; Miss Osborne, English; Miss Barton, piano; Miss Winfrey, Dean of Women.

Last, but not least, I am going to tell you about our rush party which was held on Wednesday, September the eighteenth.

Here's an invite a la manicure set To a party you'll like, on that we'll bet; It's a boudoir affair-very informal, We'll have a good time-just act normal Alpha Sig House, Wednesday, at eight We hope you'll be there-shall we call it a date?

Twenty-six rushees received this little rhyme written on a folder designed .as a manicure set, inviting them to attend the rush party at the sorority house. These sets were of imitation red leather and were stamped with a silver seal bearing the Alpha Sigma crest. The name of the invited guests were printed in white on the outside. When the rushees arrived they found the ten rooms of the sorority house converted into softly lighted boudoirs with the hostesses attired in silk pajamas and lounging robes. Alluring signs telling the merits of various powders, perfumes and creams were set up and about the room. Futuristic mirrors, French dolls, boudoir pillows, silk scarfs and shaded lamps, added atmosphere.

French maids assisted during the evening giving powder and perfume to the guests. Mrs. Ray Hull danced a "Vanity" number. Immediately after the French maids passed trays containing boudoir dolls wearing imitation A. S. A. pins.

Other specialties were given during the evening. The last feature was a boudoir pillow dance. Each rushee drew a number and was instructed to find a pillow with the same number.

This was given as the principal favor of the evening. Refreshments were carried out in red and white, sorority colors. Boudoir candle gum drops, cocoanut powder puffs and raspberry ice were served. After the guests left there were many happy Aloha Sigs thrilled about prospective members and plans for this next year.

CHI CHI CHAPTER Chi Chi held a rummage sale on April twenty-seventh to raise money for the Eliza A. Blaker Endowment Fund at Teachers College. Every chapter member contributed old clothes, shoes, and other odds and ends, and it was surprising how much rummage we had to sell. The amount of twentyfive dollars was made and presented to the school on Class Day, June sixth, by Katherine Haas, the chapter president.

A festive spread was held on May twenty-fourth in honor of Maury Rauh Kingdon of Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Kingdon was one of the important speakers when the local chapter was installed.

Evelyn Hall entertained members of Chi Chi Chapter with a lovely party at her home in honor of Founders' Day, Saturday evening, May twenty-fifth. Large masses of red roses decorated the table and were given to the members as favors.

Lighted red tapers, and ice cream served with strawberries helped to complete the sorority color scheme of red and white.

Chi Chi celebrated the first anniversary of the chapter on the Teachers College campus with an informal tea at the chapter house, Sunday, May twenty-sixth, from three until six o'clock. Spring flowers, attractively placed, and green tapers were used as decorations throughout the house. In the receiving line were Misses Anna Fern, Mary Turner, Katherine Haas, Irene Shaffer, and Mrs. Frank Leib. Lois Herring and Elizabeth Lanaux .poured tea at a beautifully arranged table decorated in flowers and lighted tapers.

The Indianapolis mothers of Chi Chi entertained the outof-town mothers and graduates of the chapter with an informal party at the home of Helen Selvage on the evening of June sixth. The very impressive services of the Mother-Patroness degree, read by Mrs. Frank Leile, were given to Mrs. Souder, Mrs. Burton, and Mrs. Shaffer.

Baccalaureate services for two hundred-fifty-eight graduating students were held at the Broadway Episcopal Church on Sunday, June second. "The Power of an Ideal" was the subject of the inspiring sermon by Dr. Thomas W. White. Music by the college glee club was a feature of the service.

Diplomas were conferred on the graduating students at the commencement exercises at Roberts Park Church on Friday morning,. June seventh. Dr. Stanley Coulter, dean emeritus of Purdue University and a member of the Advisory Board of Teachers College, was the principal speaker. President Alice Corbin Sies presented the diplomas to the graduates. President Sies also read out the names of students who were on the honor roll, which is composed of those members of the graduating class who have been consistently in the upper fourth of the school in scholarship, and who in addition have been in the judgment of the faculty, outstandingly good citizens of the college during their residence. There were four members of Chi Chi chapter on this Honor Roll: Katherine Haas, Lois Herring, Harriet Pollock, and Gwendolyn Sheering.

CHI CHI ALUMNAE The first regular meeting of the Chi Chi Alumna: this fall was just like a reunion. Everyone had been away during the summer and it was so good to see them and be with them agam.

Helen Selvage had hardly come in the door before she was telling us about her trip to California. It was her second, but much more interesting than the hrst, inasmuch as her cousin is one of the younger stars in Hollywood, and did he show her around.

Berenice Lamb was out for excitement, she and two other girls started from Indianapolis, just driving some place and -well you can be the judge-Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, Denver and 'most everywhere.

Betty Rice and her husband spent a wonderful vacation at Lake W awasee and brought back the voguish sun-tan complexion.

Eloise Proctor went home to Morristown, Tenn., for the summer and came back just in time to start teaching. It was a romantic summer for Eloise, she has a diamond on her left hand.

Adelaide McCarty went to Columbia University to study but she also found time to go to Atlantic City, Washington, D. C., and other Eastern points. Helen Emick is going to Columbia this winter and is very anxious to see some Alpha Sigs there.

Mary Turner went to Butler University this summer but was finished in time to go up to Chicago, and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Julia Gerlach, her husband and daughter, Julia Ann, spent their vacation at Cabot Lodge, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Geneive Leib, her husband and son Billy, were in Milwaukee, Chicago and Lake Tippecanoe through the summer.

Dorothy Darrough has just returned from Texas, where she has been convalescing this summer.

Letha Gaskins spent most of her summer at her summer lodge in Brown County. She is anticipating a good time with her husband at the Delta U convention at French Lick.

After everyone came "down to earth" and stopped talking about vacations we really had a meeting. Plans were completed for the Rush Party which the Alumna: always give for the rushees and active girls, during Rush Week. It was voted to have the annual luncheon at the C.olumbia Club, during the Indiana State Teachers' Association Convention.

The Rush Party at the Club was a real success, the day was perfect, the food was good, and everybody came. We met at the sorority house and the alumna: who had not met the rushees had a chance to get acquainted. It is quite a drive out to the Club, which of course made everyone's appetite "keen."

The luncheon was served right on time and attractively served, so we're sure everyone enjoyed it. After luncheon everyone played bridge and the best players were of course rewarded.

We are all looking forward to the luncheon during State Teachers' Convention and hope that any Alpha Sigs who are teaching in Indiana this year, and do not belong to Chi Chi, will make themselves known and attend the luncheon.

SWAMPSCOTT AND CONVENTION It seems most fitting that in 1930 the West should journey East for a convention. The year 1930 is a tercentenary year for Boston and all New England is celebrating with Boston.

Thus there will be many attractions to offer those who come in search of history at first hand. Boston is rich in history as everyone knows. Up to date over six hundred conventions have been booked for 1930 in Boston.

We were very fortunate in securing a place so near to Boston, and yet away from the city proper on the cool ocean side for the 1930 convention of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Swampscott is only twelve miles from Boston, and is one of the most exclusive sections of the North Shore of Massachusetts. Here, facing the wide expanse of Massachusetts Bay, stands the New Ocean House, a long-established and widely known resort hotel. This hotel has been catering to convention business for more than a quarter of a century, and many national sororities have held conventions there. There is ample accommodation space and many facilities which will aid us in getting to know each other better.

Now is the time to make your plans and to save your money for that trip east you have so often thought about. Many conventions mean lower railroad rates, a large number of delegates from the west would mean a special train running direct to Swampscott. Now is the time for City Associations to elect committees to plan for raising money so that they can send delegates to convention. Full information concerning hotel rates and railroad fares from various central points will be announced in the January PHoENIX. As a general statement for now to give you a hint as to hotel expenses, the double room with twin beds and bath will be eight dollars a day, including board.

Watch for the January PHoENIX and meanwhile lay your plans for the best convention Alpha Sigma Alpha ever had.
