Life was a challenge for women in 1872 – especially if you were a woman who desired an education.

The idea of coeducation posed a serious threat to society’s belief that men and women were vastly different in their ability to learn. Back then, many people were concerned that educating women posed all kinds of dangers. They worried that girls who spent too much energy developing their minds during puberty would end up with undeveloped or diseased reproductive systems. Some feared – and this is my favorite – if men and women associated together in college, they might find each other less attractive.

This was the popular culture our young Founders faced. These were the types of challenges they accepted when they chose to enter Syracuse University as 10 of the first 20 women to be admitted.

Alpha Phi’s Original Ten were extraordinary women. They were optimists, and they were doers. They had a vision of a worldwide women’s society based on sisterhood, scholarship and service. They knew it would take courage, hard work and action to transform their dream into reality. They also knew for Alpha Phi to stand the test of time, they had to inspire a sense of commitment equal to their own in future generations … in women they would never meet. They did this the only way they knew – by example.

They set the tone in Alpha Phi more than a century ago, not by making promises to us, but rather by challenging us. They set the expectation that no matter the circumstances, no matter the problem or the obstacle, no matter the changes in society or the course of world events, Alpha Phi must find a way to be successful, strong and proud. And we have for 141 years!

It was my great pleasure to celebrate Founders’ Day this year with Alpha Phis in New York, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago and Evanston. Of historic note was the release of Alpha Phi International Fraternity: The First Fifty Years (1872-1922), Union Hand in Hand, the first of a three-volume series documenting Alpha Phi’s rich history (read more about this project on page 35). A personal highlight for me was listening to its author, Alpha Phi Foundation Archivist Jenny Thompson (Alpha LambdaAlumna Initiate), discuss her research on the book.

I was enthralled by each magnificent story. Jenny signed my copy, and I’ve read it cover to cover. It occupies a place of prominence in my living room. Each time I see it, I am reminded the work we do today will one day be written about on a page in another history book. I hope readers 100 years from now will swell with pride when Linda with Jenny Thompson, author of Alpha Phi they read about all we have International Fraternity: The First Fifty Years (1872-1922), Union Hand in Hand. accomplished during this period of time.

Alpha Phi International Hosts Founders’ Day Events

In fall 2013, Alpha Phi celebrated 141 years of extraordinary sisterhood – and what a milestone it was! To commemorate our Founders, Alpha Phi International Fraternity and Alpha Phi Foundation hosted Founders’ Day events around the U.S. to connect sisters and reflect on our rich history.

Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Evanston were selected as the locations for the second year of Alpha Phi Internationalsponsored Founders’ Day events.

Local alumnae were asked to coordinate the celebrations, with support from the Executive Office staff.

International President Linda Long Boland (Gamma KappaCSU/Long Beach), Foundation Chair Diane Spry Straker (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) and other notable Alpha Phi volunteers spoke at the events.

“It was incredibly powerful to witness how 10 women more than 140 years ago could create an organization that would impact women for generations to come,” said Gwendolyn Hill (Gamma Epsilon-Lake Forest), chair of the Houston event.

“These events bring us together to celebrate an organization that has impacted us all in so many ways.”

Members from 26 chapters spanning all ages attended the Founders’ Day celebration in Houston, the largest group having initiated at the Texas (Omega) chapter. Alumnae capitalized on the opportunity for a reunion with chapter sisters.

“What struck me most was the inter-connectedness of our sisterhood beyond collegiate and alumnae chapters,” says Amy Pithan (Epsilon OmegaTexas A&M), an attendee at the Houston event. “For this day and all days, we are tied together through the generations.”

Reunions were in no shortage at the Atlanta event, bringing in sisters from 22 chapters.

Most notably, a high number of Georgia Tech (Iota Mu) and Clemson (Iota Rho) alumnae attended, making it especially meaningful for event chair Crista Cate Vasina (Delta GammaNorthern Colorado). She had served as extension team lead for both chapters.

“These events are an opportunity to get together with so many different chapters and age groups,” said Crista, who also is a former International President. “We come together to focus on the Original Ten with such a broad scope of alumnae.

It was also special that Georgia Tech collegians initiated their new members that very same morning.”

Gold Society Development Officer Jenn Barton (Theta Phi-Christopher Newport) felt the events were welcoming, friendly and a great opportunity to network with sisters. “Halfway through the event, we were all out of our chairs chatting and getting to know each other,” Jenn said.

“From the outside in, it looked like a recruitment party.”

Houston representing 29 chapters. Event chair Laura Davidson Ellett (Beta Delta-UCLA) was pleased to see so many surprise connections at the event.

“These events attract a group of women who are not advisors or volunteers and remind them of the bonds of Alpha Phi,” said Laura. “Several sisters saw women they know from another volunteer activity or their professional life. They might not have even known they were part of Alpha Phi.” The New York City Founders’ Day event brought together Alpha Phis from 23 chapters.

Sisters mingled over food and great conversation. “For me, the most meaningful thing about the celebration of Founders’ Day is connection,” said Mary Beth Cooleen Tully (Epsilon Psi-Lehigh), New York City event chair. “Founders’ Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on all of those who have come before us to create the organization we know and love today.”

A highlight for Missy Wagasy (Beta Beta-Michigan State), director of special campaigns and programs for Alpha Phi Foundation, was witnessing a special professional connection form between sisters.

“I met a young woman who had just graduated this past spring and was looking for a job in public relations,” said Missy.

“I connected her with one of our Gold Society donors also in attendance. The recent graduate just got an internship through this connection!”

Festivities wrapped up with Founders’ Day events in Chicago and Evanston. Women from more than 30 chapters attended as the Foundation celebrated the official launch of its new Alpha Phi history book: Alpha Phi International Fraternity: The First Fifty Years (1872-1922), Union Hand in Hand, authored by Jenny Thompson (Alpha LambdaAlumna Initiate).

The book is the first in a three-volume series documenting Alpha Phi’s history. Volume one was made possible in large part due to the generosity of Kathleen Feeney Hiemstra (Delta ThetaWestern Michigan), whose lead gift inspired others to invest in the project. (Read more about the history book on page 35.)

“It only seemed fitting to launch this publication on the occasion of Founders’ Day,” said Ann Brinkman Carstensen (Zeta Delta-Iowa State), Alpha Phi Foundation executive director.

“This book was four years in the making, and the Foundation and heritage committee were thrilled to launch it in the company of alumnae from as far as Florida, Ohio and California.”

The Founders’ Day celebrations not only connected attendees to our past, but also to current and future sisters. Special thanks to the chairs and additional volunteers who helped make all events a success!

Sister Named Top PR Pro

Young Alumna Receives Industry Accolades

Lindsey Scott (Gamma Alpha-San Diego State) is No. 42 in Business Insider’s 2013 PR 50: The Best Public Relations People in the Tech Industry listing as nominated by others in the industry.

Lindsey is vice president of LaunchSquad, a leading emerging technology public relations firm based in New York City.

Chantel Bonneau (Beta Delta-UCLA) was recognized by Northwestern Mutual-Los Angeles as the top college unit director in the country, the first female to achieve this in the firm’s history.

Chantel is a licensed financial planner and has worked for the company since graduating in 2010.

Collegian Madeline Clark (Omega-Texas) was crowned the El Paso, Texas, Sun Bowl Association 2013 Sun Queen.

Madeline is a junior marketing major, a mentor recruitment co-chair for Gateway Scholars and serves on the Women’s Business Council. She also is founder of Head to Toe charity, an organization that gathers warm clothing during the holiday season for local groups in need.

Sister Is Fulbright Scholar Natalie Forde (Iota AlphaPepperdine) was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany. Natalie majored in international studies and German.

She plans to research the implementation of Holocaust education in German schools as a potential model for improving Holocaust and genocide curriculum in schools worldwide.

Alumna Represents U.S. in Miss World Competition Olivia Thomas Jordan (Eta-Boston) was one of 127 contestants who competed in the 2013 Miss World competition (missworld.com) in September, representing the United States. During the fashion show portion of the event, Olivia was one of 10 finalists in the top model category.

Collegian Is Sun Queen

Alumna Leads P.E.O. Sisterhood Janet Miller Steury (Gamma Delta-Kansas) is 2013-14 president for the Missouri chapter of the P.E.O. (Philanthropic and Educational Organization) Sisterhood, representing 335 chapters and more than 13,000 members throughout the state. P.E.O. has assisted thousands of women by providing grants, loans and scholarships since the organization’s founding in 1869.

Sister Is Recognized with Industry Award Mary-Christine “M.C.” Sungaila (Kappa-Stanford) was honored by California Women Lawyers with the inaugural Judith Soley Lawyer as Citizen Award.

The award recognizes excellence in law practice, client counseling, mentoring and concurrent bar and community service. M.C. is an appellate partner at Snell & Wilmer in Los Angeles. She has received numerous other industry honors and was an Alpha Phi International FEW Award recipient in 2010.

Alumna Named to Board Diana Ruecker Thomé (Beta Rho-Washington State) was named to the executive board of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association. Diana is a veterinarian at Desert Veterinary Clinic (Richland, Wash.). She also volunteers for Alpha Phi International as scholarship advisor for Montana (Chi) and Washington State (Beta Rho) chapters and as programming and education advisor to Whitman (Beta Phi).

Alumna Is Woman of Distinction Adis Vila (Beta LambdaRollins) was honored by the Girl Scouts of Colorado as one of their 2013 Women of Distinction.

The award recognizes remarkable achievements as business, community and civic leaders dedicated to supporting leadership opportunities for girls. Throughout her award-winning career, Adis has served as a professor of international business and law, in senior roles for the U.S. government, managerial positions in business and higher education and as a practicing attorney. She became the U.S. Air Force Academy’s (USAFA) first chief diversity officer from 2010-13. The program she designed for the USAFA to expose cadets to a different national and organizational culture received a 2013 Innovations in Diversity Award from the Diversity Journal.

Sister Leads Local Club Leah Bennett Whitaker (Epsilon Xi-Southern Illinois) serves as president of the Edwardsville, Ill., MOMS (Moms Offering Moms Support) Club chapter.

She previously served as secretary for the group.

Alumna Named Fellow Veronica Farmer Wilbur (Epsilon Nu-Delaware) was named a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. The program recognizes nurse practitioner leaders who have made outstanding contributions to health care through clinical practice, research, education or policy. A limited number of nurse practitioners are selected for this highly coveted distinction each year. Veronica is associate professor and chair of Wilmington University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program and practices at Hockessin Walk-in Medical Care (Hockessin, Del.).

Alumna Receives Fulbright Grant Anaise Williams (Theta Kappa-Rochester) was awarded a 2013-14 Fulbright U.S. Student Grant to advance her studies, perform research and teach English abroad while serving as a young

BUSINESS Sister Organizes Unique Food Conference

Christie Blake (Beta Psi-San Jose State) organized a mobile food conference in Portland, Ore., in September that was touted as the world’s first conference dedicated solely to food carts. The conference featured a boot camp focused on starting and marketing a food cart business and an owner’s summit to share best practices. Christie is owner of Northwest Green Event Management (Portland, Ore.) and Food Carts Portland (foodcartsportland.com), a website dedicated to the city’s food cart culture.

Alumna Appointed COO Melissa Unemori Hampe (Delta-Cornell) was appointed as the first-ever chief operating officer for McAllister & Quinn, a government affairs and specialized grant consulting firm based in Washington, D.C. Melissa previously served as the firm’s senior vice president. She brings to her role 17 years of public policy experience working on Capitol Hill and in the private and nonprofit sectors.

Sister Is Creative Force Behind Social Enterprise Deirdre McGuigan (Zeta Iota-Virginia) is the creative director for Indego Africa (indegoafrica.org), a design-driven social enterprise connecting African women artisans with global markets and education. The organization partners with such companies as J.Crew, Nicole Miller and Anthropologie to sell the high quality and on-trend jewelry, accessories and home goods of their talented women artisans in stores and online. All profits go to business training and development programs.

Globe-winning Producer Jimmy Harry, this new group is an ensemble of singers, dancers and personalities.

Chase is also an actress who has appeared on television programs such as “Gilmore Girls” and “Judging Amy.”

Sister Named Artistic Director Laura Kepley (BetaNorthwestern) is the artistic director of Cleveland Play House (Cleveland, Ohio). Laura previously served as the organization’s interim artistic director and as associate artistic director. She has coordinated programming for CPH’s New Ground Theatre Festival since 2011. Laura is a Drama League fellow and a recipient of the 2009-11 National Endowment for the Arts/Theatre Communications Group Career Development Program for Directors.

Actress Joins National Tour Tiana Okoye (Beta Delta-UCLA) performed in the national tour of the musical “Sister Act,” playing Tina and singing as part of the ensemble. Tiana’s other recent credits include a Dynamite in “Hairspray” (Musical Theater West, Long Beach, Calif.) and Pilar in “Legally Blonde: The Musical” (Moonlight Stage Productions, California).

Alumna Receives Industry Certification Kristin Roberts Thomas (Epsilon Beta-Butler) has achieved the title of certified ROI professional by the ROI Institute.

ROI certification is the gold standard in building measurement and evaluation capability, and this designation identifies Kristin as a leader in the training and development industry with a professional advantage that few can match. To date, 3,000 individuals world-wide have achieved the designation. Kristin is a learning consultant for Skillsoft, specializing in strategy, management, implementation and value measurement.

THE ARTS Actress Lands Lead Role Emma Degerstedt (Beta Delta-UCLA) most recently played Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde: The Musical” at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).

In addition to other theater work, Emma has appeared in television shows and movies, including “Outside the Box,”“The Big Bang Theory” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

Sister Is Part of New Pop Group Chase O’Donnell (Gamma Beta-UC/Santa Barbara) was one of 11 women selected for a new pop group named Girl Radical (girlradical.com).

LEADERSHIP Alumna Leads Junior League Elizabeth “Liz” Moulter Brolick (Phi-Oklahoma) was named Junior League of Tulsa (Okla.) president for 2013-14.

ambassador to her host country, Bangladesh. The 2013 graduate was an honors anthropology major who minored in biology. With the grant, Anaise is conducting a study that she hopes will contribute to a reduction in the alarming incidence of maternal mortality and postpartum morbidity in Bangladesh.

Sister Holds Multiple League Roles Lora Tuley Brys (Theta Gamma-Truman State) serves in three leadership positions with the Junior League of Wichita (Kan.) for 201314. She is headquarters chair, solicitations steering committee secretary and publications advertising coordinator. Lora has also been active with Alpha Phi International for several years, including currently serving on the Foundation’s strategic planning committee and scholarship committee.

AUTHOR Columnist Publishes Book Marilyn Hansen Hagerty (Psi-South Dakota) is author of Grand Forks: A History of American Dining in 128 Reviews (Anthony Bourdain/Ecco, 2013. ISBN: 0062228897). The book features local restaurant reviews Marilyn wrote during her more than 50 years working for the Grand Forks Herald (North Dakota). Today, she continues to write five columns a week for the paper.

SPORTS Chef Hosts Television Program

Sheree Clark (Alpha LambdaAlumna Initiate) hosted “Fork in the Road with Sheree Clark,” a television program that ran on KCCI (Des Moines, Iowa) for 13 weeks. She interviewed guests, took “field trips,” gave advice and profiled healthy recipes. Sheree is a raw vegan chef, a holistic health and nutrition counselor and author. Her company, Fork in the Road (www.fork-road.com), helps empower individuals, families and corporate groups to get the most out of life by improving their health.

Alumna Is Sponsored Triathlete Hillary Lee (Iota GammaUniversity of the Pacific) has participated in Ironman competitions as part of the first ever X2 Performance Triathlon Team (x2performance.com), a group of 24 athletes chosen from across the U.S. When a shoulder injury forced Hillary to give up a competitive swimming career, she switched gears and began distance running. Now the health and fitness specialist is an Ironman.

Hollywood Phi Stephanie Herman (Epsilon Rho-UC/Davis) is vice president of casting for 20th Century Fox TV. She has been responsible for casting actors on numerous television programs, including “Modern Family” and “How I Met Your Mother.”

Athletes Participate in World Maccabiah Games Two Pennsylvania (Eta Iota) collegians represented the United States at the World Maccabiah Games, an international athletic competition for Jewish athletes, held in Isreal during summer 2013. Jackie Kates was on the U.S. women’s basketball team that won a gold medal, and Jennie Shulkin completed for the U.S. tennis team.

Jennie also participated in the Maccabiah Games in 2009 on the U.S. junior squash team, taking home a gold medal. Both women were state champions in high school and have received several recognitions in their respective sports.

Collegian Is Laker Girl Lizzi Ekstrom (Beta DeltaUCLA) is a member of the Los Angeles Laker Girls squad. Lizzi is a senior majoring in world arts and cultures with a focus in dance. This is her first year as a Laker Girl.

COL Prepares to Choose IEB Slate The committee on leadership (COL) is responsible for slating the International Executive Board (IEB) each biennium. It is the COL’s responsibility to ensure all qualified members are given equal consideration and that the process of selecting the next IEB is fair.

The members of the COL were actively engaged in soliciting referrals and applications throughout late summer and early fall.

The solicitation was based on the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for the next biennium. It was aimed at ensuring that IEB directors represent a balanced set of skills and are prepared to work cohesively in guiding and building the Fraternity over the next two years.

During the last few months, the COL reviewed applications, contacted references and began to solicit feedback from Alpha Phi’s membership.

Prior to slating weekend at the end of February, the members of the COL will conduct phone interviews with the candidates.

We’ve all seen it on television – a patient’s heart rate goes out of rhythm, and a doctor administers an electric shock to the chest to restore it to normal. In reality, this scene isn’t exclusive to television dramas. It is played out every day in hospitals, offices and homes around the world with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Colleges are microcosms of the community at large. As such, Alpha Phi International believes they should be prepared to prevent death and disability from sudden cardiac arrest among students, staff and visitors. This includes ensuring students are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). It also means ensuring AEDs are strategically placed in chapter houses and on campuses.

TWO SISTERS’ LIFESAVING STORIES

Nancy Callan Mauger (Gamma Kappa-CSU/Long Beach) was in her mid 60s when doctors shocked her heart back into regular rhythm.

She had woken up earlier that morning and noticed her heart was beating a little faster than normal. She tried to relax but it got progressively worse through the day.

“I called my doctor who told me to come in,” says Nancy. “When I got there, he did an electrocardiogram (EKG) test and told me I needed to go to the hospital. He asked if I could walk there if he and Ralph, my husband, accompanied me. I knew I couldn’t – even though it was directly across the street. Paramedics immediately transported me to the hospital.”

Once in the hospital, doctors determined that the fastest and safest way to get Nancy’s heart back into rhythm was to shock her using an AED. Her heart responded after only one try.

This wasn’t the first time that Nancy’s heartbeat was out of rhythm, though it was the first time she had to have an electric shock to stabilize it. “I was in my late 40s when the irregular heartbeat started,” shares Nancy. “At first, the episodes were about seven months apart.”

Shortly after the episodes started she was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF,

or also called A-fib), the most common type of arrhythmia or abnormal heart rate. When AF occurs, rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the heart’s two upper chambers (atria) to fibrillate, or contract very fast and irregularly. Blood isn’t pumped completely into the heart’s two lower chambers, and the heart’s upper and lower chambers don’t work together as they should.

Fifteen years after this diagnosis, Nancy found herself in the emergency room receiving an electric shock to the heart from an AED. The shock was a success, and she was able to return home the same day.

Nancy was fortunate to have had access to a life-saving AED that day in the emergency room. Today, she enjoys her daily routines, which include spending time with her husband and grandchildren, and credits her success to following her doctor’s instructions carefully. She continues to visit her cardiologist every three months for a check-up, and just this past fall received positive remarks during her latest resting echo and blood pressure tests.

Alexis White (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) has a similar story to share. Her experience takes place in the hospital and beyond – and ultimately ends with her living with an internal defibrillator today.

Would You Know How to Save a Life?

As a freshman in high school, Alexis started having frequent fainting spells.

“They just kept getting worse and worse.

I was passing out for up to 10 minutes at a time almost every other day,” she recalls.

“My mother took me to a cardiologist, and they tried different medications and different tests, but nothing was helping.”

When Alexis was 16, her doctors determined her heart problem was electrical and scheduled her for a cardiac ablation.

Cardiac ablation works by scarring or destroying tissue in the heart that triggers abnormal heart rhythm.

“When I was under anesthesia, the doctors said every time they would try to do something, my heart would just stop,” says Alexis. After only two hours of what was supposed to be an eight-hour surgery, Alexis’s doctors told her mother they couldn’t continue with the ablation, as the problem was different than what they initially thought.

Alexis’s doctors determined she would need a pacemaker defibrillator implanted in her chest. They didn’t think it was safe for her to leave the hospital without the device. “I had a portable defibrillator by my side at all times while I was in the hospital,” says Alexis. “Even when I was taken in a wheelchair to get x-rays, I would have one in my lap. I was shocked three times by an AED during that hospital stay.”

Two days after the procedure, Alexis was diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome, a potentially life threatening heart rhythm disorder. Brugada Syndrome, first described in 1992, is characterized by a specific abnormal heartbeat called a Brugada Sign, which is detected by an EKG. Brugada Syndrome is frequently an inherited condition. Alexis is the first in her family to be diagnosed, though her doctors determined later through blood tests that her mother has the partial gene and is a carrier.

Alexis reflects on what it is like to live with her pacemaker defibrillator today as a sophomore in college: “The device has made an impact on my life both physically and mentally. I enjoy running. Now I have to do it in moderation, alternating from walking to running.”

“This whole experience has shown me how short life really is, and how important it is to cherish the ones you love,” she says.

THE SHOCKING TRUTH

Executive Office CPR and AED Training Alpha Phi Foundation and Fraternity staff members participated in the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver® CPR AED Course at the Executive Office (EO) in October.

The two hour, video-based instructorled course included hands on training in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Each staff member in attendance received a two-year certification at the course’s completion. Throughout the class, individuals were prompted to respond to various cardiac emergency situations, and they were provided the tools and instructions to essentially save a life.

This training came weeks after the EO received an AED as a gift from a local donor. The AED is now properly mounted and accessible – with the majority of the staff empowered to act if need be. According to Foundation Executive Director Ann Brinkman Carstensen (Zeta Delta-Iowa State), “This gift is particularly fitting given our commitment to heart health.

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to absolutely anyone at any time. It’s important that public places – such as the Executive Office with its high volumes of volunteers, staff and visitors - are protected and prepared.”

While both Nancy and Alexis had time to visit their doctorsʹ offices and safely get to the hospital before an AED was needed, the reality is most patients need this treatment within minutes of experiencing the symptoms.

An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, which causes blood flow to the brain and other vital organs to stop.

Once someone goes into SCA, for each minute defibrillation is delayed, their chance of survival is reduced approximately 10 percent. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur at home, and an estimated 95 percent of people who have SCA die from it – most within minutes.

The average time for first responders to arrive on scene once 911 is called is 8-12 minutes.

According to the American Heart Association, waiting isn’t an option. It is imperative for individuals to be trained and prepared to act should the need strike.

The organization advocates having a strong Chain of Survival in place to improve a victim’s chances of recovery after a cardiac emergency. The adult Chain of Survival is a five-link process for rescuers to follow, which includes rapid defibrillation by AED (see page 13 sidebar).

AEDs are lightweight, battery-operated, portable devices that are easy to use. They analyze the heart’s rhythm and give the user voice prompts to let them know if and when to send a shock to the victim’s heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

They are available over the counter, without a prescription and are becoming more commonplace. The American Heart Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada support placing AEDs in targeted public areas such as sports arenas, gated communities, office complexes, doctorsʹ offices and shopping malls.

Combined with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of an AED may increase the likelihood of survival by 75 percent or more.

A CHANCE THESE SISTERS WON’T TAKE

Approximately 70 percent of Americans will feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they either don’t know how or their training has lapsed significantly. Two Alpha Phis share their stories and why they are in the 30 percent who are not only trained, but also prepared to help if faced with a cardiac emergency – no matter where it may happen.

Diane Gray Walters (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) lost her father to SCA in 1987 when she was only 28 years old.

She believes, “Dad would have likely been saved if his cardiac emergency had happened a few years later when AEDs became more commonplace.”

With her father’s tragedy as motivation, Diane says, “I immediately began searching for ways I could be equipped to try to save the life of someone like my dad.”

Within a year after her father passed away, she became certified for CPR for infants, children and adults and has maintained that certification since.

In 1999, she went on to become one of the first people outside of the medical profession in Raleigh, N.C., to be trained in CPR with AED certification. At the time she was working part-time at her church and says, “The Red Cross announced they would begin including AED training in their regular CPR course. With our church being large, they immediately purchased three AED machines to place at strategic points in the church facility. I was in the first group of 10 members to be trained in using the AED.” Diane hasn’t had to use her training yet, though she has come close. “This past year, two of my girlfriends, both under the age of 50, had cardiac issues that necessitated the use of AEDs,” shares Diane. “Neither of them had a history of heart problems.”

One friend felt extremely fatigued one day as she started her work day and left early to go home and rest. Before arriving home, she passed out while driving and totaled her car. Her injuries from the wreck

were minimal, but the first responders found her unconscious upon arrival. She was resuscitated three times by an AED on the way to the hospital. Within days, she was diagnosed with AF and was given a pacemaker without a defibrillator. Within two months, she almost passed out at work.

The AED in her office was readied as the ambulance was on the way, though it ended up not being needed. She ultimately had the original pacemaker removed and replaced by a pacemaker with a defibrillator. Today she is doing well.

Diane was in the office when her friend had her second episode at work.

“I positioned myself to help with the AED if needed and was happy that my brain was calmer and clearer than I normally am in stressful situations,” she says. “I believe that having gone through 11 CPR and AED certification processes prior to that gave me the confidence in my training. Each time it becomes more ‘second nature.’ I don’t intend to ever let my certification lapse.”

had been present, but I never want to take that chance again,” says Susan.

Within months after this tragic evening, Susan and her husband purchased an AED for their home. Their entire family has since been trained in CPR and the use of the AED so they will be prepared for any emergency.

Susan has also become very supportive of the placement of AEDs throughout her town in connection with the local American Red Cross.

Susan Bevan (SigmaWashington) has a defibrillator in her home. She and her husband host many events in their home for nonprofit organizations – up to 10 every year.

Susan hadn’t thought much about AEDs until one evening when they attended an event at another private home.

The evening was a small fundraising opportunity featuring a gifted violinist who was a personal friend of theirs. “We had hosted the exact same performer a couple of years before for the same purpose,” says Susan.

“On a clear spring evening, our beautiful, dear friend, Helen Armstrong, was playing an exquisite piece of music when she suddenly clutched her cherished violin and melted to the floor in the throes of a massive heart attack,” she recalls.

Tragically, Helen died as the audience watched doctors in attendance at the event perform CPR during the long wait for the ambulance to arrive. “We might never know if Helen could have been saved if an AED

Gamma Delta Sisters Reunite Reflections After 50 Years A 50-year reunion of UCLA (Beta Delta) sisters at a mountain home in Idyllwild, Calif., provided the opportunity to reflect on the value of a college education in the 1960s and the benefits of being an Alpha Phi during that time. According to Sharen Metz-Langdon, “Alpha Phi was the most meaningful experience of our young adulthood. It not only shaped our lives, but also the generations of our children to come.”

Fifty-five Kansas (Gamma Delta) alumnae from the graduating classes of 1975-79 spent a weekend in August in Overland Park, Kan., reconnecting and sharing Alpha Phi memories.

Even though Gamma Delta is no longer an active chapter, its alumnae still fondly and proudly uphold its memory.

A highlight of the weekend was a road trip to Lawrence, Kan., to tour the former chapter house and to have lunch and shop on Massachusetts Street.

Twelve Arizona (Beta Epsilon) alumnae enjoyed a reunion at the chapter house in September. The gathering came about because of a photo of Andrea Dutton-Frieson that appeared in the Spring 2013 Quarterly. When her sisters saw it, plans began for the reunion.

Housing Highlights

New Houses, New Homes

As Alpha Phi has continued to expand, our housing and facilities have also seen growth. Since August 2013, we have secured new housing for the chapter women at Utah (Beta Sigma) and Carnegie Mellon (Iota Sigma) and a new meeting space for collegians at Harvard (Iota Tau). Each of these new facilities is unique in size and structure based on the needs of the individual chapters.

In 2011, Alpha Phi recolonized its Beta Sigma chapter at the University of Utah.

After a challenging renovation – including dealing with a sinkhole – collegians moved into their 16-bed home on The Row near other Greek groups in September 2013. In addition to being completely remodeled, the space was expanded slightly to add a restroom and bedroom 20

that meets Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. This new chapter house is owned by Alpha Phi International’s National Housing Corporation and managed by a house corporation board made up of local volunteers and Beta Sigma alumnae.

The women at Carnegie Mellon (CMU) are now living in a 32-bed university-owned facility that saw a complete remodel of its basement to add a chapter room, television lounge and storage. Alpha Phi submitted an application to CMU and competed with other Greek groups for the opportunity to acquire this space. The house is wellpositioned on campus, nestled among the university’s other Greek facilities. This new, visible presence is helping integrate the chapter into the CMU community.

Since Harvard University does not

recognize Greek letter organizations, the chapter there is a member of the Cambridge Area Panhellenic. Alpha Phi joined Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta in this organization and is now settled into a leased meeting space in a prime location on Harvard Square. This gives chapter women a convenient site to gather close to campus. The leased space includes a large chapter room, a television lounge and a kitchenette.

Alpha Phi Recolonizes at Louisiana State University After interviewing more than 400 potential members, Alpha Phi made a splash at Louisiana State by selecting 200 new members! As of press time, Delta Tau colony has 240 outstanding new members, and the colony continues to COB impressive women.

Members from other Greek organizations lined West Lakeshore Drive in Baton Rouge from the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house to the University Press Building to cheer on our new members as they “ran down the row” – a Bid Day tradition at the university. Sisters were fortunate to be joined by LSU’s Vice Chancellor Kurt Keppler and Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students K.C. White. It was an honor that they were able to spend time with us to wish the colony luck in the future.

Next fall, Alpha Phis will reside on their own separate floor of on-campus housing. In the fall of 2015, the chapter will move into their temporary home at the renovated LSU Press Building on sorority row. Once the new house is completed, Alpha Phi will move into their permanent residence, to be located on sorority row!

A huge thank you goes to the members of Team Tigers and all of the volunteers who helped during colonization. The local Alpha Phi alumnae are an amazing support system for the colony!

With your ongoing support, every year at Alpha Phi Foundation proves to be filled with remarkable progress, and 2013 was no exception. It was a year of meaningful experiences and tremendous growth that allowed us to write another chapter in the success story of the organization.

This year’s performance in a nutshell: During fiscal year 2013, the Alpha Phi Foundation endowment not only reached, but far exceeded a milestone $10 million.

The endowment value at the end of the fiscal year was $11.1 million. Program support grew from $1.19 million in fiscal year 2012 to $1.55 million in fiscal year 2013, an increase of 30 percent year over year.

And we put those program dollars to work! A fourth session of the Emerging Leaders Institute was added to this summer program, training nearly 200 up-andcoming underclassmen in key leadership skills. Our funding of leadership training and educational programs led by Alpha Phi International Fraternity surpassed $500,000 – a 39 percent increase over the prior year and a milestone in our support of fraternal programming. We announced and awarded a newly endowed scholarship in honor of an extraordinary member, Linda Gardner Massie (Delta Alpha-East Carolina), who served as both International President and Foundation Chair. Linda’s scholarship benefits undergraduate women at our East Carolina (Delta Alpha) and Virginia Tech (Eta Omicron) chapters.

By December, our staff was at full capacity and welcomed two new positions – donor communications manager and executive administrative assistant – to help further our mission and better deliver on our new strategic plan. In February, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our Heart to Heart Grant with the presentation of two $50,000 awards – one to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Tallahassee, Fla., and the other to Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas.

Through our Red Dress program, our collegiate chapters set yet another record in their philanthropy efforts by raising an unprecedented $1.7 million for the Foundation. We expanded our accessibility to donors and friends with the launch of a new mobile website. Alpha Phi Foundation is one of only two National Panhellenic Conference Foundations to offer such a tool to its supporters. At the end of the

fiscal year, we not only met but exceeded a $30,000 challenge gift from Kathleen Feeney Hiemstra (Delta Theta-Western Michigan) to fund the first of a threevolume history book project designed to celebrate Alpha Phi’s rich history through our 150th anniversary in 2022. Authored by Jenny Thompson (Alpha Lambda-Alumna Initiate), the first volume was officially launched around Founders’ Day in October 2013.

We also witnessed a number of events that shook the lives of our members, from Hurricane Sandy and the Oklahoma tornadoes to the Boston Marathon bombings and Colorado fires. Because of the generosity of our donors, we were able to help those Alpha Phi members impacted by these life-altering situations through our Forget Me Not Fund.

The next chapter for Alpha Phi Foundation is even more promising than the last. In February 2014, we will train every collegiate member across North America in Hands-Only™ CPR through a new partnership with the American Heart Association, completely funded by the Foundation. Additionally, the new year will include a new leadership program designed for upperclassmen and their transition to careers, the launch of Clara’s Circle – a new individual giving program for collegiate members, an enhanced planned giving program, a fundraising initiative to add a defibrillator to every Alpha Phi chapter facility, a 50 percent increase in the value of our Heart to Heart Grant and the 10th anniversary celebration of our Red Dress fundraising program.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without the generous contributions of our donors, the leadership of our board of directors, the dedication of our staff and the passion of others who care deeply about Alpha Phi International. We extend our profound gratitude to every one of you for all you continue to do and give to ensure a bright future for our beloved Fraternity.

Take Heart. Take Part.

Alpha Phi Foundation Partners with American Heart Association to Deliver CPR Training to Collegians Across North America Every five years, the American Heart Association (AHA) publishes updated guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency cardiovascular care. These guidelines reflect a thorough review of current science by international experts. The 2010 guidelines reported that in studies of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, adults who received HandsOnly™ CPR from a bystander were more likely to survive than those who didn’t receive any type of CPR. In other studies, survival rates of adults with cardiac arrest treated by people who weren’t healthcare professionals were similar with either Hands-Only™ CPR or conventional CPR. Fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from someone nearby.

Among bystanders interviewed, reports said panic was the major obstacle to performing CPR. According to the AHA, the simpler Hands-Only™ technique would help overcome that panic and hesitation to act.

Alpha Phi Foundation is partnering with the American Heart Association to do its part to build confidence among more community members by training all Alpha Phi collegiate members across North America this February in this life-saving skill. That’s nearly 20,000 young women!

“The more people trained in CPR, the more lifesavers we have in our communities who can act as first responders when citizens go into cardiac arrest,” said Ann Brinkman Carstensen (Zeta Delta-Iowa State), executive director of Alpha Phi Foundation. “For 57 years, Alpha Phi Foundation has been committed to improving women’s heart health. Take Heart. Take Part. is a unique opportunity to further our impact and save more lives.”

The Foundation is proudly funding 100 percent of this program, including CPR kits, marketing materials, facilitator guides and a special gift for every participant.

Local Alpha Phi alumnae will be trained to facilitate via webinars to lead the sessions.

America will hold a CPR training session during the month of February.

This program was piloted with great success in November 2013 at UCLA (Beta Delta), UC/Irvine (Eta Kappa), Loyola Marymount (Zeta Beta) and USC (Beta Pi) collegiate chapters.

WHY HANDS-ONLY™ CPR?

Because 88 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home, and 92 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital. By performing CPR, someone’s chance of survival can double – even triple.

If no CPR is given, brain death occurs within four to six minutes.

When an adult suddenly collapses with cardiac arrest, their lungs and blood contain enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for the first few minutes. Consider when you hold your breath while floating in a pool.

Most people can hold their breath for quite a while, as long as they are not moving.

Another reason breaths may not be needed during the first minutes after collapse is a person in cardiac arrest needs less oxygen than a person who is not in cardiac arrest.

For these reasons, the most important thing a bystander can do for a person in sudden cardiac arrest is to pump blood to the brain and to the heart muscle, delivering the oxygen that still remains in the lungs and blood.

WHY THE AHA?

The American Heart Assocation has provided CPR training for more than 50 years. The organization currently trains more than 14 million individuals in CPR each year, 95-97 percent of whom are medical professionals. AHA is now calling on all citizens to learn how to perform Hands-Only™ CPR, and Alpha Phi Foundation is excited to play an important role in this movement.

For Collegians Only: Clara’s Circle Founders’ Day 2013 was extra special!

Alpha Phi Foundation unveiled the first of a three-volume series documenting Alpha Phi’s rich history. Volume one is titled Alpha Phi International Fraternity: The First Fifty Years (1872-1922), Union Hand in Hand.

Author Jenny Thompson (Alpha LambdaAlumna Initiate) beautifully describes the Founders’ and other early members’ hard work, commitment to education, and desire to connect with and support other women. She introduces readers to stories that are both familiar and new, and describes in detail the affairs of the time that impacted our members … like resistance to coeducation and earning the right to vote.

This March as we celebrate Women’s History Month, we can be proud our Founders were among the first women admitted to Syracuse University. And while their circumstances were lonely and uncertain at times, they were brave and mature beyond their years and determined to make a place for themselves and for other women in the world.

Burdette and the others could bear witness to our achievements generations later, we like to think they would be proud of the women who followed in their footsteps and pleased with the progress Alpha Phi has made. They would be joyful we live in a society today where women are encouraged to learn, contribute and lead. They would be honored their vision has not only been realized, but is thriving every day in chapters, on campuses and in communities across North America.

We are grateful to Jenny, who spent tireless hours researching, writing, editing, gathering photos and guiding the production of this book. Jenny has a Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Maryland. Her expertise, writing style and genuine interest in women’s history made the stories of Alpha Phi’s first 50 years come to life like a modern novel.

Jenny’s work was supported by the women who serve on the Foundation heritage committee. Their collective and vast knowledge of the Fraternity, from years of volunteering and service in many

A Beta Beta alumna has offered a generous challenge: she will match every dollar donated up to $50,000. Projects include new furnishings, replacement of French door windows, installation of a fire sprinkler system and kitchen renovation.
