The name of this magazine (Sable and Or) was chosen to highlight the unique and special connection that we have as Brothers in this what I believe is the preeminent Fraternity in the World. As a Chapter, we have done our best to enhance our connections with each other while simultaneously serving our communities. The wonderful and varied activities and initiatives and Brothers leading those efforts must be documented. This organ is the vehicle for that to happen during this time and period. I hope that within this issue, you find something that you connect with to enhance yourself as we all strive to be our greatest self!

Fraternally,

Dr. Avery Kenly, 39th President

Is the House Secure?

By. Bro. Anthony Myles Davis

This is a question we often hear at any closed fraternal gathering. We look to the Sergeant-at-Arms to ensure that the business of Alpha is protected and Secure. Once confirmed a sense of calm is established and the business continues. The call to secure “The House” goes far beyond the confinement of a meeting. As brothers we have the individual responsibility of securing the “House” by taking a selfassessment of our commitment to the fraternity’s aims, goals, and the life-long oath that was taken upon our initiation.

We must posture ourselves to be the example of a distinguished man of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. When the founders persisted to create this organization it would consist of men of culture, high caliber and character. Therefore, those who seek membership must fully understand it is not only a privilege but a responsibility to being a member of our illustrious Fraternity.

As years swiftly pass we must remain vigilant in protecting Alpha from external challenges as well as internal missteps. We must be vested and invested in the core foundation of what Alpha represents: Brotherhood, Integrity, and Service.

There must be an unwavering loyalty to the fraternity and the protection of its legacy. We must have a heartsearching examination of our individual contribution to protecting the House and hold ourselves accountable to the truest values of the fraternity. Simply ask yourself: “Have I done all I can to protect and live up to my oath?”

In a 1982 publication, Brother Moses General Miles wrote, “Each Alpha is a good man, an honest man, a worthy man, and a knowledgeable man… Just remember when better men are made, Alpha will make them."

Once we became members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. we were granted guardianship. Therefore, every Brother must seriously understand his role to protect and hold high the name of Alpha in all of his interactions. Always reflect on the words of our Fraternity’s prayer.

“O Lord, may the true spirit of the fraternity rule our hearts, guide our thoughts and control our lives, so that we may become through Thee servants of all.” Brother we must adhere to the aims of our beloved fraternity to ensure the “House” will always be secure.
