the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. While no one could predict what would come from 2020, Alpha Gamma Rho brothers proved that, no matter the strain, they would come together (virtually) and demonstrate the irrefutable bonds of brotherhood. Bonds that shone through masks worn on campuses as the Fraternity came together to surpass anticipated setbacks, recovering quickly from difficulties. 2020 afforded new opportunities for Alpha Gamma Rho to grow in its vision and operation. Although we may have been apart for the majority of the year, there is no denying the strength and resilience that resides within this Fraternity.

Studies show that collegiate members who participate in giving programs benefit in a number of ways. First, they are more actively involved. Additionally, they continue to give as alumni in celebration and support of future collegiate members. With the decline of donors participating in philanthropic outlets across the nation, we need to increase our donor activity, starting as early as possible, for our Fraternity’s legacy.

Thoughts from our Board Members “This past year was like none other. For everyone, it was a lifetime event. At the outset, there was tremendous uncertainty and, understandably, a great deal of speculation. Some in the Foundation world even thought it was insensitive to ask donors to make contributions during a pandemic. AGR stuck to its program recognizing that, in uncertain times like 2020, money for scholarships, leadership training, etc. was more important than ever. Our brothers responded. Gifts to the Foundation in calendar year, 2020 were astounding compared to the prior year. Our chapters benefited. That’s resilience. That’s AGR!” ~Bill Boehm
“Brothers, we can no longer take for granted our right to associate and fulfill our Purpose, to Make Better Men and through it a broader and better agriculture. It will take all of us working together to secure the next 55 years of Alpha Gamma Rho. Your Educational Foundation will not stand still until all 71 chapters have the resources needed to accomplish our Purpose. I am proud to be able to play a small part in providing the resources it will take in making it happen.” ~Donald De Jong
“AGR has made a significant impact on my professional and personal life. Sara and I take great pleasure in giving back to AGR as a down payment on that debt. If AGR has impacted your life in the same way, then please join us in supporting the Educational Foundation.” ~Al Johnson
“ It is during these times, even more so now than ever, for brothers everywhere to step up and help fulfill our Purpose to Make Better Men. These young men will be the future leaders of our chapters, our communities and our country..” ~Glenn Stith
“I’m particularly pleased, during the turmoil of the pandemic, to see us maintain the giving levels to our annual Loyalty Fund. This is a critical source of funding for the Fraternity’s support to the development of undergraduate brothers and chapters. It shows the steadfast commitment of brothers across the country and the hard work of the Fraternity’s staff. ” ~Jim Borel
“The hiring of a world class development officer (with a full year under her belt) with the energy, passion and ideas to pull and push the Foundation Board to greater heights. The increasing number of donors has been particularly impressive. The COVID pandemic has upended the entire economy and culture yet the commitment from alumni and collegiate members to Make Better Men has never been stronger.” ~John Noble

The Capacity To Succeed In Difficult Times by Carol Johnson, Chief Development Officer
When I think about the last “normal” months, before the pandemic changed the way we all do business, I recall special visits with the AGR brotherhood: a tailgate function in Fargo, North Dakota, Leadership Seminars in St. Louis, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland, an alumni reunion in Phoenix, Arizona, and an Ag Symposium in Manhattan, Kansas. At each function, AGR brothers gathered and celebrated brotherhood, agriculture, and leadership. And through each celebration, the strength of the Fraternity has shown “While agriculture to be a motivating force of AGR’s Fraternal Purpose of “Making Better Men”.
continues to be the backbone of our nation, members strive to broaden and better the agricultural industry, even when society may not fully acknowledge its importance.”
Alpha Gamma Rho is strong because of YOU; each of your brothers are the better men of our society, the toughest by far. While agriculture continues to be the backbone of our nation, members strive to broaden and better the agricultural industry, even when society may not fully acknowledge its importance. All during the pandemic, this brotherhood has continued to show toughness in adapting and maintaining a strong leadership that serves. From March until the end of 2020, I saw Alpha Gamma Rho’s resilience each day. From a development vantage point, our annual fund surpassed all historical amounts raised in 2019, and in 2020 we continued that progression, raising $459,788. This total surpassed the largest annual fund historically achieved by the AGR brotherhood! To recognize this was achieved in 2020 is a major feat, while other development shops around the nation saw losses.
We also raised the third highest historical year of overall funds, despite the fact there were not as many housing campaigns on the books. Over $2 million was raised for chapters nationwide. Additionally, a feasibility study was done to determine the Educational Foundation’s ability to conduct a capital campaign, which you are sure to hear more about in the years to come. We are embarking upon action that will change the trajectory of the Fraternity —the work of YOUR Educational Foundation is not something that will make an impact for the next 60 days, 60 months, but rather the next 60 years! Your resilience and support will continue to be greatly appreciated!

From the Recipients “The scholarship from Alpha Gamma Rho has helped lift a financial burden. It has allowed me to further my education at the University of Florida, where I continue to strive for success in my academics and play an active role on campus. Since many have done so much for me, I try to give back and remain involved within the university, Fraternity, and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). I was recently Noble Ruler and have held two other positions within the chapter. In CALS, I serve as an ambassador, treasurer for the Agricultural and Life Sciences College Council and vice president for Collegiate Farm Bureau. As for the University, I am a member of the Florida Blue Key, a leadership honorary, and the executive secretary for Satellite Affairs. All of this would not be possible without the support from not only friends and family, but especially the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. I am a witness to the impacts our alumni’s contributions have on the collegiate brothers. This organization has pushed me to prosper and grow socially and professionally. I am proud to represent Alpha Gamma Rho and will continue to Make Better Men for the rest of my life.” – Cameron Stake, Florida,
Gene Swackhamer Ag Economics/Ag Business Scholarhsip recipient “Going into college I knew I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. Both of my parents were involved in Greek life, so the question for me was not if, but which fraternity I should join. After numerous conversations with my parents, prayer, and selfreflection, I decided to accept my bid to join Alpha Gamma Rho. Currently in my second semester of my sophomore year, I know this was one of the best decisions of my life because of the brotherhood rooted in agriculture, life-long connections, and countless memories. AGR has afforded to me a multitude of opportunities I otherwise would never have known about, along with priceless experiences. AGR has prepared me for future endeavors by helping me learn about important organizations on campus and promoting my own academic success. I am currently an Agribusiness student with a Pre-Med option. My end goal is to attend medical school and then return to Northwest Oklahoma to serve rural communities in the area. Through my scholarship from The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho, I have been able to continue my dream of attending college debt free. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of the AGR brotherhood, and I am excited to continue to strive to give back to this Fraternity, which has already given so much to me.” – Traber Smithson, Oklahoma State,
Bill Sallee Scholarship Recipient
I started college at the University of Arkansas in fall 2018 majoring in agricultural business pre-law and crop sciences. When I started, I wanted to join a fraternity. My father, Blake Swears, is an alumnus of the Alpha Iota Chapter, sparking my interest in Alpha Gamma Rho. I noticed from the start that Alpha Gamma Rho is where I want to call home. I went on later that semester to become VNR-Recruitment for the chapter. In November 2019, I was elected to serve as Noble Ruler. No one would have expected that the world would shut down in March. Through the dedication of the executive team and advisers, Dan Robinson and Todd Martin, we were able to overcome the challenges of COVID-19. Finishing out my term in November 2020, I was elected as Vice President of Finance for the University of Arkansas Interfraternity Council. The connections I have made in Alpha Gamma Rho have led me to serve in other leadership positions such as Associated Student Government Senate Parliamentarian, Agriculture Future of America Ambassador, Bumpers’ College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences Ambassador, Collegiate Farm Bureau Director of Business Relations, and VNR Operations & Management for the Alpha Iota Chapter. I am proud of opportunities, such as this one that never would have been possible without being a brother in Alpha Gamma Rho. – Caleb Swears, Arkansas, Undergraduate
Achievement Award Recipient
Chapter Strategic Planning Sessions
Chapter Strategic Planning Sessions, professionally facilitated by past Grand President Zane Akins help chapters identify needs and create goals that contribute to the successful future of their chapter and the Fraternity. Each chapter develops a useful strategic plan to guide the next one to five year(s) on their campus. Brother Akins’ strategy during the sessions is to engage, challenge and keep everyone on track. He feels it is important to let the chapter discuss their issues and have them make decisions on what strategy and actions they want for successful chapter operations. While 2020 did not allow these planning sessions to be held in person, the virtual option became a necessity. The ability to continue to challenge brothers to grow within their chapter, despite hardships, is one that will leave a lasting impression. It is highly encouraged that chapters take advantage of this opportunity to grow the bonds of brotherhood stronger by having a thoughtful and thorough stregic plan.
How to Set Up a Chapter Strategic Planning Session 1. Determine a date for the session. 2. Send an email to Executive Assistant, Becky Haley, becky@alphagammarho.org to schedule the dates for your Chapter Strategic Planning Session OR 2. Chapter Adviser, Housemother and House Director Engagment Chapter Advisers, Housemothers, and House Directors play an integral part in the development of our collegiate members. These adult leaders are mentors, coaches, and advocates for our chapters and the AGR Fraternity experience. Our Advisers across the nation have been engaging with their collegiate members to keep focus on their academics and chapter operations. Our Housemothers and Directors have continued to provide a guiding hand to our members, keeping them grounded through the new reality around them. Additionally, our Regional Vice Presidents have been leveraging their connections with Advisers, alumni leaders, and AGR supporters in their region to keep all groups informed on Fraternity activities, resources and engagement opportunities. While the Leadership Seminars in February 2020 was the last time many of our Advisers and Housemothers were able to interact and learn from one another, this has not stopped their ability to access resources and communication to do their role effectively. Whether it was interactions with the National Fraternity or participating in interfraternal activities from groups like the North-American Interfraternity Conference or CSL Management, Advisers and Housemothers have been able to access a variety of educational offerings. Each expands their knowledge of the Greek community and teaches the importance of being flexible in their position. Specifically, for our Advisers, we look forward to once again hosting in-person Adviser Forums. Until that time, the Fraternity is diligently working to adapt the topics covered during a Forum into a virtual setting. By providing ever-present, positive support, our Chapter Advisers, Housemothers, and Directors spark a resilient mindset among our undergraduate members, which helps inspire them with the necessary confidence to persevere through any situation.
2020 Leadership Seminars O w n Yo u r Wo r l d
Designed as an individual leadership development event, the goals of the Leadership Seminars are to provide each attendee with the ability to network with their peers, learn new skills, and assess their own personal strengths. Throughout the month of February, our 2020 Facilitator team logged countless miles traveling to St. Louis, to Reno, to Atlanta, and to Baltimore engaging with over 750 AGR and Sigma Alpha members. Neither the participants nor the Facilitators would have ever anticipated that these would be the last events Alpha Gamma Rho would host in person before the pandemic interrupted our lives. With the theme of “Own Your World,” the seminars tested the participants to think critically about how they can positively impact their surroundings, encourage their fellow fraternity brothers or sorority sisters to remain engaged with their chapter, and to continually strive for self-improvement. During the various educational sessions, attendees were presented with challenges to overcome using team collaboration while bolstering one’s self confidence to become an impactful leader. While the primary focus of Leadership Seminars is for our collegiate members, this event is a great personal development opportunity for our Facilitators. When asked to reflect on their experiences, each provided their unique perspective on how the seminars have stretched their speaking abilities as well as content creation and presentation skills. University of Kentucky graduate and Omicron Chapter alumnus, Taylor Nash, said, “Being a Facilitator gave me an opportunity to impact the future of hundreds of undergraduates, establish my lifelong engagement as an alumni member, and gave me the confidence for the next steps in life.”

From In-Person to Virtual:
Recruiting AGR’s Next Members Each year, Alpha Gamma Rho works collaboratively with PhiredUp (a company specialized in recruitment, growth, and retention within the Greek industry) to host two Recruitment Schools. From start to finish, attendees actively learn the fundamentals of recruitment, set goals specific to their chapter on how to approach prospective new members, identify potential barriers, and successfully extend bids for membership. Any collegiate member elected to serve as the VNR of Recruitment, serves on the chapter’s recruitment committee, or who has an interest in helping the chapter recruit new members is encouraged to attend a Recruitment School. While the pandemic prevented the Fraternity from hosting two in-person events in 2020, January’s Recruitment School saw collegiate attendees from 17 chapters and representatives from our SUNY Cobleskill Colony. Each group of undergraduates was able to eagerly work together to set new goals for the upcoming year. When campuses began closing in March, spring recruitment initiatives and preparations for summer recruitment came to an abrupt halt. Many chapters were left asking, “How do we move forward with recruitment?” Alpha Gamma Rho took steps to further extend its partnership with PhiredUp by providing all collegiate members, Chapter Advisers and other volunteers engaged with chapter recruitment efforts access to PhiredUp’s digital classroom. Through their platform, brothers are able to learn many of the same key concepts taught during a traditional Recruitment School, with an additional emphasis on how to engage with prospective new members in virtual settings. Since introducing PhiredUp’s Certified Recruiter program, a third of AGR’s chapters have become Certified Recruiters. Our members have demonstrated true resilience to keep the AGR name relevant on their campuses by applying the same learned recruitment fundamentals into actionable results. The Fraternity continues to be committed to helping each chapter responsibly grow their collegiate membership while retaining its current members through strategic recruitment tactics. It is never too late to become a Certified Recruiter today!

Sayre Grants Brother William ‘Bill’ Sayre understood that the AGR Brotherhood has an important life-long impact on Alpha Gamma Rho brothers. The Sayre Fund was established when Brother Sayre provided gifts to the Educational Foundation specifically to promote inter-chapter relations and cooperation. Simply put, the vision of Brother Sayre was to give chapters the opportunity to come together through social, educational and leadership activities, designed to further sow the seeds of fraternalism. Chapters can submit a Sayre Fund proposal through the AGR website under the Foundation section. All proposal forms are due annually on October 1. Events supported by the Sayre Fund have included the AGR National BBQ competition, the AGR booth at the National Farm and Machinery Show, the Fraternity’s involvement with National FFA Convention and many other worthwhile events. Cultivating a greater strength of brotherhood is of even greater importance as uncertainy still looms. Brothers, both alumni and undergraduate, should look for ways to engage with others across the community and the country. With a greater understanding of the technology at our finger tips, now is the best time to take advantage of what the Sayre Grant has to offer! Apply today, connect with brothers tomorrow.

Housing Resources Trust
AGR’s Housing Resources Trust Board (HRT) developed a program to help chapters defer the cost for acquiring professional assessments of chapter houses. HRT Trustees help perform assessments that cover everything from immediate needs to long-term planning. These individuals recognize industry trends and understand AGR’s housing needs.
HRT Housing Assessment
An in-depth, professional look at the overall “health” of the chapter house and property. HRT Trustees identified a small group of companies who have broad experience and serve states in which our chapters are located. The HRT Board will match one-third of the assessment costs up to a total of $6,000. After the assessment, the chapter will be able to plan the best approach for improving their chapter house. For more information, please contact Executive Assistant, Becky Haley, at (816)891-9200 ext. 117 or becky@alphagammarho.org 2020 Growth Report | 23
Commitment to the Future Alpha Gamma Chapter’s Road to a Successful Housing Campaign Nestled in Gainesville near the University of Florida campus, the Alpha Gamma Chapter house sat since 1975. The brick house with Greek letters and a plow on the front wall was home to hundreds of Alpha Gamma Rho brothers, but, as Brother Bernie Lester notes, its architecture was constantly causing problems. With the growing need for updates, Alpha Gamma Chapter alumni decided to start their first attempt at a housing campaign. This first campaign didn’t make it far, however. With a rough real estate market and a lack of commitment, the practicality of a housing campaign couldn’t be identified. But three years ago, the need for a new chapter house was re-identified and the current housing campaign was started. The new chapter house is in the process of being built with a completion goal of August 2021, so undergraduate brothers can move in for the school year. The excitement for an up- to- date home for brothers, is overwhelming. Upgraded appliances, electronics and overall architecture will provide a higher quality experience for brothers living in the house. Alpha Gamma Brother Bernie Lester has been directly involved with the chapter’s housing campaign and says commitment is key to ensuring a successful campaign. In this second, successful, campaign, the Alumni Board chose to utilize a consultant, which has helped with the organization and plan development, but it’s the commitment from all brothers that matters most. The group also determined it was best to have The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho and their housing association manage the campaign, allowing for tax deductible contributions to be made to the Foundation and a stronger ability to manage the record keeping from Home Office Staff. Accepting some of the work onto the housing association’s plate has enabled funds to be utilized quickly, but does require more work and commitment from brothers. Without the assistance of The Educational Foundation, the need for record keeping and greater communication falls back on volunteers. The Educational Foundation and Home Office staff work closely with chapters and alumni corporations through chapter assistance programs, to ensure a stronger campaign for the chapter. Chief Development Officer Carol Johnson said, “The Alpha Gamma Chapter has been a pleasure to work with, and we have ramped up our support levels to make sure they feel the same way—a practice we are implementing with all housing campaigns. With the most advantageous campaign structures, transparent communications, and simple fund establishment and disbursement practices, we are working hard to meet the Fraternity’s housing needs.” Brother Lester encourages all those considering starting a housing campaign to consider what’s best for your chapter and be prepared to hit some roadblocks. Some brothers were difficult to contact of because of address or phone number changes that were not updated, and others strongly supported the new chapter house being built but didn’t always support financially. As the new chapter house is reaching completion, the biggest takeaway is the need for commitment. Commitment from brothers in the form of both time and treasure is what leads to a successful housing campaign, which in turn can provide a strong chapter experience for undergraduate brothers to come.

Fraternal Heritage & Legacy The Story of Russell “Doc” Hardin If you have a conversation with Russell ‘Doc’ Hardin, you can immediately identify him as a part of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity’s heritage and legacy. Doc turned 100 in 2020, and as part of his celebration he shared his love for Alpha Gamma Rho and his brotherhood. Doc also shared his love for agriculture and how his life was forever shaped by his educational experiences. As a young child, Doc aspired to be a vet, but it wasn’t until he was able to enroll at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1939 that he started his venture by studying animal sciences. While at Purdue, Hardin served as the football captain and the Vice Noble Ruler of Membership Development for the Delta Chapter, and he has many fond memories of the Fraternity. Doc also shared that his uncle and brother were both AGRs, and he had to wait on his brother to finish school before he could attend. Having been raised in the Great Depression, he recalls the only income for the family came from milking their 20 head of cattle, a chore which he began at age 9. Upon completing his degree in 1942, Hardin was drafted into the Army and was sent to Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas for his basic training prior to being stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. It was then that Hardin was called to do something more. He recalls “a four star general” requesting a meeting with him, which made him very apprehensive. That anxiety was quickly replaced with joy as the opportunity arose for him to be sent to Kansas State University for vet school. At the time, the United States needed vets and according to his educational transcripts the government was able to identify him as a candidate. When accepting the offer, Hardin saluted the General with both hands. While at Kansas State, Hardin played for the Wildcats. After a big win against the Jayhawks, Hardin was recruited to play pro football for the Detroit Lions for $300 a game. He passed and “turned himself into the town veterinarian” for Lebanon, Indiana, where he had grown up. Hardin looks back fondly and says that he wouldn’t change a thing, especially being involved in Alpha Gamma Rho. That is why he has been a supporter since the 70’s and has made a planned gift to The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho, continuing to believe in the Legacy that he leaves. Russell “Doc” Hardin is “Alpha Gamma Rho through and through!” 2020 Growth Report | 37

Investment Committee Report by Bill Boehm, Chair
What a year 2020 turned out to be! Making the “right” investment decisions for your investment portfolio was a challenge to be sure. That said, the Investment Committee worked closely with its financial advisor and weathered the storm. Patience paid off as an approximate 25% equity market decline in March triggered by the pandemic was followed by a somewhat unexpected 45% recovery from mid March until year-end. For the year, the Foundation investment portfolio gained a very competitive 13.5%. The Foundation investment pool totaled about $11.25 million on December 31, 2020. Approximately 70% of the money is restricted for use by named chapters. These 100 funds support chapter specific leadership, scholarship or housing projects. The remaining 30% of the money is the result of National Fraternity fundraising for projects like the Sayre Fund, the Gene Lemon Fund, AGRConnect and Educational Foundation scholarships. The investment portfolio is diversified. Approximately 55% of the portfolio is invested in US based equities, 16% is invested with firms in non-US developed nations and another 4% is invested in Emerging Market equities. Approximately 15% is invested in traditional Fixed Income instruments. The remaining 10% is invested in Alternatives. Asset allocation decisions are informed by the investment advice of the Merrill Lynch Chief Investment Officer. The Investment Committee follows the tactical recommendations of that office and judges itself against a policy allocation that changes infrequently. I will close with a request that all AGR brothers should commit to more aggressively use the resources of the Foundation. Too often chapters fail to use the allowable 4% annual payout from the restricted funds. Too few undergraduate brothers apply for the local and Educational Foundation scholarships that are available. Too few chapters and alumni apply for the awards that are provided by the Sayre Fund to facilitate multi-chapter learning activities. As a Foundation donor I am comfortable with the management of the investment pool. But the real value will only be found if we leverage those dollars to help “Make Better Men!”

No Matter What, Keep Moving Forward! (or just take the next step)
by Rex Martin, CEO
By the time you receive this, it may still be winter. Which means depending on your locale, cold temperatures and long dark nights potentially with some snow and ice on the ground. As I look outside my window, this is exactly what I see. Now, I like to ski and snowmobile but short days that seem to be cloudy with no end in sight are not my favorite. 2020 seemed to take on some of those characteristics well before winter for most of us. It was a year of social separation away from friends and loved ones along with the cancellation of the events we enjoy. It can be hard to be resilient given our present situation. But, even with this around us, our Alpha Gamma Rho brothers never lost faith, and continued to look toward better days while trying to give our undergraduate men the very best experience a college fraternity “Our values chapter could offer; albeit sometimes on Zoom. No matter what, keep moving forward! Your Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho showed that type of positive attitude and spirit. There were great plans set forth that will (I assure you) begin to make a significant difference in our chapters. Records in annual donations were set in our Loyalty Fund. AGR brothers continued in the highest numbers ever to remember our men in a planned gift. New endowments were established, and existing ones continue to help our men thrive in school. Your generosity to the Foundation continues to shine bright even though it was a difficult year for all. Housing, scholarship, and leadership needs continue to be met. Each brother showed that, no matter what, keep moving forward! There are great things in store for our brothers through Your Educational Foundation in 2021. I look forward to potentially a summer and a new school year that we can see each other and enjoy our brotherhood in a manner it deserves. This past year will make us appreciate those gatherings even more. I hope to be at some of those events and thank you personally. Brotherhood is not cancelled, and it never will be.
keep us bound together and drawn closer when times get rough. It is during these times, that I am the proudest of our brotherhood.”
Alpha Gamma Rho has endured wars, pandemics, and economic downturns throughout history, and we still stand strong. Our values keep us bound together and drawn closer when times get rough. It is during these times, that I am the proudest of our brotherhood. Sometimes, resilience is found by taking just that next step. Albert Einstein once wrote, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and the Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho are here helping provide that balance for all brothers. AGR was there as you became a member, and both remain as a bulwark throughout your life. Please continue to keep our new undergraduate members in your prayers, thoughts and gifts. We thank you so much for all each of you do. Because…No matter what, AGR keeps moving forward! 58 | Resilience
