Showing our gratitude to you, our donors, is of the utmost importance to us. And, it’s much more than a handshake or a handwritten thank you note. “Thank you” are words we want every donor to hear, but we also strive to provide evident impact made by your dollars through transparency and consistency. It’s making sure your financial donation appropriately represents your legacy. Each year the Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho produces a Growth Report of accomplishments. This issue of the Growth Report should really be a statement of gratitude for it is far more than just a list of monetary donations. Because of your generosity, the brotherhood of Alpha Gamma Rho are truly being made better men! Members are better leaders prepared for a professional network because of our Leadership Seminars. Chapters are growing in numbers and attracting stronger members because of our Recruitment Schools. We see more members attending high quality events hosted by chapters across the nation, where we are able to better provide for our members and promote AGR’s Purpose. How We Work For You

The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho is a not-for-profit corporation funded by voluntary contributions and investment income. The business purpose of the Foundation is to receive and invest contributed property and to distribute such property to qualifying organizations or persons for charitable, educational. These charitable and educational purposes include the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States Internal Revenue Law). Organized in 1965, The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho operates as a tax-exempt, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and public charity under the laws of the State of Illinois. The employer identification number is 36-6158409.

What We’ve Accomplished

In the 2018-19 fiscal year, change came through The Educational Foundation, and with it, an elevation of what was acheived. While rebounding from the absence of a development officer for over 6 months of the fiscal year and looking for ways to be more donor centric, the decision was made to change the giving year from the fiscal year (July-June) to the calendar year (January- December). This change will be refelcteed throughout this Growth Report.

Additionally implementing a new Record of Estate Intention makes it easier for alumni to plan gifts that will continue to elevate Alpha Gamma Rho.

The theme of this year’s Growth Report is aptly named “Elevate”.

Indeed, thanks to your incredible generosity along with a dedicated Board of Directors supported by a passionate and highly qualified staff we have been elevating the impact Your Foundation is having on our continuing quest to Make Better Men. To put it in perspective, since 2006 AGR brothers and friends have donated over $24 million to the Educational Foundation for special funds such as donor directed endowments to benefit specific chapters, national scholarship awards, internships, the Sayre Fund to support collaborative chapter activities and numerous Chapter Assistance funds to support local housing initiatives. And, we are adding new donor directed funds each year as more and more brothers see the Foundation as THE preferred source for setting up, directing and managing funds according to their specific wishes.

Additionally, unrestricted annual Loyalty Fund contributions continued to grow in 2018-2019 with a record number of donors and an all-time high in giving, exceeding $500K dollars for the first time in our Foundation’s history! These funds are used to offset operational costs of the Foundation, make Educational Grants to the Fraternity for leadership programming for chapter officers and emerging leaders, Recruitment Schools as well as Housemother/House Director and Adviser trainining. All of which have a direct impact on chapter excellence by enhancing the personal and professional growth of our collegiate members.

This year we hired our new Chief Development Officer, Carol Johnson. Carol has a rich personal history with AGR having family members in the Fraternity and herself having been a Sweetheart at the Arkansas State University chapter. Carol brings many years of experience in non-profit development work, a strong affinity for AGR, a passionate belief in its Purpose and boundless energy to this critically important role. We are truly excited to have her on our team!

I’ve been the Chair of YOUR Foundation Investment Committee for the past 13 years. We’ve experienced some rough spots along the way, like the nearly 50% decline in the Dow from October 2007 - March 2008. And, we’ve experienced some good times, like the almost steady market advance over the past ten years. Your investments have generated an approximate 7% compound annual investment return from 2006 - 2019. Not bad, all things considered and, as it’s on par with most University and most Greek Foundations. We didn’t achieve that return by accident. The Foundation portfolio is quite diversified. The actual investing decisions are made by professional money managers with oversight by the Investment Committee. Our goal is, and has been, to protect and grow the corpus so a steady stream of payments can be made available to help you Make Better Men. Back in January 2007, we started with about $2 million dollars in the Foundation investment pool. Today, that number is $9.3 million. Where did all that money come from?

Precise numbers are tough to come by but here’s my take on the answer to the question. Market returns account for about $3 million of the increase (that’s the 7% compound return). Your Foundation has made payments of about $3 million along the way for scholarships, and as reimbursement for undergraduates, Advisers, Alumni Boards and Housemothers/House Directors others attending Leadership Seminars, National Conventions and other educational programs. The difference, about $7 million, is the growth in contributions. Our investment management decisions and growing contributions from loyal AGRs have taken us to the point where payments from the restricted funds, mostly chapter specific, dedicated accounts, now total about $400,000 a year!

Elevate our Past Achievements while preparing for an Exciting Future On my second year in serving your Educational Foundation, I wanted to look back on the accomplishments but to also look ahead of the many changes we have made to improve our transparency and communications. These improvements will prepare us to do great things for AGR in the future.

We had an amazing past 12 months with many record setting months of donations which culminated in a blowout Giving Tuesday of over $50,000! Thank you for entrusting us with your gifts to help Make Better Men. But, there were so many activities behind the scene that helped improve our Foundation’s work such as implementing a new database software, streamlining and improving our accountability on recordkeeping, along with new mailings, emails and social media posts to show your dollars at work. One of the biggest changes is the addition of a new Chief Development Officer who has extensive experience in fundraising which has elevated the bar of our professional platform. Carol has brought a sense of purpose, commitment and enthusiasm to the role.

I also want to say a quick word of thanks for all our staff who work tirelessly on behalf of the Educational Foundation. We are also so blessed to have amazing AGR volunteer leadership who roll up their sleeves to help our men. They do so with a drive and passion unmatched by any organization. This includes especially our Foundation Board and their willingness to lead and embrace change. I am fortunate to work with all these great brother s.

Between our staff, along with our important volunteer leaders, we have canvassed the nation talking to many Collegiate members and alumni about what is important to our Fraternity while celebrating some amazing achievements right beside you. I loved spending time out in California learning about the diversity of agriculture. Going to ribbon cuttings to look at new or improved housing at the University of Kentucky and Tarleton State University. Speaking at Founder’s Day events at North Carolina State and Illinois. Along with tailgating at my home chapter at the University of Arkansas. As diverse as that travel seems, there is a commonality to all of

it – promoting and living our Values and Purpose. This has continued to remain strong for 115 years and much of that can be attributed to your generous donations and efforts at the local and national level. Our educational offerings could not exist without you. To put it directly, there are some collegiate brothers who would not have the financial means to come back to college without your help.

Now, enough about looking back... You know what they say, it is okay to look back but just don’t get caught staring. We must look forward to growing, sharing and enhancing our collegiate brothers experience. If you believe everything you see in news, it would be easy to dismiss the Greek experience and maybe think otherwise about helping. There is so much divisiveness and negativity toward being in a fraternity. However, I see all the positive things our men do such as raising money for important charities, holding leadership positions on campus, having some of the highest grades and promoting values that we hold so dear. I am so fortunate I get to see these positive activities almost every day of the year. It really touches my heart, when I hear an alumnus talk so fondly about how AGR is one of the top experiences of his life. It has made him who he is today. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who helped us grow as brothers.

With that said, we also owe it to our present and future generations of AGRs to have that same life changing experience. So, it starts with me, and it starts with you. What are we going to do to help in 2020? Let’s Elevate our game and help change a person’s life.

We look forward to elevating our communication, our educational offerings, internships, bring more scholarships and housing projects to you and our collegiate brothers. Helping Chapters Help Themselves

Through non-designated gifts, the Foundation is able to assist the National Fraternity with projects which serve the needs of multiple chapters. With support from these gifts, the National Fraternity assembles programs that individual chapters could not efficiently do alone. All Alpha Gamma Rho chapters who take advantage of the National Fraternity’s opportunities and resources benefit from non-designated gifts to the Loyalty Fund.

Foundation Scholarships Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho Scholarship applications are due annually on April 30 and awarded each fall. In 2019, 16 AGR brothers were awarded scholarships by The Educational Foundation. Chapter Strategic Planning Sessions

Chapter Strategic Planning Sessions, professionally facilitated by Past Grand President Zane Akins help chapters get motivated and create goals that contribute to the successful future of the Fraternity. Each chapter develops a useful strategic plan to guide the next 1-5 year(s) on their campus.

Akins’ strategy during the sessions is to engage, challenge, and keep everyone on track. He feels it is important to let the chapter discuss their issues openly and have them make decisions on what strategy and actions they want to follow.

Having conducted well over 100 chapter planning sessions for Alpha Gamma Rho, there is no doubt Zane Akins has elevated the success of many chapters and AGR brothers.

Leadership Seminars:

Creating Agents for Change Throughout the month of February, members of both Alpha Gamma Rho and Sigma Alpha had the opportunity to become true Agents for Change to impact their chapters, campuses and communities. Through their active participation in a robust set of sessions each phase of the Seminar was designed to keep the attendees’ attention from beginning to end. Developed as an individual leader development program, the direction of the Leadership Seminars is to give each attendee the ability to assess their personal strengths, learn new skills and expand their network among their peers.

Sessions focused on how to build consensus with those around you, tools to diffuse situations when conflict arises, understand how one’s emotional intelligence affects decisions being made and the importance of being innovative when a task doesn’t have a clear road map. By the end of the Seminar, every member created a personal mission plan to take back home to help enact change.

Attendees also had the ability to interact with and learn from both AGR and Sigma Alpha’s Corporate Partners about future internship and employments opportunities. Additionally, alumni leaders participated and collaboratively learned from their collegiate counterparts while encouraging attendees to step outside their comfort zone. During the Awards Luncheon our Grand President’s Award and Spirit of Ruth Award recipients actively embraced the theme and challenged collegiate members to see both organizations beyond their campus and to actively pursue ways to remain engaged beyond their undergraduate years. Our Facilitator team delivered impactful programming leaving all who experienced the Leadership Seminars energized to create lasting changes for themselves, their chapters and their organization.

Recruitment School:

Recruiting our Next Members Hosted in Kansas City twice yearly (in January and March), Alpha Gamma Rho has developed a collaborative relationship with Phired Up, a company specialized in the recruitment and growth of fraternities and sororities, to conduct a hands-on workshop to improve and refine the way chapters are recruiting prospective new members. For nearly 15 years, along with the help of Home Office staff members and volunteers, Phired Up’s Owner Josh Orendi has taken attendees from start to finish on how to approach prospective new members through recruitment strategies, address any potential concerns and successfully extend bids for membership. Any collegiate member in the chapter who either holds the VNR Recruitment office position, serves on the chapter’s recruitment committee, or has a genuine interest helping recruit new members is encouraged to attend the Recruitment School. Additionally, Chapter Advisers and alumni leaders are invited to participate alongside their collegiate brothers to help their chapter set new goals and challenge traditional recruitment tactics in order to achieve the best results. While Recruitment Schools are not a required event for chapters to attend, year-overyear, the Fraternity consistently interacts with over 150 of its members throughout both event offerings.

Newly integrated into Recruitment Schools, attendees are also afforded the opportunity to enjoy a dinner reception hosted by an agricultural group in the Kansas City area and network with industry leaders and AGR alumni. This gives our members the ability to network with their brothers, listen through a panel discussion on how the Fraternity has impacted their lives personally and professionally and promote brotherhood among our members. Because of the impact of Recruitment Schools and active coaching on best practices on the importance of quality control, our organization has been able to measure consistent membership growth trends among our chapters who attend.

Adviser Forum:

Coaching our Advisers Facilitated by AGR’s Adviser Forum Coordinator, Tim Heiller shares practical, first-hand experiences Advisers face in their role. Whether an Adviser has been in their role for six months or six years, there is something new to be learned by each participant.

“Every Adviser should attend a Forum on a regular basis, because it keeps us [Advisers] up to date on Fraternity standards and policies while sharping our skills to engage with our collegiate leaders,” remarked one previous attendee.

Adviser Forums is the educational program is it today because of the foresight and commitment of Past Grand President Kirby Barrick. Thank you, Kirby, for investing in AGR’s alumni leaders and providing Advisers an outlet to learn from their peers.

Housemothers and House Directors

In an apartment located behind a Jewelry and Gift store in a small rural farming community in Iowa is where my story pretty much begins. I graduated from High School, moved to Nebraska to attend Peru State College, and graduated with a Family, Home & Consumer degree and added a Social Work degree to my diploma before moving to Lincoln.

Fast forward to 2007 and you would find me in Lincoln embarking into a new position filled with completely new and foreign concepts. I was asked to mail in a resume to Alpha Gamma Rho Kappa Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as its Housemother.

Following my interview, I was asked to accept the position and I am now in my 12th year of one of the most rewarding and amazing positions I have held.

Each year, I glean more knowledge of agriculture. I have become a sponge as I listen to the young men explain and inform me of their particular area of expertise. Their willingness to share begins conversations that enlighten me. I find I want to know more about the young AGR brothers, their goals and how they plan to implement what they have studied at UNL after their degree has been accomplished.

When I was approached about becoming the new Housemother/Director Coordinator this fall, I realized I would enjoy sharing and working beside others in the Housemother/Director positions. Designated Endowment Funds can include achievement awards to chapter members who accomplish academic, leadership, and/or citizenship achievements, educational and/or leadership grants for expenses not covered from other sources for chapter officers or members, Chapter Advisers, Housemothers/Directors, and other alumni leadersof the Alumni Association to attend Leadership Seminars, and other educational and/or leadership events sponsored by Alpha Gamma Rho. Designated Endowment Funds can also be used for grants to purchase technology upgrades to be used for educational purposes, grants to purchase educational and/or leadership materials and services for appropriate educational activities, and grants of funds for scholarships at the university for members and potential members.

The Chapter Assistance Program is offered by The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho to assist alumni corporations in providing educational facilities in major construction or renovation projects for chapters. Basics of a Successful Housing Campaign 1

Discuss Chapter Housing Assessment, project needs, estimated budget, Chapter Assistance Program details, engaging campaign volunteers, and campaign consultant selection.

Establish a Foundation Housing Fund with a minimum of $25,000 deposit and conduct a campaign feasibility study to determine potential for campaign success.

Housing Resources Trust

AGR’s Housing Resources Trust Board (HRT) developed a program to help chapters defer the cost for acquiring professional assessments of chapter houses. HRT Trustees help perform assessments that cover everything from immediate needs to long-term planning. These individuals recognize industry trends and understand AGR’s housing needs.

HRT Housing Assessment

An in-depth, professional look at the overall “health” of the chapter house and property. HRT Trustees identified a small group of companies who have board experience and serve states in which our chapters are located. The HRT Board will match one-third of the cost for assessments up to a total of $6,000. After the assessment, the chapter will be able to plan the best approach for improving their chapter house.

Sayre Grants

Brother William ‘Bill’ Sayre understood that AGR Brotherhood has an important life-long impact on Alpha Gamma Rho Brothers.

The Sayre Fund was established when Brother Sayre provided gifts to the Foundation specifically to promote inter-chapter relations and cooperation. Chapters can submit a Sayre Fund proposal through the AGR website under the Foundation section.

All proposal forms are due annually on October 1. Events supported by the Sayre Fund include the AGR National BBQ competition, the AGR booth at the National Farm and Machinery Show, and the Fraternity’s involvement with National FFA Convention.

First AGR Fall Shoout Out a Success in the Northeast On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in September, collegiate brothers, alumni and friends kicked off the 1st Alpha Gamma Rho Fall Shootout in Eastern Pennsylvania. The event was held at Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays, a 5-star rated sporting clays facility located on 130-acres of an old mining quarry complete with 17 stations.

In total, 38 brothers participated, ate, and tested their shooting ability with fellow AGR’s from the Northeast. Clays zipped in and out of the trees, sailed from across the quarry, hopped along the ground and kept us guessing where the next one would appear. Targets were thrown as singles, report pairs (the second target launched at the sound of the first gun shot), or simultaneous pairs (both targets thrown at the same time). SUNY- Cobleskill Colony member, Jesse Platt was the champion shooter, hitting an amazing 88 out of 100 targets!

“I started this event because at a recent AGR Leadership Seminar I attended, I learned that there were over 500 AGRs within 50 miles of Philadelphia,” said Brother Adam Manwarren, newly appointed Regional Vice President for the Northeast. “I have lived in this area for 10 years and I didn’t know a single one of them. In the end, I enjoyed watching the undergraduates from different chapters who held the same officer roles share ideas casually and learning that a couple of the area alumni from different chapters connected after learning they lived within 10-15

minutes of one another for the past 12+ years.”

In total, brothers from 10 different chapters and one colony across HOW TO APPLY FOR A SAYRE GRANT: the country were represented. The feedback from the event exceeded Complete and submit the Sayre Grant Proposal on the AGR everyone’s expectations. Carter 1 website under the Foundation tab Hoffman (SUNY – Cobleskill) (https://www.alphagammarho.org/sayre-project-proposal) said “… thank you again for giving us the opportunity to be in that 2 Submit your application for the next school year shootout. Everybody had a blast before October 1. and more are excited to attend it next year.” The 2nd Fall Shootout is already being planned for next September or early October, pending facility availability and area football schedules.

This event was made possible by a Sayre Grant and more than $2,000 was raised to benefit The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho. Manwarren says, “The shootout exemplifies exactly what Bill Sayre put the Sayre Grant program together for—to help regions host brotherhood events where brothers come together for fellowship and promotion of the Fraternity.”

AGR’S INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT PROCESS includes both the Investment Policy Council (which

sets the investment policy) and the Investment Committee (which is charged to implement the policy and make investment decisions). The Investment Committee meets at least four times a year. They retain professional investment management expertise which they use to review performance, evaluate investment managers and evaluate alternative investment approaches.

On a regular basis, the Foundation Treasurer and Finance Committee reviews the cash needs of the Foundation.

This past year, it was determined that such a significant amount of cash could be better invested in the long term investment pool. Thus, the reduction in cash.

Continue to Elevate Let’s flashback in time to 1992. A small-town farm girl in her freshman year at Arkansas State University is walking down the hallway of the Agricultural Studies Building. Currently a state FFA officer, she’s known for her love of showing livestock. She’s approached by the Dean and a fellow ag student who invites her to help show the university’s livestock at an annual “International” show. The fellow ag student happened to be the Noble Ruler of the Beta Epsilon Chapter and that day, a young Carol Johnson began to see that college was about making friends and networking in addition to having academic success. It was that one experience with the best men on campus that gave me a true sense of belonging — one where I gained my best college friends. I tell people all the time that the better men of AGR’s Beta Epsilon Chapter made the better me that stands here today!

Now back to 2020, here I am living the dream of promoting a broader and better agriculture and the Purpose of Making Better Men at Alpha Gamma Rho from the fundraising and development platform! I could not be more thankful for this opportunity and the coupled experiences. AGRs across the nation have graciously welcomed me to various events, continually encouraged my efforts with phone calls, emails, letters, and supported our various giving initiatives throughout the year. I could not be more grateful!

We’ve made a lot of changes during the first year. I have written and re-written policy, operating procedures, and collateral with your guidance. I have implemented some new programs for giving, accompanied by developing and facilitating a strategy catapulting the way we all recognize fundraising for the Educational Foundation. And, we have met and exceeded some pretty solid pre-set goals! But we’re just getting started. The new decade will be filled with even more new ideas and movement as I plan for us to outdo our efforts year over year! My number one focus every day is to serve you in the most effective and efficient manner I possibly can to educate and promote fundraising across the Fraternity, implement and execute a strategy increasing donations that benefit AGR’s Purpose, and become a benchmark for which other fraternities operate.

The year 2019 has given us a lot of work to celebrate as a Fraternity!

We saw a record number of members initiated, and we saw an accompanying elevation of collegiate involvement in development this year. We took our annual collegiate giving from 43 to 639, with five chapters at 100 percent participation! We also acquired more new donors in general than in any year in AGR’s history, and our number of donors and gifts exceeded the largest number ever recorded in a 12-month timeframe. Additionally, we celebrated the highest year of giving to our annual fund, the Loyalty Fund, which supports our Leadership Seminars, Recruitment Schools, Housemother Trainings, and Adviser Forums (all of which I attended and saw firsthand the benefits AGR members receive from each). We had the highest level of giving in four of the 12 calendar months, which attributed to our highest levels of giving! This shows an increase of support for our brotherhood, and inevitably led to the largest year of giving in AGR history!

As I look forward to 2020, I reflect upon this past year as being one that will always be life changing. Across the country, from the coasts of California showcasing avocado and spinach farms, through mountain ranges hosting dairies in New York, along the A1A of Florida’s coastline near where oranges and cattle are grown, to walking between potato and beet rows and into snowy ranges in Idaho, to driving dirt roads along a fence line on a cattle farm in Kansas, to watching the ponies run in Kentucky, and of course, appreciating nature throughout my home state of Arkansas, I have been able to see agriculture at its finest. Additionally, while attending a barbeque competition in Tennessee, tailgate functions and shooting competitions in Pennsylvania, Founders’ Days and Pink Rose Formals from California to Florida, and a concert in North Carolina, I have been able to meet the finest and best men across our nation thanks to this Fraternity. Becoming the Chief Development Officer for the Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho is genuinely an honor — I cannot wait to see what we accomplish in the many years of service to come! It sure sounds great to be able to report all of the large numbers, but more than a formal financial presentation, the greatness occurs as a result of donors’ investments — you truly are Making Better Men!
