Jason Grady

Sam Watson

A native of Chanute, Kansas, Jason Grady joined the Alpha Zeta Chapter at Kansas State University in 1996. After earning his Bachelor of Science in animal science and industry in 1999, he went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State in 2003. In 2005, Grady returned to Kansas State’s College of Veterinary Medicine to pursue advanced training in equine internal medicine. During his three year residency training, he also obtained a Master’s Degree in clinical sciences. Now, he has returned to Kansas State’s College of Veterinary Medicine as a clinical instructor in equine reproduction and field service.

Grady currently serves as livestock project leader for the local 4-H club, a member of the Kansas State’s Ag Alumni Board, vice chair of his church council, and he helps coach one of his daughters’ softball teams. He also coordinates the Kansas FFA Association Veterinary Science Career Development Event at the State FFA contest. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Alpha Zeta Chapter Alumni Association since 2007.

Grady helped to implement and install the Alpha Zeta Professionals Program, which officially launched in 2016.

Sam Watson was raised on the family farm in southern Georgia. He earned his Associate’s Degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Georgia majoring in Agricultural Education. While at UGA, Watson was initiated into Alpha Eta Chapter in 2000.

In 2012, Watson was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives to represent House District 172 which includes portions of Colquitt, Tift and Thomas counties in southern Georgia. He also currently serves as the Rural Caucus Chairman, member of the Agriculture Committee, Vice Chair Subcommittee of Appropriations Economic Development, Vice Chair Transportation Committee, Vice Chair Natural Resources and Environment Committee, Vice Chair Special Rules Committee, Secretary of Retirement Committee, and member of the Ways & Means Committee.

Watson is a politician and a full-time farmer.

He owns and operates Chill C Farms Partnership, LLC which is a vegetable growing, shipping, and packing operation. He also has a small cow/calf operation on the family farm.

Outside of his community, Watson served as Past President of the UGA Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity Alumni Board, is a member of the Georgia Agribusiness Council and the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association.

While accepting his award at the 2017 Leadership Seminar in Nashville, Watson compared the House of Representative to the Brotherhood of Alpha Gamma Rho. “AGR taught me to respect others, trust others, build relationships, agree to disagree and move on,” Watson said, “I use all of those qualities under the Gold Dome every day.”

Will Wittler

Wittler was initiated into Kappa Chapter at the University of Nebraska in the fall of 1995. He graduated in 1999 with dual majors of Agricultural Business and Ag-Economics. After years of working in the agriculture financial service industry, Wittler has opened his own financial planning practice in his hometown of Talmage, NE. In 2015 he and his father, also an AGR, merged their businesses and now practice together serving farmers and ranchers. Currently, Wittler is an elected Board Member of the Community Memorial Hospital, a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician for the Talmage Rescue Squad and Secretary, Treasurer and Project Manager for their replacement fire hall project. Other organizations include Rotary Club, Sunday School Teacher of Faith Lutheran Church, Activities Chair for Boy Scout Pack #337, and coaching Syracuse Parks & Recreation teams.

As an undergraduate, Wittler was a founding member of the Kappa Foundation. In 2000, he joined the Kappa Alumni Board and served as both the Foundation & Alumni Board Secretary and Treasurer until October of 2013.

Whittler was also part of the task force that conceptualized, fundraised and built the new chapter house on UNL’s campus that opened in the fall of 2013.

Jeremy Zweiacker, a native of Pawnee, Oklahoma, was initiated into Pi Chapter at Oklahoma State University in the fall of 1995.

In the fall of 1999, he received his Bachelor’s in Agriculture Economics. After five years in enrollment management at Oklahoma State and 10 years with the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education he joined Meridian Technology Center as Executive Director, Planning and Operations. Zweiacker has been successful in his philanthropic endeavors including working with the Boy Scouts of America, Stillwater Area United Way, 4-H and FFA. Service to AGR and the Greek system at OSU has been a cornerstone for Zweiacker since his time as an undergraduate. After graduation, he built the first Pi Chapter website and started an electronic newsletter that he continues to send to alumni. He has served as President of the Board of Directors for Pi Chapter, chair of the Pi Fund advisory committee, and assisted with the construction of the Pi Chapter Campaign of the Century. He also currently serves the Home Office as a contributing editor for the Sickle and Sheaf.

Zweiacker feels brothers have many outlets to stay involved in AGR after graduation.

During his speech at the 2017 Leadership Seminar in Milwaukee, WI, he mentioned staying up to date with the Home Office, attending Chapter Events, or just stopping by to visit a Chapter house can make a big impact. “There are no ends to the ways you can play a part,” said Zweiacker, “and you will never regret it.”

FFA ALUMNI LEGACY GRANT Do you know of a high school without a local FFA Alumni Chapter?

The FFA Alumni Legacy Grant was developed by the 2015-16 National FFA Officer Team. It can be used to create an FFA Alumni Chapter, improve the quality of existing FFA Alumni Chapters or to provide for more partnership opportunities between local high school FFA chapters and Alumni Chapters. Check out FFA.org/alumni for more information.

OFFICER ELECTIONS Multiple chapters have required completion of Officer Modules as a pre-requisite to run for that particular Office.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eta Chapter (Iowa State) has developed a monetary rewards program called the Legacy Fund. Members may complete modules within Foundation in Personal Finance to receive additional credit toward receiving one of the achievement grants, created through their Legacy Fund.

Challenge Accepted THIS YEAR ALPHA GAMMA RHO, ALONG WITH THE CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP OF SIGMA ALPHA SORORITY, WAS EXCITED TO ONCE AGAIN PROVIDE FOUR REGIONALLY HELD LEADERSHIP SEMINARS FOR MEMBERS TO FURTHER ENHANCE THEIR PERSONAL CAPACITY FOR LEADERSHIP. THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF

February, our Facilitators traveled from Nashville to Reno, Washington, D.C. to Milwaukee encouraging attendees to accept the 2017 Total Leader Challenge through their active participation in a robust set of sessions each designed to keep their attention from beginning to end.

Many participants attended with the vision of enhancing their own personal leadership abilities. When asked ‘why you attended this year’s Leadership Seminar’ through our evaluation survey there were many answers: “…To gain information on how to become a better leader in my personal life, the community, and in my AGR chapter.”

“…To gain new ideas for my chapter and to further develop myself as president [of my chapter].”

In the “Leveraging our Strengths” session, participants learned how to hone in on their unique leadership skills while also learning to recognize and appreciate their strengths.

“Collaborate to Conquer” taught attendees the importance of remaining involved past their collegiate years, and to encourage active alumni participation. On Saturday attendees practiced the art of continually encouraging members in the “Celebrating the Wins” session, and the importance of timeless chapter functions meant to build the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood through the “Recharging Traditions” session. Attendees were eager to learn a little more from each session;

“I wanted to go to all of them!,” one participant shared.

In addition to building our members leadership skills, the seminar also focused on strengthening the need to be advocates for the agricultural industry, which AGR and Sigma Alpha both represent. Through our “Building Your Core” breakfast, participants developed their core knowledge about the industry and how to engage those around them. One of our attendees mentioned “it was nice that the [Leadership Seminar] wasn’t just about leadership in our sorority/fraternity, but also was about agricultural leadership and some of the issues we face as agriculturalists.”

By the conclusion of the Leadership Seminar, attendees were tasked with creating a challenge to take back to their respective chapters, to put their goal into action, and to encourage their fellow brothers and sisters to “Accept the Challenge” as one team.

This year, Leadership Seminars saw an elevated sense of energy and the Leadership Seminar Steering Committee looks forward to heightening the level of excitement and engagement with future seminars. The Steering Committee is comprised jointly of representatives from both Sigma Alpha and AGR, with brother John Tarpley (Alpha Kappa- Tennessee- Knoxville) serving as the Chairman.

We encourage any alumnus who has experience as a group leadership facilitator to consider applying to be a Leadership Seminar Facilitator; it is a once in a lifetime experience to engage with a broad array of AGR brothers and Sigma Alpha members from across the country!

Jordan Gaal is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was initiated into Iota chapter in September 2014. He recently finished his 2016 term as the Noble Ruler and currently serves as the house Historian. Brother Gaal is studying Life Sciences Communication with a focus in agricultural, food strategic and mass communication. At UW-Madison, Jordan serves on the schoolwide student council and plays an active role in student government. He also serves as the Membership Chair for the National Agri-Marketing Association student chapter at UW. Jordan’s long-term career goals include working in corporate communications and public relations in the food, agriculture, or biotechnology industries.

Jacob Mattingly is a junior at the University of Kentucky. He was initiated into the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho in the spring of 2015. He served as the Noble Ruler for Omicron in 2016 and is currently serving as the VNR-Recruitment Chair. Brother Mattingly is an Agriculture Economics major with a minor in Plant Soil Science. At the University of Kentucky, he is heavily involved in Block & Bridle as well as serves as a peer mentor for the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment.

Brother Mattingly’s longterm career goal is to be a sales representative within the agriculture industry.

Michael Poggemiller is a junior at Iowa State University and was initiated into Eta chapter in August 2014. He served the Iowa State University Interfraternity Council as the Vice President of Public Relations in 2016 and currently serves as the IFC President for the 2017 year. Brother Poggemiller is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business. At ISU, Michael is involved as an Ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and served as a State Vice President for the Iowa FFA Association. His future plans include going into sales within the agricultural industry, as well as returning to the family farm in southeastern Iowa.

Tyler Richardson is currently a junior at Northwest Missouri State University.

He was initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter in February 2015 and has served the Chapter as VNR-Recruitment, VNR-Membership Development, and IFC Vice President of Judicial affairs.

Richardson is a dual major in Agronomy & Agriculture Business. He enjoys staying involved on the Northwest Missouri State campus and serves as an Agriculture Ambassador for the NWMSU School of Agriculture.

Richardson is involved in an Agronomy Club on campus and plans to enter the field of Agronomy as a seed salesman or field agronomist. “I’d like to help farmers throughout the Midwest make decisions to help them improve their operations and meet the growing production needs of U.S. agriculture,” said Richardson.

Past Grand President Warren Nichols began the 1992 Convention discussing the guiding values from the fall of 1904, when Alpha Gamma Rho came into existence. “These values were enumerated as honest, good, unselfish, hardworking, earnest, and proud,” Nichols stated. “We have designed a program to reinforce these values for AGR; this is called the Brotherhood Program.”

review and input process, Alpha Gamma Rho amended the Constitution and changed the future of the Fraternity. In 1991, the National Board of Directors, with constitutional authority, amended the constitution to adopt the Brotherhood Program and eliminate pledging. An attempt to turn back the program at the 1992 Nashville Convention failed.

Today, more than half of all AGR Brothers have not experienced any form of pledging. As a result, most of Alpha Gamma Rho Chapters have eliminated hazing, reduced risk on their campuses, and gained respect within their communities. While there is still work to do to completely transform into a lifelong learning development program, the Brotherhood Program is a success in the eyes of Alpha Gamma Rho. But, the path to this point was not an easy one.

Today, more than half of all AGR Brothers have not experienced any form of pledging.

Warren Nichols, Kansas State, served as Grand President from 1990 to 1992. He recalls the controversial climate back in 1992, as the Brotherhood Program was brought to the floor at the 40th National Convention.

“The four parameters of the Brotherhood Program are: No more pledging; if it is required of a freshman, it must be required of a senior; No more dominant-subservient relationships; rewards must be based on objective criteria and not encourage class division,” Nichols said as he opened up discussion during the second business session of the Convention in 1992.

The implementation of the Brotherhood Program intimidated some, but Nichols had never fled from change. “In fact,” Nichols said, “change can be an incredible motivator and foster success.”

Gene Swackhamer, Purdue alumnus and Past Grand President, wrote about the development of the Brotherhood Program in the Centennial History of AGR. “The road to the Brotherhood Program was a long and deliberate examination of the problems SPRING 2017

with pledging, particularly the correlation between hazing and the high attrition rate that averaged between 20 to 25 percent nationally for AGR men,” Swackhamer wrote. “Both hazing and pledge attrition were contrary to the AGR purpose to ‘make better men’.”

It became apparent to many Brothers of AGR that somewhere along the line, not by any massive change, the focus had shifted from recruiting and initiation to pledging and hazing as a concept of acceptance and a rite of passage in the Fraternity.

Something had to be changed to address pledge education programs with negative reinforcement experiences and potential negative ramifications that were happening in most all fraternal organizations.

Nichols mentioned this was important not only for risk management purposes, but also for the sake of “common sense.”

“Just as American agriculture as a whole has endorsed dynamic change, so has our great Fraternity,” said Nichols. “That is what leaders do.”

In the summer of 1991, national leaders and fraternal-world experts met at the annual AGR National Leadership Conference in Branson, Missouri. They explored how to eliminate hazing and regain the focus of our Fraternity back to the AGR Purpose. Leaders of the Fraternity felt the pledging processes were not creating an environment conducive to Making Better Men. The recommendation was to amend the AGR Constitution and completely 12

eliminate pledging.

Soon after, Allan Johnson, North Dakota State alumnus, was elected Grand President at the 1992 Convention. Johnson recalls the development of the Constitutional change and the implementation of life without pledging for AGR. “The behavior research the board reviewed was very compelling on the connection between pledging and hazing and other dominant/subservient conduct within organizations,” Johnson said. “The research, and the fact that pledging was

not a part of AGR culture until post WWII, gave us the conviction to deal with the problem.”

Johnson was pleasantly surprised by the positive reception to the Brotherhood Program by most undergraduates and alumni groups. However, there seemed to be some hardened resistance to the program by some older chapters who had developed their own methods of programming.

“I think the most fulfilling part of the entire Brotherhood Program rollout was when the program was debated at the National Convention,” Johnson said. “After passionate debate on both sides of the issue, the voting undergraduate delegates supported the board’s actions.”

Even with the amazing amount of support, some confusion among chapters persisted, especially those chapters who considered themselves “successful” and “strong”. Why should they have to change?

The Fraternity, with strong input from chapter leadership, assigned coaches to chapters and set out to re-educate the sometimes-skeptical brotherhood. They focused on reiterating why the program was instituted and why it was necessary for a leading fraternal organization.

Swackhamer remembers the Brotherhood Program was “exciting and freeing” for some chapters. For others, however, fear spread about possible new initiates not getting to know their brothers and that there would be “no leverage to get them to know about AGR.”

An attempt to turn back the Brotherhood Program made for a controversial National Convention back in 1992. Some Brothers began politicking before business sessions to try to persuade others to vote against the Program. Others, like Dr. Tom Sutherland, former Beirut hostage, attended to speak for it and the positive future ahead. Warren Nichols, Grand President from 1990- 1992, swore in Al Johnson as the 19921994 Grand President during the Convention.

Both Nichols and Johnson were great advocates of the Program.

“We might as well not even call it the Brotherhood Program,” one Vice Noble Ruler contested during the debate at the 1992 National Convention, “we’re getting these guys into the Chapter and giving them voting rights, yet they have no idea what it is to be a Brother.”

Time would eventually heal most of the fears brought into the debate in 1992.

One incredibly positive development of the change is the professionalism and structure of the Fraternity’s recruitment program, along with academic progress on most of the campuses AGR calls home.

“No pledging” gave AGR something unique to offer along with the promise of a lifelong personal and professional relationship within the Fraternity.

Back in 1992, AGR was among only a few national fraternities to adopt a no pledging program. Today, that number remains low, which is perplexing to many AGR leaders.

Johnson, who also served as National Interfraternity Council leader, expected many other Fraternities in the NIC would follow AGRs lead since hazing seemed to be a constant problem for the organizations.

“Today, when you read about a Fraternity hazing issue in the national news, one of the first solutions to come from the leaders of that Fraternity is to eliminate pledging,” Johnson said.

Alpha Gamma Rho is proud to be not only a leader in agriculture and related fields, but a leader in the Greek System.

The Fraternity remains as committed to the groundbreaking Brotherhood Program in 2017 as it was 25 years ago. In fact, the steady growth in recruitment and campus involvement seem to point to the Brotherhood Program as a reason for AGR’s continued success and respect on campuses.

Alpha Gamma Rho is determined to enhance the Program to raise the bar even higher. The Brotherhood Program Task Force has made goals to further develop the program so it will be implemented as more than just new member education but an ongoing program intended to continually develop members in our Fraternity. The Fraternity has challenged the Task Force to innovate from a position of strength, take recommendations, and accomplish more change for the better.

Because, as Warren Nichols said back in 1992, “that is what leaders do.”

Times of Change

IN THE EARLY 1990’S THE WORLD WAS A PLACE OF CHANGE. Communism was in decline as the 90’s were ushered in by the fall of the Berlin Wall; the cell phone became widely adopted — and we can see how that has impacted our world today! It was also an important period of change for some of us who left the farm and headed to college. Personally, I was destined for Colorado State University. Unknown to me at the time, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity was preparing for an important change, one that would have a lasting impact — the Brotherhood Program.

I was initiated into Rho Chapter at Colorado State in the fall of 1991.

I found out later that those of us that joined the Chapter in 1991 were part of a transitional approach in preparation for the Brotherhood Program. This change was designed to move away from pledging and hazing to a more professional approach of interviews, ongoing education, discernment, and introduction.

Dan Ellsworth, a brother I recruited to AGR during those times of change, was one of the fi rst to witness the full transition under the Brotherhood Program. He went on to serve as VNR of Recruitment and was elected Noble Ruler the year after I served in the position.

Recently we reminisced how 25 years has fl own by. I asked Dan if he could remember how the Brotherhood Program impacted his experiences as an undergraduate at Rho Chapter.

“The Brotherhood Program confi rmed my perception that AGR was committed to professionalism,” Dan recalled.

We laughed as he shared stories of how other fraternities had tried to recruit him by performing crazy antics (one which involved sliding down a staircase on a mattress) and boasting about their social “prowess” on campus.

“I felt that AGR was different,” Dan said. “We had a lot of fun, but we all knew there was an end to college life and that we needed to be equipped for the future.”

He reminded me that his decision to join AGR was because of 14

his initial perception that the Fraternity was committed to a balance of social and professional development.

Now, as the President and CEO of Animart, a dairy and livestock animal health supplier, Dan runs a business that exists in a challenging environment of stiff competition and, many times, thin — Dan Ellsworth, Colorado State, margins. Yet, he has CEO of Animart successfully grown the business, including two recent company acquisitions. He rose through the corporate ranks in the animal health industry and has had a positive impact on agriculture and the world.

The business environment Dan operates in reminds me of our experiences together at Colorado State. It was, and still is, a challenging and competitive place for fraternities and Greek life.

This atmosphere can be a tough place to recruit. But again, AGR is different; we know our audience and we hold true to our values.

Isn’t it fitting that a Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, is credited with saying, “change is the only constant in life”. Changes in politics, changes in technology and changes in business have left their mark in the last 25 years. Dan and I agree, the Brotherhood program has defi nitely left its mark on Alpha Gamma Rho, and changed our fraternity for the better.

25 Years of Daring to Be Different IN MY WORK AS A CONSULTANT AND

In 1992, Alpha Gamma Rho adopted the Brotherhood Program with the future in mind. 25 years later, the Fraternity has accomplished so much on campuses throughout the Nation. Now, the focus is on the next 25 years of daring to be different.

researcher in the fraternity and sorority industry, I have the opportunity to travel around the country and talk with college fraternity members about issues as far-ranging as recruitment, hazing, sexual misconduct, and brotherhood. Naturally, that work lends itself to meeting many AGR brothers in my travels, and it gives me a very unique understanding of Alpha Gamma Rho’s place within the broader fraternal landscape.

Of all of the things I have learned about my fraternity since being initiated into the Alpha Kappa Chapter at Tennessee-Knoxville in the fall of 1997, one discovery seems much more profound and important than the others: There are two types of AGR chapters out there: those who are proud of being diff erent, and those who want to be like everyone else.

Those who take pride in being diff erent have embraced the Brotherhood Program. They see great value in the no pledging and no hazing policy and use it as a recruitment tool. They recruit quality men attracted to ideas of

self-betterment, meaningful connection, and leadership development. They see the social aspects of the fraternity as a benefit, and not the main purpose, of Alpha Gamma Rho. They are true to our founding values, hold the Covenant of AGR in high regard, and truly work to make better men. They are a product of the Brotherhood Program.

One the other hand, some chapters within our membership would be barely recognizable to those who developed the Brotherhood Program 25 years ago, not to mention those who founded our great fraternity in 1904. Seemingly, they did not initiate their new members within the requisite 72 hours, and instead attempted to run their own pledge education programs lasting several weeks. Many failed to hold one another to high standards of accountability.

They saw the social aspects of the fraternity as its primary purpose, and viewed everything else as a distraction.

In short, they were not being true to AGR. Chapters like this do not value being diff erent, and instead have made a concerted eff ort to be like everyone else.

25 Years of Daring to Be Different WHAT WE HAVE DONE As we celebrate 25 years of our Brotherhood Program, it is important to hold up a mirror and honestly refl ect on where we are as a fraternity. For me, that assessment renders a mixed bag of observations: Relative to other fraternities, we have eff ectively reduced hazing within our organization, we have minimal issues with substance abuse, and we are providing a meaningful social and professional experience for thousands of young men across the country.

Most of our chapters employ high standards of accountability for all members, and use the Semi-Annual Brotherhood Vote as a tool to measure campus and chapter involvement, pursuit of academic excellence and maintain commitment to the fraternity’s standards and expectations. In fact, AGR’s internal systems of accountability are unrivaled in the fraternal industry. From my experience with diff erent college landscapes, our undergraduate chapters hold our members to higher standards of conduct than any other fraternity. A brotherhood based on accountability has been the hallmark of AGR’s success story in the last 25 years. We have much to be proud of on this front.

WHAT WE HAVE LEFT TO DO What I have discovered in my travels and my research, however, is that a brotherhood based on accountability is most eff ective when it is coupled with a strong sense of brotherhood based on belonging. It seems where our Brotherhood Program succeeds in reducing hazing, building strong systems of accountability, and teaching new members about the history, values, and expectations of AGR, it can fail in helping our undergraduate chapters build new member programs designed to create a deep sense of belonging. Fraternity members who feel a strong sense of connection to their brothers are also the members who are the most committed to the betterment of the organization.

And although our current Brotherhood Program has achieved so much in the last 25 years, it has failed to address or provide additional guidance to our undergraduate chapters on creating a brotherhood based on belonging.

As a result of this, we’ve found that some of our chapters may have gone against our constitution and returned to pledging type activities as the only means they know of trying to build a meaningful connection among their members. As a result, they have been subject to disciplinary action, often involving probation with the Home Offi ce and on their respective campuses.

These Chapters failed to realize hazing builds only a short-term sense of accomplishment that quickly dissipates. Hazing does not create members who feel long-term commitment to their fraternity or to their Brothers. Long term commitments and meaningful connections are built by activities designed with opportunities for people to depend on one another and share things about themselves. Research has shown that the individuals who are able to comfortably trust others enough to openly share more personal information often feel the greatest sense of connection to a group.

As we look forward to the next 25 years of AGR’s Brotherhood Program, we need to continue daring to be different. We must build upon the success of the last 25 years, and improve our Brotherhood Program by helping our chapters build stronger brotherhood based on belonging and meaningful connections. We must do a better job holding our chapters accountable to the standards and expectations of Alpha Gamma Rho. Finally, and most importantly, we must work every day, in every way, to build a Brotherhood Program designed to make better men, and through them a broader and better agriculture.

What I’ve Learned

I received a letter a few years ago from the AGR Home Office congratulating me on the 25th anniversary of my initiation into AGR, and it brought back a lot of memories on the things that have changed — Marriage, career and kids changed my priorities, and the world is certainly different. Post-Cold War. Post9-11. Smart phones. Political correctness and zero tolerance on campuses. Would I have even survived college in this era?

I now have a son in college at my alma mater. It is interesting to get his perspective on college and Greek life. Much has changed, but fraternities are still a vital part of the college experience. In fact, my home chapter at Tennessee-Knoxville is far larger and more successful than when I was on campus. When I joined AGR over 25 years ago we were a smaller, rag-tag group of ag students and, I suppose, we got away with a lot of things that we couldn’t today. We were probably like

most Greek fraternities that used pledging at the time, and we had a lot of hazing and risk management issues that would still make me blush to tell my mother.

Somehow we survived, and in 1992, I was fortunate to see the start of what would become one of the hallmarks of our fraternity — the Brotherhood Program.

The Brotherhood Program was certainly controversial at first; I suppose the only person that likes change is a wet baby. I didn’t like or fully understand the reasoning for the change at the time — it felt like a violation of tradition to me and many others. Since that time, I have worked on the AGR Home Office staff, traveled to over 40 AGR chapters, and served in various national leadership positions. I have come to understand and appreciate the benefits of the program. I am now SPRING 2017

What I've Learned

Here are some of the lessons that I have learned about the Brotherhood Program:

It’s Necessary. Hazing & risk management issues were primary reasons for the adoption of a no-pledging program, and we unfortunately must still be diligent in addressing them today. Both the social tolerance and the legal liability of hazing practices have shifted, and the risk of bad behavior, often inherent in pledging activities, creates a threat to our entire existence. Today’s campuses and students are not willing to tolerate bad behavior, and there are plenty of smart phones available to publicize negative conduct. AGR was an early adopter in the fraternity world, and today we see a number of other large fraternities who have adopted similar

a number of features, and to utilize some of these local “best practices” to improve the national curriculum.

It’s More Than Just A New Member Education Program. Our goal is to create an ongoing membership development program that mentors, trains and develops our members into campus, community and industry leaders. This involves better use of training, curriculum, the Golden Crescent, AGRconnect, Big Brothers, alumni mentors, Semi-Annual Reviews, Five Orders recognition program and other facets of the program. In addition, all of these resources should help to instill our AGR values and strengthen brotherhood among members.

Recruitment Is Key. It is essential that we recruit high quality men. Unfortunately many chapters have not evolved from traditional fraternity recruitment practices that A) identify prospective members early enough and B) adequately

It’s Working. Average chapter sizes have increased 29% since the start of the Brotherhood Program, and annual initiations have increased 37%. We have largely changed the culture away from hazing and class divisions. Many older alumni, including me, are surprised to know that the Brotherhood Program is uncontroversial and mostly adopted by many chapters. Unfortunately, many alumni are not aware of its success. Alumni may also be surprised to know that over half of AGR’s living alumni have been initiated under the Brotherhood Program, and vital, lifelong friendships and cutting-edge leadership skills are still being forged in their local chapters.

GOALS OF THE BROTHERHOOD PROGRAM TASK FORCE: 1. Celebrate 25th Anniversary of the Brotherhood Program and its many successes 2. Educate membership on program, benefits and resources 3. Evaluate implementation and eff ectiveness of program 4. Enhance program curriculum and resources

Continued Campus Involvement In October of 2016, Nu Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho was awarded Fraternity of the Year at North Carolina State University. With the great accomplishment under their belt, the Chapter continues to work hard and maintain high expectations. On January 26, several brothers, including adviser Charlie Main, met with Dr. Richard Linton, the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS).

During the meeting, the Dean highlighted several key events Nu Chapter can participate in to help the college. He mentioned the Chapter could host the annual CALS tailgate, which is now on the Nu Chapter's fall 2017 calendar.

Dean Linton also informed the Chapter that CALS is expanding its efforts to recruit new students. He feels it is becoming increasingly difficult to convince young students to enroll in majors related to agriculture.

The meeting led to a deeper understanding of CALS’s plan for the future and what Nu Chapter can do to help the college attain its goals.

“It is clear that, under Dean Linton’s leadership, the College will see growth and success for many years to come,” said current Noble Ruler Ben Cauthen, “and Nu Chapter hopes to be a part of that.”

This was the first year of the event, which was hosted at the AGR Epsilon House, on the brand-new Clyde Challey Centennial Terrace.

“It was an excellent opportunity to work towards a great cause and build relationships with members of another fraternity on campus,” said former Undergraduate Director and current Noble Ruler, Will Bollum.

AGR Brother Gabel Hoseth coordinated the event and felt the most challenging task was raising enough money from sponsors for the event’s t-shirts. With the help of Brothers, Hoseth reached his fundraising goal, getting sponsorships from over 20 sponsors.

To raise money, Bison for Breasts t-shirts were sold around campus and throughout the community. A chicken breast meal with a free-will donation was also made available. The event and other sales allowed the two fraternities to raise over $6,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society.

The AGR Holiday Classic is an annual cattle show put on by Beta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at The Ohio State University. Spanning throughout two days, the show includes two competitive rings. Each year, the Chapter strives to add more exhibitors, sponsors and participants.

The 2016 AGR Holiday Classic, held on December 9-11, 2016, was the largest yet with 508 head of cattle from Ohio and surrounding areas. The Chapter was able to make a donation of $10,000 to BuckeyeThon, the largest, student-run philanthropy at Ohio State which donates money to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. With this donation, Beta Chapter is now the largest student organization donor at The Ohio State.

“We are extremely pleased with how the event went in its first year,” said Bollum.

Fraternity of the Year

The Alpha Kappa Chapter at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville received the prestigious award of “Fraternity Chapter of the Year” on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the university’s Greek Awards ceremony. The Chapter was noted for receiving the reward for numerous accomplishments in and out of the classroom. One of these accomplishments includes the philanthropy, Water Wars, through which Brothers raised $10,000 to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Alpha Kappa Brothers have continued to be leaders in student organizations on campus, including Brothers serving as President of IFC and the Student Government Association. Other Brothers hold positions in multiple organizations including Poultry Club, Plant Science Club, All Campus Events, and more. Noble Ruler J.R. Clay says that alumni support is another big reason for the Chapter’s success.

Gumbo Cook-off

Gamma Epsilon Chapter held their second fundraising event, Gumbo Cook-off, this February. The Chapter raised approximately $2,000 dollars from sponsors, cook-off entries, and raffle tickets. These funds allowed the Chapter to plan a formal event and also prepare to hold philanthropy events in the fall of 2017.

“Being Alpha Gamma Rho’s youngest chapter, we certainly have ground to cover,” said Shawn Ahmad, current VNR of Planning. “However, we are incredibly proud of the Brotherhood we have developed, and continue to develop.”

“The alumni continue to help our undergraduates tremendously,” said Clay. Alpha Kappa alumni gave out $36,000 in scholarships during the spring 2016 Parent Founder’s Day. This spring, dedicated alumni plan to give out $44,000 in scholarships. “They have also raised 1.5 million dollars to go towards our new housing renovation,” Clay added.

Lastly, the Chapter feels their strong relationship with the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources adds to their success. “The professors appreciate the hard work our men put into the classroom,” said Clay, “March 2nd we will be hosting a faculty appreciation dinner for the department heads and professors of AG campus.” On April 3, 2017, the Chapter will initiate the new chancellor of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, Dr. Tim Cross.

“Alpha Kappa strives to continue to prove that AGR produces a different breed of fraternity men,” said Clay.

Montana State

2016 Testicle Festival Alpha Delta Chapter at Montana State University held their annual “Testicle Festival” philanthropy event in October 2016. The Testicle Festival was held at the Gallatin Country Fairgrounds in Bozeman, Montana. Along with frying “Rocky Mountain Oysters”, the Chapter had live entertainment with Texan country artist Bart Crow as the main performance. The event raised $15,212 in profits with the proceeds equally distributed among the Montana FFA Foundation, Montana 4-H, Montana Special Olympics, and Farm Rescue.

Ag Fest, an event welcoming all faculty and students back to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, is a well-known event students anticipate every year.

Since 1977, the Beta Gamma Chapter has put on this annual event. Hungry students gather at the Alpha Gamma Rho-Beta Gamma Chapter House for food and conversation after summer break. The Chapter hosts a free meal and speaker as a way to give back to the student body.

New, eager students are welcome to tour the Chapter’s house and learn what the future may hold for them.

“We also use this event for recruitment,” said sophomore Phillip Sersch, “promoting our leadership opportunities, brotherhood, and professionalism associated with being an Alpha Gamma Rho Brother.”

During the 2016 Ag Fest, held on September 16, Beta Gamma welcomed over 200 students, faculty, and 19 agricultural based organizations, including other fraternities and sororities. While eating, attendees listened to Jeffrey Rieck, current crop research technician at Cropsmith. Rieck spoke about his life after graduation and the experience he’s had teaching students, selling seed, and attempting to make agriculture industry better as a whole.

In January, Beta Nu Chapter at Texas A&M University met other members of the Texas AGR Chapters in Hamilton, Texas at the 4P Game Ranch for a weekend retreat. David and Donald De Jong, brothers and alumni of the Chi Chapter at Cal Poly-SLO hosted the event. While there, discussion included Texas AGRs reaching their full potential, utilizing AGRconnect, and “Making the Best Through Brotherhood”.

One highlight of the weekend was the honorary initiation of Peter De Jong.

Peter De Jong is 20 years old and has had Epilepsy since a very young age.

“Due to Epilepsy, Peter is not able to continue his collegiate education,” said Preston De Jong, VNR Alumni Relations, “but this does not keep him from being a dynamic member in our Chapter. Since joining, Peter’s dedication to our chapter has inspired us.”

This inspiration led the Chapter to choose the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas as their beneficiary of their annual philanthropy event. They set a goal to raise money and awareness for a cause they were able to get passionate about.

“It was an easy decision on our part not only to help Peter but other families that

struggle with the difficulties of Epilepsy,” said Preston De Jong.

“When a brother is in need, we find a way to help him.”

The philanthropy event was Bumper Ball/Knocker Ball (below). Peter was present at the event, where he had the opportunity to meet all of his brothers since being initiated in January.

“It was great getting to come to Aggieland and have the opportunity to meet my brothers. The fact that they were willing to benefit an organization that is close to my family’s heart means the world,” said Peter. “It made me proud to call them all my brothers and members of Alpha Gamma Rho.” The Epilepsy Foundation of Texas was also present at the event and the the total amount of money raised was close to $7,000. The Chapter plans to keep their partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation for years to come and hopes the event continues to grow each year.

“We hope to possibly start an annual statewide Texas AGR philanthropy event that will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas and other deserving organizations,” said Preston.

Overall, Alpha Gamma Rho and its members were pleased with the attendance of the students and faculty. “This event makes us unique on campus and students look forward to it every year,” said Sersch.

Winter Bonanza Success Winter Bonanza is an annual fall philanthropy hosted by Pi Chapter at Oklahoma State University.

This year, the event was directed by chairmen Bray Haven and Carson Vinyard, both seniors within the Chapter. The show, held on December 9-11, was a standout in many ways. The youth cattle jackpot has earned a renowned reputation within the community and over 350 steers and heifers were exhibited throughout the two-day span. Livestock judges Jeff Jackson and Miles Toenyes donated their time by judging the event.

“The support from alumni and collegiate members truly makes this show a success,” said Haven, “We have several alumni in the industry and with continued monetary donations we are able to donate to a family in need, put on a wonderful special needs show, and pay out 100% to livestock exhibitors.”

Although the cattle jackpot is the backbone of the event, the Brothers feel the greatest joy comes from the special needs livestock show — The Heart of a Champion.

The Heart of a Champion show, directed by former Undergraduate Director and current Noble

Ruler Cody Dean, invites local special needs students and gives them an opportunity to come into the arena and work with livestock. All students who participated in the show got the chance to learn about agriculture. To make the event even more special, the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team and mascot Pistol Pete made a special appearance.

Pi Chapter has been seeking ways to give back more to their local community and felt this year’s show was a perfect opportunity.

The Chapter donated a percentage of entry fees to the Nielson family in Western Oklahoma.

Hagen Nielson, a young man who was recently diagnosed with a disability which accumulated many medical bills, was beyond appreciative for the event. Due to the extreme generosity of others and the come-together attitude of the community, Winter Bonanza allowed the Chapter to send the family a $7,000 check just in time for Christmas.

“We are so grateful to be a part of the livestock industry and hope this new aspect of our philanthropy continues to grow in the future,” said Vinyard.

Florida Southern College

Buck-Off is Back On January 20, 2017, Gamma Alpha Chapter at Florida Southern College held a philanthropy event on campus for the first time in three years. Gamma Alpha Chapter is currently composed of only 11 members, making it the smallest fraternity on the Florida Southern campus. The small size of the Chapter has made it difficult to hold large events in the past, but this year Brothers put in the time to make it happen.

The event, called Buck-Off, featured a speaker, food truck, and mechanical bull riding contest. Proceeds helped support the local Talbot House Ministries which aids the homeless and others struggling within the Polk County community. Donations help them provide others with food, housing opportunities, and employment training programs.

The goal of the Talbot House is not only to help those who are in need, but to assist them in creating a better life for themselves.

“This event meant the world to me. Putting in all the time and effort to make it happen was all worth it to see it come together, but there is no way the event could have taken place without the help of my brothers,” said Conor Peters, Noble Ruler. “We do plan on having the event again, and we already have ideas on how make it even better in the future.”

SIGMA Washington State

Commitment to Academics Deciding to hold each member to a higher level of accountability academically was the main goal set by Sigma Chapter at Washington State University throughout the last year. The Chapter utilized teams of older members and paired them up with younger members for tutoring opportunities, set up proper study hours, and created exam prepara22 SICKLE & SHEAF

tions programs. Sigma Chapter decided these practices would be very beneficial to new members, as this provided additional opportunities to get to know the other Brothers. In addition, the older members who have taken classes that freshmen members are currently taking were able to provide helpful tips for studying.

“By holding all members to a higher standard and finding ways to help each other achieve the GPA each of us wanted, we also raised our fraternity to a higher tier,”

said Dalton Keller, current VNR Alumni Relations.

Now, the Chapter’s freshmen members have a class-high cumulative 3.17 GPA and the Chapter holds a 3.08 GPA overall, one of the highest in the Washington State Greek community. This achievement led Sigma Chapter to be honored with the Washington State University United Greek Council’s Arete Award for obtaining the most improved GPA.

Brother and Chancellor The Beta Eta Chapter at Virginia Tech had the pleasure of congratulating Dr. Ronnie Green on his appointment to Chancellor of University of Nebraska-Lincoln last semester. Green grew up on a Virginia farm and attended Virginia Tech, joining the Beta Eta Brotherhood in the spring of 1981. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and continued on to earn a doctorate in animal genetics at UNL. Green shared his wealth of knowledge as a faculty member at Texas Tech and Colorado State before moving to work in both the public and private sector. He eventually found his way back to the University of Nebraska when he was offered the job of Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2010. From here, Green went on to replace the retiring chancellor. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech held a fantastic dinner and reception in his honor which many of the brothers of Beta Eta Chapter attended. He also made his way to the Chapter house during his stay in Blacksburg, VA. “It is really great to see one of our alumni being appointed to such an honorable position. It really shows the type of men we create here in Alpha Gamma Rho” said the Beta Eta sophomore Cole Leonard. “We again congratulate our brother Ronnie Green and wish him well as the Chancellor of Nebraska-Lincoln!”

Monday, February 13, 2017, Alpha Alpha chapter at West Virginia University successfully initiated 9 new Brothers, surpassing their 1,000th member mark. The Chapter is proud to announce there have been 1,005 members offi cially initiated and involved within Alpha Alpha. Andrew Adams, current Noble Ruler, sees this remarkable feat as a way to reconnect with alumni, and show them how far the chapter has come in recent years.

“We have been contacting alumni and informing them of the news,” said Adams, “as some of them may have seen 1,000 members as a mere stretch of the imagination.”

The Chapter feels they owe their success to the current collegiate members and alumni, who have helped with every step of the recruiting process and worked hard to prepare for the next semester’s newest members.

“Recruitment is a process every brother needs to be participating in, and can be done at any time which is one thing we all remind one another of throughout the school year,” said Adams. The Chapter has also raised their GPA requirements to ensure they have been focusing on quality members.

Beta Iota Chapter at Truman State University in Kirskville, Missouri has been under construction for some new improvements to their Chapter House. The new addition includes a space for chapter meetings and an outside shelter for chapter functions including recruitment events. The construction included new concrete added for all weather usage and ground work for more eff ective water drainage.

This is the second addition to the chapter house in two years. The fi rst remodel included the addition of private rooms and bathrooms for an addition of eight Brothers. “These new improvements have added to the overall chapter appearance,” said George Magers, Adviser for Beta Iota. “The men of Beta Iota Chapter are excited for their next recruitment function.”

MITCH GRYSZKIEWICZ WAS THE EPITOME OF AN AGR BROTHER.

He was a hard working student, studying Agricultural Science and Technolo-

gy at the University of Maryland. His hard work ethic transcended out of the classroom and into other facets of his life. He regularly went home to work on his family’s tobacco farm, and managed to stay very active in all Alpha Theta Chapter activities. Although Mitch took his life in the summer of 2014, his legacy in Alpha Theta lives on. The heavy hearted brothers of Alpha Theta Chapter responded to Mitch’s death by starting the annual Mitch-a-Palooza.

“Mitch-a-Palooza is a pig roast held to honor Mitch and, more importantly, to celebrate his life,” said Jake Krier, current VNR Philanthropy.

To further extend the positive impact of the event, it is used to raise money and awareness for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Out of the Darkness walk. 2016 marked the first year of the AFSP Out of the Darkness walk at the University of Maryland and the first Mitch-a-Palooza. Despite being the first year, the enormous support from the community enabled the walk at the University of Maryland to be the top suicide awareness and prevention walk in the nation. Alpha Theta raised nearly $7,000 toward the AFSP Out of the Darkness walk. As a result, this year Alpha Theta Chapter decided to co-sponsor the 2017 Out of the Darkness event. The Chapter has made great strides in philanthropy, but intends to set the bar higher each year by growing the event, raising suicide awareness, and gathering more donations. Alpha Theta Chapter plans to continue Mitch’s legacy while making Mitch-a-palooza and the Maryland Out of the Darkness walk bigger than ever. The 2017 walk is scheduled for April 9, 2017 on the University of Maryland campus.

If you strive toward such goals, my career in education and human resources has yielded a bumper harvest of experience that may be of value to you. Here are my top insights to toss into your life toolbox along with your brand new college degree.

➻ Always do what is right.

There is never a wrong time to do the right thing and never a right time to do the wrong thing.

➻ Focus on what you have, not what you don’t have.

And don’t worry about it.

Worry drains too much energy!

➻ Cherish the little pushes in life. These are suggestions from others, often unsought, about something you should do. Welcome them.

Little pushes come from parents, teachers, supervisors, colleagues, and friends.

I recall, for example, as a young AGR how older Brothers in the Chapter gave me a little push to run for student senate and then campaigned hard to get me elected. This inspired me to become even more involved in leadership in college and throughout my career.

➻ Build people up, and don’t let others get you down.

People that put others down normally don’t like themselves and believe misery loves company.

➻ Have fun at work. If you do, other people will want to be around you.

➻ The most important decision you are ever going to make is not job related. It is choosing the lady with whom you want to spend the rest of your life. Don’t get married because you want to live with her. Get married because you can’t live without her. I am very blessed to be married to my wife and best friend, Bunny, for 43 years.

➻ Be very selective in who you tell your problems. As a rule, 90% of people don’t care, and the other 10% are glad you have those problems!

➻ Anticipate and pounce on every opportunity. More than 10,000 baby boomers are retiring every day. Only 6% of people in this world receive a college degree. Much will be expected of you and soon. Always perform to the best of your ability. It is disappointing when people who have been given so much accomplish so little, and amazing how others given so little accomplish so much.

➻ Your reputation takes shape on day one. People are watching you … especially the baby boomers. They are observing if you show up on time, hold yourself accountable, accept leadership responsibilities, handle expanding duties, solve problems without being told what to do, balance your work and personal time, and how you deal with adversity.

➻ Enthusiastically accept inevitable change. Change will not stop. It will only come faster. No matter how well planned, change will not be trouble free. The standard expectation for everything is faster, cheaper, simpler and better. You are responsible for making the changes successful.

➻ Protect your brand. Your smile is your logo. Your personality is your business card. How you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark.

Q&AGR BRANDON SCHAEFER LEFT HIS SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURE TO FOLLOW HIS PASSION FOR HELPING LEADERS GROW THEIR COMPANIES

BY APPLYING A BIBLICALLY-BASED BUSINESS MODEL. Schaefer is the Founder/CEO of Five Capitals, which offers coaching and consulting to help business leaders and owners develop their leadership skills, and grow their businesses.

He was initiated into Eta Chapter at Iowa State in 1999 and graduated with degrees in Agricultural Business, International Agriculture and Spanish in 2003. After years working of in the corporate world, Brother Schaefer was called to work in the local church. Since then he’s completed a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Master’s Degree in Biblical Studies from Asbury Seminary.

A sought after speaker, leading a global organization, he’s also authored the book, “Build a Better Life.”

Why did you choose to pursue a career in agriculture when you first began at Iowa State University?

Growing up in a farming family, I had a strong sense of the importance and opportunities in agriculture.

In highschool, a great Spanish teacher took a group of us students to Spain for two weeks. For the first week, I stayed with a farming family. The experience really awakened me to the global nature of agriculture.

How has AGR helped fulfill its mission and promise to make you a better man?

1) Work ethic. AGR demands it. 2) Taking initiative. Members are expected to get involved and make a difference.

3) Leadership skills.

I observed and learned from good leaders and wanted to be one, too. 4) Valuing friendships and strength of community. A number of my best friends today are those I made through AGR.

What attributes of good leaders have you come to most value and appreciate over the years?

1) Self-awareness with integrity. Good leaders know themselves and accept themselves so they can forget about themselves.

Then they’re able to fully give themselves to others.

2) At ease with risk. They don’t mind being risk-takers at the front of the parade with new ideas, change, and doing so with honesty and humility. 3) Relaxed and playful. Good leaders love fun and bring joy to others.

They are contagious people to be around.

What advice do you have for undergraduate members as they prepare for a career and life after college?

1) Figure out your faith.

What does God mean to you? Too many adults take on the faith of their parents, leave it in college and never come back.

Decide what you believe (and why) and then live it out. 2) Leadership failure is often a good predictor of future leadership success.

Younger leaders often get into leadership for the wrong reasons and then fail. But they can learn and grow from those mistakes.

College is a great place for aspiring leaders to “fail faster” and improve by what they learn. Get involved.

3) You can’t give away what you haven’t received.

Learn from your older AGR brothers and deliberately seek opportunities to learn from people of experience.

for a life of developing and mentoring others, starting with younger brothers of AGR. 4) Work hard to win at home. It’s hardest at home. Work just as hard or harder to build and

Helping young people to see how agricultural careers are or can be relevant to them is an important seeding task if they are to be receptive to joining Alpha Gamma Rho. An effective and productive path should be established, and strong bonds ensure entrance into that opportunity.

Our Roots

Pledge Manuals Prior to the AGR Brotherhood Program, new members of the fraternity were called pledges.

Alpha Gamma Rho pledges, like in many other fraternal organizations, did not have all the privileges as a full-fledged initiated member.

Pledge Manuals were given to the prospective new members to teach them the fundamentals of the Fraternity.

When the Brotherhood Program was adopted in 1992, pledge manuals were removed and the terms “pledge” and “active” no longer applied to Alpha Gamma Rho’s membership.

The program eliminated all pledging within the Fraternity. Once initiated, an AGR Brother has the same privileges and opportunities as any other Brother within the Chapter.
