WE HEARD YOU. Alpha Gamma Rho alumni recently raised concerns and provided constructive criticism related to The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho. The Board of Directors responded with changes that will positively impact how the Foundation will provide greater support to Alpha Gamma Rho brothers and chapters.

An ongoing survey is being conducted to better understand perceptions of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho, test elements of the Foundation’s mission statement, and gauge interest in areas of support. This will allow the Foundation to better communicate with donors to generate funding and demonstrate lasting impact. During an initial phase of the survey, many respondents raised concerns and provided constructive criticism the Board of Directors of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho took very seriously, and has responded with positive changes that will make the Foundation more competitive and provide greater support to members and chapters of Alpha Gamma Rho.

This past year marked the 50th anniversary of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho. Authorized by the voting delegate body at the 1966 Convention, it was established to foster the educational purposes of our Fraternity and to provide a mechanism by which contributions to AGR would be tax-deductible.

Just ten years after its establishment, the assets of the Foundation were approximately $40,000; fast forward to 2016-17 and the assets of our Foundation are now over $8,700,000! Thanks to the generous support of countless alumni, and the fact that the Foundation has constantly evolved to meet the changing needs of the Fraternity, we can all be proud of the impact the Foundation continues to have on our purpose to “Make Better Men”.

Recent successes include bringing valuable training online to all of our chapters through AGRconnect, annual grants to the Fraternity for educational programs, funding for the annual Leadership Seminars, providing professional facilitation for chapter strategic planning sessions, and more. Additionally, the Foundation manages over 100 designated funds which provide a variety of scholarship opportunities directly to many local chapters.

As we look ahead to the next 50 years, it is critical we evolve to ensure the mission of the Foundation is relevant to the needs of our members, as well as the wishes of our supporters. I am proud to say we have a diverse, professional and committed Board of Directors who have enthusiastically embraced this challenge.

This past year was marked with several key accomplishments. We conducted an extensive survey with a broad set of alumni and collegiate members to gain feedback and input on what the mission of

the Foundation should be moving forward. The clear response was to focus on “leadership development” and “scholarship”. As a result, a new mission statement has been developed which has inspired the theme of this Growth Report.

Based on feedback, a Task Force to Review Restricted Funds was established with the goal of simplifying our payout and fee structure. This will better serve existing restricted funds and be more competitive with alternative venues. I am happy to report that the recommendations of the Task Force were unanimously approved and are in the process of being implemented.

As a result, The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho will be an even better vehicle to expand impact across our brotherhood in the future.

This past year saw another record giving level for the annual Loyalty Fund of AGR. Gifts to support housing increased significantly through the Chapter Assistance Program as new or renovated housing became an increasing need within many chapters.

The theme of this year’s growth report is aptly named YOUR PURPOSEFUL MISSION. We hope you will agree that we sought out, listened and responded to your feedback. This is YOUR Foundation. Whether your gifts were to the Loyalty Fund, Chapter Assistance Program, other designated funds, or a qualifying Heritage Club legacy gift, THANK YOU for YOUR SUPPORT. THANK YOU for YOUR IMPACT. As a Director of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho, and Chairman of Alpha Gamma Rho’s Investment Committee, it’s my pleasure to update you on two important Foundation-related topics: the Foundation’s performance and the most recent changes from the Task Force to Review Restricted Funds.

This has been a busy year for those of us, both staff and volunteers, on the “money” side of your Foundation. We

are excited about the changes made to the investment process and Foundation procedures. We sincerely appreciate your investment in the Foundation. Together, we can “keep a good thing growing”.

Your Foundation’s investment portfolio is diversified and includes U.S and foreign company stocks, fixed income investments and publicly traded alternative investments. We minimize fees by using Electronically Traded Funds (ETFs) almost exclusively and we benefit from the experience of our Investment Committee along with the professional judgments of our Investment Advisor. Our goal is to produce a long-term return that both protects your tax-deductible contributions during “down” markets and grows the contributions when markets are up.

Your Foundation’s investment pool delivered an 8.3% increase in fiscal year 2017. This compared favorably with other diversified portfolios. During this past fiscal year, the Investment Committee reviewed its approach to asset allocation and made a change which will keep AGR’s portfolio closer to the more “typical” U.S. investor. In addition, rather than maintaining a rigid, statistically determined asset allocation over time, we will rely more heavily on our professional Investment Advisor so emerging world events impacting the markets can be accounted for more quickly.

FOUNDATION PERFORMANCE

CHECK OUT THE CHANGES FROM THE TASK FORCE TO REVIEW RESTRICTED FUNDS

Based on feedback about the Foundation’s operations, a Task Force to Review Restricted Funds was established to evaluate and improve it’s processes. The goal was to simplify our payout and fee structure, examine the current procedures for receiving, investing and dispersing the restricted funds and determine our relative competitiveness with other organizations’ foundations. As a result, The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho will be an even better vehicle for expanding impact across our Brotherhood in the future.

Effective July 1, 2017, the annual management fee will be 1% of the fund balance regardless of size, annualized monthly (1/12 of 1% monthly). We are maintaining a 2% “gifting fee”, which is a one-time deduction upon receipt of funds into the Foundation because our research determined this was competitive with the 2-5% range we found many university foundations assessed. Fee income partially offsets overhead including managing the pay-out process, thank you notes, gift recognition and tax-receipting. Fee income also allows us to offer tools and resources such as AGRaiser.com, GiveBox, etc., that chapters and alumni can utilize to raise funds.

FEES HAVE BEEN REDUCED AND ARE EASY TO EXPLAIN.

Your Foundation is adopting changes to the pay-out process which is permitted by the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA). The pay-out process will now be consistent with processes used by many university and Greek foundations. Each year, the Foundation Board will review the markets and portfolio performance to declare a pay-out percentage for all restricted funds. We expect this annual pay-out to be in the range of 3-5% with the pay-out for fiscal year 2017-18 at 4%, which will be allocated quarterly (1% each quarter).

MORE CONSISTENT PAY-OUTS.

The Home Office staff, with Board oversight, is making changes to administrative processes intended to make our work and communications with donors, alumni corporations and chapters more consistent. These changes will be communicated in more detail throughout the upcoming year as we develop these procedures.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE DEFINED AND COMMUNICATED.

The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho is a not-for-profit corporation funded by voluntary contributions and investment income. The business purpose of the Foundation is to receive and invest contributed property and to distribute such property to qualifying organizations or persons for charitable, educational or scientific purposes. These charitable, educational and scientific purposes include the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States Internal Revenue Law). Organized in 1965, The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho operates as a tax-exempt, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and public charity under the laws of the State of Illinois. The employer identification number is 36-6158409.

GENE’S IMPACT It is nearly impossible to measure the incredible impact, viability, stability, and prosperity that Brother Gene Lemon’s time, talent and treasure have provided The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho. In addition to his duties as Legal Counsel, Grand President and General Counsel over the last 50 years, Brother Lemon has also served Alpha Gamma Rho in numerous other roles including helping to finalize the Bylaws which established The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho, serving as Second Century Chairman, and his role on the Executive Committee for AGRconnect.

Upon retiring as General Counsel

and in recognition of his 50 plus years of service, Alpha Gamma Rho recently honored Brother Lemon by appointing him as National Adviser, a position only previously held by the Grand Old Man of Alpha Gamma Rho Maynard Coe. This appointment is only one of Brother Lemon’s many accomplishments throughout his philanthropic service and charitable support to Alpha Gamma Rho. Simply stated, Gene Lemon is one of our most philanthropic and influential members in Alpha Gamma Rho’s history. Indeed, Alpha Gamma Rho is fortunate to have had the pleasure of witnessing and benefiting from his incredible service and leadership. We are in awe of his

devotion and commitment to the advancement of Alpha Gamma Rho; all while raising a family, excelling in his career, and serving many other philanthropic organizations.

The Foundation dedicates this spread of the 2017 Growth Report to commemorate the impact Gene Lemon has made in his 50-plus years of Legal and General Counsel to Alpha Gamma Rho and the incredible leadership, service, and philanthropic support he has provided before, during and beyond his term of counsel.

NICF 2017 OUTSTANDING FOUNDATION VOLUNTEER

Gene Lemon was the recipient of the NIC Foundation’s 2017 Outstanding Foundation Volunteer Award. This honor recognizes exemplary lifetime service to a fraternity or sorority organization and its foundation. The individual eligible for this nomination must have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills in major fundraising projects for a fraternity or sorority. Gene’s nomination included comments from many Brothers who have been impacted by his quality leadership, continuous motivation and devoted friendship.

A significant highlight was Gene helping establish The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho in 1965. His time, effort, and financial commitment to the fraternity is unprecedented. He has become known as “Mr. Alpha Gamma Rho” over his more than 50 years of service, and AGR could not be more proud.

SAYRE GRANTS The Sayre Fund was established when Brother William Sayre provided gifts to the Foundation specifically to promote interchapter relations and cooperation. Chapters may submit a Sayre Fund proposal form on Officer Portal for funding a Brotherhood event. All proposal forms are due annually on October 1. Events supported by the Sayre Fund include the AGR National BBQ competition, the AGR booth at the National Farm and Machinery Show, and AGR’s involvement with National FFA Convention.

CHAPTER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Chapter Assistance Program is offered by The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho to assist alumni corporations in providing educational facilities in major construction or renovation projects for chapters. The Housing funds are short-term, temporary in nature, and focused primarily on major chapter house renovations or construction.

MONTANTA STATE MAKEOVER “We started fundraising for our renovation project in 2013, and established the Alpha Delta Housing Fund with the Foundation.

After three years of fundraising efforts, we began construction in May 2016, and we consider the project to be a huge success!

The primary focus of the project was upgrading the dorm wing portion of the building. This component of the project included a full remodel of the bathrooms, removal of all previous study rooms and sleeping dorms and construction of 24 new study/ dorm rooms. There are 8 double rooms and 16 single rooms which provide for a live-in capacity of 32 members. Currently, the undergraduate chapter is thriving with more than 60 members and strong prospects for continued growth. Alpha Delta Chapter continues to demonstrate unparalleled leadership on campus and we certainly take pride in their accomplishments.

Working with The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho has been great. The Chapter Assistance Program allowed all donations from our alumni to be fully tax deductible which helped in our fundraising success. Last fall, we received an educational grant and a fundraising fee which helped to pay down our construction loan prior to establishing our long-term financing. The process was smooth and we have been pleased with our relationship with the staff at the Foundation. HOUSING RESOURCES TRUST (HRT)

developed a program to help chapters defer the cost for acquiring professional assessments of Chapter Houses. HRT Trustees help perform assessments that cover everything from immediate needs to long-term planning.

HRT HOUSING ASSESSMENT

is an in-depth, professional look at the overall “health” of the Chapter house and property. HRT Trustees identified a small group of companies who have broad experience and serve states in which our chapters are located. The HRT will match one-third of the cost for assessments up to a total of $6,000. After the assessment, the Chapter will be able to plan the best approach for improving their Chapter House.

RISK OF LOCAL FOUNDATION VS. YOUR FOUNDATION Utilizing The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho instead of a local foundation is suggested due to the professional services offered by the Foundation; including maintaining the 501(c)(3) IRS designation as a non-profit charitable organization, maintaining state charitable solicitation registrations, providing tax attorney services for establishing the grant agreements, and other benefits that may be more difficult at the local level. Further, the Foundation has successfully undergone three IRS audits and would be considered much less of an IRS audit risk due to the size of the Foundation and the amount of grants offered each year.

CHAPTER PLANNING SESSIONS ADMINISTRATIVE OVERHEAD

LEADERSHIP SEMINARS The 2017 Leadership Seminars, in partnership with Sigma Alpha Sorority, featured informational breakout sessions designed to develop young members’ knowledge and skills in areas including time and chapter management, personal finance, leadership strategies, recruitment education and much more. The theme was “TOTAL LEADER CHALLENGE” which involved sessions focused on using personal strengths and the skills of others in a group, building resiliency to overcome any challenges members may encounter, and best practices to recruit the best leaders to our respective organizations. This year 26 advisers, 63 alumni, and 370 undergraduate Brothers representing 61 (85%) chapters and 1 colony (Arkansas Tech) attended the four Leadership Seminars in Nashville, D.C., Reno, and Milwaukee. Overall, Leadership Seminars provide a venue for all chapter leaders to come together and learn about ways to enhance themselves personally and professionally.

ADVISER FORUMS The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho is helping fulfill your Promise and Values by helping develop our alumni volunteers potential for success through our Adviser Forums. AGR’s Adviser Forum Coordinator, Brother Tim Heiller, shares practical, first-hand experiences Advisers face in their role. While no two chapters are the same, they may face similar, if not identical, issues. Adviser Forum is where important programming areas and issues are discussed in an open dialogue. Advisers and Alumni Volunteers walk away with a plan of action on ways to be effective in their role as well as hone in on specific objectives in order to be mentors to their collegiate members.

HOUSEMOTHER/DIRECTOR SUPPORT Housemother/Directors are a crucial part of many chapters’ day to day success on their campuses. These dedicated men and women serve as a host/hostess, consultant, educator, chaperone and more for the young men in their college homes. Their guidance is invaluable as they often become close to every brother in the chapter house and are respected not only by the collegiate members but by all alumni, parents, and their campus communities.

After a combined 45 years of dedication and service to Alpha Gamma Rho, Ole Meland (Cal Poly) and Lowell Newsom (Missouri), passed on the Housemother/Director Coordinator title to Kay Lynn Kalkowski in February. Kalkowski, also known as “Mom K”, is a native Nebraskan and a lifelong educator. With her new role as Housemother/ Director Coordinator, Mom K hopes to help Housemothers and House Directors realize how important good relationships are in bringing about the best possible Kay Lynn Kalkowski - “Mom K” outcomes for both the collegiate members and the National Fraternity. She will also be responsible for helping train new Housemothers and House Directors as well as providing assistance to chapters who are in the process of hiring one.

Mom K hopes to spend 2017 getting to know the different AGR Housemother/Directors and developing programming for AGR’s Housemother/Director Forums. The forums help form a network of these vital contributors to Alpha Gamma Rho and provide them with ideas to take back to their chapters.

WHAT DOES AGR MEAN TO YOU? “I grew up in a family full of men who are Brothers of Alpha Gamma Rho. I’ve heard stories of the impact their involvement with AGR had on them and experienced firsthand the lifelong friendships they have developed. AGR is a family tradition and to be part of an organization that has had such an impact on men I respect was very important to me. The first day I arrived at Kansas State University, older Brothers pointed me toward different activities and opportunities. “As a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, I have acquired a higher grasp of the value of money and hard work. I grew up working in production agriculture and had several great role models in my life that introduced work ethic and respect as the most important values to live by.

In relation to scholarship, the values instilled in me and my involvement in Alpha Gamma Rho have motivated me to achieve multiple 4.0 semesters, with a cumulative gpa of 3.7, while being involved with the executive committee and working 20 to 30 hours a week. This scholarship will allow me to worry less about financial needs and focus more on personal excellence. CHAPTER PLANNING SESSIONS Chapter Planning Sessions, professionally facilitated by Zane Akins, help chapters get motivated and create goals that contribute to the successful future of Alpha Gamma Rho. Chapters who have recently held a Chapter Planning Session include Alpha Zeta (Kansas State), Alpha Delta (Montana State), Omicron (University of Kentucky), and more. Each have developed a useful strategic plan for the next 1-5 year(s) of Making Better Men. HOW TO SET UP A PLANNING SESSION:

1 Determine a date for the Friday/Saturday session.

2 Send email to Becky Haley at becky@alphagammarho.org to schedule the dates for your planning session.

3 Identify an equal number of undergraduate and alumni leaders. (minimum of five each)

4 Secure a meeting space other than the chapter house for the meeting.

5 Home Office will arrange facilitator’s transportation. Chapter provides meals, room and board.

RISE IN INVESTMENTS FOR 2016-17 AGR’S INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT PROCESS includes both the Investment Policy Council (which sets the investment policy) and the Investment Committee (which is charged to implement the policy and make investment decisions). The Investment Committee meets formally at least four times a year. They retain professional investment management expertise which they use to review performance, evaluate investment managers and evaluate alternative investment approaches.

Over the past four and a half years, I’ve visited with and listened to many of you about suggested changes which would position The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho as a more effective and beneficial vehicle to support Alpha Gamma Rho brothers and chapters. I’m grateful for the accountability that many of you provided and am proud of the efforts we have made, together, to position the Foundation for the future.

I recall the discussion during the November 2016 meeting of the Board of Directors of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho in Chicago, Illinois when I witnessed board members looking each other in the eye and saying “We need to review our processes, policies, and fees,” and, “We’ve got work to do.” Indeed, we did have work to do, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done!

The Foundation truly is committed to being a good steward of your investments by remaining efficient and competitive, and operating and communicating in a transparent manner. I take great pride in the fact that the Foundation has functioned so effectively, is fiscally and financially strong, and has been open to constructive feedback which, we believe, will make the Foundation even more effective. The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho continues to be considered a performance leader compared to other Greek foundations and remains a competitive and viable option for those donors wishing to ensure

their support benefits Alpha Gamma Rho, whether at the local or national level. Thanks to the visionary leadership, governance and oversight provided by the Foundation Board, and the role of the Task Force to Review Restricted Funds, the Foundation will continue to render incredibly impactful support, beneficial to AGR members and chapters. Now we will be doing so in a more efficient and effective manner, which is essential to ensuring continued support by you, our valued donors.
