THE MISSION The Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly magazine serves as a forum of communication to rekindle, sustain and excite member loyalty and interest through celebrating sisterhood, sharing our stories and recognizing and acknowledging individual and chapter/ club accomplishments. It also serves as a permanent record and archive, documenting the Fraternity.

International President's Viewpoint Dear Sisters,

I recently attended an alumni event celebrating the first female president in the 192-year history of my alma mater, Mercer University. I chatted with another alumna I had just met, and we found ourselves reflecting on both the similarities and differences in our time on campus. She graduated in the 1980s, while I graduated in the early 2000s.

Even though our experiences were decades apart, we shared the same special connection to our college days in Macon, Georgia.

At one point, she mentioned that she had been in a sorority, so of course, I asked which one.

She smiled and said, “Oh, I was an Alpha Gam.” Without hesitation, I replied, “Aren’t you still an Alpha Gam? I am too!”

Our conversation echoed a question posed a century ago in the March 1926 Quarterly: “Are you an Alpha Gamma Delta, or Were You One?” The article went on to challenge its readers: “Did you, while in college, behold the vision of our sisterhood and did the ideals of Alpha Gamma Delta enter deeply enough into your life so that now, while you are far out from college halls and college associations, you show the world that for Alpha Gamma Delta was and is and always shall be?”

It is a question that still feels relevant today.

We often share with potential new members during recruitment that Alpha Gam isn’t for four years, it’s for life. But what does that truly mean?

It’s more than Bid Day, date nights and philanthropy events. It’s a lifelong commitment to the values that shape who we are as members of Alpha Gamma Delta and how we impact the world.

While I will always cherish memories of my collegiate experience, my connection to Alpha Gamma Delta and our sisters has only deepened since my Senior Rededication. Our Purpose continues to guide how I serve our Fraternity, how I lead in my professional life and how I show up in my relationships with family and friends. For most of us, our letters were worn for the first time on a college campus, but their meaning continues to grow far beyond it.

As we celebrate our newest alumnae in the Class of 2026, I hope each of us reflects on that enduring question: Are you a sorority member, or were you one?

May our answer be proud and confident: I am an Alpha Gamma Delta.

WHAT ARE YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLES? Wendy and Sarah Page are a mother-daughter duo serving as Chapter Advisor and Recruitment Advisor for Beta Xi Chapter at Purdue University, their alma mater.

WHAT'S YOUR OCCUPATION? Wendy: I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate of Purdue University. Most recently, I owned and operated a franchise agency providing in-home non-medical care for the elderly. Sarah: Professional Recruiter.

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER WITH ALPHA GAM? Wendy: My three daughters, Audrey, Sarah, Natalie and I are all Alpha Gam alumnae from Beta Xi Chapter, and consequently, I know several Purdue Alpha Gams. I felt drawn to share my time and unique perspective with our chapter.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Wendy: My husband and I live in Lafayette, Indiana, across the river from Purdue.

Lafayette has many artsy and entrepreneurial people, and I appreciate being surrounded by so much creativity. Sarah: Indianapolis. I love our local restaurants, beautiful walking trails and efficient airport.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Wendy: I am inspired by all the young Alpha Gam women I know, especially the collegiate leaders of Beta Xi who are intelligent, hardworking and grounded and I love how they are raising the Chapter’s standards. Sarah: Living with Purpose – Each of us is born with our own unique passions and talents, and we’re called to utilize those in different ways. I strive to live my purpose each day and am inspired by witnessing others living theirs.

WHAT ARE YOU READING? Wendy: Mark Twain, by Ron Chernow. It’s a tome! Sarah: I’ve been slowly working through Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. It’s dense but worthwhile!

WHAT NEW SKILL HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN? Wendy: I have always wanted to play piano, so I started taking lessons about three years ago. Sarah: Speaking another language.

A FAVORITE ALPHA GAM MEMORY? Wendy: The best memories are the everyday ones of hanging out with my sisters, who are a funny, witty bunch. I loved living in the house. Sarah: My favorite memories are the ones with family. I remember the excitement on my older sister’s face when I came to the Beta Xi house as a New Member on Bid Day! When I moved into the house the following year, my mom knew the directions to my new room better than I did.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2026?

Wendy: Everything! I am grateful for the cadence of my life, all the people in my life and all that we have planned, large and small. Sarah: It will be a busy summer full of wedding celebrations and family time! I’m excited to celebrate and connect with loved ones, near and far.

Alice-Grace Beavers Named Torchbearer

BeaversGamma Nu-University of Tennessee, Knoxville was named as one of nine Torchbearers, UTK's highest student honor, in recognition of leadership, service and Volunteer spirit.

She studied food science with a concentration in medicine and a minor in pre-health professions.

Her honors undergraduate research thesis focused on the relationship between travel time to a hospital, food insecurity and tumor size at diagnosis among breast cancer patients in Appalachia. Read more ®.

Anna Collingwood Receives LBJ Outstanding Student Award

Haley Mowdy Owen Appointed to Texas Young Lawyers

 Haley Mowdy

Owen, UpsilonUniversity of Oklahoma was appointed to a two-year term on the Board of Directors for the Texas Young Lawyers Association.

She represents all young lawyers and law students in the state of Texas on behalf of the district of Dallas and serves on committees to advance initiatives in access to justice, the preservation of the rule of law and the health and well-being of attorneys and law students. “It is an excellent opportunity for me to ‘contribute to the world's work in the community where I am placed’ and utilize the leadership skills I have developed as a collegian, alumna, advisor and VST member of Alpha Gam,” Haley said.

Caroline Henry Reigned at Mardi Gras Ball In February, Caroline Lebon Henry, Epsilon-University of Kentucky, reigned as the 126th Queen of the High Priests of Mithras Mardi Gras Ball during the New Orleans carnival season. The ball is a prestigious, traditional New Orleans Carnival, or bal masqué, historically featuring elaborate, often Shakespearean or mythological themes.

Raising Awareness About What's My Name Foundation and Ridesharing Safety Theta Omega Chapter at the University of South Carolina held its annual Singing for Sami dance competition on March 4 to raise awareness about ridesharing. The event is held in memory of former USC student and Alpha Gamma Delta sister Samantha Josephson, who was killed on March 29, 2019, upon mistakenly entering a car she believed to be her Uber rideshare. After her death, Josephson's family established the What’s My Name Foundation to raise awareness of rideshare safety, primarily by encouraging riders to ask drivers for their name before getting in. Alpha Gamma Delta sisters and other members of USC Greek life gathered to watch their friends perform choreographed dance routines. Read more ®.

Marsha Kitter 50+ Year Red Cross Volunteer

 Marsha

Kitter, Alpha Phi-Marietta College, is one of just four Red Cross volunteers in North Carolina who have served for more than 50 years. She is currently a training services volunteer, a blood donor ambassador and a disaster volunteer for the Red Cross Cape Fear Chapter. She also teaches the Red Cross babysitting course.

Emma Thompson is Apple Blossom Princess

Thompson, Nu EpsilonShenandoah University, was selected as a princess for the 99th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. As a business administration major with a double concentration in marketing and management, she is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, serves as treasurer for Omicron Delta Kappa Collegiate Honor Society and is director of finance for the SU Student Government Association. At Shenandoah, she assisted with community outreach and Buzzy’s food pantry and volunteered at the SPCA. Read more ®.

Gracie Smith Appointed to Communications Role

Smith, Gamma Sigma-Troy University, was appointed as communications Coordinator for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences within the Office of University Relations. Using her background in marketing and hands-on experience with student engagement positions, she will focus on raising the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences’ visibility, strengthening connections with students, alumni, faculty, and the community, and highlighting the inspiring work and programs of the college. Riley Johnson Named Miss Auburn

 Riley Johnson,

Gamma Delta-Auburn University, an elementary education major, was selected as Miss Auburn. Her campaign, “Journey with Johnson,” centered on uplifting others — a theme inspired by both her major and her late father, Jim Johnson, who graduated from Auburn in 1988. She hopes to encourage a campus-wide focus on service and mentorship. Riley’s mother Jean Fallon Johnson, Gamma DeltaAuburn University was Miss Auburn in 1987-1988. Read more ®.

Ann Sasser Brinkman’s Survivor Story

 Ann Sasser

Brinkman, who initiated with Psi Chapter at the University of Alabama and graduated as a member of Gamma Zeta Chapter at the University of Memphis, is profiled in a St. Jude Survivor story. In the summer of 1989, she was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia – the rare, more aggressive kind – and it had already spread beyond her bone marrow. Read more ®.

DaeLynn Diver Named Miss Indiana University  DaeLynn Diver, Beta Delta-Indiana University, was named Miss Indiana University 2026. Her community service initiative is Breaking the Cycle: Supporting Children with Parents of Substance Abuse. She is on the IU Redstepper Dance Team, is a neuroscience major and chemistry minor on the premed track. Learn more ®.

Addressing Food Insecurity Seton Hall University recognized the Zeta Tau Chapter as a service partner, with the chapter making regular contributions to highlight food insecurity. Zeta Tau Vice President of Philanthropy Raven Ortiz said, “Our philanthropy is about more than just events or fundraising. It’s about consistent service and long-term impact. Whether we’re volunteering at Jesus Saves, organizing drives or raising awareness, our goal is to create meaningful change in our community. It brings our members together around something bigger than ourselves and reminds us why service is such a core part of who we are.” In March, the chapter sorted jackets to distribute to people in need in Newark, New Jersey, then they prepared and gave out socks, sandwiches and drinks at the soup kitchen. fraternity updates Fraternity Housing Corporation Seeks Director Do you want to get involved with the FHC? Now is your chance!

The Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC) Board is seeking candidates for an open Director position.

Established in 2010, the FHC elevates the experience of Alpha Gamma Delta members by providing spaces that promote community, learning and growth. The FHC Board operates as a separate oversight organization in the Alpha Gamma Delta enterprise that casts the vision, sets the standards and monitors the performance of the professionally led corporation.

Chapter Leaders Unite at Summit RECRUITMENT AND MARKETING SUMMIT

In February, Alpha Gam hosted three Recruitment and Marketing Summits to help chapters get ready to grow. Southeastern Summit in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Western Summit in Boise, Idaho and Midwestern Summit in Indianapolis, Indiana allowed Recruitment and Marketing leaders to take chapter growth to the next level.

More than just training, each Summit served as an opportunity to connect. Officers and advisors built meaningful relationships, shared challenges and learned from one another’s successes. By the end of the Summit, participants gained a clear vision for their term, proven strategies and renewed energy to elevate their chapter’s presence and performance on campus.

100 Chapters Visited by Leadership Consultants The 2025-2026 Leadership Consultant Team visted 100 chapters over the past year with a total visit count of 176. They wrapped up their travels in March after 101 member experience visits, 63 growth visits, five extension visits and seven new chapter experience visits. Thank you to the LCs for their service to the Fraternity and their impact on our collegiate chapters.

Why I Serve

Alpha Gamma Delta could not be the organization it is today without the dedication of the many alumnae volunteers.

We celebrate our volunteers through the year.

Serving the Fraternity has been such a gratifying part of my life. Volunteering has been my way of honoring all the love and blessings I’ve received as a collegian and an alumna.

I serve because connecting with and investing in sisters has always been one of the most meaningful parts of the sorority experience for me.

Being able to continue that as an alumna has provided me with a sense of purpose in ways I never imagined.

Alpha Gamma Delta has influenced every phase of my life, and I am not sure how not to serve.

Ever since I traveled as a Leadership Consultant in 1999 I have served in various roles locally and Fraternity-wide. I hope to shape our next generations of Alpha Gams the way alumnae have mentored, inspired and shaped my personal and professional development.

With 89 percent of our collegiate members sharing their experiences in Alpha Gamma Delta last year, we’re celebrating new standards in listening to our members and leading with results. In addition to measuring key sisterhood factors, the Alpha Gam Sisterhood Survey provides insight into member satisfaction, health and wellness behaviors, educational outcomes and member demographics.

When Alpha Gamma Delta's Founders met in New York 122 years ago, the United States was 128 years old.

Now in 2026, as the United States celebrates 250 years—its Semiquincentennial, the Quarterly revisits the 1976 International Reunion Day address, by Margaret (Madge) McConnell, Omicron– University of California-Berkeley, who initiated in 1922, and graduated in 1926.

Madge opened her address with historical background on the Bicentennial celebration taking place in communities across the U.S. that year. She talked about Alpha Gamma Delta's founding and introduced the anniversary of the birth of Fraternity in 1776, the year of Phi Beta Kappa's founding.

As Madge spoke of those who made independence possible for the United States, she recognized efforts not only to break away from England, but also to overcome deep internal disagreements and threats to unity. It is fitting to honor their courage and steadfast resolution, she said. Despite their challenges, the representatives managed to reach agreement and establish a lasting union.

“When those eleven eager, dedicated girls of Syracuse University met at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Wellesley P. Coddington the evening of May 30, 1904, any doubts as to the purpose of their gathering had been dispelled. Fraternities had existed at Syracuse since 1871, but starting a new one was a venturesome prospect that faced many difficulties. Under the wise and gracious guidance of the Coddingtons, Alpha Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta came to life and was duly noted in the Syracuse Daily Orange with the brief statement ‘A new Greek letter fraternity has been organized among the women of the University… followed by the names of our 11 Founders.’

Thus was established another ‘federation’ – a sisterhood that has over the past 72 years burgeoned from its first chapter to its 113th and spread ‘from sea to shining sea’ across the broad expanses of Canada and the United States.

Another Bicentennial is being observed this year. The ‘Greek System’ saw its beginnings on December 5, 1776, when the forerunner of all social and professional fraternities, Phi Beta Kappa, was established on the campus of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. It is fitting that we weave the threads of these three foundings together and, strengthened and warmed by their triumphs, look to the future.

WHAT CAN WE CLAIM AS THE SPIRIT OF ALPHA GAMMA DELTA IN 1976?

I believe the answer lies very simply in the ideals we have chosen to guide our lives: Ideals — which not only draw us together in a bond of personal dedication but reach outwards in a spirit of willingness to understand and help those around us; Ideals — which open our minds to the eternal wonders of our expanding universe, never allowing us to be content with only the mediocre or the partially accomplished; Ideals – which balance our judgments so that we may always make allowance for the opinions and feelings of others, no matter how much at variance they seem to be, and temper our actions accordingly.

These three precepts guide us to a Way of Life. It is a Way that may have many turnings: it may lead us to a brilliant career, to further study in a chosen field, to a happy home and thriving family – it may even lead to the White House. Whether humble or exalted, it is a path that many of us have trod with high hopes and convictions, from undergraduate days to the fulfillment of our alumnae responsibilities.

Phi Beta Kappa 250 Years Since the Birth of Fraternity Since its founding in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has celebrated excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and championed freedom of thought.

As the first Greek-letter organization, Phi Beta Kappa's founding marks the birth of Fraternity.

History of Phi Beta Kappa Five students at the College of William & Mary founded Phi Beta Kappa during the American Revolution to advance their chosen motto, “Love of Learning is the Guide to Life.” A new nation would require institutions – cultural as well as political – as a grounding force and elevating influence in turbulent times. What began as a secret debating society in the midst of war became something very different over the next two centuries. Phi Beta Kappa grew along with American higher education into an organization grounded in liberal (as in the Latin word for free) arts and sciences, learning and freedom of inquiry. The Society’s work now attests to the lifelong value of an education that fosters scientific inquiry, liberty of conscience, critical thinking and creative endeavor for all.

In this year, then as we renew our pledges of allegiance to our country, to the fraternal pattern of which we are a part, and to Alpha Gamma Delta, there is a special message for us—and I think particularly for our undergraduates – in the words of advice given to the students at the Sorbonne University in Paris by Louis Pasteur: ‘Do not let yourselves be tainted by a depracting and barren skepticism; do not let yourselves be discouraged by the sadness of certain hours which pass over nations. Live in the serene peace of laboratories and libraries. Say to yourselves first: What have I done for my instruction? – and as you gradually advance, What have I done for my Country? – until the time comes when you may have the immense happiness of thinking you have contributed in some way to the progress and good of humanity.’”

Fox Valley Alumnae Club ILLINOIS

Fox Valley Alumnae Club members are always willing to step in wherever and whenever needed. They take great pride in supporting one another, whether it’s helping at an event or showing up for a sister in need. During times of illness, injury or when someone simply needs a helping hand or even just a listening ear, members come together without hesitation. This spirit of care and connection is never seen as a burden, but rather as a genuine and thoughtful expression of our sisterhood and unwavering support.

Club members currently represent 15 different collegiate chapters.

What areas/regions does your chapter cover? The Fox Valley Alumnae Club serves members throughout the Fox Valley area, spanning a wide range of Illinois cities. Our members are incredibly loyal and continue to actively support our club, even after relocating beyond the Fox Valley area.

Karen Clutter Hughes, a 1972 graduate of the University of Wisconsin and initiated into the Beta Chapter, has been a dedicated member of the Fox Valley Alumnae Club for more than 44 years, generously serving as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Ways and Means Chairman and Calling Chairman. She currently serves as an officer for the Chicago Area Council (CAC), which plans IRD, and has been a CAC delegate for more than nine years.

Karen said she finds great fulfillment in giving back and values the opportunity to stay actively connected to a community of sisters through the alumnae club. She especially appreciates the club’s philanthropic efforts and enjoys participating in activities and shared experiences that make a positive impact.

The alumnae club has provided her with a meaningful way to remain involved, build lasting friendships and continue embracing the values of Alpha Gamma Delta.

What is your chapter’s favorite meeting spot?

Wherever we gather for two of our most special events, the Annual Salad Supper and Officer Installation or our Christmas Family Giving gift-wrapping event. Through our Christmas Family Giving we wrap donated gifts for multiple families and organizations in need. Being able to provide joy to others during the holiday season fills our hearts with love and reminds us of the true spirit of giving.

Philanthropy: The Fox Valley Alumnae Club's Annual Charity Garage Sale has grown to include spring and fall sales. The club consistently exemplifies the true purpose of sisterhood through teamwork and shared dedication making it not only a successful fundraiser but also a meaningful way to connect with our community.

What collegiate chapters do you support, and what do you do? Fox Valley Alumnae Club supports Beta Phi Chapter at Valparaiso University in Indiana through many special projects. We recently organized a card-making project to connect more intentionally with our undergraduate chapter. Our alumnae club gathered to create personalized cards for each undergraduate member during finals week and the holiday season.

Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter NORTH CAROLINA

Founded in 1948, the Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter is proud to live out the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose together for life. Sisters from more than 45 undergraduate chapters are included in the Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter directory and members span generations with ages ranging from their 20s to their 90s. Sisters are hard-working, fun-loving and extremely kind. They volunteer with local food pantries, food banks, clothing banks, homeless lunch ministries, food shuttles, career coaching, animal shelters, newcomers clubs, election polls, churches, schools, alumni mentor groups and collegiate Alpha Gamma Delta chapters. Our sisters would do anything to help their community and each other. Their joy and generosity is contagious.

What areas/regions does your chapter cover?

Our chapter covers the eastern area of North Carolina, which includes Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and other surrounding areas. Most sisters live within an hour radius of Raleigh.

Favorite meeting spot? We love to meet at our sisters’ homes for meetings each month, especially when we get to try to guess how many squirrels they have on display! We also have a “lunch bunch” monthly gathering — a favorite is Coquette Brasserie in Raleigh.

Philanthropy: The Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter sponsors a canned fruit shelf at our local food pantry.

Sisters bring canned fruit donations to every gathering, including meetings, sisterhood events and informal get-togethers. We also create soup kits frequently for the same food pantry. Since the 1970s, fresh shelled pecan sales have been our primary fundraiser. It’s only fitting that as squirrels we fundraise by selling nuts!

What collegiate chapters do you support, and what do you do? We have three adopt-a-chapters: Nu Gamma — East Carolina University (ECU), Theta Mu — University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) and Theta Omicron — Western Carolina University (WCU).

Sisters are advisors and we offer encouragement, guidance and donations when possible. We also attend Senior Rededication, IRD and Annual Achievement events.

Crouse Hall on Syracuse’s campus is lovingly called “Hogwarts” since it looks like a castle and plays chimes every day.

Alpha recently attended the Midwestern Recruitment and Marketing Summit and received an award for reaching campus total.

Alpha Gamma Delta’s 11 Founders officially established our Fraternity and established its first chapter on May 30, 1904. The Alpha Chapter at Syracuse University is thriving today as our Fraternity has grown to establish more than 200 chapters and welcome more than 200,000 sisters. Known for top-tier college sports programs and robust research programs, Syracuse University is home to 265 collegiate members. Chapter members are involved across campus and members cherish the one-of-akind bond that makes our campus feel that much more special.

At the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (U of M) and located behind the big red door lives our Delta Chapter! U of M is the ninth-largest college campus in the United States, but Delta members have found the connections and community of Alpha Gam make them feel right at home.

As a chapter, we love to support Alpha Gam’s philanthropic focus of fighting hunger and host two signature philanthropy evets each year. In the fall we host Nacho Night and in the spring, we have our Pancake Breakfast, a 35-year tradition! The Greek community at U of M is known for its many friendly competitions and supportive environment. Our members love to participate in other organizations’ events ranging from sports to philanthropy events and to our favorite, a lip sync battle.

Whether we are hosting Alpha Gam events or attending and supporting other Greek community or university events, it is important for us to be involved!

Alpha Gam at WCU connects and brings so many people together. As a chapter, we emphasize taking the time to know and care for every member. The Women Who Make Sorority Life Feel Like Home The House Directors and House Managers, usually referred to as “House Moms,” are the oftentimes-unsung hero of an Alpha Gam home. The day-to-day of a House Mom is ever-changing and ranges from managing facility operations to navigating resident emergencies, but perhaps their most vital role can’t be captured in a job description: House Moms ensure Alpha Gam truly feels like a home away from home.

DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES The live-in House Director or Manager oversees the critical daily operations of the chapter house such as overseeing housekeepers or responding to resident emergencies.

Additionally, House Moms manage the maintenance and repairs of the crucial systems in our homes, including but not

limited to plumbing, electrical, heating/cooling systems, life safety systems, access systems, alarm systems, Wi-Fi and much more!

“I oversee facility operations, coordinate with vendors, support our awesome kitchen staff, manage the ongoing maintenance needs and ensure that the house runs smoothly.

And then sometimes it is just a member with questions, and they need to talk to someone, so I am there for them to talk,” says Ally Hesse, House Director at Alpha-Syracuse University.

“I try to be a sounding board.

Let them talk it out. You do not always have to have the answer for the members, but just being available is important”.

LASTING MEMORIES AND MOMENTS When making Alpha Gam facilities feel like home, events and traditions make all the difference.

FHC House Moms host multiple events a year, such as movie

nights or holiday parties, many of which have become annual traditions.

“Ronda [House Mom] always has fun things at house dinners, her dogs are amazing, and she is the most genuine person. She gives good advice for events and helps us execute them well,” says Taylor Snyder, Sophomore at Upsilon-The University of Oklahoma. Ronda Walker, House Director at Upsilon Chapter, has hosted various events this year such as fire safety training and a move-in welcome party.

“Whenever I talk to parents, I always mention that I am here for the girls. Anything they need, I am always here. Someone is here for their kid and is going to help them whenever they need it,” says Ronda. Ronda also provides support through her adorable pups, Mia and Starsky. The golden retriever duo is always there for members, good days and bad.

Did You Know?

MEMBER IMPACT There are currently three FHC chapters that have part-time House Managers serving as House Moms. These House Managers are typically graduate students or young alumnae working on campus. Even though House Managers serve chapters with a smaller number of live-ins, their impact is still felt through their mentorship, guidance or simple acts of kindness.

“Making myself more present around the house, not even in an official capacity, just casually, has definitely helped build relationships and create

a comfortable atmosphere throughout the house,” says Madison Heyder, House Manager at Xi-Illinois Wesleyan University. Madison also works full-time in the Office of Student Involvement at Illinois Wesleyan.

Both Madison and Ally are in their first years with Alpha Gam, and as young professionals, their experiences bring a new perspective to the House Mom role.

“I think it gives me an advantage because I am so young, it makes relating to the women a lot easier and they’re able to come to me about things because not so long ago I was in a similar position as some of them,” Ally said.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Being the House Mom means helping create an atmosphere where members feel safe and comfortable. For most members, this is their first time

being away from their parents and the homes they grew up in.

It is imperative that our spaces give them a sense of stability and connection.

“There's the physical aspect of being at home, trying to make sure our spaces are not just aesthetically pleasing but also cozy. I always remind members that this is their house, and they are meant to use it,” said Marianne Van Winkle, Beta Xi Chapter House Director.

Marianne has spent nine years with Alpha Gam, first working at Delta Epsilon-University of California, Los Angeles before moving to her current role with Beta Xi Chapter at Purdue University.

"I do not pretend to know everything, but that is what I love about the job," Marianne said. "There is always room to grow and learn. The members teach me stuff all the time. It is truly a unique experience.”

The FHC has 15 House Directors and three House Managers on staff. Outside of the FHC, local House Corporations employ an additional seven House Directors.

House Moms have their own apartments in the facilities. While each is a bit different, these spaces typically include a living/office area, private bathroom, laundry facilities and a kitchenette.

FHC House Directors and Managers CAN be Alpha Gams! We currently have five FHC House Directors or Managers who are members.

House Moms are a variety of different ages with a broad range of backgrounds, from recent graduates to former teachers and social workers.

She is the proud mom of two and serves on the board of the Orange County Alumnae Chapter.

Alpha Gam Finds Success by Returning to Her Roots Lora McLaughlin Peterson, Epsilon Kappa-Pittsburg State University, has called the Los Angeles area home for the past several decades, but as a fifth-generation Kansan, her Midwestern roots and values remain central to her identity. The self-proclaimed grocery-store talker has built a successful brand—LORAfied—and a mass social media following on her down-to-earth style and practical “fancy yet frugal” lifestyle that harkens back to her humble upbringing.

Even before LORAfied grew to a social media following of 2.8 million, Lora had always dreamed big. As a high school student, she landed an internship with a local TV news station simply by being herself: making friends at every opportunity, working hard and not being afraid to take a chance. That’s exactly how she landed her first journalism gig after college. While working as a flight attendant, Lora spotted renowned sports journalist Fred Roggin on her flight and introduced herself, sharing her ambition to become a TV journalist.

By the following week, she had launched what would become a decades-long, Emmy Award-winning career in broadcast news.

“I don’t know where the guts came from,” she joked, but she yet again credits her Midwestern work ethic.

“There’s a saying, ‘the harder I work, the luckier I get.’

I live by that.”

In 2021, working hard to balance life as a mom of three kids and the challenges of the global health pandemic, Lora found herself in need of a creative outlet. With her oldest daughter’s encouragement to return to her roots, Lora started posting to social media her “cliff notes version of home economics,” real-life moments of how she manages life as a working mom on a budget. The more authentic her posts—owning up to the fact that she doesn’t use fancy ingredients, or that she likes to shop at Walmart and Target—the more her following grew.

“With everything coming at us 90 miles an hour, we have become wired to feel shame if we don’t look a certain way, or don’t use a certain product,” Lora said. “But the more I started being myself, the more people came. There’s an audience for real life, and that’s what I’m here for.”

After two and a half years dedicating herself full-time to her craft, developing ideas and learning how to manage and capture content, Lora received her breakthrough when she was asked to share her tips and hacks on the popular NBC morning program, “Today with Hoda and Jenna.”

“With everything coming at us 90 miles an hour, we have become wired to feel shame if we don’t look a certain way, or don’t use a certain product. But the more I started being myself, the more people came. There’s an audience for real life, and that’s what I’m here for.”

“That was a massive turning point,” Lora said. “That’s when Scooter [my husband] sat up a little straighter and started sharpening up pencils.”

For the last couple of years, Lora has devoted herself to translating her brand into her first published work, “The LORAfied Cookbook: Easy Recipes and Budget-Friendly Hacks to Feed Your Whole Family Well.” The book released on May 5.

“It’s harder than birth!” she quipped about the editing process.

Jokes aside, Lora is incredibly proud of the work and even more excited about connecting with fans during her 12-city book tour, which includes New York, Atlanta, Texas, and brings her back to her home state of Kansas.

“The part of the tour I am most excited about is getting out there and meeting the followers. I haven’t met a follower yet that I haven’t wanted to go to lunch with,” Lora said, adding that she really hopes she gets to meet and connect with fellow Alpha Gams. “That support system is not like any other.”

Lora's Lemon Chia Pudding When I was little, I loved the lemon pie filling my mom, Norma Jean, made so much that I couldn’t wait for it to cool down! I remember taking a spoonful of the thick and still-warm filling and eating it just like a lollipop.

This chia pudding has all the same flavors and is perfect for breakfast.

Don’t spend time focusing on the chia seeds, which act as a thickener and make you feel full. You’ll end up eating this one because you love it. The protein and fiber and other healthy stuff will just be a bonus! Make it the night before as a breakfast—or an afternoon pick-me-up—and it’s ready when you are the next day.

Ingredients

1 cup macadamia nut milk, almond milk or other milk of choice 10 drops liquid stevia or 1 tablespoon maple syrup, honey or agave (or to taste) Zest and juice of 1 lemon (see Hack) 1⁄4 cup chia seeds Fresh or frozen berries or chopped fruit (such as kiwi or mango), for topping, optional

Mix the milk, stevia, lemon zest and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Add the chia seeds and whisk well.

Alternatively, place all the ingredients in a pint-size jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake vigorously.

Let the mixture set for about 15 minutes, until it begins to gel. Then give it another stir or shake to break up any clumps, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or up to 6 days.

Add any toppings right before eating.

Hack: Juicing a Lemon

Here’s the easiest way ever to juice a lemon requiring only a wooden or metal skewer or a chopstick. Roll the lemon around the counter to soften it up a bit for easier squeezing. Then stick the sharp end of a skewer into one end of the lemon, about two inches into the peel, down to the pulp. Remove the skewer, place the hole over a bowl and start squeezing—no cutting required and no seeds to fish out! The whole lemon will still be intact for easy zesting (I use a microplane). If you only need a splash, wrap up the lemon in plastic and stick it in the fridge until you need it again.

Hydration and Nutrition During the Summer Heat To stay healthy this summer, prioritize hydration by drinking plenty of water and eating waterrich foods like watermelon, cucumber and celery. Protect your skin by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunglasses. Avoid peak sun (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and exercise in the early morning or evening.

HYDRATION & NUTRITION Drink Early and Often: Women should aim for 92 ounces (11.5 cups) of fluid daily, including water-rich foods.

FROM THE ALPHA GAMMA DELTA ARCHIVES COLLECTION: FOUNDER GRACE MOSHER HARTER'S MORTARBOARD The mortarboard hat, a staple of graduation, stems from medieval European academic, clerical, and stonemason traditions, evolving into a symbol of scholarship and knowledge.

Grace Mosher was born in Parish, New York in 1883.

Her energetic personality led her to the Fraternity where she served as Vice President and helped with the installation of Gamma Chapter-Wesleyan University. Grace's daughter Margaret Harter Sanders, and granddaughter, Susan Dee Sanders, were initiated into the Alpha Chapter at the 1964 Convention. Grace Mosher Harter entered Chapter Grand on July 25, 1978, at the age of 95.
