THE MISSION

The Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly magazine serves as a forum of communication to rekindle, sustain and excite member loyalty and interest through celebrating sisterhood, sharing our stories and recognizing and acknowledging individual and chapter/ club accomplishments. It also serves as a permanent record and archive, documenting the Fraternity.

I always look forward to the transition from winter to spring, with its promise of longer days, warmer weather and sunshine. The return of springtime brings more opportunities to incorporate evening walks into my weekly routine, which is one of my favorite ways to enhance both my physical and mental health. This Spring issue of the Quarterly is focused on women’s health—an important topic for all of us.

Our Purpose encourages us to “develop and prize health and vigor of body,” a sentiment that continues to resonate with women today. As women, we encounter unique health concerns. It can be easy to prioritize other people or things, like family, work or school, over our own well-being. As you read this issue, I encourage you to think about what steps you can take to prioritize your health. Perhaps that means scheduling the annual check-up you’ve been putting off, exploring stress reduction techniques like meditation or journaling, or finding creative ways to incorporate more physical activity into your day, such as taking a local fitness class or a short walk during breaks.

Let’s embrace this season of renewal and commit to prioritizing our health and well-being.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of visiting Auburn University to join the Gamma Delta Chapter and AuburnOpelika Alumnae Chapter to celebrate the return of Miss America, Abbie Stockard, to her campus. It was heartwarming to see Abbie reunite with her chapter sisters amid her busy travels across the United States. Hearing her share how Alpha Gamma Delta has been instrumental in her journey to the Miss America crown was truly inspiring. Her passion for advocacy in healthcare as a pediatric nursing student inspired me. Her dedication to helping others is an excellent example of how we can all positively impact our communities and the world.

In the pages of this issue, you will read more about Abbie and other recent Alpha Gam pageant winners, along with their perspectives about what health and vigor of body means to them. I encourage you to think about this question as well: what does it mean to you? Remember, small steps can lead to big changes. Let’s embrace this season of renewal and commit to prioritizing our health and well-being.

Empowering Women to Lead

The Miss America brand mission is “Empowering Women to Lead” in every area of life from philanthropy, business, arts, politics, education and more. Miss America and Miss America’s Teen local and state ambassadors contribute thousands of community service hours annually, raising funds for philanthropic partners.

Abbie Stockard Crowned Miss America

Abbie Stockard, Miss America 2025, is a 22-year-old dancer and choreographer born and raised in Alabama. She is a senior at Auburn University in the College of Nursing and a member of the Gamma Delta Chapter. Join us in an exclusive conversation touching on women’s health, sisterhood and making an impact.

As Miss America, how do you use your service initiative to impact the world?

When I was nine years old, I met my best friend, Maddie. She lit up my world with her energy and laughter from the first moment. We were just kids—third graders who became best friends, my partner in every childhood adventure. Maddie isn’t just my friend; she is my family. But even as a kid, I noticed Maddie had her struggles. She often went to the nurse’s office, took pills before meals, and sometimes had a cough that wouldn’t go away. I didn’t think much of it at first—but then came the day Maddie wasn’t in class. At nine years old, you don’t think much about hospitals or sickness until it stares you in the face. When I walked into her hospital room, my heart shattered. It was the first time I understood that Cystic Fibrosis wasn’t just something Maddie had; it was something she battled every single day. That moment changed me. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetically inherited, chronic, life-threatening disease that currently has no cure.

Maddie taught me what it means to be resilient, to fight even when the odds seem stacked against you. Maddie gave me more than friendship—she gave me purpose. As I stood on the Miss America stage this year, I thought of Maddie. For the little girl who taught me that even in the darkest moments, hope shines brightly. Maddie’s story is why I fight for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. She’s not just a statistic; she’s my why, my inspiration, my forever best friend. I have raised $200,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, spearheaded the largest fundraising event in Alabama, and lobbied on Capitol Hill for healthcare legislation. Upon being crowned Miss America, I became a National Ambassador for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, allowing me to amplify my impact further. Maddie has shown me that life on Earth is precious and every day is a blessing. Because of Maddie, I will continue my advocacy work beyond the years of wearing a crown and continue finding ways to get involved and touch the lives of others.

What is an important lesson you’ve learned about the spirit of sisterhood?

I define sisterhood as the affection and loyalty you feel because of the bond you share with other women. Whether through the Miss America Organization or Alpha Gamma Delta, I’m incredibly blessed to have found my forever sisters. Both have been pivotal

in my journey, offering meaningful connections and lifelong bonds. There’s something truly powerful about having a group of women who support you and encourage you to grow and reach your fullest potential.

What does "to develop and prize health and vigor of the body" mean to you?

This line from Alpha Gamma Delta’s Purpose resonates with me as a reminder of the importance of physical and mental well—being. While every woman’s health journey is unique and personal to them, their body is worth investing in every day. “Health and vigor of body” isn’t just about fitness or physical appearance; it’s about pursuing a healthy lifestyle in order to feel strong and confident. As a member of the Auburn University Tiger Paws Dance Team, the official collegiate dance team for Auburn Athletics, I’ve experienced firsthand the importance of a well-rounded, active lifestyle and gotten to share my passion for health and wellness through movement. My best friend’s fight with Cystic Fibrosis has fueled my commitment to advocating for people’s health and creating a world where individuals can grow up healthy and strong, no matter what challenges they face. I plan on using this position of influence to empower individuals to take control of their well-being so they, too, can experience a longer, healthier life.

Abbie Stockard with her Gamma Delta Chapter sisters at a reception they hosted on February 20 during a special Auburn University homecoming event. The day began with an official proclamation from the City of Auburn declaring February 20 as "Abbie Stockard Day."

Is there anything else you would like to share with Alpha Gamma Delta?

Alpha Gamma Delta became my home. As a freshman in college, I was nervous and filled with anticipation, unsure of the future. But from the moment I joined, these women became my family. Alpha Gam gave me a community of like-minded women, my roommates for the next four years of college, and the opportunity to dive deeper into my philanthropic efforts.

What makes my Alpha Gam experience even more special is the legacy I’m a part of. I'm honored to be the fourth in my family to call Alpha Gamma Delta home, following in the footsteps of my mom, sister and cousin. This sisterhood is not just something I was welcomed into—it’s something passed down through our family. Being a part of this legacy has made my time in Alpha Gam even more meaningful, reminding me that sisterhood truly spans beyond our college years. I am so grateful for the strong, inspiring women who helped shape my life and the sisters whose friendships I will cherish for years.

Miss Missouri Champions Media Literacy

Ashley Berry, a member of the Psi Chapter at the University of Alabama, was crowned Miss Missouri in June 2024. She is studying news media and political science.

How do you use your platform to impact the world?

As Miss Missouri, I use my platform to champion media literacy and empower women. Media literacy is essential in today’s digital world, where misinformation is rampant. Through my Media Smart initiative, I teach students how to critically analyze and verify the media they consume, helping them become informed, responsible citizens. By integrating media literacy into education, we can build a generation that interrogates information rather than passively accepting it.

Additionally, I’m passionate about empowering women by promoting their voices and challenging stereotypes. By giving young women the tools to engage with the media critically, I aim to help them take control of their narratives and become confident leaders.

What

is a lesson you’ve learned about the spirit of sisterhood?

The spirit of sisterhood is about lifting each other and supporting one another through challenges and successes. As a member of Alpha Gamma Delta’s Psi Chapter at the University of Alabama, I’ve learned how powerful it is to be part of a community of women who encourage each other to grow and achieve our goals. The Miss America sisterhood shares these same values, with women supporting each other in service, leadership and empowerment. Both sisterhoods have taught me when women come together, we all rise and shine.

What does "to develop and prize health and vigor of body" mean to you?

This line from Alpha Gamma Delta’s Purpose means embracing a holistic approach to well-being. It’s about valuing our physical health, not just for how we look, but for how it enables us to live fully, with energy and resilience. This line encourages us to prioritize fitness, self-care, and mental wellness to be the best versions of ourselves—strong, confident and ready to take on life’s challenges. It reminds us that our health is a foundation for personal growth and supporting the people around us.

Abby Quammen selected as 2024's Miss New York

Psi-University of Alabama | Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre; Minor in Political Science New York University | Master of Business Administration

How do you use your platform to impact the world?

Through my Read to Succeed initiative, I have spent the past decade dedicated to improving literacy rates and ensuring every child has access to the transformative power of reading. I’ve implemented after-school reading programs in Title I public schools across New York. Since the spring of 2024, these efforts have resulted in a 28 percent increase in attendance in third-grade classrooms—an achievement highlighting literacy’s profound impact on student engagement and success.

I was honored to serve as the keynote impact speaker at the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy’s New York Celebration of Reading in November. I proudly represented the next generation of literacy advocates. Sharing the urgency of literacy reform and my vision for the future was a defining moment in my journey.

I am committed to continuing this work by advocating for stronger reading programs, building partnerships with schools, and ensuring underserved communities have the necessary resources. Literacy is the foundation of opportunity, and my goal is to create a movement that transforms lives, empowers communities, and inspires future generations to recognize the power of education.

What is an important lesson you’ve learned about the spirit of sisterhood?

Sisterhood is about support, growth and shared purpose. As an Alpha Gamma Delta sister and in the experiences I’ve shared with my Miss America sisters, I’ve learned that true sisterhood means celebrating each other’s successes, providing encouragement through challenges and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued. The spirit of sisterhood transcends differences and teaches us the power of collective action and love. Whether through personal or professional endeavors, the lessons of loyalty, empathy and collaboration I’ve gained from my sisters have been instrumental in shaping who I am.

What does "to develop and prize health and vigor of body" mean to you?

This line reminds me that our physical and mental well-being is deeply tied to our ability to thrive in all other areas of life. Without a strong foundation of health and vigor, it becomes difficult to fully embrace our potential and meet the demands of leadership, service and personal growth.

As a singer, I’ve learned firsthand that my body is my instrument—it requires proper nutrition, regular exercise, adequate rest and mindfulness to perform at its best. I’ve also discovered that mental health is equally vital; maintaining balance and practicing self-care allows me to approach challenges with clarity and resilience.

To me, this line in our Purpose is not just about individual well-being but also about the example we set for others. By prioritizing self-care and embracing a healthy lifestyle, we empower ourselves to lead with strength and confidence while inspiring those around us to do the same. It’s a reminder that true wellness is holistic, encompassing physical, mental and emotional health, and it’s essential for creating a life of impact and fulfillment.

Miss Virginia Teen Spreading Smiles

In July 2024, Cassidy Lee was crowned Miss Virginia Teen at a pageant in Roanoke, Virginia. She enrolled at the University of Alabama in August and joined the Psi Chapter. In January, she competed in Miss America’s Teen in Orlando.

How do you use your platform to impact the world?

Through the Miss America Teen organization’s pillar of service, I have developed a lifelong philanthropic purpose of providing care to those impacted by cleft conditions. From attending Operation Smile surgical programs in South America to walking the Miss America stage in honor of individuals with cleft lip and palates, I strive to spread smiles across local, state and national communities. I utilize my platform to hold surgery fundraisers, promote cleft education through social media outreach and increase facial difference inclusivity by participating in advocacy events. Over the years, heartwarming patient interactions and eye-opening experiences have inspired me to create a cleft awareness podcast titled Every Smile Has a Story and publish a cleft-inclusive children’s coloring book titled The Smile Sketchbook, which I hope will bridge the gap of cleft representation across the world. The job of Miss Virginia’s Teen has presented me with a podium of outreach I will continue to use each and every day to advocate for the cause held most close to my heart.

What is a lesson you’ve learned about the spirit of sisterhood?

Growing up as an only child, I dreamed of having a sister. Now, as an Alpha Gamma Delta at the University of Alabama, I am incredibly blessed to call hundreds of the most uplifting, ambitious, compassionate and genuine girls my chosen sisters. Learning how to be a college student at UA while prepping for the Miss America Teen competition was a smooth transition largely made possible because of the strong spirit of sisterhood in the chapter. From helping me prepare with mock interviews, to sending good luck texts before each phase of the competition, their love and encouragement demonstrated the true meaning of being sisters. I continue to be inspired by their commitment to loving, leading and lasting.

Is there anything else you would like to share with Alpha Gamma Delta?

As a young girl, I always knew I wanted to join a sorority but could never have imagined the positive and everlasting impact it has had on my life. Because of Alpha Gamma Delta, I have created lifelong friendships with the kindest girls, deepened my love for service, specifically by helping fight hunger, grown in my professional career because of on-campus connections, and found a home away from home. I am forever thankful to represent the core values of Alpha Gam and am incredibly grateful for the family it has given me.

DR. DARYL APPLETON

Dr. Daryl Appleton is a modern-day pioneer in wellness who is forging her path with a lifelong spirit of sisterhood. She is reshaping corporate and individual approaches to high performance and well-being in her career. She has been called a “real-world Wendy Rhoades,” a reference to the fictional character on the TV show “Billions.” But Dr. Daryl is as real as it gets. She is a consultant, advisor and in-house coach to Fortune 500 executives, Ivy League surgical programs, thought leaders, specialists and professional athletes worldwide, and her firm is renowned for its exclusive clientele.

Earlier this year, Vogue recognized her podcast, “Feelings and Other F Words,” as a leading mental health podcast in the top five percent globally. This spring, she was featured in ELLE magazine’s Modern Wellness Guide, where she discussed the importance of rethinking success and prioritizing mindful practices. She emphasized how real power comes from self-awareness, setting boundaries, and enjoying the journey, not just grinding endlessly. She advocates for “success without sacrifice,” challenging the prevailing hustle culture.

Find out how this alumna found her Alpha Gam community and how you can expand yours.

TELL

US ABOUT YOUR PATH TO ALUMNAE INITIATION:

I had a friend in Rhode Island who was connected to Alpha Gam, and she spoke so highly about the organization and brought me into the fold for International Convention in 2018. I went to college in the Northeast, and we didn’t have Greek life at my school. I played basketball in college and was always drawn to sisterhood and connection to a shared goal. Over several years of working with Alpha Gam, I got to know the women on staff and collegiate and alumnae members. I was taken by how smart, professional and wonderful everyone I met was. There was something incredibly energetic about being around this group of women. Seeing everyone’s dedication to Alpha Gam made me want to be part of something bigger than myself.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO FIND YOUR COMMUNITY?

As women, we need community; it’s not a matter of how or when you do it; it’s a matter of just finding one somewhere. You can see it in research and practice psychologically, anthropologically, and evolutionarily; we need community more than we think. It’s so important. I think part of it is women tend to carry so much alone, and we need to unload to someone somewhere; we also need to grow and be challenged and supported by people who may not always “get it” but at least seek to understand. I was lucky to have that in athletics, and I’m even more fortunate to have it professionally, personally and socially now through my Alpha Gam sisters.

YOU WERE RECENTLY QUOTED IN ELLE MAGAZINE AND FEATURED BY FORBES, TODAY, HUFFPOST, FOX NEWS AND THE NEW YORK POST. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE YOUR MESSAGE REACH A NATIONAL AUDIENCE?

It’s a little dreamlike! I am incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to have such a wide reach. I have realized that I am who I am, whether I’m sitting in front of you or being quoted in a magazine, so I tend to make a point not to filter things and say what is on my mind. I am honestly just grateful anyone wants to hear anything that comes out of my mouth.

WHAT MAKES WELLNESS MORE THAN JUST A HOT TOPIC?

We are all in a place where everyone craves a better, smarter way to process and feel, and what I have come to realize is everyone has slightly different ideas about what wellness means to them. I think wellness needs to be operationally defined. For me, wellness and well-being are not about “making life easier.” It’s not about microdosing wellness in the creams you use, the yoga classes you go to or the walks you take. For me, wellness is truly understanding that in a moment of chaos, you have a choice, and a skill set you can use to navigate difficult times. That’s true well-being because if you can do that, you can push yourself to a path of peace, which I think is something we all strive for.

I am so glad that we are starting to get away from toxic positivity where we pretend everything’s fine and we’re replacing it with statements like, “This is hard, and I am tough. I can do hard things. Here’s my plan to move forward.” That’s what I try to bring to people: well-being as a lifestyle beyond the purchases you make and how you move your body, but truly a mindset in which you live your life.

family.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS RELATED TO SISTERHOOD?

I love the idea of women taking control of their lives in any capacity. Promoting well-being to groups of any kind is unbelievably valuable. Sometimes, I see resistance, or snags, in groups because everyone needs something different. There is a saying in therapy that “you can only be as healthy as the unhealthiest person in the relationship,” which is why we sometimes see issues in chapters or friend groups. People need to hear that well-being isn’t just a spa day but also things like conflict resolution skills. I want sisters to lean into things that make them grow, which is different than making them feel comfortable. Comfortable can often get misconstrued with well-being and wellness. Sometimes, doing something that is the healthiest for you or your sisters is not easy, and it’s not comfortable; it’s getting outside your comfort zone to get to a place of evolution.

YOU’VE PRESENTED KEYNOTES FOR ALPHA GAM AND WORKED WITH INDIVIDUAL CHAPTERS. WHAT HAS MADE THOSE INTERACTIONS MOST MEANINGFUL?

It’s always wonderful how well-prepared Alpha Gams are when they attend meetings and events. I’m truly in awe of the thoughtfulness, interest and intrigue our women bring. Alpha Gam women are special because they’re high performers, and it speaks very much to my own high-performing nature because I see a lot of myself in them. It’s nice

to be able to speak directly to that and help people navigate difficult times or times of growth in a way that’s strategic and has action. I LOVE working with Alpha Gams. Every interaction I have always leaves me looking forward to the next time we are together.

YOU GIVE BACK AS A VOLUNTEER, YOU HAVE A CAREER AND YOU HAVE A FAMILY. HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE?

I think I have learned that there’s no such thing as balance. If my goal is a balanced lifestyle, I will never get there. For me, it’s about alignment. I need alignment in my life to help remind me what brings joy or aligns with my mission, values and who I am, even when things are tough. I have four-year-old twins, so I constantly shift priorities and realign them as they relate to my work and life. I am slowly realizing I can do anything, but I cannot do everything, especially not at the same time. Ultimately, I see that alignment is not only important; it’s a system that I can use to help me do all the things I love in a more productive way. It’s taken me years and years and years to know how to do that, but the first step is understanding you don’t need a life in perfect harmony or perfect balance; it just needs to be aligned.

WHAT’S A LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED AS A MOM OF TWINS?

If you think you have extra clothes in the car, you don’t. Check your diaper bag right now and change out the clothes that don’t fit because you will need them. I’ve learned not every strategy works,

Dr. Daryl Appleton and her

and that’s okay. After having kids, I have become a very strategic person, a very planned person. I’ve learned sometimes it’s okay for things to be messy. It’s okay for things not to go as planned. It’s okay not to answer the phone call; it’s okay for them to wear mismatched shoes. I think being very focused on, and this sounds very corny, but I’ll stand by it, being very focused on the small moments with them has been humbling for me. They’ve taken me to a place where I have had to slow down, and I’ve learned a lot about myself, and I still don’t know it all. Currently, I am truly trying to navigate my own “mom guilt” and ways to honor and be present in all the hats I wear and to make space for myself.

WHATARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TOOR READING?

The Gilded Newport Mysteries series by Alyssa Maxwell. I live right outside Newport, Rhode Island, one of the most beautiful places. I’m a huge history buff, so I’m very into the Gilded Age, the history and industry, and how it shaped America. The series covers a murder at each of the mansions and goes to the history of the people living there, the Vanderbilts and JPMorgan, etc. It’s fun, and it’s nice escapism.

On the professional side of things, I bought “The Laws of Human Nature” by Robert Greene because I thought I would read it before I had the girls. I’m a big Robert Green fan. He’s very into stoicism. I’m still getting through the nearly 700 pages, so if you get it, you don’t need to read it all at once. I try to keep something academic and something non-academic, and I try not to pressure myself to read everything all the way through and make time to read different things that speak to the different sides of my brain.

WHAT’SA FAVORITE INDULGENCE OR PASTIME?

Before I had children, I enjoyed sleeping. Not seeing 6 a.m. was a beautiful thing. I also love to travel. We just returned from a trip to London and Italy with the girls, which was wonderful (and at times very stressful with two then three-year-olds, but worth every second). I love traveling, seeing new things, and visiting new museums and places.

I also miss being able to get up and go without having major plans! For those without kids, take the flight, get in the car, book the trip! For those with grown kids, take the flight, get in the car, book the trip. Saying it out loud is inspiring me to take my own advice!

PEARLS OF WISDOM:

Sisterhood matters at every stage. The research around female feelings

of loneliness and women needing community is staggering. My advice? Lean into your relationships, make new friendships, and put yourself out there. This is one of the main reasons we started the Alpha Gam Alumnae Circle. We wanted Alpha Gam women to have a hub to connect in meaningful ways. We wanted to create a virtual community to help our women network and find mentors, share wins, get advice, dive into personal and professional development and everything in between.

I have found that the Alpha Gam community is rich with women from all different walks of life, different industries, and different specialties who have done amazing things in their careers and in their lives. Tap in. Put up a post. Reach out on the chat. Ask a question. You never know where it could lead.

A great way to do that is the Alpha Gam Alumnae Circle. The community around you will change, and that’s a good thing. You’ll learn so much about so many people if you’re open and engaged. The best connections I have made professionally and personally — the people who give me the best advice have come from my community.

My involvement is a wonderful opportunity to get to know people I wouldn’t have in my life if I wasn’t an Alpha Gam. It's important to stay open and stay curious — to tap into your community, even if it feels awkward or uncomfortable. Everybody is here for the same thing—sisterhood and being an Alpha Gam lives through all of us in some way. I find it to be almost like, “Take a penny, leave a penny.” If it doesn’t apply, you don’t need it, but you might find something, or you might be able to leave your own pearl of wisdom.

HEIDI AXELROD

Beth is a writer and scholar living in Southern California. She is the proud mom of two and serves on the board of the Orange County Alumnae Chapter.

Health and Vigor of Body: An Alumna’s Journey to Wellness

Heidi Axelrod, Delta Xi-Arizona State University, built a career helping women find wellness. Her nearly two decades as a fitness professional, include operating her own business—Over 40 Personal Training—inspired by her health struggles.

“I know what it feels like to not be comfortable in your own skin,” Heidi said. “I feel drawn to helping others find out what it feels like to feel good about yourself again.”

Heidi began what she refers to as her “second life” shortly after turning 40. Flipping through pictures from her birthday celebration, Heidi didn’t like what she saw. However, what prompted her to take action was not her appearance; it was the physical discomfort she felt while sitting on the floor with her son during a one-hour speech therapy appointment.

“The fact that I was having trouble doing that was very eye-opening to me,” Heidi said. “I wanted to be able to be on the floor and play with my son.”

Heidi began with small changes. She started with a regular yoga practice, which then inspired her to pursue certification as a yoga instructor. During training, Heidi met a woman who managed her own boot camp program and encouraged Heidi to expand her practice beyond yoga. Although Heidi had never participated in an exercise program that involved pushups and weights, in the spirit of her newly adopted mindset of embrancing change she decided to give it a try. The program proved to be a profound source of community and motivation for her.

“Working with others really helped me to build accountability,” Heidi said. “I wasn’t just showing up for myself.”

With her newfound support, Heidi grew stronger—physically and mentally. Bolstered by her developing self-confidence, Heidi embraced opportunity again two years later. She became a certified strength trainer and, after co-leading the boot camp program for seven years, opened her own strength training business. Heidi now helps women at different phases of their

lives—from their 40s to 80s—find the strength and support they need to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“I know the work it takes, but I also have perspective from being on the other side and seeing how my life has changed and opened up,” Heidi said. “I enjoy helping others to experience what it feels like to feel good about yourself again.”

Heidi encourages her clients to start small: pick one or two lifestyle changes to focus on. Micro-goals help make overall change more manageable, she explains. Asking for help is also critical. That’s where Heidi and other fitness and lifestyle coaches come in.

“We sometimes think of trainers as luxuries, but really it’s no different than hiring an accountant to do your taxes,” she said. “We need professionals to help get us started. Some clients I have seen consistently for 17 years, but others I have just helped give the tools they need to learn about nutrition and exercising safely, and I’ve sent them on their way.”

Whether it’s starting an exercise program or simply setting the goal of walking to the mailbox and back, the point is to get started.

“No matter your age, set the goal just to move a little more each day because movement and energy begets energy,” she said. “When we feel like nothing is left in our tank, it’s probably because we are not moving enough. Keeping moving and those repetitive movements will build a foundation for health that you will reap benefits from 20 years from now.

Learn more about Heidi’s story and how to make a healthy lifestyle change at heidiaxelrod.com/

“Small changes have a big impact.“ When I started my journey to become healthier, I started by just walking. Then, I set a goal of running to the mailbox before continuing my walk. Before I knew it, my walks became shorter and the runs longer.”

Fraternity Housing Corporation

THE FHC IS HOLDING SPACE FOR...

In the 15 years since the Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC) began managing the Alpha Chapter house at Syracuse University, the FHC has created spaces where sisters can meet their best friends, prepare for future careers and make lasting memories. These safe and welcoming spaces are an important part of the member experience. Take an inside look at some Alpha Gam signature spaces that make a house a home.

WELLNESS

The FHC started creating wellness spaces for solitary or small group rest and relaxation. So far, the FHC has installed two wellness spaces and plans to establish two additional spaces in the summer of 2025. These spaces include soft, warm lighting, relaxing colors/wallpaper and comfortable seating that allows members to unwind and de-stress. These private spaces can also be reserved for virtual therapy. “Our room operates with a sign-up system coordinated by members. Members use the space when they need privacy for activities such as exams, interviews, therapy or other doctor's appointments, working out or a quiet space to be alone,” said Marianne Van Winkle, House Director at Beta Xi–Purdue University.

Elizabeth Kelly, House Director at Delta Chapter, also sees the benefit of a designated wellness space. "The Wellness Room serves as one of two spots in the house to seek privacy for anything self-care focused, like journaling or meditation, or anything virtual, like exams, doctor appointments or interviews,” she said.

THE OUTDOORS

Whether a chapter has a wrap-around porch or a large patio, an outdoor space is the perfect place for members to gather and enjoy beautiful weather. Alpha Gam colors and comfortable seating make these outdoor spaces a practical addition to the curb appeal of Alpha Gam homes.

STUDY

The FHC partners with the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation to fund study spaces through Educational Area Grants. To date, projects include four grants to fund new construction and 43 grants to upgrade existing spaces through educational furniture and/or Wi-Fi upgrades. To create the perfect study space, the FHC incorporates a combination of traditional, modular study tables and office chairs as well as soft couches and chairs to satisfy all types of students.

GATHERING

Sisterhood is what Alpha Gam is all about! Informal rooms allow our members to gather and create lasting memories. Whether these spaces are used to tune in to a weekly TV show or host a sisterhood event, these spaces are the ultimate social environments. Common identifying pieces include large sectionals, lots of pillows and blankets, area rugs, and plenty of seating for all our sisters!

FITNESS

Staying active while living in the sorority house and attending school is a priority for many members. For Beta Delta, that means having a bike room to train for the largest collegiate bike race in the U.S., the Little 500. Members use this room to practice for the four-person race that spans 25 miles. “We have been training for the April 25 race since we got back to campus in August. Our teammates have completed many smaller races throughout the year, gone on beautiful team rides around Bloomington, and we have a great space to train indoors in the bike room at our house,” said Annie Surette, Team Captain of the ® Beta Delta Chapter Cycling Team. Some chapters have more traditional workout spaces, like the fitness space at Gamma Beta Chapter. Chapter rooms are also a great space to hold dance practice for a campus event or host a fitness class.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE FHC BOARD

The FHC is looking for alumnae to join the Board of Directors. The FHC Board operates as a separate oversight organization in the Alpha Gamma Delta enterprise that casts the vision, sets the standards and monitors the performance of the professionally led corporation. Board membership offers a unique opportunity to contribute to Alpha Gam and to make a positive impact on the lives of our members.

To facilitate effective decision-making and strategic planning, the board seeks a wide variety of backgrounds and experience, which may include asset management, commercial real estate, corporate finance, banking, law, strategic planning, marketing and outreach, construction, property management, entrepreneurship, non-profit management and/or higher education. Broad Fraternity experience is also helpful. Prior experience on a corporate or not-forprofit board is desired. Learn more about the board director position and apply at ® alphagammadeltahousing.org. The application window will close on June 15, 2025, at midnight.

FHC Board Fast Facts

Hot Honey Ground Beef Bowls

Have you tried the hot honey ground beef bowls? Do you want to know why this recipe went viral on Tik Tok?

The meal is packed with protein, healthy fats, fiber and so much flavor. Whether you've already seen the recipe online or not, it's time to give it a try.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Sheet pan

Parchment

Frying pan

INGREDIENTS

2 large sweet potatoes

1 pound lean ground beef

2-3 tablespoons tomato paste

1 tablespoon taco seasoning

1-2 avocados

1 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese

1 1/2 tablespoon hot honey

Salt Pepper Cinnamon

SERVINGS

3-4 bowls

1. Preheat oven and prep pan: Preheat oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.

2. Bake sweet potatoes: Peel and wash, then cut into 1/4" cubes and add to the baking sheet. Lightly spray with oil and season with salt, pepper and a dash of cinnamon. Bake for 30 minutes, flipping halfway. If desired, season again after flipping.

3. Cook the ground beef: Cook the beef in the frying pan on medium high, breaking into small pieces, until fully browned (roughly 5 minutes). Drain and then add tomato paste, taco seasoning and a splash of water. Cook for just 1-2 minutes, stirring to combine ingredients. Remove from heat.

4. Build your bowl: Add sweet potatoes, taco beef, cottage cheese, and fresh avocado to your bowl and finish with a drizzle of hot honey. Enjoy!

Did you know? Your body needs protein to stay healthy. Protein is a critical part of the processes that fuel your energy and carry oxygen throughout your body in your blood. It also helps make antibodies that fight off infection and illness, helps keep cells healthy and create new ones. Plus, protein helps you feel full, so it's often part of a healthy weight-loss plan.

Warm weather and sunshine are right around the corner! Wearing sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect both your skin’s health and appearance. Learn more by following these four reminders from The American Academy of Dermatology Association.

Make sure you choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection that is SPF 30 or higher and water resistant!

Apply sunscreen every day you will be outside. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to areas such as the tops of your feet, lips, ears, neck and the top of your head. You should reapply sunscreen every two hours when you are outdoors or after swimming or sweating.

Why I Serve

“I volunteer for Alpha Gamma Delta because I want to give back to the organization that has given me so much over the past 25 years. Being involved allows me to help shape our Fraternity’s future and ensure it continues to thrive. I also love connecting with sisters across North America as we work together toward a common goal.”

“From university on, Alpha Gamma Delta has played a major role in my life, and the language of The Purpose is truly in my DNA. Whether locally or on VST, I enjoy the opportunity to give back to the Fraternity that has given so much to me, as well as to better my community and beyond through our Fighting Hunger mission. The ultimate benefit for me has been the friendships I’ve made with the sisters with whom I’ve had the honor to work.”

“Alpha Gamma Delta has profoundly impacted my personal and professional growth, and I am passionate about giving back to an organization that has shaped my journey. Volunteering allows me to support the next generation of members by fostering leadership, belonging and personal development. I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute my expertise in education, volunteer support and program development to help the organization continue evolving while staying true to its values. Most importantly, I find fulfillment in building meaningful relationships and creating lasting, positive experiences for members.”

“Volunteering with the Fraternity allows me to give back to Alpha Gam and share what I have learned during my professional career. Working on a committee allows me to collaborate with others on a team to achieve a common goal while learning. It is very exciting for me. Serving on a committee for Alpha Gam also allows me to connect with sisters from across the country, to form meaningful relationships, and learn many ways of accomplishing the same tasks. Most of my closest friends now are those I have met serving as a volunteer for Alpha Gamma Delta. Volunteering has enriched my life in so many ways and made it fuller and more meaningful.”

cheerleader and majored in psychology. She was a counselor at Brookhill Church Camp in Hot Springs, Arkansas and had her own small business, L&M Bandanas.

"There will truly never be enough words to describe Ally and the lasting impact she left on each person she encountered. She gave each person she knew joy, laughter, and the purest most precious love. Ally loved to make people laugh

and she was always ready to have dance parties. She was always making life fun. Everyone who met her felt the joy of Christ radiating through her. She sought after Christ deeply and was truly everyone’s form of sunshine. How lucky is each person who had the opportunity to encounter her. She took with her a piece of everyone’s heart, she will always be missed and time with her will be deeply cherished," said Isabel Viala, Ally's Big Sister.

Miss America, 1947

From the November 1947 issue of the Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly

Barbara Jo Walker, Gamma Zeta–Memphis State College (now University of Memphis)

“Only six short hours before the Memphis presses began rolling off three-inch headlines, before radios began blaring and phones began ringing, Gamma Zeta had been giving a summer rush party. At least, it had been meant to be that, but it had somehow become "Barbara Walker Day," for Gamma Zeta's own Barbara but she wasn't there, she was in Atlantic City, competing for the most coveted feminine crown in the country.”
