Journal Consulting Editor ushers in a new era in kitchen design. Her mission? Help housewives by reducing the time spent on routine tasks. Frederick studied and applied time management principles to create “work zones,” simplifying movement patterns and increasing efficiency in the kitchen. IT WAS “THE DECADE OF THE HOUSEWIFE”–a

time of prosperity and unprecedented innovations. The new “fitted” kitchen with its improved layout, new finishes and electronic appliances fueled dramatic changes in the American home. Refrigerators, mixers, coffee makers and other time-saving tools quickly became the standard. The 1950s transformed the kitchen from a necessary workspace to the shining domain of the modern housewife.
