Building an effective relationship with your mentor is important—a critical step in your journey together. Confidentiality is paramount. Be certain that your Mentor has your back. Let your Mentor know that you will reciprocate confidentiality toward them. Did they share something with you that you think will benefit another colleague? Super! But ask their permission to share it. Truth is a must. Be honest. Be clear about the goals you have for your career. Yes, you can complain to your Mentor—and you should — but set a goal. Identify the problem, name it, and ask for their help in discovering a potential solution that will help you establish and attain your career goals. Figure out a planned time to meet. Share contact information with each other. Be on time to meetings. Let your Mentor know if you will be late or if you need to reschedule. While you will benefit from consistent meeting times, build flexibility into your relationship because life happens.
