The Secret to a Great Career As a retired educator, I know what it means to be busy. Friends refer to me as the busiest person they know. Trying to explain my many post career jobs becomes complicated. So, I decided to tell them I actually work for many non-profits right now. Some are international like Alpha Delta Kappa, some are state groups like Arkansas Library Association and Arkansas Association of Instructional Media, and some are local like Garland County Retired Teachers and my church.

Updates from our AΔKCC Clubs Bella Watts Ball State University

The school year is officially in full swing, and so is the Ball State Alpha Delta Kappa Collegiate Club. We had a paired meeting at Cammack Station with Beta Episoln- and it was a blast! A picture of the AΔKCC members is featured below.

Last week we had a business meeting at Ball State's library.

One of the librarians spoke to us about all of the resources that are available for education majors. These are things such as creating maps, geography tools, creating online story maps, and much more! This October the Ball State Alpha Delta Kappa Collegiate Club is planning numerous fun and informational events! On October 12th we will be having a social Halloween painting meeting, and on October 17th will be attending the Founders Day Celebration. We are so excited for our upcoming meetings and to continue engaging with the education community!

In September, the Alpha Delta Kappa International Executive Board met in Kansas City for a Leadership Summit. Prior to the meeting we read the book, “When everyone leads the toughest challenges get seen and solved” by Ed O’Malley and Julia Fabris McBride of the Kansas Leadership Center. The book is based on the premise that leadership is not about a position, or authority. You don’t need a title to start leading.

We often wait around for those with a title (professor, principal, boss, etc.) to take the lead on moving the company or organization forward.

Leadership is about authorizing yourself to lead, starting where you have influence, owning your part of an issue, and engaging others to solve challenges. Leadership is an activity – small actions taken in moments of opportunity. Don’t wait for others to take the lead. As a student, you have the power to make a difference and lead in your community and on your campus. You don’t need a position or office to do so. As a classroom teacher, we have the power to lead within our school and to tackle challenges that need leadership. We do not need the title of grade level lead, department chair, or assistant principal. If we see challenges that need to be solved, someone has to start…someone has to take the lead…it may as well be you!
