Ineachstageofourlifewelookforwherewebelong.Asa youngkidwelikedplayingpeeweesoccerontheteamsthat ourfriendswereon.AsayounggirlwemayhavejoinedGirl Scoutsbecauseourneighborswerealreadyinvolved.Asahigh schoolstudentwemayhavefoundoursafespaceina classroomwhereateacherallowedustoeatlunchorhangout afterschool.IncollegeyougotinvolvedwiththeAlphaDelta KappaCollegiateClub(AΔKCC)becauseyoufoundother studentswhowerepassionateaboutpursuingacareerin education,otherswhowantedtomakeadifferenceinyour schoolcommunity,andpeoplewhowouldhelpyougrowasa leaderandaneducator.
Thesameistrueintherealworld.Wegravitatetowardsthe peoplethathaveoursamepassionsanddesiresforthecauses thatmeanalottous.Inaneducationalsetting,thatis
especiallyimportant.Asanewteacher,librarian,counselor,or otherroleineducation,itcanbeverylonely.Youhavea departmentorcolleaguesnextdoorthathelpyoulearn,support you,andarethereforyouasyougothroughyourfirstyear.But, whenthebellringsorwhenschoolstarts,youcloseyourdoorand itisuptoyou.Asateacherorlibrarianyouhave20-30students relyingonyoutoeducatethemandhelpthemnavigatelifein school.Asacounseloritisuptoyoutoguidestudentsand supportthemalongtheirpath.Thiscanbedauntingattimes,you canfeelinadequate,anditcanfeellonely.

Itisveryimportanttohavethoseeducatorsthatyoucanlean on,whoyoucanaskforadvice,whowillbetheretocheeryouon, andwhounderstandwhatyouaregoingthrough.Findatleast oneeducatorbestietohelpyouthrougheachdayandtheschool year.Ifyouarelucky,youwillfindseveralbestieswithwhomyou canbuildarelationshipwithandsupporteachother.
AnotherwaytofindthatsupportistojoinanAlphaDelta Kappachapterinyourarea.Chaptersarefullofcurrentand retirededucatorswho“getit”.Theyhavebeenorcurrentlyarea currenteducatorandsotheycanhelpyounavigatethewatersof beingayoungeducator.Theycanbetheretolisten,toshare ideas,andtosupportyou.Chaptersareoftenlookingforwaysto supportcurrenteducatorsandstudentsandsoyoucouldbenefit fromthis!Theycouldhelpyousetupyourclassroompriorto school,createactivitiesthatyouneedforyourclass,readtoyour students,andworkone-on-onewithstudents.Morethanthat, theycansupportyouwithnotes,emails,andwordsof encouragement.
Itmightfeellikegoingtoachaptermeetingisjustonemore thingwhenyouarealreadyexhaustedfromtrying
tonavigatethebeginningofyourcareer.When,infact,goingtoa chaptermeetingisawaytogetoutofyourbuilding,connectwith membersfromoutsideyourschool,maybehavedinner,andtobe withsisterswhounderstand.Inthe1980sapopularTVsitcomwas calledCheers.Itwasaboutalocalbarwherepeoplefromseveral differentwalksoflifefoundasafe,comfortablespacetograba drink.Thethemesongwaspopularforthesewords, Makingyourwayintheworldtoday
