How to Have a Dynamic Interview Debra Quinn Principal 20 years Admin Experience PreK - 12th Grade New Jersey Phi
Walking into your first interview can feel intimidating, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can also be one of the most powerful opportunities to showcase who you are as a teacher and a leader. Here are key techniques to help you make a lasting impression.
Know Your "Why" Before you walk into any interview, get crystal clear on why you chose education. Administrators are not just hiring someone to deliver content — they are hiring someone to inspire, advocate for, and connect with students every single day. Be ready to speak authentically about your passion for teaching and the kind of educator you aspire to be. Use the STAR Method When answering behavioral questions — and there will be many — structure your responses using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. This keeps your answers focused, specific, and compelling. Rather than speaking in generalities, bring your experiences to life with real examples that demonstrate your skills in action. Show Cultural Competence Today's classrooms are beautifully diverse, and administrators are actively looking for educators who embrace that diversity. Be prepared to speak confidently about how you differentiate instruction, build inclusive environments, and support students of all backgrounds and abilities. Ask Thoughtful Questions An interview is a two-way conversation. Come prepared with genuine, thoughtful questions about the school's culture, professional development opportunities, and instructional vision. This signals that you are serious, curious, and already thinking like a colleague rather than just a candidate. Be Yourself — Confidently Interviewees can spot rehearsed, robotic answers immediately. The most memorable candidates are those who are authentic, reflective, and enthusiastic. Let your personality come through. Smile. Make eye contact. Show them the educator that your future students are going to be lucky to have. Your first impression begins the moment you walk through the door — make it count.
